some of the scientific journals were interesting
I liked having group discussions because things were explained to me in another students words, which helped me better understand the articles and subjects.
Self-directed learning when it comes to studying for exams.
I liked the way Dr. Yang teaches us how to think. He breaks down the material, but in addition he has this way of teaching that what he teaches stays with you.
Dr. Yang is very knowledgeable in this area of study. He can answer any question and I can tell that he wants us to do our best for succeeding.
This is the first class that I have taken that uses research as the means of learning. I think that it made it more interesting seeing an actual example of how it was used instead of just memorizing it in a textbook. It lets you see what you have to look forward to after graduation.
I liked the fact that Dr. Yang posted everything online so that we could easily access them at any time. I also liked the small class size because it allows students to get to know each other personally and allows students to from a better one-on-one relationship with the instructor.
27. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
i didnt like that we pretty much just reviewed journal articles all semester.
I least liked the presentation because I don't like public speaking and we didn't have that much time to work on it.
The textbook wasn't very useful.
The quizzes were challenging because it wasn't clear what the quizzes would be on; either the reading material or the notes
Although Dr. Yang was knowledgeable, I felt that he did not teach enough. I feel that this class should have been labeled a seminar because we mostly discussed in his class. I feel that since it was more of a seminar style, I did not learn what I really wanted too. WE just read and discussed articles, however we should have learned about the techniques first, then read the articles that night and discuss them in class the next day. We did not learn about the techniques at all unless we looked them up ourselves. When we did that, it was confusing also.
I think that the textbook should not be listed as required as I bought mine and have never used it.
I felt that some of the content was a little too hard to understand, such as the articles assigned. I also did not like the way the syllabus was formatted. I would prefer the syllabus to have exact dates on them and I would prefer to follow the syllabus rather than have assignments thrown at us without knowing. But I do understand that he was just trying to change things around to help us to get a better understanding of the material since he saw that we were all sort of struggling with some of the concepts. I also did not like the fact that there was no actual assigned book. There was a recommended book, however, it was no help to the students that did have it. So, if he could find a book that explains his concepts better and giving students an over all understanding of the subject and the concepts that pertain to them, that would be great.
28. What changes would you make in the lectures?
more powerpoint and less articles and less writing on white board. sometimes hard to understand what he's saying and writing.
I think it may help to make a powerpoint or at least a slide that points out the main parts of an article we read and where to find it because sometimes I wasn't sure what you were talking about or where you found the information.
The visuals were sometimes hard to read, so I would use powerpoints that were easier to read.

I feel that this should be more of a seminar rather than a lecture. We mostly discussed, which was fine but at the same time, we didn't have prior knowledge to anything we discussed. We should have had lectures before the discussion if it were a lecture.
I would assign a book that would be helpful in understanding the concepts of the course. I would break down concepts even more, because genes and the concepts that pertain to it is a difficult subject to pick up in such a short amount of time, i think that It would be great for him to provide a study guide or a vocabulary list to study. Or for him to at least highlight important parts and write definitions on the board so we can better understand them instead of trying to write them down as he says them so quickly.
29. What changes would you make in the readings?
less journal articles and more informative readings on concepts and techniques.
It was kind of hard to grasp the concepts of some of the articles because they were so technical, especially when we had to read more than one.
Use a different textbook that more closely follows the lectures.

I struggled with understanding the readings. If possible, try to find readings that are more understandable for undergraduate students.
Briefly define and lecture about the readings before having us read and discuss about them.
I would assign easier to understand articles or at least break them down better in class. Sometimes we don't even discuss all of the articles that are posted online. If we are not required to read an article, it should not be posted online, because sometimes it confuses me as far as what needs to be read and so forth.
30. My overall evaluation of this course is...
it was a waste of time coming to class. lectures were boring and professor was hard to understand.
The class is interesting and I learned quite a bit, but sometimes the reading was confusing and it took extra time to figure out.
Enjoyable class, would recommend to other students.
Great professor! loved the way he teaches science, specially all the scientific papers we had to read.
This was a good course and I would recommend it to a friend.
Okay course. Needs improvement. I mostly learned when doing presentations or when we had to create one page summaries. Teacher should have a lecture (even a short one) about the techniques before testing us on them rather than make us read an article, discuss then test.
It is a difficult course to grasp because there is a lot of content, the readings take a lot of time to read and understand, the exams should include only the important and major concepts of the course and therefore only the important and major concepts of the course should be presented. However, class discussion of articles are very helpful in understanding them, the small class size makes it easier to focus and ask questions, and the topics that are discussed are very interesting and thought provoking.
31. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
more powerpoint presentation on concepts and techniques. If students dont understand how the concepts and techniques work, how are they supposed to apply it and understand it in a journal article?
Maybe if we went over the articles we read in a little more detail or you add them into your powerpoints to better clarify the objectives and take home message. I also think writing summaries for some articles is a good way for you to see what people understand and what you need to focus on.
Mini-projects were good (summary essays, speech), so we should have some at the beginning and middle of the semester too.

I thought that there could be more of the one page summaries vs. the quizzes. This would better show the student's understanding of the reading materials assigned.
Provide a book that is easy to understand breaking down the concepts taught in the class in the best way possible. Provide a study guide or return quizzes to students so that we can study them for the exam, the course needs to be taught as if the students have never heard any of it before (because we haven't) so new vocabulary words that are mentioned in the lecture should be written on the board, especially if they are important. Perhaps providing a list of vocabulary for each concept being taught would be helpful.
