8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
ALL OF IT!
The articles were the best part of the course. They pertained to current material in the field. I also found that were set up in chronologically effective manner. I would only consider minor alterations to article choice and focus on making changes for this course elsewhere. The movies were probably the second most valuable part of the course. Since most articles analyzed certain media, it seemed rational to let us watch those as well.
Professor Yue brought a lot of valuable insight to the class. I really enjoyed her enthusiasm and perspective on the topics. I also enjoyed when we went around the class and each individual brought their thoughts on the topic.
The lectures and slides from the Professor.
The various readings are really helpful in understanding the concept of Chinese diaspora.
Ethnics and diaspora of Chinese/Chinese American.
I really enjoyed the class discussions. Although I didn't talk a lot, it still helped clarify the concepts portrayed in the film and discussed in the readings.

9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
quizes were less valuable but I understand why we have to take them, to make sure we do the work.
Definitely the lecture format. The ideal of the class is to have a thought provoking analytical conversation about the topic of hand. However, it's not very realistic. This class in particular had some astute students but most were shy and not forthcoming on their observations. Towards the end of the semester the class was better well adjusted to deal with this issue, but not enough. I would suggest two things. 1. Have more smaller group discussions. The ones we had were packed with too many questions and were ineffective. Provide a few simple, but efficient questions that purvey the main topic trying to be taught. It's probably better to randomly number students into groups rather than let them choose. Then of course report back to the entire class afterwards. A lot can be learned this way and students can become much more comfortable with their respective peers as well. 2. Have a TA or someone along those lines post the powerpoints online. Sometimes it's difficult to listen and record at the same time on such a complex subject matter. Cultural studies is a vast and interesting subject that requires deep thought which can be difficult if your trying to write down so much information.
In regards to writing the paper for the exam, it was a little confusing as to what Professor Yue expected for the paper. It did help to have a sample of the paper for other students to use a reference. The powerpoint was a little wordy at times, and went by it too quickly. Sometimes I was too busy writing the content of the powerpoint down to concentrate on what she was saying. I understand that students should not take notes by writing word for word but, everything seems important.
can't think of one.
Some of the quiz questions were too specific; although the reading load was light, remembering precise ideas were difficult (especially if the article was read a few days before the class). It would be helpful to have notes for the quiz.

23. Other comments:
Some of reading articles, particularly those assigned during the first few weeks of class were very complex and technical.
The movies may focus too much on Hon Kong issues. I would like to learn more about Chinese movies from other Chinese society such as Taiwan, Southeast Asia and etc.
I really enjoyed this class a lot, help me think out of the box. I loved all the movies as well. I thought all our class discussions were very interesting. Thank you so much for being a great teacher!
A very interesting course that just needs a bit of fine tuning.

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Learning more about Chinese culture through literature.
The teacher highly recommend student to discuss the reading with each other. During class each student had a great time discussing our assignment with each other.
Class discussion was lively and engaging
Discussion.
I found that the most valuable aspects of this course was that Professor Ming-Bao encouraged everyone to speak about the subject we read for class.
Class discussions were lively and informative
The lectures were very interesting as it allowed us to understand some of the topics that will not be usually covered in a class. I was able to understand the use of ethical issues in literature.
I enjoyed learning about different aspects and issues regarding women in China and focusing on a different topic each week. I appreciate the range of literature we read and analyzed. I also found the study handouts very helpful in preparing for and thinking about class discussions, as well as Professor Yue's powerpoints and background info about the authors, stories, etc.
clear perspective on ethical woman issues from a Chinese perspective in a modern society
Class discussion
I felt that class discussions helped bring many different view points to the material.
She used Chinese history with the readings, having us learn of the events behind the inspiration behind the writers' inspiration
The discussions because it made me think beyond what i would uusually think and hearing other peoples thoughts broadened my own thinking.

