13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He could make students be interested in botany through this class and by reflecting other areas, for example sustainability. Also, he made the opportunities for students to take review both in and out of class time.
- Energetic and enthusiastic -- good at making the material engaging
He gets the students engaged, hammer information in. He's very passionate about what he teaches!
Professor Ross was able to keep up with the schedule which made class flow through smoothly and transition from on content to the other in an effective way. He was very knowledgable not only in Botany but in the aspect of science. He didn't only talk about planting plants.
He knows about this class and he has a lot of passion for teaching. I am impressed with it.
Professor Ross is very passionate about the subject. From sustainability, conservation, biological science, and much more, he proves to know a lot about the subjects. He also is very keen on hands on learning experiences. His ability to offer service learning and other extra credit opportunities makes him a good teacher.
He speaks clearly and loud during his lecture which was very helpful for me understand the complicated words and sentences.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
It was too cold in the classroom... We knew he felt hot as teaching in the class. However, it was too cold to take a class. Please consider about it.
Just wondering -- have you ever tried just calling on random students to get them to participate? Maybe you have and it's not your style, but it could help bring students into the conversation who are less inclined to participate due to insecurity about English language skills or differences within their home education system. (Might backfire -- could make them more embarrassed/shy... but just a thought.)
None, Mr.Ross was the best teach I've ever had, he's a total badass!
Even though the summer class is fast paced, don't go slow in the beginning of the lesson and then rush it at the end to finish off the lesson.
I wasn't sure what you wanted from the writing assignments. I was very, very lost towards the end of the class. The material was probably the hardest and went by the fastest. Because Professor Ross is so passionate about what he believes in, he often times forces one idea onto the students. While I agree with most of his concerns, he's sometimes a little biased towards his thoughts. However, this is what also makes him a great teacher.
His schedule for the course was little hard. I guess it was a summer course. He was actually saying that at the class too.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
- Made an effort to encourage students to meet with him
He made every effort to get everyone on track
He always reminded us after lecture that if we have any questions that he will be in his office or we can meet up with him after class to talk about our study habits and if we need help to study.
He always ask us, if you have any concern please come and see me. Even summer session is very short but Mr. Ross always encouraged us.
He constantly would try and encourage us to see him for any problems concerning the class. He always wanted us to do well.
He shows his concern the whole time. He cares about everything in many directions.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I will recommend because he is the best teacher in Hawaii I took. But, summer semester was hard course... :(
Yes. His teaching style and class structure is very straight-forward and easy to follow.
Hell yes I'd recommend him, his passion for his field shows in his teaching. I'd recommend any botanist, or student in general to take his class
I would highly recommend Professor Ross to other students.
Yes. He has a lots of passion for teaching botany. If they learn they will learn, not only about botany.
Yes!
I would recommend to my friends to take his class because he is a really good teacher.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Thanks Mr. Ross for the education and for keeping us engaged in our studies.
The class was very enjoyable and it felt like an actual college course because he made us think for ourselves and not treated us like high schoolers.
I had a great time. Sometimes I was disappointed of myself but I was really enjoyable time in the botany class. If I have chance, I would like to take another his course.
He is very active and supportive.
18. Other comments:
Thank you for teaching us introduction of botany. And, I have to be sorry to fall in asleep a lot of times during your class. But, to be honest, I had good time to take botany class.
Keep on being a badass Mr.R dog.
Very good class, I learnt a lot from Botany 101.
I wish there were less quizzes.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Knows this subject very well and very passionate about it
Great enthusiasm for the field he teaches.
His believes in what he is teaching.
extremely knowledgeable about the subject
He knows what he's talking about and knows how to catch the students' attentions during his lectures. He's really passionate about what he teaches and it shows greatly in his lectures.
Very knowledgable and passionate about his subject
I've never had a teacher so passionate about what they taught, it makes learning A LOT easier and enjoyable when your teacher has a true love for their subject. He also made lectures very interesting, I actually wanted to come to class everyday...that doesn't normally happen.
knows his stuff!
Explains lectures very well and always seems to make lectures interesting
He is passionate about what he teaches
That he isn't there because it's his job, it's his passion. He enjoys teaching students about the importance botany has in our life, especially living here in Hawaii
Botany
Mr Ross is an excellent educator who brings inspiration to his students
Mr. Ross is extremely passionate about his area of study. He is an exciting instructor who knows how to motivate his class. I personally wish that I would have taken a Hawaiian language class before taking this course because I feel I would have better understood some of the terminologies. I am eager to take another Botany course.
best teacher I've ever had, hands down. im taking him again fersure. I learned so much about plants and sustainability. He really tries to make people excited to help in the community and excites your need for learning. great guy as well and has more knowledge regarding Botany you wouldnt believe. This guy also helps so much outside of school doing projects, its crazy.. every time we had an assignment or test it would be graded and available for us to see that same day.. He is also one of the most passionate teachers regarding what he teaches and helping students, not just students but the human race. thankyou, that is all
Professor Ross is an extremely well rounded teacher. Everything he teaches is VERY clear, he makes the lectures exciting yet still academic and factual and engages all the students in the class. This is my second semester with him and I don't regret taking another class of his at all.
