13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Very passionate about the subject. Her passion helped me understand things a lot more.
Very friendly
She is clear on her lectures and she makes it easy to understand by always giving examples or relating that something she's talking of to everyday scenarios.
She is as smart, but maybe not as strong, as Spider-Man.
She make sure student understanding the lecture before she move to other section. She is willing answer any question from us.
Knows the material, very ethusiastic and explains thing very good.
She knows her stuff
Manning's major strength was that she was knowledgeable about the topics being taught. She encouraged her student to participate and really understand the material that was being taught. She is a very approachable person.
Professor Manning was very knowledgable in what she teaches and is very enthusiastic with her lectures which draws students in to participate and listen.
Mackenzie is very specific with her lectures and what will be on the exams.
She really knows the subject she teaches. She was engaging and made class fun! I also liked how she graded and posted exam scores within a few days of taking the tests.
Very intelligent and knowledgable in her field. Always made sure our questions were answered
Very amiable character, easy to understand and feel at ease with; great teacher to approach!
She knew the material very well. On top of that, she was very passionate about the subject. This made learning about it very interesting and in some cases entertaining.
answer questions for students
Approachable.
Very enthusiastic while teaching. Gives many studying resources such as the recitation worksheets, powerpoints, and text.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Not test on so many chapters at once. Expecting us to take an exam on a chapter we learned about a month ago was very challenging.
Try not to rush at the end of lectures to finish up the powerpoint slides, carry on to the next lecture.
Her exams were long and time consuming and mostly composed of short answer. I would prefer switching to multiple choice and maybe some short answers in the future so that students may have time to think and and not to worry to much into finishing the Exam. Also I like the fact she has recitations every week, but the student who goes over recitation is so BORING and at times can't answer simple questions pertaining to the chapter. Sometimes I feel that he has no interest in the subject and just one hurry up recitation so we can all leave. My advice is to find a more enthusiastic and knowledgeable student to lead recitation for next semester. Other than these suggestions, I think Professor Manning is did a wonderful job in structuring the class.
Just nitpicky, but it was Henrietta Lack's cervical cancer cells, not breast cancer cells, that became immortal. And try to find a different room to teach in. This one smells like mold and stink students.
No.
none.
More hands on
Making recitation answer available to students if the mentor misses a session.
I would say there is too much information to learn in one class sitting so I believe the recitation is a very good technique to refresh and retain the information from the lecture.
None.
Stronger points on concepts. Some stuff was hard to grasp, but she didn't spend a lot of time covering them.
Just be a little bit more organized with the inclusion/exclusion of chapters.
Nothing! She was fabulous. The organization of the lectures were a bit skewed due to problems with the testing center. This caused some confusion and panic throughout the class, but it was not her fault.
grade every lab
To reply to all student inquiries through email. Some are not able to meet her during her office hours
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Encouraged us to go to class all the time. Go to recitation sheets. Always offered her office to us as well.
Ask if there are any questions.
Office hours outside class time and she really does take the time to make sure EVERYONE in class is clear with the material before moving on with the next topic. I like the fact that she advice us to stand up and stretch when she senses if the aura of the class is in a rest and digest mode because she knows this is contagious. This is nice because we get an uplifting energetic vibe after the stretching.
She made extra credit available.
She has recitation sheet which make up main ideas for each section. If you follow, you will do well in exam.
asked questions
She was very interactive with the class. She stressed the issue of coming to class so that we can be more familiar with the material instead of just reading it. She encouraged us to come to her office hours if we had questions or concerns.
After every different topic, she asks the class if everyone is comfortable with it.
By having a former student teach her recitation class and always encouraging her students to attend these classes.
She made herself available during office hours and even outside of office hours. She replied to emails and really encouraged the students to come to class.
Provided us with tutors, always asked us questions, allowed us to think for ourselves.
Like I said, very easy to get along with, a very friendly and approachable character! It doesn't take long to get on conversational level with Mackenzie!
She was always checking with us to make sure we understood the material. When there wasn't enough time to finish a chapter, she would omit it rather than making her students study it on their own.
answered questions and took time for us to understand material
Somewhat. I know a lot of students did not do well on assignments and definitely not well on tests but I did not see much concern only sympathy. Only one extra credit assignment was given even though more was asked. Also no curve, unlike other professors.
She made sure everyone was prepared. She encouraged everyone to come to class because there is a lot of material to learn. Recitation worksheets were a highly encouraged study tool for the exams.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would recommend her if they want a challenge in the subject.
Yes because she's very lively and helpful with material.
Yes, because it all comes down how well you deliver your lecture for student to get a grasp of the topic. I think she did well with this because I learned a lot about BIO in taking her class.
Yeah. Can lern stuff good from her.
Yes, i would. She is a good teacher.
yes she is great
I would recommend her to students. I have heard that Manning is a hard teacher but I feel that I have learned a lot from this class.S Manning didn't just teach us the material but she wanted to make sure we understood it and related it to everyday life.
Yes I would. If you are really into biology and want to learn more, she is the teacher to take.
Yes. Best teacher hands down.
Yes. She knows Biology and makes it fun!
Yes because she makes things sound very intriguing.
Definitely! Clear on concepts; knows how to prepare students for the next levels of biology; Helpful and available, will work with the student!
Yes! Because she a great teacher, organized, fair, and fun.
yes
I would suggest a different instructor. One who is more available through email.
Yes, she was a very good instructor that kept the class involved and engaged during lectures.
Not for international student like me because her exams consists of alot of writing and what I heard about Tina's exams are easier.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Thank you very much.
Happy Holidays!
Nice tats.
nice friendly always smiling
She is a really great teacher and is really enthusiastic about teaching biology.
I believe that Professor Manning should have in class reviews before tests so that we know what to expect rather than just studying straight from the recitation worksheets.
Her exams are hard.
Nothing.
Great teacher!
Nothing
I wanted more organized and goes on with schedule.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
MacKenzie has a great energy in class. She is well versed in the content she is teaching and her excitement about the class content inspires excitement in her students.
great teacher, she really understand the subject.
She has clear standards but is flexible enough to work with students when issues arise, she doesn't get hung up on the details.
MacKenzie truly knows the subject matter of Biology, and has a set system down for her lab that makes it run pretty smoothly. She knows all her labs and how to precisely time her lecture and our experimenting time evenly, so we get everything done. Quizzing on the upcoming labs was a better learning experience than the labs that test the following week on a previous lab. Kenzie's a pro, and requires a lot of writing in her lab reports, so if you're serious into Biology or science, she's the right choice! If you're lazy and want to get an easy grade, don't take her.
very enthusiastic and makes learning fun.
A strong point is that she is enthusiastic about science and her expectations of her students leads us to a greater understanding.
Manning really new her subject and was there for her students whenever we needed help.
She's a very good teacher that knows her materials
She is very open and easy to approach, highly knowledgable, no judgemental, shows care for students, and is really concerned about making the material understandable.
knew material very well
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Change some of the labs, I will use more the microscope.
She could be a little clearer in some of the procedures in Labs, or go through them a little more in depth, but things always seemed to work out. She would be walking around to answer questions if we had them.
none that I can think of
Writing intensive credit. Group quizzes. I really wish it were possible to have two meetings a week in order to deliver the curriculum because it is very extensive.
Maybe have all the lab reports we turn in be graded. It's devastating knowing we worked hard on all of the lab reports and only 5 of them were actually graded.
Less workload for this lab class. This is a 1 credit class and I put in so much work for this class. I spent more time doing the lab reports than I spent studying for my BIO 171 lecture class and that's a 3 credit class. I just felt that the workload was over the top for a 1 credit class. For the amount of work we did in this class, this class should have been a 2 credit class.
Not much!
none
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
MacKenzie was always available during office hours, and was more than willing to find time for students outside of those office hours. She wanted students to succeed, and she was willing to assist in any way that she could.
She made sure to check on all the groups in lab to see if everyone was coming along in their labwork, she also made accomodations for students that were sick or had other responsibilities that conflicted with class.
She would always be walking around from group to group to help out if needed, and would always e-mail back if I had a question!
Tested us and always offered here help
She doesn't take it easy on her students ensuring that the ones that are hungry for the A or enthusiastic about science gain a greater understanding.
She made sure most students were in class before handing on the quizzes, was nice to students if they needed some more time to finish assignments.
She would comment on our reports and suggest us to visit her during office hours
Always explained things thoroughly, always there to help if confused, very lenient.
answered questions in class
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Absolutely. She gets students excited about the content she is teaching. She is inspiring and she is willing to help students succeed in any way that she can. Her energy is contagious.
If the student is a serious science student, who wants to test themselves, and write serious lab reports weekly, and prove their worth as a budding scientist, take her. She knows her stuff, is very excited about it, and will grade your reports critically. If you want an easier passage through this lab, take one of the other teachers.
yes I would because she makes the lab fun and explains realy well
Yes if you have great time management and you really want to gain understanding. No if you want an easy 1 credit lab.
Yes, she very nice and super enthusiastic!
yes, because overall she may be a tough teacher, she knows her materials and explains the materials very well.
Yes! Great learning environment, and she really encourage you to think outside the box.
yes gave outside help
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Yes, she made labs fun informative.
She's got a great personality, really down to earth and excited about her subject matter. KCC is lucky to have a teacher like her.
She is a great biology techer and is always there for questions.
She's a good teacher. I think that students enthusiastic for science will thrive in her classroom.
Nothing.
She's awesome!