The most valuable part of this course was how much of the writing was tied into the current events of the time that they were written during the in class discussion.
The required course materials and writing essays.
discussion in class
By forcing the students to participate in discussions, eventually the students began to engage in very interesting discussions and debates over the material that deepened my understanding of the readings. The reading selections were, for the most part, very good choices.
analysis of Chinese women writers.. to be critical and analytic of writers in the time and place they are writing about or from
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
A lot of reading
Can't really think of anything bad.
Everything in the class seemed to be relevant to the course topic
none.
The least valuable aspect of this class is that we had to buy a book that we only read 4 stories from.
Attendence is too strict. Should allow for excused absences without penalty if doctors note given
Student presentations: I think it would have been better if the class was conducted according to what the professor might have thought it was important to discuss. Sometimes, I thought my peer's questions were not relevant to the readings or the topic.
n/a
None
Sometimes when we were discussing something Yue Ming-Bao would be fishing for a very specific response and when people gave what turned out to be pretty similar answers these were deemed not the answer. This was a bit discouraging because it felt as if the answers provided were close enough to accept and then it was difficult to figure out what to answer with instead.

The instructor was extremely severe about putting students on the spot during discussion. If someone interpreted the reading in a different way that she did, she often made them feel embarrassed about it with her tone and comments.

21. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Discussion
I really enjoy having discussion with the student in the class. We talked about how the story line goes and what other option can also happened.
Definitely class discussions
I liked discussion and the times when we could debate things.
This course give a a better understanding abut Chinese Women's contribution in writing.
I liked that most of the stories we read were short stories because when we read stories that were a few pages more students got involved in the discussion.
Discussing the readings
The selections of the stories were very interesting. Having different topics for each week made the class more open and thorough.
I liked learning and gaining a greater knowledge of Chinese women writers and women in China. I found class discussions engaging, interesting, and thought-provoking.
revolutionary perspectives touched upon by ideas presented within the literature of 20th century Chinese women writers
Professor encouraged students to discuss freely in the class.
I enjoyed many of the stories we read.
I liked the sign in sheet, and the stories were great because I really like Chinese history.

I appreciated the fact that while this course required a lot of reading, and had to be done before class, I found that the amount of assignments for this class and the ability to chose a presentation day early on was very valuable to me, when dealing with other class work.
Learning about the struggles Chinese women went through during that time.
some of the readings were really good
punctuality. always ready for class and to engage in discussion. very prompt

23. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
Less reading to do.
Student should read their assign reading and talk in class.
An extra couple days to write our midterms would have been nice, but not entirely necessary
Maybe if she gave a little more wait time to allow students to speak up occasionally. But usually she did give some time, just a little more might be nice.
Use more short stories that are a few pages and are fictional because usually fiction stories are more interesting to read.
N/A
Maybe having a smaller class will be more effective since it is a literature course that requires a lot of discussion and inputs from students. Although we have made progress, there were at times it was hard to concentrate on the discussions.
Im not sure; I think this course was very well organized and constructed.
I think it is good that in our class we have a lot of discussion, but sometimes I feel that if the professor could show us the main ideas of the readings in the ppt would be better because sometimes I need to take a long time to deeply understand the readings.
more literature by Zhang Ailing. perhaps less focus on the woes of women as presented in the literature, and more focus on the the enlightened frame of mind and intellectual aspects which these women achieve through their literature that set them at balance with their male counterparts.
sometimes women or men were looked as a homogenous group. It may be useful to emphasize the differences between people of the same gender and not clump them into a whole as if all women as one way and all men are a different way.
A better film projector ^^;
I think the school needs to get new books for "Writing Women in Modern China" because my book pretty much fell apart at the seams.

Possibly use a bigger room, or a room with more chairs. The beginning was a little disruptive when students would walk in a little late and then have to walk out and then have to bring in a desk from another class. And then that class would be missing chairs the next period there was a class in that room.
a little less strict regarding attendance and class preparation.
24. Other comments:
Your expectations for the oral presentation were a little unclear, I was marked down for answering a question that was supposed to lead class discussion, but I felt that I was picking up slack where no one was willing/able to respond.
I really appreciated this course. It helped me to open my eyes to the ways that I think. It got me to look at the way I view things more.
It was such a great course!
excellent and highly recommended course
Professor always well prepared for the class. Very clear explanations.
I really like this class because of discussions and the stories were really interesting. This class broadened my views on many things.

