13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She knew the subject well and was always helping students who needed extra help.
Laura is very approachable and makes you feel comfortable in a class where you might not have natural abilities. Not everyone can draw well, but she knew to grade to one's individual ability rather than against the top-of-the-class students. Her background in drawing, design, printmaking, etc. makes you feel like you're getting more than just an introduction to drawing. She also has a way of helping students engage with one another with the premise that we can also learn from one another to broaden our perspective.
She is very nice and enjoyable to be around. She knows so much about art, drawing, and methods!!!
She seems to know the subject pretty well
Laura's only strength was that she knew her subject well.
SHE KNOWS ART AND THE HISTORY BEHIND IT . SHE KNOWS THE MECHANICS OF ART AND DRAWING VERY ,VERY WELL.
She has strong passion to teach.
she cares about the students
Knowledge on the subject
she knew a lot about art and its differences in other cultures.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Have the course assignments listed and organized.
None.
At times it is not clear exactly what she wants...her directions aren't clear. Perhaps if she demonstrated more, or directed precicely what she means.
There would be a lot of changes. First is the rule where you get a grade deducted after three absences. I kept track of my absences but if you get three tardies you get an absence. I thought she knew her clock was fast and she so called claims she goes by her watch but i've never seen her use it once and now i just found out i have seven tardies which would bump my absences to five and i can only get a C as my highest grade, so i basically fail. There are around 13 that show up and i think because of this rule only four will pass. She is also the worst at explaining anything. She will tell you to do one thing and then it would be wrong and tell you to do another. We did have some handouts but we would never use them all. She had us print out 30 pages only to use around three to show us an example and never use them again. She should give hand outs on how to do anything for reference. She emails us her assignments but doesn't explain any of them. Like last week she tells us to do two abstract drawings and when we come in did have to do two but one is an abstract person and the other is a landscape. She needs to explain assignments more thoroughly, get rid of that strict absence rule and give better examples or at least give us hand outs that we actually need.
MAYBE TO EXPLAIN WHAT SHE WOULD LIKE OF THE STUDENT A LITTLE BETTER AND A LITTLE MORE CLEAR . BE MORE DIRECT WITH WHAT SHE IS EXPECTING THEM TO DO . OTHER THEN THAT SHE IS A EXCELLENT TEACHER .
Few times, I wasn't sure what should I do in class or for the assignments (technical thing). I think if she show some more examples, it would help students to get ideas clearly.
Theres one thing I like to suggest is when we have a new projects, I think if she could show some examples to her students what we need to do so that we could see what she wants us to do.
explain assignments and rules more clear
Give more explanations on assignments
no changes i really liked having you as a teacher
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She made time to talk with students and gave us extra help on things wedidnt understand.
Laura keep an open line of communication with students with after-class e-mail reminders. She was also very fair, allowing us to improve the grade of a project within a specified time period by making changes and re-submitting it.
She really didn't show concern for students, because if she did she would warn us of our absences and tardies. Now more than half the class is going to fail if she really keeps that rule.
SHE SHOWED ALLOT OF CONCERN FOR STUDENTS TO MAKE SURE THE GOT THERE WORK DONE AND ALWAYS E-MAILED US WITH THE PROJECTS THAT WE WHERE ON.
tries to encourage everyone to participate
Showed us our grade and how we could raise it
she would encourage us as a class to show are work and give opinions for other students.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes because she is good at the course subject and show concern for students.
I would recommend Laura to other students. She has a great attitude toward teaching.
Yes, she knows so much about the subject and has offered me great insite as to how I can improve all of my pieces.
No because she doesn't explain assignments very clear, she forgetful, and doesn't inform students about her comments she writes on assignments.
I would not recommend Laura because she is horrible at explaining anything which is basically teaching, and he absence rule is too strict.
YES . SHE IS A VERY GOOD INSTRUCTOR .SHE IS VERY GOOD AT TEACHING THE MECHANICS OF DRAWING AND HOW TO LOOK AT THINGS IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT .
Yes. She gave advices to each students in every class. It encouraged students a lot.
sure if you don't mind the work.
Yes she is fun and easy going teacher
Yes, if a students wants to learn a lot about art youll take her class. she was well inform, and she did her job very nicely.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Just needs to work on organized assignments.
Even though i'm most likely going to fail because of that dumb three absence rule, she is a nice person and has a lot of knowledge in her subject. Too bad she doesn't really know how to teach it.
SHE IS VERY KNOWLEDGAEBLE OF THE HISTORY OF ART AND HOW TO DRAW AND WORK WITH OTHER MEDIUMS .
very nice teacher.
18. Other comments:
Good teacher.
SHE KNOWS THE HISTORY OF ALLOT OF HONOLULU AND THE SMALLER TOWNSHIPS WHICH I FOUND TO BE VERY INTERESTING AND VERY HELPFUL FOR DOING BACKGROUND ON PROJECTS . OVERALL SHE IS A EXCELLENT TEACHER .
I like your class very much. I didn't have so much drawing experiences before I took this class though, now I really enjoy drawing even at home. I could learn many technics from your class. You gave a lot of opportunities to try something new that I've ever done.Thank you.
she will tell you to redo your drawings if she doesn't like it.

