9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Dr. Sut Jhallys lectures were pretty valuable.
I found the videos to be very thought provoking and interesting
As the course was online, the use of the discussion board was helpful to engage in discussion with other classmates. Unfortunately, this discussion was limited and not required to go back and forth, so it often just took form in a single response to what someone wrote. Probably the most valuable aspect of the course was access to a multitude of lectures and videos online that helped create synergy with the course material and the assignments (based on the videos watched). With a lack of human interaction and discussion, the videos served to present multitudes of perspectives that we could use to negotiate our own interpretation and understanding of the course material.
better understanding visual communication
I learned a lot through the text and films and then having to apply the information from the text and films into a paper. there was a lot of writing but after the first two papers i could really see an improvement in my writing skills and my ability to apply concepts from the course. Mary Conran was very helpful in her comments for improving my papers, as well as encouraging my abilities. The Instructor didn't hesitate to tell me when I did something well, I really value constructive criticism. I think this is a great course with a great instructor and I have already recommended it to fellow student friends of mine for their future writing intensive needs.
I truly enjoyed the way the readings were complemented by videos and film lectures. I feel this was a great way for teaching an on-line class.
The material was well chosen. I specifically like the book about National Geographic
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
None.
The discussion board peer responses didn't bring as much value to the course experience as they could have were there more time and necessity to interact. In each paper we wrote there was a required quota of key terms or concepts that were from the week's reading. Though we could choose the terms/ concepts from the reading in our analysis of the film, I found that it limited my writing because of the necessary space that 10 terms, their definitions, the proper use of the terms and tying it all smoothing into a coherent argument took. I do recognize that the terms that I used I learned and understood with great depth, and so in that this format helped me retain more information from the course, it was definitely helpful. But it unfortunately came at the cost of some more interesting arguments that I had been interested in making or going into greater explorative detail with.
None, everything i learned in this class was relevant to the topic and interesting in everyday life.
Unfortunately, the summer period is short thus the class becomes super intense. And at times, the material and due dates were too close together.
This course was about Visual Anthropology and Visual culture and we were required to watch movies, but all of the assignments were writing. I think it would have been interesting to create our own visual anthropology instead of just writing about it. It might be because this is a writing intensive course, but I thought it was missing the main element.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
n/a very good course
None.
I think it is very difficult to teach a course like this online, especially because anthropology benefits so greatly from discussion. And even though I think the course could benefit from more use of the discussion boards I think that with limited time during the summer, Mary Conran was asking an appropriate amount from the students. Additionally, increased discussion on the boards wouldn't be an entirely appropriate substitute for the lack of presence of other students, the teacher, and differing points of view.
less required books 3 is too many
Nothing, its great. I was initially a little intimidated by this course, because i had never taken an online class and the syllabus basically tells you all the writing that will be done and it was a little scary. but as the course begins it is all VERY reasonable and manageable. as long as you follow the suggested readings and are at-tentative to deadlines clearly presented the course is great.
I believe the syllabus was very clear and precise especially since we only have 6 weeks in the summer session. Also, the assignments were well organized and supported our progress towards the last research project. Overall, this was a great class.

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Writing to think through the theories and concepts presented in the course through various sources.
Most of the assigned readings really helped and the movies were fascinating to watch!
Readings and documentary videos were usually very interesting. Promoted critical thinking.
I truly enjoyed learning about this topic. I found it to be fascinating, especially getting familiar with the terminology and theories surrounding the topic of consumerism.
This course taught me to be more critical of the images presented in advertising.
The videos have been very valuable regarding the theories and concepts we are learning in this course.
all aspects were valuable because they are interrelated.
All the modules are very valuable because I learn a lot about theories and important concepts behind the idea of consumerism culture.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Would have liked to have a more informal class discussion / stronger discussion component. However there was a lot of reading/writing to be done otherwise so this may not have been too feasible.
Hard to specify
Time constraints. But can't really be helped.
Again, a lot of interesting material packed up in a compressed time. However, M. Conran did a great job at highlighting the important relevant material, and organizing our class' materials.
Everything we learned was valuable.
I think all of the materials for this course were pretty relevant to the subject matter.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Just a suggestion based on something from another online class I took this semester incase you do another online course again. The professor did a weekly podcast to discuss what was coming up this week. This gave the distant online medium a slightly more intimate feeling.
no logo one of the first movies instead of the last.
There was a lack of interaction which led me to learn very little about our instructor and her views on what we were learning. I thought it was a bit too structured provided that we were turning in the same assignment in three times (discussion post, assignment text area, and uploaded document), and could have used the discussion section to give the class more meaning instead. I think I would have gained more from the class and better understood the material in a more casual setting with the presence of the instructor. I also had a hard time putting together the documentaries and the readings, and felt that a pdf lecture or mp3, or even an interactive presence on the board in form of casual discussion, would have helped. Otherwise, the class was very well organized, and the instructor was a fair grader who took an interest in what we wrote and was responsive when reached via e-mail.
The course was condensed into six weeks. Sometimes a little difficult to keep up with. What if the course was spread over an 8 or 9 week period?
I think if the assignments were a bit more spread out especially during the last week of the session, since we do have the research project due.
This online course was taught well.
I think cutting down required discussion for the final research paper would actually allow us to focus more on writing the weekly discussion- for example, I think sharing topics and first draft peer review is enough peer feeback for the paper. Maybe split the students up into groups and having them peer review each others papers would be a more efficient way to review. Also, the syllabus was a little hard to get through with all the information and detailed instructions for assignment submission and I missed some important details. Is there a way to simplify the assignment submission process?
it will be more interesting to teach this class during regular semester and NOT ONLINE to allow more direct exchange of ideas about consumer culture from students who might come from different cultures too.
This class has been great as it is. Just need to add that if this class can be taught at normal class (not online), then, it would be very resourceful for students to learn, and share their ideas.
19. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?

