17. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?

It is enjoyable for students to create their own learning environment, however, sometimes, for paper writing especially, it is difficult if there are no guidelines to follow.

Give students the option of working on a "real" or "virtual" project.

The deliverable my group & I struggled with the most, in terms of clarity, was the fiscal discussion for our project's budget/management. Maybe a further clarification or expectation for this deliverable would be helpful. A discussion on the Laulima forum about how projects are generally funded is another approach.

18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?

He is quite flexible. He really wants his students to practice self directed learning. He is a good encourager. He has a sense of humor.

I really liked Professor Casken's accessibility and willingness to assist.

Gave good feedback.

He is a very supportive, intelligent, & passionate instructor. He provides a liberal approach so that students can feel comfortable sharing their opinions. He is very fair in grading & upfront about expectations. Whenever assignment descriptions were posted late or backed-up, he adjusted due dates accordingly to avoid stress for the students.

20. What did you like most about your online course experience?

The benefit of online courses is flexibility. I enjoy being able to address schoolwork when and where I care to.

Working on my own time.

Working in a team. Like working in groups and incorporating others knowledge and experiences.

I enjoyed the general flexibility of having an online course. I think this particular course & required assignments fit well with the online format. Dr. Casken was an effective communicator via email & always welcomed phone calls & face-to-face meetings. I also liked that there was a combination of individual & group work, which allowed balance & fairness.

21. What did you like least about your online course experience?

I miss the face to face interactions with other students, but mostly I miss the interaction with my professors. Email as a primary form of communication (as opposed to secondary) is my least favorite way to meet/work with people.

Difficult doing group projects because we do not know everyone in the class and it's difficult to meet when there is not an already set meeting schedule.

Nothing. I think the online format is appropriate for this course.

22. Other comments:

Unfortunately, I wasn't as pleased with my group in this class as I was in 609. I felt that the communication was fairly poor, ideas were not exchanged in a timely manner and the whole thing was just never really cohesive (different people, different ideas about how things should be done) It seems that some just naturally end up doing more than others. But that is the luck of the draw and in many ways, just like life. Overall, I enjoyed this class.

Group work. I enjoyed working with others. It was extremely helpful to work with others who were familiar with the process and who had contacts in the community. Made the process effortless.

The content and learning about legislative processes.

I find mandatory group work to be frustrating, yet enriching! In the real world, one's ability to communicate effectively and work well with others are characteristics that must be developed as an APRN.

Having to research a legislative idea and interview stakeholders and government officials, working collaboratively in a large group

The project brought me into the political arena in a new way by looking at what it actually takes to get legislation changed or implemented.

The group project was extremely valuable.

THe extra readings Casken gave us to read if we were interested.

The requirement to meet with legislators and stakeholder. It forced us to start a dialogue about real issues related to policy.

Absolutely loved the virtual project --thought it was a wonderful vehicle to take us through the actual steps of the legislative process --super, super appreciated that, because I didn't know much about it, but now I am stoked --We can spark change, we have the power, it really is a relatively simple system, and it doesn't take a bunch of money, it just takes the willingness to work together and push for what is right manned with the proper research.

11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?

Individual assignments. I appreciate policy, but many of the aspects of policy are just to complicated for me to even begin to figure out- especially the finance part. I would rather write on an aspect of policy rather than create my own solution.

I did not enjoy the group projects.The group size was too big and only 4 of us really worked on the material.Communicating with members especially when I live on a neighbor island was extremely difficult.There should be some accountability for those who pass this class on other people's work.

Too much people in one group. One group member did NOTHING throughout the semester in group work. Which really angered me and other members in the group. They thought they could just stand by and watch the assignment being turned in. The only responses they gave through email was "sounds great to me". I mean seriously, this is a MASTERs program! I'm just mad that nobody has said anything to that person except me.

the text books--could have read copies of selected chapters without getting the entire book(s)

Some of the reading material was least valuable to me.

I like the 24/7 availability. It allows students to access the system and coursework according to their own schedules. Really, the learning never stops! It is also nice to read other student papers, because I believe that learning should be shared. I learn a great deal from my classmates because they come with such a rich, diverse backgrounds.

At first, I wasn't sure which Laulima links we were responsible for checking. We only used a few features. I would recommend the instructor to "cleanup" the sidebar and get rid of the links that will not be used.

Being on an outer island I felt out of touch with the political scene and politicians. It is also very difficult to be a part of a group when it is an online course and takes more time to communicate. The online meeting was an improvement but still difficult as we communicated via typing and with several members it became rather disjointed at times. Did not flow smoothly.

