10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I really enjoyed learning about legislator process and going to testify.
The most valuable was all of it! But what I really liked and learned a lot about was testifying at the legislature and following my bill. This process was an integral part of on hands learning for me. I also liked checking out the town hall meetings.
learning policies. Do your work on time.
Bill tracking and testimony was super good skills to learn
being more involved in leaning about policy, going to the capital and familiarize myself what the capital offers. meeting our representatives. this encourages us to be active and know where to go for advocacy.
Not exactly the most interesting content, but necessary. Learned a lot about policy and the way systems function.
Putting myself outside of the box and thinking about policy. Going down to the legislature was quite and experience. What was most valuable was learning about policy and how it is very important to social work.
Open discussions
The subject matter and real world application was/is extremely valuable. I now feel empowered that I have at leas a decent understanding of the legislative process and my influence as a community member. Katherine did a wonderful job of walking us through the process and subsiding our fears in what can be a very intimidating process. Katherine spent as much time as we need to understand and feel comfortable with the process. I intend to make good use of what I have learned and make as much noise as I possibly can in the legislative process (in a good way or course).
The field trips
Being able to go to the state capitol and the assignment on the policy brief. The ability to discuss things in class is always awesome.
Great communicator, very fair, fun class, learned a lot, great activities.
I appreciated the time and effort that was put into the class lectures and presentations. The instructor is knowledgeable and passionate in the class that was being taught.
Most valuable aspect was testifying!
she took a course and helped us by giving more focused work, she also challenged us with testifying and in-person interviews. she allowed ample amount of time for work to get done and made the material very interesting even with such a large class.
I thought that learning about the policy process was so valuable not just for social workers but for everyone. I hope to continue to learn more about the policy process because it's such a big part of the change process.

18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
I enjoyed learning about the legislative system.
She is a super fair instructor, that keeps her word. She is consistent with what she says and does, which is important to me. She explains things thoroughly and I feel we can ask questions openly without being judged. She has been my favorite instructor!!
She is great. her door is always open, and easily can be reached.
Katie was always full of positive energy. There was not a day when she was ever sluggish or seemed like she did not want to be in class. I also appreciate her knowledge in public policy. She opened my eyes to how the different government agencies and policies are owned and operated. Before I took the class, it was not a topic of interest for me unless it benefitted me in any way. Overall I am glad I took this class because what kind of Social Worker would I be if I did not know what type of agencies are out there?
Her in depth knowledge and understanding of policy issues
very informative, and allows class to expand their thoughts and perspective
She really knows what she's talking about. Katie is able to make a boring subject a little more interesting and funny at times.
She's very fast paced, and you can see it's because she's really passionate about her subject.
She knows a lot about policy and seemed to always know the answers to most questions.
Helpful.
Katherine gives you all the time that you need to understand and clarify complex ideas. She make you feel like you matter.
Her enthusiasm
Her willingness to work with us as students.
She answered every question so the entire class could understand. She made learning fun.
Our instructors attitude and willingness to challenge the class in digging deeper was an invaluable attribute to this course.
Always answered questions in a timely manner
her love for the subject especially everything about the legislation. you can see her passion for teaching and her course and always tries to make it fun
She knows what she's talking about. I just need to become more accustomed to 'policy vocabulary'

25. Other comments:
The teacher did not tea H during this class. We went over the syllabus NUMEROUS times in detail. We spend a lot of the class time doing this. It felt as though this was being done to take up time. It was a waste of time. Instead of teaching class herself she made the students do it. The s tune the presentations were brutally boring, no one paid attention to the presentations. This was a very disappointing class. The good part of it was learning about bills, this was self taught.
I feel Katy plays an important role in the social work program. She has really had an impact on my learning/educational experience. I look to her as a role model and feel very privileged that I was able to have her as my instructor. I wish she taught for seniors!
I think we could have maximized the class even more. What I mean by that.. A good chunk of class was Q&A's, whose answers could easily be found on the syllabus or emailed. Sometimes I sat in class thinking what was I doing there. I could be doing something useful right now rather than listening to repetitive questions. I think it's great that you answered them though, I think some appreciated that. But I think I just think it was quite extensive. At some points we wouldn't actually start class until an hour after 130pm. I also think it would have been helpful to do the policy analysis in the beginning of the semester. That way we're set up for the other assignments like oral testimony and community meeting. I also thought that having a lot of the assignments due in the end of the semester was a curse. I mean, appreciated the time but it also back fired... As I mentioned earlier, I think it would be beneficial to structure the semester like a journey -- first getting to know what social policies you care about, then doing an analysis about it, going to a meeting about it, then testifying for it, etc. rather than having everything due in the end. I was also disappointed that we didnt do a group assessment this semester. I don't think I should have been deducted points for my group's lack of practice and effort in the project. I know I did my best.. Last but not least, I think class content doesn't need to be taught through group presentations. I don't think we get as much knowledge through it. I wanna graduate from college knowing I learned everything I needed. I think as an instructor you have so much control in that and how you choose to do that. True we can do readings on our own as well but what are we in class for then? Hope you don't find these comments harsh.. Have a great summer and thank you for everything! :)
Should probably limit or change the group presentations. They were too long and it was hard to pay attention because there was so much information coming from a big group. Also every group had a different way of presenting which can be a little problematic.
I highly recommend Katherine Bennett and would not hesitate to take her again in possible future classes.
Great class
Awesome Professor.