He was really passionate and knowledgeable on the subjecy
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
To much to learn in a short amount of time. Felt like an accelerated learning class. An overwhelming amount of information given for one to grasp unto as passionately as him.
Keep on doing what he is doing
none
I have no changes.
Absolutely nothing.
none!
Not to let the lecture drag on and to make it more fun to learn
Yes
Nothing keep doing what your doing
just keep doing you
Honestly my only "suggestion" is to really push for more botany classes. If that means someone else takes over Botany 101 so he can focus on a higher level botany class than I think it's worth it! He's a very valuable teacher.
The whole service learning process was really inconvenient and unorganized. Some changes could be made to make the process more efficient.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
by getting students more evolved in service learning or extra credit activities
By implementing how important it is to get involved.
Was always available during office hours, and open to discuss problems your having with the material
found ways to keep students on time and awake in class
He always would remind us about due dates and when a certain activity is held for MINA.
He truly wants everyone to succeed and participate in class, and he makes sure of it. He makes himself available outside of class for any questions or concerns you might have and is pretty fair with grading and making things up. He also provides extra credit opportunities which gives you no reason to not pass the class.
Makes sure we're keeping up on hour service learning hours
He didnt
By always reminding us of his office hours, and always repeated important announcements
Clearly
He helped people one on one
Always making himself available for further discussion about course information.
By encouraging participation in class and helping anyone before or after class regarding any type of work.
Professor Ross showed concern by encouraging students to be on time and stressing that they participate during lectures.
He wanted students to come to class on time and focused.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
focus on one subject at a time, than so many subjects racing at a click to get a whole chapter in one sitting. Give a student a chance to fully understand and develop a deeper passion for it consider the ethnic international differences in learning. He may be passionate and wants the students to be passionate to but it feels like a bunch of information gets lost. To fast, to much,to little time rushed rushed rushed. Great subject and learned a lot but feel like the transition of information given loses its meaning and value. So in essence the student loses its grip on the subject and falls asleep.
yes
Yes, a very informative class with a creative way of presenting
yes, you will show up on time and stay awake in class
Yes, definitely. Mr. Ross is an amazing teacher. He shows a tremendous amount of passion in what he's teaching and knows how to make his lectures fun.
Yes I would . He is a good teacher. Has lots of energy.
Definitely, I think that everyone should take one of Mr. Ross' classes. Not only is he an outstanding teacher and makes learning enjoyable, but you gain much more than what you'd expect from a normal botany class.
yes because it is the best class you will ever take
Yes. Best teacher I've ever had
No because the lectures drag on and you can fall asleep
Yes! He is a very relatable teacher, whose easy to understand, and open to anyone who doesn't/
Yes because this class was so nice to learn
yeah he was a great teacher
Yes, I would recommend Mr. Ross to other students.
absolutely, best teacher ever. You wont go wrong with this class, and he'll help you go in the right direction.
ABSOLUTELY. Professor Ross has made two of my good friends change their majors to botany and ethnobotany. I am considering it as well but am just a little uncertain in my skills. It is definitely the most exciting area I've experienced thus far!
Yea it was a fun class and I learned a lot he's a good teacher.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Determine to get the information out there and get more people involved. Felt like a revolution.
Malama I Na Ahupua'a
In all honesty, I haven't had an interest in anything related to botany/ethnobotany. However after taking his class this semester, it totally changed my mind. Like I previously said, he finds ways to make your learning experience exciting, with his in class workshops and awesome opportunities to get involved in our community.
He is fair.
Thank you for doing what you do. Because of your class I've gained a whole new perspective on not just how plants impact us as beings, but the changes I can make in my own community.
he's awesome
that there should be more teachers like him
He is so helpful to students
N/A
keep it up dude!
I really appreciate that professor Ross took a chance on me when I came to him with some grave concerns regarding personal issues that had gotten in the way of my participation this semester. He urged me to do my best to come to class and do my best. I would not have been able to do so without his faith in me.
Keep being awesome
18. Other comments:
Made be respect our planet and all life on it. How important ethnobotony is to our society, to our native indigenous people and to the whole planets means to survival
Awesome professor, will take again in the future. :)
He is very passionate about class material. Some times he gets really excited and may slap on the desk to emphasize while he is talking. Sometimes I don't think he realizes he is doing that . I think it's kinda funny. However , try not to be startled it's just his way. He is a cool dude! Good class and very interesting . I would recommend him.
...
this dude needs a raise and more power. im sure it would benefit the school profoundly.
Other than service learning I had no problems with this course. Mr. Ross had no direct impact on my dissatisfaction with service learning.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Encourages participations
His clear strength in teaching was the clear and informative teaching style via powerpoints or visuals. But also how he uses the slides as a visual but expands on it so students are not just reading off the slides to get information necessary for upcoming exams or questions. Professor Ross is very big on student participation and made it very clear from the first day of class. It makes for a very interactive class and exercises the studentsâ?? ability to recall and demonstrate that they learned/absorbed the material from previous classes.
