10. Other comments:
THe lectures in this course did not relate at all to what students were tested on. Teacher Assistant made the exams, which were very difficult and the time limit was too short. I believe teacher relied on T.A. too much and T.A. was unable to answer many questions.
Tests were hard to complete with the time limit given.
The professor had interesting and relevant stories to share. a lot of knowledge, and his opinions convinced me on a couple of ideas or points that he made.
Wood is very passionate about this topic and knowledgable.
I feel that I have learned a lot of information in this course. Thank you very much.
All he talked about was his personal experiences with medical sociology, and he never clearly followed the book. He and his teaching assistant were never on the same page when it cam to our assignments or tests. He gave us one mid term with only 40 min to take the test, when our class is 1 hour and 15 min. I would never take a class from him again.
Very much liked Dr. Wood's lectures. They were informative while being entertaining. Mostly, he provided a perspective which challenged the existing frameworks and institutions and challenged us to do the same. The text was also very good for the course. I enjoyed reading it as well as the supplemental readings. I very much disliked the group project. Even though most instructors assign group projects, I don't think it should be structured as one grade for all members at the undergraduate level. I think there's simply too much of a variance between levels of internal motivation, conscientiousness, responsibility, capabilities, and aptitude. For some students, a "B" is not considered a good grade, while for others anything passing is fine. Also, most students work and coordinating schedules poses a problem to group cohesion. At minimum, perhaps smaller groups of 3-4 people is more easily managed and more classroom time could be allotted toward the group project. My experience working with my group so bad that in retrospect, had I known the study ethics of some of the students, I would have actually preferred to write the entire paper and do the presentation myself. I had to make numerous requests for individuals to complete the same tasks, make corrections, etc. Some individuals simply did not do it, even knowing it would affect the grade of the entire group. Even with the work that I put in, I feel the overall quality was poor because of the quality of work of the other group members. Revising work takes more time than creating the work properly in the first place.
Really cool teacher and I had a blast in his class. Very entertaining and he likes to make jokes which is always a good thing.
Although I could see that he is very knowledgeable about this field, I think that there are several things that can be improved. First, he did not really explain assignments clearly. For example, he announced extra credit assignments just very briefly when students were leaving at the end of the class. Even though I was always trying to pay attention to what he says, I missed some information. He should have emphasized and explained them in more detail. Regarding the final papers and group presentation, he did not give us detailed criteria, such as how long each presentation should be, or whether the grade for group work would be given individually or as a group. I got the impression in this class that there are many unclear things.
This class really opened my eyes to global health problems.
Great Professor - Tests Are SOOO Hard, But Besides That I Enjoyed His Class!
I loved Dr. Wood's lectures because they got us to think about real-life current issues that we can clearly see in our everyday lives/current newspapers, rather than just cover the text.
Laulima tests are super hard and counter intuitive. If students cannot type fast they are disadvantaged. If they have a slow computer they are disadvantaged, if they take tests well on paper because of the option to mark things up and see other questions all at once, they are again disadvantaged. Computer tests are hard.
Dr. Wood is a great professor who makes enjoyable and clear lectures. Thank you so much!
Dr. Wood was a great professor. Each class was very interesting, kept me sitting at the edge of my seat. Knows his stuff, has A LOT of field experience! Amazing professor!

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The most valuable part of this course was definitely Professor Wood's character and demeanor. This course would not have been the same taught by someone else. I enjoy Professor Wood's teaching style. His lectures were captivating and thought-provoking.
learning about the different health care
I thought that the subject matter was very interesting and extremely relevant to what is going on in our country at the moment. I appreciated the class discussions and sharing with each other our stories and opinions about certain topics.
Most of the course material was valuable. In particular: the sociological definition and perspective of illness; epidemiology; health problems in developing countries; and health care systems in other countries.
Talking about how medicine in general and being sick has so many social aspects involved with it. There were so many interesting lectures he gave that really made you think about the medical field and our roles in it also.
how much information the teacher knew
all very valueable
Applying info to current events
Learning about the health system and how socioeconomic status effects soemones place in that system
It was valuable learning about the behind the scenes of the medical field.
I enjoyed when Prof. Wood would relate such topics back to his students.
His lectures
all of the information shared by the professor seemed genuine
The evaluation of health care systems in various countries.
Individuals responsibility to their health care.
The pros and cons of the health industry
I thought the whole course was interesting because we covered things such as health care that has a major impact on us.
I didn't find many aspects valuable.
I liked the group works. It forced us to meet other people and see what they are thinking.
Professor Wood made me look at healthcare in a whole new aspect.
Just learning about health within the society and how it affects the country as a whole.
learning about various cultures and how they view health and healthcare
11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I can't think of anything. I enjoyed everything about the course.
everything i learned was valuable
I was very thrown off at the beginning of the semester when we were given so many articles to read on Laulima. I was glad that we weren't going to be tested on those. It was just too much for us to handle, I think. I think the lecture style of the class was all right for certain topics, but wasn't as stimulating as it could have been if there were some visual aids once in a while. I would have appreciated something different every so often.
Medical ethics were not covered in very much depth, so although the subject itself is valuable, the way it was covered in class wasn't. The overview of health care professionals also seemed a little unnecessary, what we already know.
This was a great class
lessening to the teacher talk all class
The online readings were not the greatest.
Some lectures didn't deal with the topic.

27. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Much of the course content was new to me and so I enjoyed being exposed to new things.
scavenger hunt
The textbook was easy to read and very interesting, and Prof. Wood is very interesting too. His attitudes on healthcare, healthcare professionals, and the healthcare system itself are interesting to hear about. He also shared many of his stories with the class and you could tell that he was very experienced and knowledgeable. I liked the extra credit assignments, like taking pictures and going on scavenger hunts. I also like that we have a lot of freedom as far as what we can choose to write about for our papers. The exams were reasonable - not too difficult, not too easy.

what i learned
extra credit
The class periods were usually very interesting.
The exam.
As previously mentioned, the real world scenarios.
The topics discussed
I liked how Prof. Wood gave the class numerous opportunities for extra credit and was very fair in grading.
The group projects, extra credit assignments, and active participation
Different aspects of the health industry
I like how Mr. Wood brought up very critical issues that we are facing today like health care in America and other countries.
Learning about problems that we deal with every day such as health care and other problems in the medical field.
I liked the extra credits and the projects..
Just the basic information about health care systems.
different diseases and how they are spread throughtout the world
28. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I can't think of anything. I enjoyed this course.
Like mentioned above, I didn't really like the lecture style of the class because I like to have visual aids to follow along with a lecture. I also think we could have participated in more activities, projects, or discussions that would have deepened our understanding of medical sociology. Also, the group project/paper was not very enjoyable because a couple of people in my group didn't pull their own weight. I think group assessments of each individual should be included with every group project that is assigned so that everyone can be graded fairly.
The term paper seems too long for an undergrad class - if it was double-spaced, it would be 20-30 pages long. Maybe 15-20 double-spaced, or 8-10 single-spaced.
the final paper was too long its not a writing intensive class
the long papers
I feel that a 10-15 page, single spaced paper is entirely too much for a non writing intensive class.
The long papers.
I don't know.

There was a lot of writing and it wasnt a writing intensive.
I actually liked it all.
The part where Dr. Wood just stands in the front of the class and lectures. He needs to be more modern. Use powerpoint to explain the important topics about the course. Use visuals, technology, and other ways to address different types of learning.
repetatively talking about the same thigns
29. My overall evaluation of this course is...
This course has changed the way I see the world. I believe everyone would benefit from learning the material taught in this course. I highly recommend this course and Professor Wood.
i really learned about our health care as well as other countries health care
I would highly recommend this course and its instructor to my friends interested in medical sociology.
Great course. Very valuable material, and very interesting. Doesn't skim over the ugly truths. Everyone entering the health care field should be required to take this course first.
This class was really great and I learned alot from it. I would recommend this class to anyone because it really makes you think about how you fit into the medical world. You have a part to play in it everytime you are sick or even healthy. This class was interesting and Professor Wood made it great because he has extensive and interesting knowledge about what he is teaching!
well
it should be a writing intensive class
It is a good course with valuable information and a great professor.
Great!
I would really recommend this class to anyone. It really gives you an insight of the world around us. Especially our health.
TGHe course was great and I got a lot out of it.
This was a wonderful course for anyone who would like to learn about health care systems and its affect on society.
very informative, with a well rounded perspective to the realities of what is occuring in the medical field.
Excellent and valuable in my future in the health industry
I really enjoyed this course. I have learned so much and have become very aware of many issues in health. I have learned how to look at social factors when understanding health and health issues.
Good. I didnt know what to expect coming in but it was interesting
LOVE IT. I would definitely recommend the course to other students.
C-
good class
30. Other comments:
Thank you for teaching.
I have a lot of respect for this professor. However, it would be helpful if lectures were more organized, as they would be easier to follow. The lectures were sometimes meandering and/or repetitive. Also, visuals would make classes more lively.
Prof Wood is a phenominal teacher. :)
I would have loved to see some inclusion of Native Hawaiian healing in this course and also some alternative medicine discussions.
Mr. Wood is a great teacher and great accaedemic mentor. He has alot of experience and alot of insight in health issues. He is passionate about the material he teaches and really cares about his students success.
Dr. Wood is very wise and knowledgeable about this field. He is very realistic in a sense that he doesn't sugarcoat the problems that are present in society and I like that. I also like that fact that we look at other cultures rather than just focusing on ours. It was through this that I saw that Americans should follow other diets of people around the world.
Needs to be addressed in a more modern way. Some students just don't learn by lecturing.
