15. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I would have enjoyed a few face to face meetings, although I know that many of the students in the course were too far away for this to take place.

some study guide questions would have been clearer for me to understand and interpret had they been worded without inferences. Or maybe it's me. I have a much harder time interpreting inferential questions.
The course was excellent, I cannot think of any area that needs improvement.

Dr. Smith presented the material in a lively and engaging way. I get his passion for the subject and feel that he is really trying to impart this knowledge to us in a way that we can go out and use it to make a difference for students in transition. He clearly presented his viewpoint from the perspective of the laws and gave concrete methods and tools to use to implement these mandates.
I would like to have some websites of Hawaii showing samples of assessments that we use here in Hawaii.
Excellent teacher.
Thank you. I didn't know anything about transition before taking this course, and now I would happily accept a job position as a transition specialist!
good job!!

15. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I really enjoyed this class because Dr. Smith was very informative and enthusiastic with teaching this course (he has extensive background in transition services for students with disabilities). I wish there were more students in this class to further discuss their experiences, etc. in the classroom because Dr. Smith has a lot of advice and a lot to offer for upcoming teachers. However, Dr. Smith was super nice and was VERY accommodating to his students in this class and I gained a lot of knowledge from his teaching.
He can improve the teaching of this course by letting us participate a bit more in class. When going things, like the test, it's more of a lecture format still. We have discussions in class, but when going over the tests' answers or study guide, I like showing off that I know my content. I don't get to talk as much in this class.
I think he did a good job. I would have liked to have learned more assessments used to help with transitioning
I enjoyed watched "Graduating Peter". I would like to see more videos, documentaries, real-life scenarios, etc.
Garnett Smith did an amazing job. He is one of the few professors that made class enjoyable, educational and relevant. I am so glad I ended this program with him as my final professor.
Much of the discussion was student led but I think a big portion of why it was so valuable was because of discussions. Including discussions into the overall plan as opposed to them being spontaneous would add another layer to a great class. Try to challenge our thinking by posing questions and having us discuss them.
Involve students! Powerpoints and lectures do not feel adquet for graduate study.
Perhaps offering Laulima sessions but the option of live attendance for the Manoa campus. A Laulima session could be conducted while he is teaching the class live, so that for those who have trouble getting to campus, they can still benefit from real-time input.
Multiple choice tests are very low rigor. It did not require having attended or really learned the material in order to pass them.
I felt that this course was similar to what I learned in undergraduate studies at another university.
I feel if Mr. Garnett Smith gets more comfortable with the technology (online, computer videos)the students will be able to connect to his lessons a bit more. He's got so much knowlegde the technology would be a great additive to his smarts.
While Prof. smith was certainly enthusiastic and knowledgable about the course material. Navigating the site page was a bit confusing. It was sometimes hard to find new info and I had to open several links to find out what was new. Maybe a better way would be to separate subject matter into 4 sections based upon what was covered by the tests. Then we would know where the subject matter would be found based upon what test section we were currently in.
I enjoyed Dr. Smith's teaching style and would recommend this instructor to other students. Dr. Smith is a fair instructor that helps you to understand the terminology by being very informative.
There needs to be more accountability for students. The tests were not difficult if you completed the study guide. More ways to challenge students.
Utilize the computer format for more student interaction on-line.
More class interaction and participation
I would suggest that he make the elluminate sessions mandatory, so that more lively discussions could take place, and the students would be held accountable.
more discussion/interaction in laulima sessions / fewer Laulima sessions (though since they were not a graded requirement the regularity was okay.
I thought he was a wonderful teacher.
I really enjoyed how this class was taught. He allowed us to be independent in our learning which I really respected, but at the same time, I perhaps didn't work as hard as I normally would.
Great class!
I was a little confused at time on the resource set up.
It was great
It was an excellent course and I cannot think of anything that needs to be changed.
maybe expand test formats or try introduce a project

