20. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Production. Hands on learning while also learning from my peers and teacher on set.
Working with my classmates
I enjoyed the group projects and the workflow for them.
Great group projects and push towards a more professional style of filmmaking
I liked the group work aspect of the course. Having everyone in a specific role, getting a grade for it seemed to make the stakes higher, and people work harder in their individual roles. I'm glad it allowed me to focus in in a specific role, and that Anne provided advice and support for that specific role.
I like the fact that this class designated roles to each of the students. I've always found that one of the most challenging aspects of making a student film is finding competent crew that are available for all of the shoot dates.
That we were able to do a lot of collaborating. If not with the group, but also with a partner on the smaller assignments.
I liked having to work in a group with differing personalities and work ethics. It's a hands on experience with human interaction.
Working with peers to work on a film from preproduction all the way to post production. Personally developing and learning from group collaboration.
Filming
I liked her ability to make everyone's role important. There was no concentration on just the director, dp and production designer. Sound and editing had their input as well. Everyone just felt important and a part of the class.
I liked working on the two productions. It wasn't always easy, but I believe the challenges we faced will better help us to prepare for the future. Also being able to participate in different roles in each production really helped me to understand, appreciate and respect each role. I also really enjoyed reading The Moviemaker's Master Class. I loved learning about the successful directors in the industry and how diverse the film community is.
21. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Directors Presentation
Being in class for long periods of time
The way the books were used in class could have been better. Once we start working on projects it begins to take up a lot of time and a lot of people start to skip over reading to focus on the projects. If there were a way to more directly connect the reading to the projects that would be great!
Only meeting once a week
I can see some people feeling like they're not getting the most out of the class if they have a smaller role. The Shanghai project this semester was challenging, and while I learned a lot and thought it was a positive experience, I think more time to focus on our final group project would've been more beneficial.
I feel like, although it was definitely a great learning experience, the Shanghai shoot added a little too much extra work for our groups. The additional movie seemed to throw off a lot of people and made us unable to focus on either project fully. Which, in turn, caused all four projects to suffer. However, at the same time, it is a great way to get to know your crew members. By the second film, everyone was very comfortable with each other.
The addition of having so much reading on top of production was overwhelming.
nothing in particular I disliked but I do wish the Shanghai project could have been more than a learning experience and turn out to be a more creatively collaborative project we can all be proud of from start to finish.
the extra presentations and questions
The 3 projects in 1 semester is asking a lot. I understand there is reasons behind it, but honestly - if we could focus on just ONE we could probably make it 10x better.
I didn't really enjoy our other textbook, The Visual Story. I liked the examples it gives from real films so they were relatable, but I felt the structure of the book wasn't as conducive to learning the material. I couldn't believe there was no glossary! If I wanted to study a specific topic, I'd have to read through the entire page over again to understand it. I think having a glossary to give a brief and effective statement would have made learning the principles much easier.

Anne is an excellent instructor.
I like guest speakers, and I think more would be beneficial to the class. Also more time in class to work in groups, and to collaborate with students from the other group. For example, if the cinematographers and directors from both groups could sit down and talk story boards and visual design I think that'd be a cool collaboration. Same for editors, prod design, etc. I liked that Anne was really invested in the class, always willing to meet, give advice, and visit set. Felt like she really cared for, and supported her students in this class.
Anne is an awesome teacher she knows her stuff and is always willing to go the extra mile to help. Thanks for a great semester Anne!!
I really liked the opportunity and guidance that was given by the professor to freely and creatively make a film with fellow colleagues from start to finish. I felt that I had creative freedom yet unbiased and helpful guidance to help better my work. I really appreciated the professor's willingness to help, be involved and meet with students when needed and resolve issues that came across in all aspects. The class environment was great too - relaxed, but challenging and academic.
Great Teacher who truley cares about her students and is understanding of life situations that may come up
Anne Misawa is a very patient and understanding professor with excellent input. I feel I can approach her with my concerns and her critique/feedback is very valuable. I will miss 410.
I have to say that Anne is one of the best teachers I've had, not only in ACM, but in my entire college career. She is not only extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what she does, she is also very obviously invested in making sure our productions were running smoothly. I loved that she would come to do set visits on weekends when she could have easily been doing something else on her days off. She is very accessible, easy to talk to, and responds so quickly to email! I really loved that. She is an amazing teacher and I would highly recommend her!

13. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
I learned so many valuable skills while interning in the office and on set. Documenting everything for my journals also helped to reinforce what I learned. I really enjoyed working in both atmospheres and really felt a part of the team. This internship really increased my confidence. I would strongly recommend that others participate.
I was given a chance to see what it's like to work on a professional production set and all of the efforts and hard work that go into it by everyone involved. I also developed a better sense of how I'd like to approach my career and which pathways that I should and shouldn't choose to go within the near future.
I've felt my ability to work with a wide variety of personalities has become more competent in my time here, and my patience in the field has proven invaluable on such a taxing production.
I learned how to apply my self. If I finish a task, I shouldn't have to ask someone what to do, I look for something myself that needs to be done.

Great opportunity! So glad I did it!
This is an excellent program for anyone looking to get their toe in the real world of film/tv production. By learning from actually doing, you get to see firsthand exactly how much time and money has to be poured into making the final product look as flawless as possible. I look forward to seeing more fellow interns make their mark in the industry!
The 5-0 internship is really great. I highly recommend students to apply for it. It great real world experience and it's a great way to network with others.

12. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
Before taking this course, I was intimidated by lighting but after taking this course I have a greater sense of how to place lights and how to choose them appropriately which is a big skill for me to pick up. I can say I can confidently light much better now.
Lots of stuff
I understand now just how technically involved cinematography is and this class for me was the basis of what to apply out in the field.
A better understanding of the role of a cinematographer and greater knowledge of the technical aspects of film making.
camera movement and lighting
More in depth strategy and techniques for professional lighting and composition.
I gained confidence. In the beginning I was really tentative, but this class gave me confidence to shoot films well.
I am able to create a mise-en-scene that can take an ordinary scene and make it more relevant or have visual effectiveness.
learned a lot about lighting.
I acquired a greater understanding and appreciation for what a cinematographer does. I also gained a greater knowledge of operating the camera, as well as how elements of cinematography is used to emotionally drive a story. This will definitely benefit me in conceptualizing lighting schemes, production design and shot selections for future films, thus enabling me to enhance my storytelling visually.
The specific details about lenses.
Aesthetics and style
A better understanding of cinematography and the elements of visual design as it relates to story telling and the impact an image as on a viewer. I also learned more about the technical aspects of lighting and cinematography that can be applied to capturing an image on camera.
The understanding for the types of lens and variety of lighting and how lighting can be a key element in your film.
Lighting skills
I learned to overcome my fear of the perceived notion that the technological-scientific aspects of cinematography was too difficult to understand. But I also realize there is a whole lot more to study.
Just learning the technical things, and how to properly light a scene, how to properly expose, what to watch out for, things that you can do to make the shot more deep and things to consider in terms of content even in the way you light or what kind of film you use, etc.

15. Comment on the instructor's concern for the students.
Anne was always making sure we turned in our assignments because she knew we had other courses so she would always email us reminders which honestly saved me a lot of the time. She was always willing to answer any of our questions no matter how specific they were and she answered them thoroughly.
She is very concerned
Anne is available and willing to help any students with any questions. She encourages feedback/discussion/questions.
She gets involved with her students and is willing and open to doing everything she can to help us learn the material. I can tell that her primary goal as a teacher is to see us succeed.
she is always there for us, and willing to give her time to help us out on the clock or not.
she reaches out to students. she encourages us to make meetings with her and to ask questions at any time.
Anne is a very caring teacher who looks out for her students' best interests. She does not let anyone fall through the cracks.
I enjoyed class and Anne was genuinely interested in her students work.
Professor made it easy for us to contact her so when we have problems, even on the field, she's more than willing to help.
Anne concern for her students is quite evident. She is always open to meeting with students and encourages them to do so if they need help. She frequently asks students if they are understanding the lecture, and if they are, she finds alternative ways of expressing the lesson, making sure they get it before moving on.
Very concerned and helps you out whenever possible.
She pushes you to do better and gives helpful criticism
Anne is the most responsive professor I've ever had. She responds incredibly fast to e-mails and is readily available for meetings.
I feel like Professor Anne Misawa is very fair in all aspects of teaching this course
She is very nurturing and supportive
The instructor was very approachable and tremendously accessible with the students. She also provided information and encouragement regarding other opportunities outside of class.
She has great concern for us, and wants us to be the best we can. She is approachable yet still holds a high standard for the class and really works to make her students as professional as possible.

