13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

She knew her subject well. She knew when the class was lost in the subject. Keeps class exciting and puts in effort to ensure students understand the material I really liked her personality. She was very engaging with the class. She could understand the struggle to understand the material and simplified as much as she can. Enthusiastic about subject! Friendly, encouraging, willing to listen to students, willing to answer questions I Think Mackenzie Manningâ??s strength for this class is that she seems to enjoy the subject and when she lectures that comes through and it makes her lectures more interesting She relates to her students. knew biology very well and taught the subject in a way that was easy to understand. She knows subject well, and always accessible to students. She knows many things about DNA. Very approachable and a good teacher as she explains things very in depth eith great detial She is very open the questions and more than willing to help with any confusion. She explained things really well, and made them easy to understand She spreads her passion of biology to students and make boring things to interesting stuff. She is motivated, and so are we... most of the time. She knew what she was talking about, she was very concern for every student in her class and made sure that each person knew what she was talking about. Very encouraging person about going to recitation, asking for help, etc. She is very knowledgeable about the area of biology. She has strong passion to teach us about those. Very enthusiastic about Biology. She was very approachable. I love the fact she relates everything we laern to real life. Its easier to understand that way. Helps me a lot. She knows her material well and tries to make class interesting.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Slow down in her teaching. Do more study guides during class. Better powerpoints More hands-on assignments No "Mastering Biology," pen and paper problems from the book is good enough. A study guide would be nice, because the first study guide really helped me be prepare what was on the test. Plan for review days, the one we had was extremely helpful! Each test had a lot to go over so a little more review of the subject the class before the test would help. Although I understand we are short of time. The recitations helped a lot. Maybe explain better in lecture. less essay questions for the exams. can slow down her lecture during class. Exam is too hard and recitation time is not good (Sunday 5:15-7:15) None There's nothing to change of her teaching. Only additional time is needed. There are too much to cover in two days a week. I wonder why department chair made this course only twice a day. If it is not department chair and Manning made this course twice a day, WTH!!! N/a Nothing special! Easier tests. I think organization was an issue and a better powerpoint for students to study. None.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

On one day of lecture she stopped the class to do an in-class study guide before a test. Everything she could have done. She sympathized with the class in learning the material. Encourage us to stay awake. willing to meet with students to talk, encouraging, answers student's questions yes She always encourages us to go to office hours, talk to her and just be open. encourages all of us to attend the recitation sessions. she is always available during her office hour. She makes good atmosphere to contact her. She always says "Please E-mail me if you have questions." She makes everything very clear and provides help outside of the classroom available constantly. Was always available to help with anything we needed She answers all the questions that students make. If she doesn't have an answer, she goes after to find answers. She motivates her students in many ways, too. Asking the whole class if we do understand before moving forward to the next subject or if not, tell Josh (recitation teacher) to go over with us students. She tried to encourage us to be interested in biology in many ways. She gave us 'live' lecture not like one way lecture, many opportunities for us to stop by her office to ask any questions or help us. Emails. She was there before and after class for any question When we asked for help she would provide it. She also had study sheets for us to do which helped a lot. Does her best to explain the material to us to make it understandable and relateable.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Slow down a little more. Have more office hours. I would without reservations because she has a great personality as a instructor. Yeah, just have to be ready to learn alot! yes, she is a good teacher yes I would recommend her because she keeps you interested in that subject. yes because of her teaching style. her exams are "hard core" but it helps us understand biology better. yes. I will recommend because her personality is very good. She is fun and easy to learn from. She turns concepts in to tangibles making them easier to understand. Yes! I like her teaching style. Cramming knowledge in your head in such short time. Yes, she's very helpful, understandable, reasonable,& bright teacher. If she knows your trying hard, then she knows she's doing her job rather than just letting you fail and not bother a student at all. Definitely! Her lecture is very interesting. Yes, teaches a lot of knowledge. No, the class was hard to follow because it was so unorganized. Yes. I took a bio class once and that teacher just taught everything off the textbook. Her class was boring and I didnt learn much. This class was taught based off her lectures and powerpoint slides. The textbook was more for reference.

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

She's a good teacher. She c ares about her student and very fast paced. Fun but hard class when we don't have enough time. Good teacher Thank you!! I would recommend her to any perspective student! Great teacher. She's funny and make the lessons more understandable to us. Compares biology to real situations for bettering understandings. Thank you for your great lecture. It was not only for 'studying' but for being interested in everything that happens in our lives. Nice lady. Thanks for being such an awesome teacher. =D looking forward to taking your other classes.

18. Other comments:

Chemistry should be required, then that section won't need to be it thus corse. From the chem background I have the way it's tought in biology is not sufficient. I need only one more thing from this course. More lecture time. That's it. She is totally fine and teaches good. Overall good experience.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