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Biology
She was energetic and ready to teach
very enthusiastic and has a lot of knowledge about subject.and makes it easy to understand and relatable to everyday life.
she knew well about her major area
She is very good at teaching biology and making it interesting.
She was very informative about the marine section of the course. She was also enthusiastic when teaching about the different sections. Although she mentioned some sections like the human anatomy section was not her forte, the lectures were still very informative and I was able to grasp what she wanted us to learn
I love how energetic she is everytime she gives lecture. This really shows how much she loves the subject she is talking about and also shows how much she wants her students to learn what she is talking about by making it fun.
She brings a great vibe to the class. Because she is so interested in what she is teaching, it helps students be engaged in the lecture.
teaching us about plants and animals
MacKenzie is very thoughtful and truly cares for her students to pass and gasp the concepts being presented. She's very open to meeting students outside of class. Lectures are interesting and far from boring with the video clips being presented.
Showed a passion for her interest and knowledge of the subject matter
Explaining the topi outside of the slideshows in lecture was helpful to get more insight on the subject. She elaborated on difficult sections of each chapter and tried to help students visualize what is actually going on through watching motion pictures. Very positive attitude and classroom.
She is very smart and good at teaching. She encourages and facilitates learning via her lectures and her exams. I really appreciate her as a professor for her ability to share her knowledge in a straight-forward way (unlike many professors who are "too smart" to teach well). She has a good general knowledge of science as a discipline, along with general biology, even though it is not her focus. She gives great examples and explains certain concepts better than the book does. She is one of those professor that fascinates you with how much she knows off the top of her head.
clear presentation
organized and easy to understand her lecture
Made the material easy to comprehend.
Professor Manning is very passionate about her subject area and it really shows through in her teaching. It makes the subject matter relevant to the students which aids in better understanding of the material.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
no change, I like the way she is teaching me now
Stop making your test so hard. There were so many fill in the blank questions that made me not care about how well I did in this class.
maybe more instruction for the tests or review
None
I wouldn't change it, I enjoyed the class and so far she has been one of my favorite professors.
So far i can't think of one.
nothing
Nothing!
No changes. I enjoy the course outline and how the chapters are 1-2 a week. I also enjoy homework being due every sunday night because it makes it easy to remember.
Teach upper division.
add review section
nothing
Have her put the slide numbers on her power points., so I can refer back to the slide on my notes.
I can't think of anything that needs changing.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She helped me to understand some concepts by spending her time to discuss with me a lot
yes I felt like she was pretty caring and if you reached out she would help you.she also knows peoples names which is rare for a professor to take the time to do that
she is easygoing and so welcome student to ask her question
If students missed the exam she allowed for a makeup.
She seemed fair to students and if there was ever a student in class with a question she made sure that there question was answered.
She is good in responding for email and really go out of her way to answer questions that students have for her.
giving us a study guide for the exam
She allows students to contact her outside of class whether it is by email or in her office. She quickly responds to emails as well.
She encouraged them to go to stem center and/or would send emails.
She is available outside of class and is willing to adjust her lecture to fit the students needs (i.e. speed). She understands the strife of a student better than most professors I have taken.
questions
really good
Yes, she told us to see her if we have questions.
Professor Manning showed concern for students by making sure we understood the material and by providing study sheets to help us prepare for exams.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, of course. She is a very good instructor
I'm neutral on this
yes, very fun class great teacher not only knows the subject but knows how to teach it.

Yes! She contains almost all the characteristics that a true teacher should have.
Yes, great learning environment. Great teacher
yes because she can teach the subject and really shows an interest in it
definitely yes! I feel Mackenzie is one of the best professors I had. She shows concerns for her students and truly wants them to succeed in this class and all areas of life.
Yes, the structure in class is well balanced throughout the semester and her tests help you learn to think about the material critically and not just memorize the chapters terms.
Yes, and for all the reasons above.
yes
yes, i will. she is great teacher
Yes, because has concerns for her students.
Yes, I would recommend Professor Manning to other students because she makes the subject area interesting and relevant to you. This helps to make it easier to learn and retain.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
When I have biology class, every single time class I have a very great lecture
I wish you taught 265
make exam easier
I like her, she was enthusiastic about the class which in turn had me excited. Even during the plant lectures which were the most boring to me, she tried to make it sound interesting.
Keep up YOUR good work Dr. Manning!
Although biology is a tough subject, Mackenzie makes it interesting to learn. She does not make things boring and does not strictly read of the power points as some professors do.
I enjoyed the classes Ive had with her and would recommend her to other students.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She's a good teacher.
Professor Manning is a very fun teacher. During lab, she comes around to help out students and makes sure they understand what is really going on. She explains things clearly and thoroughly
Know her subject well and try to explain the materials in a clear and effective way as she can.
biology
Made learning fun!
She is very nice and helpful I enjoyed her enthusiasm for the subject.
Professor Manning shows a lot of interest in the subject area and she helps to get students to appreciate how amazing some of it is.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Teach upper division.
nothing.
Can we do something else instead of doing the field ecology lab?
no change
The only suggestion I would make is trying to allow for an extra lab day to put together presentations for the ecology stream lab. Our group was not able to meet up outside of class because of everyone's different schedules and I think that this greatly affected how well we did.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She is approachable and kind. Very informative and clear. Helps when needed.
She comes around during lab to make sure students understand the lab. She makes sure so students can do well in lecture. She responds quickly to emails and is willing to meet outside of class for further help.
Available after class, outside of class and anytime if possible by appointment. She encourages students to cooperate as a group and making us come to class preparing and having the materials read.
she help me and my classmates during the lab
She always let us have extra time if we needed it to finish our labs.
Professor Manning walked around the lab and stopped by each group to make sure we were looking and finding what we had to at several occasions during each lab.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes.
Yes. Professor Manning is very helpful. She's better than the professor I have taken in biology 171. She has great knowledge with the subject
Absolutely yes. She did a good job of being a good and knowledgeable teacher. She showed concerns for her students and expected them to know things that she has been taught.
yes, take her lab is very interesting
Yes! She has a bright personality which made me want to attend her class every week
Yes she is a wonderful teacher and I enjoyed her class.
Yes, I would recommend Professor Manning to other students because she knows her subject area really well and she is always willing to help.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Nothing.
Manning is a great professor. There is nothing to change about this course. She grades very fair and helps you write lab reports well.
Good and caring teacher. She doesn't want to fail her students that's why she drops 1 out of the 11 quizzes so I think that's a nice thing of her to do.
great instructor and professor

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Her enthusiasm and approachability are refreshing qualities in a college professor. I've taken every course she's offered at KCC and I can honestly say that I've learned more from her than from any other professor or teacher in my years from high school through where I am now in college. She's inspiring and thoughtful and genuinely interesting to listen to.
Clear direction, effective communication on a student level
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
This class was different, and not quite what I expected. Because it is such a long class, I think it would be cool to have it in a different room where drinks and snacks are allowed!
there was a lot of required text to read
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She's always available to answer questions and she honestly wants her students to do well. She's well connected in the marine biology community and she's been so helpful to me personally.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Absolutely! She is excited about her subject and that reflects in her lessons. She teaches concepts rather than facts and promotes understanding the bigger picture rather than several little concepts.
yes, she connects well and communicates at a student level
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
She's my favorite professor at KCC and I wish she taught higher level biology and marine biology courses. I've learned a lot from her and she is motivating. I'm really glad I met her, because I know she takes an interest in her student's future and wants only the best for them. She sends me information that is relevant to my major interests and tries to help her students network within the science community. That is so rare in a professor. I'm going to miss taking her courses!
18. Other comments:
She's an exceptional professor and this was a really unique course. I had no idea about how to teach others going into it, and now I feel like I can give better presentations in my classes and articulate information in a more concise way. This is a really cool course and I'm glad I took it!

