13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?

Learned about many important historical sites on this Island. Acquired many new skills, reading maps, understanding use of land and more But I was not happy with religious chants, prayer circles and spiritual games that were constantly displayed in class and on group functions. Great teacher but many students in class did not like all the chants to God'

I never thought that I would ever enjoy learning geography because it seemed so hard, but you made it fun and simple to learn and enjoy.... Mahalo nui

I really enjoyed going on our class-required Huaka'i(s). Attending them allowed me to learn about the places and cultural/environmental backgrounds that much more. They were interactive and also allowed students to work together and get to know eachother in positive ways. The GeoStory project we had to write was very enjoyable as well! I got to do research on something related to the hawaiian islands that i was interested in- and could be creative.

The huaka'i were very fun, enjoyed them. And i appreciate that Drew allowed us to pick the day that would be best for us. I enjoyed not just sitting in class for the entire time, but getting up and doing activities that required movement. The project were fun. I liked learning about different places.

Projects, field trips, powerpoints.

Geoprojects and huakai were fun and relatable for me.

I liked that he required us to go on Huaka'i to see how the in class material relates directly to what is outside of the classroom and how we are affected by the earths changing features.

I enjoyed the variety of methods used to learn about different subjects throughout the course, like going outside to observe the clouds, or making a human chain of the Hawaiian islands, and even introducing us to the hei and learning an important chant. The projects weren't intimidating and were actually fun, along with the Olelo No'eau that we shared with the class, which sort of relieved a lot of the students because of the topic of their Olelo No'eau. And of course, the (2) huaka'i(s) that we needed to participate in for a large percentage of our grades were probably the most pleasurable part of the course.

I enojoyed going on the Huaka'i; for me, that was the best part of this class!

Huaka'i very informative and hands on. In-class activities gave the students the opportunity to interact with each other. Geo-essays are writing pieces to enhance the knowledge of a given area. Over-all enjoyed the learning experience.

I really like the trips we went on for this class. This class helped open my eyes to the environment around me.

The best part of the course were the huaka'i (excursions). It was really great to get involved with the community and learn more about the place we live. I also liked the fact that the projects were so varied.

It was fun. We went on huakai's. Had minimal work!.

Drew had vast knowledge of his field of study! he made learning very interesting and fun! I looked forward to going to class everyday!

I like how our class had huakai'i to diffrent spots on the Island. I also liked Drews possitive energy in class.

There was a fair amount of hands on work and a fair amount of note taking.

I enjoyed the many inter-active in class assignments we had and especially the trip to the UH Library Project. Drew is an amazing Professor that provides us with an encouraging environment with many positive feedback to his students. He has the ability to "ENGAGE" his students within minutes of arriving to class and everyone is eager to respond, reflect and participate in class discussions. He is a very fair teacher who also cares about his students by always providing time in class and during business hours to assist us. He is extremely knowlegable about course topic and very organized. He is always well prepared for class and arrives on time. He never appears "stressed out" like most professors are at the end of each semester and is very consistant as to brining Geography to life though his lectures, Power point, class/group projects and class Huaka'i's. He is very well prepared for each Huaka'i and clearly communicates student rules and expectations and ensures the safety and well being of all his students by making sure we bring the appropriate items (lunch, water, clothing, shoes) to each Huaka'i. He works long hours in addition to his weekly class schedule and choses to spend that time with us by taking us around the Big Island to learn about our environment and our native land. He is amazing respect for our Hawaiian Culture and not only teaches us about the Hawaiian Geography, but lives it by his own lifestyle and compassion for people. He is truly a clear example of what a professor/lecuturer/teacher should look like and I am pleased as well as blessed to have been a part of his class and as a Geography student here at Hawai'i Community College. I would like to nominate him for Professor of the Year 2012-2013, should you hold such a prestigious award! He is the best :). Respectfully submitted with much Aloha to Drew Kapp!

The Huaka'is where awesome some of the most fun I have had in any class.

It was interesting and a lot of fun. I enjoyed our huaka'is.

The projects were really cool and group activities were really cool too because you never had the same person more then three times.

I like the geoessay, geostory, and geoscopeassignments because we (the student) got the opportunity to show what we learned in class and put our self and/or experience(s) in each assignment.

I LOVED this course. The huaka'i's were the bomb! I learned so much about my home island.

I really enjoyed the huaka'i that were made available for us to go on. Through these huaka'i I was more than able to gain a first hand experience in actually putting the material learned into a much clearer perspective to where I was able to understand what exactly it is I'm supposed to be learning

I really enjoyed the course this semester. Drew was very thorough with his on-line lectures and contexts. The experiential activities were very much enjoyable, especially because I was able to go to places not many could go. I will always cherish what I have learned from him and others in the class and from the field trips.

i liked our discussions that we had every week. the projects were fun and didn't really make me stress. i liked the huaka'i i went on as well. plus drew was very accommodating to my needs.