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I enjoyed the variety of teaching methods such as guest speakers, group activities, projects, etc.
Going into this course I was interested in majoring in Social Work and after taking this course I am planning on apply for the school of social work. It made me a lot more confident and motivated in what I want to study. I really enjoyed the topics discussed in this class and look forward to taking more SW courses.
The shared experiences of Katie and guest speakers she brought in. group work
Very informative about basics of social work field and demands of a social worker.
I learned a lot of history and different perspectives about social work.
I liked learning about the aspects of social work and what it takes to be successful in the field.
she taught well
This class made me want to become a better person. Looked up to so many wonderful people in this course
The most valuable part was the group discussions because it helped me to gain insight on what other people thought about the issues we face today. In order to fix these issues, we need to know which issues to address first
Professor Bennett presented a quick view of what is to be expected in the School of Social Work. The most valuable would be her implementing guest speakers into class. These types of informational speakers allows for not only knowledge of different programs and resources available, but I am able to connect to the professionals who are taking part in making change.
Everything was valuable.

18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Overall, she was an excellent teacher, very knowledgeable, experienced, and passionate.
She was very enthusiastic and displayed both knowledge and a passion for the subject. Was very helpful with any questions I had pertaining to social work as well.
She knows a lot about social work and everything she has to say is very interesting. Her lectures kept me focused the whole time and wanting to stay involved in the discussion. I also could ask her any questions I had for applying to the school of SW which was really helpful and encouraging.
Great professor! Katherine made the course fun and interesting, while keeping us on track. I really enjoyed being in this class and I really did learn a lot of interesting and useful things.
Her energy and enthusiasm are outstanding. Her previous experience and background were valuable, too
Shes was available for office hours and consultation and explained assignments well.
She was always very easy to communicate with.
She constantly made sure we understood the content and gave us chances to ask questions for clarification
She is helpful, very knowledgeable and can def go to when in need of help
presented the content it in a very practical way for us
Professor Bennett had a a way of keeping me interested and involved in all lectures. She articulates clearly what is to be expected and she makes it clear that she is available if needed.
She explains things good. I like that she put us in groups to start us on learning to facilitate and group and learn to work with other, for that is some of what social workers do an is good practice for us undergrads now.

Great course, out of all my classes this semester this one I am the happiest about and really glad that I took this course because now I have an idea of what I want to do in my future.
Often referencing things that only people that have lived here would know about. For example the social work agencies present on the island, schools, bills passed in Hawaii, things pertaining to locals

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
the history of social welfare and how it connects to the present issues today. we were able to choose group projects of our interests and develop different ways of thinkings and interventions. we also got to go to iolani palace which i would have normally never gone if i had not taken this course.
The indiv & group presentations throughout the course. Receiving the students perspective from research of our history and culture
Learning about the history, although very dense was really important.
Although I did not enjoy the reading sheets, I did learn a lot from the questions.
Loved discussing current events and how they related historically and within social work. Knowing the historical back ground to issues is vital to seeing how changes have progressed and what things can be done and what societal impacts they have.
Group presentations
Knowing about the history of social work in the many aspects brought to light what has been done to better the needs of those who are oppressed or marginalized in one way or another and at the same time lets us know what areas we still have to work on.
The last group project.
student interaction. open conversations. group projects
The reading sheet assignments were a huge benefit for me because it forced me to read the text and additional articles on a more critical level.
I hated the reading sheets but I'm glad it was forced because I gained a lot of knowledge from that as well as the in class lectures.
Structured.
The aspects of the course that were most valuable would have to be our group discussions. When we come together, everyone is one. With the help with Katie gives the class just runs throughly.
The best aspects of this course was the current events. Everyone's insights have helped me to develop my own thoughts on the subjects we discussed in class. I think using current events is a good way to make a history class interesting, and it also makes the material feel relevant to learn because it connects with our present.

