I really enjoy the small group discussions
Meh, the course was alright, in that it wasn't really my cup of tea. However, I did get a different understanding of indigenous peoples and the issues they face. I accept and respect that differing views exist.
I enjoyed learning about the injustices that take place in Hawaii and the United States. It put things into perspective that there is still much work that needs to be done before all indigenous peoples have equal opportunity and the recognition they deserve.

I'd like to see the arguments reconcile with one another, and how one, cohesive nation - a Hawaiian nation, for example - would look, theoretically.
The only thing I would recommend, is to have more in class discussions. I felt that it was really difficult for many students to open up in front of the class. Maybe if we had smaller groups for discussion, then people would be more willing to come back to larger group. So maybe begin class with a discussion question for small groups, and then groups can debrief. Then, a spokesperson from each group could respond back to the group.

My friend told me to take an American Studies class because it is better than history....So I decided to take this class since it revolves around Indians/Hawaiians.

I liked the group PSAs because we can do it in a video form.

I like how we discussed the materials as a whole class and further break down the material in smaller groups and shared. I like learning about the history of the indigenous people.
Group discussions are always fun. I enjoyed activities.
That is very difficult to decide. I really enjoyed all the units.
It was a WI credit course but it didn't feel as demanding because the bigger assignments were given out in advance giving us plenty of time to work on it.
I liked how it was in the renovated Sakamaki classroom. Thing were much more open and therefore helped me learn better.

I really liked learning about Hawaii and other indigenous nations. Learned so much I didn't know about Native Americans.

One of the best teachers I've ever had.
Each discussions was very informative!
The elaborate explanations of each topic and ideas presented
I liked the conversational tone to the class. In the beginning of the semester I felt as though introducing us to the topic of indigenous studies was rather abrupt. However at the end of the class I feel as though our class mates really bonded.
A variety of medium was used in this course. The topics were interesting, relevant and stimulated thought.
The subjects were very compelling and varied. The readings were (mostly) excellent. I liked how there were distinct themes of the class, from history to pop culture to sovereignty. There was a good mix of lecture, discussion, small group activities, videos, and guest speakers. I especially liked the small group activities. The class Facebook page encouraged students to post outside information that the wanted to share. I appreciated that there were many extra credit opportunities, and that they increased my awareness of cool community events which I could attend.
I liked that the class was very engaging. The group discussions were very interesting and I feel like I gained a new perspective on the world because of this class.
The way that it makes you think about issues most people wouldj ust look over. It was a very eye-opening course.

Create games that relate to the topic, it might make it more memorable.
By making the students do more activities on different struggles Indigenous people face
I actually didn't really like the introduction readings in the beginning of the course. They were very weighty and full of law concepts, which I can see why one would use these as an introduction to the course, however I feel as though I could appreciate those more later on in the year once I was more emotionally invested in the course. It just made the course seem really hard in the beginning of the year.
Maybe teach more about the cultures of the indigenous peoples so we can understand more about the effects of colonialism, etc.
Perhaps more guest speakers? Overall, this course was organized and very informative. There's always room for improvement, but for this class, it doesn't really need to fix anything.

The subject interested me, and it fulfilled two requirements - HAP and WI.
I took this class because it fulfilled the WI and HAP requirement. Also, a friend of mine recommended Kumu McDougall's class so that influenced my decision of taking this class as well.
Fulfilled focus designations but also was a topic I was interested in learning about. Heard great reviews from my adviser who recommended the course to me as well as other students over the years.

I chose at first because of the WI,Hap,DH focus, but I stuck with it because it was an interesting course.

Kumu McDougall is a fantastic instructor. She is clearly very passionate and enthusiastic about the subject, and really seems to care about her students. She was always encouraging, and a lot of positive feedback. She has such a broad knowledge base that she was able to choose the best readings and videos. I enjoyed her class very much, and she motivated me to do my best. She encouraged us to find ways of incorporating our outside interests into the class through group projects and individual papers.

All the new informations that I learned was very intriguing.
Learning about Indigenous people and historical events that were not taught in high school
I liked the discussion parts of class!
The topics were interesting. I did appreciate the efforts made to stimulate thinking in group activities.
I really liked that this course wasn't so much about "meeting standards," but instead it encourages students to think about how the subject matter affects their lives and how it's relevant to the world around them. The course really challenged my thinking and made me realize how the society around us shapes who we are and who we become.

