I love the in class discussion we had.
8. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
The lengthy readings. Not because I don't enjoy reading but because the reading is very long and wordy for my personal liking. I would rather have something that is condensed and to the point.

7. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
I found the different curriculum and history facts that can be applied to teaching very valuable.
the weekly news assignments
I learned a lot about the history of education in America.
The Proffesor she was complely Skilled in the subject.
The videos helped me understand a lot. I guess it is because I am more of a visual learner.
I thought Professor Lum was a very democratic teacher. She was more than fair when she graded our papers. She always encouraged us to share our ideas.
I think learning the history of education has helped my understanding of where education has come and where it is at currently.
I learned a lot more from the Videos then the articles. I felt the articles weren't written in English most of the times, and it was extremely hard to understand, however, I really enjoyed watching the videos. It made the course more interesting and I got out a lot from them.
I find everything valuable. it was all nice to learn. I especially liked learning about the different pedagogues so i can become aware of where i stand.
What I found most valuable and helpful from the course was that of the information from the texts and also the vidoes that we watched. Another thing was the ability to give presentations that helped me learn easier and also by reporting to the class about our education system today it keep us future teachers on track on the way our systems are changing.
I think that knowing the foundations of education and seeing how it relates to education today really helps with understanding the system but I am not sure how it is applicable to the field we are going into unless we were determined to be part of the board of education or of high status.
8. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
I though that some of the readings were very repetative and time consuming therefore were not valuable. They did not all help expand content.
It has been a struggle to see the real life application this course and it's content will have once I begin teaching. The design of the lessons did not allow for a connection from memorized knowledge to teaching application. Also, much of the course and weekly lessons have been very unorganized.
the text is really boring
I found that not having lectures about the chapters and readings made it harder for me to grasp the concepts more fully. I found myself not fully immersed in the subject matter. Dr. Lum has the knowledge about the topics and the sections, I believe her class would be more effective if she spent more time lecturing instead of having students give presentations.
Nothing. I think this is an important class for future teachers to take.
The time spent in the classrom it should have been a normal two or three meetings per week,I really had a horrible time in the class because of the one class period per week.
Having the students present on the readings may not be so helpful because the professor understands the text better than the students.
Nothing. It was pure joy. This is my first semester here at Manoa and Professor Lum has made it a successful transition from KCC.
I appreciate all the material that was presented in the class, however I feel overwhelmed by all that was presented.
I would say the PowerPoint presentations. I felt that they were a waist of time. I didn't understand much from the presentations.

14. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
...that she is a good educator. She is very informative. She was a bit hard to hear once in a while and she did use quite a bit of large and complex words that I did not know. She explained the definitions and meanings when asked although did not really clarify definitions too well. Other than definitions, the concepts were well taught.
She is really smart and wants us to do well but she is a soft talker and the text is hard to get through
She is a very knowledgeable professor who knows her subject matter. It is just her teaching style that I didn't find very effective. I would've liked to hear more from her on every subject and have us SUPPLEMENT her lectures on topics.
She's a nice person, but she talks too soft. I could barely hear what she was saying and sometimes I couldn't hear at all. She can be unprepared for class and took a while to set up her laptop most of the time.
A great teacher stuck in a bad orgazinational system.
She is very well prepared though.
a superb teacher. I will highly recommend her to my friends. I will jump at the opportunity to take her class again.
She knew the subject area well. She helped me understand the subject better. She was welcome to questions and encouraged class disscussions.
Liked the class. Professor Lum is a great professor who really knows the course material and is good in getting her students to understand and get passionate about the subject.
she knows the content very well and encourages students to discuss and voice their opinions. I believe that these kind of discussions benefit everyone so that we can see different view points.
Learned alot aobut the history of educaiton and how the past has brought to us the current education system and also the different ways of teaching. I feel that I learned alot and really enjoyed the class.
good. She definitely has a different take on teaching compared to other professors in other disciplines. She really encourages opening up discussion with the class and learning as a whole. I feel that maybe more content can come directly from her instead of the class doing the presentations and videos.

19. My overall evaluation of this course is...
This course was difficult to grasp with my background of history and understanding causes and affects. It was difficult but achievable to understand the key concepts. The course itself is a bit boring.
This was my least favorite course out of the six course I am taking this semester. As an COE requirement, one would hope and expect for connections to teaching and creating lesson plans. I feel that I was just expected to memorize historical facts about the public school system and teaching methods, but feel little connection to how this information will be useful or applied when I become a teacher in my content area.
it's pretty long, the classroom is cold and the text, though relevant, is really boring. There's gotta be a better textbook! Ms Lum is nice and she really knows her stuff. I think I would have liked her class better if she lectured more and had less student presentations. Also, I think she should speak into a microphone because she is hard to hear sometimes, even if you sit at the front of the classroom. She gives good feedback but she doesn't give assignments back quickly. Also, there were some problems with the laulima site in the grading section where things appeared more than once or not at all.
I found this course to be less interesting than I thought it would be. I think I would have been able to grasp and understand more if Dr. Lum spent more time giving us the information HERSELF through lecture and activities.
This was a good class to take. I also feel it's important because teachers need to know what has happened in the past because a lot of the same struggles might happen again in the future.
The semminar template made me quit COE.
This class is okay.
I realized that the material that I've learned from this course has affected my ideas on education. I feel that I have acquired the knowledge that Professor Lum has taught.
I liked the class over all. I learned alot about the history of education.
Liked this course. Really gave me passion for becoming a teacher. It made me question my own opinions about the educational system. I'm more confused about what I feel is the right thing to do as a teacher, but I feel that is a good thing. It has made me question my own teaching methods, values, and opinions.
very good. the readings were sometimes hard to understand and get through, but i appreciate everything
Learned alot aobut the history of educaiton and how the past has brought to us the current education system and also the different ways of teaching. I feel that I learned alot and really enjoyed the class.
good. I think the class and how it was conducted was good but could be better. It was very difficult having it only once a week. The information was not as retained and i think that played a role.
20. Other comments:
;)...Good overall but maybe needs a bit more activities which applies the learned concepts into our classrooms in the future.
The class was too cold. Also, there wasn't enough space because the arrangement of the tables and chairs kept changing and it was hard for everyone to find a seat, but that isn't beverly's fault.
None.
Give her a raise. i don't mind the tuition increase if you give her a raise. You need more teachers like her. She has inspired me to be a better student, teacher, and person.