18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
her enthusiasm for the history of social welfare. she is excitable when she talks about history which i feel is hard to do.
Katherine Bennett always came prepared and open for discussion. She encourages open discussion in a healthy way = while encouraging cognitive learning through group participation; Kumu presentation; student presentation; multi-media facilitators; etc. She adapted above and beyond with the many challenges we encountered with tech problems throughout the semester. She rose above the rest in her professionalism and adapting to new environments.
Although I hated doing them, the reading sheets were the only thing that got me to read those chapters and extra readings... So keep it!
She knew her subject matter inside and out. She's super smart and could elaborate concepts in lay mans terms.
Her expansive knowledge and perspectives on the diverse topics. Her listening and attending skills. Her seeking to find new ways to tie in the material and her dedication To seeking and presenting hawaiian and other minority perspectives. The way she validates what we share and gracefully and relevantly expands on the topic. I appreciate the detailed narratives she compiled to deliver with our grade on our sper awesome group projects. We worked hard on them and her resoonses showed she respected the work we put into it and really listened. She knew exactly what we presented and which areas we could have expanded on if we had more time. Much appreciated.
She knows a lot of history and knowledge of course. Also a very genuine person.
She clearly stated the importance of learning from history as it is important in understanding how we got to where we are at and our future.
She replies quickly to emails and always makes time for students.
I like how she lets her students share their learnings in class. Ex. Sharing current events different students researched help me gain perspective from different issues and ideas.
Kattie, is a dynamic instructor, she is very knowledgeable and passionate about the class that she teaches. She pushes you to do your best which helps students to strive in doing their best.
She responded efficiently to emails if i had any questions.
Very intelligent, very informative.
She always puts interest in the class while she teaches.
I normally find history classes pretty boring, but this was one of the better history classes I've taken. By talking about history, and constantly tying it to our present day issues, she made the class feel more relevant.

If you want to learn the materials presented in a healthy environment = I strongly encourage those individuals to learn from this KUMU: Katherine Bennett. Awesome !!!!!!!!
I know there is a lot of content we need to cover but it was overwhelming at times. Maybe we could have another group project over important topics in history so we can go more in depth in understanding them instead of skimming through it all.
She is an amazing professor who is engaging and well versed in her knowledge.
The reading logs were graded in conglomerate at end of semester so I had no gauge to see where if I was not meeting expectations. But I discussed this with her already and she first time she did it this way and is already evaluating how to improve it next class.
AMAZING instructor and adviser!!!
She made a boring class fun.
everything was good, I just wish the class was spread out in 2 days a week and not one 2 and a half hour long class. It can get really overwhelming.
Great instructor, always available to support the students. She was very personable and easy to talk to.
Lets go on more field trips!

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Communication, and fairness
On site visits were very informative and valuable.
The aspect that i learned and enjoyed most was how she demonstrated her knowledge on the class material that was given to me as a student. Mrs. Bennett also made us critically think of the class material. Yet she explained in detail what I as the student did not understand.
I enjoyed our community mapping project because it allowed us to view what resources we can utilize within our communities for our respective populations of focus
The field trips, the presentations, and specifically group discussions.
The most valuable aspects were examining the cultural, legal and systemic elements that affect our work with our clients. The level of work expected, presentations, group work and field trip were all well planned and helped to give a strong basis to build for the MSW program.
The use of article presentations to catch us up to the latest happenings in the social work field. After a Summer of not looking at school work, the presentations proved useful.
The most valuable aspect I found very interesting was the course was designed and delivered well in the two week 8 hour days. I also shared it with Kumu if only all our semesters were designed to be done in the two to five weeks. Another important facet of the course was that we did several individual presentations (3 I think) and a group work, which through the effort of the members in the group got done in a timely manner and done well. The most interesting aspect was the huaka'i (excursion) to Waikiki Health Center's youth project and the Chinatown mental health outreach project. The fun part of the huaka'i was that Kumu and us students caught the bus from campus and back to campus. She planned it well.
The outreach trip was the most valuable in my opinion. It helped for us to get a hands on view of the population opposed to lectures.
I liked how the course was practical and was a good bridge into the MSW program
Field experience, and reading material
The openness and the ability to share with each other was very valuable.