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She has many. (1) She is excellent at presenting difficult and complex material in a organized and understandable way. (2) She is very passionate about the subject, which is motivating and encouraging in itself. (3) She is kind and pleasant towards her students, and very down-to-earth. (4) She grades fairly, based on what she tells you will be on the exam. All around, shes a good teacher.
She is a very friendly and approachable teacher. She tries her best to make concepts easier to understand. She's very enthusiastic and encouraging.
Upbeat, clear explanations, interesting.
Being friendly overall and not taking it to heart when the class doesn't respond sometimes to her prompts or concept questions.
She is knowledgeable of the subject area and could answer most questions given to her. She gave us many opportunities and reminded us of the recitations each week. She was enthusiastic about her class and made everyone else feel good about it as well. The class was small, but she worked with us well.
Professor Manning has a well organized classroom environment. Her class resources are easily accessible online and are viewable prior to class. She keeps her students updated as well.
Ms. Manning's major strengths are her compassion, passion, liveliness, knowledge, and great teaching capabilities. She is an amazing instructor that can truly get you to love a subject and want to be more involved in it. Ms. Manning makes me want to maybe major in Biology as well because there is so much going on that I truly fell in love.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Go teach at UH too.
I would suggest that she go more into dept with the lectures. Her lectures were somewhat general. It gave an idea of what the exam was going to be on, but it didn't help much with exam questions.
Nothing much really. The last recommendation about the supplemental recorded lectures is ok, but that shouldn't be a substitute for not going to class as I have been guilty of on several occasions.
I would only suggest being available for meeting outside of class more often. This could have just been an unfortunate thing, so I don't think their's much to change. At first I would have suggested making the test more of a selected response test, but as I learned to study I understood why the test was more of a constructed response test.
N/A
There is no changes I would suggest because she is amazing and I love her teaching. I wish more teachers were like her.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She always check in to make sure we were alright with her pace and what not. She is very involved in the lab (goes out of her way to assay stuff and ensure connection between lecture and lab). Encourages the class to participate by asking question to check understanding. Records lectures when she is out of town. Asks the class if she should do this and that for her students (ex. "should I record my lectures all the time for your review and for those who don't come to class?"). All around, she has very genuine concern for her students.
I've heard that she allows some extra days for students to take exams. She helps as much as she can with questions that you may have. Her office hours are fair. She always stresses that if you need help, just go to see her during her office hours or email her. She gave me some slack on online homework which I thought was nice of her.
Recitation sessions.
Giving us every chance to succeed but only of our own volition.
She made recitation sessions available outside of class
Ms. Manning always tries to help her students in anyway possible to grasp the material because she wants us to do well in her course. She offers us her time as well as recitation sessions to help us master the material even better.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes. For the reasons above.
I would strongly recommend her. Her class may be tough, but you get what you put into it. She is very helpful, but everything ultimately comes down on how much you study for her course. I enjoyed her teaching style.
Yes, she's a good professor that provides multiple different ways for students to understand the material.
I definitely would.
Yes I would recommend Manning to students because of her passion for the class. It gives other students the same passion.
Yes because she is a well organized teacher and is easy to understand and follow along.
I would recommend her to all students for Biology because she is amazing and great. Her capabilities are what pushes and models students to do exceptionally well in courses.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
She cool as a snow cone.
I really enjoyed being in her class, but the only concern I had was about exam dates. She gave extensions to students. She usually gives you from tuesday until thursday to take the exam. I stayed up all night studying for a test, and I heard that some people have not yet taken the test yet. I felt that was kind of unfair that she had given students up to two extra weeks to study for the test. When I was given the option to take the exam within the week I followed through with it. I didn't know that we had the option of talking to the teacher and rescheduling our test dates. If I knew that ahead of time, I think a couple more days of studying would vastly help my test scores. So my only concern was that she gave students extra time to study, I felt that was unfair.
You are awesome!
I hope that I can do well in all my classes with her because she is great!!! I want to one day be a scientist like her that has traveled the world and been able to do all that she has accomplished in her life.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
she knew the subject area
She is very passionate about her subject, which makes for a more conducive learning environment.
She's very smart
Her strengths as a teacher are being to explain the materials and help students in her office hour.
She is very enthused about the subject matter and therefore explains it well. She takes very complicated concepts and breaks them down into easily understandable ideas.
She knows her material and is very involved in the field of Biology. She is enough of an expert to answer any and all questions we may have.
mackenzie is super cute and i really like how she trys to help students use biology to have a greater appreciation for life
Professor knows what she want us to learn well.
Seems like she loves teaching which is always a plus. She makes biology interesting and fun. Learned a lot of interesting fact on the side.
Her enthusiasm in teaching this subject. You can tell she's a great instructor because her exams are not all multiple choice, there are short answers, t/f, m/c, fill in blanks, diagrams, etc. Thanks for doing that!
Gives great lectures, has a lot of energy and enthusiasm about biology.
enthusiastic about the subject, knowledgeable on subject
The thing that i loved the most about her teaching is that she is very passionate about her subject. It really resonates to the overall learning experience
Has an enthusiasm for what shes teaching, especially for the environmentally related topics.
she is very intellegent in all subjects
She is very knowledgeable on the material that she teaches. Was always happy to help or go over information out of class.
Great lecturer, friendly, and creates an atmosphere conducive of learning.
Enthusiastic, supportive for students' concerns and needs, taught a lot of material in one semester in a smart and effective way
Mackenzie inspires her students to think about the importance of biology and especially about the impact humans have on the planet. She's so passionate about her subject, about Hawaii, and about Hawaii's biodiversity. She's an excellent teacher and I only hope that I can take more of her classes in the future.
Her passion in teaching Biology is her strongest point. Also, her lecture was very organized and easy to understand. Her simple, easy, actual-life-related examples were very helpful for our understanding.
She is very open and easy to talk to. If you have a question regarding the material she is more then happy to assist you.
-Can be easily approached with questions about the course -Teaches material well -Uses powerpoints and videos effectively to present ideas
She knows the content of the class very well and explains difficult concepts in ways that are easy to understand. Uses lots of examples when explaining a certain concept, which is very helpful.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
the study guide should be more specific and exams should have at least an extra credit question
She should make the exam similar to the study guide that she was given. I study well on the study guide but when exam comes it looks different from the study guide so many questions I do not know how to address it correctly.
Making a study group session during office hours each week to review the content of the lectures would be very helpful in this class.
She could maybe slow down when explaining. She may be in a rush due to time constraints which is no fault of her's but if there is any way possible for her to be clear, that would help.
nothing! well, KCC needs better internet so that her videos play better
the class is too fast. also a lot of material is described, therefore it is hard to find where the focus is.
Nothing.
Maybe offer 2 extra credit assignments versus one.
None
nothing. good job!
TRy not to lecture ahead of your slides.
nothing it as a great class
No changes needed
All tests should be taken in the testing center, because timing is more flexible for the students that way. More videos and pictures during lectures. If possible, a picture or video for each process or idea or structure being discussed. Words seem to make less of an impact than pictures and videos.
Exams could've been better managed (many students couldn't finish them on time during the semester).
none
Nothing really. She is an awesome teacher and always encourages her students to do well!
It would be more helpful, if she provided the study materials (ppt slides) a little more earlier. About homework, I did not see much connection and effectiveness of the homework with her exams and lecture. It was fun doing the homework, but it will be more effective if she put homework that is closely related to the exams and/or topics that she wants students to understand well and more. About the exams, some questions were a little confusing, so it would be nicer if she could make it more simple. Also, some questions were focusing on very small details, but some questions were too general, so I got confused that how much deep I needed to know for each topic. Some detailed questions were on the exams that she did not go over that much in the lecture, and some topics that she talked a lot were not on the exams at all, so I felt that is a little unfair.
Nothing, for the most part the class is well organized.
I think that if exams are going to be held in class, they should be a little shorter than exams that are taken in the testing center, only because we are allotted 2 hours to take exams in the testing center whereas class only lasts one hour and fifteen minutes. I just remember feeling very rushed to get everything answered when took the in-class exam and I was not confident in how I did. Had I had more time to check my answers, I think I would have felt a little better about things.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She made it known that she is willing to help students with any concerns they may have throughout the semester.
Ask students to come to class for the lectures and give advice anytime either on email or office hour.
Mackenzie was very good at showing concern for students, whenever anyone had a concern, she addressed it immediately
She recognizes every student's strengths and weaknesses.
she asked a lot of questions to make sure we understood and emailed us about cool opportunities
She is very understanding if a student has to leave early from class
Mackenzie is always available by email, phone, or in her office.
always made sure that students understood subject, always offered her time outside of class if needed
shes open to help. has not once said "look in the book yourself" when asked a question.
she reworded subjects if they were confusing or would draw on the board
She always tries to explain topics in a simpler way for us students to understand.
She takes the time to listen to her students' concerns and seems to genuinely care.
understood that students have other classes and obligations and was more than willing to work on scheduling to be fair for everyone
She's always checking on us via email, she sends study guides and makes herself available pretty much all of the time. She's always genuinely happy to help and even enjoys it.
She did not try only improving students' understanding on the course materials, but also tried to improve students' interests in science. She remembered all students' name and interests, and treated students equally all the time.
She is always available to her students during her office hours. Also after class she is available however, only for a limited time.
Concern was demonstrated by encouraging the students who had difficulty learning the material to meet her outside of class time for clarification
She was always willing to make time during and outside of her office hours to meet with students to go over content, should they feel they needed the extra help.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would recommend her to students because she is an overall excellent teacher.
Yes, definitely! It is because she knows her subject well, concerns for students and grades fairly! Good teacher!
I would recommend Mackenzie Manning to students because she is great at teaching this course even though there is a lot of dense material.
I would recommend her because she is very understanding, she is able to translate the material from scientific terminology to everyday language for us.
yes because she is fun to listen to and passionate
Yes. you learn a lot and she makes biology fun
Yes because I feel you learn more when there's in class visual clips and also out of class hw. Just enough, not too much or little.
Yes! I've taken her classes for two semesters and I wish I could take the next level bio courses with her too.
yes, awesome teacher
yes. she really knows her stuff and is well prepared to teach it to others
I would reccomend her students that take their studies seriously. Not to slackers who want an easy A, because it is not.
yes because she is a great teacher but challenges you
Yes, I would highly recommend her to other students because she is approachable when help is needed and explains topics very well.
Yes. She's great.
Not really. I felt that going to class did not have much correlation with the exams. The lecture was quite general compared to the extent of knowledge needed to learn for the exams.
Definitely
ABSOLUTELY! It's not an easy class, but they will learn so much. The will learn to look at the bigger picture and relate what they've learned in biology to the world around them.
Yes, because her lecture is well organized and fun.
Yes I would. Her class is very challenging and one must study and learn the material in order to pass the class. Even though the exams are challenging she is available for outside help. Her study guides are also very helpful.
Most definitely. She presents the material in a way that could be easily understood.
Yes, because she explains concepts that are difficult in ways that are easy to understand, she is very clear about the specific topics she wants you to understand, is flexible with students' schedules, and is overall a very nice person to be around and learn from.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
I'd like to thank her for all she's done for us :) She definitely belongs amongst my favorite professors.
I hope she can do a better job at making exams for the students to take. The exams should be clear and straightforward from what she expects in the study guide so students know what to focus on and do well on it.
A very good teacher
she seems like a cool person
Shes awesome.
She's a great Professor!!!
i think Mackenzie is a wonderful teacher, she's so passionate and her passion is actually inspiring. Listening to her lectures and how she relates these difficult biological processes to the bigger picture is a gift. She's one of the best teachers I've ever had and I really hope that she will teach higher level marine biology classes, because she'd be PERFECT.
She is one of the rare teachers who is passionate, care about students, knows materials very well, organized, and generous. She is also beautiful, friendly, hilarious, and cute, so it is fun just looking at her.
I really enjoyed her class. Even though it was difficult broke down the material in a way that was easier to understand
Great teacher. Great Class.