Michael Ross is a great teacher because he is passionate about the material being presented.
He is so passionate and knowledgeable in the subject of Botany.
Extremely knowledgeable and a lot of information to offer students.
He knows the subject very well and he consistently answers questions that we may have about the course topic. He is very precise which makes things easier for us to understand especially for the exams.
Mr. Ross is very passionate in his work which makes the class that much more interesting. It is very effective the way he shares his information that it is what he believes in and preaches. He brought his personality and concern into lectures which kept lectures interesting and the students on their toes. Information processed and shared in the class will be long cherished and gave spark to other things.
He knows the subject well
He is very knowledgeable about his field so it meant that he is very passionate about what he teaches. That kept me interested throughout the course.
He spoke clearly and use his time well. He always made time for questions!
Passionate, and great overall teacher, he really helps his students learn the material.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
One change I would recommend is taking the class outside if there are real-world examples within the campus or possibly bring in samples into the classroom. Having a real-life sample than a 2D image shown does enhance the learning experience and it would benefit students who are not taking the lab at that time.
None.
There was too much information that was presented in the first section of his class. I think that a lot of the information from the first section could be cut out. I also think that he shouldnʻt make his exams cumulative because he has so much information to share. By the time the last exam is taken I will probably forget everything that was thought in the first and second section. Being that this course is a 100 level course the information that was presented I think belongs in a 200 or 300 level course.
More class activities would be nice. Maybe even an activity about GMO's since that was such a heated topic. Maybe a debate on GMO's. Pro GMO vs. Anti GMO.
Don't worry and put too much energy into the students who don't take interest for the matter, instead focus on those who do take interest because they stick around.
none the class was great
Nothing I can think of.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He remembers everyone's name in the class.
Throughout the course of the semester, Professor Ross have demonstrated that he is concern for his students. He listens when one projects an issue and quickly resolves and adjusts to their comment if one is needed. He wants his students to learn and absorb the material he teaches and to become involved because the information presented is very valuable especially when many of the lectures and lessons are occurring at real time in the outside world. Professor Ross is very open to students to come to see him if they are troubled or struggling in the class and the pre-class talks to students about things in or out of class was also really nice.
Michael Ross provided opportunities for extra credit for any students that needed it. He also employs students to participate in Service Learning to better understand the material from the class
Michael Ross from my point of view didnʻt show enough concern for students. It is understood that if we donʻt show up for class we will be behind in the lecture and that after two absents we will lose a letter grade and that is understandable but, to make it a requirement that we complete service learning I feel is brutal because for some students they are single parents or some are parents of multiple children and it makes really hard to do. I think that he should come up with some kind of alternative for service learning for the students that are unable to complete service learning with a legitimate reason.
Made sure we we on track with reminders about deadlines and reviews for exams. Took steps to assist with student success.
He ALWAYS reminds us to do our work, study for tests, and to complete our service learning ours. He always checked up on us too just to make sure we were doing our work and that whatever needed to get done was getting done.
He would constantly mention how there were many things going on and that Service Learning was important for the course. He would mention and stress how important each test, attendance, etc was to our grade and the course.
He has study days where we go over what we are confused on before a test
He emailed the us if we missed class to make sure that we were okay and trying to stay in the course.
He always re asked questions and forced students to get involved
Extra help, and always asks for questions.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, very good teacher
With the easy-to-follow lessons and the enthusiasm that he brings to the class if the class is also just as enthusiastic, I would definitely recommend him to other students. One does not have to be in the botany field to understand and become engrossed by the lessons that are discussed in every class. Talking to my classmates, many of said that they originally taken the class to fulfill a requirement but near the end of the semester, many have voiced how much they've learned and applied from the class to their outings for their Service Learning activities. Through his class, we all feel like more informed individuals and are becoming a bit more involved with the world outside our own.
I would recommend Michael Ross for any student interested in science, botany, and/or conservation biology. He provides a unique perspective that differs from other teachers at both KCC and UH Manoa.
In some way I would recommend students to Michael Ross because he has a lot of information to share especially if they are going into the field of Botany but, if it is a student who wants to take his class to fill a requirement like me, I would not recommend it because that would put too much stress on that student and may cause them to fall behind in other classes because you would constantly be reading and studying the reading throughout each section.
Yes, extremely interesting class that will offer a lot of great information.
I would definitely recommend this class to other students. Especially for those that like working in any environment.
yes, very great lecture, educational, informative, fun.
Yes because he knows what he is talking about
I would recommend Kumu Ross to students because he is a great teacher. Very passionate about what he teaches. I took ethnobotany from the previous botany teacher and I didnt care for her very much. Kumu Ross is much better.