This may not be too bad, but the reading materials/ lectures are reiterations of each other. Though the lecture is a bit more than that.
I sometimes felt overwhelmed by the amount of writing, and frequency at which it was due (every class session).
I didn't enjoy the fact that most of the subject matter we learned about was so depressing, but I mean Kumu can't change history or what actually happened to the indigenous people in North America and the Pacific. There really is no way to brighten up tragic stories of American history regarding indigenous peoples.

I'm grateful for all that I learned this semester.
I think the classroom was way too small for our class size. it disrupted my learning becuase of the lack of being able to see the powerpoint lectures at times. I think if the class were only 20 students or less it would;ve been perfect but with the amount of kids we had, it was just to cramped. I didn't like it.
Thanks for broadening my perspectives and teaching me about different cultures in the Americas. I really got a lot out of this class, which I never thought I'd end up truly enjoying.

She is a great teacher who demonstrated thorough knowledge of the class material. The only aspect I did not like was the amount of material that got presented via powerpoint slides, it seemed that the material got extremely dense at times.
A terrific professor who has a real passion for her field of study, and who extends that passion on to her students.
I really enjoyed Professor McDougall because she was always willing to work with your schedule especially if you had a sports absence. It's always nice when Professors are understanding of that because you don't find very many that are willing to work with you. She also taught me a lot of Hawaii and governmental issues that exist on the island!

Brandy is a very enthusiastic lecturer who knows a lot about all aspects of indigenous peoples. While the class could be pretty depressing at times, she delivered all of the material in a well thought-out manner and I was interested to learn every day in the class.
Awesome teacher...learned much more in this class than Hawaiian studies 107 about issues in Hawaii along with Native Americans.

I really enjoyed group discussions during Friday sessions, it allowed us students to finally talk together and collaborate ideas as well as voice our own disagreements/agreements with what was covered in that week's lectures.
The opportunity to view multiple perceptions of our topics of study, from authors, our instructors, and other students as well.
I actually really liked the labs because that is where we got to have an opinion about certain topics!

Most teachers I know would just give points based on who did the post on time and not bother to read them.

16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I realize that this is a writing intensive course, but there were several articles that were extremely dense and thus, quite hard to analyze or even relate to.
I didn't dislike any aspect, but the one that I liked the least would have to be the writing.
The blogs were kind of a pain because of the time they were due by. If they could have pushed that time back to like midnight, I would have had a 100% in that portion of my grade, but since some practices went to like 7, I would be starving so I would go get food and by the time I would be done, the blog would be late.
My least favorite aspect would have to be discussions
I didn't like learning about all the negativity.
I felt like the exams were really tough. We do a lot of reading in the class and there were a lot of details from the readings on the exam that I wasn't really prepared for. The study guide and cheat sheet didn't do much to help me because I didn't know what to focus the most on for the multiple choice. I went to class every day (minus a couple sick days) and I studied all the powerpoints thoroughly before the test, and I still did not do very well on it. A friend of mine said that when he took the class last year, there were online quizzes for each reading. I think that would be very helpful for me to be able to pick out the key points in the readings.
I least liked doinh presentations just because i dont really like talking in front of classes.
I disliked posting online. It was sort of a hassle to remember.

-Most of the readings were very lengthy and it was difficult to remain connected to the topic.
i felt uncomfortable most of the time when we would watch videos or discuss about how much America has done and how much it is hated.
I didn't really dislike anything about the course, but the writing every night was tedious.
I would have liked the online assignments, especially those due on the Sunday before class, to be posted as early as Friday and as late as Saturday. Working and constaatnly checking the site for when the assignment goes up on a Sunday was a little stressful at times, but otherwise prefer the online assignments.
Understandably so this course utilizes a lot of literature from divergent, sometimes radical, points of view. And while I certainly feel that reading this literature is necessary to understand the core message of this course, I would advise that adequate time be given either in class or in discussion sections to discuss the content of the material. At times this literature, without an opportunity for discussion, can be overwhelming, confusing, or misunderstood. Given the sensitivity of the subject matter, I would advise that literature should either be balanced or provided discussion time.

17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
This is a great course to gain knowledge on Indigenous Peoples, their history, struggles, and modern trials. Although it focuses on Native Hawaiians for the most part, but it still allowed room to learn about all Native Peoples under the American umbrella.
I signed up for the course expecting to disagree with the majority of the information that was offered, and ended up learning and agreeing with much of what was taught.
It was interesting for the most part!
Even though there were written responses almost every night and a couple papers, this class wasn't that bad. It was very enjoyable and I learned a lot.
Good course to get focus requirements.