Even though I did not do well on some of the exams, but it does not mean I dislike your teachings. I love your teachings instead, and thanks for giving me support in email and office hour whenever I confuse about the materials in class.
Her slides could use more explaining in the power points.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
enthusiastic
Her ability to correlate subjects and concepts to real-world situations that students can grasp better.
She's passionate and very knowledgeable about biology. She is very enthusiastic and never fails to be silly and interesting.
Very helpful during labs, fun to have in lab
She knows the subject area very well, is nice and willing to re-expalin things to students when they needed it, and takes the time to meet with everyone during the lab session to make sure everyone understands what they're doing.
She knows the materials very well, the course is very organized, and is very generous.
Knows her stuff and explains procedures really well.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None.
Labs are really hard, and they really should count as writing intensive. Since they are not, maybe tone down the amount of writing we have to do, especially if she isn't even going to grade it. Answering every single procedure, discussion, and review questions is extremely time consuming and the discussion isn't even about the lab. The labs are so much work and she doesn't give many grades for them.
None
Have more labs that are hands-on and experiment based as opposed to labs that deal a lot with looking at the slides under the microscope. I know that can be difficult though, considering that a great of the labs we do consist of dissections.
Quizzes were a little difficult: too detailed as pre-lab quizzes, and the questions were a little confusing. So it will be more helpful if they are more simple.
Change the last lab, too many "what if this happens" situations.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
always made sure that students understood subject, always offered her time outside of class if needed
With ample notice, Kenzie was willing to work with students for make-up assignments and quizzes.
She makes herself available to students all of the time and responds quickly to emails.
Was always going around lab helping out
She took the time to make sure everyone was on track and understood why they were doing each lab and what they should be learning from the labs.
She walked around the lab all the time to make sure every student understand the material properly. She tried to understand each student's condition and situation, and was generous.
She once asked me if i turned in a lab because she didnt get it.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, definitely. She's a very down-to-earth and happy person making her a very approachable professor and is always willing to help you understand if you cannot grasp a concept.
Absolutely, she's an awesome teacher and I'm looking forward to future classes with her.
Yes
Yes because she is very helpful and attentive to students' needs during lab sessions, is a fair grader, and is overall and fun person and she makes lab fun.
Yes. Her class is very organized and she is one of the rare teachers who is very passionate about teaching.
Yes, to students who want to go on to harder classes. This class will prepare you in writing lab reports.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Thank you for a great semester!
Because she is so passionate and knowledgeable about marine biology, it would be ideal if she could teach some upper level biology classes and marine bio electives. She has a lot of advice to offer and is more than happy to help students along their way. She's an expert in her field and I think she would excel at more ocean related courses.

She was friendly and was easy to approach if we had questions. She provided videos in her powerpoints to show what certain things are which helped us.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
She could give us more time to study for the exam, not go on a trip the week of the exam. Also teach the class where not everyone is going to know what she is talking about right off the bat.
Become more comfortable with public speaking. It seemed at times that she was slightly nervous.
Less chapters before a test, or keep similar chapters together so it's easy to memorize. Also split the fish/marine animal test into two tests so that we can remember more information on the test.
none
slow down, but i know theres lots of materials she has to coverâ?¦

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She's really passionate about the subjects she teaches. She encourages students to pursue degrees in science and explore their options for careers in the field. Her enthusiasm helps to make the material more interesting and easier to understand.
Good at lecturing, keeping you interested.
well versed in the subject
Mackenzie is: Enthusiastic, passionate about her subject, she cares deeply about biology and helps her students see how important it is, and how it relates to life. She is the best professor I've ever had!
Knew material very well, encouraging, easy to talk to, good sense of humor, explained material thoroughly and in a way that was easy to understand
Here strengths are her knowledge about her subject. She can explain the material and other related science questions.
She is very relatable. She is very good at breaking things down and doesn't mind repeating things to make sure that everyone understands what is going on. She is always available for her students.
Very enthusiastic about the material and encourages students to form study groups and come see her if there are any questions.
Enthusiasm, knowledge of the subject, willingness to assist students outside the classroom
Student's success and understanding the subject.
She will simplify complex concepts. If students still don't understand, she uses examples that we can relate to--it's much easier to understand biology when we can relate to it. She's also very helpful and advocates students' self-teaching.
Professor Manning is obviously knowledgeable in the field of Biology, which is the first and foremost quality a professor should have. But what makes Professor Manning especially good what she does is the fact that she has a clear passion for the subject she teaches. Professor Manning provided unique and fun examples of concepts we were learning, which helped me to better understand the material and study for exams. She also utilized different ways of disseminating the course's concepts to us, such as videos that gave detailed visual examples of what were arbitrary concepts to make them seem more tangible and applicable, asking us questions to get engaged and review content, and providing more time and examples during her office hours to work with students one-on-one.
very knowledgeable, friendly, kind, and careful to her students.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
none
none
For some of the more difficult concepts, I suggest more practice in class. Emphasis on different models (like DNA replication) would also be helpful.
The only thing I didn't like was that the exam dates were incongruent with what was posted on the course schedule. I understand that we were slightly off-schedule, but I think we should have been given more definite notice of when exams would be held, rather than meeting for lecture on a wednesday, for example, and being told the exam would be held that upcoming Monday.
I would like to know more relate table subjects to understand the subjects more easily. Something I can relate more rather than the 1 example.

more dialogue on the powerpoints, at least for the students to study outside of class
Prepare students when exams are near, a week in advance since tests are taken outside of class time.
I don't care much for the online homework.
I know there is a lot of content that must be covered in a short amount of time. It is just as hard for Professor Manning to teach us all that content as it is for us to keep up with everything. I was pretty bummed that we had to skip some chapters, but I feel like maybe "skimming" down portions of the powerpoint presentations where it is possible could be helpful in keeping the class on a timely schedule while still providing all the necessary content, without skipping chapters.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She set up recitation sessions and attempted to work around everyones schedules. Mackenzie always stressed the importance of attending recitation, going to the STEM center or stopping by her office.
is always available in office hours should you need help
offered peer mentoring and tutoring
She truly wants everyone to not only pass her class, but truly learn the material. She teaches for understanding, not the ability to regurgitate facts. She offers so many opportunities for help, recitation is awesome! She's seriously fantastic!
She would be very open to concerns and other comments. She would always stress the current condition of the class as a whole and stress about extra help provided after class.
Always asks if we have any questions. Makes sure that we review what happened in the previous class so everyone is on the same page.
She constantly reminded students to study and to go to the recitation sessions for extra help
Offering help outside of class
Providing extra help with tutors available, recitation, and office hours.
Provides many resources in order to insure success for students.
By consistently encouraging students to come in to her office hours, see the Bio tutors, and go to recitation sessions to get extra help.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, This class is really tough but Mackenzie makes it as easy to learn as possible.
Yes, thoroughly explains every concept. If you can fully pay attention in lectures then you can pass this class. It's not easy, but if youre taking bio171 Youre not in school for easy classes.
yes, good teacher
Absolutely, Mackenzie's courses are challenging, but in a good way. I've learned more from this class then I have from any other science class before.
Yes i would definitely recommend her to students
I would because her knowledge about the subjects are spot on and her enthusiasm is something to admire to know more about Biology. She is more than happy to help about the subjects.
Yes. If you really want to learn this subject, rather than just getting a good grade without understanding the material, take her class.
Yes. It is a difficult class but very interesting and she is very helpful.
yes, refer to question 13
Yes because she makes Biology a interesting subject to know about.
Yes, I would because she wants to help her students earn good grades--they just have to be willing to work for it too.
Yes, because, even though she's probably one of the more difficult Bio professors, she is still fair when it comes to grading and helping you to succeed. She expects a lot out of students, but she provides you with the materials to succeed and will work with you if you're not finding those materials useful.
Yes. She is my favorite teacher and one of the most cool teacher I've ever had!
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
She always seems pretty stoked about teaching science, you can tell she loves her subject.
Just that she's an exceptional teacher. She's inspiring, intelligent, and she cares about her students.
Her flexibility from here scheduling for the class agendas are always to the students best interest rather than following a policy from the class syllabus.
Awesome
She teaches well by giving random examples that is similar to the topic.
She's always willing to help her students and prepare them for her difficult exams with multiple worksheets, tutoring, recitation sessions, and office hours.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She was very open to helping students. She took the time to explain a topic further to help me better understand it. She also used illustrations and did hands on experiments so that we would get what we were learning.
Knows her stuff and is always excited about what she is lecturing about. Never lectures in a dry tone.
well versed in the subject
In lab, she gives a thorough lab procedure before going into the lab itself.
She really seems to know biology.
Her enthusiasm to get her students interested in the subject. She also explains the procedure well.

