Hands-on experience
I really enjoyed the trip to American Samoa. It was definitely a highlight of my graduate-level education. There are just some things that must be learned in the field. It was a very meaningful experience.
15. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
It seems the expectation is that a practicum puts together a report following a very predictable outline. Why not write a plan? Develop a media campaign? Create a film? A website? There are so many more creative ways to learn and document planning processes. I feel its time to broaden the scope of planning practicum outputs.

Prior to our trip, a lot of time was spent on seemingly small details. It seemed like some things could have been worked out by email but were saved for class discussion. We spent a lot of time reviewing minutes and emails that sometimes were not really related to our project. I feel our class time could have been used more efficiently. Lines of communication were not always clear, and we sometimes sensed tension and lack of agreement between the professors. There also seemed to be a lack of clarity as to the purpose and expected outcome of the project.
