7. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?

Researching various types of approaches to education such as Montessori method, Green schools, Charter schools, etc...

The professor helped me to better my goals of being a teacher and how to effectively improve my teaching philosophy, ways of communication, and goals for teaching.

Professor Reed was very knowledgeable. She always had an answer for my questions. She taught in a way that was easy to understand but was also challenging for the students.

Although I enjoyed doing group work and all the various activities that were assigned, the most helpful aspect of the course was when Professor Reed lectured. She always presented interesting as well as helpful information which opened up new perspectives for me.

I learned a lot about the different styles of teaching, and has helped me broaden my own philosophy of teaching!

The readings were very helpful in putting the particular topics into context, and helped to develop a working understanding of the ethical issues we may face as future educators.

The thing I find most valuable and helpful is all the assignments that links together and are interrelated with each other. It allowed me to incorporate everything I learned and to become a knowledgeable person. It helped me with my passion of teaching and what would I expect in a classroom.

Learned a lot about what we will be doing while teaching and developed a better sense of how we each plan to teach individually.

That the course discussed and analyzed the ethical stories of teaching makes it a course that prospective teachers should take before they go further in their education major studies.

This course opened my eyes to the different styles of teaching and was really good introduction to teaching.

I learned a lot of educational foundations. And I thought is was very helpful that the material not only focused on history and such but also had actual teacher accounts. This way I was able to see through a different perspective.

I found the book Totto-chan to be helpful.

The requirements to conduct interviews and gain personal insight from members of the teaching community.

They way that Professor Reed taught us was very effective, she was able to make me want to learn the material, not because I had to learn it for a test, but because I really wanted to learn what she was teaching. Through the lessons that she assigned to us I was able to learn a great deal about what it takes to be a teacher. These are the things that I hope will be the most valuable down the road.

I found the set up of the class to be very helpful. I loved the class discussions. They really helped me gain insight into other people's perspectives.

She was very easy to get ahold of and made sure that everyone understood what we were discussing and what was expected out of upcoming assignments.

I learned more about the ethical dilemmas teachers may encounter during their career. I also began to develop my own philosophy of teaching.

I thought everything about the course was valuable. Especially the discussions and readings.

The group inquiry was a great tool for learning all the different subjects.

Everything I learned in class can be applied for when i become a teacher. I learned different ways to give presentation and I liked that we did class diccussions eveyday. I feel that this class will make me an effective teacher.

This course has taught and given me knowledge about the ethics of teaching in a way that I am able to use my critical thinking skills by putting myself in ethical situations and having classroom discussions about how we would handle these situations. Multicultural education was another valuable element that was very helpful in that I learned several different perspectives which have either changed or augmented my own perspectives on my own philosophy of education.

How she takes the time to allow everyone to share their opinions, even if it runs into time with the other activities.

I found her communication skills very effective.

I loved how had to observe a classroom to see how ethics come into play in the classroom. She also really encouraged everyone to give their opinions on issues we discussed.

8. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?

Least valuable: evaluation for group presentation

I liked all of it and learned quite a bit

There is nothing I can say about the least valuable aspect of the course.

The book, as helpful as it was, could have been turned into small handouts and short readings. Much of the material we covered in class, and so it would have been better to just do print-outs which supplement the topic for that day

There is nothing that I find least valuable in this course. I enjoyed it a lot and learned a lot from it.

The reading materials, especially the assigned books, are great, but they were only discussed a little. It would be better if the discussion of the reading materials could go deeper.

Would be better if the class met at least twice a week.

Did not like Kozol's Shame of the Nation. Selective sections from the book rather than the entire book would have been better.

I found some of the assignments to be semi-useless. Some of the books we read probably should have been covered in greater detail in class.

I only had one problem with going and observing a school. Becuase I dont know any teachers on the island it was very challenging for me to find a classroom and I could not complete the assignment on time.

