I would like to suggest using a projector that can magnify for the professor to write on instead of a chalkboard to allow people in a large class (60-80 students) sitting at the back to see the equations more easily.
Mahalo, Professor, for a wonderful experience. You have an incredible depth of understanding, and (as a former teacher myself) I was very impressed with your ability to convey both simple interpretations of major concepts along with poignant insights into some pretty hefty nuances. I know it was brief, but you really seem to be an expert scientist and masterful teacher. Mahalo nui loa for putting in the time and effort to share with us.
This class was very enjoyable. I did not expect this class to go by so quickly. Professor Pui did an excellent job making this summer course bearable since there is a lot of content to learn in such a short amount of time. He is the funniest professor I have ever met. I would love to take another class from him. UNCLE PUI NUMBER ONE!!!!
Dr. Lam is an extraordinary teacher who is great at teaching. He did an excellent job considering it was a summer class.
Professor Lam is an delightful professor to have and a lot of physics concepts were well taught throughout the course!
Really enjoyable professor
I think his office hours were helpful and the quizzes were also helpful to study for exams.
Maybe during reviews, it would be helpful to have a study guide just so that we don't have to scurry over so many topics/information that was covered every 2 weeks. And I think quizzes should count about 25% of the grade or 30%. 40% seems a bit high, especially when the material was only presented the day before. I apologize if I sound too whiny. I understand that there are people who immediately understand the information and that this course is rigorous, especially in the summer--"drinking from a fire hydrant"--but it would be very helpful if the quizzes were not so much of the grade, just my opinion.
Dr. Lam is a very knowledgeable professor who cares about whether or not his students understand the concepts of physics. He tries to lighten up the intensity of the class with his jokes.
He is a very very good professor. I love his jokes. They make the class enjoyable. He teaches really well. Emphasizes on main points of the chapter. Gives us nice feedback on quizzes.
Professor Lam seems to be genuinely interested in the success of his students and offers help to those who need it. He is very approachable, and he is overall an excellent professor.
Professor Lam is very passionate about physics. He enjoys what he teaches.
Excellent prof.
This is a difficult subject to cover in such a short period of time, but Mr. Lam managed to make it through quickly and efficiently.
He is really funny.
Although Physics is a very challenging and tough course to take over summer, Professor Lam did a great job in providing us help and support when we needed it. Overall, he was great! But overall, the course is tough over the summer.
Dr. Lam, or Uncle Pui as some brave students called him, demonstrated superior control over both lecturing and quiz periods. He effectively communicates seemingly convoluted concepts through the use of concise derivations of the formulas or laws themselves, rarely having the need to repeat himself. He answers every student's question(s) without hesitation or folly. Also, as a veteran professor, he is able to pinpoint his students' misunderstandings/misconceptions and address those with exquisite detail. His knowledge goes way beyond the scope of the class, allowing him to pull concepts from the real world and dissect them as examples of the concepts we learn in class. Furthermore, he is an exceptional teacher, in that he understands exactly how a test should be written. Oftentimes, I encounter tests that involve heavy computation and meticulousness. Those tests distract me from conveying my understanding of the concepts and rather punishes me for my errors in number crunching. Dr. Lam's tests are supremely well written in that the questions he asks focus on key concepts and ideas while minimizing the need for heavy numerical computation. This allows each student to demonstrate his/her understanding of the concepts, rather than assess how well they can punch numbers into a calculator. I believe Uncle Pui is a superb teacher; it's a shame that not all teachers are like him. Moreover, he is a wonderful and funny person to be around and it comforts me knowing that he is the man in charge of the Physics department.
hard
The material was hard to understand, but he was a great instructor, who was always willing to help his students. He is also very funny and entertaining!

I only took this class because I had to
Professor Lam is one of the best teachers I've had the pleasure of being instructed by, he made a subject that I've always struggled with understandable!
I really liked the format of this course. The quizzes were extremely helpful because we got immediate feedback on how to do the problem.
I personally felt that the daily quizes were very unfair and did not truly represent the students understanding of the subject. I constantly struggled with the quizes because of the short time allowed for each question as well as not being allowed to use notes. Given that this was a summer session and a lot of material was packed into a short time frame, I would have been beneficial to the student's grades to simply collect homework. I understand that would have been a lot of work for the professor, but each day we spent 30 to 40 minutes on the quizes that could have been better served as lecture time. If the professor did not want to grade homework, he could have assigned homework problems that did not have solutions. Then the next day in class, we could enter the answers with our iClickers. This would have taken 10 minutes and given students the necessary resources to correctly complete the problems.
