18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I don't have any ideas, I thought the class ran smoothly and perfectly.
studying for the final exam is proving difficult without additional readings.
Keep the slides for all of the lectures on Laulima
Study guide was practically everything we learned. It wasn't a guide, it just showed us that we needed to study everything we learned. In addition, some things were so vague on the powerpoint slides and showed on the exams.
David Haymer is an excellent instructor.
Some of the homework assignments didn't seem like they were very important to any ideas or developments of the course. The last assignment especially seemed almost tacked on as an after- thought. What if "this" happened? And it didn't seem as impactful or engaging as making that consent form earlier this semester.
No recommendation for improvement. Dr. Haymer was a great instructor, very passionate about the course content, and expanded my knowledge of genetics. I like how he simplified the concepts and made them easier to understand. I have taken other courses (such as BIOL 304) which cover similar material, yet I found that he was able to clarify certain concepts and that I actually understood the material better after taking this course.
N/A he is a very good teacher.

I really wished that there was more discussion and debate that went on in the class concerning ethical issues. But I think that Dr. Haymer did try his best to stimulate conversation, the class did not chose to participate that much. Maybe there is a way to incorporate some small percentage of the class to class participation to further encourage people to participate. Or maybe have people speak on what we had wrote about for homework assignments to hear other people's point of view. Even if it is just randomly picking names from a hat.
Stimulate more class discussion
None. I think Dr. Haymer teaches this class very well.
Though most of the time it was fine, there were occasions when it was hard to keep up with the slides and so I missed things that needed to be filled in

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The ethics and implication for the future.
lectures were always interesting and related to real life situations.
I liked how he gave a study guide for the exams. It would be better to receive them more than a week earlier.
The informed consent assignment. This assignment taught me all the parts of an Informed Consent document and is applicable to my professional development.
Interactive powerpoint. Fill-in the blanks so that we were paying attention.
His lectures are fantastic
How Dr. Haymer provided us pdf files of each chapter we were being taught. Along with the powerpoint slides the pdf files helped me get a better understanding of each topic we were learning and it really helped me get a better grade on my second exam. The first exam i focused on memorizing the terms in each powerpoint but that was ineffective and cost me my grade to decrease.
Learning more about genetics and the science behind it was very exciting. I am very happy to have taken this course.
I liked how Dr. Haymer engaged the students and encouraged critical thinking, especially in regards to ethical dilemmas. Also, I really enjoyed the guest lectures on the Hawaii Innocence Project and genetic counseling.
I had never studied genetics too much, and I really liked the class and found it very interesting.
I liked how Dr. Haymer could easily give current examples about the topics being discussed. It showed how he had a broad spectrum and how up to date he is staying within the field.
Learning about how different genes can cause different defects.
Mr. Haymer is very passionate about this topic and it sparks interest in a lot of the students.
I really liked the topics that were discussed in the class it really got me thinking more about the ethical issues in biotechnology.
Guest speakers were really great!
Learning about the ethical issues that can arise in the field of genetics.
When provided, the textbook chapters were great. They were really engaging and interesting to read; it would've been great to have them for the last section.

25. Other comments:
Dr. Haymer is a great teacher and the course is a great broad subject to science majors. I like all the ethical debates and the rigorous science from the cellular and molecular basis. I would highly recommend the course and the teacher to another student. This course and his teaching style has made me consider earning a graduate degree in a related field, like cell and molecular biology.
class time is less than ideal, many of us found it difficult to pay attention since it was a late afternoon class.
Some of the assignments, such as Assignment 4 ("Create a law...") was inapplicable to my professional development and did not seem to relate to a "science" course. Too much of the course content seemed focused on the ethics of science and less about the science of genetics.
Dr. Haymer knows exactly how to deliver his lecture in a way that is very understandable. I was able to learn alot from just a single lecture hour than a whole semester with other instructors.
The class seemed less engaging than I anticipated. I thought there would be a few more class discussions.
I've taken a few E designated courses before but could not stomach them. They tended to be preachy and to reward the student for adopting the beliefs of the professor. I loved this class. And it very much required me to think about ethical behavior.
NA
Good luck completing your book Dr. Haymer, it was off to a really good start and was a nice complement to what was discussed in class.
Great class, Professor Haymer is very smart and communicated in a way that we could easily understand the course material!

