8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Connecting Chinese Diaspora with cinema and the wide range of ethical issues that were presented in the movies. Very interesting discussions and great lectures.
I thought the video component with the reading was very valuable. All of the articles we read were very interesting and touched on the topic of Chinese diaspora in different ways. I really enjoyed the first 1/2 hour of class where each student talked about a particular part of the movie or reading they enjoyed. It was nice having a class discussion on many different yet interesting parts of the movie/text.
How we discussed about the movies in class, I found that to be very helpful because we are able to analyze the special aspects the movie was actually trying to convey!
I greatly enjoyed viewing the films and discussing their ethical themes from a critical viewpoint. Many of these films I had seen before, but only as entertainment, so it was very enjoyable to study them and engage with their content in this way.
class discussion, listening to other student's opinions and seeing how my peers think.
Quizzes in the beginning of the semester were beneficial as a gauge for our understanding of course material and ensuring that attention is being paid towards critical analysis as the semester progresses. Open, class discussions are interesting as the possibility to several thoughts regarding the week's film and readings can vary and provide differing viewpoints. At this time also is great in clarifying ideas or voicing certain inquiries.
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Nothing. Everything was good.
I really like the readings too because it's very helpful in helping to understand the movies better and the subject covered in class, but maybe we could cut down just a little bit of the reading?
I wish we were able to spend more time discussing our own interpretations of the films; we began each class this way, going around the room and everyone saying something they "discovered," but we always quickly moved on into lecture, which often felt a bit banal if you completed the assigned readings as required. I just wish we had more opportunity to draw connections between our own conclusions.
Movies without English subtitles were difficult to watch for those with interest in the conversations occurring. However this is through no fault of the course but rather whoever created the digital files for viewing online.

Very great class. Enjoyed every part of the course.
Overall a great course. I wish it was also an Oral Core. We did a lot of in class discussion so I thought this would be an OC course. Very happy with this course and will definitely recommend this course to other students.
This course was definitely surprising for me. I came into this class not really knowing what to expect. I learned so much from this course about Chinese Diaspora! Professor Yue really pushed me to think critically about the movies and the subjects of the course! And I'm so glad to have such a knowledgable professor teach the class. A suggestion would be maybe allowing the students express their thoughts more, encourage them to talk about what they think. Although we do get to express our thoughts, I feel that a lot of times we were cut off or you just talked about what we wanted to say so that leaves us speechless and in a panic mode to think of something else to talk about. As for class attendance: if we could have 2 absences versus 1.5, that would be wonderful:)
I would definitely recommend this course to curious students, and I feel that Professor Yue presented the material in a way that encouraged me to learn more about the particular subjects we discussed. The course reader she compiled for this course is extremely comprehensive and was helpful in guiding my focus on the themes throughout the films. The films were entertaining and she is a great teacher.

