9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I like that Yuka always makes discussion in the class, and she calls students to speak up and joined the discussion. Yuka gives opportunity for students to ask question, and share their culture. It helps students to understand better culture of other places. She keeps update news and information for students. It is very interesting too.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I want her to little bit more strict in some point like ask students to prepare a powerpoint slide for the presentation, also submit the paper on time. She has to make students take the course more seriously.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Yuka is a great teacher. I think she needs to improve her teaching especially when she gives an assignment to do, she needs to explain clearly. Well, she does explain clearly but what i mean is to give a reminder for students by sending email that the due date is tomorrow, something like that.

Yuka always gives feedback on exams and essays, but it would be good if she gives the feedback a little bit more detail and put more questions, or maybe talk to the students.

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I really appreciated her combination of academic journals, manga and anime. I think they really helped to get the full circumference of concepts that should be included in a Japanese pop culture class.
Being introduced to new concepts and having them explained so rationally. I was asked to think, one of the nicest things a professor can ever do for a student :)
Critically thinking outside the box and digging deep to find the meaning behind the authors literature.
The reading selections for this course were awesome. All of the readings were really interesting and I also enjoyed the episodes that we watched.
Learnign about Japan and the many thnigns that affected their culture as a whole
the readings were very valuable and the discussions were fantastic!
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I cannot think of something that was least valuable. I can think of something that was least pleasurable and that was the weekly responses but I think they are completely necessary.
The professor did not have a strong understanding of how the chat and discussion features work on Laulima. As a result of the way the discussions were set up, we were not really able to "talk" with our classmates. We parroted certain phrases, ("I agree with Tom...), but we could not reply to Tom's post specifically or argue / support points made by individuals.
lots of reading.
Nothing really, because without the material needed to read, wouldn't be able to analytically dissect the meaning behind the readings.
The instructor was not friendly and also difficult to resolve problems with. She didn't want to be contacted via email and wouldn't respond to some emails when help was needed.
No to sure, they all seemd valuable

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I know that from my perspective I work and am not always home at 5pm on fridays when things are due so I would have to time my committments so that I could turn it in thursday nights instead, and I found that to be difficult sometimes. But I agree with the prof, that deadlines are important to have so I respect that. Also I understand it can be frustrating when people do not respect those deadlines set and therefore do not turn things in on time, and then email the prof looking for allowances to be made, but I do not think sending out emails that were mildly passive aggressive to the entire class is an appropriate means of reinforming people that they need to respect those deadlines. I think if people mess up they mess up. And if they cant find the time or energy to turn things in on time then so be it. Their priorities are obviously not school. If I had been in her position I would have just let them fail instead of sending on strictly worded emails. Even though I turned things in on time I still felt reprimanded by her emails at times. I did not intend on this to take up so much of the ecafe but I felt like it needed to be said.
If you won't accept late assignments, change your syllabus. If you do accept them, be clear about the deadline for accepting late assignments. Your current syllabus states that 1 point will be deducted for each day the assignment is late - that is not a deadline. Technically, that means I could still turn it in after nine days to try and get 1 point. If you have a 3 or 4 day max for late work, just say so. But... to avoid all of that, for the love of god, please give students the weekend to do their assignments (at least Saturday!). There are several of us who have insanely pact schedules and cannot do the amount of work you assign in just five days.
I know for an online course it's hard. Maybe posting the deadline a little further 11:55pm Friday, since majority of people work and don't know what time they Finish. And instead of making EVERYTHING due in one day, discussions should be due earlier than reading assignments, because of the amount of writing and thinking.
Maybe improving her attitude as a teacher would make the course a little more enjoyable. I got the sense that she didn't really want to be teaching the course. She also could make herself a little more available especially because a large portion of the class was having problems submitting assignments but it was terribly difficult to get ahold of her.
Include more anime to watch
maybe the final paper can be 4 pages instead of 6-8

Thank you for the wonderful class.
Awesome Job!
Love the course subject!!!! Best class I had in UH yet:)
I did really enjoy this course but the instructor's unfriendly attitude made it a little less enjoyable. I understand that she is not here to hold our hands through the course, however, there are better ways to communicate with the class and sending harsh emails is not one of these ways.
I didnt know if there was a TA so I dont know how effective they were
Yuka is a great teacher! I hope she continues teaching in UH Manoa! I want to take more classes from her! :)

