| Janine always comes to students individually and has a private conversation with them if she feels that there is a problem. If she wants us to make certain revisions to our essays, she tells us what they are and she explains why what we did was wrong. She tries to connect to each student on a personal level. |

assignment if they are struggling, and is also always willing to answer

| In class, Janine is very professional. We have a lot of class discussion and
Janine will allow everyone to voice their opinion and no matter how ludacris
or far out the students opinion, she allows them to not only voice it but
suggests to take a closer look at it. She's very fair and not judgmental at
all. I have personally heard and seen her go to different students and offer
additional suggestions of help in areas they need strengthening in. |

| I especially liked the way that she assigned the readings. She made it so that there was a reasonable amout to read and most of the books that she assigned were really good to read. Although, I really didn't like "They say, I say." I especially didn't like the peer review. I hated printing out 3 copies of each essay, and each was 5-7 pages long. Printing is expensive and not all the students are on the same writing and understanding level, so a good essay might get a bad peer review because some students just don't understand. I also really didn't like wasting the first few weeks getting to know every student's name. I understand that it's good, but I feel like there are better things to focus on. I also didn't like group work. I think that group work is just an excuse for socialization and doesn't really get any work done. |
| Everything is organized, and taught step by step. It is good how the students
are able to have some choice in their subject for the assignment, so that
they actually have some interest in the assignment they are doing. Everything
is straight forward, and time is utilized nicely in class. |
| Janine is an out of the box teacher. She allows for creativity and
expression. The material she had us read and discuss was mainly about
racism, a very real topic that still exists today. She has brought to the
forefront a topic that few dare to look at. It really opens up your eyes to
the world beyond our little island. |

| I like Janine as a person. I think that she feigns happiness, though, and she indulges into certain students too much. She really is nice and she is a good teacher, but the fact that she lets students pretty much run her over isn't that good. She seems as if she is always trying to cover her fear of something. I think that if she voiced her irratiation that she would have more respect from the students that are waiting for her to stand up to the stupid kids trying to run the class. |

| I learned so much from this class and I truly believe that Janine has made me
a better writer. She brought to my attention a style of writing that I had
been doing for many years and helped me correct it. No other teacher caught
it but her. There is something about her class that is engaging and fun.
the one thing i really liked is that she had us get to know the other
classmates. Not only did that bring our class closer together but it's the
only class that a teacher cared enough to make us do. This is the only class
that i have that i know all the students names. Now, i make it a point to
get to know everyone in my other classes. |

| I would recommend Janine to other students, but I would hope that the students taking English 100 will have the ability to understand that it is a college level course and that reading and writing is a necessary skill. I think that if the students were more serious that she would have a superb class. The material is good, and her style is good, but some of the students, at least in my class, don't take her seriously and really bring the class down. |
| Yes I would. A student would definitely learn something from her class, as
things are explained clearly, and organized step by step, so there is a lot
of opportunity to practice, and improve in writing. |
| I would absolutely recommend this class. Janine's class should be the
mandatory English 100 class. She is an excellent teacher. She's fair, has a
sense of humor, has the ability to inspire students and is a true asset to
Windward Community College. I wish she taught other classes. |

I think that dumb students kind of over run her class and make it difficult for the ones that really want to learn. Because I value organization and structure, Janine is a prime example of a well-structured instructor. | Janine helped me when I asked for it and she understands that sometimes life
outside of school can be challenging. |
| By not only answering specific questions but going into detail on how you can better understand your own problems personally and the overlying concepts that need to be learned. |
| She makes the class talk in small groups, then an overall open class discussion so people can experiment sharing their ideas. She really tries and tries until you absolutely understand. |
| She showed concern by asking how we are doing at the beginning of each day. Then based on our feedback, she's able to gage her plan of action for us. I also appreciated the way she opens up the class early for those that needed to talk with her. She never made us feel lesser when we weren't keeping up with the schedule. I appreciated the fact that it wasn't all about deadlines per se, it was all about our learning experience. |