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
This course focus on writing women in modern China. for instance, gender related cultural practice in Chinese culture. Also, compared traditional and new women's writer with ethics issues by reading their stories.
The critical anaylsis of different interpretations of the reading let me see things from many different sides and angles.
having a variety of different readings from various women writers and having a chance to watch clips really helped in my attaining the information.
The readings she selected were very interesting and made us think about the social problems in China during the 20th century.
I thought that the assigned readings were interesting and the subsequent discussions were very helpful in interpreting and evaluating the social issues. The student-ran discussions also provided us to hear from different classmates.
The mixture of news reports, statistics, and summaries of time periods and historical events in addition to the literary stories were helpful in fleshing out the situation or atmosphere of the time period (at the specific place) we were discussing.
Being introduced to the writings of Chinese women writers of this specified period has enabled me to get aquainted with the social issues that they discuss. This provides an insight that I did not have prior to taking the course.
The most valuable aspect of this course was the vast array of texts we read and movies we watched. Professor Yue astutely categorized the stories to various sub-headings so that the pace of each class was consistent. The participation check box was also helpful because it eliminated many awkward blunders.
literary analysis, historical background
Reading from many different women authors from various perspectives of Chinese culture really deepened my interest in not only women's issues, but societal issues in relationship to culture. Professor Yue used different methods of learning, such as reading and video material, to demonstrate different ethical issues within Chinese culture involving women, and gave me a sense of value for women's issues globally as well.
the literature that was assigned for the course were all interesting and made me think about issues in China.
I really enjoyed the reading material in the course. I also enjoyed discussions in class and having the opportunity to present in class.
11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
nothing
When discussions would end up being just me and maybe one other person and no one else would speak up.
The least valuable aspects of the course I would say was the educational essays we had to read. Some of them were so dense it was hard to understand.
We did not really have time to discuss some of the instructional readings (homosexuality ones); however, they were helpful in giving a context or basis for the readings.
None
I found the topics covered to be relevant to the study.
After the first two weeks, the following classes were student led. I liked this aspect of the class because it made it easier to get discussion and participation points. However, the directions were not clear for the presentations. It would be better if a rubric was presented for future classes. The presentations also were not valuable because, although not often, Professor Yue would interject, leaving out room for other student's thoughts. While I value Professor Yue's thoughts and analysis, by doing this, it didn't leave much room for students to form their own opinions. Professor Yue is a great facilitator, but there are times where she'll rule the discussion and everyone else is silent. Whether this is because no one did their work or because Professor Yue wanted to instill one line of though, I don't know.
when the discussion would move away from course materical and the professor would end up discussing contemporary issues of which she was obviously not knowledgable of ex. science of homosexuality, biological clock and that would become the focus of the discussion instead
Sometimes we spend too much time talking about one topic, and it cuts into our time for other topics. Either way, I still learned a lot and valued everyone's input overall.
the student presentations, sometimes it took too long or we didn't get to cover everything that is important.
None that I can think of.

26. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
This course shows traditinal and new women writers' gender related cultural, including youth culture. Learned ethical issues by reading their writings. This course focus on the more intense issues with Chinese women writers.
I liked the different selections of the readings and the many issues we examined.
I liked how each student was required to choose one lesson and be the presenter for that subject. we each got a chance to lead the class discussion, which forced myself to think in a more critical mindset.
Loved the novel candy!
I enjoyed every readings in the class so far. I like how professor Yue encourages class participation and it is not just a lecture class everyday.
I liked the assigned readings; it really opened up a side of Chinese culture that I didn't know about. The videos that were assigned or shown were very interesting too. Students weren't really pressured into answering questions, which makes it a more comfortable environment.
I like the variation in formats/genres of the information given: literary stories, audiovisual media (interviews, documentaries), news articles, photos.
The class discussions were very interesting. However, we did not get to hear any opinions from half the students. Each student has to give one presentation as part of the course - this is a good thing because it means that they have to say something at least on the day they present, otherwise they would not volunteer any thoughts/ideas during the whole semester. Either they were not prepared because they had not read the material, or they always had nothing to say is not clear, since we all had to sign the attendance/prep sheet for each class.
I liked the open feel of discussions. As I mentioned earlier, Professor Yue is a great facilitator who knows the material well and poses excellent questions for discussion. I also liked how Professor Yue held us accountable for classes we missed. Although at first I thought that Professor Yue was "babying" us and being too strict, in the end I really liked this part. I can't exactly express why, but something about having to email your teacher, "Sorry I can't come to class today because I have a hangover," is way too embarrassing and I'd rather soldier on to class than sent that.
While the course revolved around the central topic of Chinese women's ethical issues, I believe that we learned so much more in the class and broadened our knowledge of women's issues in general (on a global scale).
the discussions on each reading was helpful to break down the main arguments of the author.
I really liked every aspect of the course. I thought that all the readings were relevant to the objective of the course. They helped me to understand the roles and portrayal of women in Chinese society.

28. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I think this course already improve.
Perhaps rely a little less on class discussion since so many do not readily seek to participate in these.
Although we had great class discussions, not all of the students participated in the discussions. In the beginning of the class, we had to sign the attendance sheet as well as if we were prepared. So with this class being more of a discussion class, i felt that when the whole class would participate, it was more fun and helped me to remember more of that specific topic for the day.
The course was overall really good but we had so much reading it was hard to go back and remember the earlier ones we read.
* Maybe more encouragement for students who don't really speak up to say their views.
It would be helpful to summarize important points or emphasize the ethical dilemmas following each discussion. Sometimes the discussions led by students are not particularly stimulating and do not seem to have any overarching points, as the discussions are tailored to the students' specific interests and perspective. Maybe add some movie clips into the class for emphasis or visual purposes, or just add more photos in PPT.
Besides the handful of students who consistently volunteered their opinions for the discussions, the other students should be called upon more often. The idea of signing the attendance/prep sheet is a good one because if someone is not prepared he/she will not be called upon and will not have to be put on the spot. I have been in other classes where in the course requirements it states that attendance and participation will be counted in the grading, but there had been no attendance sheet. At the end of the semester, there are many students who never asked questions or contributed to class discussions, yet some of these non participating students still managed to get "A"s, so was the teacher even paying attention?
This course could be improved by providing a rubric for the presentations and maybe less readings per day. A rubric is needed for the presentations because although one may follow all the guidelines, it is still not "A" material. Clearer guidelines are needed or maybe a difference in grading (i.e. grading from the instructions given to the students and not by teacher expectations). The readings were great; the broad array of subject helped one understand what it meant for Chinese women writing in the 20th century. However, I'd rather concentrate on one or two texts per class rather than blaze through two or three. Although some are short stories that allow for two or three to be done per class period, other stories are 30+ pages and discussing two of those isn't valuable to our understanding.
-- snipped --
Stay on topic within a reasonable amount of time, to avoid pushing back presentations. Also, sticking within the time frame so we don't get out of class a few minutes late every so often, just because some people have other obligations to fulfill after (such as work or other classes).
possibly no student presentations since the teacher should be the most knowledgable person in the classroom, i would feel more comfortable learning from the instructor than other students.

29. Other comments:
I recommend to this course because instructor has good knowledge and skills about women writers with ethical issues.
You are a good Chinese professor, I learned a lot in this semester, thanks. Your point is very strong, I like to your teaching style.
Professor Yue is a great teacher who definitely knows her material and does not need to "prove" it. Her no nonsense, let's do this attitude is enjoyable to be around. I would definitely take a class from her again. However, she's not for everyone. If you're a slacker, don't like to come to class, and need an "A," don't take a class from her. But if you want to be challenged, understand material in a new light, get mind blown every class period, and are willing to put in about 3 hours per class period, then definitely take her. I'm not joking about the 3 hours of studying by the way, you're going to need to put a lot of work into the course. But it's a pleasure.

I would highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to take a challenging, yet insightful class about Women's Studies or Chinese culture.

5. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
It was an invaluable experience to participate in Professor Yue's class on Women Writers. I think this was almost a necessary way for me to be introduced to many of the themes of feminism, nationalism and marginalized literatures in a dialectical way that I would not have been able to achieve with individual research alone. I was also introduced to many authors and scholars in the field. Finally, the class focused on a new set of analytical vocabulary which will serve as a strong foundation for my continuing research.

I have not taken full advantage of opportunities to meet with Professor Yue outside of class. Attendance of the course on women writers has kept me grounded and in dialogue with the professor in discovering a possible term paper topic.

6. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The in-depth discussions really deepened the understanding of the movies and the articles and it allowed for a complex and ethical view of Chinese Diaspora than just the coures work would have given. The fact that the articles also helped explain and deepen the understanding of the films and gave a better understanding of the topics and ideas.
The classtime review of the movies watched helped to gain perspective and understanding of what was watched.
The heavy focus on ethics and the necessity of critical thinking made the class enjoyable. Although I wasn't very vocal, I was learning not only as a student, but as a person as well
The movies
This course focus on Chinese Diaspora and Visual Culture. It broadly refers to the cultural practices and social experiences of diverse Chinese migrations. Also, show that contemporary ethical issues.
I appreciated the class discussions. I felt they definitely helped my understanding of the material and gave me the chance to find out insights that other students had. I really enjoyed the readings on The White Knight, hip-hop culture, and eating in diaspora. The films were also very well chosen.
watching the films and then discussing them broadened my knowledge about diaspora filmmaking as well as the Chinese culture.
The films, powerpoint and essays were all valuable to the course. So were the class discussions.
7. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
There wasn't anything in the course that was not useful but it would have been better if more of the films were available on the internet.
The books.
Nothing.
The Stuart Hall video the first day of class was overwhelming and I had a hard time wrapping my mind around what he had to say. Through discussion and the reading I came understand he was talking about how people, events, ect. were imbued with meaning, that the meaning was constantly contested, and who held power seriously impacted how the meaning was interpreted. However, watching the video all I could think was, "Huh? Say that again in everyday speak."
The course packet wasn't something that I found very helpful in comparison to the films but some handouts would have been helpful.

I think this course is very good and I have learned Chinese Diaspora, such as Chinese immigrants' life style in new countries. I will recommend this course because the instructor has good knowledge of Chinese Diaspora and Visual culture. Also, easy following information of Chinese visual culture and their immigrants life by her lecture class.
This is an engaging class and I would recommend Prof. Yue to my friends. However, I would candidly tell them that if you don't come to class prepared you already lose half the value of the day's lesson. (Not to mention probably kill your participation grade.)
Professor Yue is very well-versed in this material and teaches it in a way that inspires students' interest!

6. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Discussing the stories and essays to get a better understanding of them.
Discussion
Round-table discussions and explanation of cultural aspects of the stories discussed.
The reading assigned to class and they syllabus because she abided by it all the time.
The teacher is very knowledgeable in her field and has a good strong character.
The class discussions
Lectures regarding the topic from the professor, PPT's, detailed syllabus, and handouts made my students/professor.
The issues that we discuseed in the stories were the most valuable to me. I had never taken a women studies course at UH and I'm glad that I took this one. The stories were VERY interesting to me and I enjoyed reading each of them. All issues discussed in the stories and in class were very important and I thought were very valuable.
The felt the discussion was most valuable throughout the semester because it gave students the opportunity to voice their views and/or opinions about the reading assignments.
The readings and class discussions were most valuable because it helped me to understand the topic of the week and to help me on my midterm paper and it will help me on my final paper as well. The discussions were very valuable because one reading I can see multiple perspectives on it.

There wasn't anything in the course that I thought was not valuable. The only thing that I thought was challenging is presenting because I'm not much of a speaker but the presentation helped me to understand and dig deeper into the readings more rather than just looking at it from the surface.

Please offer an alternative to the unbound course reader-- either a bound version or documents available online, or even if the course reader were set up so that individual stories were separate from each other and thus could be stapled as individual documents.
I loved this class!
I rate this class good and not excellent because it lacked in discuss. Yes, every class had discussion, but for me, it was more of a debate where two people are talking over each other to get there point across, and that is not a discussion. Also, the packet was confusing.
This course doesn't just teach us about Chinese women writers but it also teaches us a little about Chinese history in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. I learned things about my own heritage that I didn't know about. I think this is a good class to take if you want to learn about Chinese culture as well as learning about women studies.

8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Great selection of readings
I wish I had more teachers like yue baoming. She is organized and extremely passionate about her work and research. She pushes all students to think outside of the norm and to grow as a student. She is rational and objective with students and is understanding that we all come from different walks especially when talking and writing about Chinese Diaspora for a grade. I highly liked this class and wish more of hers could be taken for my major. Though I have no idea what grade ill end up with , I can honestly say I learned something and was worth the journey.
Professor Yue's class was challenging and interesting because she cared so much about the subject and wanted us to care too.
It helped me analyze myself psychologically and culturally.
The way she synthesized concepts in both the readings and weekly video features was extremely helpful. She explained things well and connected everything perfectly.
The class discussions were great and I learned a lot about the subjects we talked about.
Discussion, and the power points to highlight important information about the films. It was also very helpful to watch clips in class, to refresh our memory of parts of the films.

15. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
the course should have some kind of pre req, maybe for people who have taken chinese history courses or asian studies courses
some of the readings seems a little hypocritical and one sided wich i think may have reflected the media and politics of a time, but maybe some very recent examples of chinese diaspora, like within the last 4 years, would helpt balance that out and make some of the other arguments seem so harsh. but i did learn a lot, and nothing expressed through the readings and movies were false and were neet to explore. Great class
A little less lecturing, and a bit more discussion would be nice.
The discussion-setting is fine, but I think part of the grade relies too heavily on class participation.
I honestly have no suggestions I thought the course was excellent!

21. What changes would you make in the examinations?
nothing, mingbao explained herself at the very beginning that due to the subject matter, writting was the true way of reflection of the knowledge of this class. and the standard true or false testing would not work in this class. and gave fair warning that if writting was not your thing to seek help or drop.
none. I enjoy the take home essay format.
A more definitive guideline as to what she's hoping to read in our essays.
I thought the work load was fair and the exams were challenging and appropriate for the course.
22. Other comments:
class discussions sometimes go astray
i would like to see maybe this class become not only a ethics class but a writting intensive class. this would make more people want to take it and also would help us college students get a W since we were close to the requirnments as it was. like maybe adding a few mini papers about the vast topics in class to get it up to the WI marker.
A great class that I would recommend to others. The films were all well integrated with the readings and the discussions really brought everything together.
Good course, some of the readings challenging but overall learned new concepts and ideas

32. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The professor demonstrated a great example of class discussion. She has led discussions with no wrong or right answer. Everyone was able to join and talk about the topics.
The discussions made me thin a lot. Also, I got a lot of information not only from pofessor, but my classmates.
I liked the stories from the Dooling book the most.
I really liked the discussions and the stories that we read in class because it gave me a better understanding of the topic of Chinese women writers.
I like the way INSTRUCTOR leads the class discussion. Eveything is very clear and a lot of informations for the course. I found lots of interesting books in this class. Thank to my professor's knowledge.
I really enjoyed the readings for this course and the interesting discussions we have every class. I also really enjoyed being able to express and share my own opinions and comments about the readings and relating it to personal/others experiences with my classmates.
The readings.
I enjoyed the class discussions best. I also appreciated the fact that you could mark whether you were prepared or not for class in order to avoid awkward situations.
Class discussions
The discussions among the students from various backgrounds was the most interesting. Everyone had different perspectives on the topics.
The stories. Learning about Chinese culture through it's women.
class discussions helped me understand the material better because different students contribute different ideas
I really liked how the group discussions challenged me to think about personal issues, and issues from different countires and in my own community. I also liked how passionate the teacher was about the subject.

34. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
Fun time!
If there are more information about the authors of stories, it is nice. More films can also help students learn the topic.
This course could be improved by spending more time on historical context of the stories.

Overall Professor Yue's class is very good and interesting. But there is something I would like to say with my instructor to change to improve the class activities. It would be more fun if she can find a way to make all students participate in class dicussion. Make everyone to talk or things like that.
I would like to get to know my classmates a little more in the beginning of the semester. It was interesting to learn about my classmates from the comments and opinions they make during class discussions but if we know each other a little bit more from the beginning, it might make discussions even more engaging in the enthusiastic way.
-- snipped --
Some people talk too much and others not enough. I don't know if anything can be done to fix this though.
The amount of readings assigned could be lessened. Also the readings should be more about ethics.
The midterm and final would be much more interesting to write about if the prompt addressed certain stories rather than the essays. The essays could be extremely complex and confusing so writing about them and clarifying all aspects came with difficulty.
maybe add in some written work on some stories to understand the basic storyline. it may help students understand concepts that you may want them to focus on while they read.