18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Friendliness
She is very knowledgeable and engaging.
Mrs.Bennett was organized and well prepared for each class. She gave great examples and illustrated the class material that was given to us as a class. If I needed extra clarity about anything in the class, she was more then helpful in giving me clarity by making the time to see me.
She was very quick over email and is always willing to help if asked
Her passion and level of commitment to her students learning experience as well as her encouragement and feedback were all very valuable and added depth to the ASIST experience. She helped to draw on our strengths and encourage us to move forward with confidence in the MSW program.
She attempts to take mundane information and present it in a way that catches the student's attention and evokes interest.
The most valuable and helpful feature about Kumu is her easy-going and casual style. Easy-going because she understood what pressures we were up against as advance standing, the weight of doing well was always at the forefront of our minds. Several of us in our talk story, worried, this is something Kumu in scheduling the assignments although intense, casualness was able to do in lifting the anxiety of passing the course. Another area for me that is most valuable, is she demonstrated her understanding and passion for the micro, mezzo, and macro levels on a personal basis. As for the micro, she emphasize self-care. Taking care of ourselves was just as important as taking care of others. She got us up from our seats to exercise. For the mezzo level it is about caring and ensuring the safety and sustaining of our love ones, our family. Without that peace of mind, we cannot be an effective helper to others. And, lastly, on the macro level it was the concern and passion for justice for all so that our efforts as Social Workers are not done in vain, rather in bettering the conditions for those in need in our communities. She exemplified these characteristics because as a Native Hawaiian woman, mother, sister, daughter, friend, and grandmother, this very same features are foundational to me.
Doing the field trip to visit Mental Health Institute in Chinatown and getting to walk around to observe how the staff does check in's with the homeless in that area.
Katie provide a environment where everyone opinion was valued whether it aligned with hers or not. She was often played devils advocate to help broaden our thinking.
Katie is easy to understand and is always there for students when we need her.
Katie is a wealth of knowledge within the field of social work. Her expertise within the law and social policy has influenced my decision in pursuing research on a macro-level of social work practice and social policies.
Katie is very personable and easy to talk to. She explains ideas and subjects well.

22. Other comments:
David Chandler was a big part of the enjoyment of the class. Students really got to know each other. Solmetimes too much emphasis on grading. More specific time on allowing all students to have Mediator role until both student and faculty satisfied.
The instructors need to give a lot more thought to what constitutes a meaningful homework assignment that promotes learning, and what is simply "busy work." For example, an email was sent out during that course that said since there was no assigned reading, the professor "found" something. Under this paradigm of teaching learning = volume of work. Not that the class was overly taxing, but there was a clear attempt to "fill space" with meaningless busy work. Further, what was the learning value of the exams at a graduate level? If indeed the professors feel that exams are necessary, they should at least be testing the depth and complexity of knowledge gained, not regurgitation of facts and simple concepts. This is not an undergraduate course. We are paying to be here because we intrinsically want to learn. Please don't offend us by questioning our academic professionalism. The class sessions themselves were fantastic. Katie and David are outstanding teachers, and I learned a lot from them and the format of class time. The practical focus on simulations what extremely helpful, and refreshing. I think the instructors did a wonderful job during the class.
I have had a wonderful course. I love the way that the instructor communicated with students and provided feedback to students. Thank you.
Katie is an enthusiastic and energetic instructor, who obviously cares about her students' learning. She is warm, considerate, and respectful about feedback and questions from her students. It was a pleasure learning from her and David (co-facilitator). Suggestions: - Provide feedback on assignments/exam throughout the semester, so students will know grading style and expectations. Also, rubrics on bigger assignments (such as research paper) and exams (if only essay or short answer) would be helpful. - Provide instructor (or senior students experienced in mediation) assessment/feedback on mediation skills instead of (or in addition to) student's "self"-assessment. - Allow at least one "excusable" absence (contagious illness, death in family, etc.) before requiring a make-up assignment, OR lighten make up assignment to 1 page instead of 3, OR have a discretionary absence policy.

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Well...the whole class was valuable, since it was an introductory class. It taught (very broadly) the basics of social work
The helpfulness of katherine and her passion to teach the class.
The lectures were great, since she is very passionate and interesting to listen to, and I also liked the group presentations and when guest speakers came, because we get lots of different viewpoints. I thought the learning opportunities were good, in that it forced me to go out and explore and learn more! I took more risks than I would have before, and not attended as many events.
Social Skills.
I found the cultural topics and real problems that we'd discuss in class that we face in hawaii very valuable.
Learning "cultural competence". I feel this is the greatest and most valuable concept to take from this class. It gives all of us the time to think of others and their environment/surroundings rather than just judging. Also loved having the speakers come in, especially the woman with Micronesian heritage (sorry forgot her name). She allowed us to see a different perspective.
That it relates to my life. & I enjoy this course a lot.
Everything. I think everything we went over in class was most valuable.
The ability to participate in lecture freely with comments/questions. The learning opportunities were a great way to see the resources offered in the community.
I enjoyed the background knowledge she had to share with us from her own experience.
all the helpful information for the beginning steps into Social Work
The Intervention presentations taught me about the resources provided in different organizations and therapy.