I found his use of Laulima very confusing. I had a difficult time keeping track of articles and I felt that there was not alot of consistency where they were posted on Laulima.
16. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Dr. Smith was always available for discussion and/or questions for this course. Although there were not many students in class, it was nice to be able to have in-depth conversations during class sessions about transitioning for students. As a high school special educator, I look forward to using the knowledge I gained in this class in the real world high school environment.
Dr. Garnett Smith's power point presentations made the material easier to understand. I also appreciated that he posted narrated power points so we could refer back to them when needed. The material was up to date and very useful.
I love that Dr. Smith is committed to making sure we have everything we need to know about transitioning special education students to the real world. He is an expert in this field and it shows. He is very accommodating for those who cannot physically attend our on-campus class and is always willing to help us w/ course content or career advice when we ask for it. He is my favorite professor of the department.
He was very knowledge on the subject
Approachability, reasonableness, fairness, knowledge of content.
The circle lesson, the comparison of IDEA and NCLB, and the final 5 mins summarization.
He had strong knowledge of and experience the content.
He has had a lot of expereince and is a knowledgable guy about transition.
Very flexible and understanding. Offers different points of view on topics related to transition, so students can gain a better understanding of all sides.
the course was easy
He's been teaching for so long, just lecturing with him, the class gets to gain great experience. He's seen so much and taught in so many situations that his knowledge is invaluable.
I really enjoyed Prof.Smith. His love of the subject knowledge shown through. He was very passionate about transition and this helps students to get excited about the course.
He is very knowledgeable and informative with an excellent presence.
In his power point presentations and eluminate sessions, you can tell that Garnett is very knowledgeable and very passionate about this topic. HIS class has taught me alot about transitioning, he doesn't know how much HELP he has given me with my plan B paper and transitioning my students to be successful.
I loved the open discussion and Smith's willingness to challenge the structure and system. Fun!
the reading material. Very informative.
He prepared us well for the exams
He is very knowledgeable and flexible in teaching, which was appreciated. I liked the narrated powerpoints.
He is very knowledgeable about the issues regarding transition. He also provides some ideas and advice to approaching these issues.
I always knew what material I was being assessed on; if it was on the test it would also be on the study guide. Narrated power points were an interesting addition to the repertoire. Appreciated his enthusiasm for locating up to date information and web resources on the topic.
I really appreciated that he uploaded all the information early so that I could print a copy, I also appreciated that I could look at the recorded elluminate sessions and recorded ppt on my own time.
I really respected the structure of the class. I also appreciated our face to face class.
Applicable knowledge of transition considerations.
The numerous recourses that will help me in the future.
Communicated effectively over Laulima
I like the way that the students could be online during class to participate in the discussions. Yet if you could not attend the session was recorded for viewing later.
His open-mindedness and his ability to help us apply concepts to real world experiences!
Professor Garnett Smith was extremely passionate about this topic and this really helped to understand the importance of transitioning and many of the issues that may arise. It is great to see a professor who is willing to share not just the information we needed to learn but also connect it in a meaningful way.
he has great articles and online resources
very passionate
He was very enthusiastic about the topic and included relevant but not required information for us.

Going to class and gaining knowledge through interacting with peers and Dr. Smith.
I liked the presentations and lectures. Dr. Garnett Smith is a great speaker and made the course material interesting.

Prof. Smith is a very likable professor. He has a fresh passion for his subject matter and this was infectious. I enjoyed the course.
I appreciated the presence of Garnett Smith and I would love to sit down and chat with him personally with his experience and knowledge in the field of SPED. I felt comfortable and had a minimum amount of stress throughout the course. I want to commend Dr. Smith for providing a structured and comfortable environment.

Garnett Smith is not only passionate about transition issues but has real experience in the field which adds to the richness of his presentations.
organization of documents and resources became confusing as the class went on. Could use modules?

15. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I think that the instructor could make his lectures more engaging and interesting for the students through hands-on, cooperative learning activities. For example, small group and whole class discussions could help students make connections between behavior management concepts and personal experiences in their field placements. For the behavior change project, the instructor could have the students begin collecting and recording baseline earlier in the semester. This could help prevent students from procrastinating and waiting until the end of the semester to implement an intervention plan. I liked that the instructor provided feedback for students when we turned in the first two steps of the behavior change project. It was helpful for me to see if I had chosen an appropriate target behavior to change. Again, if this could be done earlier in the semester (maybe during the middle of the semester or earlier) then the students could begin implementing their interventions sooner and be able to collect more intervention data.
Instructor can incorporate group work or discussions with the class during the semester
maybe group interaction would help, and application of concepts through discussions or scenarios etc.
more hands on activities. more projects?
I think the instructor could improve the teaching of this course by having other ways of teaching instead of only powerpoints. In-class activities could help make it more engaging.
Allowing more time for the behavior change project and giving constant feedback on it to make sure we are following the guidelines correctly and that we are making forward progress.
I think the instructor does a great job teaching this course as it is. i would not change anything about this course.
nothing :)
more hands on activities might have been beneficial to this course
16. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
The main concept is strongly backed with examples that are easy to understand.
I liked that the instructor shared many stories with us about his experiences with classroom management techniques. This helped me to learn more about classroom management and how it could be used in the classroom.
He knew his content very well and gave real life examples that helped a lot.
He helped me grasp the main concepts of behavioral management through the exam questions....very relevant to reality; no trick/overly detailed questions or information. that was very helpful
instructor demonstrated a lot of teaching techniques in class by running class in the form of examples (if that makes sense)
very knowledgable
Dr. Smith is an extremely kind man and he's just a genuinely nice person which makes him easily approachable when you need help. He's also very knowledgeable about behavior management.
He was approachable and very knowledgable. I wanted to come to class, he made the material understandable to me for the most part.
The instructor has a great sense of humor and is all about the students. Great Guy.
he relates the material to his personal experieces
i liked that if you had any questions or needed to talk to him, he was always in his office during his office hours and when you could not make it to them, he could set up a time to meet with you. i like the end of the semester project because it gave an insight of things you could do to help students in your class. he gave a lot of good information about the topic and definately things that i could use in the future. i like the breaks, it helps me refocus on what the instructor is saying.
his life applicable stories and information on the type of reinforcements one can use in modifying a student's behavior

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
all of them
I liked that the instructor posted his lecture powerpoints on Laulima. I was able to print out the slides before class to take notes on, which I used to review for the exams. I also liked when I earned positive reinforcers on my exams... frog dollars and all! :) I also liked the different formats for taking the exams in this course. Talking with peers about exam questions and watching a video about PUBS were really helpful for me to gain a better understanding about classroom management concepts and strategies.
The behavior project was very interesting and fun to do. I learned a lot.
group exams 8) and information relevant to reality
I liked Dr. Smith the best! He's so nice.
Allowing for group work and collaboration for solving problems. It allowed us to get other views and if we missed understood something we could get the correct meaning from our peers.
I liked the power points and other multimedia materials.
project and his stories
i liked how he tested in different ways: test in which you could communicate with others and a take home test. i like the final project and it used all the information that was taught thoughout the semester.
I liked how the tests were administered and how the slides were easy to attain through laulima
24. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
none, really
I did not like the location of our class because it did not accommodate the large class size and the learning environment was not comfortable (too cold most of the time). Also, the behavior change project was time-consuming and challenging because students are in their field placements two times a week. If the instructor could provide more feedback and support for students throughout the progress, then the project could be more worthwhile and meaningful for students.
Having a two and a half hour class in a freezing classroom and having a small classroom that couldn't fit all students.
the textbook readings were very detailed
Certain student behaviors (talking to others while instructor was talking, eating meals during class, searching various internet websites while instructor was talking) was very distracting
I disliked the length of the class, i felt it was really long.
That it took a while to get back the results on the first part of our behavior change project. It would have been nice to get it sooner and see if we were doing the work correctly.
Everything about the course was enjoyable.
none
i know that this will not change but having the class one day a week cramed a lot of information into 2 1/2 hrs. it was an overload most of the days.
none