encouraging, willing to listen to students, willing to answer student's questions, friendly Attitude towards the class Very personable and fair. Enthusiastic teacher and engages class to participate. Knows subject well. She is open to questions and encourages participation. Her enthusiastic way of teaching motivates me to learn. Very willing to help and answer any questions that students had. She made the students feel comfortable in class so the subjects were easier to learn. Able to relate material to students Great communicator very friendly and approachable; fair grader; good at explaining well organized as far as grading goes. well organized and knowledgable Encouraging, positive teacher. Made a general biology class very interesting and fun (which can be difficult). We is very good at explaining. She was able to make labs enjoyable.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Lab prelab, and lab write up takes 3-6 hours total to do for each lab. This class seems like a writing intensive course but it is only a 1 credit lab. Perhaps reduce the amount of required writing? I dont feel we should do lab reports. A lot of the experiments we do are more observational. And a post lab quiz i feel would suffice. yes i do understand the nalytical use for lab reports but i dont feel its right for an introductory lab like this. Some field work, because being in the lab all the time is just doesnt seem right as biology i feel at least has more to do with live experience Pre-lab lectures a little more organized. And established what is need to be accomplished and what is expected before lab more clearly. N/A The class was fine and I think there is nothing really that I would change about the class. Although the class is pretty writing intensive for a biology lab, i'm sure there is good reason for that. If I had to change anything I would make the class writing intensive or make the class a 2 credit class instead of a 1 credit class to compensate for the amount of work being done. Maybe cut out the pre lab it is a waste of time. Writing Intensive Lab Reports to somewhat easier report format. sometimes the answers to the prelab quizzes were not found in the prelab reading; at the beginning of the semester i didn't know that she sent out instructions for the lab report even though it is a just a one credit class she did not seem to prepair herself before lab. she was orgainized as a person but would stubble through explaining each lab before we started. if students have to read and understand the labs so should she none none I think that for the first lab it was hard to figure out what she was looking for in the lab write up.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

answers students questions, willing to explain concepts and subject matter if it is difficult or unclear to students, willing to listen to students, encouraging She would talk to us if she felt we were struggling Accessible via e-mail. Offered Excel tutorial help and help in general. Answered any questions proposed. She had a willingness to meet outside of class to cover things that weren't understood or missed even. She made herself available outside of class and was willing to help students to the best of her ability. Especially if it had to do with any technical problems, she would make sure that the students would understand the material that they had questions on. always encouraging us to talk to her always approachable and showed interest in students answer emails promptly and was available outside of class There were a few topics that I was very interested in, but didn't grasp the concepts that well. When I approached Ms. Manning, she spent extra time making sure I understood everything. Explained each lab procedure in detail so that each student knew what to do and would go over it again if one of us didn't understand. She answered all of our questions promptly. She stayed after each class for questions.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes, she is a good teacher yes, fun lab but to many reports Yes! Yes she is personable which it makes it easier to learn from. Yes I would recommend her to others because she makes students feel comfortable in class which helps people learn the subject easier. She reaches out to students on a personal level which gives the students a better overall class experience. Yes, great teacher yes no. she is laid back and cool but does not explain material or expectations clear enough before each class. yes, pushes you to understand key concepts I would definitely recommend Ms. Manning to students. I have taken upper level science course that were difficult, but extremely boring and I never really felt like I was doing actual science or discovering anything. However, I Mackenzie Manning's biology lab I enjoyed going to every week and felt like I was really a part of the scientific process of experimentation and discovery. I especially enjoyed the molecular biology lab and the encouragement Ms. Manning gave us in having scientific freedom to create and test our own experiment. Yes. yes Yes, great Lab! Made students work for their lab grade, and it was fun (with the right group members). For more difficult labs, you made powerpoints, which were useful.

N/A Mackenzie portrays a very mellow and fun persona which brings out alot of positive energy in the students. This energy overall helps in the learning process for the class. funny Very passionate about what she teaches and it comes across in class! Great teacher.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

I really liked her character; she wasn't afraid of question and show her knowledges. She knows her materials and that confident makes me want to listen and absorb what she is teaching. She owns her space, and which was very comfortable to me. trying to keep us interested She knows her subject and has great enthusiasm. It was a very fun and interesting class. She provided a good atmosphere for learning. I also like how she provided the study guides for the exams. I like how she shows short videos throughout her lecture, this makes the lecture more interesting and solidifies subjects talked about in lecture. She is very knowledgeable and interested in the subject. Awesome teacher! Passionate about biology, makes learning interesting. Ms. Manning knows her subject. She's available outside of class. She participates in student geared activities. Her passion for biology and the concern for teaching well. Organized, funny, and knowledgable Great at explaining concepts and subjects thoroughly and clearly. Very well spoken and obviously expresses her passion for biology through her teaching. She's very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about biology and is also very friendly and approachable to students. Knowing subject matter passionate...helpful...connects class to the real world ! Motivation as a teacher Super enthusiastic and genuinely cares. Takes the time to answer all questions and does a good job being as knowledgeable as can be expected for a course covering such a broad scope of material. She is very enthusiastic about the subject and engages the students in a way that gets them excited about what they're studying. She is also very approachable which helps with asking questions about things we may not understand in class. Knowing a lot of information about her lectures. I enjoyed the youtube videos that were shown to gain a better understanding of the material. She's very accessible. She knows the material very well. She help the student to succeed in class. She would ask the student what should she do to improve her exam after an exam. Strengths as a teacher is her outgoing personality , which makes her approachable. She is always willing to offer help and is very understanding. She can emphasize with her students and does hand on activities to allow the student to easily understand the course materials.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