I found the history and evolution on Education in the US valuable.
Group presentations; I learned that I need to be comfortable speaking to the audience (i.e., classmates and teacher) and in front of the video camera.
being able to teach portion of the class. This was valuable to me because I felt as if I understood the material more because I had to present information to other students. I felt as if I was going to be doing presentations for large groups of people, this type of learning via presentations and positive feedback would allow me understand the inner workings of teaching. I liked the overall structure of the class because it was a safe environment to speak about my ideas, and explain how my personal experiences related to the subject.
Communication with fellow classmates.
I thought the reflective papers were pretty interesting to do (even though it can be tedious and long). But I thought the papers were a really good way to reflect on the reading materials and apply it to our own experiences and/or present times.
The abundance of information and reading material went beyond exception. Thank you for cutting our textbook costs. Professor Lum is a wealth of knowledge. I can apply what was discussed into social work and expanded critical thinking into my personal views
8. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
I didn't like the fact that this class finished late at night.

the work load that she give is more then what we really cover in class
-- snipped --
She is a knowledgeable and fabulous teacher
She dressed properly and professional. She always brought her Mac laptop and was prepared to teach her prospective students. She's soft spoken, often times I couldn't hear what said. And, sends e-mails to her students often. She's a wonderful professor.
I like professor Lum. She comes from a place of caring for her students. She comes with a calming personality. Always coming up with an alternatives and working with the students instead of trying to force feed information. Well thought out structure to the class. overall a great teacher, kind and caring professor that wants students to be able to learn. My initial impression was correct. Professor Lum knew her subject, and wanted to know the students well. The initial exercise of memorizing people's names and introduction was a great ice breaker for the initial day of class. One thing that stuck out that showed that she cared for her students is that she would be smiling as much as she could regardless of the situation going on. I felt that she continued on a daily basis to connect with the students, being positive, and being open to student's input.
-- snipped --
I think Professor Lum is a good teacher and taught this course well. And I do feel that she is very knowledgeable of the course material and enthusiastic about what she does. Sometimes she was a little vague on assignments, but I think that was easily solved when people asked her for clarification (and she did so).
Professor Lum was very approachable and more than willing to help her students. I wished the semester had gone on longer to incorporate and digest the wealth of information. Professor Lum exemplified the focus and vision of an educator and truly knows her "stuff". I would take another class with Professor Lum.

GREAT
Awesome!
Good course, this broadened my idea of what education was, is and how education has transformed over the centuries. Some of the information I will eventually forget over time. One thing that will stay with me is that education is always an evolving process. Information will always be in the hands of the people teaching it, and it is a teacher's responsibility to express it the best way she or he can in any situation.
I was looking forward to this class but the way it was presented was poor and I did not learn much other than J Lum is to be avoided for any future classes. This is not because her class is hard but because she is a terrible teacher. On a final note I would like to say that as a person (outside of class material) I liked her which makes all these comments all the more difficult.
Really good. I understand why this course is valuable for the College of Education.

Covering the syllabus that was predetermined, with the assumption this is the information is needed for all the students, will be a constant deterrent to progressive education and student ownership of learning. At a grad level we all have varied interests and the student should be able to explore how those interests deeper by tying them into a basic outline of educational theory. Professors must be given the freedom to get to know their students so they can co-construct the appropriate syllabus for each individual. Such an approach would lead to producing commmited and passionate learners.

14. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
I think that she is extremely knowledgable about the materials and theories covered in this class. Classroom managemement could be better. For example, it would be nice to know to read a certain article because we would discuss it in small groups and then as a big group in class. A lot of the time, it was one person talking in class, and the rest of the class listening for the long class. At the very beginning of the semester, we started working on things to think about the interview, but then we did not get a chance to do it because we ran out of time. That was sort of frustrating. It was good that she was flexible, though, and cut the losses when realizing that time was running out and we did not have time to cover all that was originally on the syllabus. I think she tries hard and is very knowledgable about the educational theories.

Good
Well-versed with the subject and flexible, but a bit unorganized. More explicit instructions about the assignments would have been useful. The instructor was well-prepared but not as organized.
Felxible. Listens to students.

Given her knowledge of the material that was presented, I feel that it was qualitative. There is a problem with Laulima (downloading) this caused confusion during this semester and could effect the outcome of the Grades!

Good course and the instructor is patient and helpful. In the future, the class should incorporate the schedule assignments and adhere to their deadlines.

Excellent
it was a great course only real problem was using Laulima to turn in work...
A introduction to progressive education through a traditional teaching methodology.
As I previously stated. . . . I was experiencing problems as well as other students with Laulima. . . the paper's would come out garbled (my experience). . . . the CRC lab was the most problematic when sending data to my instructors.