Yes this was the second botany class I took with a different teacher and I did way better this time around and enjoyed it a lot more
Yes, I learn a lot from him.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Though the beginning the semester was a bit rocky (though it was completely understandable as to why), I definitely did enjoy the class and feel like I am a more informed individual as I make my way through my career path. Hopefully with this information and knowledge, I can stand out amongst those in the field and share it with others. And really hoping to take another class whenever the chance for it arise.
Passionate about his field.
Service learning was my favorite part of this course. I learned so much about different sites and even more about native and non-native species. I learned more about how humans have severely impacted the environments in which we live in.
Keep it up!
18. Other comments:
Yay for not doing another last minute eCAFE! Doing it a few days before the cut off date! *keyboard slaps*
Outstanding! 10/10
I know that all the assignments in his class is just reading but sometimes it would be good if you have like samples worksheets of what you are looking for in your exams and doing like knowledge checks after so many parts in each section. The study guide that we had for the first exam I feel was not helpful at all because I studied the guide and read all the readings and when the test was returned I had a grade that I didnʻt expect.
Awesome teacher!
The exams were hard enough especially the take home final. You can definitely tell when people are paying attention in class based off the notes they write in the tests which is why there should be a limit on the amount of times a person can miss class. It was not fair how certain people only showed up on the day that the THT #2 just so they could get it and then stop showing up to class after that.
Nothing

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Professor Rossâ??s major strengths is his extensive knowledge of the botany field and he isnâ??t afraid to say he does not know an answer and will work with the students to arrive to an answer. He easy to approach to ask for questions or help and is very fair in time between students who needs help. The way he structured the class in preparing the students before heading out in the field was very helpful and very enriching.
I don't know a single person who knows this subject as good as Professor Ross does.
Knew about Hawaiian botany
Michael Ross is a great teacher because he is passionate about what he is teaching which in turn helps students build a dependable lexicon for future science based classes and a better understanding the natural world.
His enthusiasm for the native flora is amazing and keeps students engaged!
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
(-nothing-)
I don't have anything that I suggest to be changed. All the field trips we went on were great. I will recommend this class and the lecture to everyone I know who is looking to take a science course.
none
None.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
After covering an overview of the lab exercises for the day and releasing the students to work on it, Professor Ross would periodically check-in with each student to see how far they are into the exercises and ask if they are trouble or need help with the activity. He is also open to student if there is a dispute among group members during the group experiments and tries his best to resolve any issue to the best of his ability. In short, he shows a great amount of concern for his students though sometimes the students need to make it known if they are troubled.
Always posts our grades as soon as he gets the chance and provides useful feedback in order for us to improve.
taught students about collecting data
Michael Ross offered several extra credit opportunities for the students, all of which reinforced material from the class. He would also work with students that had additional questions or needed more information.
Would try to find way to help students find success.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would definitely recommend Professor Ross to students that have a passion to learn within the Botany field or wishes to learn more about the local unique environment of Hawaiâ??i. Those who just takes the class just because they need to fulfill the requirement are still welcomed because they will soon find themselves loving the field and maybe its inner workings. I mainly recommend those who are interested in this field because they will learn a lot from his class that will aid them as they go further down this career path. But in the end, both sides will walk away with more than a grade and credits; they will have greater insight to what is around them that many people of Hawaiâ??i does not realize or takes for granted.
I would recommend professor Ross to other students because he provides a good learning environment and keeps things "fun" but still takes the course serious. But I would also suggest that students take the lecture with the lab. I felt the lecture was much easier to understand since we got to go out physically and see and feel the different plants in different areas.
yes, awesome teacher
I would definitely recommend Michael Ross to other students because his classes are fun and informative.
yes, take lab with lecture
Yes, they would learn a lot and really enjoy their experience.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
The field trips were amazing; not only because we were able to get out of the lab and work outside in the fresh air, we were all able to have a more hands-on learning experience and it was a learning tool that many of us applied into the lecture class. It was pretty much also a bonding experience between everyone which makes it even more fun and something that we all look forward to.
It was nice having a teacher that was able to take us out. The previous labs that I took, my professors were much older and somewhat disabled. Thanks for being in shape Professor Ross!
I liked how it was an extension to the classroom, great class
Awesome teacher!
18. Other comments:
Wish I could take the lab again. The trips were fun and the people in the lab were great.
Mahalo nui for a fun semester Professor Ross.
It was great to be outside for a few labs. Being in the field made the learning experience more valuable. Thank you Mr. Ross!

The greatest strength Professor Ross has during the semester is his patience while working with me on the semester long project. He also was very knowledgeable from his own research on the current invasive algae species problem plaguing Hawaiâ??iâ??s waters.
Same as bot 130
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Same as Bot 130
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
I believe he shows immense concern for his students. He tries to show the student that they have a lot of potential and that what we do with the experiments can make an impact. Or at least for my case, it felt very uplifting being told that what we are doing can benefit the environment in numerous ways.
Same as Bot 130
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Would definitely recommend to other students if they wish to go more in-depth than what is done in the regular lecture/lab classes. It is very challenging but also very enriching and rewarding course and the instructor does his best to help aid the student with the experiment and to meet their full potential.