N/A better study guides/teaching methods to prepare everyone for exams The powerpoints should be more descriptive of the material that will be on the exams. Slightly less powerpoint I'd change the powerpoints. I'd make them more indepth more relevant to the subject matter as far as focal points and information we as a class should know about each topic, especially regarding testing. If possible, spreading out the material over a longer period of time. Also, a little more clarity on the study guides as far as what should be focused on for the exams. none If possible, exams schedule could be a little more flexible. Could also focus more on the important and harder concepts or topics for every chapter, instead of going over everything in the book. She should also go over all exams after it was graded, so that students can learn from their mistakes and what could of been done better. I thought the way she reordered some of the lessons from the book was effective (grouping all the plant stuff together and then all the animal stuff together separately), and I thought it could actually be reordered further. Specifically, the book covers the animal phyla and the different types of body systems among them before actually discussing the systems themselves. There was an exercise on Mastering Biology back when we were covering the animal phyla asking us to identify the types of systems found in the different phyla without ever having learned about many of them yet (Malpigian tubules come to mind, which was explained later in the excretory chapter). I just thought covering the systems and mentioning the associated phyla briefly before going more in depth on the evolutionary relationships later might be more helpful. Work on analogies. Give out quizzes at end of class to encourage student participation so they will come to class. Love her style N/A Speak slower. There were several lessons we flew through and then had time at the end, for example immunology, but it would have been easier to follow and absorb if we'd taken the full time. None. I've taken her before and I believe she's made great improvements since last semester. To organize the chapters better with more time in between the exams. instead of having a 4th exam 2weeks after the 3rd exam, have the 4th exam on the last day of school; in a way, it's a 2-part final exam material was away too much for a small semester None. no changes

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

Asking questions She helped outside of class to answer any questions. She gave us weekly study guides, she was available for questions, she extended a couple online assignments when we were having difficulty completing them because of technical issues, and she encouraged us to use study groups. Encouraging class interaction, being available for questions and assistance with course material, and accommodating when students' needs arise. Stayed after class to answer questions and always responds to emails. Emailing us if there are any changes in the course. time never an issue...prompt emails...additional indepth explainations on off subject material! Would talk to us if we were struggling in class By asking. She got our exams back to us in a timely fashion and was willing to go over any questions we may have had on the exam. She also makes herself available for questions whenever possible. She seems genuinely concerned about the learning taking place in her course. By meeting up with us after class. She is very helpful when you need help. She help you understand the concepts of biology by showing videos in class and drawing on the board. Responds quickly to emails, show concerns for student in difficult situations. Very understanding.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

I recommended to friends already. She knows what she has to do and her class was enjoyable. sure Yes, She has a passion for the subject and is a great teacher who cares for the students. Yes, this was a very good class overall. I would recommend her lecture to other students, especially 171. She really seems to know and understand Bio 171 off the top of her head. I'd also recommend 172, but I'd also mention that they need to do a lot of personal reading, form a good study group, and prepare for at least one all nighter before each test. Yes! She is a good professor. She is not only provide the face-to-face course, but also encoourage us to do the on-hand exercise. That make more sense for us to understand the course material which relate to the real-world. She enjoys this subject, and it is of course good to student to have that teacher. This lab really went along with the lecture, and it helped me a lot, a lot, a lot. She knows the material really well and is easy to talk to. She's very easy to talk to and explains each subject in a clear manner. She knew her material and told us how to do everything in the lab. She would always show her care to student. For example, she comes close to each student when they are doing the lab. She likes ask students if they have quesiton. She always took time to explain the labs and was flexible if students couldn't complete a lab on time once or twice since some of them were quite long. Mackenzie would always ask if we had any questions or concerns regarding anything we were doing. She helped us throughout all our labs, especially in the last ecology lab. she drove to three different stream sites to help all the students evaluate their streams, She interacts with the students a lot.

Yes. she is a great professor. Yes. She is very passionated and friendly. Nice person. yes, the lab was challenging but fun too. She also tried to make sure everyone had an understanding of a certain topic before she moved onto the next one. She is very enthusiastic and knowledgable about the different concepts of the course. She was willing to answer any questions brought up by any student in the classroom and also willing to research and address the question with a better answer if she didn't know the information off the top of her head. She brings lots of energy to the classroom. Her enthusiasm for the subject made the class more exciting. She will answer any question no matter how dumb it may sound. Professor Manning is very knowledgable in the field of Biology. Knows her subject very well... Great and understanding teacher that is always willing to help and is always available to answer questions. I can see she loves the subject she teaches and gets very exited. 14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Organize the files on the computer so that they are easier to find during class. Rename the recitation files so that they are easier to find. The files were listed out of order. There are typos on some of the worksheets. Nothing serious, but just enough to notice. She tries to make things relatable and thinks of examples from the top of her head, but sometimes her examples make things harder to understand. The professor seems to know her material, but honestly, it's difficult to follow her when she just talks. I suggest that she write on the board more as a supplement to her slides. Not to be so picky when she is grading tests. There are several questions where I demonstrated that I understand the concept well but did not explain it exactly how she wanted and was marked off. An example being on the first test where she asked about the scientific method. She wanted students to come up with steps to determine whether a rock is alive or not. I explained the steps of the scientific method in DETAIL and applied pretty vague steps of how I would actually test the rock. This cost me five points even though I believe if you read my answer it clearly demonstrates a strong understanding of the scientific method. Often her tests are extremely detailed and long making it difficult to finish them in the time allotted to take it. This cost me points on some of the tests too. I was short on time and had to rush through the test in order to get at least some sort of answer down and left out important details in some questions. I believe that was the difference between me getting an A on two of the tests. I would suggest that she move away from using power point slides for the bulk of her teaching presentation. Most of the images shown on the slides were copied right out of the book, which we could all refer to if she brought them up. I felt like I retained and understood more when she would use the white board to draw out her own images to explain what she was trying to explain. Her explanations and lectures were sometimes hard to follow and hard to concentrate on. N/A Recitation really helps... One thing that should be used more often is explaining on the board, concepts that are harder to understand are better explained without a powerpoint. The book can be also very confusing and it would be great if most important things would be summed up in lectures. Lectures are very useful and important, homework is not a big help at all, can confuse as well. Work on your analogies. I'm not sure why you have difficultly relating real life topics to biology. I really don't think biology is boring. Less power point diagrams, more teacher white board explanations. Maybe more chances for extra credit since it's such a fast pace course. I think it would be a little more effective if the recitation worksheets were actually gone through in class and then further discussed and clarified at the recitation sessions. I wish we were given an extra day to do the online homework. Sometimes it was hard to complete by the next day at midnight when you go to school full time and work full-time.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