It is very important to come prepared to discuss the readings for each class and I don't think I did as well as I'd like in that area.
it sucked sometimes when class would start before the scheduled time. so if I was two minutes early for class.. it was still late cause prof had already started lecturing

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
How we discussed about the movies in class, I found that to be very helpful because we are able to analyze the special aspects the movie was actually trying to convey!
I greatly enjoyed viewing the films and discussing their ethical themes from a critical viewpoint. Many of these films I had seen before, but only as entertainment, so it was very enjoyable to study them and engage with their content in this way.
Connecting Chinese Diaspora with cinema and the wide range of ethical issues that were presented in the movies. Very interesting discussions and great lectures.
I thought the video component with the reading was very valuable. All of the articles we read were very interesting and touched on the topic of Chinese diaspora in different ways. I really enjoyed the first 1/2 hour of class where each student talked about a particular part of the movie or reading they enjoyed. It was nice having a class discussion on many different yet interesting parts of the movie/text.
Quizzes in the beginning of the semester were beneficial as a gauge for our understanding of course material and ensuring that attention is being paid towards critical analysis as the semester progresses. Open, class discussions are interesting as the possibility to several thoughts regarding the week's film and readings can vary and provide differing viewpoints. At this time also is great in clarifying ideas or voicing certain inquiries.
class discussion, listening to other student's opinions and seeing how my peers think.
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I really like the readings too because it's very helpful in helping to understand the movies better and the subject covered in class, but maybe we could cut down just a little bit of the reading?
I wish we were able to spend more time discussing our own interpretations of the films; we began each class this way, going around the room and everyone saying something they "discovered," but we always quickly moved on into lecture, which often felt a bit banal if you completed the assigned readings as required. I just wish we had more opportunity to draw connections between our own conclusions.
Nothing. Everything was good.
Movies without English subtitles were difficult to watch for those with interest in the conversations occurring. However this is through no fault of the course but rather whoever created the digital files for viewing online.

This course was definitely surprising for me. I came into this class not really knowing what to expect. I learned so much from this course about Chinese Diaspora! Professor Yue really pushed me to think critically about the movies and the subjects of the course! And I'm so glad to have such a knowledgable professor teach the class. A suggestion would be maybe allowing the students express their thoughts more, encourage them to talk about what they think. Although we do get to express our thoughts, I feel that a lot of times we were cut off or you just talked about what we wanted to say so that leaves us speechless and in a panic mode to think of something else to talk about. As for class attendance: if we could have 2 absences versus 1.5, that would be wonderful:)
I would definitely recommend this course to curious students, and I feel that Professor Yue presented the material in a way that encouraged me to learn more about the particular subjects we discussed. The course reader she compiled for this course is extremely comprehensive and was helpful in guiding my focus on the themes throughout the films. The films were entertaining and she is a great teacher.
Very great class. Enjoyed every part of the course.
Overall a great course. I wish it was also an Oral Core. We did a lot of in class discussion so I thought this would be an OC course. Very happy with this course and will definitely recommend this course to other students.