18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
She was very welcoming and approachable. She was fun rather than boring. She made sure we understood the assignments which were the main parts of our grade.
many examples were given during class, and the Prof. was available and eager to help
She was always available and had multiple ways for us to turn in our papers. She was friendly and passionate.
She is so warm and supportive, that I feel comfortable going to her for help, asking questions etc. She is so knowledgable about the field, and I learned a lot from her. She always comes to class with energy, even if she is stressed/busy, which is amazing!
She was easy to talk to and ask questions to.
She's very open and communicative and is always open for discussion on anything that us students found confusing.
She seems like an open book, ready to discuss anything. I like that she has a huge background in Social Work and the political side also. She got to give us real life examples of things that happen in the court.
She explains super well. & she is super helpful with answering questions to the class.
She was quick to respond to e-mails and was always willing to help if needed.
Great at explaining things/answering questions. I loved the way she plugged our lessons into real life scenarios. Very organized and knowledgable.
She is very enthusiastic about what she teaches and it shows. Shes open to anyone and up for helping students. She is very knowledgable. Makes class interesting the way she teaches with activities.
she is a kind, good-hearted woman and is always available to help with finding resources or volunteer work in the community. she is one of those professors that makes class enjoyable.
She is very knowledgeable about family law and the social work field but i wish that the information was communicated better.
She was very enthusiastic and answered every question I had. I wasn't left to fend for myself. When we had group projects my group & I still had problems to comprehend, we asked her multiple times to clear things up for us, and she was always patient with us.

25. Other comments:
It was a good class that I really enjoyed. However, frequently Prof. Bennett would go off on a tangent that would make the lecture hard to follow. Also, I found it difficult to take notes in the class as not all the important material was visually available (i.e no power points, not all the important things were written on the board, etc.) it made note taking difficult and i missed quite a bit of information that was on the midterm...
If this class had smaller, it would have been great to have some discussions!
She never replied to email questions in a timely matter. She also HARDLY went over her expectations for the final paper. She was too broad when explaining it, and it was hard to grasp how to do the final paper when she never answered your email questions. I also wish there was most small assignments, to help your grade more. And more extra credit oppurtunities
This professor was an amazing spirit to be around. But, it was hard to grasp concepts because when she lectured i felt like it was a bunch of ideas jumbled all together. Also, many times the lectures would drift off topic.

18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Her articulation in conveying the material
She was available when needed and easy to talk to
I really like Katherine and she has a tough job in teaching a history course. I have been in fun and engaging history class which I feel this class lacks. Most of the class sessions were lectures or videos. I felt that students would have to sit through lectures, and Katie has a lot to go over with little time. At times it feels that class sessions are rushed because she lectures fast, going over a lot of history. She knows her course material very well but felt she lacked the student engagement.
Her power points
Katherine Bennett is an awesome instructor,. She is so alive and full of energy. Sometimes I just want to pinch her cheeks as if she was a little baby. She is also very smart and knowledgeable on the History of Social Welfare. The only thing I did not like about the class was the whole history aspect. I will learn it but, I don't have to like it. I have never been a fan of history.

Learning from other students. I loved the layout of this class because it gave us a chance to learn from one another.
The most valuable aspects for me were in the cultural competencies, judicial elements, and reading responses. They all challenged me to think outside the box as well as to consider social work values and ethics in real-life situations.
The course was not really that necessary for the amount we had to pay even though we learnt something.
Using self reflection and critical analysis to develop an improved professional use of self.
Class discussions were great.
Class discussion was most valuable. It allowed me to think critically of issues and exposure to other thoughts and methods.
Class discussions were very insightful, especially the level of honesty regarding ethical dilemmas.

I appreciated that she always made herself available to the students and clarified things that weren't so obvious to all students.
Her skill in prompting our class discussion among my cohorts was exemplary. She facilitated numerous discussions and built into the classroom opportunities for us to lead other discussions. We had very good communication using readings from a vast array of resources. We were also afforded the venue to deal with conflict resolution.
The instructor allowed the students to lead and facilitate discussions, which allowed the students to learn from each other. Additionally, she engaged in discussions to enhance the learning without the need to control it.
She made herself available for assistance outside of class time. She brought to the classroom her expertise in different areas and related it to the course content.
Katie did a good job bridging the academic with the practice.
Supportive and available to help.

25. Other comments:
I appreciated that the practicum placement coincided with this course, allowing us to apply the course's learning outcomes to a professional setting.
I feel the practicum aspect of the course did not fit properly. Considering the accelarated program, I feel practicum assignments should be made prior to the start of courses in the Advanced Standing course- including ASIST.
I would have liked to see a little more facilitation when it came to professionalism in class. Sometimes it seemed like the class members were making inappropriate comments or jokes. I would have liked to have a class discussion when comments were made about professionalism in a graduate program and even offensive jokes are inappropriate at this level of education and training. I think Katie was a fabulous instructor this is the only area I feel could have used improvement.

