The in class activities were more helpful than studying only with the book. I was able to absorb more information and retain knowledge with what we would go through in class.

-i loved that the class very always interactive. It was never a "sit and listen to the teacher" kind of lesson which forced us to actually practice our Chinese. That was probably the most helpful part of being in class

I would definitely recommend this class just because the professor is one of the best I have encountered. He not only encourages you to try, but he makes learning fun! :) Thank you so very much laoshi!

wonderful teacher that really understands how to communicate with students. He understands that not everyone is on the same level of Chinese and therefore really nails the basics down. I loved this class!

Class group speaking exercises and grammar study.

Small class size & personalized attention

The professor was great in the methods he used to teach. I personally thought that reading the dialogues at the end of each unit as a class was very helpful. In addition, the class activities were closely integrated into what we were learning, thus making it enjoyable and retainable (the knowledge).

Our teacher, he was amazing at getting us excited about the language, and pushed us to take risks. He has an amazing talent for teaching! Also, he even provided time outside of class for extra help for those in need.

8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?

All valuable, I took away something important from every part of this class.

The videos required to watch through the Encounters Chinese program was a bit lacking. If there was a control on the speed, it definitely would have been helpful.

I wished that the book has more practice grammar sections, but Tang Laoshi was great at providing the information we needed.

Amazing teacher. It is a rare gift when someone with so much knowledge and skill can convey that info effectively to students. A pleasure and an honor to be taught by him.

Excellent!

Honestly, if Professor Tschudi was not teaching this course, I probably would not be interested in taking the CHN 205 course next semester. Professor Tschudi is very unique and fun, and he brings this personality into to classroom setting and ultimately formed our class into a family/community.

He is a great, caring teacher who has gone beyond what was expected of him. I haven't had many teachers like him, where he can both lead and be apart of our learning process. I am taking his class next semester for all of these reasons.

The daily practice. The array of exercises.

I loved everything! Chinese is awesome. Tang Laoshi is a great teacher and he really knows his material. I loved his teaching so much I wish he could teach me Chinese till I graduate! The textbook is awesome, the lessons are great, and everything was most valuable.

Our books were really nice.

The one on one session he provides and he takes the time to help students with their work.

I really respect this teacher he manages to keep the entire class focused on learning while keeping the environment very friendly and comfortable. The teacher also demonstrates extensive knowledge on the course material as well as being knowledgeable in any subject brought up in class making me comfortable in learning not only language but social and cultural situations.

Tschudi is a great teacher. He knows how to push students and make them think about subject material. The only complaint I have is the scheduling of exams and assignments. For CIMBA students, our schedules are our lives! If we know about exams in the future then we know how to prepare. I felt a lot of pressure knowing that exams were coming but not exactly when. This is literally my only complaint with this entire course, including the first session in the Fall. I hope other CIMBAs get to benefit from this teacher as we have.

Best course ever! Very difficult but this is a foreign language class! I wish he could teach all Chinese classes! I love Chinese so much after taking this class.

Everything! This class was awesome!

Fundamentals of Chinese

The fun activities! Where we got to "play" different things and everything. Also going through everything together made it easier to remember and learn.

The vast amount of experience and knowledge of not only the language but the culture and the life style of the Chinese.

I think the WAU and the feedback on speaking was the most valuable. It was nice to be able to do a variety of things as opposed to just working out of a book. I also really enjoyed the way the book is set up.

He is very knowledgeable when it comes to Mandarin, and is also willing to help you if you need it.

Tang Lao Shi's enthusiasm amde the class very interesting. And his personal stories and experiences were a great contribution to our learning

He is awesome! Chinese is a hard language to learn and he makes things more easier for us to understand! I hope to use my Chinese in China! That would be awesome! He is helpful and makes sure we learn a lot. He understands our situation of learning Chinese and he tries to make things better for us.

I think he is the perfect teacher for our introductory class. Having English as his first language allows for him to better understand our issues in developing a Chinese base and helping to develop the base.

teaching us the meaning behind common radicals and how to remember them was most helpful. Also, other methods of remembering characters. Everything else in the class was equally helpful to me.

Learning real world instances. Our class focuses on the business aspect of the Chinese language thus learning the subject matter in a different light. The subjects that seem to help us the most are learning how to interact with service personnel. In this class we have learned how to exchange money in China, how to get from point A and B, and even how to book a hotel room. This class is exceptional and is honestly great at teaching us language that will be extremely helpful in real world experience.

