8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Being an international business major we covered a lot of material, I am already familiar with but presented it from an economic view and taught me to dig deeper and to question theories, concepts, or trade policies in order to understand them thoroughly.
I really enjoyed the readings and the discussion in class. I have a much better understanding of globalization after completing this course.
I gained a good understanding of trade policy through the case-study approach that professor Noy employed. Most of the books that we read analyzed trade policy and globalization through investigating specific cases, and the structure of the course followed this approach. It was useful doing the presentations because we learned (1) about the issue that we covered and (2) the issues that all the students covered.
the readings as well as in class discussions were my favorite. the instructor has a very deep knowledge to his topic which leads to an interesting class.
Reading the books. Very good insight into globalization.
His knowledge and how open he was to discussion and different opinions.
The written homework
Challenging group questions
The application of Ethics to the subject. To apply ones view of what justifiable in the world today and to be able to voice ones opinion about it enabled me to gain a different aspect of the reality of Globalization.
I valued the class presentations that we did and our discussion of ethics
The readings that were given were interesting and very informative. I enjoyed the discussions, and felt that we were held to a high standard with out work ethic with respects to our papers and project. I have not had a writing intensive course in a while, and I feel this class was effective in getting me to produce quality work.
The perspective provided by the professor of how international institutions worked and the understanding of how trade was conducted between countries was important.
This guys knows a lot in term of globalization of economy, I leaned a lot from him. Glad that I took this class.
I believe the 4 different books used as the assigned reading material were the most valuable. They gave an overall view and different opinions of the subject of globalization.
Everything
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
?
Hummm..... I can't think of one.
I would have liked a more systematic theoretical examination of trade policy. We focused primarily on ethical issues and specific cases. Although we did cover some theory in lecture and in the literature we read, I would have liked a solid textbook that would have exposed me to trade policy theory.

I thought that two days for writing the mid-term was not enough time and my grade suffered as a result of the time constraint pressure. English is not my native language, organizing my thoughts on paper, reviewing my grammar, and re-editing my text requires me more time compared to students who are english natives. Perhaps the fact that there are many non-native english natives in class the deadline for the mid-term exam should've been more carefully considered. I didn't score an A - however, I survived! :)
sometimes the assignments/tests can be a little overwhelming. as well as the standard. but i've learned alot from this course through all of the assignments, therefore, i'm not complaining! :) Thanks for the wonderful semester prof. Noy!
He is a great professor and I would like to take more Econ classes from him. He seemed intimidating at the beginning, but you could tell he cares for his students and wants them to succeed. I'm an Econ major and I would like to take more classes taught by Noy
Professor Noy is a respectable teacher. He asks for out take on certain subjects and does not look down on us. Rather, he values our input and responds with an argument that "shuts down" yours and makes you think about what you just said. He also provides in depth background on certain points to make sure we all know exactly what he is talking about. He is very knowledgeable and can even have a sense of humor. I'd gladly take a course from him again.
I loved the class and Ilan is a great teacher
Really great class overall.
Need to give him a better classroom .
I very much enjoyed the ethical discussions and the many different topics discussed in this class. I appreciated the way Prof. Noy would give both views of an argument without coloring it too much with his own opinion. This helped open up discussions. The assigned essays were a good way of critically thinking about the books through comparing the author's view points. Overall, a good class and great professor!
Great course

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I really enjoyed the discussions of real macro-economic phenomena. Keep it up!
Presentations
Presentations were valuable as well as the discussions that ensued during the presentations. The free flowing Q&A that Noy allows is some of the best interaction in a class I have ever had. Noy does a great job of adding to the conversation without dominating it and is open to new ideas and new theories. Noys approach to graduate coursework should be adopted by the whole department. The field courses should be designed to show you as many different topics in the field in hopes that you latch onto one of them and then run with it.

Noy is a great researcher and a great teacher.
We don't have a first class econ department, but I believe we do have some first class professors. Professor Noy definitely is one of my favorites. He conveyed his knowledge in such an interesting and effective way that I only hope I could take it again. Thanks so much!

6. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The short essays made you focus on concise writing.
Lectures were very informative and thought-provoking. The graphic representations were useful in illustrating the points Noy offered. If anything there weren't enough of them. Noy was open to discussion, which was always entertaining. Reading material was well-picked; did a very good job of providing contrasting opinions which enables the reader to formulate their own views about globalization. Short paper lengths demanded better writing/editing, which is a very useful skill - thanks!
The readings that were required and the writing assignments that went with them helped ensure I read the books very carefully.
Presentations and papers.
The student presentations. It got me to really apply the knowledge I learned in class in a global perspective and learn a lot more in depth about trade between countries.