She offered students the option of recitation to help us learn better. She wants her students to do well in the class and holds recitation sessions with a tutor and she is also available outside of class for extra help. She encouraged students to attend class and recitations to help review the major concepts in class. She was respectful and willing to help anytime. She provided plenty of opportunity to get extra help with the course work. This was shown through her always mentioning having office hours, recitation, questions after class, prompt grading of tests, and she knew everyones name in class which was impressive. She always showed concern over people that got low test scores reminded them that she is available to help and asked what she could do better for them. The recitation sessions she provided for the students was an awesome idea to give the class a common venue to seek more information regarding topics we might now have been able to understand by ourselves. I thought the pacing was good considering the amount of material that was covered. She was always available through e-mail and her office. She answered all questions thoroughly. She was always available for her students. Sent out emails and made sure we understood things when she was explaining. Very sweet teacher that wants everyone to know the subject she teaches very well. Answered questions, emails, and adjusted deadlines depending on class concerns. Setting up recitation for further understanding. She was available for outside help.

Yes. Although I sense that she is newer than most of the professors, she has the passion and the knowledge to teach the subject well. With a few tweaks to her teaching methods, she could easily be among the best. I would recommend her to other students because she's hard but you'll learn a lot and she's really nice. I think that she is a good teacher that is inspired by what she does. I would recommend her because she really wants the students to strive, understand and make the connection to the concepts in the book. She may become a bit confusing, but she posts her powerpoints on Laulima for reference. She also offers recitation sessions twice a week to help you review and ask questions (a T.A. ran the recitations, but he knew what to cover) Yes. I would recommend her because of her passion and concern for the subject. She is also extremely nice and provides resources to succeed. Yes, she creates an atmosphere very conducive to learning in her classroom and provides students ample opportunity to study and understand the topics covered if they are willing to put the time in at recitation. It was hard for me to follow her during lectures. She seemed to talk in circles at time and I would just get lost. I need things to be explained short and concise or I lose attention. She would get caught up on explaining all these little details and I would lose the big picture. If she would have given an overview of the topic and the main points then gone into the details of how something works or operates then I think I could have followed along better. Great teacher! Hoping to have her for BIOL 172. She was often the only source of energy in the class. She gave the class confidence in our ability to understand the material, especially during the more difficult chapters. Great work! Thank you! I think she should use this passion to help her get the information across because the information is what the students need to know. give specific study guides-not broad study guides that merely list every subject in the chapter None that I can think of. None. None Trying a different method besides powerpoint. Her tests are challenging, covering many chapters in one exam. Perhaps testing more frequently on less chapters would help students learn more/better. RESITATION provide more extra credit opportunity Make the study guide more specific. I felt like I could never predict what your tests would be like. I would always focus and spend a lot of time learning a specific topic and then it wouldn't be on the exam. I felt like I knew a lot more than you put on the exam, but I was unable to show you how much I knew. And some questions on the exam, I did not think it was important. For lectures, you make everything in the book hold equal importance. This is okay because I know you want us to learn everything. However, for some things that are not necessary, cover it briefly and focus solely on the important information. This way we can become experts on the important areas, rather than know everything on the surface. I think I forget surface information faster than if it was throughly covered. I don't know though, it is hard because of the amount of time we have to learn everything. Better organization. Better way of presenting the material. Class seemed like a drag. Increase the number of exams and break each exam into 2 or 3 chapters so students can digest the material more easily. faster study guides, longer class with a break in the middle information presented on human systems nothing Make 172 more like 171!! The recitations in 171 were so helpful, even if we couldn't make it to them physically, just having those questions to think about for each chapter made last semester's tests seem so much easier. She gives opportunities for extra credit, so students who maybe didn't do so well on an exam have the chance to make up the points. only someone who already has knowledge of the subjects covered in the course. I certainly would. In her class, you won't be wasting your time memorizing random facts about certain species of invertebrates (that you'll forget about anyway). Instead, she focuses on the major concepts from the chapter, things that can be applied to many situations. Yes, she makes learning biology fun. Yes, because of the good learning environment, and if there are any questions, she's available. yes because of her positive qualities as a teacher that I had mention. Yes Her teaching style is good and interesting. I would recommend her because I do find her classes enjoyable, but I would warn students that she isn't an easy A! yes, she enjoys positively interacting with students Yes I would because Manning is a good teacher. She is really interested in the subject herself so is very passionate and knowledgable. She is very enthusiastic and encouraging She has much information about marine things. Passionate about material and is an activist about what she preaches! Knows a lot about the subject and encourages us to participate. She is talented in many aspects as an instructor. she teaches students in a variety of material such as online videos, guest speakers, labs, and power point. She shows great concern for students and sees the positive in everything. She's really funny and knows her subject area very well. Best marine bio teacher I've ever had. Kenzie's strengths are that she has a natural and joyful persona, that is very helpful for a student like me because I seem very interested in a subject when the teacher is passionate at what he/she does. She also is very knowledgeable about her work and explains as briefly as she can that makes me understand her power points. She's very nice and very patient with her students. Also passionate about science her love for what she teaches. Professor Manning is a fantastic teacher. She is very passionate about her subject and she loves to share her knowledge. It really makes a class even more interesting when the teacher is so enthused and exciting about what they are teaching. She encourages a lot of extra curricular activities and does an excellent job of tying Hawaiian culture into the relevancy of her class. I thoroughly enjoyed taking this course, and I'll definitely try to take another one of her courses in the future! MS.Manning's major strengths involved her great knowledge for marine science and other types of sciences associated with marine biology.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Nothing, the class is great. She could improve he lecture by redirecting ridiculous questions by students for after lecture. One thing that would've helped me would be able to have an example "mini-paper assignment" that students could have looked at. To me the syllabus wasn't clear enough to know what she wanted done on the mini-paper. None I found her style of teaching very easy to follow. n/a. Just to go a little slower on the power points so we can take down all the notes. Just to follow up with our grades Unfortunately there's not enough time to go through all the material so she might need to cut some out.. N/A The only minor change I would say is her reminders for carpooling when students for zoo 200L take field trips.