I found the class enjoyable even though I didn't do to well in it.
Pui Lam is a very nice and wise professor. His teaching also make the course easier to understand. Only because of the limited of time duiring the summer section, we barely took in things in this class.
The quizzes made it easier to study for the exams because we practiced and studied the concepts on how to apply them. The last question on the exams are a little difficult, but that's to be expected to test us on what we've learned. Overall I was able to learn a lot of the material and keep up with the speed that the class was taught. I liked the power point because it made it easier to understand certain notations than what the book had used as well as the main things we needed to know overall.
Pui Lam is a knowledgable teacher with good tutoring skills, but sometimes answers with a degrading tone when asked a question that he believes is simple
I would rather turn in daily home worth than take a daily quiz. It's hard to get every single chapter done nightly.
Professor Lam is a super cool person! He's really funny and really smart. However, I feel as if the quizzes and tests are unfair because if you get the word problem wrong you can't really do much to recover. I think word problems should've been worth 2 points on quizzes, and worth 20 points on midterms. You should leave it the way it is though, so future students can suffer just like us :) thanks Professor Lam!
I was very impressed with Professor Lam and his enthusiasm for physics. Many of the more difficult sides of this course were attributed to the fact that its a summer course providing less time to absorb the content. I am honestly interested in physics now and am reconsidering my interests and potential major. If given the chance i would definitely take another class from professor Lam as he made this class enjoyable despite the difficulty.
Great teaching, but make assign more challenging problems.
The class was not timed efficiently. At the beginning of each class a quiz was given on the previous days material. Although important, the quizzes took too much time out of the lecture. Not all of the lectures were finished and some topics and examples had to be skipped or rushed through because too much time was lost taking quizzes. It would be more beneficial to go through the lectures as they are more important. Too much time was wasted on quizzes. Not everything was explained well in the lectures. In fact, the lectures only scratched the surface of most topics and did not go in debt or contain useful explanations. Also it wasn't always clear as to what part of a concept needed to be understood. Not all types of problems were gone over or taught and too much was left to figure out on our own. I felt like I was stumbling blindly in the dark trying to teach myself most of the course. The professors office hours were useless as they were mostly a repeat of the lectures. Physics is a subject I am very passionate about and enjoy, but this class really made it difficult to continue that passion. It was probably the worst class I've ever taken at UH Manoa and it strongly pulled me away from wanting to continue in physics. It was just a bad experience overall and I hope I never have to take another class with this professor again. I was extremely disappointment, this actually being a subject I do enjoy. Oh and to top it all off after this class my 4.0 gpa was completely destroyed. I would not recommend this professor to anybody unless they were taking a physics 600 level course, then maybe he'd be okay, but certainly not acceptable at a 100 level course. Some professors just can't teach 100 level students.
I extremely appreciated that Dr. Lam not only covered the concepts of Physics that were presented in his PowerPoints but added on additional concepts and ideas that I don't think would have normally been covered. It kept the class entertaining and interesting. Also, while presenting his PowerPoints he never seemed to read directly off of the slide as opposed to other professors I have had. He would always try to convey the information as clearly and as simplistic as possible before delving deeper into the concepts which made it a lot easier to visualize and understand.
This was a very difficult class to me. The lecture slides were a life-saver though. There are a few things I'd like to see in future Physics 170 classes. 1) Randomized class #s -- it is quite easy to figure out who is who on the grades sheet because numbers are assigned alphabetically. 2) Numbered lecture slides -- have slides labeled with numbers 3) Circle/highlight important formulas or ideas I certainly learned a lot.
The class lectures sometimes become very dry; I think mixing in a bit of physics humor as well as demonstrating situations that happen in everyday life would be useful. Also, there is a plethora of type-Os in the slides/quizzes that should be rectified.
The daily quizzes stressed me out, not only because it was such a large portion of our grade, but also because of the limited time on each question. For having such an accelerated class I would have achieved more learning of physics if the pressure of being graded was not a factor. Each day continued to discourage my academic self esteem at how hard I was working to produce little reward. I do not think my poor grade is due to any academic inadequacy , but to a differences in comprehensive learning techniques.