Her teaching style is extremely competent and I enjoyed this class very much. |
| She has a great knack for the English language and implements the laulima service to make the class very hands on interactive even from home. I like the way she encourages peer review and supports us to comment on each others topics and discussions. It was the first time that I wasn't afraid of English 100; it made me excited to experiment putting my thoughts down and articulating my ideas on paper. Gave me a good feeling like my thoughts got more organized. |
| I loved the topics that she shared; the films were eye-openers. She gave us the right kind of motivation to get us researching and taking a stand on our beliefs and values. I enjoyed her reading to us, and that she enjoyed reading for us. Her activities allowed us to get to know each other a little bit more, and to share each others take on the subjects. |

| Janine is a great teacher. I feel she cared and understood her students. For example, when we had a class discussion in the beginning of the semester and everyone explained how we had to read the material over and over again, Janine explained how that re-reading materials is necessary and normal, putting everyone at ease. Janine is great with giving us good feedback and suggestions without making us feel inadequate. Janine also holds to her standards set at the beginning of the year, setting the tone and expectations at an obtainable and reasonable place. Janine also updated her grades in a timely matter which helped me to know where I was in her class and where I needed to improve. |

| Janine made sure she was available for students who needed help with anything or if we did not understand something we had done in class. |
| Janine showed her concerns by meeting with us individually to go over some of our work. |

If none were turned in, points will be taken off and your grade will go down. For tests she would have re-takes for those students who failed any of her tests, for them to have time to re-take it. Also if you felt like you were falling behind in class, she would recommended her students to make an appointment to talk with her to see if there was a way to catch up. |
| She showed it by looking at he student making eye to eye contact. Listening very attentively and every now and then uses correct choices of words to let them know she heard us. She uses different examples if we don't get it the first time. If there isn't enough time she will see us after class by making appointments with each individual. |

| I would recommend my friends and anyone because of her style of teaching. I have Attention Deficit Disorder and learning has been very difficult during this semester. I have been on medication now for 7 1/2 months now. Rearranging my life to fit school hasn't been easy but I managed to get through so far. I have a inner drive to come to class even though I should have stayed home (too sick). I am able to read and comprehend just by looking at a book now. The difficult areas tend to take more of my time but after all of that I learned something. I still have to grasp my current lessons but found that I know I can do it. She made me appreciated my ADD in a positivie way instead of only the negative way. |

4. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?

| I wrote in different mediums so it wasn't just the same old thing. I wrote poems and short stories that broke the mold of what I was used to. New experiences with different people and learning material was also important. I appreciated reading my work without having to worry what people would say. Everyone was really supportive of everybody and that made it fun to come to class. |
| This course helped me to learn time management and efficiency. there was a lot of reading in such short periods of time. With my busy schedule I needed to make sure to set time aside to complete my assignments. |

| She presents the topic as a question. She doesn't lead the discussion, but more just keeps it flowing with our own ideas and interpretation. I don't think she minds going over parts of the reading so that we get more out of than the first time. She's always open for a conference. |

This assures thorough knowledge of everything that is going on. When grading our papers, she writes down suggestions, and always offers constructive criticism. | The work was manageable and she didn't rush through anything she assigned. I was okay with the discussions because I learned way more through them. I wished I put more work into Whitman/Dickinson essay. I'm still not confident in writing a comparison and contrast essay. |
| The way the course is conducted it forces us to do our best. Every project I did, I tried my best because I knew that we would havce to present it to the class. My classmates also served as motivation. Everyone participated, and were very positive and respectful to eachother. The poetry section was very scary at first. when we needed to actually write poems that was the hardest for me. When I was finished I felt the greatest sense of accomplishment. That was a challenge for me. I never had to do anything like that. |

| Janine is extremely passionate about the subject, and is very knowledgable. She uses her past experiences to relate to our struggles. The books she assigned to read were books that she had read in college. Although she has her opinions on certain topics, she is always open to hear what we have to say. She encourages us to think for ourself, and to not be afraid to share ideas. She also grades failry, and explains everything we need to do to get a good grade. |

| Janine Oshiro is truly one of the most caring, talented, and giving teachers I have ever met in my life. She is always there to help, encourage, and motivate the students to give their all and to never give up. I have never seen someone that shows so much love to their students. In any english class peer reviews are present; however, I feel that they should not always be
mandatory. If a student would like the opinions of others, peer reviews are great for them. Some
students don't feel it necessary to be judged by anyone other than the teacher. It helps some not
all, it should be optional. |