nothing at all. he is a great well rounded professor and offers a decent challenge in his course load which causes me to think more critically and pay attention.
Try to incorporate, more for the students to actively participate in the lectures.
Student interaction
i liked this course. only problem i had with it was the scheduled time, 3-4:15, after a long day of classes it was hard focusing in class
Dr. Haymer can continue to teach this course accordingly. I think bringing more guest speakers would enhance the topic area.
The workbook or chapters helped a lot to understand topics. It was was upsetting when there was no more, because every bit of information was very useful in understanding the material. Maybe finish writing some, I know it takes time, but its worth it. I loved reading the chapters!! Tests were a little hard.
I think the assignments, although very though provoking, could have integrated the class material a little better. I also think a little more focus on genetics would be nice, but I'm not sure if that's in the focus of the class.
Towards the second half of the course, there was no longer any accompanied reading but was mostly based on the slides. This made it slightly a bit more difficult to follow along than it was in the beginning of the course.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
It was very interesting, enjoyed the course layout and how amazingly passionate and knowledgable he is on subject, probably one of the best bio prof. at UH MANOA. Overall satisfied with this course and should be taught more often as it is an important subject in both natural and social science majors applications.
Overall, I like the various topics that was covered in the course and was able to look at the topics from different perspective.
You can tell that Dr. Haymer truly cares about students' learning. He encourages us to become more familiar with certain medical conditions or ethical issues by having us write a paper on a topic of our choice. He's sooo nice, he even printed out a couple of articles for us to help us get started. : )
The topic of genetic testing and its ethical issues involved.
the material is very interesting, haymer demonstrates a wonderful teaching method and very simple, clear, dense material. i felt as though haymer was very friendly and i was never intimidated to ask a question or approach him.
Great course. Option of final paper or final test.
write a paper instead of taking a mc/short answer final exam. not cumulative. interesting information was learned
I liked how he structured his lectures. He was engaged with the class and asked for our feedback on topics.
Lectures notes are really well done in understanding topics. Beginning of class the chapter or workbook he sent out for the topics was really helpful!
I really enjoyed the variety in the class and how much it covered. I enjoyed the discussion of the ethical questions and how I was equipped with the knowledge on how I could decide myself.
I really enjoyed the skills he used in simplifying the course content. Additionally, the assignments given in class were very helpful in making you apply the ideas discussed in class with your own personal beliefs and experiences.

Dr. Haymer is an excellent professor who is well prepared for all lectures. He is very knowledgeable about all of the topics we covered over the semester. He encourages students to really think about ethical issues that our country is dealing with. Really nice guy with a good heart! : )
Great class.
Haymers methods and personality rank him high in my list of favorite biology professors.
I liked Dr. Haymer's textbook. It was very easy to understand, the points were clear and to the point. I also liked the summary sections.
Thanks for teaching the course.
thank you for teaching me genetics this semester dr haymer
I would recommend students in taking this class and Dr. Haymer in general. I think he should be teaching the required Biology classes as he is a good lecturer and pays attention to the student's needs.
Offer study (review) sessions before exams or every two weeks to ensure students are understanding all topics. It can be a TA, we don't judge!
I think I would like the paper option of the course to be used as extra- credit for students who opt-in to take the exam. It may give a fair advantage to the students who actually make an effort to come to class towards the end of the semester.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I understand that Dr. Haymer is working in writing a textbook for the class. I kind of wish it was completed (although I understand that writing takes a lot of time); the chapters that we did receive really helped to supplement anything you might've missed in lecture.
I found that the tests were not particularly challenging but at the same time, the goal is for us to know the important parts of the material and not to get hung up on details that we will likely forget a week later, so I do believe that was achieved.
it feels like a fast paced lecture everyday, so i'm just trying to get down info vs understanding the subject.
Maybe a little more indication of what is important to know for the course and what is simply facts he would like to share.
I think it's fairly well taught.
providing more written materials. I know he is in the process of writing the book; however, I found the chapters with written material easier to understand with the lectures.
Videos would be good to add variety to the lectures.
I didn't have any problem with the way this course was taught.
This course would be better if there was more discussion. It seems we just had a few minutes of a handful of classes where actual discussions took place for more than 2 or 3 minutes. Sometimes lectures went into a lot more detail than we were expected to know which made studying and trimming the content of lectures difficult.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Dr. Haymer is very passionate about the subject area, which gets the student interested in it as well. He also encourages critical thought on subject areas that you wouldn't normally think about, even the controversial ones.
Overall the lectures are very easy to follow and keep you captivated by having you write in certain notes from the powerpoint that were not available online. Everything was very clear and I liked that he used all different forms of sharing knowledge - bullet points, graphs, images, charts, etc. I also really enjoyed the guest speakers because it reminds you what career opportunities there are in this field of study.
the study guides were very helpful and went along with what was on the tests.
power points. also his text was very easy to understand.
I really liked the GMO conversation
The course covered even the most basic concepts of Biology, allowing students to refresh their memory and understand the new concepts that are introduced.
Dr. Haymer's explanations were clear and he often provoked interesting ethical questions.
I liked the lectures, they were fun to listen to.
I really liked the real world examples of the concepts we were learning about. The content of class was very interesting to me.
Dr. Haymer made learning enjoyable in his lectures because he explained everything clearly and thoroughly. It was extremely easy to have interesting conversations on many topics with him in class.