There was nothing that I didn't like. All aspects of the course were clear and helped challenge myself.

Great class Professor! Hope you have great summer! and this class was very intense. Taught me more than women civilization, taught me discipline and responsibility.
Thank you.
I found it to be a very intellectually stimulating course, and I felt it helped me develop my personal ethical perspective.
Professor Yue is a good teacher and very strict. She loves to teach and She cares a lots for her students. We love her very much.
I really enjoyed this course, I am really glad I took this course, I really felt that my professor, Professor Yue is a very powerful person, she speak in a confident way and her voice is very affirmative. I learned a lot from her this course, I would definitely recommend her class to others and I would like to take her classes in the future.
Professor Yue, you say "right?" a lot. It's a little distracting, it's similar to when people say "um" or "like" a lot when they talk.
This course doesn't seem to be much about ethics. The readings seemed to be more about the Chinese culture and sex. It also seemed like there wasn't much discussion about ethics during the course.

-- snipped --
Overall is very good.
Some of the reading materials were hard to understand and comprehend. It made it hard to contribute to class discussion.
The readings were challenging and lengthy. Perhaps if they were shorter I would have been able to focus deeper instead more shallow interpretation.

Watching "Farewell China"
Sometimes the instructor is too strict and rigid when it comes to enforcing rules and making changes to the course. Also there is a strict attendance rule that affects your grade after only 3 absences. Also if you are more than 15 minutes late three times it counts as an absence. The class is two hours and thirty minutes long and 15 minutes is not even 20 percent of the class period, so I do not believe that it should be noted when one is 15 minutes late. However, I do think the instructor is great! She is so knowledgeable about the course content and is very diligent!
I didn't like having to come to class to make up for the holidays even though I understand that I'm getting my money and education's worth by being there. I also didn't always like class discussion because I often felt that the scope of the discussion was limited. There were times that I often wanted to see where our discussion could take us in terms of praxis because I think there is often a problem with discussing social problems, but never actually doing anything about it. I think it's also good for us to discuss ways that we can do something to change the problems we are discussing.
The fact that there are only two assignments for the course, making the pressure to do well on both much higher. It wouldn't be so much of a bother, but worrying about how the professor will grade and what their grading style is like can sometimes put a stopper on creativity and motivation.

24. What changes would you make in the examinations?
-Giving more specific topics for papers -Contributing term exams or quizzes
-- snipped --
None.
I enjoy that they are essays.
-- snipped --
I believe discussions of the exam questions before turning it in, instead of after, would be largely helpful.
no changes

I thought that the examinations were fair. I also liked how the second question of the midterm was open-ended, so that we were able to incorporate any number of the films and/or readings into our answer, yet each person's answer would have been unique. I would keep one open-ended question per exam. The only thing that I would change is perhaps distributing the examinations two weeks prior to the due date so that students have more time to work on them and give really well-thought-out answers. However, I don't really feel that this change is completely necessary since the page requirement for the examinations is doable in a one-week period.

changed my reading habit and increase my critical thinking ability
Varied readings and a strong analysis of the subject matter from a knowledgable professor made for a good class.
I felt the the class discussions were very helpful with understanding the readings in the class.
The diverse readings which all seemed to contribute to eachother
I felt that the assigned readings offered very interesting and intellectually challenging viewpoints not only about China, but also about the ethnical principles of human beings. To me, those readings offered very valuable insight.
The foundation of the course is on discussion and that to me is the most valuable.

The reading assignments really made us think about the issues and helped us to understand a different culture than the one that most of us were raised in.
Class discussion was most valuable for learning others' viewpoints.

I am not sure if the presentations were very useful, but I guess it was good that one person knew the stories better than the others.
author background information, although I understand that in the bigger picture it is important
I think that pretty much all the aspects of the course were valuable. If I had to pick the least valuable aspect, I would choose the student presentations since it is almost like a group presentation anyways. A class discussion led by the teacher probably will work better.