Professor Manning knew the course material very well and taught it to us in an easy to understand and effective way. She also encouraged participation...everyone had to participate in labs or else credit would not be given, which is how it should be. Finally, she made the class fun by giving us cool experiments to do!
Professor Manning was very enthusiastic and energetic in class.
She was very knowledgeable about subject manner. She is also very easy to talk to and be comfortable around. She was very nice and helpful too.
Nothing more to say about this lady she just an amazing, smart and talented teacher. KCC is lucky to have her
Very clear on the daily objectives and chose very interesting labs for the students
Knowledgable, interesting and made the class fun
enthusiasm
Made class interesting, talks loud and clear, straight to the point. fun, cool and easy to talk to..
Helpful, clearly enjoys teaching, friendly.
She is: -organized -helpful -encouraging -understanding -very intelligent -enthusiastic -passionate about biology -interesting lab work -thorough in explaining the lab and background information
Experience
She made subject easy to understand
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
A short study time before taking the quizzes would be nice =)
none
Maybe provide extra credit if possible.
She seems annoyed when asked to clarify expectations of an assignment. She is reluctant to explain things more than once, even if numerous students are confused. She is probably a cool person to hang out with but is condescending if you question the meaning or technique of certain procedures, making it difficult to fully understand what you are doing and why. Not extremely conducive to learning.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Making herself available for her students; Especially for me, I had a situation that caused me to fall behind in my work; Mackenzie and I had discussed a course of action that I could take to make sure that I could catch up and turn in assignments that were late. She also made herself available to me whenever she could to help me with anything I didn't understand or had questions about. I really appreciated all that she did to help me better myself in the course.
offered peer mentoring sessions, plus tutors
She goes around lab groups and ask if we needed help or have any questions.
n/a
She took the time to thoroughly go over specific lab procedures and gave us any necessary background information BEFORE we actually did the lab, which made the labs a lot easier to do. It also made it so that we could focus more on WHY we were doing each lab (what the purpose of the lab was and what we are supposed to learn from it) as opposed to being fixated on the mechanics of the lab.
She would ask if we needed help and come up to us and talk to us if we did.
Promptly put up our grades so we knew how we were doing throughout the course
If you had a question she was always there to help. She constantly checked up on you during labs to be sure you were doing everything okay
offered plenty of help
she took time and explained things until you got the point.
Always came around the lab and made sure we were getting things right or gave advice.
She made herself very available to every student and frequently checked on progress during labs.
Encouraged them
She went to each student to explain concepts thoroughly
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would definitely recommed her to her students because of her thoroughness in her teaching. She made subjects easier to understand with her hands on experiments and her coursework such as quizzes or illustrations in class.
Be ready to do your lab reports early and do not procastinate. I have pulled about 4 all nighters because of this terrible habit.
yes, great teacher
Yes, the class is very well organize and lab reports done better understand the experiments that will be covered.
She assigns an exorbitant amount of writing, such as ten paper lab reports, some of which are essentially thrown away since she only grades a select few and discounts the rest instead of perhaps using them for extra credit or simply adding them to the overall grade.
I would--I learned the concepts in her lab that prepared me for lecture exams. The labs were hands-on.
n/a
Yes, because she is a great lab professor. The lab write up are time-consuming but very straightforward and she makes the labs fun!
Yes, she is very helpful and nice. Shes easy to understand and also is very knowledgeable about her subject matter. She also likes to get to know her students.
Yes, her classes aren't easy but are informative and help students who really want to learn
yes, I enjoyed the class and I think it was mainly because she was a great teacher.
yes
yes i would highly recommend her to other students.
Yes, Her write-ups are long, her class is hard, but I feel like i've learned a lot and if youre a Bio major like me, it's not about getting an easy a it's about getting a real understanding of the concepts
YES! Her labs are a little difficult, but they are very interesting, and I learned a lot!
Yes, i suppose so
Yes very organized and well taught lab
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
She is an awesome teacher who makes her lessons fun and interesting. A very compassionate teacher, I would definitely take more courses that she would teach and I would recommend her to others.
She is awesome with her students. Shows a great, professional connection with them.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Energetic and enthusiastic about the subjects covered
She explains concepts into detail, which makes it easier to understand.
Professor Manning is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable on the subject, she welcomes students to ask questions and does her best to answer them. She also uses a lot of examples to clarify concepts such as videos and pictures which is very helpful.
Easy to follow and listen too. I liked your interaction with the class and real life examples, and incorporating other materials to help us, like the video clips
Mackenzie is an incredible teacher. She knows her subject area well and comes to class enthusiastic to teach everyday. That really is rare quality to hold on to. She always engages the class during lecture I have yet to have a class where I am not impressed by her patience, warm demeanor in class, and genuine passion for biology. Mrs. Manning is one of my favorite lecture professors because of her ease in presenting material and making it interesting. I love that she goes out of her way to load videos ahead of time that aid in presenting the material because they really do help instill concepts and give us a visual piece to hold on to. (By the way, KCC needs a much better internet system, for students and professors. If the short videos presented in class are not pre- loaded, the internet connection is far too slow to be of any use during class time. With all the valuable information online KCC cannot keep a competitive advantage to keep up with the rest of academia without access to invaluable resources online.)
Passion for her field of learning.
She is great professor and willing to help to students.
She is very nice, friendly, and teaches with passion. Her lecture is just interesting and we can get a lot of information. She is good at speaking and encouraging her students.
Kenzie is a very kind and brilliant instructor who knew every subject that was addressed during class.
Good lecturer
she is very excited about what she is doing. she also provided lots of example to help bring across points.
She provides different avenues to aid in student learning such as videos, power point, drawings, etc. She also has a lot of passion for the subject, which comes out during her lectures, which makes learning more fun.
Manning has a great knowledge of biology, however, I do believe that her specialty is marine biology. Sheʻs caring and very fun.
- Able to encourage her students to learn more on the topics of biology. - Able to provide connections/internship programs for her students interested in majoring in biology.
She is extremely personable and friendly, making students feel very comfortable and allowing for a relaxed environment which allowed students to be able to focus on the material as opposed to having concerns of not meeting expectations.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Honestly, none. I struggled in the class because the material is a bit difficult. But she was great. If I have to take the course again, I will only have her as my teacher!
I would've liked to have an recitation class to complement the lecture.
Please speak slower! Also consider multiple choice for the exams... I feel the expectations for this class is too much for a 100 level course.
More review before exams
I wish Mackenzie taught many more classes. I would take them in a heartbeat!
Don't rush lectures and especially don't rush exams dates. Or shorten Exam questions.
Sometimes just doing lectures all class and watching her powerpoints are really boring. Maybe switch it up?
I do not like the homework website. it is not an effective study tool. it works as review but not in helping to learn the information.
I think the exam schedule dates in the testing center are a work in progress. I felt it was unfair that some students got extensions for the test, especially when one of the reasons was because the testing center was too full and so they couldn't take the test because the center was closing. I am sure they had other times they could have taken the test because the test was open for multiple days. I feel they should have taken it sooner and not wait to the last minute. If the exam was given in class, they would have to take it during that time. I had to take 3 finals on one day before.
I would just suggest maybe to stay on schedule with the syllabus.. I mean I know it really isnʻt her fault but now that the semester is coming to an end I felt rushed between the 3rd and 4th exam. I mean us students can go on tangents but maybe reduce the lecture a bit if we've fallen behind. Manning has to stop being too nice!..I feel like she lets students away with murder sometimes.. An example is that a student didn't take their 3rd exam and we didn't get it back yet (as far as I know) just because of that one student that was supposedly suppose to take it.
Nothing at all.
None, she's great.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She took the time to inquire about us as individuals. Made me feel like she cared, not like I was just another number.
She openly encourages students to email her and visit her office hours if there are questions or concerns.
She encourages critical thinking, and challenges you to learn and love the material. She makes sure the material in class is delivered and not rushed for the sake of being on time with schedule. She is also prompt with emails response, grades fairly, and is understanding.
Mrs. Manning is always available anytime for questions. I have never had to wait more than a few hours to get a response from her. I am always surprised how quickly she responds to emails, many times within the same hour. Mackenzie goes out of her way to ensure her students succeed. She even offers counseling outside of class for academic guidance and support. It is easy to see she cares about the success of her students and pours her heart into each class she teaches.
Frequently asking if the material discussed was clear.
She always shows us a nice smile.
She responded promptly to emails asap. She was available in her office.
Gave us several days to take exams in the testing center
always available for student to contact
She had office hours and adjusted exam dates to accommodate students who had extreme circumstances where they could not take the exam on the days it was scheduled.
She responds to our email in the best timely matter. She also gives us our grades promptly after each exam with the class average.
She always approach her students with concern and would her students to meet her if they need any assistance.
Any time a student approached her with concerns, she did her best to help them.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, already have, my husband will be in her classes as soon as possible.
Yes, she is a great instructor that is passionate about the area she is teaching.
Yes, because she is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the material. She challenges you to learn the subject and really tests to see if you know the material. You must put time and effort to pass this class.
Yes. She is very nice and willing to help.
Absolutely! Mackenzie is an incredible teacher and an all around wonderful person. I am a better person having met her.
I would recommend her because she is passionate and teaches her class well.
Yes. Her lecture is just good for whoever wants learn Biology. Even if we couldn't understand what she taught in the classes, we can easily ask her after class. She just talks to us nicely and friendly.
Yes definitely! She is a very intelligent, fun, informative instructor.
Yes, although the class is hard and you really have to study the material, you will learn a lot
yes
Yes, she is very enthusiastic about this subject and I have a lot of fun in her class. She is able to make the topic easier to understand. I have learned a lot from her class about plants, the environment, protists, fungi, etc. that has made me love these topics more. Her class has made me more excited about the environment and nature and makes me want to educate my friends about what I have learned.
Definitely (100%). She makes biology fun to learn especially in human development and reproduction. She can relate the material taught to real situations happening in the world.
Yes! She is great and what she does, and if you like biology, she is will make you learn!
Absolutely. She provides such an awesome atmosphere and that allows for easier learning.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Great teacher, great personality, fun to come to class and learn from her.
I really liked the videos shown with the lecture.
I enjoyed her lectures the most.
She's awesome, I just didn't like the exams... They're extremely difficult especially when they're immediately scheduled.
Class is a little boring something
shes great
I wished I could take your marine course next semester but it didn't fit into my schedule..please consider making the class earlier in the day!
Overall she is great at what she does, and if you ever want to get into biology or marine science, definitely talk to her!
18. Other comments:
Mackenzie has mentor written all over her!
Thank you for a great semester!
Although we were late on the syllabus schedule, I really appreciate that Professor Manning did her best to make sure the material in class was delivered and explained before moving on to the next chapter. Her flexibility with the schedule gave students more time to grasp difficult materials and I find this to be very helpful and very much appreciated.
Exams were kind of hard :/
Mahalo for being my teacher. You did not only teach me Biology but also helped me determine my future major by giving me wonderful advice. The exams were relatively hard for me, but I'm very glad that I took this course. Thank you !!
Thanks for being an awesome professor!

none
None
Review for quizzes. Give more detailed instructions to aid lab report questions.
None.
She's not a very fast grader.
None, great class!
Nothing at all.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She reminds us when we have to do a better job and make sure we do what needs to be done.
She helped us out when we needed, and was always understanding. No matter what.
Promptly responded to emails and available during office hours.
I remember that I introduced myself in the very forst class. She just tried to know each student. She showed us respect all the time.
She was always accessible to students and always asking for our input.
By being herself.
She asked where certain students were. She communicated well with the students.
She always gives feedback for students to improve on their reports.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes
yes, because she knows the material and is always open for questions or concerns about the assignment.
Yes yes yes. Because she is such a fun and good teacher of bio. Why take a boring teacher when you can take Prof. Manning?
Yes definitely! She's an awesome instructor.
I can totally reccomend her to students, especially those who seriously want to learn biology. We can learn it with fun as long as she teaches.
Absolutely, this is one of the best, if the not the absolute best, professor that I've ever had the pleasure of taking a class with.
Absolutely. See above comments.
I would recommend her lab because I learned a lot. It was great to get out there in the field. Nature is something amazing to behold.
Yes! Her labs are fun and engaging!
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
I just want to say thank you.
She's awesome!