The required projects provided the opportunity to sum-up the material I've learned.

I love the field trips and the group interaction where great.

I enjoyed everything about this class. I found the lectures to be fascinating along with the imagery. I loved the Huakai experiences especially interacting with fellow classmates and professor Kapp. I found the Olelo Noeau provers to be inspirational.

Huaka'i were amazing learning and spiritual experiences! I have never had a professor on this campus with the knowledge, passion and love for what they teach! Truly a standard that all professors should strive for!

I especially liked how the information was presented and the optional music selections were great. This class made me mindful of where I live and my environment. The most rewarding part of this class were the huaka'i and meeting several of my classmates in person. I am most thankful that this class made me step out of my comfort zone to post my thoughts and share my opinions. Drew encouraged supportive comments, which always made posting on the discussion board, a positive experience.

Drew has an amazing way in which he approaches the course material and giving guidance in allowing learners to be comfortable as many of us are at different levels of learning and that helps to bring out or discover our potential, this is huge...and the respect and appreciation reflects strongly when allowing us to "tune in" to our natural world. I highly recommend this class.

14. Any suggestions to improve this course?

My beliefs are strong for the separation and church and education/state. Separation of church and education/state is good for all involved.If the class is not a religious class, I do not want prayers in the classroom or group events. This allows churches, and other religious entities, the freedom to worship as they choose. It ensures (or is supposed to ensure) that the government/education will remain neutral in matters of religious faith, neither showing preference nor intolerance toward a particular religious belief. This concept is what has allowed religion to flourish in the United States. It is this concept that has been emulated around the world by nations that have had similar issues with government-sponsored religion. Perhaps most interestingly, it is a lack of religious freedom that the religious right (and most everyone else) despises about Islamic nations, yet it is what they seem to be striving toward in the United States. I for one am thankful that our founding fathers had had enough of government-mandated religion and decided to make their new nation one where all would be free to believe, or not, in whatever religion they felt was true. This is one of our country's foundational rights and the desire to end it should not be praised or taken lightly. I am sure none of us wants to live in a country where the government dictates which religion is the correct one - although that would make for an interesting debate.

I wouldn't change anything

Drew, i think you have been running this course very well and professional- i would only suggest to make it longer (time/class wise).

Less hawaiian studies based and more science based. More homework based on what is to be on assesments. More strict attendance policies, have other classes that are more strict and late/absent is not as big an issue.

Lectures were scatter-brained and hard to follow. The pictures, though I'm sure helped other people learn, were ineffective and a complete distraction from my learning.

More field trips

There should be more classes that provide this type of enrichment and interaction with classmates and the environment.

This course could improve by having assignments due at a set time instead of at sunset because the sunsets at many different times.

None. I'd only have a few suggestions for students considering this course. 1. Keep an open mind. There are going to be topics that are emotionally charged, but everyone has their own opinion and views. Just treat those with the same respect you'd like to be shown. 2. Don't wait until the last minute to finish up any work...Laulima may go down, your electricity goes out, your computer wigs out, you get sick...yeah, life happens. Post early, save frequently and keep Drew informed of what's going on.

Thank you for a great class and semester! Keep doing what you do, people/students learn a lot from what you taught in the class.

After taking extensive notes and printing and highliting power points I felt less thatn prepared when the assesment reviews came out. Personally would have retained more with more homework assignments and less out of the box classwork. Assesments seemed difficult due to lack of familiarity with Hawaiian language and previous local geography knowledge. Alot of material to take in with no homework practice. Memorization of geographic features from photos seemd less relevant than placement on a map. Trying to relate english terms to hawaiian seemed backwards since it is not a Hawaiian studies class. Relating hawaiian to english would have helped more in my case. Very uncomfortable with chanting in class and on field trips. Seemed more like practicing ritual than information about local cuture. I wouldnt have to go to a catholic church and pray in order to learn what christians believe.

really enjoyed class!! the learning experience was unquie and i reccomend this course should be taken by everyone attending this college. I find that it is important to know of the island you live on and you plan to explore on.

I definitely learned a lot in this class and it inspired me to learn more about the Hawaiian culture. I'm now sort of obsessed with trying to learn the original Hawaiian names of certain place names to preserve the culture by using the language. I also have many conversations with others I know about the interesting things I learned in class, and it gave me a new love and respect for the island I live on, for which there had been almost none there before. (:

Kumu Kapp is a great teacher and a great man, he was able to get me excited about a subject I never really cared for. This class helped me find a new appreciation for the beauty and power of the Hawaiian Islands.