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
There were a number of interesting perspectives in the books we read.
The discussions helped us think critically about what we were reading
Reading Responses
Greater understanding of behavior unique to the Japanese people and culture
very organized class
The papers / books she asked us to read. My last online course was using materials that were 30 years old. I felt that she selected materials that built on each other and helped to improve my understanding of the societal challenges Japan is facing and why.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The "discussions" portion was more a headache than valuable. I felt as if I were regurgitating my reading assignment toward the classroom. It would have made more sense just to post our papers and be done.
no lectures
"Discussion"
too much reading, Too much reading, less reading please! and the PDF files need to be able for us to use control + find. more extra credit would be fantastic!
The "conversations" need to be structured differently. I really wanted to participate in conversations with my classmates, but there was no way to "reply" directly to a classmates comments. The "post" feature was functioning oddly on our discussion board and made it very difficult. I would see a comment I wanted to engage in, but could not respond directly to it; I had to "remember" what was said, scroll down for miles, try to "remember" who said it, and then make my post. Later, I discovered the "quote" button, but commenting this way made the reply geographically so far removed from the original comment that again, there was no "thread" to our conversations.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Much of the instructions were extremely unclear. I often didn't know what was happening and grades were posted so infrequently and randomly that I wasn't sure if I was progressing, going backward, or just stagnant.
have powerpoints of lectures, not just reading
Reduce amount of reading so students can focus instead of just generalities.
she is a great teacher, i just think we should have less readings, students these days are not cut to read as much as older generations
For those of us who work full time (typical for online students) her Monday assignment posting and Friday 5pm due date made on-time submission impossible for me. It took me 3-4 days to read the material, make my notes and prepare my 3-5 page response and 3 discussion posts. I am sitting in traffic at 5pm on Fridays. Even a midnight due date would have helped, but the weekend (for either part of the assignment) would have been a godsend.

The ability to work alone and at the time I had available; which admittedly was not much.
the final paper was straight forward

Being able to do work on our own time
very organized course

I didn't understand what was happening at all. The instructor was not so much an instructor as I was used to, but more a forum moderator. I don't feel like I learned anything, but I did read some good material.
the discussions aren't really discussions
All busy work. I didn't really feel engaged or interested in the reading or discussions.
too much reading hehe
The way the discussion board functioned - I have been in online courses where it worked really well. This appeared to be a technical problem mainly - but I also preferred a previous instructors requirement that we post two questions of our own and reply to at least two classmates questions in addition to our response to the instructors questions. However, even this approach would not have worked given the technical problems we had "replying" to a classmates posts (we could not).

32. Other comments:
My review seems negative, but I really did like our instructor. My main problems were with the format of the course, most of which I am certain she had no real control over. Online courses where I cannot ask questions and have them answered in a direct and logical way is just no good for me, personally. I said it a few times already, but I just did not know what was happening and none of the answers I got about it made any sense either. Regardless, the instructor was knowledgeable and attempted to steer us in the direction she wanted things to go, which would likely have been more successful had she been able to teach in person. Final Assessment: Strong teacher. Terrible format. Anthropology needs the "Anthro" part in the classroom.
more extra credit would be great! and less amount of reading hehe

2. If this course was taken to fulfill course requirements for your concentration/major, how did this course enhance your personal and/or professional development in your concentration/major?
Yuka emphasized the cultural relativism concept a lot when discussing other cultures that will definitely benefit me when I do my fieldwork for SOC.
This course improved my personal development in my concentration by understanding human kind.
did more harm than good. 10/10 would not recommend
Anthropology deals with a lot of societal and personal concepts and theories, so this course has really enhanced my personal development, and I am sure it will enhance my professional development later in the future. This course was needed to fulfil a requirement for my GenEds, but it has overall helped me develop knowledge that is applicable to myself and to the world around me.
It was not specific to my major; it was taken to satisfy a GE requirement.

There are enough activities that are needed for this course.
activities. group read articles and have a class discussion. test review/trivia game.
The course uses a textbook for exams and films for essays. These methods of are efficient enough to aid my learning.
The basic components of this course consist of 1) lectures 2) discussions 3)essays 4) films 5) exams. Although it was organized, this class didn't move me. I thought it was going to be fun and interesting but all be did was listen to her talk and not only that but she goes to fast in her power point, making it hard for us to take notes. It was hard for me to learn in this class.
I can't think of any constructive criticism or improvements for this class other than possibly some more modern material.

16. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Less lectures
I thoroughly enjoyed Yuka's technique of really analyzing and deeper thought to view things below the surface. She speaks very clearly and I found her to be a great public speaker. It is easy to follow her as she is clear and concise.
More in-class discussion. Consider better ppt organization, just to aid in student note taking.
I do not think that there are any suggestions that i would give to this professor because the teaching style or methods are good.
dont get off topic when lecturing. more enthusiasm when presenting material and concepts. break down theoretical debates, make it easier to understand.
Hasegawa's teaching style is primarily lecture-based. Hasegawa presents films, news articles and recordings, PowerPoint presentations and anecdotal references to help students understand the material. Some suggestions that I would like to see improve are take-home assignments. PowerPoint presentations and films are very sufficient in learning, but the natural way to comprehend material is through homework to evaluate the basic understanding of the content throughout the course. Other than homework, Hasegawa's teaching methods are fantastic.
PowerPoint wise, it'll be more interesting if she didn't read off everything on the PowerPoint and if she went a little slowing. By this explain more interesting thought into the point on the power point. It was hard to me to understand as she kept reading from the power point, throughout the class time. Maybe some group work and group activities would make the class less boring.
Not all of the videos but some of them were really boring and hard to understand or relate to so maybe picking more interesting videos.
I only have positive feedback here: I really liked the way she mixed up the tests with the essays on applying the material learned. I liked her pace of the class and I appreciated the low-stress environment. I only have good things to say!
17. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
great professor
A great teacher. I would recommend her class to anyone interested in understanding the world from a multi-cultural perspective.
My overall evaluation of this professor is that she helps you to understand anthropology and how it works.
nice and understanding, but needs to improve with teaching skills. i didnt learn a thing by going to class. sometimes, i had to teach myself the material through the textbook. going to class seemed like a waste of time and money.
Instructor Hasegawa is very knowledgeable about anthropology, and she can easily explain the material in many different ways for students who learn differently. She has a good history with anthropological instances and concepts, to which she can integrate that into her lectures for a thorough instruction.
Nice and helpful, but it'll be better if your lectures would be more interesting but including more examples and try not to read straight from the power point. Move the class, make it more interesting. You'd know when the class is engaged if a lot of student asked questions and spoke out their thoughts while your lecturing. Sadly, the class was quiet throughout class time.
She is a really nice and good professor. Easy to talk to and tries her best to make things easier for her students. She was really understanding and that was greatly appreciated.
I'm pleasantly surprised on how much I enjoyed this class thanks to the teacher, Miss Hasegawa. I really enjoyed the structure of her class. She does not dump more material on the students than they can handle; the work was very manageable. Miss Hasegawa is genuinely interested in the well-being of the students and makes sure they're grasping the material and that it's not going over their heads. She has a very pleasant demeanor is very patient and approachable. This class was very refreshing.