I missed in class discussions.

Lack of face to face interaction and discussion

The impersonal nature. It was very challenging to work with a group of seven other people without ANY face-to-face communication. My ideal group would involve some face to face interaction, and majority electronic communication.

I feel that the online courses provide less value for the money. I paid a large tuition and engaged in mostly self-directed instruction. In general, more teaching resources such as lectures, links and active discussions would make online classes more worth the price.

Designing a project that will help with disease prevention.

The "field work" for the virtual health promotion project was the most valuable. We were able to talk to a wide range of community stakeholders to understand their concerns. It was also helpful that Dr. Casken was flexible with deadlines and found it more important for us to have positive experiences interacting with members of the community, rather than trying to meet the deadlines.

Lots of computer and email problems this semester. I hope these are worked out in future. The instructor allowed us to be open of our ideas into creating interesting health care promotion and disease prevention programs. I loved the class in that it allowed us to free our minds and develop professionally. Allowing us to create our papers and projects in the ways we intend to be, is a big deal in master's programs to allow us to be autonomous.

Most value aspects of the course is the group project. It was interesting to observe the communication styles in our group dynamics via phone and internet. Learned a lot. Also, being challenged with communicating with and following up with individuals from the community.

Teamwork on group projects and getting to know others

Reaction paper deliverables, epi project, and health promotion project. The amount of drafts were appropriate. I really liked the deliverables because it allowed you to express your views and it wasn't like he was giving us a question to get the same answer from everyone.

The few meetings I had with John really energized me about my project. With any online course, the material is hung out to dry, and the students must simply rely on textbooks and the internet to learn. John is a very passionate person, and I probably would have really enjoyed hearing his lectures. It's too bad really.

I liked the way my group was able to come together and be one in our class project. I was lucky to have a great bunch of groupmates who were compliant and enthusiastic in contributing to the group.

The assignments were good and made me think about my opinions on important matters, and made me realize where I lacked knowledge. That made it easier to go out and learn more about issues that I was not educated on. Dr. Casken's mini lectures on the Word documents were enjoyable and informative. He is a very good teacher.

The textbook -- we never used it!

reaction papers. I did not receive any feedback from them, so never knew if I was on the right track.

Online design. Again, students must teach themselves. This can relieve faculty of teaching responsibilities, but it leaves students in the dark. We suddenly have to motivate ourselves, and figure out what is important and what this subject is about alone. Online courses are not progress, they've taken the fun, appeal, and meaning out of a university. UH is trying to be lecture free it seems.

As always, online classes are tough. I really wish I could have learned more from Dr. Casken b/c I know he has a wealth of knowledge and experience. I would say that the course could have been more structured, ie, less self-instruction and more instruction from the instructor.

A little more structure in the learning part -- more (targeted, not necessarily lengthy) reading, current news articles, etc.

I thought there was going to be a community component to this class. was disappointed to learn that there was not. I never even touched the book--total waste of my money.

Improve punctuality of feedback. For 1st feedback, we got after we wrote our 2nd paper. No feedback for 2nd and 3rd and the drafts. We don't know what we need to fix and correct because we have an idea, but it may not be what the instructor is looking for.

Lecture, drop the online stuff. Distance people can watch on TV.

I would have enjoyed learning about a greater number of topics. I am not necessarily saying I want more workload....well maybe I am. Everything I learned from Dr. Casken was great, but I really wanted more! So for question 17, when I disagreed that the course load was reasonable, it is because I wanted a little more depth.

19. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?

He is very fair, communicates well and genuinely cares about the progress and learning of his students. This made it a pleasurable class to be in.

Flexible, effectively communicates in a punctual manner, thoughtful feedback on assignments, very open and considerate.

I appreciated his keen sense of humor. I wish I would've heard more of it.

Enthusiasm about health and his views and thoughts about the topics.

During those couple short meetings, I got feedback on my project. Turned out John loved my project, and my group members didn't even know it, because they never get to see John.

It seemed like the instructor personlized his response to my written work. He reflected on my work and infused a bit of his own. His comments were specific and he didn't make you sound stupid. Writing about commplex subjects in one or two pages is difficult. For some reason, the instructor made you do it well.

He is a very nice person, and I can tell he really enjoys teaching and he likes students. I have found this to be the exception, as many professors teach because they have to. Dr. Casken is genuine and enthusiastic about public health nursing, and it makes me more excited about learning. He has a lot of knowledge and ties in the big picture with what he teaches. I liked having him as a teacher a lot.