This was a really great course, and I learned a lot. The atmosphere that Drew creates in the classroom really fosters learning. It made me want to go to class. The assignments, projects, and excursions were so varied and really rounded out the course.

The excursions really gave me a greater sense of involvement in my community! Drews involvment in the Hawaiian community was amazing! One of the best teachers I have ever had!!!

I like how drew was always willing to help his students. I also liked that I could just see him anytime if I needed anything.

Drew was very helpful and made EVERY topic fun and entertaining so I was always interested. What I enjoyed the most was the class discussions, lectures, and especially the service trips. Also the knowledge I gained from this class was very useful outside of the classroom environment and made me more aware of issues that I once never heard or thought of.

In our online class, Drew required us students to write a post on each region of the world. Doing this required us to research the region and then write the information in our own words. I learned a lot by doing these kinds of assignments. Also, the special projects and assessments required a lot of research and study and by doing these things, the information was more firmly planted in my mind. The huaka'i's were very enjoyable and I liked that we had to go to at least two of them. In this way, we in the online class could meet one another and put a face to the name. This class has increased my hunger to learn more about the world.

I really enjoyed going on the huaka'i and enjoyed the variety of ways we posted our discussion,for example using our imagination and going on a virtual tour of europe. Drew is very creative and made learning online fun!

this was a fun class. I enjoyed the reading and learning about all the different places in the world. Each week how the assignment was very creative and fun.

I love the activities (Hua'kai); it's the first time that I met my online instructor. The places we were able to go, due to this class and Drew was Gorgeous. I am very thankful to have gone to this places.

The things that I liked about this course was the interaction that he had created with us, the assignments and projects that really made us look at how well we could do research pertaining to a specific area. Loved it when there were exercises that were done outside of class and the many different ways of how to read a map. Some of us have never read a map before, but with the help of Drew, he encouraged us to try our best. That showed that he cared about what he was teaching us which is a good thing.

Overall, this course opened your knowledge, peaked your interests, and gave you as the student a greater understanding.

what i liked about this course was he was able to intwine all cultural practices . the activities were really good and the projects i loved writing a non fiction story it really made me express myself through writing which i love . the assignments wasnt a problem and if i did have a problem then i would see him after class or before depending .

I enjoyed everything about the course, Drew you are an awesome Professor and teacher. I am so glad that I took his class.

went on field trips, library assignment, got to creatively express our artistic side and learn about many topics that were thoroughly explained. Professor was kind and humorous and had everyone participating together in hands on experiences and learning themes.

I liked how interactive he was. I also liked how personal he made the content. He made the semester so that i could connect to what we were learning and that made it easier to learn and understand.

It allowed me to understand our islands. Field trips was about learning that particular geographic area. Loved everything about this class!!

I absolutely enjoyed being in this class. Drew's methods of teaching allows for students to succeed in class. I also liked how prepared he was throughout the semester utilizing the Laulima system and email communication to keep me updated with assignments and class announcements. Being in this class has inspired me to continue school and learn more about geography.

The Power points supplemented his lecturer very well. The Huakais were enjoyable and educational. The online assessments really displayed the knowledge that you were gaining from his teachings.

Learning about Hawaii!!!

Projects and assignments were not over the top. He gave us study guides which helped tremendously. We were able to choose from a variety of different excursions which best suited us and helped to inform us about our island. I enjoyed the Geo-story and Geo-scape which were both made from our own knowledge.

I liked the way Drew taught the class. It was a very comfortable atmosphere and it helped me learn better. Everyone was treated equally and there was a lot of class participation.

The Huakai was very helpful and learned a lot; with drews style of teaching.

i liked our geoprojects those were actually kinda of fun even though they were papers. i loved the mandatory huaka'i. and the lectures were so much fun.

I really enjoyed the huaka'i, because it was nice to experience Hawai'i in such a personal way. I also enjoyed the map activities.

I liked everything about this class, and I especially liked going on the Huaka'i. It was a wonderful experience.

I enjoyed the narrative powerpoint presentations, the excursions & work we did such as restoration work, etc. The class discussions were helpful for us to learn as a team.

The Huaka`i helped me to get to know the teacher, which I feel motivated me to do better/good in this class. Plus, the Huaka`i trips were fun and I learned a lot of things that I wouldn't be able to learn anywhere else.

even though this was an online class, we had to participate with three excursions which made a big impact in my learning.

Not sure if it's do-able however, having the huaka`i for the week be about the area we are studying in our course work. I know it would be difficult but it would help to coagulate the material and the meaning.

I enjoyed the Huaka'i's that was prepared for us as well as the online work the was provided for us. They were every educating.

One thing I appreciated was that almost no two assignments/class discussions were the same. It always seemed like interesting new formats that more asked your opinion about a subject instead of just regurgitating it, that was refreshing.