I didn't like all the group work especially when having to be incharge of putting the final paper together. My group members didn't give me their portion of the paper till late the night before and I had to put it all together last minute. It was very stressful and I didn't feel like I was able to produce quality work.

The least valuable element about this course is the amount of books required for this course. I think it would be better if there was only 2 required books to read instead of 1. I really enjoyed Totto-chan and Strike and Solstis, which I found most helpful and useful.

Amazing! She's sch a wonderful and understanding teacher. I'm so lucky and glad I have her as my teacher. Her own experiences and insight helped me a lot! Her sharing of personal experiences helped me decide this was the career for me.

This was a good class! The course work was varied which kept things interesting. And the readings helped to supplement the topic of the day.

This course is very important for developing an understanding of the current state of American educational ethics. I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in the field of education.

I was able to get a greater understanding about teaching and the ethics it involves. Besides from ethics, I was able to learn about other things about teaching and schools. I believe this course was useful and will help me in the future.

The course is not difficult if you can read and speak English fairly well.

This professor is an amazing staff member of the university! I was lucky I was able to be one of her students!

Although I enjoyed doing the course work, I found it a bit difficult to set up meeting times with fellow students outside of class time to work on projects as everyone's schedule is different. So if possible, maybe allow for a little more class time to be set aside for group projects. And although the readings were interesting, I found a few of them to be quite lengthy.

This course definitely broadened my horizons in part to the instructor's expertise as well as the diversity within my peers also attending that class. I am very grateful for such participation between students and teacher.

Wonderful, inspiring, and valuable class

Suggestion: Lao Zi's Tao Te Tsing is a great philosophical book to read and I think it is relevant to the course.

Class discussion and instruction regarding the confrontation of our fears as teachers, and the necessity of engaging them directly in order to grow as both an individual and as an inquisitive participant in the profession of teaching.

I liked the way that the course was very flexible and able to be molded to our own interests and perspectives. I also found the incredible diversity of my classmates to be extremely valuable. I enjoyed all of the readings. I felt that all of them were pertinent and insightful- no fluff!

the course is very valuable for me not only in term of the content of the course but also class processes. I learn considerably not only from Dr. Reed as the professor, but also from my classmates experience. this my second gorgeous class with Dr. Reed

8. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?

I honestly can't think of anything precisely.

I felt that sometimes the discussion got away from the initial intent, or that certain individuals' perspectives were reduced too hastily by other individuals in the class. I loved the discussions, but I hated when people would get cut off or their entire point would get summed up in just a few words by other people. I feel that this happened quite a bit to Wendan and Ernie, and I was always annoyed because I found what they were saying quite interesting and wanted to hear more!

Dr. Reed has my utmost respect as a consummate professional in the higher education of the teachers of the future. I sincerely feel that through her skilled and compassionate instruction my educational experience here at the UHM College of Education has been greatly enhanced.

Great! I would have liked to hear more personal anecdotes- from the few we heard it sounds as if you have a lot to share! I know that you probably held back somewhat so that the students could share more, and I appreciate that as well.

An excellent course and one in which all educators should be required to complete in order to be a more effective participant in the profession of teaching. Specifically within the context of the often diverse and multicultural challenges confronted by teachers as they progress throughout the journey of their relationships with their students.

It was a wonderful class. The small number of students really helped for discussion to develop and become meaningful.

The interaction we had with other students. This course made us all become very close to one another because of the projects and class discussions that we had.

Her class really helped me to think deeply about multicultural education in school.

Reed's passion for her class inspired me to also feel passionate about it and motivated me to do the work.

learning the importance and significance towards multicultural education from all sorts of aspects-sexual orientation, traditions, etc.

Gay Garland is a masterful teacher, she constantly makes me think about issues that I may not have known before, but very much should consider. Thank you Gay Garland.

Gay opend my eyes to many issues that will be faced with as future educators

I have gained a greater understanding of ethical and cultural dimensions of teaching, and developed a sense of awareness regarding race, gender, and ethnicity, and how those issues may affect a studentâ??s educational experience.