She would give study guides for exams, go over material carefully and even gave a few extra credit opportunities. she offered help. She asked us how we were doing. She sent emails after tests to ask her for help. She made it very clear throughout the semester that she was there to help us. Mackenzie made her self available to students when she could and got to know each of her students by name. Helped outside class. She is sort of lenient on students and makes sure they are able to get the fullest points they can achieve. She's really lenient with turning in assignments and gives us tips and writes out study guides for us. She always offered help with anything that is misunderstood or concerned with the subject yes At the beginning of the course, she exchanged phone numbers with all of the students and insists that her students email her if they will be absent from class. She likes to know that we are safe. Whenever there is a guest speaker, she informs the class of different opportunities available to the students. Professor Manning always encourages students to come to her office for extra help. On one occasion, she took extra time outside of class to help me. She also went out of her way to help me with my academic goals. Her concerns for students are very flexible to understand the situation and emotions of students if she notices students having a hard time.

Yes, they would learn a lot from her class. Sure, she's quite a character. Yes. She is really nice parson and she has good knowledge about biology. Yes, because she is a good down to earth teacher. Yes this class was really good and when the class is fun learning becomes fun as well and everyone seems to advance together with more ease. Most definately. I have her again Yes, fun class, learn a lot about marine life. Yes, the course is very educational and interesting. At first glace, "Marine Biology" does not sound very appealing, it should be called "Marine Biology by Manning" because she and her class & lab should be recognized by the students at KCC and should be on a top class list to choose from. She reminds me of a pirate haha. Overall, she is a really good instructor and would not mind taking another fun class like this again. She is knowledgeable, passionate about biology, and very encouraging toward students taking advantage of resources to help us succeed. She knew the material very well, and very nice. her passion and knowledge for biology. Professor Manning really knows the subject matter. Very enthusiastic teacher. I can tell she likes biology. Very knowledgeable about subject. When I had questions, I could always count on her to email me back in a timely manner. I thought the recitations were very helpful. I appreciated how she gave us extra credit for going and how she hired a previous students to guide us. Shows that she wants the students to succeed. Passionate and very knowledgeable about subject. She is enthusiastic about the subject. She is friendly and personable and creates a fun learning environment. She is a very nice person, who did put her powerpoints and test material up for us. Know the biology knowlege very well. Very energetic, spunky, and knowledgeable. Mackenzie knows how hard this course is so she offers a lot of help outside of class so her major strengths is that she cares for the students but also stays professional. She makes things interesting by creating hilarious examples/analogies for us to relate the material back to our lives. She is obviously the kind of teacher who honestly cares about her students, as evidenced by the recent adjustments she has made to her course set up. It is refreshing to see a teacher who believes students are capable of succeeding in a course with so much information to be absorbed. She made numerous resources available to us and was always available if further help was needed. I also appreciate how she reads students' faces as she is lecturing, and will go back over things if it seems like people aren't getting the point, instead of just moving on and leaving some students behind. Mackenzie is a very enthusiastic teacher! She's very knowledgeable about her subject and always encourages student participation and engaging in our questions. She sets a comfortable atmosphere for students which allows us to approach her much easier. Enthusiasm, up to date taotaootaotao good teacher. Professor Manning teaches in an interesting and effective way. In addition to lecturing on the material from the book, she also starts debates on related subjects. She provides extra materials for studying for tests, including all PowerPoints from her lectures and practice test questions. She is very enthusiastic about the subject matter and knew her material well. She was also very encouraging when I felt discouraged and she made sure that we all knew she was available if ever we needed help. Knowledge of subject, concern for student understanding of the subject, great personality which made learning "fun." Mackenzie is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter and that brought a great deal of enthusiasm to the class. She is fun. Something about her makes you interested and want to come to class. She is very energentic and enthusiastic. She made the class very fun and entertaining and I learned a lot in this class.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Either make more concise lecture presentations so that we stay on the projected course track, or anticipate having some of the later exams be on later dates in the schedule. No changes none. This course is a 100 level course. It is taught like it is a 300+ level course. There is entirely way too much information covered in a short amount of time. When you are taking a full course load it is extremely difficult to focus on only this class. This course needs some serious restructuring. It doesn't allow you to process and apply the information. By the time you figure it out you are already on the next 5 chapters. This should not be an accelerated course, again it is a 100 level course. For the lectures, emphasize the important aspects of the chapter that you really want us to know. You treat all the information the same. Focus on the harder stuff that you really want to get across. I can read and understand the easy concepts on my own. But its the hard concepts that I want you to spend most of the lecture on. Instead I felt that you just went over everything in the chapters briefly. Sometimes the tests had questions that I felt were not mentioned in lectures. Because she does not emphasize the important information needed to know in the chapters, I would sometimes skip over information that we needed to know on the test. Overall though, the test was based on the recitations so that was good. Focus lectures and tests on main concepts and explain those concepts differently from how it is described in the textbook (ex. use analogies, complex and technical subjects put in layman's terms). Would like lecture material covered written on dry erase board in an outline form rather than the use of powerpoint presentations (forces me to take notes and stay focus in class). More opportunity for extra credit To not reiterate the book so much and to make the powerpoints more in sync with what will be on the test. To write what was wrong on our tests rather than just leaving us with absolutely no where to start. I didn't know if I was being graded fairly or not because I did not know why I was even wrong in the first place. Her note can include more main points of the type under the sub-title and put in more key words for students. A lot of the time student not sure which key words or main by she is looking for on the exam questions. I believe that will help the students more. I think professor manning is a good instructor and very intelligent. My suggestion would be to find some way to split the material up into different semesters. Covering a chapter each class period makes it VERY hard to become strong in biology. None. Slow down, this course goes way too fast in the amount of time we have. I really can't think of anything. She is so open to hearing our opinions, that I feel like any suggestion I may have had was already given to her. Try to post lecture powerpoints a day or two before rather than right before class so that students can go over the lecture beforehand to be prepared for class. More recitation sessions atotoaotaoota I would not suggest any changes; I was happy with everything in the course. Change the exam structure Recitation times/dates could use an improvement. It's a great idea but not everyone can make the times/dates suggested. Although it might be impossible for everyone to make it, I really wish I could have attended more than one session. Although it is not required to attend recitation, I feel it would have helped a lot more for my understanding, but I understand the complication of time and place and other student's schedules. OVERALL IT'S NO "BIGGY." I think it would be beneficial to the students if we could slow the progression down a bit, it's very difficult to digest a chapter a day when it is your first encounter with Biology at the Univeristy level. Instead of covering every detail in the book, maybe focus on the big things.. Maybe do something different with the lectures instead of just going over the powerpoint.