Uncle Pui had a strong grasp of the content. I thought he was pretty straight forward in what he expected and what he wanted. He didn't give any homework and daily quizzes meant the responsibility was on the student. Therefore I believe that the low grade averages is not representative of his teaching. Students who don't put in their share of learning are the students who ultimately receive the low grades. Because this is the summer, I feel that many students expected the highest result with the lowest energy input. If you put in the work, I believe that his class was do-able.

Sometimes Professor Lam would expect us to know something, and not really answer the question or he'd make it seem like it's really obvious and make us feel bad.
Dr. Lam is very knowledgeable and pretty funny in class. It's difficult to keep up with a summer version of this course, but I felt that I did learn new things in his lectures. To be honest, I think that the best way Dr. Lam can improve his course is to provide more incentives to have the class do their homework. His philosophy on education, however, is that students should take charge of their own learning, which I think is totally great. Still, it becomes painfully obvious that no one is doing their homework when the class average is like a 60... In cases like that, perhaps it would be better to make homework a requirement, or make the quizzes impossibly difficult without having done the homework. I hear that some transfer students have a difficult time doing the quizzes with only 1:30 to do each problem due to the language barrier. Perhaps more difficult questions with more time allotted for each problem might put everyone on more equal ground. His quiz questions are mostly conceptual, so I can see how that would be even more difficult for someone who doesn't have English as a first language.
If I were to take another physics class, I would hope he is teaching it.
Dr. Lam has Ph 170 down to the t. I greatly appreciated that he gave class materials ahead of time and left room in the curriculum for review sessions.
Tests involved a good amount of questions testing knowledge and concepts but should include more free answers testing set-up and calculations.
This course is extremely hard, but Professor Lam's humor and amiable demeanor made it bearable. I hope future and current students share my sentiments.
Professor Lam is a good teacher and treats his students fairly. The material is sometimes difficult, but his lectures and explanations are helpful.
Professor Lam was really funny and kept the class interesting! I didn't mind coming to summer school too much because his class was very entertaining :)

If possible, I would like to see him to go over previous homework. I had hard time not knowing whether i gotten the answer for the HW. I would like to see the solution after the homework is due so when i am correcting my homework, i can double check the solution. Exam's conceptual portion is very difficult for someone who's have hard time understanding the problem. he would post the exam solution making it easier to what i did wrong and how i can correct it something i liked.
I felt like certain topics were drug out too long, and as a result, other topics like chaos and continuim mechanics were skipped. This, however, may be because Luis Ellias did not engage the class during the first semester, which left the class unprepared for the second semester. I would like to see the course planned out from the beginning of PHYS310 as follows: There should be a homework assignment after each class meeting which should take students between 1-3 hours to complete. The assignment should include a problem to practice from the last lesson, as well as the page numbers which need to be read for the upcoming lesson. Solutions, or at least answers, should be made available for students to grade their own, but credit should be given in the form of a check-mark for attempting the problem. This would force students to do physics every other night, and allow the course to proceed at the proper pace to cover all the material. This is just a suggestion, and I know that a diligent student would do this anyway, but making such a thing mandatory would benefit the whole class. This suggestion comes from my Greek course, in which I've completed 78 lessons this year and learned a tremendous amount of material. All year long I said "I wish I would put as much effort into my physics as I do my 100 level language class." Of course, I could have put that much time into it, but when it's not due the next day it gets put off, which is true for most students. So why not make something due every day? (The check mark system reduces the amount of grading and makes this system work.)
Thank you so much Dr. Lam, you have definitely helped my understanding of Classical Mechanics. It was a challenging course, but this is really good for allowing me to understand the subject both conceptually and mathematically.
At the beginning of the semester, I was nervous about being taught by the department head, but as the semester progressed, I felt more and more comfortable. Dr. Lam is an excellent teacher
This class was interesting, professor Lam is a fantastic lecturer! He not only takes the time to make sure that the class as a whole understands the material, he also makes lecture entertaining and easy to pay attention to. I would love to take another course by professor Lam in the future!
I didn't work particularly hard in this class and I feel like I certainly could have done better. This is the first physics course I've had without a curve and I think I should have taken it more seriously because of that.

