First of all, this class went from 5:30 til 8 pm at night-- a bad time for a heavy, scrupulous and potentially boring subject. And even more pressure and importance to have an upbeat teacher. Perkins wasn't an enthusiastic type. He was very calm and I think that's why everyone was so quiet all the time. He was actually a stand-in for Kuhio, the creator of the class, due to a last minute situation. I didn't feel like he cared about us because we were going off to do reading that was very difficult to understand from the beginning. The book was quite too wordy with too much law jargon called "The Law of Occupation" by Eval Benevenisti. First off, the class was in a very dimlit room with buzzing fluorescent lights, which gave me a headache and eye strains every class and didn't help Perkins. Basically I think Perkins was blasé and standoffish. A lot of us struggled to understand the material. He could have engaged the class in participating in active learning better by utilizing more effective methods and exercises to mobilize class discussion. Instead he just very blasé, with lots of awkward silences... But who cares... the students including myself were not comfortable with the material so how could that help us to speak up? Perkins was a nice guy however, I just think that we had to ask too many questions as students, and we're left wondering a little too often. Also, aa stand in teacher should still try to teach the material and enhance understanding effectively.

The readings were very long and complicated, sometimes having to read 50 pages for an assignment and then having a quiz on all of it. How am I supposed to remember things from 50 pages of reading? The readings were very dense and not very interesting, even after reading it 3 or 4 times I still didn't understand. The lectures in class were helpful in understanding
Eye opening course which taught me many things about the laws of occupation and gave me a new outlook on the current state of the world. Professor Umi did a fantastic job, especially given the timeframe in which he to prepare for the class

22. How did the instructor show concern for students?
This is an online class and I feel I understand what he was teaching us in politics. He is always available, especially through email and get back to us as soon as possible.
He answered any questions or concerns if the students brought them to his attention. He pushed back a due date on an essay because students were struggling with it.
Takes his time in providing feedback on essays; that way it isn't rushed or generic advice.
23. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I have no dislike, I understood what I had to do and that all that mattered.
I don't feel like I got much engagement throughout the course. The whole semester was, "Read the chapter and write a summary." I like how there's more freedom with this online course but it just feels like nothing much happened. We all posted in a discussion board but there really wasn't any back-and-forth conversation among peers. Lastly, an 8-10 page paper was thrown at us and there wasn't really any guidelines on what to write about. Even with a specific topic I have trouble writing 5 pages.
It was taught well. He made powerpoint presentations to aid learning.
I really liked how there was a response to each chapter - it wasn't just a series of questions asked or a summary needed, it was our opinion about what we read and what we took away from it. Especially as it was an online class, being able to see other student's responses was valuable because often students would touch on different points or highlight how it related to their life.

Thank Mr. Perkins for sharing your knowledge with me and helping me understand about politics and our government.
25. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Yes I would recommend Mr. Perkins class, He's a very excellent teacher!!!
I would recommend him if the student is fine with the ease of reading a chapter and writing 2 short paragraphs a week. However, not much feedback may be received from him unless they email him directly.
Yes. He gives you all the tools needed to succeed. It is a matter of using them yourself.

He offers outside time to help students with papers. He makes sure students know his office hours and even takes time in class to go over assignments.
Mark Perkins is a very good listener and he encourages us to think critically and to achieve our highest potential.
Being that I suffered from a health condition this semester, Mark Perkins was understanding and allowed me to make up participation points by posting my reaction to the material we were reading at the time.

I liked how involved he made the students. We all got to say what we thought about something and it was okay to do so.
I really like how much knowledge Mark Perkins brings to the course.
I loved the fact that he took the time to get in touch with guest speakers and invited them to speak to our class so that we could get a better understanding of the material that we were studying at the time.

Mark could have used outlines to help us complete projects, than to just "do a paper"

He is very knowledgeable and is willing to share what he knows with others.
He is a very nice person.
He is a very understanding and flexible teacher who tries to accommodate all the students. He is very quick to respond to emails in a timely manner and is VERY knowledgable when it comes to past & present issues in Hawai'i
he gave me some revealative ideas, brain stimulation.
I enjoyed his knowledge of this Political Science topic.

Yes! He really knows the history of Hawaii and I'd suggest him to any student who is interested in that area of study!