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Very informative teacher, energetic
she is so nice
Professor Manning is an amazing teacher! She is so passionate about what she is teaching. Her positive attitude creates a wonderful atmosphere and keeps the class motivated.
She knows biology very well and made it very interesting. Her excitement on photosynthesis influenced me to buy more plants.
She is very enthusiastic about the subject, particularly integrating what seem like complicated concepts with larger-picture examples of how they work/why they're important. I found her presentation of the material greatly helped me to understand difficult concepts.
She enjoys the subject she teaches and it translates over.
Ms Manning was very knowledgeable in her subject area.
She is very innovative and try to include different ways of learning in the class.
Very enthusiastic abut what she teaches. Which makes the class enjoyable.
Incredibly passionate about the subject and teaching; she addresses difficult topics in a way that is easiest for the class to understand
She is incredibly enthusiastic about the topic and it is contagious. She is excited to try and help students learn about biology. Also, recitation worksheets and sessions were incredibly helpful especially during the genetics chapters.
She is very knowledgeable in biology! Plus, she always gets the most interesting conversations going.
She is very enthusiastic about what she teaches.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
it was just really cold in the class. thats about it
The only thing would be how the online homework corresponds with the lectures. Sometimes we have to do chapters we haven't gone over yet in lecture. It could be fair, but it would benefit us (the students) to do it after we lean it.
Taking the exam in the testing center was a good idea to catch us up/keep up with the schedule. Maybe next semester all the exams could be in the testing center.
My biggest problem with the class was the fast pace -- I don't think that's something she has much control over, though, given how much material there is to cover.
its not her, the course info was a little too fast, too much info in too short a time
I think having a test that covers 2 chapters instead of 5 would be ideal. The subject matter was very difficult and it was too much to study for one test.
Make recitation sheets as part of the homework and use them as a study guide to focus on more important things, because book is very hard to read. You can also give some points for that and include them as a part of the grade so people would be more willing to do that. Recitations sometimes don't work with tutor because people wait for him to answer the questions, this way everybody would be more prepared for recitation and exams.
N/A
The homework on mastering biology was sometimes not very relevant and often not helpful. This course needs to have chemistry 161 or high school chemistry as a prerequisite. Those few weeks spent going over chemistry basics would be better spent during the genetics chapter and would keep the course on schedule. Perhaps offer chemistry related homework during those weeks to complete on the students own time to be turned in and those that have already taken chemistry could take a quiz to opt out of the mandatory review.
Make all tests/exams available in the testing center and provide ample days to plan for them (most classes open their exams on Monday and closes it on Friday).
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
cared for our test scores
she explain things carefully to students
Professor Manning always reminds us to go to our recitations. She also always is open to help us outside of class.
reminding us of our assignments, and taking the extra time to explain the complicated topics.
Scheduling recitation sessions outside of class to give students a chance to review the material with help.
she made sure that she was always open for the students and willing to answer questions
She was always available during office hours if we had any questions or concerns.
She made sure that we know that we can ask her questions during office hours or via e-mail.
She would reply to your e-mails promptly. And was always willing to help.
She did not mind stopping mid-lecture to retouch on things found difficult or confusing; always invited students to talk to her after class or during office hours. never condescending!
recitation sessions, asking us if we understood, asking us questions to gauge whether we were keeping up.
she would ask the students if they need any assistance in class, and find them solutions.
She asks students proactively if any of the sections (especially difficult ones) are clear and understood.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes, very informative and fair teacher
yes , she is a good teacher
Definitely! She takes a difficult subject and lectures in a way to keep you interested and simplified.
yes. Her recitation sessions really help with understanding biology and a big help studying for the exam.

yes! She is awesome, caring and will make you love biology!
Absolutely. I strongly believe students will fair better about teachers who are passionate about what they teach.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
informed students of dates of certain events, which was very informative for certain majors etc.
She's a great professor!
Thank you thank you so much for a great semester. I enjoyed biology and now have a better understanding the subject. Your passion for biology has inspired me; When I go hiking or rock climbing, I am now more aware and appreciate the earth and all of its beauty in a different light!
Great teacher.
I noticed she sometimes get confused in teaching some concepts so it is hard for us to follow. Also there were some questions she couldn't answer in the class.
Awesome professor!
Glad that biology is taught by someone who truly loves and is excited about the topic and her students.
She is the bombz!

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Very easy to approach and fun to learn subjects from.
She is able to clearly explain in detail concepts and definitions to the class. At times, even using anaologies that relate to students so that we can better grasp the subject.
Mackenzie Manning's strength as a teacher was she knew how to explain verbally and physically each experiment, like she has been doing it for quite sometime.
She enjoys teaching and cares for the students.
She explained the details about the labs and was helpful during the lab.
She knew the subject matter well and was always willing to explain things if students did not understand it.
She knows the subject area very well. Course was very clear and concise in its timely matter. She is also very helpful during the procedures of our experiments. GREAT TEACHER!
Enthusiastic about biology.
She is incredibly understanding and tries really hard to get the students to learn the material.
Very organized, good at explaining concepts and procedures. Proactive and not reactive.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None.
None. Maybe changing the class to a writing intensive? Haha.
Things that I would change and/or suggest are doing grade checks with students and show each individual how they are progressing and what areas they can improve on.
None.
N/A
..none?
No bead labs.
More availability to answer questions and help out on assignments
Keep up the good work
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Asked questions and explained things in detail in another way.
She was able to meet during office hours if there was ever a need for students.
Mackenzie's concern for students was like any other teacher. She asks the class if they are understanding all of what she is explaining and then goes around the class to help some students.
Asking where they were.
She was helpful when students had problems or questions during lab.
She was always willing to help if we had any questions.
During our first couple of sessions at the beginning of the course she put effort into knowing our names and matching our faces.
Helped and emailed.
She did make sure that the entire class was on the same page before moving on
very responsive to questions and students concerns
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Mackenzie is so passionate about learning and it is contagious! She's an articulate professor who really knows her craft, and explains biology in way that her students can understand. I can tell that she really enjoys teaching, and she comes to class prepared every day.
She is interested in the subject matter so that makes her more enthusiastic in teaching, which makes it easier for us to get engaged.
She cares for her students. There are so much lessons to cover from BIO 172, and she finds a way (by including more trusted resources aside from the book and masterin biology) to present the information so that I we can understand them better.
Biology
She is very passionate about the material, especially about the environment.
Good powerpoints
Fun and energetic. Makes relations between real world and subject matter. Challenges students to think and is knowledgeable of subject matter.
her charisma and passion for the subject
Mackenzie was very enthusiastic of the subject matter, she really knew her stuff and definitely showed a passion for teaching us. She was available if we needed to contact her, and offered lots of extra credit to those who needed it.
She is enthusiastic and obviously loves teaching.
She is enthusiastic and has a very strong knowledge base. She also uses several types of resources to aid in students comprehension.
She's a great teacher. It was always comfortable to talk to her and we always related what we learned to life. Class was fun and interesting as far as a biology class could get.
Her in depth knowledge of the subject area, and her desire to answer any questions we as students had, even if the questions were outside of her knowledge base. She would always write a question down she couldn't answer and return the following class with an answer.
Amazing, positive attitude - great energy in the classroom - made me excited to learn. Strong communication skills with students - very open to questions, easily approachable, and always willing to make time for students outside of the classroom.
Very enthusiastic and genuinely interested in what she's teaching and it shows.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I don't know if this is even something she can help with, but maybe help narrow down the test material, because the material is soooo dense and I ended up studying for a week but not making an A, because I may have over studied one subject and not studied another, and that part I didn't studied was on the exam. Just frustrating and tough.
none
Make the exams a little easier, please.
Provide recitation for class!!! If that cannot be done, then provide 1 full review day per test given. Also, space out lectures so that there is not a need to rush at the end and cram in 10 chapters in 3 weeks. This is super difficult for learning new subject and demoralizing to students. It makes it really hard to get an "A" or maintain an good GPA because it is difficult to understand so much in so little time. Objectives are 80-90% clear for tests, but a lot of students feel unprepared on some part of the test because of the wording or subject matter is not exactly how it was taught/covered in class.
She is fine, she is doing a good job and should stay the same. The issue with this course is that it tries to cover an unrealistic amount of material.
Just keep to the class schedule so we don't need to rush at the end. I don't think it's fair that we are going to be tested on things that we did not even cover in class.
I found some of the presentations somewhat out of sequence; details presented before background. Other lectures spent 20min on broadstrokes then another 30 rehashing but with more detail. Perhaps, split the difference.
None.
Drop the masteringbiology.com homework. It felt more like busy work than helpful.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She really cares about us, and takes time to listen to concerns, help with studying, makes sure we understand the material, and makes sure we know we can email her at any time with questions.
Wants us to be prepared for the test and wants us to know the material so we can do well.
She is very consistent with communication. She would do her best to meet with the student especially when the student needs her help.
Has accessable hours
She let us know all the ways to reach her if we had any concerns.
Is available and willing to listen to students during or after class and will arrange to meet if office hours if necessary.
Accessible outside of class, offered extra credit, answered any questions we had.
Through her office hours and being available outside of class for students. Also, she was always aware of the breadth of the material needing to be covered and adjusted exams dates to accomodate how far we had actually gone into the material. Versus trying to cram as much material in a set amount of time to make sure she met exam deadlines throughout the semester.
Always willing to take time outside of class.
responds to emails very quickly in my experience. very approachable.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Oh ya, for sure! It is a great lecture to listen to every week.
Yes, because of enthusiasm.
Yes because when I had her from Bio 171, I still remember the lessons we covered. This guarantees me that what I learn form Bio 172, I would also understand and remember.
Yes, I learned a lot from her and the way she teaches makes me remember the material better.
Yes because if you want to get a good grade on exams you need to really understand the material, not just memorize it.
Yes, I would recommend her because she is an excellent teacher, that is knowledgeable of the subject. I would warn them though that her class is very time consuming for studying and that getting a "A" is very tough in her class. Still, she is very good and I would recommend her.
Yes, she is awesome
Yes! Although the class might fall behind schedule it's because she explains all concepts very well.
Yes. I think the class is pretty basic. Like others science classes. A lot of memorizing needs to be done ( not one of my strong points) but otherwise class is pretty easy.
I would definitely recommend her, and I already have to several other students. Her compassion as a professor coupled with her extensive knowledge makes her a wonderful instructor.
Yes, most definitely. Great knowledge of subject matter, and strong desire to pass knowledge on to students
yes. she's awesome
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
none
She's a very nice, energetic person that is easy to talk to.
Keep doing what your doing! You're rad as a teacher and as an individual!
She rocks
thanks for the excellent class. sorry i fell asleep all the time, work is killer!