Same as Bot 130
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
(Anonymity isnâ??t my strength it seemsâ?¦ Itâ??s fine.) Just wanted to say thank you so much for the opportunity to work under you in this research course. Though we did face a number of obstacles, ranging from finding our plant and what occurred among them in the experiment, it was all still fun and hopefully what we have found will be of great use within the state in combating the invasive species of algae. Also thank you so very much for putting up with me and all the shenanigans that I have done throughout the course of the semester, from the emails and questions/uncertainty that keep popping up.

Feed the urchin, he/she/they stay hungry. Very hungry. Like, nearing wanting human flesh potentially hungry. And Iâ??d write more for all the written portions but Iâ??m pretty wiped and rather say it upfront, if can.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He is a very enthusiastic teacher which in turn made the class materials interesting to learn.
Good communication with students
Michael Ross is passionate, concise, and has clear - easy to understand, and engaging lectures. He makes science feel easy and sound fun, which isn't a very easy thing to do. I can't recall a time in my life before this class I got psyched for learning about a genetic codon.
He is very passionate about what he teaches. Because he is so passionate students, such as myself, find more interest in the course.
He is so passionate about what he teachers, and he passes that down to each one of his students! Was able to answer any question, and he cares about his students. Professor Ross really knows his subjects!
He is very passionate about botany and knows what he's talking about
He is passionate, knowledgable and caring. The absolute best teacher i have ever had and he really wants to make a difference. He sees the faults in society and shows us both sides of the argument and tells us to do more research and to make our own opinion. He encourages questions and is knowledgeable beyond belief. He wants us all to be active members of the community and gives and shows us opportunities to. This guy really needs a raise and a high five because he is absolutely awesome. Please give him more say in the school because he deserves it, i don't know how much time he has for that considering all of the community work he already does but he really is the best teacher i have ever had and encourages us students to want to love to learn and to make our own opinions. I have never had a teacher who can show his own opinion without being biased and one who is so passionate about helping and educating.
Passionate. Professional. Inspiring.
very knowledgeable, provided a lot of events to encourage students to learn more about the subject. We are able to made connection between ourselves and the materials we learned in class.
He has the ability to make the subject passionate for many.
He is very well informed in plant anatomy and deeply shows his concern for the native species on the island.
He is very enthusiastic about Botany. He knows what he is talking about and his passion shows in the way he is able to bring light to the course, and other outside issues.
He is very enthusiastic about teaching and talking about botany.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
class activities
None.
None at the moment, one of very few teachers that I absolutely enjoyed learning from.
Nothing at all.
-- snipped --
he has it down, honestly.
I wouldn't change a thing. I only wish I had enrolled for the lab as well.
because bot101 is a foundation course, a lot of new materials will cover in this class, a lot of new words, this may reduce the students interest. It is different than bot130, a lot of examples we can find in real life. student can't found much examples in real life from bot101, it is a challenge.

Please move the class out of the dungeon. Its a nice ocean view on the outside, but the inside is like a dungeon with pleasant lighting.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He always showed signs of being available, he would often say come and see him if you need help or if you have questions or concerns. It was easy to approach him with problems and such.
remembers everyones names
Michael Ross keeps regular office hours, and helps whenever he can, if it's needed. You can't really ask for more than that.
He urged for students to always come to his course as we not only learn course material, but things about our everyday surroundings. He also took time out of his schedule to do study sessions. (Which really helped us students).
Would stay after class, would host study sessions before every quiz and exam. Graded everything promptly and sent emails to when the grades were posted. Would answer his phone anytime during office hours, and was always enthusiastic towards students that needed extra help.
he would review things constantly whenever the class couldn't answer his questions
he had study sessions, told us to come by his office whenever and encouraged us to stay after class and ask questions. He never wanted anyone to get left behind.
He always encouraged participation, related the subject to fields we can apply outside of the classroom. Offered extra credit activities. Was always available for further questioning after class.
always encourage students to study on the materials and provided a lot of help outside of the class.
Always asked questions if students had issues.
Near the end of the semester, he openly tells the class that many students aren't as interested as he would like them to be and worries of how they are going to pass the class.
He keeps encouraging the students to participate.
He gives some opportunities for extra credits.
with great concern
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes! He is a great teacher and knows how to make Botany a great class.
yes, excellent teacher
Definitely. I watched Michael Ross change the way my classmates think about Botany. Teachers like Micheal Ross will produce more Botanists in the world.
Absolutely recommend to other students. Whether you are a major in Botany or not, his class is very interesting and an eye-opener.
Absolutely. I learned so much from his course, and he really shows the difference between a instructor that loves what he is teaching, and one who struggles to get to class and teach every day.
Yes, I was recommended this class by one of my friends and I've recommended it to my sisiter
Absolutely. He is very passionate and knowledgeable and encourages you to take chances and to ask questions. Very active member of the community who does not want to do anything but help people
I highly recommend Professor Ross...since the beginning of the semester I have constantly suggested this course to students.