I really liked this course and I learned a lot from it. It got to be pretty depressing sometimes because of the dark past of the United States with Indigenous peoples but it's material that more people need to know about.

I feel as though the required book was a waste of money. In all of my other classes, I use the book on a regular basis, but for this class- I only used it three times. All of the articles outside of the book were scanned to online PDFs, so why not take those three from the textbook and put them online as well?
A great class that I would urge any student interested in sovereignty, or really just in the real history of America, to take.
I think if you could move the discussion post time back to around 10pm that would be perfect . For me i know that sometimes i don't get back to my room till around 8 so it would be hard to keep up with the posts.
I really liked this course overall. The workload was not overwhelming but I still learned a lot. Brandy was an excellent lecturer and Angie was an awesome TA.

16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
There were a lot of blogs to do, usually 2-3 times a week. For a writing intensive course, I would have rather written an extra paper and had one blog per week than 2-3 times. But, the blogs were a great tool for getting the students to read the materials and form an opinion. I also felt that sometimes (mainly in the beginning of the course) Brandy only presented one side of the issue, or shed another side in a more negative light. While everyone does have an opinion, I do think it is important to remain as neutral as possible.
Blog posts being due at 8, I think they should just have to be in before class starts.
Presentations...even though i know it's inevitable it's just nerve racking

I enjoyed this course a lot and have gained a greater understanding of issues and concepts relating to indigenous people. I also feel like I still don't have a defined opinion on some of the issues, like Hawaiian sovereignty, but that has only encouraged me to research and gain more knowledge so I know how I feel about an issue that affects me greatly.

(I'm sorry if my evaluation isn't as articulate as it could be--I had to start again after my last form was erased). Dr. McDougall/Brandy is a skilled teacher and mentor. She is able to balance encouragement and critique of individual and the collective; she manages the balance between facilitating class dialogue and lecturing, leaving a lot of room for student-led discussion and group-teaching; she brings so many resources, knowledges, experiences and networks with her to the classroom and is very generous in her sharing of these. Her course design, chosen texts and assignments all demonstrate her ability to coach graduate students towards the fulfillment of their own goals as well as towards developing graduate/professional academic skills.
she is a wonderful professor who is very knowledgeable and passionate about this course and her field. She is always available and willing to help students with their individual projects. Professor McDougall is great at providing context, helping the class make connections, and facilitating discussion.
She is a great instructor. Always encouraged us to share our thoughts and reactions to readings. Provided a variety of material for us to think about critically.
Brandy may be one of the best teachers I have ever encountered at the University of Hawaii. She's up there! I think what I appreciated most was her ability to integrate material from the students into the larger discourse of the class. She was accepting of different world views, yet still effectively communicated an indigenous perspective that was politically informed, culturally relevant, and theoretically flexible. She was able to capture the nuanced nature of a subject matter that is all too often "claimed" by a particular stakeholders and portrayed as black or white when in fact the material is more gray than anything else. In this sense, Brandy is a true scholar whose knowledge base is broad and deep. She is rooted like the Ko'olau mountains behind our campus.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I was drawn to the course by the text selections in addition to my desire to work with Brandy. The course did not disappoint. We got to discuss salient theories and bodies of work central to Indigenous studies and Pacific Indigenous studies, and discuss new texts in the field with their authors (Aikau, Tengan, Sommerville, for example), which really enriched our understanding of the material and our ability to engage with the themes of the course and texts. I also enjoyed that her classroom/syllabus utilized film texts in addition to our readings, and the combination of creative and critical texts. Finally, I enjoyed reading my colleague's blog assignments, and learned a lot from their engagement with texts according to their own research interests online and in the classroom. This was a diverse classroom, which greatly facilitated my learning.
I really enjoyed the class discussion and most of the texts that were chosen for the class, especially the creative works. I liked the blog posts as weekly responses as well. It was also helpful that we were able to choose our own research projects. It was interesting to have students present their projects and present during a week of discussion facilitation. Overall this was a really great course.
I enjoyed the open dialogues of each class session with each student taking on a text. Reading of various poetry that coincided with text. The videos were great. I also appreciated our guest speakers and authors of the texts we read. Crucial to get author's insight into process and purpose.
While Brandy's leadership was critical, the class was incredibly strong. This is a testament to both the University (which is unbelievably underrated) and Brandy'a ability to attract the very best students. Still, every cohort is different and I would not be surprised if the next cohort would be as strong. The quality of the classroom discussion was unparalleled.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The only thing I would change is our (student) decision to move O'Brien's _Firsting and Lasting_ to the semester's end and replacing it with Andrea Smith's _Conquest_. The move disrupted the flow of the readings.
There were some moments when the class felt tense during discussion and communication did not seem as great as it could have been in the classroom. Also, it was difficult to hit the 10pm deadline the night before for the blog post.
Although I enjoyed every text we read some were hard to finish the text and additional readjngs in a timely matter, especially with a fully loaded schedule. Also there was never enough time to discuss all the parts a of text for often we would get side track by other often related but side side stories to text.

