Learning the different schools of mediation and being able to identify the differences. Learning how to handle difficult people.

Stories from Lou about real cases.

I found the videos of actual mediations to be very helpful. Mediation is such an abstract concept since I haven't been in one. Being able to see what one looks like helped me formulate an idea of what a session that I execute would look like. I also enjoyed the hypothetical scenarios that we worked on in class.

I am glad that I have taken this course as one of my elective. I could learned a lot of techniques and ways of handling various situation and people which are definite to encounter in our lives. Professor Lou was very serious about his class and did not waste even a minute. He made the best use of the time and gave us his best. I am so thankful to him and wish him good luck in his career.

17. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?

N/A

the syllabus was very confusing and bulky. It needs a redesign put homework off in the right column so it is easier to spot.

The course is slightly fragmented the readings we sometimes incorporated but I would have liked a little more exploration, elaboration, reference to the texts in class.

None

Lou Chang is a pleasant man, however his speech pace is very slow which makes it hard to pay attention. The lecture material is pertinent, it's just delivered painfully slow.

This class is very difficult to do in 6 weeks. I think however the lectures would have benefited from class interaction (having us think out concepts using concrete scenarios).

40. What changes would you make in the readings?

None

Stronger link between reading and class discussion. I kind of felt like we jumped around a little.

Incorperate the readings into the class discussions a little more.

This class was really helpful and interesting to me. The only comments I would have is to work on the "Great Questions" assignment in class since a lot of students were confused about it. Also, I know I'm doing well in the class, but I really haven't heard anything about my grade the whole semester. I don't look at this as a bad thing personally; I feel it allows me to focus on the material rather than my grade. Other students may feel confused though. I love all of the activities that we do and the videos that we watch. Lou is a wise sage!

not sure where I stand in this course more clarity is needed on assignment expectations

A little unclear on actual grades because no grades are given on assignments.

This class is great. I was able to apply things learned in this class to certain situations in my life and they actually helped, especially in dealing with relationships and dealing with difficult people. I would definitely recommend this class and Lou Chang to other students! Thanks!

May help to remind students when assignments are due rather than just rely on everyone to keep up to date with the syllabus. And more clear assignment descriptions. Other than that, great class! Loved the role-play scenarios!

I would suggest that the organization of folders on laulima follow a chronological criteria.

Professor Chang really invited us to explore and was very open to our own individual discoveries and inquiries. This is a kind of learning environment where I really thrive and I appreciated Chang's passion and knowledge of his craft of mediation.

in this course, i expect that i can learn technical skill in all mediation steps, but, i found that time constrain and learning process have blocked me to get skills as my expectation

No Saturday deadlines for homework. Due to some people's work and school schedules, such requirements greatly conflict with a student's weekend.

I think that we spent a little too much time discussing cross-cultural mediation without going deep enough to justify the time spent. I would have either liked to go deeper or to have moved on to learning more skills of mediation.

More interaction with classmates

when he asked me to read articles, i hope we can explore the reading in classroom, but often he explain something different with the reading assignment (probably i am wrong)

The lectures should be or activity based.

I think more role play opportunities would have been useful. A few of the cross-cultural lectures felt a bit repetitive and I also felt like with these same lectures there was something that Professor Chang wanted us to understand but for some reason couldn't be explicit about it.

The materials prepared by the teacher are all interesting. I think he should choose for us just be more determinant. We sometimes spend a little time decide what we want to learn, I think all of them are good, just making a decision for us is all right.

38. What changes would you make in the readings?

I think that the readings could have been more organized.

Sometimes the readings were a bit extensive. They were always relative but it was challenging at times to get them all done before the next class.

Some of the readings felt a bit repetitive. But I do not know enough about mediation to know if there are better readings out there.

39. Other comments:

I think that although the journals can be useful for us to organize our thoughts they can be rather tedious for a graduate level class. It would be better to assign journals for every other week or for readings that the instructor feels the students may find difficult. Submitting journals became less of a tool for understanding the material and more of a burden towards the end of the semester.

The weekly journal entry got to be tedious after a while. I would suggest capping it at 5-7 journal entries throughout the semester, and request that students pick a particularly inspirational week to reflect on. Also, more fishbowl mediation exercises would have been great. Lastly, the syllabus was confusing because it was too detailed (i.e. it included info about the plan for the class that we didn't really need to know). I would suggest only putting info about the upcoming class that pertains to what students need to do to prepare for it before that class (other than doing the readings).

The syllabus was a little difficult to follow.

Do not make students turn in homework on Saturday.

Journaling every week got to be very tedious. Is it necessary? Maybe every other week or four times in the semester hand in one long journal. Is it necessary to comment on every reading and every exercise? It felt a bit forced sometimes.

There can be more role plays in the future. I think we've done enough for this semester and the time is limited. But maybe in the future class, more role plays can be done. Thank you very much for this semester's class. I really appreciate it.

All the course supplements, the book and role plays were awesome. Mr. Chang was was great. He invited the class to a talk at The Supreme court conference room to meet one of the top mediators in the country, gain experience and valuable information that we will not only utilize in our careers but in our personal, intimate and professional life's as well. I wish there were a continual upper level class I would take it...well done Mr. Lou Chang it is not often you meet a professor that cares about the students equally, enjoy their job and is very knowledgeable in their field.

Watching videos of different styles of mediators demonstrated that there is no clear-cut definite way to handle a mediation. I like that flexibility.

19. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?

Louis Chang is open to questions via internet or phone calls. He has always been most pleasant and guided me on course whether it be email, comprehension or on a personal development concerns, Mr. Chang replied quickly allowing me and others to not miss a beat.

He gives you points of view from EVERY BODY. Example...each point of view will be from six different people in a supplement or article and som would be the same and we will have the book saying the same thing.lol

Everything was pretty much useful.

The course reading seemed a little redundant because the lectures pretty much covered it all already. Also the organization of Laulima was a pain to sort through at the beginning.

EXCELLENT!!!! he allowed students to have a opinion. Challenged us to think. Didn't get upset if we we gave a wrong answer,simple allowed student to explain why or how they came to that conclusion. Educational and useful course

The course seemed a bit short on time (number of weeks).

The amount of work I had to do this session compared to the last session class made this course seemed a lot longer than it really was. I'm glad I took this in six weeks but it may have been interesting for the full semester.
