I have no suggestions. He did an excellent job.

Lectures are a bit mundane; perhaps if he encouraged more class participation by asking specific students questions the class would be more engaging.

It would be good to emphasize the important things that will probably be on the test.

Yes, he made the course easy to learn and understand.

I expected there to be a lot more debate and active participation in the class. Instead there were plenty of times when Dr. Haymer would say that we should just think about stuff on our own time, or asked us if anyone would like to share their opinions. It would be a more engaging class if there was some Socratic methods going on, and have people called out to give their stand points.

He made it easy to grasp concepts and understanding of this subject. I learned more in his class than I did in my previous biology classes. Great teacher!

22. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

I thoroughly enjoyed learning about chromosomal disorders, how inheritance works, and the concepts of viruses. Very interesting and applicable to life!

Pace of learning material was good, didn't try to cover too much in one class

When we had ethical discussions about certain things in genetics.

The fact that Dr. Haymer pointed out mostly the basics of the course and only what he wanted us to learn, nothing unnecessary.

Everything was described very basically, without too many overwhelming details. It makes for a great introductory course, but I like how the material is presented so that it is easy to understand

I loved the lectures concerning ethics and genetics. I liked that he opened the class up for discussion about certain issues.

Love the fact we didnt have to buy a textbook since he used materials from his own (the one he is writing). But I mostly appreciated his ability to communicate and facilitate this subject so I can walk away with valuable information still retained.

I enjoyed pretty much all aspects of the course, but it was very interesting to learn about informed consent documents and fun to write up our own informed consent documents. I also enjoyed hearing from the genetic counselors and learning about their specific field of work.

I liked the flow of the topics being discussed. They all seemed to slowly build on our understanding of genetics and ethical issues that pertained to them. I also liked that Prof. Haymer left some points out of the powerpoints, it seemed to make me more engaged and pay attention more to each slide. I also liked the option of writing the essay instead of taking a final. That is an interesting way to make a student learn more about what is taught in class on their own.

17. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?

Power points should reflect more key topics that will be tested with explanation not just listing the figure. Sample test problems or homework assignments similar to test or quiz questions should be made available for practice.

Personally, I don't feel Professor Haymer needs to improve in any of his teaching methods. The way he presented information in powerpoints was clear and concise, and he was very understanding in errors made on quizzes/exams. It's the students responsibility to absorb and grasp the information, and he's doing more than enough on his part by providing study guides, accessibility to his powerpoints, and stressing important facts to know.

For such a small class additional homework assignments that actually contribute to the grade percentage would have helped students.

The class was extremely enjoyable, but there was a lot of information covered with the amount of time given (summer session). I would have much rather had more homework assignments than quizzes since there was just way too much to absorb.

I believe that is not necessary because the way he teaches is already very easy to understand and straight to the points. I know the summer time is very short, thus he may have gone over some important materials pretty fast and that is totally understandable. I really enjoy your way of teaching, Prof. Haymer. With a clear voice and appropriate volume,you have successfully delivered your lectures to the students.

I'm sure the course is easier to handle during a regular semester.

This is a very good course and David Haymer is a great professor but he is covering the whole book and some of the material does noe pertain to the class. He could of cut those chapters out and focused more on the Cell and Molecular level.

Very fast paced but understandable because it is summer. Very hard to keep up.

The kindness and enthusiasm of Dr. Haymer and his availability to meet and discuss.

I really enjoyed learning the material, which seems to be concepts from Biology 171, but a lot more in depth. The information that he taught us was very useful to me not only for fulfilling a graduation requirement, but also for use in future courses since I am pursuing a microbiology degree, and eventually entering the health field. I was able to grasp the concepts well.

Lectures were awesome and informative! Also has an amusing sense of humor.

I love everything in this course! And I gotta say that the video named "The inner life of the cell" that he showed to us in the class is really cool. I mean, it actually gives me a glimpse at everything that we have been learning about the cells thus far. And I have to admit that it is the video that gives me the passion to continue on with my microbiology major path. Thanks a lot, Prof.Haymer!

