12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?

He allowed us to create our own ideas and challenge them. We developed several ideas and instead of lectures in the classroom we were encouraged to learn around the real world.

Creativity and the ability to do freely what we felt mattered to us as a group.

It was very open ended so it was up to us to come up with a project and ideas.

Group work and free thinking.

The group project itself was the most valuable aspect of the course because it gave us all the opportunity to work with other people and interact with them throughout the entire course.

Being able to craft our own project helping exposed my own strengths in the group.

Emphasis on the need to be able to apply one's self in a challenging and fulfilling way.

I liked how we were in control of the type of project we did. It allowed us to be creative and think outside the box.

i liked the freedom to actually complete a project on my own. I felt that by having freedom from a standard of rules it was easier to work and mold our project into something i really liked. I felt that having a solid deadline was important and that Duane Henry did a good job of coercing the class to complete their projects.

Being able to express ourselves through what we were interested in. We developed leadership and communication skills in this class that I feel we will not develop in any other.

The structure of this class was particularly engaging, we were allowed freedom to choose the direction of our projects.

The media project

Developing a project and research design were extremely valuable. Having to implement it ourselves and be creative helped to reinforce the learning outcomes and was a motivator to create a quality product.

13. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?

Class lacked any kind of structure and I felt some students used the freedom well others took advantage of it and did very little.

I wish things would have been a little more disciplined so I had an idea of what my goals were and what I needed to accomplish.

It was hard at times to get people to show up and participate. Maybe have more peer evaluations people seemed to try and participate more after we did them.

We should have started working on the project sooner.

I think that the class was a little too relaxed sometimes. I know it was experimental but i felt that some group members did not contribute equally as the class progressed. many of my group members showed great intent and great initial work effort but then dropped off and didn't show up for anything after the 8th week.

I felt that the first few weeks of class were sort of slow and I didn't feel that I benefited much from the class lectures just because there wasn't any class participation.

Class would have benefited from more structure and was not what I was expecting.

I have never took a class like this before and I really enjoyed it!

The course was fun and enticed everyone to get motivated and to work hard on their projects. It was so easy to talk to the professor and he made it completely interesting. He gave us complete control of the projects we made which allowed us to express our creativity.

Very cool course, unlike anything I've ever taken at UH. Duane Henry should be kept on so that students have opportunities like this again.

Great teacher with fresh ideas.

i thought this was a great course, taught by a great teacher. i really hope that he comes back to lecture again i will take more classes from him in the future even if they are not media or project based. best of luck to the professor and i hope he enjoys his summer!

I enjoyed the freedom we had in this class to perform to our best. The only suggestion I would make is to have a concrete date for a mid-update paper so you really know where we stand in completion of our projects. But other than that, the class was fantastic and would recommend you to teach it and others to take it.

I wish we could have talked a little more about the theory and how stories get picked for the news and what not

Duane is a great teacher. Course is different when compared to others. Allowed for creativity and proccessed thinking.

Great class in terms of freedom of creativity within a Political Science/Social Science course.

Take this class, it is a lot of fun, a lot of independent work. So bring your game face and be ready to work.

This was by far the most meaningful course I have taken at UH Manoa. Duane is talented, articulate, and has a passion for what he teaches. This is the second course I've taken from him, I strongly recommend this course and this professor.