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I thought that the assigned readings were interesting and the subsequent discussions were very helpful in interpreting and evaluating the social issues. The student-ran discussions also provided us to hear from different classmates.
The readings she selected were very interesting and made us think about the social problems in China during the 20th century.
This course focus on writing women in modern China. for instance, gender related cultural practice in Chinese culture. Also, compared traditional and new women's writer with ethics issues by reading their stories.
The critical anaylsis of different interpretations of the reading let me see things from many different sides and angles.
having a variety of different readings from various women writers and having a chance to watch clips really helped in my attaining the information.
The most valuable aspect of this course was the vast array of texts we read and movies we watched. Professor Yue astutely categorized the stories to various sub-headings so that the pace of each class was consistent. The participation check box was also helpful because it eliminated many awkward blunders.
The mixture of news reports, statistics, and summaries of time periods and historical events in addition to the literary stories were helpful in fleshing out the situation or atmosphere of the time period (at the specific place) we were discussing.
Being introduced to the writings of Chinese women writers of this specified period has enabled me to get aquainted with the social issues that they discuss. This provides an insight that I did not have prior to taking the course.
literary analysis, historical background
Reading from many different women authors from various perspectives of Chinese culture really deepened my interest in not only women's issues, but societal issues in relationship to culture. Professor Yue used different methods of learning, such as reading and video material, to demonstrate different ethical issues within Chinese culture involving women, and gave me a sense of value for women's issues globally as well.
the literature that was assigned for the course were all interesting and made me think about issues in China.
I really enjoyed the reading material in the course. I also enjoyed discussions in class and having the opportunity to present in class.
11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
We did not really have time to discuss some of the instructional readings (homosexuality ones); however, they were helpful in giving a context or basis for the readings.
The least valuable aspects of the course I would say was the educational essays we had to read. Some of them were so dense it was hard to understand.
nothing
When discussions would end up being just me and maybe one other person and no one else would speak up.
After the first two weeks, the following classes were student led. I liked this aspect of the class because it made it easier to get discussion and participation points. However, the directions were not clear for the presentations. It would be better if a rubric was presented for future classes. The presentations also were not valuable because, although not often, Professor Yue would interject, leaving out room for other student's thoughts. While I value Professor Yue's thoughts and analysis, by doing this, it didn't leave much room for students to form their own opinions. Professor Yue is a great facilitator, but there are times where she'll rule the discussion and everyone else is silent. Whether this is because no one did their work or because Professor Yue wanted to instill one line of though, I don't know.
None
I found the topics covered to be relevant to the study.
when the discussion would move away from course materical and the professor would end up discussing contemporary issues of which she was obviously not knowledgable of ex. science of homosexuality, biological clock and that would become the focus of the discussion instead
Sometimes we spend too much time talking about one topic, and it cuts into our time for other topics. Either way, I still learned a lot and valued everyone's input overall.
the student presentations, sometimes it took too long or we didn't get to cover everything that is important.
None that I can think of.

26. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I liked the assigned readings; it really opened up a side of Chinese culture that I didn't know about. The videos that were assigned or shown were very interesting too. Students weren't really pressured into answering questions, which makes it a more comfortable environment.
Loved the novel candy!
This course shows traditinal and new women writers' gender related cultural, including youth culture. Learned ethical issues by reading their writings. This course focus on the more intense issues with Chinese women writers.
I liked the different selections of the readings and the many issues we examined.
I liked how each student was required to choose one lesson and be the presenter for that subject. we each got a chance to lead the class discussion, which forced myself to think in a more critical mindset.
I enjoyed every readings in the class so far. I like how professor Yue encourages class participation and it is not just a lecture class everyday.
I liked the open feel of discussions. As I mentioned earlier, Professor Yue is a great facilitator who knows the material well and poses excellent questions for discussion. I also liked how Professor Yue held us accountable for classes we missed. Although at first I thought that Professor Yue was "babying" us and being too strict, in the end I really liked this part. I can't exactly express why, but something about having to email your teacher, "Sorry I can't come to class today because I have a hangover," is way too embarrassing and I'd rather soldier on to class than sent that.
I like the variation in formats/genres of the information given: literary stories, audiovisual media (interviews, documentaries), news articles, photos.
The class discussions were very interesting. However, we did not get to hear any opinions from half the students. Each student has to give one presentation as part of the course - this is a good thing because it means that they have to say something at least on the day they present, otherwise they would not volunteer any thoughts/ideas during the whole semester. Either they were not prepared because they had not read the material, or they always had nothing to say is not clear, since we all had to sign the attendance/prep sheet for each class.
While the course revolved around the central topic of Chinese women's ethical issues, I believe that we learned so much more in the class and broadened our knowledge of women's issues in general (on a global scale).
the discussions on each reading was helpful to break down the main arguments of the author.
I really liked every aspect of the course. I thought that all the readings were relevant to the objective of the course. They helped me to understand the roles and portrayal of women in Chinese society.

28. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
* Maybe more encouragement for students who don't really speak up to say their views.
The course was overall really good but we had so much reading it was hard to go back and remember the earlier ones we read.
I think this course already improve.
Perhaps rely a little less on class discussion since so many do not readily seek to participate in these.
Although we had great class discussions, not all of the students participated in the discussions. In the beginning of the class, we had to sign the attendance sheet as well as if we were prepared. So with this class being more of a discussion class, i felt that when the whole class would participate, it was more fun and helped me to remember more of that specific topic for the day.
This course could be improved by providing a rubric for the presentations and maybe less readings per day. A rubric is needed for the presentations because although one may follow all the guidelines, it is still not "A" material. Clearer guidelines are needed or maybe a difference in grading (i.e. grading from the instructions given to the students and not by teacher expectations). The readings were great; the broad array of subject helped one understand what it meant for Chinese women writing in the 20th century. However, I'd rather concentrate on one or two texts per class rather than blaze through two or three. Although some are short stories that allow for two or three to be done per class period, other stories are 30+ pages and discussing two of those isn't valuable to our understanding.
It would be helpful to summarize important points or emphasize the ethical dilemmas following each discussion. Sometimes the discussions led by students are not particularly stimulating and do not seem to have any overarching points, as the discussions are tailored to the students' specific interests and perspective. Maybe add some movie clips into the class for emphasis or visual purposes, or just add more photos in PPT.
Besides the handful of students who consistently volunteered their opinions for the discussions, the other students should be called upon more often. The idea of signing the attendance/prep sheet is a good one because if someone is not prepared he/she will not be called upon and will not have to be put on the spot. I have been in other classes where in the course requirements it states that attendance and participation will be counted in the grading, but there had been no attendance sheet. At the end of the semester, there are many students who never asked questions or contributed to class discussions, yet some of these non participating students still managed to get "A"s, so was the teacher even paying attention?
-- snipped --
Stay on topic within a reasonable amount of time, to avoid pushing back presentations. Also, sticking within the time frame so we don't get out of class a few minutes late every so often, just because some people have other obligations to fulfill after (such as work or other classes).
possibly no student presentations since the teacher should be the most knowledgable person in the classroom, i would feel more comfortable learning from the instructor than other students.

29. Other comments:
I recommend to this course because instructor has good knowledge and skills about women writers with ethical issues.
You are a good Chinese professor, I learned a lot in this semester, thanks. Your point is very strong, I like to your teaching style.
Professor Yue is a great teacher who definitely knows her material and does not need to "prove" it. Her no nonsense, let's do this attitude is enjoyable to be around. I would definitely take a class from her again. However, she's not for everyone. If you're a slacker, don't like to come to class, and need an "A," don't take a class from her. But if you want to be challenged, understand material in a new light, get mind blown every class period, and are willing to put in about 3 hours per class period, then definitely take her. I'm not joking about the 3 hours of studying by the way, you're going to need to put a lot of work into the course. But it's a pleasure.

I would highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to take a challenging, yet insightful class about Women's Studies or Chinese culture.

5. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
It was an invaluable experience to participate in Professor Yue's class on Women Writers. I think this was almost a necessary way for me to be introduced to many of the themes of feminism, nationalism and marginalized literatures in a dialectical way that I would not have been able to achieve with individual research alone. I was also introduced to many authors and scholars in the field. Finally, the class focused on a new set of analytical vocabulary which will serve as a strong foundation for my continuing research.

I have not taken full advantage of opportunities to meet with Professor Yue outside of class. Attendance of the course on women writers has kept me grounded and in dialogue with the professor in discovering a possible term paper topic.

6. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The classtime review of the movies watched helped to gain perspective and understanding of what was watched.
The in-depth discussions really deepened the understanding of the movies and the articles and it allowed for a complex and ethical view of Chinese Diaspora than just the coures work would have given. The fact that the articles also helped explain and deepen the understanding of the films and gave a better understanding of the topics and ideas.
The films, powerpoint and essays were all valuable to the course. So were the class discussions.
The movies
watching the films and then discussing them broadened my knowledge about diaspora filmmaking as well as the Chinese culture.
The heavy focus on ethics and the necessity of critical thinking made the class enjoyable. Although I wasn't very vocal, I was learning not only as a student, but as a person as well
I appreciated the class discussions. I felt they definitely helped my understanding of the material and gave me the chance to find out insights that other students had. I really enjoyed the readings on The White Knight, hip-hop culture, and eating in diaspora. The films were also very well chosen.
This course focus on Chinese Diaspora and Visual Culture. It broadly refers to the cultural practices and social experiences of diverse Chinese migrations. Also, show that contemporary ethical issues.
7. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
There wasn't anything in the course that was not useful but it would have been better if more of the films were available on the internet.
NA
The books.
The course packet wasn't something that I found very helpful in comparison to the films but some handouts would have been helpful.
The Stuart Hall video the first day of class was overwhelming and I had a hard time wrapping my mind around what he had to say. Through discussion and the reading I came understand he was talking about how people, events, ect. were imbued with meaning, that the meaning was constantly contested, and who held power seriously impacted how the meaning was interpreted. However, watching the video all I could think was, "Huh? Say that again in everyday speak."

Professor Yue is very well-versed in this material and teaches it in a way that inspires students' interest!
This is an engaging class and I would recommend Prof. Yue to my friends. However, I would candidly tell them that if you don't come to class prepared you already lose half the value of the day's lesson. (Not to mention probably kill your participation grade.)
I think this course is very good and I have learned Chinese Diaspora, such as Chinese immigrants' life style in new countries. I will recommend this course because the instructor has good knowledge of Chinese Diaspora and Visual culture. Also, easy following information of Chinese visual culture and their immigrants life by her lecture class.

6. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Discussing the stories and essays to get a better understanding of them.
The class discussions
The teacher is very knowledgeable in her field and has a good strong character.
Discussion
Lectures regarding the topic from the professor, PPT's, detailed syllabus, and handouts made my students/professor.
The reading assigned to class and they syllabus because she abided by it all the time.
Round-table discussions and explanation of cultural aspects of the stories discussed.
The readings and class discussions were most valuable because it helped me to understand the topic of the week and to help me on my midterm paper and it will help me on my final paper as well. The discussions were very valuable because one reading I can see multiple perspectives on it.
The felt the discussion was most valuable throughout the semester because it gave students the opportunity to voice their views and/or opinions about the reading assignments.
The issues that we discuseed in the stories were the most valuable to me. I had never taken a women studies course at UH and I'm glad that I took this one. The stories were VERY interesting to me and I enjoyed reading each of them. All issues discussed in the stories and in class were very important and I thought were very valuable.
7. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
not sure
-- snipped --
Writing
There were a lot of intriguing readings but because there were so many, it was a bit overwhelming throughout the course.
Nothing in particular.
-- snipped --
The course reader. Unbound, no consecutive numbering, so that if you accidentally drop the pages you're screwed to put it back together.
There wasn't anything in the course that I thought was not valuable. The only thing that I thought was challenging is presenting because I'm not much of a speaker but the presentation helped me to understand and dig deeper into the readings more rather than just looking at it from the surface.

I loved this class!
Please offer an alternative to the unbound course reader-- either a bound version or documents available online, or even if the course reader were set up so that individual stories were separate from each other and thus could be stapled as individual documents.
This course doesn't just teach us about Chinese women writers but it also teaches us a little about Chinese history in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. I learned things about my own heritage that I didn't know about. I think this is a good class to take if you want to learn about Chinese culture as well as learning about women studies.
I rate this class good and not excellent because it lacked in discuss. Yes, every class had discussion, but for me, it was more of a debate where two people are talking over each other to get there point across, and that is not a discussion. Also, the packet was confusing.

8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Great selection of readings
Professor Yue's class was challenging and interesting because she cared so much about the subject and wanted us to care too.
I wish I had more teachers like yue baoming. She is organized and extremely passionate about her work and research. She pushes all students to think outside of the norm and to grow as a student. She is rational and objective with students and is understanding that we all come from different walks especially when talking and writing about Chinese Diaspora for a grade. I highly liked this class and wish more of hers could be taken for my major. Though I have no idea what grade ill end up with , I can honestly say I learned something and was worth the journey.
The class discussions were great and I learned a lot about the subjects we talked about.
It helped me analyze myself psychologically and culturally.
Discussion, and the power points to highlight important information about the films. It was also very helpful to watch clips in class, to refresh our memory of parts of the films.
The way she synthesized concepts in both the readings and weekly video features was extremely helpful. She explained things well and connected everything perfectly.

15. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
the course should have some kind of pre req, maybe for people who have taken chinese history courses or asian studies courses
A little less lecturing, and a bit more discussion would be nice.
some of the readings seems a little hypocritical and one sided wich i think may have reflected the media and politics of a time, but maybe some very recent examples of chinese diaspora, like within the last 4 years, would helpt balance that out and make some of the other arguments seem so harsh. but i did learn a lot, and nothing expressed through the readings and movies were false and were neet to explore. Great class
I honestly have no suggestions I thought the course was excellent!
The discussion-setting is fine, but I think part of the grade relies too heavily on class participation.

21. What changes would you make in the examinations?
none. I enjoy the take home essay format.
nothing, mingbao explained herself at the very beginning that due to the subject matter, writting was the true way of reflection of the knowledge of this class. and the standard true or false testing would not work in this class. and gave fair warning that if writting was not your thing to seek help or drop.
I thought the work load was fair and the exams were challenging and appropriate for the course.
A more definitive guideline as to what she's hoping to read in our essays.
22. Other comments:
class discussions sometimes go astray
i would like to see maybe this class become not only a ethics class but a writting intensive class. this would make more people want to take it and also would help us college students get a W since we were close to the requirnments as it was. like maybe adding a few mini papers about the vast topics in class to get it up to the WI marker.
A great class that I would recommend to others. The films were all well integrated with the readings and the discussions really brought everything together.
Good course, some of the readings challenging but overall learned new concepts and ideas

I liked the stories from the Dooling book the most.
The discussions made me thin a lot. Also, I got a lot of information not only from pofessor, but my classmates.
The professor demonstrated a great example of class discussion. She has led discussions with no wrong or right answer. Everyone was able to join and talk about the topics.
I like the way INSTRUCTOR leads the class discussion. Eveything is very clear and a lot of informations for the course. I found lots of interesting books in this class. Thank to my professor's knowledge.
I really enjoyed the readings for this course and the interesting discussions we have every class. I also really enjoyed being able to express and share my own opinions and comments about the readings and relating it to personal/others experiences with my classmates.
The readings.
The discussions among the students from various backgrounds was the most interesting. Everyone had different perspectives on the topics.
I really liked the discussions and the stories that we read in class because it gave me a better understanding of the topic of Chinese women writers.
I enjoyed the class discussions best. I also appreciated the fact that you could mark whether you were prepared or not for class in order to avoid awkward situations.
Class discussions
class discussions helped me understand the material better because different students contribute different ideas
I really liked how the group discussions challenged me to think about personal issues, and issues from different countires and in my own community. I also liked how passionate the teacher was about the subject.
The stories. Learning about Chinese culture through it's women.

34. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
This course could be improved by spending more time on historical context of the stories.
If there are more information about the authors of stories, it is nice. More films can also help students learn the topic.
Fun time!
Overall Professor Yue's class is very good and interesting. But there is something I would like to say with my instructor to change to improve the class activities. It would be more fun if she can find a way to make all students participate in class dicussion. Make everyone to talk or things like that.
I would like to get to know my classmates a little more in the beginning of the semester. It was interesting to learn about my classmates from the comments and opinions they make during class discussions but if we know each other a little bit more from the beginning, it might make discussions even more engaging in the enthusiastic way.
The amount of readings assigned could be lessened. Also the readings should be more about ethics.

Some people talk too much and others not enough. I don't know if anything can be done to fix this though.
maybe add in some written work on some stories to understand the basic storyline. it may help students understand concepts that you may want them to focus on while they read.
There was nothing that I didn't like. All aspects of the course were clear and helped challenge myself.

The midterm and final would be much more interesting to write about if the prompt addressed certain stories rather than the essays. The essays could be extremely complex and confusing so writing about them and clarifying all aspects came with difficulty.