She answered any questions students had, and always reminded us to take advantage of recitation, and to go see her during her office hours, or email her if need be. she was always there through email. She also encourage students to see her in her office if they ever needed to talk/help. always willing to help. Having recitations, and extra help outside of class. Answering emails. She answered questions in class. Postponed tests when necessary. Provided extra credit and recitation sessions. Adjusted exam dates to ensure students had sufficient time to master materials. Made herself available through e-mail and office hours. She would respond to email very quickly. Arrange a teacher assistant to give us recitation session. She always offer help to student. She is very present. She took on extra work so that we would have more resources to learn the material. It was clearly evident that she wanted us to succeed. She offered a lot of help outside of class as well as extra credit opportunities. Well, first of all, she got a Peer Mentor from the STEM center assigned to our class to hold weekly recitation sessions as an alternative studying route. She then thought up around two pages of study questions a week for the recitations, which she made available online ahead of time, so that students who planned on attending could come prepared for discussion. (And students who couldn't make it could also use the questions as a study guide, or meet with the Peer Mentor during his tutoring hours.) She offered a small amount of extra credit as an incentive for attending the recitations, but also showed fairness to students who couldn't attend by assigning an alternative extra cedit assignment. When our class took a little longer than planned in understanding one of the chapters, she moved one of our exams back, so that we could spend another class period going over the material. Each exam we took was graded very promptly, and she even emailed us a graph of class scores over time, for each one. She was always quick in responding to emails and very helpful and understanding when she needed to be. She always encourages students to email her or stop by her office with any questions or concerns regarding any content of the course, test scores, etc. Reminders, reviews, slides taotaootaotoa Professor Manning, in addition to providing studying materials, also organizes recitation sessions for her students. These help students review the material, and also give students a chance for extra credit. By encouraging and trying to motivate us. She made clear that she was available through office hours and e-mail. Ms. Manning made sure we understood the subject/topics, and if not she would always let us know of her availability and not to hesitate to ask for help. Mackenzie offered students many opportunities for extra credit, and also set up resources outside of class such as recirations to help the class study togehter. She provided tutoring for students, always reminded us of her office hours, and gave advice to better ourself after every exam. Honestly, if you take her class there's no excuse why one shouldn't do well.. She always asked if there were any questions during her lecture and after classes. She also set up a recitation for us so that we are more involved with the subject.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes. She is passionate and makes learning the material cool. She's always open, and she even tells you about opportunities for working in the science field in internships and the like. Yes i would, intense course but very interesting. YES! Yes because overall good teacher. I would because she knows a lot about biology and she is a good lecturer. No, I would not. She does not know the subject material well enough to reword it in a different and understandable way. Also, I did feel that I was not intelligent in this class and it would not help when I would go to her after my test was graded, and she would just point out where the answers were. It's not just the answers that make someone understand, it's explaining why I was wrong, and the ability to guide me into the right direction for the next test. She would not do that and it left me feeling very frustrated. No commend on this point. I depend on that person study style. YES! If you do your share, there is no reason why you should not do well in this "weeder" class. I would highly recommend Mackenzie to others because she is super cool and down to earth. She knows how to relate to the students and make the course easier to understand. OF COURSE!!! Because she is definitely one of the best professors I've had at KCC (...and it's my 3rd year here, so I have had quite a few.) As I mentioned before, she makes an impossible course doable. I'm taking her 172 course next semester even though it's in the late afternoon and I strongly dislike being in school at that time! Definitely. Mackenzie is a very bright professor who wants to pass her love of biology on to her students. yes, not boring taotoaota I would recommend Professor Manning to students who actually need to learn biology. Her class ensures that you actually understand the material; her tests do not have very many multiple choice questions, instead consisting mainly of questions that ask you to write a paragraph or two about the question. However, for someone who is looking for an easy A, I would not recommend her class. Yes, because she made the subject very interesting and she was always enthusiastic. Yes, because she knows how to teach her subject very well; and if you don't understand she will try her best to help. Yes, I would recommend Mackenzie if someone is up to the challenge of the class itself. The course is face paced and can't slack or fall behind. everyone i know that needs this class. This is a hard course and she has been very helpful. Yes because she's not like all the other boring professors. She's fun and knows her subject quite well.