The wealth of knowledge Tang Laoshi has in respect to the Chinese culture allowed a more personal and immersed experience that most classrooms fail to offer; having the ability to indeed experience China for the first time at the end of the first semester gave a unique opportunity to to cross check in class room discussions with hands on experience. Without a doubt his knowledge and understanding of understanding was spot on! Although digressions seemed to occur on occasion, it is remarkable how important and memorable those talks became - It was although he had a purpose, a somewhat master plan from the start of the course, disguised within class by theatrics, a cunning humor, and approachable discussions.

Tang Laushi's knowledge of Chinese language and its' application in actual Chinese culture.

I feel that the real world simulations provided by Prof. Tschudi provide us with real life opportunities to practice our speaking. He also provides us with materials that not only challenge us intellectually, but also in a way that supports us in a way so that we still learn.

The most important aspect of this course was the class relationships. Our class took 105-205 together throughout the 2010-2011 year. Having strong student relations were very valuable.

Stephen Tschudi's knowledge of the language and the historical creation of written characters makes a very difficult language enjoyable to learn and enriches study with history and culture. The speaking exercises paired with innovative classroom exercises made it an interactive and engaging environment compared to other languages that I have learned in other academic settings.

I enjoyed the cultural aspects of the course. I also learned to read a lot of Hanzi and vocabulary.

All subjects in this class have been helpful in the learning of Chinese. I wouldn't say that anything has lesser value then others. We have to read novels as well as real world Chinese websites thus helping with all around language learning.

The self created expectations of where I would be by the end of each semester.

The selection of the text book left a lot to be desired. The vocabulary and dialogues were archaic and did not teach the best sets of vocabulary so that I feel prepared for my move to China. Stephen Tschudi added additional course material that enriched the existing class material and went beyond the text to teach additional material that the class requested.

Ordering sentences was too easy.

Although we learned a lot of vocabulary, I felt that we did not use the vocabulary enough to actually use it in conversation. I do not feel that we worked with the spoken language enough. I am slightly worried about going to China; however, I think if we were able to try to speak more using our knowledge base, I would have felt more accomplished. It wasn't until classmates were hanging out that we realized we had actually learned a lot.

Laoshi is AWESOME!!!! This class is great and anyone interested in learning Chinese should take this course with him!

If you want to learn Chinese learn it from him and you learn so much that you won't know how much you've learn till you catch yourself naturally understanding Chinese people speak without knowing you are doing it.

very interactive course. every day is designed to engage different students' strengths which includes most if not all students.

This was a very effective course. The content was constructed efficiently, considering our abroad environment. Using a more casual and comfortable class setting may be more productive.

This was an excellent class and the instructor made learning a challenging language very worthwhile. This class is an excellent part of the CIMBA class curriculum.

I can't say the course wasn't intensive, but 8 credits is a bit much for a language course. I would have liked to take some other courses, but couldn't because of all the credits I had to spend on this course. Also the textbook wasn't very good, but that was hardly the teacher's fault.

Great course and instructor!

I really enjoyed this course, but I feel that there were two classes of students in one class. There were advanced students in the course and practical beginning students in the same course. This made it difficult to actually learn at a good pace. I would recommend that students who are already proficient enough in the language not take 205 because it is disheartening to true beginners; however, if I student really does apply him/herself, it is still possible to get a lot of the class.

Stephen, thank you so much for leading my directed reading this semester! This was INVALUABLE for me. Our readings were directly useful to my dissertation research and, through our work together, I have absorbed SO much more about my research topic than I ever could have on my own. The readings we accomplished are critical sources that will help me for many years down the road. Even more, I gained a stock of vocabulary associated with this topic that has already helped me to skim related works. Probably most significant, though, are the general reading skills that I gained in this directed reading course. Now, when I approach a long, daunting sentence, I have a much better ability to "parse" the text and determine how the grammatical structures are organized than I was able to before. I have absorbed a new range of grammatical patterns that occur frequently in writing and have also added significantly to my character "repertoire." Hearing you read out loud has especially helped me to internalize written grammar patterns and has increased my own ability to read out loud (-- a skill in Chinese that is not straightforward and requires a lot of mental grouping and ability to piece out grammatical organization on the spot). I appreciate your attention to detail and close interest in getting the full meaning out of the text. In some parts of a text that I might have glossed over myself, you took the time to really piece out the entire depth of the meaning. As a part of this process, you offered me a great introduction to the art of translation and gave me basic tools and guidelines to use as I attempt my own translations. Thank you, again, for a great semester! All that I have gained this year (including the fall & spring semester) will travel with me and will significantly benefit my future work with the Chinese language!!