I felt the excursions really helped me better understand the concepts. Drew is a spectacular teacher and has great power points with so much helpful information. He makes learning geography fun and easier.

The field trips. Because this course is an online class, creating field trips allowed many of the online classmates to interact with each other and learn new, meaningful information.

I liked that we knew exactly when the assignments/discussions were going to be opened at the beginning of the week and exactly when it would close at the end of the week.

The hands on activities were great, i loved the field trips.

i liked how we had many options of how to do our assignments and a few were difficult but most were pretty much common sense if you read and watched the power points.

Drew Kapp's power point lectures were well thought out, and executed with excellent, thought provoking information, and amazing pictures. Supplemental materials such as documentary films, and music from the various regions and cultures of the world gave me a perspective on the subject that I would not have been able to get from just reading a text book or listening to a lecture. The text book was also a great resource full of up to date information on world geography. Weekly class discussion topics were varied and interesting, it was never the same so as a student you had to be on your toes. The projects were fun and interesting and allowed us to take what we learned in class and go seek further knowledge and demonstrate that to the rest of the class. The exams were also well though out, not easy by any means, but not unreasonably difficult either. I suppose this is just a testament to Professor Kapp's ability to successfully convey the subject material to his students. Projects and exams were spread out evenly throughout the semester and I cannot express enough how much this has helped me to succeed as a student. The field trips were excellent as well, helping to provide contact and discussion between students who otherwise may never meet each other in person. The field trips also helped us as students to connect with the land and the people in our community, even other students from HawCC and UH Hilo. Excellent course, I highly recommend Drew Kapp as a teacher.

I enjoyed the Geoprojects and the Huaka'i (or field trips) that students were asked to participate in. I feel it gave me a better connection with others in my online class as well as allowed me to be more creative with learning the material.

I enjoy this class. I have learned so much. This class has opened a window for me to see the world in a much different way. I enjoy this course immensely. What makes a course enjoyable for me is when it opens my eyes, triggers an emotion, and connects all of it, so that I can see a bigger picture. I realize that I need to be aware of opportunities that can make a difference to the environment that I am apart of. Learning about other countries and the hardships that they face in this century, although I read about it in the news, it didn't connect for me until now. Most of my life I have seen Geography like a flat pane of glass all broken and disconnected. What I appreciate about this course is in how he was able to present the total package of the earth. I can see that it is literally cut into regions, but what I see is layers like an egg. At one time connected, complete, whole, perfect. Eventually the changes began, not the growing pains of evolution but the steady destruction of the surface. Each layer of the shell is no less important than what it holds inside. I got that by the way in which the instructor presented the course, the projects that I was given and rhythm of the course. I recommend this course for anyone who is going to any field and the reason is that you are able to find your own path in the vast choices like economics, environmental studies, politics, etc.

Huaka'i

The huaka'i (field trips) of the semester was really enjoyable, and provided a different view of learning about our land.

I enjoyed all the areas of this course. The field trips were very interesting and even though at first not something I really wanted to do became the high light of the course.

The Huakai was by far the most enjoyable activity I have done in college.

I really like how Drew made the class fun. All the assignments were well thought out and I enjoyed being able to use my imagination on the discussions rather than having traditional textbook questions. I also enjoyed the Geoprojects. They were alot of fun and were a great way to integrate what we learned into a creative thinking project.

I enjoy this course!! Drew did an awesome job!! The Huaka'i's (field trips) were inspirational. Group projects were helpful, fun, and learning was easier.

I really enjoyed the huakai

Drew was one of the most engaging instructors I've ever had. His energy level was always high as was his passion for teaching. I not only learned the subject matter, but began to understand how Geography encompasses many other subjects. His devotion to educating us about good land stewardship was inspirational. He also managed to make learning the subject matter fun.

i like the huakai field trip activities. there are many place we can choose to go. Also i like the class activities. we can learn many thing from class work.

I think the one thing I loved were the huaka'i trips. My trip to Hualalai was definitely an eyeopener. It was my first time there too, so it was a great experience. It was good to be able to use the information learned in the classroom and apply it outside in our own personal lives. For example, weather conditions and such.

I loved the Huakaiawith other classmates it was educational and fun. I absolutely LOVED the opportunity to do our quiz only in the comfort of our home without the anxiety of doing it in class.

I loved everything about this course. I frequently learned a lot. Drew Kapp is a wonderful teacher

I really enjoyed this class because Drew created a thoughtful lesson plan that took us out of the classroom on various huakaÊ»i which enables us to learn in a more productive hands-on way and encourages us to be more community minded by giving back in ways so important to the aina. I also appreciated the cultural sensitivity that is present at every class, it was very compatible to the Hawaiian Lifestyles program that I am in. Mahalo nui loa e Drew!