Course was taught very well, especially for being a new class. Organization could use a little bit of work; for example getting a clear schedule of objectives to be covered throughout the course at the beginning of the semester. Overall though, no other complaints. Katie and David kept the class very interesting and stimulating, and I feel as if I am coming away with a clear knowledge and skill set of mediation techniques.
Great, passionate professors made this class enjoyable and interesting. One of the few classes I have been able to apply to everyday life. These professors truly grade and conduct their class above what is necessary or expected. Thanks for taking all of the time to make sure this class went well and we were liking it. Really appreciated! :)
Katie and Dr. Chandler did a wonderful job! They made a great team.

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The aspects of the course that were most valuable was how the instructor provided guest speakers of social work and how they can present to us what they do that is related to the social work field.
Learning all the different areas of social work.
The professor was very honest with us about being realistic in the real world.
It was nice having a professor in the same field that I plan on going in through social work that was able to give multiple resources and help through out the semester. Mahalo!
Guest speakers and group presentations
All aspects. And the book was a very good resource for understanding social work.
New strategies and problem solving skills needed to be known while interacting with a client while you yourself is a social worker
The lectures, the presentation from the speakers and the insight in the field of Social Work that she collected throughout the years.
The guest speakers were very interesting
The group project and research paper challenged us to get out of the classroom and do our own investigation of what we wanted to know and really teach it to ourselves. The guest speakers were knowledgeable and thought out and helped get different opinions other than Katie's and our classmates.
This course in general was very valuable in a way that we got to learn what social work really is as compared to what we think it is.
i want to be a social worker so i was very enthusiastic from the beginning. i got to have a better understanding of what i was getting myself into
writing the 4 reaction paper. i found that useful because it gave us a chance to show what we learn from different lectures and to put our personal experiences or feeling into our writing. it really shows that we as student pay attention and that we are interested in the field of social work. i really enjoy watching the film :once we were warriors", and "then there were none." i really got to see how these two movies relates to social work in regrads to having social workers, people living in poverty, dying of health issues, domestic abuse and so forth. i really made me want to become a social worker more and because seeing those problems and how it relates to my life i feel i can make a difference in others lives.
I establish a great foundation for entering into the field. The guest speakers she brought in to class were excellent.
Guest speakers
great in depth teaching.
the speakers
I have enjoyed listening to people come in and talk more about the different fields involved with Social Work.
Katie was able to take the information read from the book and through her lectures she was able to convey the knowledge learned through text in a manner that allows you to have a true understanding of the material. So I believe her contribution to the course was the most valuable.
The involving environment of the class made me want to go to class, and I am sure that the other students felt the same.

18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Katherine is a great instructor and really knows her stuff. You will always feel free to go talk to her if you needed to.
Very informative and helpful.
She has an incredible way to reach out to the students. I also like the way she carries herself.
She was upbeat and passionate about the class.
Her openness and willingness to support students
That you could tell she was passionate about her job and helping her clients to be the best they can be.
I find that her energy inspires me to be as charismatic as her because since the field of social work can be very depressing it is nice to see that her spirit has not been broken yet.
Easy to listen to and had a good way of presenting her topics to the class
Her background in the field gives a broader idea of social work and how it can apply in different situations not just in the social work field.
She is very outgoing and willing to help. She also has a good personality.
very understanding and thoughtful, loved her!!
she really there to help us, and she really care. she always available after class if we have any questions, and willing to help us with whatever. i love her drive and motivation, and determination that she shows when lecturing to us. it shows me that she happy with what she does and that i can be that way too. i love how she was very organized and kept to the syllabus and everything
she was great at getting back to me via email. she treats students equally.
gave little feedback
She really knows what she is teaching.
she always made us do learning opportunities that helped us to get out in the community and help
Katie's explanations of topics are clear and are easy to understand.
Her real stories and experiences.

Very nice.
Awesome professor!
Mahalo for the opportunity to participate in this class.
I really wish there had been a study guide for the midterm and we had taken more time into effectively writing a research paper. Maybe next time have an outline due half way through the year.
this was a great introduction to social work. if students are having trouble choosing a major they should take Katie's class it will make you want to become a sw major.
Not really engaged with the students & the success of the student in class.
The only thing I would say that limits this course is that it generally focuses on social in Hawaii. Examples and ideas throughout class are compared to Hawaii, where as I would like to learn about social work in other parts of the world and the rest of the United States
Thank you so much for this great class.