Professor Noy and his effective and engaging dialogue about the subject matter. The books were good.
His discussions and the way he describes histrical events to understand economic theories.
I liked how Professor Noy used many real world examples in his class to help explain his point of view. He is a very knowledgeable person and a great teacher because of that reason. He is understanding that people learn in different ways and is able to use his vast knowledge to help make sure that they understand
The reading assignments and individual presentation.
The layout and analysis of the various ethical issues that came up
lots of input from real world examples
powerpoint presentations
Learning about how trade affects each group in society as well as foreign groups.
His knowledge about the subject was very valuable. The teacher was very versatile with topics that student gave regarding ethical issues of the coarse.
The writing assignments and the presentations. I would suggest making better criteria for the presentations so that students can pick better topics.
Professor Noy was the most valuable aspect of this course. I believe that many of the students in this class wouldn't have understood some of the concepts discussed in this class without him.
7. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The book by Naomi Klein, she is an idiot.
I feel the presentations were least valuable only because the assignment wasn't structured/outlined well enough. I'd like a list of guidelines or expectations rather than the grading rubric. Even though many of the topics presented were interesting, I feel we didn't focus enough on trade data - which is in no way Noy's fault, but this could have been avoided by offering an assignment sheet with useful resources to find relevant data. Even though Noy could not possibly provide a website/data source for every topic, it would have been nice to at least have some examples of credible, reliable data sources. The readings were very interesting but would have been more effective if we had half of the class period on the paper due date to discuss the question. Both of these 'problems' could have been overcome by student-initiative to ask Noy questions, and this is not to say he's not open to questions or that he's unavailable to meet outside class time for extra help, but these two aspects would have been very useful if they were offered during classtime - especially because I could not meet him during his office hours without skipping other classes.
Some of the presentations added little to no value, but that was more so because of the persons presentation and not a reflection on the teacher.
Nothing. Everything helped to understand trade policy and globalization.

I think most of it was valuable
Not much in this class I didn't like. I'm not a big reader so the part of reading the assigned readings was not fun for me, but at least the books were interesting and relativity easy to read.
I don't see any least valuable aspect in this course.
Everything has value

The lectures were very boring and although the readings were okay, they still
The only criticism I have for this class is that more economics concepts could have been incorporated and in greater depth.

Noy is one of the best professors that I have had in my four years at UH. I wish I had taken another class from him. I really enjoyed 362.
Noy is a great teacher because of his ability to explain material in more than one way, and his tendency to grade harder as the semester progresses, and his acceptance of class discussion when it arises. I would make only a few adjustments to the course but overall a very useful introduction to the material. Thanks!

Great teacher. I don't have any input on how to change the class. It was nicely laid out.

i love coffee now too!
One of the best professors in the economics department. Very knowledgeable in his area of study. Easy to talk to, down to earth, humorous, makes students want to come to class to learn. I would take another class from Professor Noy again!
I would recommend other students to take this class. You will come out learning things about economics and seeing things in new perspective. Great Class!
Good professor I would take another course from him.
Professor Noy is a great asset to the economics department at Manoa. Not only is he knowledgable, but demonstrates a clear ability to be able to teach students so that they clearly understand even the most difficult topics. He offers a sense of humor and definitely knows when to be serious.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
As a non-economics major I found all aspects of the course both enlightening and extremely valuable. I intend on utilizing many of the concepts learned in class throughout my career in business. Although the subject matter was particularly challenging for me, I looked forward to every class session and made sure never to miss class. Dr. Noy is extremely skilled at conveying the key points behind an idea with both depth and clarity. I appreciated his teaching style, and wished that more professors excelled at this skill. This was the most intellectually valuable class I have taken this semester.
Presentations were a good method to get practice presenting and explaining econ material, especially to non econ students.
The presentations were very valuable. The take home test, though very tough, was also presented in a way that yielded effective learning. The course was thoughtfully laid out and created deepened interest in the field. The concept of writing a literature review is very interesting, and I'm inclined to believe that it would be more valuable than a standard paper, though it is hard to say, because they are not due to a later date. The special class on disasters was also very interesting. I would say in sum, the class worked best when focused on aspects of the field in which Professor Ilan Noy specialized.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
None
The professor. He brought broad working knowlegde, excitement and a good degree of encouragement. He was well organized, clear, and the class was split evenly between lectures and presenations.
Timing was the biggest issue in this class. The midterm came a couple weeks too late and pushed the literature review much later in the class, which created a bigger time crunch than necessary at the end of the semester.