This course was excellent, and I would definitely recommend it, and Dr. McDougall to other students.
it is a very engaging course that asks important questions. This course helped me to reflect on my own scholarship and projects, and it introduced me to a great amount of new material. It was wonderful to have some of the scholars who wrote the books we read come to our class.
We briefly touched upon indigenous people's beyond the Pacific and the continent, however I would have loved to have talks or read texts about other indigenous people's- purely as a cross look at what they are doing: in accomplishments and struggles. Perhaps a comparison to the Pacific and the continent.

I really enjoyed learning from the lecturer and the section leader. Brandy did a good job better explaining the readings during lecture. Angie did a good job in sections coming up with critical questions for us to answer. I really enjoyed both paper topics in this class. Being a shy person I am also grateful that presentations was done as groups and not as individuals. We all got to learn, but we did not have added pressure and standing up in front of the class alone.
Excellent professor! learned a lot, more so on the aspects of reality to just be more open minded to what is actually going on out there with indigenous cultures and every other culture in general.
Kumu Brandy was a wonder Professor. She was very interested in the topic and it showed through her teaching. She organized the class very well and it was a manageable writing intensive credit. I liked the discussions and the group presentations.
I really enjoyed the class post every night before class. It got the class openly expressing their views as well as our fellow classmates understanding the topic being discussed more efficiently when getting to know how others think (reading each others' post).
I liked how we learned about different types of indigenous people not just one group. I also like how we looked not only at the past but the present as well and the many issues that are part of our daily lives.

Learning the history of Native people.
I liked the paper topics that was given to the class. First looking at the assignment, as any typical college student would, I was relieved to see that the page amount was not a huge number. When it was time to actually sit down and write the papers, I found it easy to surpass the page amount which made it difficult to summarize, which if you ask me is a very good problem to have. This forced students to get straight to their main points that they were trying to get across through their papers.
I liked how enlightening it was. Many public schools keep us in the dark to the topics that Kumu helped us uncover and understand. I feel that I know a lot about the history of Indigenous peoples and all of the atrocities.

NONE! Everything was very informative and if not, it was a learning experience.
I just didn't like that the class took place so early in the morning. It was often difficult to be lively in that class because it took place so early.
I did not like having to do the post before 8PM. I don't get off of work until 6 to 7PM and rushing onto the computer was a hard thing for me to do.
Sometimes I felt my TA was babbling on about things, she had either never experienced or completely understood...
Nothing! I liked everything in the class because there was a lot of class discussion.

I did not like how there were some troubles in Laulima. I missed a couple of assignments due to the Laulima not submitting my response questions. If this were fixed earlier, I would've gotten a better grade. The blog was a very good idea.

I didn't like the way she would bring up the team/group assignments one before it is due. It's pretty difficult to meet up or have time to see other group members because of outside factors such as work, family business, etc.
I didn't like how the test were set up, meaning the study guides. I didn't feel like it was an efficent way of preparing for the test because the study guid had all this information that she wanted us to know and when the test came, the questions weren't even directly related to any of the information that was on the study guide. The one page, front and back was helpful for the essay mostly, but not for anything else on the test. Not for me, anyways.

It was very well-rounded and I learned a lot. The issues that were raised are often pushed aside and I found it very interesting to look deeper into the history of the U.S. I feel as though everyone living in America should learn about the things that Kumu addressed in the course.
This was a great course. If another course like this one is offered again, I would take it. I learned a lot here.
I may have misunderstood the course description but I wasn't prepared for the course to generally focus on the negative histories of the Indigenous Peoples of America. I was expecting some or about half the course to cover these topics, but I feel that maybe a deeper look into the culture of some for a better understanding of the current and past problems, and how advances or shortcomings have been made on those fronts to solving or resolving the current issues at hand would make the class more pleasant.