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
How a bill goes through the senate and house.
For me, the bill tracking assignments was one of the most valuable assignments. I felt this assignment empowered us because it really demonstrated how we can make changes as social workers and even just as citizens. I felt as though this assignment could be valuable to anyone. I realized how important it is to be involved in your government. I really saw the beauty of being an American and just how involved we can be in the government and make a difference in our state. Writing a testimony was valuable also, if it was not for this class I probably never would have known how to do one.
One of our assignments gave us the opportuniy to track policies that we felt strongly towards. We tracked and spoke about these policies in class and also debated the pros and cons in a group discussion. I really enjoyed the exercise, more importantly however, the discussion and the assignment taught us students that we can make a change in the policies that govern our lives.
Learning about policies
I found the powerpoints created were the most valuable in this course because I was able to turn to them when I did not catch everything that was said in the class.
Learning about the process of how a law becomes a law in Hawaii and how important it is for every single person here to be aware of whats going on in our legislature.
The whole semester was great
Going over many different viewpoints and playing "devil's advocate" a lot in order to see a broad spectrum of ideas. I enjoyed following a bill(s) closely and getting a better idea on how that whole process works. It was very confusing for someone like myself who knew nothing about it beforehand, but Katie explained it in a thorough manner and it taught me a lot.
Her enthusiasm helped me to take a closer look at the legislative process , that I now find very interesting and valuable.
The legislative tracking process was the most valuable because prior to taking this course, I had no idea what the process was. I also did not know the dates of when bills were introduced and how to track them. This is the one of the most valuable things I learned in this class.
Introduction to policy making and developing an awareness about how policies work at a macro level.

I like how thorough she was with all of the topics we discussed. I appreciate the variety of assignments and activities we had, I felt that they were opportunities that helped broaden my knowledge. I admire how knowledgeable she is and how she is open to class discussion.
She is kind, caring, and brilliant. Katie is remarkable in her ability to understand her students. Her knowledge and understanding of law, gives her the ability to teach this course to the fullest and explain concepts thoroughly. She always implores her students to critically think.
Posts everything you need to know on laulima
I think the fact she showed passion in the field she was teaching was really valuable because it showed the importance of the course.
She is very passionate about the topic and portrayed that, which kept us interested.
Great Professor
She is genuine about helping students learn. She conveys compassion and care that she understands what its like to learn new things. She is passionate about giving students every opportunity to comprehend policies and how all of that works, how they are made, and why it matters to us as future social workers.
She is very open for discussion on different views and policies. She is not biast and agrees that everyone should have a opinion (as long as its educated lol). She also clarifies any misunderstandings we may have on assignments and can guide us in the right direction if we need help.
Her organization and willingness to incorporate guest speakers.
Katie was very approachable and she always stayed after class in case anyone had questions. She was also helpful when we had questions in email. She was a fair grader and provided good and effective class discussions.
Shes is very helpful whem you need help and struggling . Shes straight to the point and clearly presents various topics thatvwe discuss and learn.

Thank you for being an amazing Professor, I am excited to share what I learned from your class with others, such as bill tracking, writing testimonies, and being involved in the government.
Maybe switch up learning styles and not always focus on powerpoint lectures
I think she was really lenient on students and I think she should have pushed her students to seek information outside of the class instead of suggesting that student can find information all online.
We should keep her.
Professor Bennett did a great job of making material that could be very boring, interesting and fun. I have had her for two semesters and greatly enjoy her teaching style. She is extremely knowledgable on the subject matter and I know if I ever have questions she will have the answer. Great teacher and her care for her students shows. I will miss taking her classes!!!

WOW. Now I'm very excited that I've moved to Hawai'i this past June 2012: to study and earn degrees in BSW & MSW programs at UHM. Professor Katie Bennett is an awesome instructor. She has an amazing positive glow=welcoming about her. She's a big promoter about healthy mind, body, sole, & spirit. Really enjoyed the 1st few min of ea class designated to Yoga=stretching=center=core strengthening. This really went well with obtaining an open mind and free spirit of listening to talk~story, presenting talk~story, and overall open communication amongst the course materials and the class participants. Whatever UHM is paying this professor is NOT Enough. She deserves biggest raises possible. She's risen to the top of my favorite professors in just one semester. No professor in my past years (a transfer student from CA~June 2012) have made it to the top of my favorites nearly this quickly. LOOKING FORWARD TO LEARNING MORE FROM PROF KATIE BENNETT. ALOHA !!!!!!!! MAHALO.
Worst class I have ever taken at UH, and I was very excited about it. Professor did not excuse absences that I had due to illness (I spoke with her about them). At the end of the semester I gave up trying to communicate with her. There was no critical theory presented in the class, and people with different perspectives had to defend themselves and their views very strongly. I was happy I wasn't one of them. I got the feeling that social work's concept of "helping" others is about defining them and fitting them into boxes. Professor was usually very hassled and disorganized, and even brought her baby to class. I am all for flexible work environments but it was very distracting. Lectures did not have strong visual components, which led to lots of confusion about the midterm. Many people I knew who studied more than I did got Ds (I got a B and I was disappointed). The grading seemed very subjective. I really appreciated the professor's enthusiasm but some of these obstacles were hard to overcome.

