12. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
|
| Lots of stuff |
| camera movement and lighting |
| Aesthetics and style |
| I acquired a greater understanding and appreciation for what a cinematographer does. I also gained a greater knowledge of operating the camera, as well as how elements of cinematography is used to emotionally drive a story.
This will definitely benefit me in conceptualizing lighting schemes, production design and shot selections for future films, thus enabling me to enhance my storytelling visually. |
| Lighting skills |
| I am able to create a mise-en-scene that can take an ordinary scene and make
it more relevant or have visual effectiveness. |
| Just learning the technical things, and how to properly light a scene, how to properly expose, what
to watch out for, things that you can do to make the shot more deep and things to consider in
terms of content even in the way you light or what kind of film you use, etc. |
| I learned to overcome my fear of the perceived notion that the technological-scientific aspects of
cinematography was too difficult to understand. But I also realize there is a whole lot more to study. |
| A better understanding of the role of a cinematographer and greater knowledge
of the technical aspects of film making. |
| The specific details about lenses. |
| learned a lot about lighting. |
| The understanding for the types of lens and variety of lighting and how lighting can be a key
element in your film. |
| Before taking this course, I was intimidated by lighting but after taking this course I have a greater
sense of how to place lights and how to choose them appropriately which is a big skill for me to pick
up. I can say I can confidently light much better now. |
| I understand now just how technically involved cinematography is and this class for me was the
basis of what to apply out in the field. |
| I gained confidence. In the beginning I was really tentative, but this class gave me confidence to shoot films well. |
| A better understanding of cinematography and the elements of visual design as it relates to
story telling and the impact an image as on a viewer.
I also learned more about the technical aspects of lighting and cinematography that can be
applied to capturing an image on camera. |
| More in depth strategy and techniques for professional lighting and composition. |

20. Other comments:
|
| Anne's cinematography class challenged me greatly, but in addition to being very enlightening (pun intended ;-)) it was also very freeing. The exercises and projects she assigned allowed me to "play" with ideas and concepts that I would not feel comfortable doing in larger shoots.
Anne, you rock! |
| . |
| loved the class. |
| This was one of my favorite classes taken in the ACM. Anne Misawa is very organized and really
knows what she is teaching well, and she is still able to teach it to us starting from a beginning level
we can understand then going into more advanced teaching when we are understanding the basics. |
| I plan to take her class again. |
| I like the combination of lectures and applying it on projects. I think its also important how one
can use practical lighting. |
| I feel like grading can be very hard in this class however it is understandable of why it should be
that way and in that aspect I respect the course and Anne Misawa's decision in they way she teaches
the class. |
| One of the best courses I've ever taken. Anne is a great teacher, I learned the most technically from
this course. I wish there was an advanced level to this where we can do more production but from
what I took from this course was already a lot. The books were great selections, very good to read.
There's nothing I can really say to improve this course :) |
| This was one of the best classes I've had in the ACM program. Aside from telling a good
story, the most important aspect of a making a movie is to capture beutiful images on screen
- expecially the image you want, the one that helps you tell your story. Even though I have a
moderate working knowledge of photographery, this class went far beyond that and really
helped deepen my undertand of tthe emotional impact conferred by composition. It was also
really enjoyable and.
The assignments were very responible in terms of the workload, and very effective at helping
students understand different concepts of cinematography. This class actually increased my
interest in photography and cinematograpgy dramatically - I did not previously have any reall
interest in the two areas, but I've bought a camera and I'm very interested in taking
photographs as well as working as a DP on student productions.
In addition to being critical of the acting, and story as I watch a movie, it's almost impossible
for me not to notice a beutiful shot and not appreciate the technical set-up behind it.
The visual expressions assignment gave me a collection of reference photo's that I intend to
add to and use to help communicate concepts with collaborators on future projects.
The only real criticism that I have for this class are the text books. They are clearly written by
people who have excellent experience and technical knowledge, but little or no teaching
experience. They are both very dry and difficult to read, and Malkiewicz in particular tends to
use technical terms without explaining them, and skip over basic but important information of
various concepts. Even sections that I had a good general knowledge of were difficult to
read because of that. I don't know if there are better text books out there, but I certainly
hope so. |
| Anne is a great teacher and the ACM would be lost without her. |

20. Other comments:
|
| Enjoyed the class and liked her teaching style |
| This course was very very educational, I learned a lot by having to plow through the projects and work with many different types of people. There were many many challenges, but it was working through those challenges that taught me the most and showed me what I was made of. Like anything, when working with a group, it really depends on the group that will make or break the experience. But I understand that is not in my control and it is just something that has to be dealt with. I appreciated Professor Misawa keeping things organized and overseeing the classwork very intently. I appreciated her effort to teach us and give us a variety of projects and homework assignments to aid in our learning--it was a lot work, but I've learned a lot and nothing was a waste of time in my opinion.
Not that this is a criticism, just my learning style, but I think I would have liked to have had more direction or instruction throughout the projects before we did them rather than critique after the fact. I know that one school of thinking is to let the student to learn by doing and not to dictate their process, but I think there is a balance where as a student I need more specific instruction, especially when they have no idea what they are doing. There were times when I things could have done so much better and students probably could have learned more without having to go through the headache of making mistakes had there been more explicit suggestions or opinions given.
But all in all, it's a great concept to have a class based on a group project with each student give a specific position to concentrate on with the oversight of a professor. |
| Great and fun course. |
| fun, but a very work-heavy course that requires your utmost effort throughout the whole semester. |
| Please keep up the great work! |
| I think there should be more emphasis on the final project. I think if we would have just had to focus on the final and not worried about the other two it would have been less stressful and more fulfilling. |
|