Yes, I like the class and the subject. There are a lots of things cover, but is good to know it.
Hell yes. Best instructor in this campus.
Sure, if the students are really interested in how nature works and worry about how much of nature is changing, I would highly recommend his to his class.
Yes because he is very knowledgeable and influential.
I don't recommend the class to students who aren't really interested in botany because the quizzes and the exams are tricky and they requires great efforts and time to study.
heck yes
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
He is an overall great teacher, he grades quickly and explains the coursework as much as possible. Plus, he's always available for help and offers quiz reviews in his office before the class.
nothing
One of the few teachers whose class I really enjoyed!
Excited to take Bot 130.
He's a cool dude
It is very rare to see an individual who has so much faith in the good of people. He really wants to see us succeed as a species and shows many ways to better ourselves and others.
I'd like to thank him for his dedication and genuine instruction. His teachings helped me with self discovery and must admit it was a life changing semester.

I strongly feel that the chemistry and biology courses are prerequisites in this BOT course. Also, this course requires service-learning and students taking this course must be informed on that before the course starts.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Knowledgeable and Reliable
Mike is very passionate for Ethnobotany and his field. He always makes class fun and interesting for everyone every class.
Very passionate and knows the material is able and willing to answer questions. Professor Ross is a great instructor and I would love to take more of his classes.
He is passionate about his field and it really shows through his teaching.
Always tries to help students by giving opportunities to gain more points
he wants to teach you everything he knows
Mr. Ross' strengths as a teacher is that he knew his subject matter in and out. His knowledge of the course work we have learned in class is beyond impressive in that he presents lectures and its information while referring to no resources but the powerpoint. He also makes his lectures engaging, even when material can be a bit overwhelming sometimes. Throughout his lectures he engages his students by asking questions, or opinions on subjects. However the most admirable strength the Mr. Ross has a teacher is that he really knows how to facilitate students in the classroom. I feel that his presence and energy that he exudes earns him a lot of respect from my peers and myself, and I commend him for that. Especially when comparing to other professors in the UH community college system.
He is very knowledgeable and knows the material well. He is organized and very good at explaining things.
He knows the subject well and makes the class lectures very interesting to listen to.
I could fill this whole prompt with great things about Mike, but to put it simply: Mike is an INCREDIBLE instructor with an obvious passion, and abundounce amount of knowledge for botany/agriculture. It was great to learn from, talk to, and argue with Mike about various topics and i hope to cross paths again in the future.
Dr. Ross knows the material and presents it in an interesting and easy to understand lecture.
He is really passionate to teach us Botany, so I enjoyed take his lecture every time.
He Has Passion for botany
He was very passionate teacher.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Nothing he is a great teacher
None
Maybe having more samples of the plants we are learning about.
no changes, he cherry.
None
The amount of Hawaiian on exams is a bit much, Mike. I completely understand that it is an Ethnobotany course and that cultural education is a part of it, but many people in the class have zero, or little, Hawaiian culture/language exposure so on top of the material we are also learning brand new words. I think that having the common name along with the Hawaiian name would be a wonderful way to promote learning.
Have a study guide for Hawaiian language used in the class. Give weekly quizes. The test have too many questions.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Give us ride to our service learning activities
He always told us that we could talk to him or email him if we needed help with something or had questions about anything. Also, he would always be free for answering questions after class.
He would always try to answer people's questions even if it meant getting a little off course of the specific material.
Remembered names of every students in the class in two days
He doesn't give up on students
By always letting students know his office hours, and making himself approachable, friendly, and available.
yes
Helped to arrange rides to service learning events in class to make sure all who wanted to participate, could.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
YES Take his class
Yes, definitely! Mike is very passionate for the subject of Ethnobotany and I very much enjoyed his class. He makes learning fun, and he makes you understand the different topics discussed in class in a very fun and engaged manner. He grades very fairly, and is always accessible for questions and help on anything through either email, or in person after or before class. The best thing about Mike is that he knows your name and he gets to know you as the course goes on. I really loved his class.
Definitely. He is a cool guy who loves what he does.
yes. he's a good instructor
I would definitely recommend Michael Ross to students as it is not just an easy-peasy "A" class. You will actually learn the subject, have opportunities to critically think about the material, and take away a lot of knowledge and experience even if the course subject is not your major.
Yes, he is one of the best teachers I've had in college
ABSOLUTELY!
Yes. Books are interesting, lecture is easy to follow, power points are posted to assist in studying.
Yes but only to students who have had Botany 101
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
HE IS THE BEST TEACHER
He is the BEST teacher ever! I learned so much from Mike, and I will take what I learned in Ethnobotany and use it in my daily life, and hopefully pass it on to others, and help make the community more aware of the topics we discussed in class.
He keeps class interesting with his thorough knowledge of plants.
he is cherry.
I feel that Michael Ross is a great asset to Kapiolani Community College, and I enjoy his teaching style and professionalism in the classroom.
One of the best instructors at KCC.