Allowed us to participate in a forum that resulted in awesome group dynamics and learning how to communicate effectively to get the job done efficiently.

It is hard to answer that, as I feel like I took the course on the moon. The content was interesting, but I need more, I need interaction. That is what I pay for, interaction with an expert in an open forum.

Flexibility is the only advantage I can think of. Honestly I don't like online classes. I suppose you could tell that from my other answers. his commentaries

going to the legislature and meeting with reps was great - i'm glad casken made us do that. however, the assignment of the "virtual bill" seemed redundant and was confusing. i would rather have followed a real, current bill from start to finish instead of having to make up my own. casken gave good, thoughtful feedback on assignments.

I enjoyed doing the reaction papers. These invoked the most thought. I also liked that the papers should be short, concise.

The legis. group project. Meeting political individuals and visiting the Capitol. I also enjoyed the book "Political Paradox."

Meeting with and conversating with legislators to gain a better understanding of the law-making process.

The requirement to actually attend a meeting with a legislator was valuable.

Dr. Casken helps me to THINK!!!

Most valuable aspects included meeting with a legislature, observing the legislative process, and the textbooks were great!

open ended writing commentary assignments that allowed for personal opinions instead of research reporting. Ability to do hands on learning about legislative issues in the real world. Opportunity to re evaluate concepts with a new focus.

Dr. Casken was incredibly supportive and answered questions promptly. I enjoyed the course, and would easily take another course from him.

The exposure to the implications of political involvement as it impacts the profession of nursing was foundationally shifting for me. The course 'supported' me embarking into a foreign arena for this I shall be forever grateful. It challenged me to broaden my 'world view' of nursing yet again! :)

the book readings - this course could have utilized current policy issues

Communication was not always good for this course and I wish we could have had some way of interacting online with our classmates more - it was a pretty lonely online course.

The virtual project was difficult to get into. Perhaps asking students to select a bill of interest and follow it through the process would have been better. After I chose a topic for my project, I found it didn't really interest me. Nothing more difficult than doing something that doesn't get you fired up.

Keeping track of the hours, but I do see the relevance of it.

General response papers on topics. The reading was interesting, but usually only the instructor responded to commentary. Minimal exchange with classmates.

I don't really understand where there was any teaching.

Lack of interaction with other students in some kind of forum setting/online discussion would have been nice. I would prefer to have a list of other students and contacts numbers in order to interact on email and share information related to the course, etc.

Group work is always a challenge especially when you encounter a 'weak link and I find this very time consuming and frustrating.

Use more of laulima's tools to make the class more interactive - maybe some discussions or sharing of ideas... all we did was post assignments on it. Also, a clearer outline of the virtual legislation assignment, as well as "how a bill becomes a law in Hawaii" or equipping us with some tools to get started on that path would be helpful.

Perhaps do more reaction papers. These were the most interesting part of class. We could have done more of them. I learned the most from doing these.

Due to the cyber-bridge, I am unable to objectively stated how the instructor would be in the presence of the student. However, I can say that through observation of his responses and emails, he does appear very respectful and energetic. Improvement, I do not have any suggestions.

keep in mind that not all students have a background in health policy and that topic need to be introduced in a way so that these students can understand.

Have it be an in-person class instead of online. The online aspect takes away from the discussion portion and decreases interest and motivation to cultivate our thoughts and ideas to share with the class.

A lot of frustration was from vague assignments which confused a lot of people. The forums in Laulima is horrible and the discussion section should be utilized for easier reading and posting. An additional source of frustration would be from unanswered emails.

I would suggest posting commentaries at least 2 weeks in advance of due date.

arrange for some discussion over the internet to allow engagement between students. This is especially helpful if you are outer island, and don't get direct contact with either the insructor or other students.

19. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?

Casken is clearly very passionate and cares about his students. I liked that he encouraged us to questions ourselves, our ideas, and our assumptions. He likes projects and readings to be "open- ended" but sometimes this can be very frustrating for us students.

Seems very kind and enthusiastic about teaching. He sends us tidbits of what occurs in govt/the world. This helps to bring home the idea of how general/basic health care can and should be.

His feedback allowed me to improve in my writing and perception of events.

Flexible approach, willing to give feedback, focus more on understanding ideas than technical assignments, generally responsive to emails.

The instructor's interest in policy is contagious and encouraging.

Willingness to listen to other's points of view.

Dr. Casken puts students at ease. Reading his views/commentaries were extremely helpful.