Very interesting. There is a lot of reading and discussion, but it is usually very stimulating and thought provoking. It opens your mind to new ideas, not matter what side or opinion you take on the topics. It is a great class to take, especially if you want to learn things not commonly talked about.

probably a 7 out of 10. It was very informational and exciting at some parts, but some of the methods of teachings and the overall content I don't believe was effective really. If I didn't do so well on the essays on the test and throughout the semester, I probably wouldn't have passed because the discussion boards were graded pretty randomly. I mean this because at first they were graded a certain way then throughout the semester the requirements kept changing. I found this unfair and difficult to keep track of really. Also the due time for the board posts were unreasonable too. It was just at a random time.

The aspect I love most about the class is that it reminds us that indigenous cultures are not a thing of the past to be studied from the top down and indigenous peoples are not merely passive subjects to be studied! By reading material written and produced by Native artists/ authors/ historians/ educators/ activists, etc. we see that Native cultures are fluid and active and powerful, not passive and ahistorical. That change in academic perspective lifts out Native voices and allows them to contribute to their own identity formation.

Although I respect the effort and understand that this was a first attempt, having a group member from another island was a bit challenging, and did prove to be more time consuming when working on group projects, etc. Hopefully the University will one day be equipped with the infrastructure and technology to support video-conferencing/ Skype/ Facetime attendance, but I donʻt think itʻs is a fair arrangement for the rest of the students who are required to accommodate that burden at this moment.

This course is so important!!! This is what college education is all about: exposure, discovery, critical thinking, politicizing, and reading against the grain.

There were so many things that I learned in this class that made me go "WHY AM I ONLY HEARING ABOUT THIS NOW?" SO, what I appreciate most about this class is that the knowledge I gained poured over into my 11 year old daughterʻs life and sparked a critical discussion with her about her nationality. I am so grateful that she has an alternative perspective to the indoctrination of the US public school system, rather than feeling like she has been lied to or in the dark for the majority of her childhood once she reaches college.

The discussions and class participation. This class was one of best classes I have ever attended and loved every facet of it. The teacher was amazing at communicating with her students. I could go on and still not be able to say enough about her ability to teach, INCREDIBLE!
I liked having the room that we were in, being able to sit in comfortable chairs for such a large class in a small room. For the course I liked some of the reading material that she assigned, really opens up the mind to different possiblities.
The assigned readings were interesting and made me think of the past in ways that I've never thought about before. I liked the discussions that we had. I also liked the creative project. I felt that as a class we really came together at the end and became a sort of a family.
I liked how we learned about American history from the perspective of the underdog. We were taught the other side of history that which was eliminated in secondary history classes.
I enjoyed all class discussions because everyone had their own say on various topics.

The blog post deadline. I know that we're supposed to have read stuff early and get things done early, but really who do you know in college that gets things done early....it's a very small pool of people. If the deadline were say 10pm or even better of Midnight that would have been so much better.

Most of the early books were difficult to read. I hated especially "The Many Headed Hydra", even though I feel like that set the tone for the rest of the course.
Truthfully, I did not entirely enjoy the student presentations. While it is a useful tool to see who read the material and who didn't. It's difficult for them to conduct discussions without further research in order to fully present the material in a historic context. Without presenting further research, it is rather easy for misinformation to be spread.

How we were all able to talk about the subject for almost the entire class and the comradely of the students.
I did not like some of the choices for the readings, and the fact that we had to read a large amount of pages and only getting maybe one day to read them. I wish there were a little more time for that, as well as some of the book choices. For example, "In the Devil's Snare" by Mary Beth Norton is a provocative book giving a detailed account of what the Salem Witch Trials were really like, but the book is almost impossible to read. That, and only having a day or two at the most to read it creates a stressful experience in reading the book, even though its enjoyable. Other than some of the reading choices, I feel like we did not reach the exact time period we were supposed to end in, so im not sure where we are ending as a course.
Having the discussion post due at 8:00 was a bit of a challenge
I would have liked a little more teacher presentation than student led ones. Sometimes the teacher has more knowledge about subject matter and a broader historical context than a student.