Smart, helpful and open minded. Excellent combination of qualities in anew academic guide.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
energetic
understanding and very professional
He's very passionate in what he does, informative and proactive with related topics as well. I really liked the reminders for when due dates were approaching, those were really crucial for me.
He knew the subject area very well, I feel like I learned a lot of information that I didn't expect to learn in this course, and they're all information that are local issues that should be addressed.
He's very passionate about the subject and makes sure everyone understands what he's talking about
Unfortunately I mixed up the BOT lab and BOT lecture surveys so this will be for lab instead. Professor Ross is very passionate and knowledgeable about every aspect of botany we covered. In lab we had a smaller group of people so he was much more personable in lab which was a great experience to have in addition to lecture. Professor Ross had the perfect balance of outdoor activities (eco system field trips), science (brief lecture-style talks, terrarium project and microscope work) and Hawaiian culture (exploring plants on campus and the field trips). The tests were a challenge but VERY hands on. We got to see the plants we had talked about in lecture and had read about in our xeroxed pages and have a point of reference instead of everything being just on paper.
Kumu Ross is a great teacher. He is very clear and enthusiastic with his curriculum. I enjoyed learning from him, and would recommend his course to my peers.
Professor Michael Ross know his subject and teaches it with passion. He is extremely organized and encourages us to participate in class daily.
He knows anything about plants.
He teaches the material well and he knows the material like the back of his hand! It is also great that he returns our exams fairly fast.
having a lot of knowledge of plants. unique class.
Defining what was expected and making it clear. Mr.Ross is very understanding and approachable. He is very good as a teacher in my opinion and passionate about what he is teaching that inspires his students.
professor Ross is passionate about his work
Very knowledgeable of the subject taught. Very willing to answer questions and encouraged participation.
Knowledgeable in course content, humorous, disciplined, focused, flexible, fair, organized.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
no service learning
To upload powerpoints to laulima BEFORE having a presentation. Its just much easier to have on hand while following with the lecture.
Announce extra credit opportunities earlier in advance
None
I wouldn't change anything about lab. Maybe just that it would be twice a week because it was so enjoyable!
N/A
I think he is doing just fine. I have learned a lot from him.
Nothing special.
Don't pound on the desk so hard.

Hmm...wow, maybe cut down some of the lecture materials? As in maybe have the students look through some of that content on their own and do some Q and A in class about topics? Although to be fair, botany is a very detailed discipline so there is just a wealth of information that has to be given out to students so...(as in I not sure if you can just "lop off" information lol).
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
hey gave out extra credit opps and let people turn things in late
He reminded them of how important attendance affected your grade, how no participation hurts your grade as well and asked if we had seen other classmates because he hasn't seen or heard from them.
He would answer every question that students had and stop lecture whenever someone had a question or comment and never talked over anyone.
He encouraged class participation and offered extra credit because he noticed some people missed/skipped class which takes away from participation points.
Professor Ross had a much smaller class for BOT lab so he was able to dedicate more time to each of us and answer questions. He would make sure everyone understood everything and if people looked confused he would help them out.
Kumu Ross showed concern for students through service learning, having us participate in class, and always providing a professional and accessible environment.
He show concern for all of his students. He will warn us to keep up with our reading and prepare for our exam. He reminds us do our service learning.
He has engagement with his classmates. When i asked a questtion to him, he treated that politely and it was really easy to understand.
oral, laulima, slides
Always knowing each of us as a student and where we are in learning or struggling.
He found us a classroom that was more suitable for lectures instead of being taught botany in a chemistry lab. He also allowed us to speak our suggestions and provided warnings ahead of time as far as due dates for assignments.
He was understanding of individual students situations, flexible, fair, gave extra credit opportunities that expanded the concept of sustainability and ecosystems, and gave service learning opportunities at the KCC Greenhouse (I enjoyed that part very much!) :)
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes he taught me a lot
Yes, because he's very familiar with what he's touching, passionately informative, gives examples of where plants are located and very descriptive through his course.
Yes, he knows exactly what he's talking about, and when he doesn't, he's honest about not knowing it instead of making something up to pretend that he knows the correct answer.
Yes! He's awesome and you will learn a lot from him
ABSOLUTELY. He's just extremely competent and this lab course goes hand in hand with lecture in my opinion. I know it wasn't mandatory but I'm so glad I took it. It's invaluable.
I would recommend Kumu Ross to students, because he creates an environment that is very productive for learning about botany.
I would definately recommend him to other students because he is a organized, passionate and helpful teacher.
yes, I recommend taking his class if you are interested in Botany because he is a nice person and i can tell he is an enthusiastic teacher!
Yes! It is a great class and it really motivates you to get rid of invasive species and makes you want to plant all the endemic and endangered plants as you can!
yes, because his class was fun and he is kind. But, content was a little difficult
Definitely, for the reasons above.
I would recommend this class as requirement to all students
Yes because he is able to teach this class well while allowing the students to participate and service learning was like the hands on experience.
