8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Seeing many examples of art works by an artist we were learning about as well as preparing for the exams because it solidified my understanding of the artist and his or her works.
When Prof Stanton had extensively studied and written about artist, he not only gave us more information on that artist, but communicated his personal insights and passion about the work - you could see his face light up when he spoke of an artist he liked. I wish more professors still had the enthusiam about art history that he had, it makes art history much more exciting. This was very inspiring to me and helped me to learn more about the art and learn that I also could articulate my personal perspectives in regard to the artworks that I like in my essays. The professors feedback on writings were important to me as the was always encouraging and informative. The various authors he chose for the readings helped me see the different writing styles that art historian can have - some more interesting and humorous than others, some a bit dry. I could take what I wanted from each and also access the library if I chose. I enjoyed reading Prof Stantons essays as well.
Prof. Stanton's knowledge of the material and his passion over subject matter was the most valuable part of this course. When the teacher is actively involved and excited about their class, students can't help but feel the same way. The brief writings were very helpful to keeping me on task and keep my interest during the course.
i really enjoy the amount of research that Professor Stanton puts into his lectures which always contain information outside of the textbook. I learn so much more from listening to him lecture. Excellent class.
Joseph Stanton is a repository of both academic and anecdotal information on the art of the United States. His personal fascination with and immersion in the field of American History is a wonderful foundation for the curriculum of this specific course. He is able to supplement the lectures on American art with his additional knowledge of literature, history, politics, etc. I received a well- rounded educational experience and came away feeling like I had just completed two or three courses!
Getting knowledge about new material really helped me understand more about art history.
Seeing each painting that an artist did and relating it to their own style of painting to link them together.

19. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
I know it was a writing intensive course but it was very challenging to keep pace with everything that was due, especially as an art student taking several studio courses. Having exams along with papers due was difficult and would have been nice if the exams weren't two parts but simplified. Also, a good way I learn is from asking other students what they are thinking about a piece or discussing an art topic together, and I wish the atmosphere could have created a place that the students and instructor could have interacted with each other more.
I think his style covers all different kinds of learning; there is a very well researched lecture, slides, the text book, and he also sometimes provides supplemental materials in class (outside of the course packet).
Sometimes the slides were a bit uncooperative! Perhaps new slides?
no improvement need.
Maybe in a such a smaller class group discussion could be much more encouraged. It was more uncomfortable and awkward and "on-word" kind of questions and answers made up for "discussion".
20. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
He is an excellent instructor who knows his material and enjoys sharing it with others. However, his class is very challenging academically.
excellent professor, I enjoy his lectures. I am a repeat student for a reason.
i appreciated that he was always asking if we had questions and encouraged us to talk by asking questions to us. it helped us recall earlier works of art when he would ask what a certain painting was similar to. he is extremely knowledgeable about the course and has great enthusiasm for it. this is one of my favorite classes that i have ever taken and i would take another class from him again.
I absolutely loved this course and Prof. Stanton. I would recommend this class to everyone because you learn so much and the teacher keeps you interested throughout the semester. He really knows his material and he is passionate about it.
Very good teacher, makes the learning very enjoyable
Joseph Stanton is a great asset to this department and a wonderful advocate of (the sometimes unappreciated) art of America. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and Professor Stanton's lecturing style and deliberation of material.
He has great knowledge about the content and he shares his experiences also.
The course was so interesting and it would have been fun and more interesting to share some of our thoughts and opinions in the work. Better discussions could even further our brief response writings
He is a very educated teacher who made learning about art very easy to understand.

25. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I liked having a lot brief writings instead of a couple big papers
Listening to the lectures, especially when the instructor could really share about an artist's life and not just their works.
I enjoy seeing the extra images of the artworks, I like the lectures.
i felt like he wasnt just showing slides and making us memorize the name and the artist but he would also give us information about it. that way i would not only know the title of the work of art but i would also know history about it. some teachers dont do that.
I really enjoyed the set up of the class and the teacher. The teacher was always interesting and interested in the subjects. It is a writing intensive course, but the brief writing assignments definitely broke down the writing into chunks that were easy to handle. I liked the broadness the assignments -we got to choose what we were to write about rather than be told to write about something. This style of teaching is engaging for the student - I learned so much because I was interested in it.
I enjoyed the intimate knowledge I gained of American artists that I would not have received from simply reading a textbook. I have a better understanding of said artists because of the well- rounded presentation of their personal lives, beliefs, likes and dislikes, and role in American society.
I liked the freedom we had in our writings. For a writing intensive class it was nice and helpful to just respond to pieces and analyze them critically on our own.
26. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The load of having to write so much not because of the quantity but because of the timing, for it seemed like something was always having to be turned in whether it was brief writings, exams, studying for an exam, or the final paper, and it was challenging to balance it all with studio art classes.
i cant think of any
The part where it ended.
The 7:30 am final exam
27. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Intense but very educational.
excellent
this is definitely worth taking. at first i thought this would be really boring and i was just taking it because it was a writing intensive but it ended up being one of my favorites. his teaching style is very organized and easy to follow.
This was an excellent course. I learned a lot and enjoyed coming to class!

6. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Professors willingness to share his very knowledgeable and passion for his expertise in the artistic time.
The instructor
The readings were valuable. Well chosen texts.
I liked the Stangos book.
I loved hearing about the history of the artist. Knowing information about the artist's life really helped me understand the art pieces more.
I think the most valuable aspect of the course would probably be the lecture.
Sleeping.
Lectures and listening to other students talk about the different isms.
The slides that you show are great. I feel like I am a walking through a museum with a very knowledgeable guide. Thank you.

Tests are too difficult.
I have no suggestions at this time. Thanks.
I feel the take-come essays are too much on top of the studying for the exams. Perhaps if we could choose only two essay questions instead of four. To have to do both, the essay and the studying for the exam so close together is kind of stressful.
I did not like the formatting of the exams. Although it is good to be able to write a paragraph about a piece or artist, but as it is an art course, I think using slides doing the exam (as reference) would make things a bit easier for the students.
More elaborate hints/advices for what will be covered in the test during the lecture would help in studying the tests. Since the study sheet contained many terms and it was hard to figure out the 'detail' you wanted in the answers.
The in class test is unreasonable. There is simply too much material expected to be learned. If, for the test, there were slides to accompany the questions, it would make more sense. I have never been in an art history class where we were not expected to identify the actual work of art.
The instructor clearly has a vast understanding of the subject matter. However, the way he taught this class is similar the style of the survey classes. I would have liked to look more in depth at fewer works and to really analyze important breakthroughs in art history. Instead, we covered a large amount of artists and movements. I also wish that the class had been more engaging. While the instructor asked whether there were any comments after each artist was considered, we weren't really given a forum to think about and discuss the works and how they affect us, as young, contemporary artists. While I felt that the grading system was fair, our class grade was based entirely on the midterm and the final and so it was hard to know where we stood in the class until well after the period to withdraw. I really appreciate Stanton's hard work and love of the subject matter. These are suggestions to more the class more interesting.
The study sheet is quite extensive. Even with notes in class it's a bit much. Either hand out the study sheet in the beginning of the series of lectures or reduce it a little.
