12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Her being really nice... very knowledgeable about her subject area...
It helps us understand the necessary steps in order to do a thesis project.
Everything. Most exercises helped me think about my dissertation in a different way.
Lectures and Powerpoints
The most valuable aspect of this course was to have a thorough knowledge and understanding of how to prepare for the following semesters and my D. Arch project.
Outlining the process for doctoral research.
The philosophical and intellectual exercises that blew my mind!!!
it cover everything we need to know about the doc one
Learning the techniques used for professional reasearrch.
Reading and keeping up with the assignments.
The individual meeting times.
The 7 research processes.
The exercises and assignments were considered overall valuable. I enjoyed how most of the instruction were broken down so that they understandable and relatively simply to follow.
Very organized, very clear, all around beneficial to me.
The exercises helped me to narrow down and refine my topic.
Learning the different research methods that we will be using for doing our own project.
There was a clear guide line to the course that well prepares you to start your doctorate
The exercise was very helpful throughout the semester
13. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
none
A lot seemed not so much valuable, but that's because it did not pertain to my thesis.
Some of the exercises did not help or have anything to do with my specific dissertation.
The least valuable aspect was the time of the class, the class needs to be earlier in the day.
Definitions of definitions. Word mumble jumble, looses content. And seriousness of topic is diluted with comics and silly quotes telling us to reward ourselves with cupcakes and vacations, etc.
Not knowing what the hell was going on because the content was so confusing.

The assignments could have been more thorough. I am still uncertain of how I may have done some of them wrong or even what I may have done right. All I know is that I have is a low unexplained grade, nothing further.
Some of the exercises seemed a bit superfluous but I'm sure that my opinion is probably directly influenced by how much work I had for other classes.
Some of the exercises were kind of busy work I felt. I don't remember which ones off the top of my head.

28. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Knowledable about subject.
She is very helpful in assisting me to think outside of the box regarding my dissertation.
Helpful in working through ideas for thesis.
Magi is a helpful resource to talk to about determining where to proceed in the D. Arch project.
She is always so positive, smiling, great attitude. Magi is a delight. Her assignments and exercises are clearly written and easy to follow. Also her organization on laulima is helpful in the success of this class.
She blew my mind with that crazy ass shit! I don't know what I will use but I know it will come into handy when I do my Doc# 1 & 2. Loved it. It reminded my of a philosophy class I took and I feel more enlightened now.
she is available to meet and discuss any questions
She did a seven year thesis.
Very helpful personality and a willingness to help you succeed.
She is very enthusiastic and well humored about the work she is teaching, it makes it much easier to pay attention and get involved in the class personally. Also her knowledge of the class subject.
listening to our needs.
discussing together what other opportunities may help further develop the thesis topic.
Very clear, very organized, certainly qualified to teach this course.
I appreciate her real world knowledge and application of the subject matter.
She's one of the most pleasant people to talk to on campus and always is willing to help give feed back for my project. She tries hard to make time for students even if she's busy. I like how she gets really into our projects too because then her feed back is even more valuable.
very eager and excited to teach
I was able to think and came out with my thesis. I also think about my chair.
29. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
nothing.

Presentations are designed and presented to us in an elementary way. ie: reading of slides for an 1hour 15min lecture should be prohibited to doctrine students. But based on some of the questions posed in class, apparently other colleagues need it this way.
not knowing what the information meant in relation to my thesis. But its all confusing; that's life.

I could never tell if her questions were rhetorical or not...so I answered them regardless. HA!

30. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
More interactive exercises.
It would be better if I knew what I was doing the whole time but, was helpful in determining what I am going to be doing so...

The work of this class does not need a professor to teach to us, we are able to seek out the answers and follow formats. This class seems to be a "CYA" for the school. It kills me students have no idea what they want to study when they are enrolled in d_arch program.
Nothing. I think she has got a handle on it.
I think it would be helpful to give examples and routes to funding research.
n/a
More individual meetings to help students find their research topic. It is a difficult task and involves a lot of self-searching. Students don't get many other opportunities to do brainstorming about what they find interesting.
Can't say more. She has it dowm packed
Have another TA who is not someone who has just finished completing the course. Not every comment made sense or seemed helpful.
Maybe take out some of the busy work exercises?
I think that for this class there were way to many exercises, and I dont think that all of them were completely necessary. Often it felt like "busy work" and I would reccomend reducing the exercises by at least half.

36. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Great way to start a thesis.
I think this course was not necessary at a graduate level. If you do not know the information covered in the course by the time you have reached the graduate level, you should not be in this program. It is requirements like these that are lowering the value of the D. Arch degree.
Informative!
It would be better if I knew what I was doing the whole time but, was helpful in determining what I am going to be doing so...
Perfect to have before proceeding into 2nd year of grad school.
Effective.
Great but I wish a-little more understanding as to what it all meant in the holistic context, more visual examples as to what some of things she was talking about was and or outlining could have helped.
Helpful in helping us figure out what we want to do for the D.arch project
Very Good and helpful to approaching the thesis.
a good class but takes sufficient of work, time, and effort to get through.
Excellent
great and fairly reasonable overall.
Great, vital in this D.Arch. process.
It is an excellent course for anyone who is going to be doing research. All of the knowledge, while not the most exciting topic, is very useful.
Very interesting. I never knew of all these research methods before and it's good to know because soon, we will have to do our own research for our thesis projects.
Very good- but too much "busy work"
I like this course. It helps me for my thesis. T.A was very helpful too to have.
37. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I think the environment of the classroom needs work, that or the time needs to change. Many of us are tired, and the 5+ hour break in between classes proved to be invaluable to many of us.
The credits and class time should have be used as a "free period" in which students used the time to do research and gain better in depth knowledge of their D. Arch topic.
Summaries of the lectures (key points) and more specificity in the exercises.
Less assignments, more quizzes.
This course could really use more outside time to meet with possible grad chairs prior to the final D. Arch Proposal.
handouts and or exercises given in class.
Maybe the class lectures can be a little more engaging. I found myself sleeping a lot (sorry!)
Thee course could have more examples of how the research develops out into the professional field. It would be interesting to see how an architecture firm conducts their research. It would also help to see how much the market demands research in the field and if grants are an option - how do we get one.

More time with Magi!!
A TA who knows exactly what they are doing and not just guessing here and there.
Just take out some of the busy work and focus more on the assignments.
I would offer this course much closer to when we would actually start our doctorate- I think one semester before would be much more helpful- more relevant- and would remain more fresh in our minds for the following semester. One year in advance is way too soon.
38. Other comments:
Thank you!

She's awesome sauce!!!

I think the presentations of d.arch proposals were too short. I sat through the majority of them and I felt that most of time students spent 2 minutes rushing to explain their project, then the next 5 minutes of the critique portion answering questions to clarify the project, then only it left 2 minutes of actual feedback. It would have been better spent presenting for 5 minutes and then getting 5 minutes of VALUABLE feedback. For the most part the only ones that received ample feedback were the ones that didn't have much of project to present. So there wasn't much to explain and plenty to comment on.
Thank you for all your help!

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The exercises and assignments were really valuable in the process of determining a project topic. The workload really forces you to focus your interests, which is really necessary in the process.
doing the presentation towards the end that helped to prep us for our first commitee review.
the details of the research methods
The preparation management for writing our disertation
Do the exercises and assignments. They were difficult, but they really made you think about your topic.
Imparted knowledge to help me drill down my doctorate project subject.
Useful to learn the different research methods/techniques. Exercises were helpful in understanding each method. Guest speakers were informative.
getting my d arch proposal going. learning about different methods of conducting research. Maggie is excited about the subject she is teaching and very knowledgable about it.
Helped me narrow down my project proposal. Framed my research design.
one of the most valuable courses ive taken so far in architecture school

Some of the exercises were a bit strange (like the gamma map), but it was something different. Not sure how much it applies to research.

Amy Anderson had a class before ours and she always ran about 10 minutes into our class time. we were always waiting outside for her class to finish up. Even when we came into class to sit down and maggie came in to get ready Amy ignored us. Then maggie would go at least 15 minutes over time for our class. This was really annoying as i have a class that takes place right after this one. This was not an occasional problem it was a chronic problem that happened almost every class. Maggie is an excellent teacher, but she needs to stop talking when her time is up! Amy needs to respect the class time limits as well.

23. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Maybe have guest speakers come in or previous doctorate graduates and share with us about their process and how it was for the.
need more relevant examples for the different research methods
Engage more with students in participating in discussion, hence it is a seminar so be more effective in conducting it as a seminar class
And more images to the powerpoints and have more guest speakers. I found that the guest speaker were very knowledgable and helpfuul. Maybe some group discussion because I was able to get a lot of good ideas and thoughts from what they thought about my topic.
Instructor could spend more time discussing each individual's topic (more feedback)
everything is fine, just finish on time!
This class could be a once a week class. Need more time per class meeting to describe certain aspects. We seemed to have went passed our time alotment more often then none.

Scale back the powerpoints to be a summation, too much text, enough to review the book and add new points
get rid of the textbook, absolutely useless
Amy and Maggie need to learn how to stop at the end of their class time.