=0) No, because the class is taught entirely way too fast and it doesn't relate well to students. The lectures do not help because many of the things that were presented in class were not on the test and would not be clear. I could study on my own and do better than attending class. She is a very nice teacher. She makes biology fun. She's a great teacher. It's a very difficult class to teach because of the vast amount of content, but she does a very good job in teaching the most important points rather than skimming the entire book and testing on random concepts. Thanks! Please restructure this class. For students trying to get into med school or other programs we need necessary grades and this class makes it extremely difficult to keep up your GPA. If you only take this class by itself you can handle it, but that isn't realistic. Try to talk to other teachers for tips on how to handle how to present this course material. The instructor's major strenths as a teacher were finding ways to relate the material in simpler ways. The way she talked about it, made it easier to understand. Informing students of what materials will be covered in exams and the ease with which she lectured. patience Very enthusiastic with subject area, attempted to make class as interesting as possible. she was very knowledgable about course material and was very nice. extensive knowledge of the subject area. explains topics in a simple easy to relate kinda way She kept things upbeat and very enthusiastic which helped to keep my attention during class. I don't think anything should be changed, other than more extra creidt. (She did give us a lot already, but more couldn't hurt. =)) The teaching way. Do not just show the powpoint to students,try to show the steps on the board and explain. The test format is fine, but sometimes the written parts are too time-consuming, I feel pressure and rush with the exams. The difficulty is reasonable, everything on the exams are covered in class, but there just enough time for the exam (no spare time to double check answers). go a little slower none Better powerpoints so that we had a better focus on the subject (not whole sentences that provided the lecture, but something more thorough and not too broad). none Focus class on what subjects will be tested on. The lectures did not help with the exams. I feel like the information was made to sound more simple than it really is. It felt like the big concepts and ideas in the book where not communicated clearly or detailed. I would add in class group activities and discussions giving the students the opportunity to instruct each other. It seems like interactive class is more productive academically. the way of the test.... it is little bit hard because we had to memorize all the things.. because it is not mltiple choices problems, there are no asny hints on the tests. Nothing, keep everything the same. while the unbound book was a good idea, the pages were very thin and could tear very esaily in the binder so maybe the bound book would be better. or a choice between the two? If it possible to shorten the chapters for each exam, it will be helpful and concentrate more on certain materials.

She showed her concern for the students by encourging us to come to office hours. Allowing extra credit and posting assignments online Encourage questions and class participation, remind us of her office and office hours. always checking to make sure we understood what she was teaching. provided extra credit and study guides She always made an approachable environment that made you feel comfortable to talk to her about any concerns. She always said to talk to her and made herself easy to talk to. By keeping the class informed of extra credit opportunities ahead and answering a student's quesion to the best of her knowledge; and not giving up on a question she didn't know. She even mentioned to the class how to succeeed. gave specific recommendations to those not doing well in the class; was available during office hours she would ask students if they are not doing well in the course, she offer opportunity like extra credit to help bring up your grade. she is always open to listen, and she always answered questions that students had about exams or difficult problems

Yes, I would recomment this instructor to other students because she's funny. Yes, I learned the material. Yes,because she will let students know the study area of the subject. Yes, but they would have to be prepared to do a lot of reading and a lot writing during exams. Definitely. She is a great instructor that explains the material and how it applies to everyday life. She actually teaches the material and has a passion for the area of study, and those are very powerful things that must be present in the learning environment. The tests are good, if you study really hard. I personally think that there should be more multipule choice. This course is requested students learn 27 chapters, if students only need to learn 19 chapters, students will have more time to learn. Too much material covered in one semester (27 chapters in 16 weeks!) Being a little more specific about the powerpoints but not too specific. Perhaps a few pre-quizes that wouldn't be detrimental to the overall grade, to see if the material is being understood by the students of the class. But it's not necessary... There is just a lot of material to go over in only a semester. More multiple choice question on the exam and less short answer would be good. Someone may communicate their way of understanding a topic differently than the instructor. Multiple choice questions leave less room for error. Short answer questions should challenge the student to think about a situation. The picture drawing portion of the test is a great idea. I dont think this course needs to be improved. Sometimes things seemed kind of rushed going thru a chapter per session, but I understand that there's a lot to cover, and the teacher made it clear what we needed to know for the tests.

More lab classes. That's it, everything seemed to be run very well in the labs. I think it could be a much more dynamic lab if we were encouraged/required to switch up lab partners each week. n/a None let the students into the next biology lab next semester who were in this lab this semester so they can continue on with the same instructor none Some of the labs took longer than the time allotted for the course. Suggest allowing for an extension or cutting the labs down so they can be completed in a reasonable time. she is really awesome. There should be no changes to the instructor.

Was always walking around during lab to see if students were doing experiments correctly, or just seeing if any students had any questions. Was always available to answer questions. makes sure all students understand the lab procedures, objectives and results. Provided help during lab feedback Making rounds during lab, assuring that the students are on the right track. asking students question she knew who was missing she always asked about someone if they were, she knew us by name. Weekly emails telling us what to expect for the next assignment. She showed concern by understanding individual's emergency situations which led them to miss class. But she let them know what she would be talking about for that class and also inform them on any homework assignments.

20. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes, very much. Highly energetic which made class fun, and very knowledgeable of material. Easy to talk to, and is always willing to help. Although there is a lot of writing, it does help with knowing beforehand what the lab is all about. Yes I would recommend this instructor because I felt the labs helped me gain a better understanding of the concepts being taught in lecture. Yes, she was very personable and kept a good classroom atmosphere. yes, because you learn a lot and have fun at the same time. Yes, good teacher. Larger class sizes, allows for more students. not so much lab reports! they were just a recap of what we already did. it did not really assist my learning because it is just going over what i had already did. More funding to buy additional equipments like the electrospectrometer. None Cockroach control. none lab equipment worked well, but the age of them shows. the lab area itself seemed cluttered. and the set up left little space for walk ways. Refer to comments made on #19. it is pretty good class.i love it The laboratory doesn't need any improvement. Some of the labs were really long and difficult to finish during lab time. If everything went perfectly and was already completely understood before the lab started, it would've been fine, but things often don't work out that way. Also since some of the labs were so long, writing out the procedures in the lab reports was kind of annoying.

I think that that class was great overall, no improvement necessary. The best instructors I've had are able to manipulate the classroom dynamic by keeping everyone on their toes - rather than asking the class a question as a whole, calling out to individuals. They encourage participation and preparation by putting students on the spot and expecting them to come up with an intelligent response. The main weakness I saw in the classroom was a lack of verbal response from the class, even though most students seemed to have sufficiently studied the day's lab. be more organized and stay on pace(time management); not read from the book; focus on what's more important, don't try to cover every little thing in the book it's general biology; make study guides more narrowed in topics; have more little test if you're going to have detailed test; allow more time for testing (too many questions for the class period); use of the testing center would be great; if using ppt email before class or make available at beginning of semester in bookstore; know more than just what students are able to read in the text Perhaps be a little more ready for class, as far as having the equipment set up on time, but other than that, she was great. I would suggest moving away from so much of power points and utilize the board more drawing out concepts. handing out the study guide a little sooner to give more time to prepare for the test less chapters covered for test 3 She doesn't need to make any changes. Since the subject matter was so intricate it would have been better for me personally to have had more tests on maybe 3-4 chapters instead of numerous chapters and less tests. I found that it was very hard for me to grasp the subject matter thoroughly when I was trying to memorize soooo much material. None

answer questions to best of ability; when students had time conflicts allowed students to turn in HW later I think she did a great job in listening to the students, talking with them after class and having them come to her office if they needed to speak to her more. She would spend alot of time answering questions in debt and seeing that we were satisfied with these explanations. allowing time to ask questions during lecture answered all questions thoughtfully, expressed eagerness to accommodate any questions outside of class time She made sure that every child understood everything necessary for the other Biology classes in the future. She was very good with the students. she was very accomodating and understanding to my personal needs and dates that I was going to be absent. If anyone had extra questions she did not hesitate to find the answers for the next class session. She always asked us if we understood the material and made us ask questions if we didn't

no, didn't feel like she had a lot of background knowledge on general biology; focus seemed to be more in marine biology; teaches right out of the book; covers a lot of unnecessary topics; good for audio learners mostly (doesn't fit my learning style) Definitely! I was very glad to have her as my teacher. I learned a lot and the learning environment was very positive. definately yes because the subject matter is taught with enthusiasm encouraging students to stay active and learn yes. made biology interesting and fun Yes! topics are more focused; more group discussion of the material(reading should be done as HW); bring in outside sources to support what text says; assignments to encourage and prepare for tests (material that is testable) More time should be used to illustrate the most important aspects of each chapter rather than the whole chapter. Furthermore I think that there should be more questions directed at the students throughout lecture. This course could be improved if it had small quizzes and smaller tests.

make the class writing intensive use less time explaining what is to be done for the day(need more time to do lab), students should be expected to have read lab and know what to do; reduce the amount of writing required (especially for 1 credit course); guest speaker (plant lady) for campus plant tour lab A little too flexible and understanding of students situations none. none Time management I felt that the writing that was required took far too long. The write ups were very lengthy and this class should be considered a writing intensive class.

no b/c her lab felt like a writing intensive and yet the class isnt. Yes. Ohai's rambling can change peoples lives. yes, makes class fun and interesting; light-heart and enjoys a good laugh; trys to put concepts in different perspectives if made known that the concept wasn't understood the first time; gives daily life application when possible Yes. The lab was lots of fun. It helped to reinforce what was learned in class. Plus you can't beat the hands on experience. She is really excited about the field of biology and fascinated with what we are doing in the lab. It really helps to get students excited themselves. Yes Yes. I really learned a lot. I am very satisfied. yes, great lab instructor! Yes because her class was pretty understandable. I didn't have any problems really with her definately because you will work hard and learn alot about biology.

n/a We disparately need a proper lab so that we explore more La'au lapa'au practices. sharper knives and scalpels would greatly assist in cutting when dissecting; improved ventilation for dissecting; more than 2 stations for washing and cleaning instruments; more microscopes (especially for large classes) I think the Lab was very well set up for every experiment, we had all the equipment that we needed. Newer slides that aren't bleached. Better microscopes. More bench space n/a Some of the labs were really lengthy to get done so shortening some of them.

If possible more field time and a better lab to work in instead of the hale. less writing and more discovering; not have a lab(2+ hours long) during lunch hours, makes it hard to focus Maybe for the dissections having a diagram on the tests to show what we learned. n/a Less writing of the procedures and more of a true lab notebook where you just write out observations it seemed too redundant to take all the procedures and write them out when they are already printed in Lab text.
