13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
I think one of this major strengths of this instructor is that she treats students in a way that students want to be treated. She is kind, fair and does a great job explaining the course material. Her personality is also very friendly and she makes the class a fun experience, instead of a boring one. Her knowledge on the subject is great, I as a student never thought she wasn't able to explain the material. Considering she is originally from Japan her English is very good and easy to understand.
very organized and always on schedule.
She gives exams by chapters and the final exam is no different. The content that we learned throughout the course is fairly implemented into tests for us students.
She knows the subject matter very well. All lectures are direct and straight-to-the-point. Material is presented in a way that is easy to comprehend and understand. Good use of technology in the classroom. Has a very good connection with her students. She is also very nice and understanding.
She knew the subject area well.
She knows her material very well and knows how to teach it to us students. She said her english isn't good but I couldn't even tell. She spoke with a lot of enthusiasm and I had a great time learning from her. Her daily homework assignments really helped me learn Japanese better.
Knowing the japanese language
Very kind and understanding sensei, knows the language very well an can answer any questions that are asked
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I would suggest that this instructor send out her class aides to monitor people taking quizzes that arrive a little late for classes. While I will not name names I hear that some may have been getting help from electronic devices (cellphones) for some of them. It makes it frustrating for people like me that arrive on time and do poorly on quizzes by being on time and honest. For orals I would suggest giving students an option to do them alone or with a partner. For time reasons maybe reduce the amount of lines to 7 or 8 instead of 10. While my partner was writing the scripts getting him to meet to finish scripts or getting the scripts in time to study them were impossible. Being tied to a partner that is very picky made it difficult to finish the scripts in time.
i felt that the material we had to learn in the time frame allowed was a bit harsh.
Professor Shibakawa should have more office hours for student meetings and have a better planning with her course lectures and schedule due to some long chapters reduced to one day.
Maybe the vocabulary tests should be before we start the chapter. Sometimes we start the chapter but i do not understand the vocabulary words, so i have to keep flipping back in the book to look up words.
Clearer instructions, more informative learning, and better preparation for tests.
I think overall she is a very great teacher but needs to be more strict about assignments and exams. It's not fair how some students clearly stated they did not email her in advance about missing an exam and they still get to take it. She can be too lenient at times.
less oral group tests
Start teaching 200 level courses!
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
This instructor shows great concern for her students, which is rare in my experience at KCC. When many in the class struggles with an assignment she goes over the assignment in class so that students can get a better understanding of the material. She also encourages all of her students to do their best before tests and quizzes. When my quiz scores suffered she showed concern trying to motivate me to study better. One of the few instructors that actually care about their whether they pass or fail their class. For some of the lessons in the book that is used in all Japanese classes at KCC I think the book does a lousy job. This instructor provides handouts to her students that help clarify the lessons in the book that at least for me were not clear helping us understand.
she helped us individually with any problems or questions we had.
She allows students to make up for the exams, but she should definitely have a outside student conference about their grades and tutoring office hours as well for some students that need help.
I've seen her talk with other students about their grades and what they need/should do to improve them. She also is able to work around the students' schedule without problems. Even late students had a chance to take the quizzes. That was much appreciated.
She helped out students during class.
She helps out every student and calls on everyone to make people participate. I like that about Sensei because it helps us all learn.
always willing to help
Through verbal interaction, as well as emails and such.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Coming from student that has struggled with learning Japanese all my life and this course being my most difficult class. Without a doubt I would recommend other students to take this class with this instructor. I would tell them you will not find a more kind and fair instructor that cares about her students. She doesn't make you feel stupid when you are unable to answer her questions or make mistakes.
yes. he teaching style is friendly to students and helps you to learn easier.
Yes, as long as she fixes the problems that I've addressed in the previous questions.
Yes, i would recommend her highly. Very fun and interesting class. She always gets things done. Passing is as simple as listening to her and studying.
yes.she covers material well.
Yes, she knows the subject well, since she is from Japan. However, the class is a bit difficult and English is not her first language.
I would definitely recommend Mayumi Sensei if you are serious about learning Japanese because she is one of the best japanese teachers out there.
yes, good japanese teacher that cares about her students
Yes! She's an awesome teacher and good fun all around. I've enjoye both of her 101 and 102 classes!
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Although I did very poorly in this class and it was my most difficult class, this instructor has been one of my favorites. Even when I know I will bomb the quiz because I had a stressful speech to do in another class I would still attend because I respect this instructor.
i've learned a lot in her class. everyone had the ability to excel in her class.
You are a good teacher until some problems are fixed.
Best class I've had throughout my time at KCC. I may not have done the best, but I enjoyed it. If I were to move on in Japanese I would look for her again.
She is a very kind teacher.
Keep up what you do! Thank you for taking the extra steps in making sure I understand the material daily.
good job
She's really funny and very understanding
18. Other comments:
I really hope this instructor gets more classes that she teaches including this class. I will be looking in the future for other classes this instructor is teaching and I will seriously consider it. I have done poorly in this class and if she was teaching it next semester I would consider taking it from her again. Thanks again sensei for your passion and I enjoyed this class despite my struggles with foreign languages. I have learned more in these last 2 semesters then I have in many years growing up with Japanese classes.
she is a very fair teacher.