I would DEFINITELY recommend him to students because quite simply...he knows his stuff. He is also firm but fair and he lays out all what is expected of the students in a very transparent way. He also has a good sense of humor too :D
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
he was an awesome teacher I really enjoyed his classes
He's cool!
Lab was much easier to participate actively in because of the amount of people. It didn't feel like everyone was talking over each other to get the participation credit the same way lecture could tend to get. All in all a great course.
Mahalo nui Kumu Ross for a wonderful class. I would love to see a class about aquatic plants offered by Kumu Ross, and I hope that will be in the near future.
I trully enjoyed this class. I think Micheal Ross is an excellent teacher. If I could I would like to take another class he is teaching.
I really like your class!
Thank you for a great semester!
the class was fun
I loved his class and he inspired me to learn more about Botany.
I am glad I had the opportunity to take his class.
Not much else except the pacing was pretty good in this course...loved the extra credit opportunities, the take home exam angle, the service learning opportunities at the KCC Greenhouse, and the Pa'ina (definitely keep all of these and haha definitely give that take home exam in a timely fashion...no giving it over Thanksgiving break or Spring Break lol...glad we didn't have that issue^^).
18. Other comments:
I feel that 25 hours of service learning is too much for one semester, especially for full-time students with jobs. The process of logging in hours and submitting them is confusing. That's the only thing I did not enjoy about taking this course, the service learning. Also, the classroom was uncomfortably cold.
Again this is for botany LAB not the lecture class.
One of my favorite teachers ever.
nothing
Thank you very much! I really enjoyed your classes. I learned a lot.
Nope except I enjoyed his course and I hope he gets students in his next class that are kinda vocal like us haha :D

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Mr. Ross is able to teach students by a hands on experience technique which I thought was my best way to learn. He is very knowledgeable of the materials taught.
he knows his info on the subject
He knows what he's teaching, very familiar with the subject and passionate in taking us to sites that related to the class.
Very knowledgeable in course content, funny, disciplined, organized, methodical (important for science stuff in my opinion), fair, open minded, flexible :)
treated students equally
He is Enthusiastic and passionate.
Professor Ross is by far the most passionate and knowledgeable teacher I've dealt with at KCC. He was able to answer nearly all of the questions people had in one way or another. His power points were ALWAYS up on Laulima and not only that but they were usually even done so before or right after class (within an hour of class ending). He never fell behind on the syllabus, which made the class very stable.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
none
Hmm...I can't really think of anything right now. I thought the pacing of the course was spot on :)
Honestly it's hard to find anything to change. The one slight irritation I had was that he sometimes goes VERY quickly past parts of the power point so notes can be hard to take, unless you're a speed-writer. That being said he does put everything on Laulima so you can supplement anything you missed after class. Another thing is that this is a large class. It was sometimes hard to get a word in because a lot of students would just shout things out instead of raising their hands. I think this is due to class participation being such a huge part of the grade. I do see it as an issue if everyone has to participate so much for that portion of the grade it becomes a bit of a competition. It got a little better as the semester went on, though, in the end it became one large discussion everyone could participate in.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He mentioned how not participating in class could really hinder your grade and he would ask for students if he hadn't heard or seen them.
He was available by email and office hours, he sent reminder emails and told us verbally to stay on course during the course :) Of course, he was also empathetic as it pertained to some of our student issues (e.g. service learning kinks) and was understanding of our individual situations :)
oral, slides,
Professor Ross would talk to students who were falling behind and showed a strong interest in people coming to class on time and not missing class. He was VERY active via email and responded with very little waiting time. Also again, because he is very passionate about the subject he was very enthused at students shared interest in the subject.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes he was fun and i learned a lot
Yes, because it's a lot of fun, he is very helpful and resourceful. He does his best to clarify and explain things to you in a way that you'll understand.
I would definitely recommend him to students because he knows his subject very, very well. In addition, his pacing of the course is very good...and come on...love the field trips we did to further enhance our understanding of our native plants, the environment, and the data collection methods that scientists use in the field :)
yes. This class is active, so it is fun
Something I didn't understand was going to be a part of this course prior to the first day of class was service learning. IF you don't have time for the additional 25+ hours of service learning outside of class I would not suggest this class. It is a vital part of getting everything you can out of class but it IS also very time consuming. Otherwise I couldn't recommend this class more! It's enthralling, entertaining and professor Ross is an expert at imparting vast amounts of knowledge. This is by far the class I've enjoyed most this semester and it has opened up a world I knew virtually nothing about prior to taking the course.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
He's Cool!
Not much else except that I enjoyed this lab class because of the concepts I learned about, the pacing of the lab course was spot on (in my opinion), and the field work enhanced our understanding of the concepts covered in the course.
Professor Ross needs to just keep doing what he's doing. I can only hope he'll be teaching new botany classes in the future because I would attend any class he teaches in a heartbeat.
18. Other comments:
Not much else except thank you for a very informative, fun, and well paced semester...students would be lucky to have a solid professor like him for a lab course :)