Listening to lectures was not boring as many often are. The way he speaks to the class keeps it entertaining and educational. The content shared is also interesting. Would love to take another class from Drew.

The geoprojects and huaka'i

i enjoyed the lectures.

I really enjoyed our weekend field trips. It was very informative of what is going on around our island and what we can do to Malama our Aina.

I like how Drew was so helpful and very knowledgeable about the 'aina. He was truly one if not the best teacherI have ever had.

I liked the powerpoints, especially because they were narrated by Drew. These made it easier to understand the content.

Drew Kapp does an amazing job at incorporating equal amounts of book work, class discussions, and hands-on experience. He is extremely helpful and allows for the students to not only learn from him, but from each other as well. If you want a teacher who genuinely cares about the students and their growth and development in their knowledge in Hawaiian Geography, Drew Kapp is your teacher!

loved the the huak'i trips although it is real challenging for a student that has a family and a job to make it to all three. i loved the trips but they were a sacrifice for me to go to.

I love that this online course was user friendly, Drew presented power points and spoke along with the power points making it feel like we were in his physical class. All online courses should use power point and speak along with the lesson. It was very helpful.

The thing I liked most about this course were the projects.

There really is nothing more that could be improved with this course. It was GREAT!!!!

Quizes were hard unless you had hawaiian classes before

when a students comes to him with problems that he and the student come up with a plan so that student doesnt fall behind and have to withdrawal from the class do to personal problems

My only complaint was that Mr. Kapp was too lenient with the disruptive students in the class. This was a problem that caused me great annoyance.

No, I love it just the way it is. I would absolutely repeat this course just for the fun of it :)

The only suggestion I would have is there were a few individuals in class that were consistently disruptive and made learning challenging. I would suggest those people be removed from the class since other methods, i.e. "contracts" didnt work at all.

Drew has to toughen up with disruptive students; I would suggest making the students that talked - almost constantly - in his class sit in separate areas of the classroom. Other than that, Drew Kapp is an excellent and devoted teacher.

I'm extremely sad this class is coming to an end. I wish I could repeat it so badly. I'll always keep in touch with Drew :)

One thing that made a huge difference for me in this class was to have had the opportunity to meet my teacher and class mates, even though the course was an online course. Perhaps online classes should meet at least once to do a weekend group work..... (class mates and teachers too!) :))

I enjoyed Drew Kapp geog 122 class. It was very informative, we had various class participation which was fun.I have endured a lot of knowledge by enrolling in this class. I'm looking forward to future classes with Drew Kapp as the instructor.

In my opinion, the online assessments were appropriate regarding content and difficulty. The huaka'i were engaging and encouraged students to contribute to various causes through volunteering.

Besides the fact that Drew is very enthusiastic towards his lessons, the activities were useful for learning and I enjoyed the field trip outside of class.

I loved this entire course! Drew Kapp is an excellent instructor, I liked learning in the classroom and on our field trips. The course was absolutely hands on. We worked in groups almost every class session and we worked with maps and eachother. I like the way that Drew lectures and interacts with the class. I also liked the geo-projects online and the assessments online too.

I really enjoyed the way Kumu Drew always was excited and passionate about what he taught. He has content mastery in the subject and was very creative in the way he would teach us in each and every class. It was never a dull moment. Kumu Drew has a gift of making learning fun. I especially enjoyed the huaka'i to Mauna a Wakea and only wish I was able to hike all the way with the rest of my group. The projects were also a lot of fun and I have learned so much more about the islands and how Geography has to do with a lot of other things in our environment.

Class was really fun. Drew's class was actually the highlight for me this semester.

I feel that Drew successfully taught Western subject matter in such a way that it is accessible to local people who may have otherwise had a difficult time learning Geography. Drew's sensitivity to local issues and attitudes, his enthusiasm for the subject matter and his excellent use of visuals during lectures created a healthy and vibrant class atmosphere that was very apparent even though this is an online class. The huaka'i were excellent and exciting opportunities to see parts of the island that may not always be open to the general public and helped to create a sense of responsibility for the islands we live on.

everything about this class was amazing, wonderful, enlightening, perfect!

My favorite part of everything was when we got to do outside of class expeditions. It was wonderful to be able to meet our class mates and learning in that style allowed for what we learned to actually stick with me.

In this course I really enjoyed the Geo-projects as well as the group discussions. The Geo-projects were a really great way to learn the information discussed in each Unit. Also, the fact that we were all given the choice of what topics we wanted to research was a great way to further our own education in the topics of our greatest interest. As for the group discussions, Drew Kapp really put a great effort into making each topic really interesting and I learned a lot from my classmates!