Even though there isn't a lot of time in the semester for the amount of material covered, it would have been interesting to go more in depth in some of the topics covered.

Email students back faster

At the beginning of the course we had chapter readings, but from the middle of the course to the end we no longer had readings. I think the readings would have helped emphasis what was said in class.

He can't, he is a great teacher. Every aspect of his teaching is effective and he is enthusiastic.

I understand it is a biology class, but if he could take the course material a little away from specific biological terminology and focus more on the concepts that revolve around the field of genetics that are directly related to the ethics side of science

It would really help to have the slides before class so we can take a look at them before class and see what we will be learning about.

It would be nice to be able to go on Laulima and see our grades throughout the semester. I also would love to have a few more people speak about the content of our lectures, i got a lot out of them.

I enjoyed the last half of the semester most, after we finished getting a background on genetics, DNA and inheritance and could get into more of the ethical issues

I actually liked hearing the guest speakers/lecturers as well as the homework assignments which required us to use critical thinking.

Just the whole idea of genetics, which is why I signed up for the class.

All of it, Haymer makes it very interesting.

He had a few people present their job to the class, i really thought that he went the extra mile in doing that. Also liked the fact that he had a lot of the lecture notes printed up for us or presented to us in Laulima, but were incomplete. Made me motivated to going to class.

Dr. Haymer is incredibly knowledgable and may be one of the best teachers I have ever had, he knows how to communicate and teach what he knows very very well.

At points, much of the copious amounts of terminology and the depth required of us on exams seemed hidden in lectures. With so much content being presented, I was left unsure how to go about studying and preparing myself for essays and tests without overloading myself with superfluous information

It's kind of boring in the beginning of the class because a lot was repeat. I learned a lot of the early content in normal biology classes. The class room was very cold which is slightly distracting. I liked the fact that the teacher really tried to get the whole class into discussions. It didn't work all the time but he kept trying at least for the times when we did talk. I was sort of annoyed by one student who always had a comment or question everyday. I think what bothered me the most was the fact that he asked or said something very slowly.

17. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?

A tad monotone, but clearly a devoted scholar to the study and affects of genetics in our society.

The parts of the book we received were extremely helpful and written in a way that I could easily understand. Professor Haymer is currently finishing up that book, so I completely understand why we only received parts- but when that book is finished, it will be invaluable to the course!

He's a good teacher who respects other students perspectives as he is careful not to hurt anybodys views.

Goes rather fast, lots of material to cover which is good. Sometimes hard to copy all information from the powerpoints.

I thought everything was fine.

I thought Haymer was an excellent teacher, very clear and easy to understand. I don't think he needs to make any improvements to this course.

His passion through his lectures

I thought the professor made good use of powerpoint presentations and real world examples. I liked how he intergrated the ethical aspect of biology and genetics into the technical aspects of the field.

The entire course was very interesting, Professor Haymer talked about very current and interesting topics in the field of genetics. The homework assignments were very useful and helped me to understand the information better. I also liked the parts of the book we did receive. Dr. Haymer also brought in a couple guest lecturers which was really interesting and informative!

I liked all the different diverse topics we managed to cover in this class. Most of the stuff like DNA profiling and GMO I knew very little about before.

He wrote his written materials that he covers in class which makes it easy to follow what he's talking about.

The ethical concerns raised during class time and possibilities with genetics such as testing for diseases, mutations, and potential uses in the future like cloning for humans.

The powerpoints and textbook handouts were very informative.

I like how Hayer gave homework that makes you put yourself in situations that we have learned about. This gave me a better understanding of the controversies, as well as letting me know that there is a lot of ethical dilemmas with the concepts that we have learned.

In general I liked that the course discussed and was related to current events.

The final paper instead of a final exam was excellent.

Overall a very interesting/relevent course.

Awesome course, I learned so much, yet it is a bit scary learning about genetics, I have to admit. Dr. Haymer's course is great and I would highly recomend to anyone- majors and nonmajors.
