7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| I appreciated Hoku's ability to break down key concepts in Political Science, unfamiliar to some of
us, in a clear and concise manner so we could "catch up" and participate in the discussion. The
foundation laid in class and by our readings has really influenced my writing and thinking and made
the BC experience a full, well-informed one. |
| I found the most valuable aspects of this course to be those that involved
land-based learning experiences. Ma ka hana ka ike. There is no substitute
for sweat equity and getting our hands dirty. Course readings, lectures, and
classroom discussions were valuable as a foundation for the learning which
occurred outside the classroom. Mahalo nui for a great course! |
| Fabulous professor! |
| Getting outside the classroom and applying and living the concepts, practices, beliefs, etc. that
we discuss in class was invaluable. It is one thing to talk about it but another to actually practice
it on the land with the people who are doing it everyday. This component of the course also
allowed us to develop meaningful, long-lasting relationships with not only the communities and
cultural experts we were learning from but also our fellow students and professors who were
engaging in the same activities along side us. I am sure that we wouldn't have been able to truly
understand and internalize what it means to be an indigenous warrior for and on the land as well
as an indigenous person striving to decolonize our minds unless we had those outside-the-
classroom experiences. Also, the cultural exchange was extremely important and valuable to me.
Not only do we learn from, garner strength and inspiration from other indigenous people and
communities, but these types of experiences also help us to understand ourselves and our
specific experiences better, igniting the fire to take what we learned and apply it back home for
the benefit of our own families and communities. |

8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| None. Everything we did had its function and value, and each activity, reading, or project helped
inform the others. |
| At times I found it difficult to keep up with the amount of readings in the
limited amount of time. This is understandable because it is a condensed
summer course, but it did make it challenging to thoroughly process all of
the information being presented. These readings were, however, very valuable
in creating a foundation for land-based learning experiences. |
| None. |
| Unfortunately, our time was so compressed and so limited that at times it felt quite overwhelming--
all the readings we had to do, the assignments we had to write, the research for our own individual
papers, the activities we needed and wanted to participate in day and night--that there just wasn't
enough hours in the day or days in the week to finish everything well. It was just one amazing
experience after another to the point that we didn't really have too much time to reflect and process
each one before moving on to the next amazing thing. I am sure this couldn't really be helped, but it
definitely was one of the harder aspects of the class. |
| The entire course was rich with experience and applied readings. |