I enjoyed this course in it's entirety. The assignments were fun and I really was able to learn from interacting with my classmates, not only from Drew. I especially loved the huaka'i required of us. I wish I could continue attending them!!! Taking this course has opened my eyes to so much more & has given me a new perspective of my environment. Seriously got me thinking about changing my major...

The structured Monday lectures and involvement Drew put in. Also, the 3 Field Trips was very appropriate & great!

I really liked the interactiveness of the course. As part of the class work the student was able to present their learning and understanding as they developed and worked in a variety of different ways (essay, creative expression, discussion topics, assessments.) This gave the student the opportunity to be evaluated in many ways. The class was a well rounded learning experience. The Huaka'i (fieldtrips/service learning projects) were an awesome and a very important part of the learning adventure. This gave online student to opportunity to meet face-to-face. They also connected directly with the course topic. These places are very special and were carefully selected by the teacher.

For the hawaiian names of places that we have to identify on mostly blank maps: I suggest a little more practice spelling those names and pronouncing them in class and drawing them on maps before the test, we did do that but to practice it more would be helpful. Honestly I think this course is excellent and I cannot see where any improvements are needed. Why fix something that's not broken?

not much more that could be done to make it more informative. a good idea would be to give an entire week to finish course assignments, that would be especially helpful for people who work full time jobs and do online courses.

Maybe the exams could have been a little easier, they were really hard and took all of the time alotted to complete.

I think there should be some sort of assignments included through the course to 1) allow for make up if a discussion is missed and 2) to make the class more engaging. An online format is really hard to want to be a part of if the class is nothing more than lectures and discussions...this was how it was for me anyway. In a classroom you can relate to people around you and the teacher and get face to face learning but with the online course I think if there was a way to introduce assignments that forced memorization and creativity it would stick with people better.

This was hands down the best on-line hybrid course that I have taken over the longevity of my current course work in the UH system! The class was very well organized and the progression of learning was appropriate for the topic. The students were required to interact with each other within a specific time frame online, in addition to face to face class field trips/ service learning projects (huaka'i). The integration, sensitivity and respect for the "host" Hawaiian culture was a very positive part of this class. I would highly recommend this class, the format and the teacher. I have earned so much in this course work and have been able to create friendship bonds with other classmates. Mahalo for a great experience!

Drew Kapp's style of teaching is unusual, he uses humor, and other techniques to engulf the class in knowledge of the subject taught. I really enjoyed him as a teacher and the subject too. The activities, projects, and assignments were knowledgeable.

Loved the huaka'i, there should be more

Geo projects and assesments were fun and challenging at the same time. Instructor has alot of knowledge and teaching style is laid back and fun. The students attending school here in Hawaii respond to that style. Drew did a great job, I would take another class he taught.

What I liked about this course was the huaka'i, which is a field trip to a certain place. I learned many thnigs and even went to places where I never went before. I also liked the activities because we got to work in groups and that helped us to get to know one another and also to cooperate with others.

Drew makes learning fun and interesting. I have learned so much from Drew. What I really enjoyed was working in groups which Drew does a lot of. The reason for this is that you get to see things from other peoples point of view. Another thing I enjoyed was the field trip to Volcano. I couldn't find a sitter so I took my son with me. We both had such a nice time and the best thing about it is that it actually made me feel good knowing I was a part of something.

All projects, activities and assignments were helpful in committing information to memory. Creating study groups were the best help for me on quizzes. He gets us to answer information and I learned so much.

I enjoyed the group activities, there was always at least one activity seperate from note taking and lectures. Brownie pionts to Drew. Also lots of beautiful pictures.

I don't feel this class needs any improvement.

Drew is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. But sometimes in large classes, other vocal students are able to take over the discussion and take up valuable class time. After a few weeks, Drew gained better control of the class. There are so many great things in Drew's class. But he could improve only by having more control of the class and allow a little less freedom.

Small homework assignments, or daily top five questions make learning more accountable for myself. Re-reading notes and looking thru the Atlas is good but small worksheets can be fun and encourage a more comprehensive understanding. MAPS ON THE WALL or COOL POSTERS...

Drew Kapp is an awesome Instructor. He really knows his stuff and always has an answer to our questions. He has excellent pronunciation with Hawaiian words and names and when asked a question, I have never heard Drew say, "I don't know." I never liked Geography in High School and I thought taking this class was going to be a nightmare, but now I'm glad I took it because I have learned so much in such a short time. Drew comes to class every day in good spirits and with a positive attitude. Having a positive Instructor really makes a big difference. Another thing is that Drew is very easy to contact outside of class time when questions arise. He constantly reminds us that if we need help with anything to call. If we have any questions or concerns, Drew encourages us to call or email him and he always responds in a timely manner. This was my first online course and I was very nervous about taking an online course but Drew Kapp was a great instructor. I would say when dealing with online work though it is harder to work in groups. One project in particular was developing 5 well being concepts and it was difficult to communicate with other students and some did not respond back to messages. It should be an individual thing so it doesnt feel like that weeks worth of disscussions was a waste or a failure.

