Bruce is a fantastic teacher. He is reasonable with his assignments, and has a great setup for the class to learn the material. He provides very constructive feedback for the students. I would recommend taking his classes to all other Graduate Students

Bruce Barnes is a great professor with a deep knowlege and passion for conflict resolution. This is my second time taking a course from him, and would surely take more.

The mediation course I took with Professor Barnes was life-changing, and I felt the facilitation class built on top of the principles we learned in the mediation class, (including tools for listening, reframing, inquiring with open-ended questions, legitimizing participants, etc.) I would highly recommend Prof. Barnes' Mediation class, with the facilitation as a follow-up, to other students. I am working on my Project Management skills and I'm finding the Conflict Resolution classes to be a perfect fit to my job. I am able to apply the concepts and techniques to my career and to my personal life. The certificate is applicable to people in all walks of life, and in myriad fields. Taking Project Management, for example, it applies to construction, banking, software development, energy, anything that requires coordination of efforts between people. This (conflict resolution) is a very valuable program of study, which teaches tools that can be applied to a variety of fields/industries.

Mr Barnes knows alot about the topics and subject and it's obvious he cares alot about his students and learning.

I enjoyed the talking circles and getting to hear what other people were learning or writing about. I really enjoyed hearing people's ideas on certain topics and people of different cultures look at things.

Great professor, very personable and teaches a fun class!

Should be more specific on requirements on papers, also help students more with paper if finished prior to due date, and spend quality time grading papers for even grading.

It was an interesting class. It was hard to go through mock trial when people were not interested in do them. Mock run were great until toward when everyone just wanted to leave class and didn't take it seriously. Directions to the papers need to be more clear and concise. Paper 1 stated to list some of the conflicts going on. It did not mention to use the vocabulary.

Dr. Barnes is enthusiastic and definitely and experienced mediator an professor.

Making the assignments clearer is very important. The criteria for the journals was not clear and grades suffered because there was not a good understanding on what the grading was on. Some things were taught on the day the journal was due and points were reduced because those subjects were not in the journal. There just needs to be more organization in the criteria of the journals and guidelines about what the professor wants in the journal.

Sharing experiences with my classmates and learning about their perspectives, especially the international students

The exposure to the ways that different cultures deal with conflict, very interesting and eye opening.

The comparative videos of different cultures provided us a live demonstration of what could be expected in different scenarios.

Understanding different cultures' mediation techniques definitely provided me with the knowledge that there are other methods to resolving conflict that can bring about win-win outcomes for parties involved.

This course is very much concern with cultural components of the society. It is really a kind of valuable perspective for a person who tries to solve the conflict in his or her society.

Prof Barnes.. such a character (in a good way). Very enthusiastic about what he does and tells great stories that have to do with the material.

I will remember this course by from the diversity of my classmates and their perspectives on different cultural conflicts around the world.

This course is of course very much relevant for my country where we are having much cultural within the society.So this course really made me different and it will help me to solve the conflicts which I face in my country in the future. I hope that I would be able to assist me in the future. So I would be able to remember this course forever in my life.

Mock mediations

It made me question my assumptions and learn a new way of solving problems.

The most valuable was the simulations. Close and the next most valuable was the readings in two books. Alongside the book readings was the manual. All very valuable.

The real scenarios we would do in class were benifical for a further understanding of the material.

Hands on learning. Simulations.

It deepened my understanding of mediation. I enjoyed taking this course with a diverse group of students who brought their unique backgrounds and experiences to class each day.

Actual practicing of mediation on a weekly basis. Practicing helped me to hone my skills.

The course was practical. I learned a lot through practice sessions.

It was helpful to go over the nuts and bolts of mediator skills such as reframing, active listening,summarizing, etc.

Journals.

Maybe some of the explanations got a little long and complicated.

Nothing, I really enjoyed the course

Nothing.

I felt like it became somewhat redundant by the end of the course. However, repetition built up my skill-set and I can see why Prof. Barnes wanted to give us so many opportunities to try our mediation skills.

I find everything I learned were valuable.

Since I could not get a lot of simulation experience during the class, it seemed too early to evaluate myself about my mediation skills in Journal 3. In addition, the evaluation criteria for Journal 3 seemed somewhat redundant.

Excellent instructor - however, he should be more organized and accurate in his preparation in terms of book selection and written syllabus. The errors and inconsistencies in his syllibi (I had 3 versions over time) were confusing, especially when it was time to do assignments.

He is a great guy. I would definitely take another class from him. Prof. Barnes is one of the best professors in the entire university.

On the whole Prof Barnes is an incredible teacher of mediation. He is enthusiastic and very passionate about the subject matter and from start to finish he spreads his enthusiasm to his students. Also as a mediator he has been in the trenches so to speak and has a plethora of knowledge to share. His assignments were difficult, but they were very good at helping to reinforce what we were learning in class. He never gives busy work. All his assignments and exercises help students deepen their understanding of the subject matter. The in class mediation sessions really helped me understand how to utilize mediation in a practical setting â?? something I have not experienced in many other classes. During all of the sessions Prof Barnes would walk around to each session observing the procedures, give advice ,and help the mediators with the process. After the mediation sessions had concluded Prof Barnes would go over what he had observed and he would also open the floor for discussion and student incite. Prof Barnes is incredibly respectful and open to students inside and outside of class. In class he always encourages discussion from students and he is always open to new interpretations and ideas. Outside of class, he makes himself available in any way that he can to assist students. For example, I was involved in a mediation situation between two sisters and I was struggling with the process. Prof Barnes went above and beyond to make himself available to me and offered to assist me in anyway that he could. Prof Barnes is a wonderful teacher and I have received more out of his class then most of my other masters classes put together. I would encourage any student who is interested in mediation to take Prof Barnes, he will defiantly make it worth your time and effort.

The course was given me a better outlook on how peace works and how it can be applied, and I also have a greater understanding of problems in the world. Also, the simulation we did performed with the terrorist gave me a better insight on the mechanics of peace and conflict resolution. Barnes is an amazing teacher. I love going to this class!

i think the best aspect of the course was the fact that everyones opinions or ideas on a topic were always valued. there were a lot of international students in the class which made it better because of the variety of experiences that everyone has had.I also strongly encourage taking this course because of the teacher. Proffesor Barnes is really fun and into his material. When he is teaching or we are discussing he comes off the "professor pedistal" and we all feel equal. one of the best professors i have had in my 5 years at UH. too bad i met him so late or else i might be majoring in PACE.

The Teacher Bruce Barnes was the most knowledgeable Professor I have ever had at UH. He really knew his stuff about culture conflicts around the world. Professor Barnes has encouraged me back into graduating and being more serious about college.

I love the interaction that we get in the course and the fact that we get to know all of our classmates pretty well. Our hands on, simulated mediations really do teach you a lot about the process.

disorganization; low level of challenge

Only the first of four written assignments furthered my understanding of the course material. I didn't really learn much from the others and feel they took more time to complete than was worth the learning possibilities they provided me.

I think that a Mediation course should be entirely hands on. I understand that we need to know the knowlege of the theories behind it, and think that, in that case, we should be tested on these particular theories, even participate in the separate theori

Pace was a little too slow

I saw the videos that he played at the class before, and I thought it is useless to see them again. However, other people in the class have not see them, and I understand why Bruce was playing them.