This class, like Biol 171, tries to cover too much material. Not enough focus can be put on really learning anything because there is too many chapters to cover in not enough time.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Amazing, positive attitude - great energy in the classroom - made me excited to learn. Strong communication skills with students - very open to questions, easily approachable, and always willing to make time for students outside of the classroom.
She is very passionate about her subject and it's infectious! I like the intimate nature of the lab because these labs move quickly and she's available to help us with any problems.
She has a lot of enthusiasm, very friendly, hard working, and more importantly she is very knowledgeable in biology and science. I really enjoyed coming to class. She is fun and always smiling.
Passion for the subject
knows her subject and is fun and energetic.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None, lab is pretty much like other labs we've had.
Can't think of any.
None
Make objectives on prequiz a little easier to know. Find a way to decrease amount of writing to make prelab writeup and lab summary. There is way too much writing involved for a 1 credit lab class.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Always willing to take time for students outside of class.
She never gets mad! I don't think I've ever seen her get annoyed, so she has a great deal of patience.
Always willing to talk to students one on one about the material.
Always willing to help Encouraged further exploration of material
Available to meet during class, after class or on appointment.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, 100%. Broad knowledge of subject matter and strong desire to pass knowledge on to other students. Her interest and excitement was an inspiration.
Yes! Definitely.
Yes, for all the reasons above.
Yes, she knows how to filter the material and makes it not too heavy/not so light that you lose interest in what you're learning
Yes, because she is knowledgeable and funny. I would tell them that she is also a tough grader and objectives are not always 100% clear for quiz, test, or finals. Maybe 80% clear at best.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
she Rocks
She has a great laugh and smile.

None :)
nothing
Cramming to many sections into one test
Long powerpoints were well equipt with interesting videos but overall were long and repetitive. I really liked the lab but feel without it i wouldnt have enjoyed class as much
I think that for exams should be split up a little bit more instead of having like at least 5 chapters to study for the exam. There is way too much information to study all those chapters for one exam.
None. I enjoyed the guest speakers.
I don't have any suggestions at this time.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She knows subject well, and always accessible to students.
I Think Mackenzie Manningâ??s strength for this class is that she seems to enjoy the subject and when she lectures that comes through and it makes her lectures more interesting
Very enthusiastic about Biology.
I love the fact she relates everything we laern to real life. Its easier to understand that way. Helps me a lot. She knows her material well and tries to make class interesting.
She is very knowledgeable about the area of biology. She has strong passion to teach us about those.
She was very approachable.
I really liked her personality. She was very engaging with the class. She could understand the struggle to understand the material and simplified as much as she can.
Friendly, encouraging, willing to listen to students, willing to answer questions
She knew what she was talking about, she was very concern for every student in her class and made sure that each person knew what she was talking about. Very encouraging person about going to recitation, asking for help, etc.
She knew her subject well. She knew when the class was lost in the subject.
She is very open the questions and more than willing to help with any confusion.
Keeps class exciting and puts in effort to ensure students understand the material
She spreads her passion of biology to students and make boring things to interesting stuff. She is motivated, and so are we... most of the time.
Enthusiastic about subject!
She knows many things about DNA.
Very approachable and a good teacher as she explains things very in depth eith great detial
She relates to her students.
She explained things really well, and made them easy to understand
knew biology very well and taught the subject in a way that was easy to understand.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
can slow down her lecture during class.
Each test had a lot to go over so a little more review of the subject the class before the test would help. Although I understand we are short of time. The recitations helped a lot.
Easier tests.
None.
Nothing special!
I think organization was an issue and a better powerpoint for students to study.
Better powerpoints More hands-on assignments No "Mastering Biology," pen and paper problems from the book is good enough.
A study guide would be nice, because the first study guide really helped me be prepare what was on the test.
N/a
Slow down in her teaching. Do more study guides during class.
None
There's nothing to change of her teaching. Only additional time is needed. There are too much to cover in two days a week. I wonder why department chair made this course only twice a day. If it is not department chair and Manning made this course twice a day, WTH!!!
Plan for review days, the one we had was extremely helpful!
Exam is too hard and recitation time is not good (Sunday 5:15-7:15)
Maybe explain better in lecture.
less essay questions for the exams.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
she is always available during her office hour.
yes
Emails.
When we asked for help she would provide it. She also had study sheets for us to do which helped a lot. Does her best to explain the material to us to make it understandable and relateable.
She tried to encourage us to be interested in biology in many ways. She gave us 'live' lecture not like one way lecture, many opportunities for us to stop by her office to ask any questions or help us.
She was there before and after class for any question
Everything she could have done. She sympathized with the class in learning the material.
willing to meet with students to talk, encouraging, answers student's questions
Asking the whole class if we do understand before moving forward to the next subject or if not, tell Josh (recitation teacher) to go over with us students.
On one day of lecture she stopped the class to do an in-class study guide before a test.
She makes everything very clear and provides help outside of the classroom available constantly.
She answers all the questions that students make. If she doesn't have an answer, she goes after to find answers. She motivates her students in many ways, too.
Encourage us to stay awake.
She makes good atmosphere to contact her. She always says "Please E-mail me if you have questions."
She always encourages us to go to office hours, talk to her and just be open.
Was always available to help with anything we needed
encourages all of us to attend the recitation sessions.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes.
yes
Yes, teaches a lot of knowledge.
Yes. I took a bio class once and that teacher just taught everything off the textbook. Her class was boring and I didnt learn much. This class was taught based off her lectures and powerpoint slides. The textbook was more for reference.
Definitely! Her lecture is very interesting.
No, the class was hard to follow because it was so unorganized.
I would without reservations because she has a great personality as a instructor.
yes, she is a good teacher
Yes, she's very helpful, understandable, reasonable,& bright teacher. If she knows your trying hard, then she knows she's doing her job rather than just letting you fail and not bother a student at all.
Slow down a little more. Have more office hours.
She is fun and easy to learn from. She turns concepts in to tangibles making them easier to understand.
I like her teaching style. Cramming knowledge in your head in such short time.
Yeah, just have to be ready to learn alot!
I will recommend because her personality is very good.
I would recommend her because she keeps you interested in that subject.
Yes!
yes because of her teaching style. her exams are "hard core" but it helps us understand biology better.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Good teacher
Nice lady.
Thanks for being such an awesome teacher. =D looking forward to taking your other classes.
Thank you for your great lecture. It was not only for 'studying' but for being interested in everything that happens in our lives.
She's funny and make the lessons more understandable to us. Compares biology to real situations for bettering understandings.
She's a good teacher. She c ares about her student and very fast paced.
I would recommend her to any perspective student!
Great teacher.
Fun but hard class when we don't have enough time.
Thank you!!