I really like the Cultural Identity Map and the PAMO Group Presentation. Reading of Iron and Silk was also very good.

All of what we learned was relevant to our profession and was taught in a way that was easy to relate to. We were able to learn a lot about our classmates and to connect with each other through the use of telling stories and through sharing the culture that we grew up in. We learned a lot about respecting others views and about cultures we did not know much about.

The readings were excellent and the assignments helped us apply what we learned in our class. I enjoyed the discussions as well.

the content i feel like i could really use it towards my future career.

There were so many different perspectives presented throughout the semester, yet all of them showed the importance and value of multicultural sensitivity. Realizing that everyone in the world can benefit from culturally sensitive environments and that each situation has its own (very possible) way of attaining multicultural sensitivity has really made me stop and reflect on my actions. I realize that "we are all agents of change" (cliche, but so true). Also, I thought it was very effective to have students discuss a question in small groups before coming together in a big class discussion. Whenever we did this our class discussions tended to be more lively. Somehow, sharing thoughts and opinions in a more. . . "intimate" setting (ie. with 2 or 3 other students) makes one's thoughts seem more valid and thus, more worthy to be shared with a large group.

one of the best professors I have ever had. Professor Reed is so approachable and understanding that it is hard not to be engaged in the class. One of the few professors who I can honestly say did not waste by assigning reading out of a textbook that was irrelevant or having class discussions that don't make a difference. I gained something from every book that we read, every class that I attended and each assignment that I did.

She is a very passionate teacher which is very hard to come by these days which makes her a great teacher because I respect her for really trying to broaden our minds.

Around the second or third week of the semester I stopped thinking of this as a course. This was an enjoyable Tuesday morning where I went to a book club and read for pleasure about subjects that I am interested in. It was where I went to learn about topics that interested me. It was a class where all of the students became friends.

The course was a definite eye opener. Even if it wasn't required, I would have taken it, esp. with Reed.

Everyone should take this class.

7. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?

the books were wonderful! there was a lot of reading in this class, but I did it (mostly) with enthusiasm because the books and readings were engaging and well written.

Selection of the texts was really valuable and helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed each book and thought that each book added great discussion and depth to the course and the content that we discussed through each article. I love this theory of using these novels rather than actual text books.

I have gained many insights about the issue of cultural diversity and education. I think most discussions in the course were very valuable to my career as a teacher and a multicultural practitioner. The assignments provided me with opportunities to discover different aspects of cultural diversity. I think I also got much knowledge from the reading texts provided and recommended by the instructor. I think it was an excellent course.

The Instructor's knowledge and passion regarding course content was something valuable to me. I also felt that the Instructor's style cultivated and allowed for meaningful discussion. The course itself was valuable because it provided literature that I would not have otherwise stumbled upon. It went beyond the depth of an introductory course (as should be expected)which allowed me to look at diversity from multiple and complex angles.

I didn't 100% enjoy having classmates lead some of the discussions, sometimes I felt that if Dr. Reed had led the class, we would have had a better discussion.

Excellent! Dr. Reed was very helpful and understanding. She created a lot of opportunities for students to bring their own cultural identities to class discussions, which was very appropriate to the objectives of the course.

(again)that she is passionate and well-informed. She definitely creates a class culture where students feel they are free to fully express themselves and contribute their thoughts. At the start of the semester, I registered for two courses, intending to drop the least desirable of the two. After meeting Professor Reed, I immediately decided to take her course because I could tell that my time would be well spent and that her course would offer the type of instruction appropriate for the graduate level. it was a great class. in many classes at UH I say, "I'm not learning anything in this class" or "this is a terrible class" but in Dr. Reeds class - it's an exception, I say, "this is my one good class" or "I have one good class." Her class had good readings, amazing books, and quality class discussions. The assignments challenged me, while at the same time were not overwhelming of my time and energy. This is the best class I have had at UH.
