13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
smart teacher that understood the corse inside and out, very funny and made class feel comfortable.
he knew the subject well and had great stories to tell.
He was a great lecturer and he provided personal stories as a way to back up the information he was presenting in class.
Very good teacher. I enjoyed his lectures, he made them very fun an interactive.
Not the greatest. He spent more time talking stories about irrelevant things.
Dr. Ogawa has a lot of knowledge on the course that he is teaching. I had a lot of American Studies classes but Dr. Ogawa had very interesting lectures that made me want to learn more about the Japanese American history.
Very fun to listen to
Professor Ogawa really knows how to make the materials easy to understand.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The stories and history.
i enjoyed the personal stories which made learning a lot more interesting. I also liked the review sessions and how the TA was really helpful.
I liked listening to the stories and lectures during the class. I also like the labs because it allowed me to get my questions answered and have a better understanding of the lectures.
The stories and lectures.
I liked the paper and discussions that were held in class. Professor Kitano was also a very good lecturer and I learned a lot about literature when she taught our class. Dr. Ogawa's lectures were also interesting to listen to and I really liked his "story-time" style of lecturing.
Dr. Ogawa's stories
I like how he incorporates life stories along with the lessons.

everything was crammed at the ending of the summer session. I wished students knew ahead of time about specific details dealing projects and papers. Groups should've formed at the beginning of the semester so we could have more time to meet up and work on the final presentation. It was hard completing all these assignments within the last few weeks especially if students have other classes to worry about.
The presentations were something I am not as comfortable with but the lab TA did her best to make us comfortable when we presented in front of the class.
The presentations were quite difficult since I'm not used to presenting in front of a class. But I understood that it was a requirement due to this class being an O-credit course. Overall, the presentation wasn't too bad, it was actually a good learning experience.

17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
fun and great to take.
This class was fun and i learned a lot about Japanese Americans. It made me appreciate all the Japanese who fought for America even though people were racist towards them.
that it was a great lecture/class and I learned alot.
A good subject, needs better structure
I really enjoyed this course. It was sort of hectic in the middle of the semester due to this course being a summer course (very condensed course) but our T.A. Kari Urada was very helpful, she was probably one of the most helpful T.A. I had at UH Manoa. Great class and wonderful professors/T.A. teaching this summer course.
The course was very interesting and it made me appreciate the Issei and Nisei more.
Excellent course

one suggestion is form groups earlier and layout the syllabus early with specific details about papers and projects. BUT GREAT CLASS!!!:)

11. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
he is a well informed teacher with first witness/personal situations which help explain the information given in the class
Awesome teacher! Very funny and easy to talk too. He knows his material very well and is very passionate about it.
a very good professor with many interesting stories that are related to the topics discussed in class.
One of the best professor i had here in uhm. Very funny and very modest and a well known reputation.
Dr. Ogawa is a great professor and he really makes class enjoyable. He knows a lot and teaches the material well. Highly recommended.
Great. He is a great professor and easy to learn from. He made the class enjoyable and pleasant.
He knows his history and has great stories
Great. I enjoyed his class and lectures.
very good. His lectures were so interesting because he always talked with his experiences. It made me familiar with understanding about American study.
Very funny, easy to talk to, always keeps students interested in lectures
listening to his lectures was very enjoyable and informative. his enthusiasm and knowledge were very encouraging
Dr. Ogawa is a very funny professor
an excellent professor and public speaker. very knowledgeable on the subject matter
He is a great professor who knows a great deal about the Japanese/Japanese-American culture. He is easy to listen- his lectures didn't feel like lectures, they often felt like he was telling a story. Very interesting!
He is a good lecturer. But a lot of times I wonder where he is getting his facts from. They don't seem true. With no textual evidence or support, it feels like he is just pulling them from thin air, especially when they don't concur with things I believe in. For example he said in one lecture that the most powerful man in the US is Senator Daniel Inouye. Ogawa claimed that he is even more powerful than the president. I don't doubt Senator Inouye is a very powerful man, but I don't see how he can be more powerful than the president. So because of statements like these, it made me question the validity of the other things he talked about. Was he stating facts or opinions? But overall, he is a very good and entertaining lecturer, his class entertained me for the full 50 min from beginning to end.
Dr. Ogawa is an amazing teacher. His enthusiasm teaching the material is what makes the class so interesting, and easy to learn. If all of my teachers were as enthusiastic as he, I would love going to every class every day.
very organized and prepared.
Knowledgable and genuine about the topic. Organized.
GOOD Professor
prof ogawa is truly passionate about his teaching and really tries to use his first hand experiences as a way of connecting the students with his concepts. he's very enthusiastic during lecture and always wants to be there. his stories and experiences really help the students to gain a better understanding of what actually happened to the Japanese in Hawaii during then olden days. his lectures are always interesting and his words of wisdom should be taken to heart. he really stresses the humanities section of his class and truly helped the students see his standpoints. :)
He is a great story teller because I was always engaged in his lectures. He has very strong opinions on certain things, but it shows that he is passionate about what he is teaching.
I think Dennis Ogawa is very funny. With his stories and experiences, it somehow supplements the material he is teaching. It is obvious that he knows a lot about the subject area which makes it easy to learn from him.(esp being the author of the textbooks required for this class)
Very personable and has an extensive knowledge of Japanese American history.
Interesting teacher.
He was a very good professor and a very good speaker. I like that he came to class everyday and had a story for us, even if it didn't pertain to the lesson. In the end, we always ended up getting to the subject at hand and I am constantly taking notes in that class because there is so much information packed in to one lecture.
Very knowledgeable of the course material and presented the lectures very interestingly. Knew how to transfer information through stories which made it very easy to learn. The best lecturer I have seen so far during my time at UH Manoa.
AWESOME!
funny teacher~
He is an excellent speaker. I feel like he has a lot of life experience and does well to share them with others. He made me excited to learn and come to lecture even though sometimes it wasn't always necessary.
is excellent, A status. He made class fun by telling true stories that he heard from people who experienced life in Hawaii in the past. He had very good knowledge of the subject and made me think about how the Japanese people suffered when they first came here and yet look where we are today. Some Japanese Americans are very successful.
excelelnt
makes the class interesting
very interesting and engaging instructor.
He is a very good lecturer. Compared to other classes, you don't fall asleep in his class because he talks about the points of the course in addition to other stories which tie into his lecturer

13. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
i am japanese so i could relate to a majority of the subject matter
Everything about the class was pretty good. I enjoyed watching the movies especially.
The videos.
I love the stories that Professor Ogawa shares with his lectures. Also i love the small lab group interactions.
I really like the fact that Dr. Ogawa is very animated in his lectures.
I liked the videos they were great to learn from and went along with the course.
The historical stories
I like the section on relationships that applied to current ones and the Glen Grant video was very entertaining.
I enjoyed his stories and his enthusiasm for the course
the lectures and videos
watching videos, visiting JCCH, and attending lecture class
like it all. lectures were informative, videos were informative and enjoyable as well.
One of my favorite lectures was the lecture about Characteristics of a Japanese-American Family. I just related to the content so much! At first, I didn't really want to go to the JCCH, but it turned out to be an enjoyable experience and I liked walking through the exhibit.
how the projects and work were directly related to the lectures and book.
Good videos to supplement. I like how the labs are designed to assist with lectures. Lectures were also interesting.
how he can relate his real-life experiences to topics that he is currently discussing in class. :)
Ogawa's lectures
I really liked the fact that we had lecture for two of the three days of class and on every Friday we had a lab day with a lab leader. It really helped with learning and understanding the information. I also really liked the film days. They were very appropriate and fun to watch. They weren't really boring and it was a nice change from lectures all day.
I liked hearing about Dr. Ogawa's experiences during his interviews with Japanese Americans as well as his traveling.
The stories the teacher told to put a concept or idea into perspective.
I like the fact that he is entertaining when he talks. There are some professors at Manoa that are really boring and make me want to go to sleep when they talk, but Professor Ogawa has a lot of information to share and is very enthusiastic about the subject. I also like the videos he shows in class; they are very interesting and provide a lot of information as well.
The stories he told.
Lectures
I cannot express how much I enjoyed his lecture. I have friends who have taken this course years ago and it has evolved greatly.
I liked the lectures when Dr. Ogawa told stories rather than just giving a regular lecture off a powerpoint or something. He told some interesting stories and tied it in with the lectures.
videos
i enjoyed how he was able to convey his lessons to us as if he were our friend. It made the lessons enjoyable while all the while making it easier for us to relate just because he was able to speak to us as is we were his equals.
His lectures were extremely helpful. Maybe the lab not so much because the TA was "interesting" for the lack of a better word. He helped reinforce what i had previously learned in ES 330 so that was good.
14. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
nothing
There wasn't really anything bad about the course. If anything the class was a bit full so sometimes, it was hard to find a decent seat since a lot of the chairs in the lecture room were cracked/broken.
N/A
There really wasn't anything to not like.
Professor Ogawa has an entire lecture dedicated to why Hawaii, in his own words, is "shit". In this lecture he describes how Hawaii's food is inferior, the education is sub par, the cost of living is too high and people living in Hawaii get paid too little. Ogawa goes on to talk about how our medical facilities, namely Queens Medical Center is terrible because the UH Manoa medical department is terrible, and patients are going to die without question. My father is hospitalized in Queens Medical Center's ICU fighting for his life at the moment. Thank you very much Professor Ogawa. Not only were Professor Ogawa's comments extremely callous and insensitive, it seemed to have no real connection to the material aside from blatant ego stroking of his own success and experiences that have allowed him to travel elsewhere in the country. Ogawa offered no clear alternatives to fix the "problems" he described aside from "don't live in Hawaii". As we all know, Hawaii is already facing a great exodus of educated young people leaving the islands for greener pastures on the mainland; Ogawa's comments just further compound the situation by discouraging students to remain in Hawaii. I also found it extremely puzzling and hypocritical, that if the education in Hawaii is so poor and lack-luster, and Ogawa is an educator in Hawaii, isn't he just as much a contributor to the problem? Perhaps