Xerxes is a wonderful lecturer, we are lucky to have him.
Very good job. One of the best teachers i've had, made quantum seem easy. For me personally slightly less math and more discussion of experimental results would have been appreciated. I can always figure out the math on my own (given enough time that is) but it is sometimes hard to know what physical phenomena we are actually trying to describe without guidance. Once again the course was wonderful, and this should really probably not be taken so seriously because I know a lot of students enjoy seeing the math be done. Thank you very much, Jasper
Dr. Tata is a great lecturer which great knowledge of the course material. The added knowledge/examples he brought with his knowledge that were outside of the course text really helped in grasping the full context of the material. The only comment on the class, which I'm not sure can be avoided, is that the class is really fast paced. I don't mean difficulty, as I was able to grasp content at the rate he showed it. But just he presents the notes at a high rate. Since I'm consistently writing, sometimes I miss valuable comments that he makes in class. I'm not sure this is even avoidable as there is just a lot of material. Great class and great at explaining. Wish could take him for other classes.

I love the class. It's the best QM class I have ever taken! It will be perfect if we can have some kind of outline of all the things that will be covered in class.

Student presentations were an excellent way to get an experimental feel for the necessarily dense course material. We could put them together in a reasonable amount of time and we each seemed to get an especially good handle on our particular experiments. Liked the pace of the second semester, although maybe a bit more technical field theory prep first semester (even though it was stressed already) would allow us to do one or two additional SM calculations during semester two. Maybe replace one or two of the first semester Perkins-like problem sets with a simpler QED calculation. Again, technical proficiency was addressed throughout first semester at a reasonable level (the QFT diagnostic at the very start was a good way to set expectations for us and for the instructor), but just based on how people struggled to complete assignments second semester even more practice early on could be useful.

Dr. Tata is an excellent lecturer and this course was packed full of information. While very difficult and challenging, the notes for the class were like a goldmine of information. The assignments drew from the course material in an effective way. The only confusion I had in the class (besides the material itself) was which book to refer to when I wanted to clarify something in the lecture. Some of the notation used in the classes didn't appear to readily match the notation in the two main course books, and being unfamiliar with the field, I wasn't sure which book used the same notation. I do understand this is often an issue of specialized fields such as particles physics where the notation and text books might be less standardized. In all, I feel that the students in the physics department are very lucky to have Dr. Tata available to teach courses to us. I even nominated him for a UH Excellence in Teaching Award at the beginning of this semester when the UH solicitation for nominations went out. Looking forward to the second course in this series!

In my opinion, it would be useful to see more examples in the first semester (e.g. Stern-Gerlach experiment modifications) and how fundamentals of QM apply. Relating to the midterm at the first semester: it was long, it is better to make 1-2 days take-home midterms rather than 1 week. For the second semester, I would also prefer to see some atomic physics working applications (like we did for WKB method) along with relativistic QM (that most of the class agree to see). At the beginning of the semester it would be helpful to spend more time on the examples for Clebsch-Gordan coefficients (I still have some difficulties with CG's when there are calculations with them). Maybe, it would be good to see when QM scattering theory works well, and when it fails and spend more time on the examples to show that we need QFT or other theories. After all, I think the course is very-well and wise designed, Shankar's textbook is self-consistent and smooth to read and understand without constantly referring to other sources. I really like your lectures, lecture style and well-designed HW assignments that you made for us. Thank you very much!
The overall format of the course was fine. I would have liked to have seen more practical examples/experimental description for many of the problems we worked. The examples we did try were bang on what I wanted to see (stern gerlach, rutherford, etc.) No more overnight exams! The week long was good, I think the upcoming final is probably the most appropriate.
Everything was perfect! This only thing I want to say.. I wanted to study last all part of text books.. And I hope I want to learn QFT from you. Thanks for everything!!!!
The blue Sakurai was very helpful. It mostly helped me learn what I missed in the first semester. But it was also great for spin and clebsch-gordons. However, the text is ordered differently from Shankar. Identical particles has its own chapter near the end of the book. The tensors are introduced about 50 pages after the C-G's, so the full discussion of clebsch is separated. There are many more examples, which is a plus. But for derivations he refers too often to other authors. Shankar is too verbose. I don't understand him on first read throughs. But after reading class notes and reading Sakurai, I understand Shankar a lot more. From my perspective now, I like Shankar, but on first pass and especially for first semester I found him difficult to understand.

I enjoyed how many of the concepts presented were shown in a different light then I had previously seen, giving me another way to formulate, in my mind, how things work in the world of quantum mechanics. This allowed for new insights that I had not previously considered. One example was the use of compete sets in far more cleaver ways then I had imagined possible. I can't say there was anything that I particularly didn't like about the course. The material was presented well and given a strong backing from the knowledge of the professor. Thanks

Perkins is a nice book, and I'm glad that I own it, but I was a little disappointed with it at times. It's great for getting a conceptual understanding, and I really like the focus on experimental results and historical context. However, when it comes to making calculations, I found myself consulting other books--even for the problems out of Perkins. I guess this is a common complaint, and if I remember, you said as much on the first day of class. So I assume the benefits outweigh the negatives. Aitchison & Hey looks like a nice book, but I haven't gotten very familiar with it yet. I keep going to Peskin & Schroeder out of habit. In general, I loved this course. It's really bringing a lot into focus for me, and helping me get a start on my own thesis research. Thanks for a great semester!
I got bogged down with the math a bit. I think more short homework similar to the "Diracology" would have been helpful.
I feel that the content of this course was invaluable to my education and that it was presented at a level fit for me. I very much appreciate the no-nonsense logical steps in your lectures instead of the wishy-washy type reasonings I see in other places. I actually would have preferred that you teach the second course of this lecture for consistency and because your lectures are very easy to understand. I thought the Achison and Hey book was a good supplement to the Peskin QFT book we were using last semester b/c Peskin is nice and detailed but I lost the big picture of things often. I appreciate the many data inside Perkins but I found I was thrown around and confused many times trying to reconcile lecture content with the book. As a student touching some of these theories for the first time, this can be painful. Maybe it would be nice if you can say what part of your lecture is based on what section of which book before every lecture so that we won't be thrown around looking at conflicting content. But otherwise I enjoyed your class very much.