This was a great class. Since its online (hybird) style its harder to have more field trips, but keep that in mind..... More field trips, I have lived here all my life and never been to probably half or even more of what this island has to offer, and since you have the knowledge it would be great to share it, well for me i no im interested in learning where i come from.

If I could change anything I would like to spend more time learning about the environment and facts and different features or really anything related to geography, i felt that there was a great emphasis on Hawaiian culture and its people but it felt like everything else was left out. This class was very frustrating .

Overall I feel that this class would probably be much better as an in class then as a internet class. I wish the instructor could have intervened into some discussions to keep it on the right track. This was my first time taking an online class and also a Geography class for that matter. It turned out to be more than I could have hoped for. I really learned a lot through this course that I may not otherwise had an opportunity to learn. This class gave me a new definition of Geography. I never would have guessed Geography covered so many different things, not only landscape and terrain, but also culture and language, all of which centered on Hawai'i, which is of very great interest to me. I felt that there was a great deal of discussion and even the comments during out class trips were offensive. Some of the material was very one sided, I wish the could have been a balance. I felt that as a class it was very biased, some of the comments were derogatory towards others. I would have liked an instructor to step in and see that the class was very opinionated and passionate about the Hawaiian culture and maybe bring it back to the subject material so that everyone could enjoy the class.

i would make the test a little different. for someone that has not been on the island for long this was a really challenging class.

Mr. Kapp is a funny teacher, especially after a long day, and being the end of the day at 3 pm. it's great to have a professor that kicks your heels.

a book with the information he was teaching so we can have different source of information or even up to date book. when doing slide shows try to include everything that is being talked about. kinda difficult to write and follow. so when we write we have an idea of what was being talked about later reviewing the slides or notes.

Regarding the tests, the matching of place names with the apropriate letter could have been done better, especially when multiplied by multiple maps. Too much extra energy was put into ensuring the correct letter was selected with what was on the map.

I would not make it mandatory to go in 3 excursions because it is an online class.

I liked how Drew tauhgt this class. He understands that he too is learning and I think it helped him to not see questions and veiws from a students perspective yet he could still answer the questions when need be. I thought the field trips were interesting. Not sure how they had to do with the course material but they were fun and interesting.

I'd make it clear that, although this is an online class, early and active participation is a must.

Drew is another great instructor. He is a master in this Geography field. His group work, class assignments, and tests taught me a lot of the Hawaiian Islands. The field trips were very good even if they fell on a Saturday -- it was so worth going! Awesome job Drew!

Drew is a great instructor, he is personable and encourages the best out of everyone. It is apparent that he is passionate about his subject and eager to share his knowledge with all the students. He did an excellent job of weaving the culture of Hawaii into his geography lessons, enhancing the meaning of each subject. The Huaka'i(field trips) were great, we applied both our geography and cultural knowledge to each trip.

I think that the methods he used were great. They included the subjects he was touching upon and it matched with what the book had too.

He often moves to the side of the class room and I become to feel we are talking against the wall instead of him, than I feel bit cold in the class. Sometimes, I feel that he doesn't have respect to the students because he creates the world, We (teachers) and They (students). I still don't understand why he asked the students at the end of this semester again the introduction of every student (name and where from). In conclusion, he has bit disturbing behavior to students.

Drew cares for his students and he shows it. He is patient and easy going that helps the transition from high school to college and helps transition for non-traditioonal students like me. I really appreciate the things that he did, going into each community and seeking out resources for our class community projects. I enjoyed the instructor and his teaching methods. He is always ready to teach and makes going to class fun. I like how his class is dynamic and offers a variety of learning aids and styles. He is a good person and a great teacher. Thanks Drew.

I liked how he made us do group work and made sure to try and get to know people so that we all feel comfortable coming to class and all that. He was a great teacher! :)

I enjoyed the projects that were assigned. They enhanced my knowledge of the subject matter and the format encouraged creativity which made the experience pleasurable. Sharing the projects in small group settings was intimate and much more comfortable. It was more of an interactive process compared with doing class presentations. I believe I absorbed much more in these intimate settings related to the projects. The videos and music were also informative and added texture to the course material. I enjoyed this course and am enriched from having taken it.

Listening to the music in relevance to the pertaining geographic location we were discussing for the week.

The instructor had this vibe about him that made the class enjoyable. He had a sense of humor about examples in class that fostered my learning. The instructor is one of the best I have had. He makes learning the subject material interesting and fun. Without this teacher, I strongly believe that this class would be boring. I doubt that I would have retained the information if the class wasn't taught by Dr. Kapp.