Woodworking
Working with the different mediums of sculpture and seeing all of the different kinds of work being produced today.
One on one time.
demos individual assessments
available class time and time to work after class was helpful.
Getting to work with different materials for different projects. For example the plaster, paper mache, and wood, and a little bit of aluminum sheets.
The slideshows of examples of art that we were going to be studying and making one of our own.
Learning of the building blocks in each art project was quite interesting. I also enjoyed getting to use the tools and learn their awesome capabilities.
I enjoyed being able to be creative.

13. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
I think that projects should not overlap or overlap as little as possible. I think there maybe too many projects to cover in the course of the semester that students may get overwhelmed.
Be more clear and have better communication with the students.
Having a class schedule (like the one that was passed out in October) attatched with the syllabus may make the students have better time management.
more explanations better time management-and grade percentage to time ratio
clear explanations, more dimenstrations of the steps of how to complete the project not just the end product.
Sometimes i felt as if the class was being rushed. I personally think she gave way too many "mini" projects. She squeezed in these mini projects within the main projects. Its hard to fully focus on one project when there are other mini ones that we have to worry about.
Needs to be a bit more organized.
I believe more freedom in a "liberal" art class would be nice. Her teaching style needs to be more relaxed.
More drawing

She provided and interesting take on 3D Composition and shed some light on this subject. I think that maybe students should be made aware of roughly how many hours that should be put into each project so that they can manage time accordingly.
Overall it was a pretty good class, I was certainly introduced to 3D composition and different materials ive never worked with before.
I enjoy taking this class.
it was fun making random trinkets. I got to make a birthday gift :)
Twas fun

Progress critiques with classmates were very valuable
The wood shop was neat to work in and taught me something I can use later in life if I want to work with wood.
Getting hands on in each project.
I enjoyed doing the chair assignment. Felt that using my hands and getting to do things myself made the accomplishment more the while. Also liked the setting of the classroom.
It was great learning to use different media in the class. The expectations in class were set to a good high level, and we learned that there's more than one way to being creative about something. It would be nice if the class was more than twice a week just because in-class time to work on projects is very valuable.
The interaction between the students ideas.
The critiques were helpful.

20. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Much more clear explanations of expectations of the projects.
I would do more projects that are meaningful like the wooden seating!
I think that sharing comments and giving critiques of each students pieces were helpful, but I think that it shouldnt take up most of the class time because we end up not having enough time to work on our projects. Especially when we had to share the campus artwork project and the downtown art project. It really took a lot of time and left us with little time to complete our seating project.
Wish that we could have an opportunity to walk around our classmates and look at each other art pieces without feeling noisy or pertruding into their work. Hope to have spent a little less money on the material, but didn't find buying the material too overwehlming.
I don't really have any suggestions except that the instructor's style and methods to teaching are fine. The instructor is prepared for class and gives us enough time to work on things. She also lets us work on improving finished works to get a better grade.
Stimulate the critical thinking in terms of design and composition.
It would have been helpful to have a demonstration for each type of material we worked with.
The instructor takes longer than needed to explain things a lot of times. She can try to be more concise with the way she speaks.