20. My overall evaluation of this course is...
great class
A great way to introduce cultural anthropology briefly in all it's respects.
My overall evaluation of this course is that it was fun and i really enjoyed taking this course.
did me more harm than good. 10/10 wouldnt recommend
Anthropology covers a lot within the social sciences. I am very satisfied by this course because of the content I am able to learn and utilise it into my professional career. It covers concepts, theories, anthropologists and worldly occurrences, which all revolve around anthropological research and concepts within anthropology. I would enjoy taking an anthropology class again to further expand my learning of the subject.
Hard to understand, hard to be engaged.
I really liked the flow of the class. There were no surprises and we all knew what was expected of us. The paper assignments were not overly complex and she really made you think outside of the box which I liked. I liked the discussion topics and overall I am really happy I took this course. Thanks.

2. If this course was taken to fulfill course requirements for your concentration/major, how did this course enhance your personal and/or professional development in your concentration/major?
This course helped me culturally and spiritually. Learning different types of their traditions and things they would do for their own beliefs or culture.
Do did not enhance my major, its just a general requirement.
It fulfilled my requirement, but I don't think I gained much or learned from taking Professor Hasegawa's class, her teaching skills were inadequate.
The course trained my ability to view the world critically and through different perspectives

I think she should provide more activities for us to help us understand the course more.
I enjoyed the videos and readings we did in this class, hoewver I really didn't enjoy the lectures. Perhaps, there's a way to make things seem a bit more intreging. For example, the slides in your lecture could be a tad bit less wordy. You could put bullet points of the main ideas of the lecture and when you teach the class about it, expand on it. I'm not sure if there are any hands on activities that could match with this course, but if there is, maybe you could add them in, since throughout the entire semester all we did was focus on the textbook and watcha few films. I am more of a hands on learner, so this is why i would suggest this for future refrences to other students who would rather learn from hands on activites. Thank-You.
interaction of students.
Should do more group work discussion.
Hasegawa shouldn't be teaching, I don't think she is qualified to teach any course, let alone this one.

16. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
To improve the course, I think she should make it more interesting by using activities in between and not just lecture throughout the whole hour we're in the class for. She also should slow down with her lectures.
-making the lectures less wordy -slow down a bit when teaching the class -stick to your deadlines in your syllabus
maybe do case studies but with student interaction and hands on activies.
discussions groups.
Slow down, and generalize information
17. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Her lectures are good, but just make it more interesting. To not just educate us but also engage us in the lectures given.
She is a good teacher that makes the content of the class interesting. She allows us to critically analyze the concepts of cultural anthropology and apply to our everyday life. I thoroughly enjoyed this course.
Dr. Hasegawa has done a pretty good job teaching the class what was needed to be taught. I enjoyed the interesting cultures we assessed through film and articles. However, a feel this class was a little unorganized and hard to follow. Especially through the lectures. I also feel that the lectures should be posted on laulima, especially at the speed she lectures. Attendence is already mandatory and I understand that she doesn't want to make information that we went over available to the students who weren't in class. I think it would be more effectful though to students who want to go back and refer to the day's lecture.
Neutral for teaching skills.
A unworthy teacher

20. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I was always horrible at tests no matter what subject or how many hours i put into studying the test, I would always get a horrible grade. I don't blame the class nor the teacher. I felt like I should have tried harder in this class.
It's a good and interesting course. I liked it very much.
This course was pretty easy. Not too much work, but a little difficult to follow.
Okay class to learn Anthropology 152.
The course is a course that really changes ones views of culture. The course introduces perspectives and topics that really make one think about ones life.
21. Other comments:
This class was very interesting though. The best subject I learned in this class was the taboo part.
Thank-You for trying your best to teach the class well. I appreciate all that was done throughout this semester.
There was entirely too much writing required for this intro course. I ended up writing more in this class than I did in a UD WI course