I liked the way the class was set up, since it is an online class sometimes they get boring and after a while interest is lost. This class was different. Week after week we weren't doing the same type of discussions. I learned more than I could have imagined. I also enjoyed the projects, they weren't to hard, which is nice because then there's more time to have fun with it, they were definitely learning experiences.

I really liked listening to the powerpoints & doing the geoprojects.

How consistent the class was and how the teacher kept me interested in the course.

I really like the lectures and videos we needed to watch. Also I really like all the different types of music he made us listen too.

I really enjoyed doing the projects for this class. (for example: GeoScape, GeoIssue, and GeoElement) These projects allowed us to step out of the box and exprience other places out of the text book.

I was able to research material for assignments and prepare for tests at my own pace.

I enjoyed the the whole course. Professor Kapp made the class fun an interesting. I learned a lot from this course.

Dr. Kapp was very helpful and understanding. He deepened my understanding about various cultures and world view topics. Dr. Kapp had excellent presentations and course work planned throughout the semester.

What I like about the class is that it is an online class and that many of the discussion were interesting and that you can learn something from someone else.

I liked that the course was online. The timing was also great, having five days to submit weekly discussions and assignments. Even the time allowed for tests were reasonable.

I really liked learning about the different world regions and what makes each place unique. It was also interesting to learn about each place's different cultures and problems that they are currently facing. It was also interesting to learn that world regions are not only based on geographical aspects, but also political aspects as well.

I enjoyed the geoprojects because it allowed us to focus on what interested us the most and it was still a big percantage of our overall grade.

I disliked the anti-American perspective of the world. I think that not enough positive elements of America were presented and their positive influence in the world, but maybe its for a good reason.

I didn't like sometimes how he would explain things, but if you were to go and ask him about it later he could explain it to you well face to face.

I didn't like that we had to do a community service project that was based on the environment. I am currently studying abroad and it is really hard to find a community service project that is environment based because they are already so environmentally friendly. Everyone here recycles and you have to separate your trash and you have to keep everything nice and neat, so it is really hard to find a community service project that is based around the environment.

earlier time. By the afternoon everyone is kinda pooped.

Drew is a gift and natural teacher. It is exciting that he has a passion for what he does, and uses a variety of methods to get the class to learn.

i wouldn't change anything

The one thing I would consider is that there are a lot of students not familiar with the Hawaiian language, so your test should be stream lined a little better. Ex: on your first test you had a question about a poem which had little to do with geography as a science. I can appreciate these things, but it does take away memory space from students.

Hand out the test study guides sooner.

I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot therefor if I was teaching the class not would would be improved or changed because the subject was well taught. The teacher is very knowledgeable in the geography of hawaii which allows him to teach so well in this particular subject.

I would not like to see more presentations in this course about reports on different researches from students focusing on the geography of Hawaii. Other than that it was an awesome course and well prepared.

He gave lectures with a lot of enthusiasm, and was engaging because he's pretty humorous. he motivated students to participate, not only in class, but outside of class through excursions and service learning. Those experiences helped me to learn and understand more of Hawai'i's culture and history. He gave a lot in-class group exercises, and that helped to understand things better also, while getting to know fellow classmates and gaining their perspective on things. Getting into groups is kind of uncomfortable for me, but it helped.

Excursion was very interesting and meaningful.I really enjoyed it.

Drew was always helpful even outside of class, whether it was through email or office hours. He was always available to answer questions and gracious when it came to assignments. He is really passionate about Hawai'i, and it helps to make his students interested also. He offers a wide range of learning through excursions, lectures, in-class activities, and service learning. He is very encouraging, and it feels good to know that your teacher genuinely cares for your success. I appreciate how he takes time to write personal comments on our assignments and tests while grading them. It shows that he actually pays attention to what we turn in and has a genuine interest in what we are turning in as well... which motivated me to do future assignments confidently. I would recommend Drew to any student.

He has a deep concern for his students learning and success. He really cares about his students, makes class personal and fun. He even gave us our grade standing before finals week, so we could see how we're doing, and make adjustments in our studies if needed. Not too many teachers go that extra mile, so I really appreciated that. It also seems as if he knows/remembers all the students in class, and that's refreshing especially because I'm sure it's hard to do when you have over hundreds of students. He is also very helpful outside of class during office hours and email, and if you miss a class or are late, he has handouts to keep you up to date and informed.

he has a very inviting and encouraging attitude.

That he is very knowledgable about sacred places on the islands and he has knowledge about Hawai'i more in depth than just the basics. A lot of people do not know about the history of Hawai'i. It is very important for people to learn about Hawai'i more in depth.

His love for Hawai'i and teaching is clear and it reflects off to the students. I learned a lot, and had a blast doing so.