I found it to be a very intellectually stimulating course, and I felt it helped me develop my personal ethical perspective.
Thank you.
Great class Professor! Hope you have great summer! and this class was very intense. Taught me more than women civilization, taught me discipline and responsibility.
Professor Yue is a good teacher and very strict. She loves to teach and She cares a lots for her students. We love her very much.
I really enjoyed this course, I am really glad I took this course, I really felt that my professor, Professor Yue is a very powerful person, she speak in a confident way and her voice is very affirmative. I learned a lot from her this course, I would definitely recommend her class to others and I would like to take her classes in the future.
Professor Yue, you say "right?" a lot. It's a little distracting, it's similar to when people say "um" or "like" a lot when they talk.
This course doesn't seem to be much about ethics. The readings seemed to be more about the Chinese culture and sex. It also seemed like there wasn't much discussion about ethics during the course.

discussions in class that challenged what we read in the text or conventional values.
In all, I believe the classroom discussions were ultimately the most valuable factor. The instructor skillfully steered discussion toward insightful interpretations and applications of the course material, which was often complex at many levels. I believe the overall structure was also well-designed, as the compliment of primary and secondary materials created a useful presentation of major historical themes and analytic approaches.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
-- snipped --
Some of the reading materials were hard to understand and comprehend. It made it hard to contribute to class discussion.
Overall is very good.
I didn't like having to come to class to make up for the holidays even though I understand that I'm getting my money and education's worth by being there. I also didn't always like class discussion because I often felt that the scope of the discussion was limited. There were times that I often wanted to see where our discussion could take us in terms of praxis because I think there is often a problem with discussing social problems, but never actually doing anything about it. I think it's also good for us to discuss ways that we can do something to change the problems we are discussing.

The readings were challenging and lengthy. Perhaps if they were shorter I would have been able to focus deeper instead more shallow interpretation.
The fact that there are only two assignments for the course, making the pressure to do well on both much higher. It wouldn't be so much of a bother, but worrying about how the professor will grade and what their grading style is like can sometimes put a stopper on creativity and motivation.

Sometimes the instructor is too strict and rigid when it comes to enforcing rules and making changes to the course. Also there is a strict attendance rule that affects your grade after only 3 absences. Also if you are more than 15 minutes late three times it counts as an absence. The class is two hours and thirty minutes long and 15 minutes is not even 20 percent of the class period, so I do not believe that it should be noted when one is 15 minutes late. However, I do think the instructor is great! She is so knowledgeable about the course content and is very diligent!

-Giving more specific topics for papers -Contributing term exams or quizzes
None.

I believe discussions of the exam questions before turning it in, instead of after, would be largely helpful.

I enjoy that they are essays.

I thought that the examinations were fair. I also liked how the second question of the midterm was open-ended, so that we were able to incorporate any number of the films and/or readings into our answer, yet each person's answer would have been unique. I would keep one open-ended question per exam. The only thing that I would change is perhaps distributing the examinations two weeks prior to the due date so that students have more time to work on them and give really well-thought-out answers. However, I don't really feel that this change is completely necessary since the page requirement for the examinations is doable in a one-week period.

11. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
-- snipped --
Varied readings and a strong analysis of the subject matter from a knowledgable professor made for a good class.
The diverse readings which all seemed to contribute to eachother
Class discussion was most valuable for learning others' viewpoints.
changed my reading habit and increase my critical thinking ability
I felt the the class discussions were very helpful with understanding the readings in the class.
The foundation of the course is on discussion and that to me is the most valuable.
I felt that the assigned readings offered very interesting and intellectually challenging viewpoints not only about China, but also about the ethnical principles of human beings. To me, those readings offered very valuable insight.
The reading assignments really made us think about the issues and helped us to understand a different culture than the one that most of us were raised in.

12. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
-- snipped --
author background information, although I understand that in the bigger picture it is important
I am not sure if the presentations were very useful, but I guess it was good that one person knew the stories better than the others.
N/A
I think that pretty much all the aspects of the course were valuable. If I had to pick the least valuable aspect, I would choose the student presentations since it is almost like a group presentation anyways. A class discussion led by the teacher probably will work better.
Nothing. I found everything to be very valuable.
