7. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
I found that her ability to allow us to form our own thoughts and ideas about different subjects really was a nice refreshing way to think in a classroom. She also wanted us to give her active feedback and allowed us to be teachers just as much as we are students.
I learned a lot about how i would want to teach.
I found Dr. Li's teaching style and attitude most valuable and helpful about the course. I never felt under pressure, put on the spot, or intimidated in her class. She always helped students complete thoughts and made everyone feel comfortable sharing ideas and opinions. She really set an example of what kind of teacher I want to be and what kind of class I want to lead.
- Class/Group Discussions - Ethical Issues - Character Development
What I found most valuable and helpful about this course was that it really opened me up to the different aspects and approaches in American Education today. It covered all areas from historical, philosophical, to more contemporary issues faced in American Education. This course also helped to juxtapose American teaching with that of other countries. And I also found the ethical portion to be really challenging and interesting because those were not issues I would have thought to address, but helped me to think, "Hey, what if I did, go through that?". This class really made me think each time, through the homework, lectures, and presentations we did!
I felt that the teaching our research and work to others was very valuable. Also being able to share thoughts was great.
This course was great, possibly one of the best I've taken so far! What I found most valuable was how Dr. Li really encouraged discussion. Hearing Dr. Li's, as well as my classmates' perspectives and personal experiences related to education really helped me grow as a person and as a future educator.
Our ability to tell her our opinions about the curriculum and content.
I have learned how to weave into my thoughts to a deeper level of critical thinking.
The class was set up to assist us in learning the content by actually becoming the teachers. Dr. Li also created a very safe, caring, supportive environment, so we felt free to discuss topics openly. We got to know our classmates better, which established a community within the classroom. Having that sense of community really helped us communicate more freely and honestly. I also really liked the way the entire class was structured, starting with the history of education, talking about ethics, current policies in America, and abroad, then contemplating the future of education. It was well put together. I especially enjoyed the texts. Very poignant and applicable.
The ethics part of the course was helpful and learning about past education, present education and even sort of future education was cool to learn about.
I believe open class discussions with Dr. Li and other students was very fulfilling. Discussing and bringing up our own thoughts and feelings on the given content was a great eye-opener in how to deal with certain situations we may encounter as educators.
Dr. Li always had an optimistic attitude towards all of her students taking her course. I felt that she genuinely cared about me and my classmates.
This course is valuable to anyone not just teachers or people who intend to be teachers. I learned a great deal in this course and even more about myself and what kind of teacher I want to be some day.
I got a lot out of looking at the international perspectives of education, although I wish we spent more time analyzing this. I appreciate the videos you brought in simply because they got us to think. I like it when my perspectives are challenged with others.
The class discussions throughout the semester to hear other students experiences.
8. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
I don't think I would find anything from this course having no value. Everything we did was relevant and pertained to what we should have been learning.
nothing
I cannot think of any part of the class from which I did not learn or gain something. Everything was pertinent and inspired critical thinking.
The least valuable thing about this course, might have been the philosophical perspective probably because I am not a philosophy kind of a person, but it was interesting.
Nothing.
Nothing was least valuable or important or helpful.
none
Nothing.
Nothing!
I learned so much about myself through this course. Dr. Li really cares about her students and shows it. We had many deep, thought provoking conversations which challenged me to think critically.
The book review felt a little unnecessary, length wise, only because we already spent so much time discussing it.
Some of the videos were not as valuable.

14. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
She is the best teacher I have had at UHM. I would love to take more of her classes and hope that we stay in contact after the semester is done. She really pushed me to think deeper and inspired me to work harder at things I might not excel at immediately.
I loved that she allowed us to express our creativity and gave students classes to teach, that was helpful in practicing.
Dr. Li is an excellent professor. I hope she teaches other courses in the future because I would love to take more classes with her. I really enjoyed this semester.
she is very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. She is a great professor!
Dr. Li is a very well-prepared and organized teacher. She is also very willing to meet with her students. She shows compassion for others by asking them questions about their experiences and "positionalities". I think that overall, she has demonstrated great diligence in keeping us on track and updated with assignments. I appreciate her availability to students and even meeting up with us one-on-one to give us a meeting. I really liked that a lot! She is great, enthusiastic, and passionate about her work as an educator! Very good teacher, and a kind and engaging person!!
She is a great understanding teacher that is there genuinely in the best interest of her students.
Dr. Li is an excellent teacher. She created a very comfortable atmosphere in the classroom, and was always very supportive. She was always available for questions or concerns both in person and through email. If I could take another course from Dr. Li, I definitely would.
A great teacher who is enthusiastic and highly knowledgeable about the course.
Her focus was on more of a student based teaching, and i feel that this was an excellent idea because we learn from our peers around us.
Love her!
Her class was challenging, but the topics we talked about were really helpful and thought provoking.
Dr. Li is kind and easy to talk to. This being a small class, she made it more comfortable to state our beliefs and engage in out-loud critical thinking in class. She responds quickly to emails, and answers questions when you need them.
I would give Dr. Li a 10/10! She is an amazing professor!
Amazing professor and person. She really cares and relates the content we are learning to our own lives. Would gladly take a course with her again.
She is very open-minded and encourages her students to broaden their perspectives. She does not force information on her students, instead she lets them feel free to explore material in their own ways. I not only learned from the specific content she brought in, but also from her teaching approach.
She is an amazing teacher and really knows her stuff. And she also carries a lot of experiences that was helpful to the students.

19. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Very good class but I am not sure how many teachers would be prepared to teach it in a correct and interesting manner. Katherine Li does a wonderful job of just that.
She is very passionate and knowledgable. Her enthusiasm rubs off on the class and makes us engaged in learning.
This course was challenging but not overwhelming. I learned so much, but most importantly, I gained so much more perspective and open-mindedness about learning and teaching. Ultimately, I believe this class has significantly changed my teaching philosophy for the better.
that it is very effective and helpful.
This course has been intellectually challenging, yet fun and worthwhile.
It was great, I felt that I could say anything in this class.
Very interesting and helped me become more interested in the different perspectives of education as a whole.
i feel as though i really got a better understanding for what to expect in my teacher years to come. i understand the purpose of education.
I think every teacher needs this course!
This course was great. It made me think about a wide variety of ethical issues, and different things to bring into my 21st century classroom - it allowed me to analyze great teaching strategies, and learn to put less emphasis on the weaker strategies. Practicing these various strategies in class was very helpful in actually seeing how it will benefit students in the future.
10/10
Life Changing!
Necessary. I left with a different perspective than what I came in with.
I would recommend this class to other education majors or any future teachers. Gives you specific details about teaching

Good job, Dr. Li! Thank you for a very thoughtful and thought-provoking semester. I really enjoyed your class!
Mahalo Dr. Li! The way you taught the class was really interactive, giving every student an opportunity to contribute in their own way. Thank you for giving me some great ideas on how I can teach diverse learners when I get into my own classroom!

7. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
While I'm tempted to say the subject matter, which was quite broad and diverse, extending beyond simple "ethics". It was probably the Dr. Li's teaching style, itself, and how she facilitated the class that resulted in a very positive experience for all the students. She really brought the class together as a group. Being exposed to other future educators was also very meaningful
This is my first time taking an EDEF class and I'm surprise at how much knowledge I've gained. I'm excited that I can take what I've learned and apply it to my social work major.
She had a great open teaching style.
Dr. Li did a great job at using powerpoints, videos, and activities to help the class understand the material. The class was not boring.
our class discussions. They were so rich and full of great ideas. I loved that she encouraged us to speak our minds.
the understanding of the different dimensions teachers have to consider.
Because this is a teacher education course, Dr. Li went over all the aspects of a teacher. She broke it down into different topics. And for each of those topics, the class broke up into 5 different groups and we get a chance to present a section. And I really like that because we will be future teachers and having practice is very beneficial for us. I like it a lot better too because I know students in class make it fun and I really enjoyed other groups' presentations.
Direct interaction with other students through class discussions
I found it helpful that everything being taught in the class is a great introduction into the career I'm stepping into. All the content can be applied towards my future as a teacher and prepares me for what I need to expect to educate students.
I loved how the content we learned expanded my thoughts about teaching and how it varies between countries
8. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
If I had to pick something, I'd suppose it was the noisy overhead projector.
certain readings were not fully discussed
Some of the readings were so long.
nothing
Nothing was least valuable. Everything we did in class definitely helped me for the future. I recommend this class for future teachers!
One day a week class
Honestly, nothing.

14. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
An excellent exemplar of what it is to be a teacher. Her openness and "laid back" demeanor made me feel very free to share, as well. At times it felt as though she was speaking to us as if we were peers, and she often addressed us as if we were teachers already. I'm not sure how to articulate it because it is more than just "she taught material well". It's more like "she inspired us and exposed us to a very broad range of opportunities in education."
Katherine Li teaches with a lot of passion, she really engaged me into creatively thinking of new ways to change our screwed up education system!
She's passionate and knowledgable
a great teacher! She made me excited to become a teacher and taught me important lessons that I know I will use when I become a teacher. She allowed everyone in the class to feel comfortable; like the classroom was a safe place to express ourselves without being judged.
GREAT TEACHER! wish I could take more classes from her.
that she has the passion and knowledge to guide future teachers through their paths
She is such a great Professor. Actually she is Doctor. She performed very well, and she is so caring. I loved that she had all classes planned out. Instruction was very clear and thorough which I love. She also makes the class really interesting with her enthusiastic teaching!
Excellent teacher, sets high expectations and created great classroom environment
she's a great professor. She made the class environment comfortable for everyone's participation and I will definitely recommend her to anyone interested in taking her class.

19. My overall evaluation of this course is...
A fantastic course--not just for teachers, but for anyone interested in education, and how learning happens. Again, I feel it went well above and beyond ethics, and I very much appreciated that.
Fun, worthwhile class
a great class and interesting class about different types of teaching!
was that it allowed you to understand teachers in a different light. Even the grading of our journals, she expressed that it was important to know what you were being graded on and why or you may never know what the assessment means
I learned so much in this course and is very crucial for future teachers. This class helped me to understand the types of education and how they work.
Useful content that can be applied directly into field.
very beneficial for anyone going into the education field. Not a waste of time and content was engaging to learn.
It was a great course that I have learned a lot from.
20. Other comments:
I couldn't have asked for a better "first exposure" to the field of Education. It's gone a long way in helping steer me in the direction of being involved in education as a career.
My only complaints are the amount of reading and that the syllabus was written out a little confusing.

Great class, great professor, great environment, and insightful lessons.