25. Other comments:
I like that his presentations are kept pretty short so it's not an overload of information. I also appreciated the guest speakers he invited to class: it adds variety to the class and makes a greater impact to hear their personal experiences in specific fields.
This course was very interesting to me as a whole, I enjoyed it.
no other comments
I really liked the guest speaker about dna profiling/ innnocence project. More guest speakers would make class even more interesting.

17. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Narrow the focus of different topics, have an easier to understand/study powerpoint, have a better variety of readings
I expected there to be a lot more debate and active participation in the class. Instead there were plenty of times when Dr. Haymer would say that we should just think about stuff on our own time, or asked us if anyone would like to share their opinions. It would be a more engaging class if there was some Socratic methods going on, and have people called out to give their stand points.
Yes, he made the course easy to learn and understand.
He can be a bit more specific about the information on the exams for that there were details that were went over extensively in lectures but were not on the exams.
I have no suggestions. He did an excellent job.
Lectures are a bit mundane; perhaps if he encouraged more class participation by asking specific students questions the class would be more engaging.
He made it easy to grasp concepts and understanding of this subject. I learned more in his class than I did in my previous biology classes. Great teacher!
make it a more discussion based class rather than lecture style
It would be good to emphasize the important things that will probably be on the test.

22. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I liked the flow of the topics being discussed. They all seemed to slowly build on our understanding of genetics and ethical issues that pertained to them. I also liked that Prof. Haymer left some points out of the powerpoints, it seemed to make me more engaged and pay attention more to each slide. I also liked the option of writing the essay instead of taking a final. That is an interesting way to make a student learn more about what is taught in class on their own.
I enjoyed pretty much all aspects of the course, but it was very interesting to learn about informed consent documents and fun to write up our own informed consent documents. I also enjoyed hearing from the genetic counselors and learning about their specific field of work.
I loved the lectures concerning ethics and genetics. I liked that he opened the class up for discussion about certain issues.
Everything was described very basically, without too many overwhelming details. It makes for a great introductory course, but I like how the material is presented so that it is easy to understand
The fact that Dr. Haymer pointed out mostly the basics of the course and only what he wanted us to learn, nothing unnecessary.
The DNA fingerprinting and forensics related information.
I thoroughly enjoyed learning about chromosomal disorders, how inheritance works, and the concepts of viruses. Very interesting and applicable to life!
Pace of learning material was good, didn't try to cover too much in one class
Most of the biology info.
Love the fact we didnt have to buy a textbook since he used materials from his own (the one he is writing). But I mostly appreciated his ability to communicate and facilitate this subject so I can walk away with valuable information still retained.
Guest lecture
book provided by Haymer was good
When we had ethical discussions about certain things in genetics.

17. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
This is a very good course and David Haymer is a great professor but he is covering the whole book and some of the material does noe pertain to the class. He could of cut those chapters out and focused more on the Cell and Molecular level.
I believe that is not necessary because the way he teaches is already very easy to understand and straight to the points. I know the summer time is very short, thus he may have gone over some important materials pretty fast and that is totally understandable. I really enjoy your way of teaching, Prof. Haymer. With a clear voice and appropriate volume, you have successfully delivered your lectures to the students.
For such a small class additional homework assignments that actually contribute to the grade percentage would have helped students.
Very fast paced but understandable because it is summer. Very hard to keep up.
The class was extremely enjoyable, but there was a lot of information covered with the amount of time given (summer session). I would have much rather had more homework assignments than quizzes since there was just way too much to absorb.
Personally, I don't feel Professor Haymer needs to improve in any of his teaching methods. The way he presented information in powerpoints was clear and concise, and he was very understanding in errors made on quizzes/exams. It's the students responsibility to absorb and grasp the information, and he's doing more than enough on his part by providing study guides, accessibility to his powerpoints, and stressing important facts to know.
I'm sure the course is easier to handle during a regular semester.
Power points should reflect more key topics that will be tested with explanation not just listing the figure. Sample test problems or homework assignments similar to test or quiz questions should be made available for practice.

22. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The professor was very reasonable and welling to help if needed.
I love everything in this course! And I gotta say that the video named "The inner life of the cell" that he showed to us in the class is really cool. I mean, it actually gives me a glimpse at everything that we have been learning about the cells thus far. And I have to admit that it is the video that gives me the passion to continue on with my microbiology major path. Thanks a lot, Prof.Haymer!
Very visual.
David Haymer clarified on the difficult concepts in the course and I thought it was overall a great class.
Great power points as visuals, helped us understand/grasp the concepts.
Lectures were awesome and informative! Also has an amusing sense of humor.
I really enjoyed learning the material, which seems to be concepts from Biology 171, but a lot more in depth. The information that he taught us was very useful to me not only for fulfilling a graduation requirement, but also for use in future courses since I am pursuing a microbiology degree, and eventually entering the health field. I was able to grasp the concepts well.
Ilike that the powerpoint presentations forced us to fill in the blanks and pay attention.
The kindness and enthusiasm of Dr. Haymer and his availability to meet and discuss.

At the beginning of the course we had chapter readings, but from the middle of the course to the end we no longer had readings. I think the readings would have helped emphasis what was said in class.
I understand it is a biology class, but if he could take the course material a little away from specific biological terminology and focus more on the concepts that revolve around the field of genetics that are directly related to the ethics side of science
It would really help to have the slides before class so we can take a look at them before class and see what we will be learning about.

He can't, he is a great teacher. Every aspect of his teaching is effective and he is enthusiastic.
stop saying "we will get to that later", "We will come back to that" you answer that to 75% of the questions..
Even though there isn't a lot of time in the semester for the amount of material covered, it would have been interesting to go more in depth in some of the topics covered.

22. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Dr. Haymer is incredibly knowledgable and may be one of the best teachers I have ever had, he knows how to communicate and teach what he knows very very well.
Just the whole idea of genetics, which is why I signed up for the class.
interesting examples that brought the students towards a connection to the subject matter
The option to write a research paper in lieu of a taking a third exam.
Dr. Haymer is very understanding and easy to approach.
All of it, Haymer makes it very interesting.
I enjoyed the last half of the semester most, after we finished getting a background on genetics, DNA and inheritance and could get into more of the ethical issues
genetic
The lectures and powerpoints
He had a few people present their job to the class, i really thought that he went the extra mile in doing that. Also liked the fact that he had a lot of the lecture notes printed up for us or presented to us in Laulima, but were incomplete. Made me motivated to going to class.
I actually liked hearing the guest speakers/lecturers as well as the homework assignments which required us to use critical thinking.
Learning about various types of genetic applications

Excellent course. Haymer is brilliant
thankyou professor
It's kind of boring in the beginning of the class because a lot was repeat. I learned a lot of the early content in normal biology classes. The class room was very cold which is slightly distracting. I liked the fact that the teacher really tried to get the whole class into discussions. It didn't work all the time but he kept trying at least for the times when we did talk. I was sort of annoyed by one student who always had a comment or question everyday. I think what bothered me the most was the fact that he asked or said something very slowly.

17. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
He's a good teacher who respects other students perspectives as he is careful not to hurt anybodys views.
Goes rather fast, lots of material to cover which is good. Sometimes hard to copy all information from the powerpoints.
A tad monotone, but clearly a devoted scholar to the study and affects of genetics in our society.
I thought Haymer was an excellent teacher, very clear and easy to understand. I don't think he needs to make any improvements to this course.
I thought everything was fine.
Not much. The course was excellent.
The parts of the book we received were extremely helpful and written in a way that I could easily understand. Professor Haymer is currently finishing up that book, so I completely understand why we only received parts- but when that book is finished, it will be invaluable to the course!
Status quo would be fine.

22. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I liked all the different diverse topics we managed to cover in this class. Most of the stuff like DNA profiling and GMO I knew very little about before.
He wrote his written materials that he covers in class which makes it easy to follow what he's talking about.
The ethical concerns raised during class time and possibilities with genetics such as testing for diseases, mutations, and potential uses in the future like cloning for humans.
His passion through his lectures
I like how Hayer gave homework that makes you put yourself in situations that we have learned about. This gave me a better understanding of the controversies, as well as letting me know that there is a lot of ethical dilemmas with the concepts that we have learned.
I thought the professor made good use of powerpoint presentations and real world examples. I liked how he intergrated the ethical aspect of biology and genetics into the technical aspects of the field.
In general I liked that the course discussed and was related to current events.
The powerpoints and textbook handouts were very informative.
The final paper instead of a final exam was excellent.
The entire course was very interesting, Professor Haymer talked about very current and interesting topics in the field of genetics. The homework assignments were very useful and helped me to understand the information better. I also liked the parts of the book we did receive. Dr. Haymer also brought in a couple guest lecturers which was really interesting and informative!
Overall a very interesting/relevent course.

24. Other comments:
Dr. Haymer is great. I hope you get your textbook published soon.
Awesome course, I learned so much, yet it is a bit scary learning about genetics, I have to admit. Dr. Haymer's course is great and I would highly recomend to anyone- majors and nonmajors.
