7. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
The articles were really helpful. Also, the forums were good because we got to see other students' opinion on them as well.
What I found most valuable and helpful in the course is that this course offered hands on experience . I valued the hands on experience in putting myself out into the community. I think it helped grasp a better understanding on what civic engagement is instead of reading a book about it.
It was really easy to get in touch with Kiana
timely.
It was valuable to read the various articles because it broadened my perspectives.
I have gained a new attitude towards civic engangement that will positively effect my community. I really enjoyed the articles that were chosen by Kiana.
I found Kiana's weekly announcements to be very valuable and helpful in that they helped keep me on track. Also, because HON 303 is an online course, communication is very necessary.
I enjoyed hearing the opinions of my classmates, who helped me to see issues relating to civic engagement in new lights.
The most valuable thing about this course was the multitude of readings assigned to us. Probably second most valuable was how the professor posted our grades up as soon as possible so we could readily check up on how we were doing in the class.
I really liked most of the readings/articles because they were very informative and relevant to what we were studying. Many times, professors have students read pages worth of words that don't really help us learn the subject. Kiana was NOT one of those professors.
The face-to-face meeting was most valuable because I was able to see my mistakes and know exactly what I needed to do in order to receive a better grade.
I felt that since this class was online, it gave me more freedom and flexibility to work on assignments when I had time. It made the workload much less stressful and enjoyable.
The course helped me consider community service in a new light by providing analyses of the motivations and factors behind why community service is practiced and how it is perceived by others, and how its effects can be quantified. The online course format also helped me schedule the work around my other courses more effectively.
It pushes you to do community service. I still do not know what the term civic engagement is. I read a lot of things and there was not one clear definition.
8. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
N/A
What was least valuable and helpful about this course was that it was an online course. There's no personal face to face interaction with the other students in this course. I feel like its sad because through commenting on weekly forums and reading what other students I felt that the students are great people that I'd like to meet.
I thought that the responses required too many words. Often times when responding to a classmates prompt, I found myself rambling to make the word count.
not very lenient
To be honest, I think responding to postings by my classmates was not very valuable. However, I understand that it was necessary and helped us to see different views.
I can't really think of anything.
NA
I didn't like some of the longer readings, especailly the self-indulgent ones, for example the reading regarding social capital.
I liked just about everything about the course and would highly recommend other students to take this course. The 48 hour fulfillment I admit was not the easiest task (though it could definitely be done).
I felt that some of the assigned readings were pretty dense/overwhelming, but that may be because I am not familiar/used to reading pedagogical articles.
The discussions felt sort of disjointed sometimes, but this is sort of unavoidable given that responses are coming days apart from each other. All in all, I didn't find any major problems with the way that this course was run.
I disliked the readings. They were really long and boring to read. I did not learn anything from the readings or the course.

17. Other comments:
For my first ever on-line class it was extremely planned out for every week and the regularity of it made completing assignments on time for deadlines much easier. I appreciated the weekly updates and although there was a lot of reading the extremely clear directions from Kiana left me with no issues with the class.
Civic engagement is one of the classes that I can use the knowledge I've received and put it into use throughout my life. I enjoy learning about civic engagement and leadership it's such an interesting topic. You not only learn about civic engagement and leadership, you learn about yourself. Great class, very much recommend to students!
:)
Overall, great class!
I really enjoyed this class!
Overall, I'd definately recommend this class to anyone in the Honors program, as it helps one really get an idea of what it is like to work in the community.
I really liked how Kiana had set up the course so that we were allowed to work ahead if we wanted to. This made it a lot easier for me because I could work ahead when I wasn't slammed with other projects from other classes. I liked how we had deadlines though every week because it allowed us to stay on track and not fall behind.
The forum posts and comments are an interesting way of working in regular, small writing assignments that I don't think I've ever seen before. Writing concisely while still giving a useful amount of detail is a good skill for me to learn, as I tend to go on for far longer than is necessary sometimes.
The class was on a set schedule which was good. The paper assignments were not discussed clearly, there was no good directions for it.

19. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
She was very open in being available for her students. She is very knowledgable and very friendly to her students.
I really enjoyed that she was friendly, but strict at the same time. She didn't usb you so much that you were always stressed out, but she pushes you just enough for you to learn the content well.
Kiana is always willing to listen to students' concerns and adjust the course schedule to accommodate them. She is very friendly and creates a calm atmosphere in the classroom.
She always puts herself out there and makes herself available and approachable by anyone and everyone.
I enjoyed the flexible schedule, as well as clear outline of what was expected of the students in the class. Class discussions were also very useful and allowed students to interact with the class material in a more concrete way.
I like that Kiana is very flexible about things. She is able to work with students' strengths, meet them where they are at, and help them to grow from there.
Kiana's kind and caring personality made it possible for my classmates and I to open up in class discussions. The feedback she gives are very helpful and clear.
She's always available to talk and answer questions. She knows what she's talking about because she is a peer mentor, and we can see it because she is our peer mentor.
The in class sessions were helpful because we could talk conversationally with Kiana. She is so helpful.
She is a very encouraging instructor!
She is very lenient, but also diligent in the way she teaches and sympathizes with her students. Always there to assist, whether it is through personal conflicts with school in general or the details of the course assignments.
I found her class to be very structured and organized and I liked how we were always busy. There wasn't a dull moment in the class.
She gave me good grades.
I found her openness and sincerity to be the most valuable. Kiana was able to communicate effectively because her genuine care and interest in the subject matter. She held a firm understanding of the topics at hand, and I felt that the course was very well done.
Kiana was extremely understanding and easy to approach, so there was no fear of not understanding any of the material. If you needed help, she would give help.
20. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
N/A
nothing!!
Kiana's power point presentations are short, but take up a whole class period and do not seem to cover a lot of information that was not already in assigned readings. The art projects she assigned in class did not seem appropriate for a college-level course, they did not add anything to my understanding of the course content.
Nothing!
Nothing
It's hard to say, I don't think there is anything that is not valuable or unhelpful.
I don't know.
This was a great class. I thought she was very helpful and valuable in all aspects.
The class did not allow us to have any hands on peer mentoring experience, other than what we chose to do outside of class.
N/A
I think we did too many speeches and that took away from learning more material.
Most of the class seemed pretty useless.
I did not find Kiana Shiroma unhelpful.
It was great that we had so much flexibility and individuality when it came to completing assignments, but it sometimes reached the point of complete ambiguity. It wasn't always initially clear what the assignment was asking for.

26. Other comments:
The course seems to lack a clear focus. Peer mentoring is never firmly defined by the instructor or any of the readings, students seem to be expected to intuit a definition and operate off that for the rest of the semester. Students were required to spend no less than 8 hours out of class (4 with an organization or volunteer thing of their choice, 4 for a community resource project), which would be acceptable if the 8 hours had a clearly defined focus. Students need to be provided with instructor- approved organizations that are relevant to peer mentoring or students WILL choose anything they want, connect it loosely to the class, and will not actually learn anything about peer mentoring. Overall, I would not take this course again. The course content is not challenging and it needs proper framing: why do students really need to understand what peer mentoring is, or how to do it? What does this course have to do with the purpose of the Honors program, or the goals of the University for its students?
I just wish we had more time to really go in depth into some of the things. Like I wish we could have a better understanding of the other learning/development/mentoring strategies because I feel like I'm always only relating material to the topics that I researched myself from that initial student development project. Other than that, I think this class has been a lot of fun and I learned a lot from it.
This course allowed me to be more involved in organizations.
At first, some of the things don't really make sense as to how they relate (like the theories). But, once we moved further into the course and were constantly bringing the ideas back up, it all started to click. I don't know if there's any way for the connection to be easier to understand faster, but at least we were able to grasp the concepts with a little bit of time.
Highly recommending this class to my other honors peers.

14. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
I learned a lot in this course. I actually learned a lot about myself. I'm beginning to understand my personality and ways I can become a better leader. The material covered in this course is very applicable outside of the classroom.
The first half of the semester was full of hands-on activities that really got my brain going in a way much different from that of any other course. I found that to be very valuable.
I found the class size to be valuable. Since we only had eight people, and they were all girls, I felt comfortable sharing a lot more about myself than I normally would. We learned to be better leaders because of this because in order to be a good leader, you should be able to "let your guard down."
I loved that the class size was so small and intimate it allowed for people to open up and truly share with the class.
I found everything about this course very valuable and helpful. This class doesn't only apply in school, leadership applies everywhere in everyone and in everything we do. This class is applicable in any situation whether it's obvious that leadership is being applied to or not.
I thought it was great that this course was not just about memorizing theories and strategies of leadership. We were able to apply it to our everyday lives. I also learned a lot about myself and how to be a better leader.
oral communication skills research skills
15. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
I really didn't appreciate that we only met once a week. I liked having longer class periods because it allowed us to have discussions, but I felt as if I hadn't seen everyone or looked at the material in a while.
I was not so crazy about the last half of the semester. If our projects were spaced out differently (so that we had a project and then a couple of fun hands-on classes and then another project... repeat pattern) I would have enjoyed the course more.
None.
I think some of the papers and journals were monotonous but overall pretty much everything was helpful
I didn't like the fact that this class was only once a week. I admit, I have learned a lot within one class each week. However, I believe that if class meetings increased there would be more things that could have been taught.
nothing, it really was an awesome class

24. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
As far as teaching styles, I can't think of any suggestions. I really liked how we did actual activities (building a leader) and also lecture style. But as I had mentioned before, maybe meeting more than once a week would be great.
None.
Maybe a little bit more accepting of searching situations but overall Kiana is a great prof
Kiana, you're doing great as it is. Keep up the good work!
One issue that I had was regarding the speech rubrics. When we presented in partners, it was not clear that if one partner presented one aspect, such as the background information, then the other partner would not get credit. I think it should be explicitly stated that each person needs to present everything because I was under the impression that as long as one partner presented it, we would both get credit.

36. Other comments:
I recommend this class to anyone wanting to learn more about leadership!
Great and unique course, but I feel like it was too easy during the first half of the semester and too crazy and crammed during the second half.
This is by far my favorite class in UH. I suggest this should be open to not only to Honor students but to others as well. This class is very beneficial for everyone.
I had an enjoyable time and grateful for being a part of this class.
loved it

10. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
The small class sized helped produce a good learning environment. Instructor is an excellent public speaker. Even though the duration of the class was 2.5 hours, the instructor kept the class interesting. This class improved my writing and speaking abilities.
Small class sizes. Clear progression from Theory to Application. Freedom to choose your own topic.
I found it helpful how Kiana accommodated various learning styles. We learned how to perform scholarly research, taught lessons to the class, participated in fun activities, and even got to observe peer mentors.
What I found most valuable was that we reviewed the reading material the following class after it had been assigned. This allowed students to ask questions and enabled class discussion.
The overall subject of the course, peer mentoring and leadership, equipped me with skills that I can use beyond my academic career. The skills learned can be used in any relationship, may it be with a friend or an employee. All in all, this class made me a better communicator and leader.
I enjoyed all of the presentations we had to do in class because it allowed me to really study my topic in order to effectively present it to my classmates. I thought it was great that we all got to learn the basics from Kiana and throughout the rest of the semester, we taught each other various aspects of peer mentoring.
11. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
Some of the class time was spent on talking about things that were not applicable to this class, excluding small chat (which is needed to lighten up the class from time to time). For example, talking about the Sophomore Passport to Success or asking our input about the other classes on campus could have been done at another time.
What I found least valuable was that there wasn't any actual peer mentoring or volunteer mentoring incorporated into the curriculum nor was any credit offered for students who wanted to go beyond the classroom to mentor.
I did not find anything not valuable or helpful.
Nothing. This is probably my favorite class here at UH thus far.

24. Other comments:
I enjoyed taking this class from this instructor. It was very interesting and I learned helpful leadership techniques that I could apply in the future. However, I felt as if the quality of information that we learned didn't match up to the quantity of time we had for this class. We could have learned more material.
Thank you for being a great teacher! I had a blast in Hon380, and I wish you the best in your future
Point system makes it difficult for students to recover from mistakes made in assignments
Kiana is an overall good instructor. She has reasons for everything and justifies her reasons. Although, it would be nice if there was consistant grading, as some students were marked off for paper formating while others did not get marked off for the same paper formatting error. Perhaps, equal and constant grading. Other than that, she presents her self professionally and is well organized.
This is a great class and I recommend it to everyone interested in becoming a better peer mentor and a better person.