Helpful. Prompt. Organized.

Passionate, interested in how we do as students, a good instructor.

14. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Honestly, of all the online courses I've taken and had an issue weather it was about an assignment, question or if links, slides or pictures were not properly working; she has responded in a timely matter. Whereas other courses I've waited a day at or two at the most. It shows that she is committed to her students and want them to become successful.
Although it's only a summer online class, which makes it very course short, and my contact with her limited, from what I've seen so far, she is a very good instructor. Her responses when I needed help were quick, and there's many easily available resource material to help me get through the course.
My overall evaluation of Mary Conran is that she is a really good teacher who strives to help students succeed in the course she is teaching.
She is a really good teacher and tries to have one on one discussions with her students. She also urges us to succeed in passing her class, she reminds us when things are due and some dont respond, its only fair that the students who lack to read their emails get the grades they deserve. But she is a nice strongwilled person who gives second chances. I had fun taking her class this summer session, it was a little tough but i like the challenges she dished out for us to overcome them. Shes the S***!!!
Awesome instructor! Open-minded, sincere about others opinions and judgements. Very responsive. I enjoy her online course.
A good teacher with a lot to offer. I wish I could have taken a live course with her instead of online.
She helps whenever I need help and she appreciates are effort we put in our work. She encourages us to learn and enjoy what we learn.

19. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I enjoyed the course overall because it helped me to better understand people, their culture and issues in the world. I also like the class discussions and the peer responses, it's good to read things from a different perspective or opinion.
So far I've enjoyed the Current events assignments. I've always liked checking on the news of the world and to be in the know of what's happening, but I've never found much time to do it. This course helped me be available to do that, analyze it and also earn a grade at the same time. Pretty good if you ask me.
I enjoyed the discussion contributions, one during each week of the scheduled course. The questions that she'd have us answer were very critical and helped me to have a better understanding of the course.
I liked everything! it makes a connetcion with our minds and is able to unlock things we may not have known before.
The video sector that was given to us by the instructor. I could see hands on what we were talking about and its meanings.
Class discussions, readings, and interesting videos.
I liked how we were able to put the real world and what we learn together.
20. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Being this is a summer online course, I fully understood what I was getting into when I registered. However, some of the due dates for the amount of assignments was a bit overwhelming but I'm sure that goes for all other summer online class.
Hmm, I have a love/hate feeling about how short this course is. At the same its very convenient as a summer class, yet the course is too interesting to skim through so quickly.
There wasn't anything that didn't like doing while taking this course.

Reading from the text, "Humanity".
Although it is a summer course and everything is compressed into a month, there was a lot of reading.
21. Other comments:
I don't have much to say, just that I hope the rest of my courses will prove as interesting and well-made as this one. I've enjoyed the weeks I've spent on the course.
I love this teacher, so much to learn, interesting, and informational.
I hope to take another class from Ms. Conran! Thumbs up!