One of the best courses I've ever taken. Anne is a great teacher, I learned the most technically from this course. I wish there was an advanced level to this where we can do more production but from what I took from this course was already a lot. The books were great selections, very good to read. There's nothing I can really say to improve this course :)
loved the class.
Anne is a great teacher and the ACM would be lost without her.
I like the combination of lectures and applying it on projects. I think its also important how one can use practical lighting.
Anne's cinematography class challenged me greatly, but in addition to being very enlightening (pun intended ;-)) it was also very freeing. The exercises and projects she assigned allowed me to "play" with ideas and concepts that I would not feel comfortable doing in larger shoots. Anne, you rock!
I plan to take her class again.
This was one of the best classes I've had in the ACM program. Aside from telling a good story, the most important aspect of a making a movie is to capture beutiful images on screen - expecially the image you want, the one that helps you tell your story. Even though I have a moderate working knowledge of photographery, this class went far beyond that and really helped deepen my undertand of tthe emotional impact conferred by composition. It was also really enjoyable and. The assignments were very responible in terms of the workload, and very effective at helping students understand different concepts of cinematography. This class actually increased my interest in photography and cinematograpgy dramatically - I did not previously have any reall interest in the two areas, but I've bought a camera and I'm very interested in taking photographs as well as working as a DP on student productions. In addition to being critical of the acting, and story as I watch a movie, it's almost impossible for me not to notice a beutiful shot and not appreciate the technical set-up behind it. The visual expressions assignment gave me a collection of reference photo's that I intend to add to and use to help communicate concepts with collaborators on future projects. The only real criticism that I have for this class are the text books. They are clearly written by people who have excellent experience and technical knowledge, but little or no teaching experience. They are both very dry and difficult to read, and Malkiewicz in particular tends to use technical terms without explaining them, and skip over basic but important information of various concepts. Even sections that I had a good general knowledge of were difficult to read because of that. I don't know if there are better text books out there, but I certainly hope so.
I feel like grading can be very hard in this class however it is understandable of why it should be that way and in that aspect I respect the course and Anne Misawa's decision in they way she teaches the class.
.
This was one of my favorite classes taken in the ACM. Anne Misawa is very organized and really knows what she is teaching well, and she is still able to teach it to us starting from a beginning level we can understand then going into more advanced teaching when we are understanding the basics.

14. Comment on the instructor's concern for the students.
Anne did a great job. Really enjoyed the class and learned a lot.
She is very helpful and nurturing and caring towards her students. That extra care especially showed when she would go out of her time to visit our film shoots to see how we were doing and to give helpful advice.
Anne made herself available as often as possible to help us with our projects and concerns. She has gone above and beyond helping us with our class work, and has prepared us for the next step in our desire to be professionals in this field of work.
Very concerned for all the students, helps them out. Tries to bring the best out of the students by challenging them. Fair and lenient towards work loads of students.
she is always there for her students and gives us her honest critiques and suggestions. but ultimatly says it is our disissions on how we make your film
Always available to help her students.
Professor Misawa demonstrated concern by making accommodations in her busy schedule to meet with each group of students, carefully monitor their progress, kept them accountable, and made herself available for any questions or concerns during each assigned project.
She was very diligent in keeping in contact with students and made sure to go above and beyond the expectation to do so.
Anne really showed dedication and sincere interest in the progress and development of each student, and always made a effort to make time to meet with students so that she could go over with them on any questions they may have had regarding the course work.
Always Made herself available for the students. Constantly pushed the value of comunication among teams. Gave equal, and spasific atention to all who needed help.
Was able to answer all of my concerns with project. Very helpful and gave very good advice.
Anne always makes herself available to help out her students.
Very caring and easy to talk to.

fun, but a very work-heavy course that requires your utmost effort throughout the whole semester.
Enjoyed the class and liked her teaching style
This course was very very educational, I learned a lot by having to plow through the projects and work with many different types of people. There were many many challenges, but it was working through those challenges that taught me the most and showed me what I was made of. Like anything, when working with a group, it really depends on the group that will make or break the experience. But I understand that is not in my control and it is just something that has to be dealt with. I appreciated Professor Misawa keeping things organized and overseeing the classwork very intently. I appreciated her effort to teach us and give us a variety of projects and homework assignments to aid in our learning--it was a lot work, but I've learned a lot and nothing was a waste of time in my opinion. Not that this is a criticism, just my learning style, but I think I would have liked to have had more direction or instruction throughout the projects before we did them rather than critique after the fact. I know that one school of thinking is to let the student to learn by doing and not to dictate their process, but I think there is a balance where as a student I need more specific instruction, especially when they have no idea what they are doing. There were times when I things could have done so much better and students probably could have learned more without having to go through the headache of making mistakes had there been more explicit suggestions or opinions given. But all in all, it's a great concept to have a class based on a group project with each student give a specific position to concentrate on with the oversight of a professor.
I think there should be more emphasis on the final project. I think if we would have just had to focus on the final and not worried about the other two it would have been less stressful and more fulfilling.
Please keep up the great work!
Great and fun course.