Overall good experience.
I need only one more thing from this course. More lecture time. That's it. She is totally fine and teaches good.
Chemistry should be required, then that section won't need to be it thus corse. From the chem background I have the way it's tought in biology is not sufficient.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Great communicator
Her enthusiastic way of teaching motivates me to learn.
Attitude towards the class
Able to relate material to students
encouraging, willing to listen to students, willing to answer student's questions, friendly
She is open to questions and encourages participation.
Very personable and fair. Enthusiastic teacher and engages class to participate. Knows subject well.
Very willing to help and answer any questions that students had. She made the students feel comfortable in class so the subjects were easier to learn.
very friendly and approachable; fair grader; good at explaining
Encouraging, positive teacher. Made a general biology class very interesting and fun (which can be difficult).
well organized as far as grading goes.
She was able to make labs enjoyable.
well organized and knowledgable
We is very good at explaining.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Maybe cut out the pre lab it is a waste of time.
N/A
I dont feel we should do lab reports. A lot of the experiments we do are more observational. And a post lab quiz i feel would suffice. yes i do understand the nalytical use for lab reports but i dont feel its right for an introductory lab like this. Some field work, because being in the lab all the time is just doesnt seem right as biology i feel at least has more to do with live experience
Lab prelab, and lab write up takes 3-6 hours total to do for each lab. This class seems like a writing intensive course but it is only a 1 credit lab. Perhaps reduce the amount of required writing?
Writing Intensive Lab Reports to somewhat easier report format.
Pre-lab lectures a little more organized. And established what is need to be accomplished and what is expected before lab more clearly.
The class was fine and I think there is nothing really that I would change about the class. Although the class is pretty writing intensive for a biology lab, i'm sure there is good reason for that. If I had to change anything I would make the class writing intensive or make the class a 2 credit class instead of a 1 credit class to compensate for the amount of work being done.
sometimes the answers to the prelab quizzes were not found in the prelab reading; at the beginning of the semester i didn't know that she sent out instructions for the lab report
even though it is a just a one credit class she did not seem to prepair herself before lab. she was orgainized as a person but would stubble through explaining each lab before we started. if students have to read and understand the labs so should she
I think that for the first lab it was hard to figure out what she was looking for in the lab write up.
none
none
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
always encouraging us to talk to her
She would talk to us if she felt we were struggling
answers students questions, willing to explain concepts and subject matter if it is difficult or unclear to students, willing to listen to students, encouraging
She had a willingness to meet outside of class to cover things that weren't understood or missed even.
Accessible via e-mail. Offered Excel tutorial help and help in general. Answered any questions proposed.
She made herself available outside of class and was willing to help students to the best of her ability. Especially if it had to do with any technical problems, she would make sure that the students would understand the material that they had questions on.
always approachable and showed interest in students
There were a few topics that I was very interested in, but didn't grasp the concepts that well. When I approached Ms. Manning, she spent extra time making sure I understood everything. Explained each lab procedure in detail so that each student knew what to do and would go over it again if one of us didn't understand.
She stayed after each class for questions.
answer emails promptly and was available outside of class
She answered all of our questions promptly.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, great teacher
yes, fun lab but to many reports
Yes, she is a good teacher
Yes she is personable which it makes it easier to learn from.
Yes!
Yes I would recommend her to others because she makes students feel comfortable in class which helps people learn the subject easier. She reaches out to students on a personal level which gives the students a better overall class experience.
yes
I would definitely recommend Ms. Manning to students. I have taken upper level science course that were difficult, but extremely boring and I never really felt like I was doing actual science or discovering anything. However, I Mackenzie Manning's biology lab I enjoyed going to every week and felt like I was really a part of the scientific process of experimentation and discovery. I especially enjoyed the molecular biology lab and the encouragement Ms. Manning gave us in having scientific freedom to create and test our own experiment.
Yes, great Lab! Made students work for their lab grade, and it was fun (with the right group members). For more difficult labs, you made powerpoints, which were useful.
no. she is laid back and cool but does not explain material or expectations clear enough before each class.
yes
yes, pushes you to understand key concepts
Yes.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
N/A
Mackenzie portrays a very mellow and fun persona which brings out alot of positive energy in the students. This energy overall helps in the learning process for the class.
Very passionate about what she teaches and it comes across in class!
funny
Great teacher.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
passionate...helpful...connects class to the real world !
Organized, funny, and knowledgable
Strengths as a teacher is her outgoing personality , which makes her approachable. She is always willing to offer help and is very understanding. She can emphasize with her students and does hand on activities to allow the student to easily understand the course materials.
I really liked her character; she wasn't afraid of question and show her knowledges. She knows her materials and that confident makes me want to listen and absorb what she is teaching. She owns her space, and which was very comfortable to me.
Awesome teacher! Passionate about biology, makes learning interesting.
Her passion for biology and the concern for teaching well.
Knowing subject matter
It was a very fun and interesting class. She provided a good atmosphere for learning. I also like how she provided the study guides for the exams. I like how she shows short videos throughout her lecture, this makes the lecture more interesting and solidifies subjects talked about in lecture. She is very knowledgeable and interested in the subject.
She's very accessible. She knows the material very well. She help the student to succeed in class. She would ask the student what should she do to improve her exam after an exam.
Ms. Manning knows her subject. She's available outside of class. She participates in student geared activities.
She is very enthusiastic about the subject and engages the students in a way that gets them excited about what they're studying. She is also very approachable which helps with asking questions about things we may not understand in class.
She knows her subject and has great enthusiasm.
I enjoyed the youtube videos that were shown to gain a better understanding of the material.
Motivation as a teacher
Super enthusiastic and genuinely cares. Takes the time to answer all questions and does a good job being as knowledgeable as can be expected for a course covering such a broad scope of material.
trying to keep us interested
Great at explaining concepts and subjects thoroughly and clearly. Very well spoken and obviously expresses her passion for biology through her teaching.
Knowing a lot of information about her lectures.
She's very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about biology and is also very friendly and approachable to students.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Love her style
none
no changes
N/A
Slightly less powerpoint
If possible, spreading out the material over a longer period of time. Also, a little more clarity on the study guides as far as what should be focused on for the exams.
Work on analogies. Give out quizzes at end of class to encourage student participation so they will come to class.
None.
I'd change the powerpoints. I'd make them more indepth more relevant to the subject matter as far as focal points and information we as a class should know about each topic, especially regarding testing.
None. I've taken her before and I believe she's made great improvements since last semester.
The powerpoints should be more descriptive of the material that will be on the exams.
material was away too much for a small semester
N/A
Speak slower. There were several lessons we flew through and then had time at the end, for example immunology, but it would have been easier to follow and absorb if we'd taken the full time.
instead of having a 4th exam 2weeks after the 3rd exam, have the 4th exam on the last day of school; in a way, it's a 2-part final exam
better study guides/teaching methods to prepare everyone for exams
If possible, exams schedule could be a little more flexible. Could also focus more on the important and harder concepts or topics for every chapter, instead of going over everything in the book. She should also go over all exams after it was graded, so that students can learn from their mistakes and what could of been done better.
To organize the chapters better with more time in between the exams.
I thought the way she reordered some of the lessons from the book was effective (grouping all the plant stuff together and then all the animal stuff together separately), and I thought it could actually be reordered further. Specifically, the book covers the animal phyla and the different types of body systems among them before actually discussing the systems themselves. There was an exercise on Mastering Biology back when we were covering the animal phyla asking us to identify the types of systems found in the different phyla without ever having learned about many of them yet (Malpigian tubules come to mind, which was explained later in the excretory chapter). I just thought covering the systems and mentioning the associated phyla briefly before going more in depth on the evolutionary relationships later might be more helpful.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
time never an issue...prompt emails...additional indepth explainations on off subject material!
Stayed after class to answer questions and always responds to emails.
Responds quickly to emails, show concerns for student in difficult situations. Very understanding.
Asking questions
Encouraging class interaction, being available for questions and assistance with course material, and accommodating when students' needs arise.
Emailing us if there are any changes in the course.
She is very helpful when you need help. She help you understand the concepts of biology by showing videos in class and drawing on the board.
She gave us weekly study guides, she was available for questions, she extended a couple online assignments when we were having difficulty completing them because of technical issues, and she encouraged us to use study groups.
She got our exams back to us in a timely fashion and was willing to go over any questions we may have had on the exam. She also makes herself available for questions whenever possible. She seems genuinely concerned about the learning taking place in her course.
She helped outside of class to answer any questions.
Would talk to us if we were struggling in class
By asking.
By meeting up with us after class.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes...knows and love her job!
yes, she pushes you to learn the content and expects you to be able to explain key concepts on test.
I would recommend her to students because she knows what she is teaching very well. The class is fun and relaxing but at the same time you are learning.
I recommended to friends already. She knows what she has to do and her class was enjoyable.
Yes! She keeps the class interested, and she is very knowledgeable and passionate about biology.
Yes, she may not be the best lecturer but she grades her exams fairly. Mastering Biology may seem difficult at first but it is very helpful.
Yes, this was a very good class overall.
Yes, I would recommend her to student because I like how she talks it very up beat. It makes me stay awake in class compare to my other professor when they talk it makes me fall asleep. I like her stories it's very interesting. She also make the subject interesting.
I would recommend her lecture to other students, especially 171. She really seems to know and understand Bio 171 off the top of her head. I'd also recommend 172, but I'd also mention that they need to do a lot of personal reading, form a good study group, and prepare for at least one all nighter before each test.
Yes, she's a great teacher and she makes biology a very interesting subject to study.
Yes, She has a passion for the subject and is a great teacher who cares for the students.
yes, she is a good choice in higher level biology classes
Yes, she's excited about the material and it helps to get you excited. I really appreciated all the visuals and videos she brought in as well - it provided a nice change in format both for the sake of variety as well as different ways to absorb and see information.
sure
Yes, Mackenizie can set a good foundation for students that are majoring in Biology, Pre-med, or Pre-pharm. She covers everything that you need to know and what you should've known. She cares and goes the extra mile in helping students in understanding the importance of biology and how it affects everything in life. She is also very friendly with everyone and willing to help out with any questions you have.
Yes because she knows her lectures really well.
definitely, due to strengths listed above
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
she seems to like here job and is very enthusiastic
I really appreciate that she is teaching bio.
I enjoyed learning about biology from Mackenzie and believe she is determined to do what's necessary to be an excellent instructor.
Ms. Manning really knows her Bio 171. She's good with 172, but it seemed as though she had to rely heavily on her notes and that she rushed through certain sections, which were very important on exams, in her lectures.
Great instructor.
Awesome!!!
you are an awesome teacher that i enjoyed taking this semester
N/A
so much information to cover for each exam - overwhelming
A great teacher who takes pride and passion in teaching. Very friendly, considerate, and understanding. Also very funny, which made the subject fun to learn.
