Paula definitely knows her class material. This experience sitting under her teaching has been most rewarding. Fortunately, we have the opportunity to learn from her extensive knowledge and perception. This semester has opened my eyes to a cultural view and how very important SWkers understand the implications towards intervention/treatment with clients. I feel I have received a 110% return and its been worth all of my time,energy, and money I have invested towards obtaining my MSW. Thank you very much Paula!

I really enjoyed having Dr. Morelli as an instructor for this class I will miss her next semester.

Dr Morelli is awesome. She understands what its like to be a student and does not pressure you into completing assignments. Awesome teacher Awesome person.

I took this course as an elective and found it enjoyable and educational. I would highly recommend this course as an elective, as most concentrations can benefit from at least a basic understanding of mental health issues. Paula is an excellent instructor and the classes were a good mix of lecture, activities, student presentations, and a field trip. Great class!

I believe that the class reinforced learning tools and elements of the foundation year in a more practical sense.

I think that if the course (this also goes for the other online courses too) had more face to face time and less online time most of my answers would have come out as "strongly agree" The online element to this class created a barrier to the more effective learning that could have happened. Considering that this year many PhD students have not been in school for a while and have been out getting actual work experience in the field; more interaction and discussion (among the cohort along with the professors) about their experiences and the relevancy to the classes would have been extremely beneficial to the learning environment. The cohort has many interesting and practical experiences past and current that are very relevant to the PhD objectives in a tangible way. More acknowledgement (from the program) of our experiences and the professors experiences would not only teach volumes but would also foster a more collaborative and supportive learning environment. Often times, I have not felt much support in the program which I think is largely due to the distance that online classes can create between professors and students but also among students.

I would have preferred to meet in class rather than on Laulima. I know that it's late and sometimes inconvenient to get to campus, but I think the benefits of being with fellow classmates and meeting in person outweighs those costs.

She has a lot of experience in this field. More examples of students' work or other works could have been provided to give a better understanding of the assignments for the class. Powerpoint is fine but going through it line by line only makes it boring. I thought I understood the instructor's expectations but the guidelines were not specific and clear to complete the paper. In future, she may want to stick to the timeline for each section of the assignment so that there is no rush towards the end of the semester.

This course may have been better if it had not moved so quickly to the on-line environment.

I learned alot with this class. Paula is a excellent teacher and I feel so lucky to have her for this class. I wish she was teaching next semester. She has to be one of my favorite teachers. She is very fair and open minded. She brought so much of her experience to the class which i love.

Dr. Morelli is a very knowledgeable and is very genuine when she teaches. She wants her students to learn and she implements assignments that help us to learn and do critical thinking. Students feel open to ask questions during class and she effectively explains her assignments so that we all have a clear understanding of what to do. It is unfortunate that she won't be teaching next semester, but I wish her luck in her future endeavors.

Thanks for the great learning opportunity and sharing ur personal stories as well as getting my peers to do the same ~ makes learning better for me. I will be sending extra prayes your way for your daughter, her family and of course her loving and caring parents! God is able!

Dr. Morelli is an excellent communicator. She created non-threatening, supportive atmosphere and always encourage us to share our thoughts. Thanks to this I was able to learn a lot not only from her but also my colleagues. She is very knowledgeable about the subject and taught us in interesting way. Her lecture on motivational interviewing was especially helpful, which I'm utilizing in practicum setting.

This course has taught me so much. It has taught me my strengths and weaknesses as a social worker. Mostly importantly it has taught me about self processig and refection. I like how the course was structure and would like to have more small groups of reflection which would have made it more easier to reflect and discuss in a bigger group. I love the discussions we had about our thoughts and opinions. The learning environment in class was safe and non-judgemental. I was able to share my thoughts and feelings without hestitating. Its too bad that Professor Morelli is taking a Sabatical because I would have enjoyed the continuation of the self reflection and process into a full year.

A wonderful, interesting class with a committed teacher. I suggest less emphasis on the DSM-one assignment rather than 3.

Hands down, the best professor on campus. No biases in my body!!!

Learning circle and time for reflection is helpful but not for an entire semester. I do not believe all of the course objectives were covered and often felt that class time was more focused on discussing our experiences, which is beneficial, but not when other learning opportunities are neglected. The assignments helped us identify beliefs and consider our personal learning process but a lot of important topics were ignored and/or overlooked because so much time was spent "sharing."

Great class, encouraging us to explore the mental health field while allowing us individualized learning by not forcing group work on us. Stimulating, relavent material and asignments. Great teacher... knowledgable, engaging, encouraging, and creative. What was very helpful was the various treatment discussion. When each student covered different topics, it shed light to different populations and mental health services.

I understand that we are incoporating technology in the classroom, such as using laptops and cellphone applications to take notes or what not. However, it is distracting and disrespectful to use while someone is presenting (guest or student). I also felt the large class size wasn't effective to learning or provided opportunities to comfortably share personal thoughts.

I really enjoyed having Paula as an instructor. She has so much knowledge and is a very personable individual.