Great course with great professor. Take if you can. At first, I thought I wasn't interested in Pre-Civil War History but after learning it through Brandy's lens, I find it an invaluable course.
I can kinda see why it's important for the majors and minors, but I didn't like it. I felt like I had to work so hard for a class that I'm not sure I'm going to be using a lot (because I'm only a minor). But I suppose it could be worse.

I liked some of the books that we read about I would have liked to learn more about the creation of America's government. I think that is the thing we did not cover. I understand that America has done a lot of problems in the past but I just feel like this class covered everything problematic about America's history. Learning about problems are important but it is physically and emotionally depressed as I would go home crying about why our country was so f-ed up. Some books about America's achievements would have been good so that everything was not so negative.

I wish there was more assignments with variety. I feel like the entire semester of just writing discussions posts through Laulima was really boring. I wish we had more writing assignments so that we could improve in our writing skills. Iʻve had the privilege of being in her Eng100 class for my first semester here at UH, and now iʻm taking this class from her right before I graduate this semester.Though she was always great, Itʻs been nice to see how she has grown as an instructor from then till now. Sheʻs very approachable, non-threatening, and has a humble soul. She teaches with a quiet strength that makes for a comfortable environment to share our thoughts.

Professor McDougall is an excellent educator and the University of Hawaii is lucky to have her. I really enjoyed her class as she made the topics interesting and manageable. She helped students see varying view points and I appreciated her passion for the topics she taught. I could tell that she was excited to teach everyday and that is a rare quality in my opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed her assignments as they were eye-opening and thought-provoking. She is very easy to follow when she is lecturing and I like that she really takes the time to explain concepts thoroughly.
Brandy has a warm and positive ora that makes students gravitate to her. She has a really mellow attitude and she is very approachable. If you need help with anything, she is always there and willing to help us.

I liked how straight forward and well organized her course was. She teaches exactly what you need to know and is open minded towards others beliefs and views.
I like that we weren't learning straight from a text book. We watched films and videos and had speakers come in that really helped relay the information first-hand.
i like watching the different videos she portrayed in class. the assignments she assigned were interesting and fun. it made us think about things we normally see every day and how those images are portraying indigenous peoples and what that image says. class discussion were good because we got to hear everyoneʻs opinions
The assignments really made you think about what you learn in class and how you can apply it to everyday topics. I feel that classes that can make you think even outside the classroom are the most rewarding as you learn to apply educational topics to everyday life. I liked the different indigenous populations that we learned about as I felt it helped me understand multiple cultures which made me more well-rounded as a student of similarities and differences between cultures.
the small assignments - i.e. cutting up brochures or watching films and doing an analysis of how it might be problematic to indigenous population. I also liked the films that we watched in class.
I loved how I learned something new everyday in this class. There wasn't one day I felt like I had wasted.
As a person from the east coast of the united states, Brandy taught me so many things I had never known about. every day I was excited to come to class and learn what new things she had to teach me. it was always presented so well and she made it so interesting. She does not push her personal biases, because i have no idea what her's are, but rather she shows you the facts and lets you decide what you want. very hard to do for such sensitive topics! Even if someone said something that was completely out of line for the topic,Brandy always let people have thier personal opinions without showing hers or pushign them onto someone.

The class discussions were often large. I feel as though the class size should be smaller so that more intimate discussions may take place.

I enjoyed all aspects of the class. But I do think that having more directed discussions about certain issues would help to make it even more exciting! Classroom discussions, maybe sitting in a circle, and everyone bouncing ideas off of one and another would probably make for an eye opening class environment! The course is full of interesting topics, opinions and viewpoints.

AMST is not my major so I am not too interested in it but she was such an amazing professor that there was nothing I did not like about the course.
Sometimes the readings were a bit tough, and I found that some of the discussion topics were not very engaging.
I'm not a huge fan of presentations in front of the class but other than that, I liked everything about the class. I recommended it to many students already.
There is a lot of reading, but not too much to complain about.

The course was pretty interesting. I took a course similar back home but it didn't transfer properly so there was a bit of overlap. But the course of its own volition was well structured and informative of important, rarely talked about issues.