I did not like how Mr. Lam attempted to mislead us on his quizzes. He should quiz us on the principles, not whether we can decipher his wording of the question
really nice professor when working one on one in office hrs. could make lectures a bit more understandable. i understand there's lots of material to be covered and too little time, but felt really rushed through lecture which made understanding of concepts more difficult. also, wouldn't hurt to ask class if anyone has any questions during lecture. also, quizzes were new to me with iclicker, but somewhat helpful. what would be more helpful is homework due every so often because it'll make students do the work, and therefore learn themselves. also, quizzes being 40% of grade is not cool. hw should be a part of the grade too. but super nice guy! thanks!
enjoyed the class
Some of my comments were influenced by the fact that I am taking this course because my college would not accept my AP credits (despite an A and a 5). As such, this class is mostly review for me.
The exams are very tricky, but I can see how the stress the important concepts from each concepts. I found this course to be more difficult compared to taking it during the regular semester. The factor of time has contributed to the class being difficult, but I do not remember all the concepts being this difficult.
Great class, enjoyable lectures. I would suggest letting the class know when the iClicker time is about to expire. I would catch myself rushing to answer vs. actually making a intellectual conclusion.
Good class, some ambiguous iclicker questions at times. Overall clear lectures, funny guy.
I believe that the clicker quizzes are not a good representation of the student's knowledge. The clicker quizzes are so different from a conventional quiz that students tend to do worse than normal. I felt more pressured while taking a clicker quiz as compared to a regular quiz on paper. I believe that I would have been able to do better on the quizzes had they been regular quizzes. His teaching was a little fast and he rushed through many lectures. I know it is a summer session, but I would have liked him to explain more. When he is asked questions about the material he responds by inferring that we should have listened and know it already. He explains by repeating what he already said, he does not go into more depth when asked a question.
Dr. Lam is an excellent teacher with great dedication to his students and the subject. One of my favorite teachers so far.
He needs to do follow up on things he said he would do. One example is to post the answers for the midterms because he doesnt seem to have the time to really go over every question so by posting it up we can see how it's done for ourselves.
He is a very thorough professor and explains everything in different ways in order to benefit everyone. Definitely the most effective professor I've ever had.
questions are tricky which did not help me fully learn each subject. He would say one thing n the next question i would think its one answer but its really a different answer.
This course involved a lot of material, but I felt like Dr. Lam could have stressed the basic concepts more during the lecture instead of only after the quiz. Some students felt like they learned more after the quiz than during the lecture. This is unfortunate since the quizzes are graded. Maybe ask more conceptual questions during lecture. I feel like I relied mostly on what I learned in high school, and I was luckier than my peers in that way. The one day when Dr. Lam taught lecture without the powerpoint was the first time I felt like I actually understood the material without relying on what I knew from high school. I think class would be better without relying on the powerpoint, because it causes Dr. Lam to ensure only important concepts are demonstrated, and it's more interactive. Granted, the powerpoints are perfect for reviewing the material. Other than that, I believe Dr. Lam is a very charismatic professor. He'd always have the class interested in what he had to say, and he encouraged questions and student participation.
Professor Lam was excellent in teaching the physics course and enthusiastic about the topic. He was extremely helpful and the office hours are convenient because they are normally held after class. There are daily quizzes to ensure understanding about the topic. The material is based on what he emphasizes during lectures, which are extremely thorough, considering we were learning a chapter a day (due to the short period of time for the summer). I recommend Professor Lam to other students because he challenges you to go beyond textbook definitions and to refine ones' thinking. He is very encouraging of students and clarifies what students may not know through approaching the issue differently, especially by applying the concepts to every day life. Professor Lam is challenging, yet the rewards are beneficial to learning physics.
It was a summer course thus we will not be able to remember anything. Also having to take the quizzes on iclickers is stupid since its so easy to shut them off or press the wrong button by mistake.

16. Other comments:
I love the class. Professor Lam is an excellent people, very helpful and I have learnt a lot!
I loved how the course was structured so that we have a predictable weekly schedule. I also found the paragraph writing and weekly questions about the reading very helpful.
I did not like the text book. On the other hand the Professor's handouts were very informative and to the point.
Prof. Lam presented the material in a enthusiastic and encouraging way that helped motivate me to study harder. I really enjoyed having him as an instructor this semester.