the real "fix" here, is to send nay saying doom-and-gloom professors packing to the mainland that they profess to love so much. Now, this scathing review of Professor Ogawa may be dismissed as simply an emotional reaction by someone who has a father in the hospital and was told by a professor their father would die without question. Or it can be taken as insight into a professor who delights in poisoning the minds of his students by telling them: there is no hope, there is no future for you here. If I were athe administrator of an educational institution, I would be gravely concerned by a professor who turns people away by telling them their education (and by implication, the school that gave it to them) is worthless... but that might just be me.
Hmmm, not sure
NONE. Great course!
the JCCH writing assignment
N/A
nothing i didnt like
Honestly, some of the videos were a little boring but I did enjoy the one on Glenn Grant, Tokio Rose, and also a few about Pearl Harbor
i felt like the lectures were just story time.
Nothing much.
n/a
redundant videos
Sometimes I wasn't sure if I should believe some of the stories.
Too much videos.
Most of the videos
I did not care for the last project. I ended up getting a topic that I was not very interested in and I feel I could have been more successful if we were able to suggest topics we wanted to do.
no comments.
Again, the lab group in this one was kind of questionable. I believe that it was because of the TA and the fact that we had so many people who came from one particular high school. there were disruptive at times.
15. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Awesome course, great teacher, very helpful TA's. Good way to get your Oral focus and actually have fun obtaining it.
a great course especially for an O communication credit
I would recommend everyone to take it. Very good humanitarianism approach in the Japanese American culture.
Great course. You can learn a lot and fulfill an Oral Communication requirement. Really easy to pass as long as you put in some kind of effort. Highly recommended to anyone who needs an O or anyone who simply wants to learn about Japanese Americans.
an A
Great, fun and interesting class
very well. I could learn about the situations/ issues about Japanese-American through his lectures.
I think anyone that has any association with the Hawaiian Islands, people with Japanese heritage or simply anyone, should take this class. For me being mixed race with 50% Japanese, this class broadened my appreciation for being Japanese. Dr. Ogawa is an awesome professor, being that he is very knowledgeable from experience and study. He says and expresses thoughts that I could surely relate to.
I would take it again if I could.
this was a great course and really opened my eyes to the Japanese influence in Hawaiian culture
Great!
an excellent course, learned a lot from it. would recommend it to everyone.
Great class, I would definitely recommend to others
pretty good
Good class to take.
i would highly recommend this class to my friends or to anyone who needs an O focus credit.
I learned a lot from this course even though the work load was not as heavy. It is a great class to sit in to listen and take notes on for personal thoughts and exams.
it was a really good course to take. The O requirement scared me at first, but it was a good amount of talking in front of the rest of the class. I recommend everyone take this course if they need an O requirement.
Good course if wanting to learn about Japanese-Americans.
This was a very good course, and I would recommend this course for anyone. Even if you don't need to fulfill the oral credit, I would tell anyone who is interested in Japanese Americans to take this class. Good professor and very helpful TAs.
The only course that I can say I enjoyed the lectures more than the videos.
Good
This is a good course. Being of japanese ancestry made me more interested in my culture
I give the course an A because it was just very interesting. I like that I know the history of Hawaii and what my ancestry had gone through. If my great-grandparents hadn't gone to Kona, then I don't think I would be alive or living for that matter. I learned a lot through this course and realized that because of World War II, the lives of the Japanese Americans changed and shaped our lives today. I can't imagine how my grandparents survived in that time and seeing how successful my dad, the first born, had turned out, I can see he was disciplined by the old traditional Japanese way.
a lot of facts but still interesting
EXCELLENT!!!
This is a course definitely worth taking and keeping around. I feel it is much better than ES 330 by a long shot.

Group assignments, critical thinking and observation.
All the movies we saw.
we had lots of group projects. I liked it the best.