Great. I really learned a lot about things that normally did not bother me before, but with this new insight that I gained, I'm finding myself getting involved more and more into narratives that usually was not there before.
Everyone should take this class! I learned so much and feel like the knowledge I gained is something I can use everyday in my life. There's too much good stuff to learn to pass this class up.

awesome leader was bummed vernadette wasn't going to be my teacher but her replacement was turned out great. brandy is friendly very approachable. the only thing she wants is for your project to be a success and shes there with awesome advice to make it happen. i was worried i would take any criticism bad and was so relieved when her suggestions made me feel good, like i was going in the right directions never negative. i was so amazed because i was really really concerned.
I think that Brandy McDougall is a very nice and understanding professor and she really encourages us that we can accomplish writing this research paper even though it has been really stressful to complete it this semester. I think that she is very helpful also with our research papers she gives excellent feedback and she is really supportive of all of our projects.
Liked this class a lot and found Brandy to be super helpful and available if you needed the extra help.

The flexibility of the project topic selection allowed our class to approach the senior thesis project from a multitude of perspectives. My classmates selected a wide variety of topics and presented them in a wide variety of styles.
I really enjoyed the peer review workshops. We were able to support each other by giving feedback on each other's research papers.
Everything. Brandy is a fun and easy going prof!! Would and have recommended her to all of my other friends in American Studies. :)

I liked the peer-review workshops where other students in the class got to read our research paper and give feedback on it, this was very helpful because your getting other people's perspective on how to make your paper better in ways that you would of not thought of yourself.
I liked the spacing out of the paper so that we turned things in as installments to the final project. It really helped in the end and prevented things from getting too stressful because of procrastination.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
All of the assignments. Many of them were useless of just busy work. Honestly peer reviews are not very helpful when working on a project of this size. I want the professor's opinion, not that of my class peer who knows nothing about the subject I am working on. Where I understand how peer reviews and comments can be helpful, they did nothing for me in this class.

I think that I liked everything about this course because it actually sets up a timeline and makes you turn in things instead of just letting you do things on your own, which is not a good thing for me. I think that if we were just allowed to do things on our own that we would just try to do everything last minute and we would be in a lot of trouble because this type of project is something that you can't just do all last minute.

The course is necessary, but it could have done without so many peer reviews and assignments like primary source analysis, which we are not even really using in our papers. I learned much of this in high school and felt that much of the course was a waste of my time.
Fun class good people
This class has really helped me to improve my organization when tackling a writing project. The way the class is structured helps to make a daunting project manageable. I will take what I have learned in both 480 & 481 and use it my future academic endeavors.
Overall, this course was excellent. Being a required course for all AMST majors, everything that we did throughout the semester made sure we were on track so that we would not fall behind.
AWESOME! :) Stimulates you to think creatively and not just about writing a paper. Although making a documentary is hard, it allows students to have more flexibility when it comes to making a project. :)

I liked this course because it's very helpful in actually setting deadlines for you to do a little bit of your paper and turn in things instead of being on our own and trying to get everything done at one time. I think this process makes it not as stressful as if we were just on our own and wasnt given any guidance or help with this research project.

Passionate about the material, and a very effective instructor.
She is a great teacher. Really excited and passionate about teaching. I really liked her as an instructor. However I think the class was a little slow and boring, maybe the 480 and 481 classes can be combined? Its not the instructors fault because she was using a syllabus from the previous teacher. Brandy made the best out of the class though, always encouraging us and giving great insight when asked for help. Im really glad she is part of the department. How slow it was made me question the point of the course sometimes.
A lot of reading--the essays and materials in the beginning of the course were hard to read and understand but really preferred and liked the novels and collections of poems better Weekly laulima assignments--1 response a week is not too bad, & doing a discussion question in class is okay, too, but having to type 2 discussion questions per week on laulima is hard to remember to keep up with when we are thinking about the responses

The professor is great but the course needs to be more stimulating.

Awesome professor who is easy to talk to, and strives for healthy discussion of assigned materials, and creates an environment of intellectual safety. However the course was a little misleading and personally left a lot to be desired. It would have been better if assigned materials would have included a wide variety of different perspectives of women in U.S. literature, and authors of different backgrounds and different ages.

It can be improved by having more assignments due, maybe by the end of the course we can have half of the paper written instead of just the introduction.
Maybe instead of having students come up with discussion questions ourselves, pose a discussion question(s) for students to think about before we come to class so we have key things to think about during our reading assignments and then we come to class ready to discuss. For responses, maybe clarify what to write about, such as respond on a passage or quote from the reading.

Brandy is an awesome teacher! Really like her, she should teach more classes for the department!
Professor really well rounded on course material and compassionate about the subject. A small class setting also sets up well for discussion.

