I appreciated the professor taking into consideration his student's other senior ACM courses, and film projects, by having in-class writing assignments to help fill the WI.
I honestly learned so much in this class more than I expected. I believe my views on ethical will never be biased as it has in the past. I now have to view things in all aspects.
I found this course very interesting. I enjoyed the lectures because Professor Brislin made it easy to understand. I also liked watching the movies in class because it was movies that I never saw before. The only thing that I would change is the papers that we had to write. I thought the idea behind it was good but the length of the paper played a big part of the downfall. I felt that because we knew we had to write so many pages, we ended up writing just to write instead of sticking with the main idea of the paper.
This course is probably one of my favorite courses that I've had during my entire University career. this course not only gives you tools to create a good, thought-provoking film but also gives you tools to evaluate and explain your decision/actions and the decisions/actions of others in your everyday life. I highly recommend this course to every college student. Professor Brislin may seem intimidating at first but he's a very smart and funny instructor. He makes sure class is never dull and often relates personal stories with the material that we're learning.
replace Smoke Signals with another indigenous film
I really liked the class but I felt that the grading was pretty unfair on the writing assignments. I worked so hard in this class and felt like I did an exceptional job and I did not get the grade that I deserved. The movies were really interesting and related well to the subjects we were covering. The method of taking attendance needs to be changed as well; passing around a sheet is not an accurate way of attendance and I know many people that had a lower grade because the attendance sheet did not get passed to them. I think that is really unfair, especially in an ethics class. Just do a roll call on the list where you say their name and people say "here". Its much easier and effective for everyone.

Professor Brislin has a wide knowledge in Media Ethics. He helped the students learn and understand the subject. I really enjoyed his emails recapping what we learned/went over that week. Over all, he's an excellent instructor who knows how to teach students properly.
While I feel Prof. Brislin was quite generous in preparing us for our regular testing, the tests themselves had many questions that were ambiguous and I feel could have been debated. In fact, barring re-writing some of the questions for added clarity, having a formal dispute system on questions that the student feels could have gone multiple ways should be built into the course.

Ok course
The class discussions about ethical issues.
The awesome instructor. Also the discussions that challenged our perspectives and made the class reevaluate their positions on certain topics - the course encouraged a lot of emotional and intellectual growth. This has been one of the top courses that I've take at UH. It offers an education that is unattainable in other courses and (I'd imagine) most other colleges. Fantastic.
The ethical dilemmas we were presented with, and how to approach these problems.
The films we screened and how our discussions of ethical/philosophical behavior will be applied to personal projects.
Talking about the ethical issues brought up in film genres.
the ethical triumvirate and the tests of reversibility, universality, and publicity.
the unique teaching style that works wonderful.
all the ethical terms that I have learned and using words such as taxonomy to make myself sound more smarter. I'll also remember this course by the ethics we have covered in class and stories such as the blacksmith and the baker which was an excellent way of learning different ethical values and principles we have.

Maybe start working on/talking about and securing ideas on second (6pg) commentary earlier so we have a better feel for the paper. Make in class projects for fleshing out the paper or ideas.
This has been one of the top courses that I've take at UH. It offers an education that is unattainable in other courses and (I'd imagine) most other colleges. An in depth, unbiased exploration of ethics. Fantastic class. Tom Brislin is wonderful - he doesn't impress his own opinions and values onto the class but instead asks open ended questions that motivate the class into thinking deeper about topics and grow a greater understanding of ethics and morals. I would absolutely recommend this course to all students, no matter their major.
Fantastic. Entertaining and fair, thought provoking discussions promote learning and class bonding.
This was a very interesting course that taught me new ways of evaluating situations and making decisions.
Best teacher I've had at UH.
It was an excellent class from multiple group sessions to the jokes and magic tricks that the instructor shared, the class was well put together, challenging, and it was mind opening experience. One of the best classes to take right before you graduate!
:)
Love the group activities and group work; it is a very positive learning environment!