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Well it was on an online, so i have to evaluate the course a little differently, but overall I felt that the aspects of this course that were most beneficial were the online discussions and the paper.
I believe the discussion postings as well as the peer responses were really valuable to me because it allow me to see how my other classmates grasped the materials and to see where our understanding and views were similar or different.
She teach contemporary issues of tourism.
i learned a lot about the anthropology of tourism, just in general never thought that that even existed
I felt the discussion contributions were a valuable aspect of the course.
Mary gave a lot of honest input for peer discussions, exams, and the research papers. She made everything flow well with each other, making everything we learned connected to each other in the long run. Interesting topics were picked for the course. The assignments that lead up to the exams and the research paper were very helpful and it made the transition to each assignment very clear.
It is online and the fact that the instructor always remind us the progress and keep us informed.
There was a lot of reading involved with this class, so it was good to get a change of pace and switch to different medias like videos and movies. Those really helped a lot to better understand the concepts we were reading about in our readings.
I found the weekly discussions to be great at expressing opinions and viewing the opinions of others. The whole course revolved around tourism which is extremely important when tourism is one of Hawaii's biggest economic resource.
good communication with the teacher when help was needed.
a greater understanding of tourism using interesting materials
Learning about the effects that tourism brings especially to local communities.
Doing the daily readings were helpful when it came to writing the weekly discussion papers.
Everything! There were a lot of readings, since it was summer session, but she did a great job of breaking it down so that we could get the readings doen. She also had videos to go along with the main concepts, which was also very helpful.
I have a new way of looking at the world/industry of tourism.
Great course for someone who has no background in anthropology. learned quite a bit. weekly discussions/peer responses was helpful in seeing what others thought about course readings.
I really enjoyed all the readings and the videos. They showed me a different aspect of tourism I never thought about. Loved the online books and the pdf files, made it easier to read the material.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The midterm because the directions where loosely written
I would say the due date were at first a bit challenging because they were on different dates, and sometimes I was not fully clear of what or when it was expected to be submitted, especially in terms of the peer response on special assignments like our projects. The weekly peer responses were had clear instructions.
all the reading, i know its a WI but for a summer course i would think it would have been consolidated a bit
TOo much reading in too little time. Drawback of summer classes.
None
many texts, perhaps journal articles could have been substituted?
there was a lot of reading, more than I thought was necessary. Some of the books we were required to read were confusing and hard to understand completely.
the timetable
N/A
A lot of reading, but it was understandable since it was a summer session. Most of the readings were very interesting.
I felt some of the readings weren't particularly fun to read.
Midterm was a little long and tedious, but the right amount of challenging
so many books to buy, but the syllabus came out so late had to pay for express shipping in order for the books to arrive on time.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
It would be nice to incorporate a few on-line lessons where we could actually see the instructor explaining some of the more challenging concepts.
for an online course she was very helpful if we needed anything, i had many questions so it helped that she emailed right away
Make sure her syllabus matches up with her assignments and requirements. Also remember that this is not everyone's only class or that just because its summer doesn't mean that we have a lot of free time some of us work and have other classes so piling assignments on top of each other gets students no where. Having a discussion paper, peer response, ethnography paper and a final exam in the same week on top of work from other classes or work does not give students the opportunity to put the full effort into the assignment.
None, it was really a well thought out class
At times, there were many assignments due in a single week. Maybe spread it out to mondays, wed, and fri when there are many assignments due. However, with that said the course was doable with the workload required. Hopefully the final is not as long as the mid-term.
more direction on the discussion board. Perhaps steering the weekly discussion, or providing input might help keep the conversation going in the right direction. It became a post only situation instead of full on discussion.
More teaching of the material from the teacher. I feel like a lot of the teaching and learning was done through just reading and answering questions.
Since its an online course, have one source for readings and more videos

20. Other comments:
I truly enjoyed this class. Thank you for letting me add. ;-)
i dont think 7 books is necessary for a summer class, never in my whole college career had i ever bought that many books for a semester let alone 1 class
Though it was an on-line course, Mary was able to create an atmosphere where each of the students were very respectful and honest with each other.
Really a great class, I hope you enjoyed our work as much as we enjoyed each others.
I really enjoyed this course and learned a great deal about tourism. I think that this course is extremely valuable especially since tourism affects the Hawaiian Islands greatly. I would recommend this course, as well as Professor Conran based on the content she assigned for the course.
great job!
Interesting material, but there was a lot of reading that I felt was at times unnecessary. Overall I enjoyed the things I learned.
Professor Conran did a wonderful job of being available to students and clearly presenting everything that was required for the course. I couldn't have asked for a better Professor on this online course.
The books were helpful but some of the chapters we read were very opinionated. It was unclear if we would be penalized if we write counter answers to what the readings said. The books as a whole were helpful, although we did not read it entirely therefore buying them seemed more expensive than necessary. Maybe next time you can make copies of the selected chapters for the books with lesser readings and have them for purchase at the copy center.
She was a great teacher. This was my first anthropology class and she has made it very interesting.