I would've liked to have exlpored various therapies and learned more about how to utilize the DSM IV TR. I would have also liked to explore more cultural based practices. I feel the last 3 classes could've been utilized more efficiently; perhaps learned something new, had an inspirational guest speaker or had time alloted for portfolio work instead of portfolio sharing.

Paula is one of the best instructors that I have had a course with throughout the MSW program!

Instead of having each student present their portfolios, experiences, etc. the class time could have been utilized by having the instructor lecture about class subjects: materials that would enhance our learning to complete homework assignments and projects. Syllabus was not followed. More emphasis on the DSM-IV. Case studies or going over the DSM-IV materials/disorders were not discussed during this semester.

Would have liked to have a more clinical focus

Paula Morelli exemplifies teaching excellence. She not only shares her extensive knowledge of social work practice from her many years of experience, but encourages her students to share their many varied experiences to promote a mutual learning environment that includes herself. Paula practices what she preaches. This enhances the social work values and ethics that we are taught and are to abide by in our own social work practice. In other words, Paula is a great role model. Paula genuinely cares about her students and encourages pursuit of excellence in our chosen paths. She is especially adept at focusing on our strengths but not afraid to point out areas that need work so as to provide a balanced perspective. I feel empowered as a person and a budding social worker having had Paula as an instructor.

I rated this course as average because the main focus of the course changed several weeks into the course. However, changing the focus of the course was extremely helpful and should have been done years ago. However, it would have been nice if the course had started out that way. I don't believe that people who do not do anything in a group project should not be allowed to obtain the same grade as the rest of the group. That would be completely unfair.

I would have wanted more case studies (client case scenarios) and use them to practice diagnosis using DSM-IV. Also, more challenge and specific case studies in discuussing major mental health diagnosis w/ commonly used psycho-tropic medications. Other than that, excellent class!!

I enjoyed and look forward to next semester to learn from Paula. She is a wonderful teacher and mentor.

Great- really shows care and concern for students, allows self reflection and personal growth, and truly cares about our clinical skills.

Paula is extremely knowledgeable about the topic of mental health. Some aspects of the class were never quite clear to me, and were never completely satisfactorily explained (motivational interviewing, DSM stuff). For some reason discussion was like pulling teeth and was very awkward. I like how you can really see Paula's heart for the work, and how that work is informed by her extremely academic side.

I really like your teaching style and you are a great model for future social workers. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Please re-think the group projects. Too many and too long.

Great class overall...i really enjoy the cultural emphasis on comprehensive assessment and treatment approaches. MAHALO PAULA!!!

Excellent course. I learned alot about myself and mental health issues that effect many people.

Great course, really grateful for the clinical skill practice- always want more of that. I enjoy this coursework and wish we could go into more detail with other clinical interventions and dsm diagnosis.

I recommend that we practice diagnosing by using the DSM IV. I would like to take home practice cases and then go over them the next week to practice diagnosing skills (not necessarily a graded homework) and to fully learn about the different disorders in the DSM IV. PBL sessions should be utilized during class sessions to help students to have a better understanding of the materials and to also enhance learning.

topics should be explored in more detail. assignments are helpful but more might be gained if there were similar exercises and discussion during class time.

For all the talk about "indiginization" of the school, I'm not seeing much evidence of this in the mental health concentration class. This is an opportunity to present alternative modes of thought with mental health, and I would love to see this more than having the primary focus being on western models (DSM, MI).

This was a pretty good course, but it could be amped up a bit. Less group presentations, please!! THANK YOU!!

she is an wonderful professor, very excellent gardian and a kind mother, she has all the qualities that required for teaching gradudate students across culture and background. Qualitative research is her area of expertise, so she left no stone unturned. I respect her professionalism.

Great! She was very willing to explain concepts and give feedback. I liked the fact that she was flexible with the syllabus and made changes according to how the class was progressing.

Positive. I would have liked to hear more lecture about the topic because the instructor knows a lot about qualitative research and we can learn much from her. More lecture on the topic would have led to more structured discussion that would provided more learning opportunities for the class, rather than talking so much about our projects. Sometimes the class got off topic and we needed more redirection, though that was less of an issue when we were on Elluminate. I appreciated her efforts to hear out class concerns and provide support. Instructor was very knowledgable and patient with students to help us learn Elluminate. She really made the extra effort to understand it in order to make it easier for the students.

I believe and would like to do more qualitative research work for my dissertaion, therefore I am always optimist about the course and methods. It is not only because of the topic but also due to the professors' teaching style, I think the course was one of the most interesting for me. I enjoyed all the sessions and assignments, I still have more interest on this and I will learn that when I will do the actual research.

Excellent class! I learned a lot in the class and it was very applicable to my research goals.

It is a necessary course, but somewhat challenging. Perhaps I would have gotten more out of the class if it was offered the second semester of the program when students have more a handle on things. There was a lot of reading, perhaps it would be better to have a primary reading topic that we would focus on for lecture and discussion and the secondary additional readings for each class. Using Elluminate was excellent. Some students seem reluctant to use it because they lack a good internet connection so have problems, but it is really the future of teaching so it benefits us to know how to use these types of technologies and get used to change in the classroom.