The instructor was passionate about the subject, which was transmitted to the student. Some students were disrespectful and regularly held side conversations. Really appreciated this class and the instructor. Mahalo.
Great teacher whose enthusiasm is infectious. I learned a lot about social welfare and feel like I have a much broader idea of what it entails. Great class!
Insightful class. Well done.
None.
Katherine Bennett made a difficult topic (History) interesting. However, increasing information on Hawaii's social welfare systems and decreasing information on United State's(continent)would have been better. The super awesome history project was strategically planned and doable. But, group work always has its challenges.
Katie ROCKS>>> I loved her class.
Our Kumu was always cheerful and welcoming especially her class was after lunch or after a 3 hour break. She was always pleasant and smiling. She had this bounce about her that was lively. As for the subject, it helped to reinforce for me some the history I already knew. She's well versed in the history of Social Work, was able to convey through the video's on what it is to advocate, what social justice is and what discrepancies and inequalities existed before and now. I believe in talking with my cohorts, as for the historical perspective tied into social work made a difference in knowing who we are, where we come from, what our kuleana is and will be and why we are or will be doing what we're here to do. Mahalo plenty Kumu....see you soon...next semester.

I like how this course gives us an insight of social work by having various guestspeakers from different areas of the field. I also like the fact that this course actually opens our eyes to see the issues that our communities are facing. This class is an awesome introduction to the field of social work for anyone who is interested.
Mrs. Bennett is an excellent instructor. I, and others i am sure, have learned so much from her (the way she is as a professional and a person) and from the course material. I am fortunate to have taken this class with her as my instructor. she was always available off hours via email and I really really appreciated that. the course was very well prepared, even when she was out on pregnancy leave, all of the guest speakers were phenomenal and moving. I was enlightened in every single class I attended. I gained so much new information. I loooove this course! Mrs. Bennett couldn't have done it better! She's a blessing to everyone. She's very knowledgeable and cautious with copy writing anything, lol. This was an excellent course!
Wonderful teacher. She knew her material very well and was very passionate about what she teaches.
Even bursting at the seams with her baby, and on maternity leave she did an AMAZING job! Great professor, easy to talk to and always available.
None.
Katie is definately a special person who exibits excellence in her knowledge of subject and an outstanding educator in her feild. I wish more teachers could follow her passion for teaching, it would make a huge difference in a learning environment.
The class environment enabled multiple people to speak at once and over each other, which bothered a number of us, who discussed this outside of class frequently.

This was the best course I have taken thus far at UH Manoa Mrs. Bennett was an excellent teacher who challenged all of us to become better community members by aloting extra credit points for community service, this is rare but wonderful!
This was a great class and I enjoyed it, I loved the atmosphere that was given.
I really enjoyed being in Katie's class. This is the second time I had to take this class and this time around I really learned alot. I hope she comes back to teach more..
I believe Ms. Katie has a very strong passion for helping the next generation learn more about what is available to helping the less fortunate and under-represented here in Hawaii.
she's an awesome professor. She really made the material in this course easier to understand and she's very friendly. We do relaxing exercises which i think is great because it will help us to use them in our field of social work.
Katie Bennett is a GREAT teacher. I learned alot and enjoyed her class very much.
There was not nearly enough reading required for this course. This is a university level course, it is a joke to have 3 pages of reading or only 20 pages of reading a night for a class. This is a 200 level course, I expect more like 50-70 pages of reading per class period. I was disappointed when we were learning about the history of social work that we acknowledged the limitations of the textbook's focus on white america, but we never delved into the other historys. Professor Bennett also was biased during this unit, and said that it was boring, and that we only needed to know the few buzz words and key dates, she didn't go into depth with any of the history. Other than those things, this class was fantastic and fun. I love Professor Bennett, she is both professional and funloving, she was very enthusiastic and made me appreciate the social work profession.
Loved this class! The thing I loved most was having different speakers attend class and explain different ideas/areas that are relevant to social work. I found out a lot about what people do as social workers. Thank you Katie for being upbeat and flexible when needed to!
I enjoyed this class and Professor Bennett, she was joy to have as an instructor. Her class was always open for discussion and so was she. The only critic I have is that she should utalize the book more. Even though her lecture covered the materials in the textbook, her lectures were more general rather than specific and detailed. The textbook was a great source of information and students should be pushed to read it. The reason for that being is that this is an intro class, the students should have full understanding of everything social work.