She is an excellent instructor. It is evident that she is very knowledgable in her area. She has a very friendly and approachable personality. When I needed help, she did her best to accommodate me into her schedule.
she is one of the nicest teachers i have had yet. Although, we focused more on our projects this semester, i learned a lot of ways to appraoch research. Thank you Brandy for a great semester.
Professor McDougall is a very kind and accommodating professor who truly has every student's best interest at heart. More than that, though, she is a very knowledgeable educator and it's clear that she has a lot of experience conducting research and writing proposals. I would definitely recommend others to take her courses.

As a new teacher I was worried that she might let students walk all over here or she might not really know what she was talking about it. However, that was not the case, she was a great teacher who knew how to teach the class at an effective level.

16. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I like every aspect of the course. I found the library vists very useful. I now know where to find sources for my research project.
I liked the guest speakers. The course was very organized. I enjoyed doing the small papers compared to longer ones.
My favorite aspect of the course was having speakers come into class to share their experiences with research and writing their various dissertations and books. There is an incredible wealth of knowledge in the American Studies department and it's great that they're able to share some of it with the class. I also thoroughly enjoyed the research aspects of the class. Going to Hamilton and learning about the different resources that are available to us was fascinating. I didn't realize how extensive Hamilton really was until I took this course.
The format at the beginning of the course (when read an article by a member of the AMST faculty, then we have full access to them) is by far my favorite part of the course. It is helpful to realize the potential areas of study available with an American Studies degree.
I like the fact that instead of just letting us work on things ourselves we have a set date to turn everything in by so that we dont procrastinate on anything and that we just turn things in a little at a time I think that is more better than just having everything thrown at you and you have to get everything done at one time

I liked the preparation for writing a thesis paper / project for the next semester. It will really help and give us a head start. I really really like touring the library and going there weekly to learn about the different aspects and how to use it. No other class has ever done that before and it was beyond helpful. Probably the most valuable aspect of this class.

She broke down the Senior Capstone Project awesomely!!!!!! Because we did the project in parts it wasnʻt overwhelming and allowed us to work on bits and pieces of our project to better focus on what we wanted to actually cover in our project.

I think Professor McDougall did her best to make the course interesting, however, it was a course learning how to research which to a certain extent can only be interesting.
Wish some people would appreciate class more and come to class.
The text assigned for the course, "The Craft of Research" was my least favorite part of the course. The colloquial style and the format/ organization of the book made it difficult to read.
I dont really like doing presentations because I get nervous talking in front of the class but Im surprised at myself when I did my presentation it was not that bad because I did not even look at my cards once I remembered what I had to say
The peer work shops. I am not quite comfortable with critiquing other students.
It is the presentation I like the least.
the format was somewhat awkward. i feel like it was backwards. it could be tweeked so that we get more self exploration done in the first month. then learn about the types of methodology and research tools to use to investigate our interests.
Reading articles and talking to speakers at the beginning of the semester, I am not quite sure of the point of it. I wish we could have focused more on their research methods than the articles themselves. I would have liked to talk to the writers about how they did their research and writing, not necessarily about the subject/topic of their writing. Also it would have been nice to have been informed earlier that we have to keep all of our assignments for a final portfolio. Was not informed of this until the end of the semester. Also we did MANY peer evaluations in class. I did not like these. Perhaps doing a couple is okay. But I would much rather have feedback from the professor who knows more than my peers do about researching and possible topics. It gets tedious constantly correcting others work in class and simply answering questions about the content of their papers. Saying what is and is not in someone's paper is not beneficial. They know what they did and did not include in their writing and do not need me to tell them that. Could be better use of class time. Also we went over many things in class that were not beneficial at all, like how to do a PowerPoint presentation of organize a short paper. I learned all of these things years ago and do not need to be taught them again in my senior year of college. Perhaps focus more on research aspects than the simple things that we all should / do already know.

This course is perfect for preparing students to complete their capstone projects. It gives students all of the tools necessary to not only choose a topic, but explore it to it's very depths. I look forward to taking the second part of the course and working on my project.
This is an excellent course. It really shows the AMST majors the level of support and care offered to them in the AMST department. This course makes it easy to be successful with our senior theses.
I think this course is needed because it teaches you how to prepared to write your paper and gives you research skills such as how to use the library and what is the differences between a primary and secondary source and it also helps us to start working on our actual paper a little by little, which is a working process but at least we get some things done this semester and we might use it in our paper next semester when we have to acutally write it
I was scared of this course because its a thesis class, but Brandy made the class fun andy entertaining.