?
The great indigenous films that I watched that I would have otherwise looked over. I definately learned from all of the films. I've also become inspired to make films similar to the ones we watched in class.
The films that I was exposed to.
The movies we watched. This class really broadened my film type interests. Some of the films, short or long, became some of my favorites =)
The course that spurred me to write more stories of Hawaii. I've always had the goal of trying to make it big and to get somewhere, but now I realized my responsibility to tell Hawaiian stories as well.
The many indigenous films we watched as well as a bonus guest lecture by Irene Bedard.
The movies.
The impact a film can have on a person, even if it is labeled as Indigenous.
The deepness of some of the films.
Prof Brislin's hard nosed grading system being balanced out by his obvious love of cinema.
the films we watched. They opened my eyes to other parts of the world, different cultures, and events in history that i was oblivious to. I have a much deeper appreciation for indigenous films and i really enjoy watching them.
The amazing films that do not get as much exposure as Hollywood films
The discussions that were had, and the way my classmates reacted to some of the films presented. It was very eye-opening to say the least.

Overall a great class. I think it's a very important class that everyone in the ACM program should take, especially because it directly ties into our society here in Hawaii.
Great instructor that knows his content.
I wish there were more examples of what gets an "A" grade on a film commentary. Sometimes I felt like I wrote a really good one, but then it came back to me with a mediocre score. Maybe some past students commentaries with names removed, so we can see what has achieved top marks in previous semesters.
A little more lenient regarding absence. I try to come when I can, but still.
None
Grading system was highly subjective and often cryptic. Will reserve final judgment until final grade is made available as I honestly have no clue what I am getting despite having fully completed 100% of the assignments.
I really enjoyed this class. I learned a lot about indigenous cultures, their struggle with colonization and their assimilation or lack thereof into their surrounding environment.
The class has been a very great experience. It promotes me to create indigenous films of Hawaii. Lastly, the class motivates me to appreciate indigeonous films due to the lack of support they receive within America.

18. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
any ethical dilemma's I'll come across.
The energy and insight Prof Brislin brought to the class.
The examples used to teach these ethics, and the fun and friendly atmosphere he has provided.
I'll remember this course because it was one of the best classes I've taken. Also, Professor Brislin was one of the best professors I've had. I was intimidated by this class because it was a 400-level course, but Professor Brislin made this course very fun and entertaining, but also very educational and interactive. The class discussions we always have are very helpful in opening our eyes to different ethical theories. I did not know what to expect from this class, but it far exceeded my expectations and I would highly recommend this class and this Professor to other students.
Using the ethical tests in every day situations.
The most challenging textbook to read with incredibly small text, few pictures, and long length but still managing to somehow ace all the quizzes.
The people I worked with and Dr. Brislins knowledge and understanding of subject.
The various ethical views we learned.
I will remember this course for Brislin. He is quite a guy,
Although I may not remember the class I will have an awareness for ethics and ethical theories when interacting with people and situations in the professional world.

One of my more favorite and more eager to learn classes this semester.
Dr. B is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He makes the subject interesting with his witty sense of humor and enthusiasm. He is also very attentive to his students and communicates efficiently when students are in need of help. A+++!
Learned some but not as much as others because have already studied ethics at another school when I was a philosophy major
I enjoyed this course. However I did not learn or develop new viewpoints because these are the kinds of things that I would read and ponder on my own, and my parents brought me out to meet new people and see alternate viewpoints. A lot of this class for me was putting a label to ideas or theories I had already thought about. But that's just me, I thought this class was enjoyable
The group discussions were very useful and the incentives to get other students to read the emails helped force students to be informed when it came to have discussion in class.
Very fun and informative class. I enjoyed this course.

19. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I enjoyed the movies
Learning the different ethical approaches. It was neat to see things through these perspectives.
The most valuable aspects came when we watched a film and discussed the ethically or moral issues pertaining to it.
applying theories written in the text to real life situations especially those related to our field of interest.
The repetition and reinforcement of key concepts rather than requiring sheer memorization of vast amount of pieces of information. Quiz structure - not intimidating, but was a good way of keeping me on my toes and on top of my readings. The class size - small enough for comfortable sharing.
Ethical tests: Test of transparency, reversibility, and universality. Veil of ignorance.
The instructor was highly organized, and handed out all needed materials in order to complete assignments on the first day of class, along with supplemental material distributed in class as well as online on the course website. Completing a mini biography of myself was very interesting, and assisted me during the course in relation to thinking about ethics and how life had shaped a lot of my thoughts and personal code. The assignments were challenging in a great way and made me dig and think. I used to think a lot of ethics came purely from the Bible, but this course opened my eyes to a lot of philosophical origins and principles. For a filmmaker, novelist, musician, or even in business, I can see how this course is extremely important and can now recognize how the story line and narrative can be shaped using ethical concepts. The many examples used in class were very valuable and assisted me in understanding. The instructor was extremely fair, and took time to thoroughly explain the material. I wished there was and media ethics part 2, where I could learn even more about applying ethical principles in story telling. I can see just from this course that this is going to be extremely key. The instructor was awesome as well as the course. It changed my life for the better and I will not only use these concepts in my future research and profession but in raising my children. Mahalo nui loa for your kokua!

Lectures
Ethics are not rules or laws. They are merely a way to evaluate certain situations.
Professor Brislin used real world examples and group discussions/role-playing that made learning a lot more interesting, fun, and engaging. His explanations of the material were very clear and he made it easier to learn, so I could apply and understand the things that I had read from the textbook. He was also available to meet with students whenever needed, and always got back to us through email right away. He is an awesome Professor!
He put everyday situations with the things he teach. Helps us understand the material.
videos and weekly emails really helped to prepare for classes. activites were helpfula s well
The instructor was very knowledgeable of the history of media ethics. The most valuable aspect I learned in this class was to apply the concepts to real life situations that we run into. Doing the greater good to make everyone in the society happy is not always the right answer. Sometimes we need to put that veil of ignorance on so that we are not egotistic when making decisions.
viewing the different perspectives of ethical theories from different philosophers, etc.

I valued all aspects. The writing assignments were a little intense but it played apart of applying the concepts to the problem/situation.
I don't know. Everything seemed to be valuable.
Please change the explanation for the second commentary. The second commentary killed everybody's grade because we didn't know the format to write the paper. In the syllabus, the explanation for the process was mistaken to be taken literally as a scavenger hunt ... when in actuality, all we really needed to do was a more in depth analysis paper, sort of like the first commentary paper. The syllabus made the second commentary sound so restrictive, please just give us ideas on where to look for information, and tell us to analyze the certain issues.....please don't tell us how to do it (find the problems, then list the problems, then come up with your own solutions........NO! just make it an analysis paper, because that's really want you wanted, it's there's more quality in the work, compared to if you called it a "reflection piece" where the paper will be much more informal).

Professor Brislin made sure to make all aspects of this course interesting for his students. He was always prepared with tons of resources (activities, videos, etc.) during each class, and he really opened up discussion for students instead of just lecturing at us for the class. He was always very available to consult if necessary and he gave us challenging yet interesting assignments with ample time to complete them. I very much enjoyed this professor and this class.
the interesting stories and movie clips. and the different philosophies on the subject. all the in class activities!
Engaging classes, constant teacher student feedback.
All aspects. The class was very insightfull.
All the different ethical issues faced by those in the media industry and the various ways in which they can be addressed
Besides readings from the textbook, I found that in class discussions and lectures by Professor Brislin were very helpful. When applying ethical examples to reality, his sense of humor and personality kept me well interested in the coursework.
I learned many ethical guidelines and how to apply them to real world situations.
the class lectures and the videos
Having weekly quizzes helped in learning the more important and basic information that we needed to know, I also enjoyed some of the visual pictures and video clips to help illustrate the information.
The interaction with the professor, discussions of text book content/ application of material.
