8. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
Wish I could have learned more about hawaiian language but a lot was based on other islands of polynesia
I learned alot about the Hawaiian people and I thought this instructor was best suited for this subject because he taught it so everyone could learn like me. He taught about the native Hawaiians and where they originated from and how they were very skilled individuals which is so true
Nothing
A Greater understanding of the Hawaiian perspective. In the future I will become an engineer and I will think greater about the impact of my product to the community.
I learned more about the Hawaiian culture/ancestry and
The rich history of polynesian culture, the importance of family lineage and the connection to the land
I now have received a better understanding about a lot of the past Hawaiian histories that I knew about but never really looked into until now in this class. Also, I grew fond of the weekly discussion topics because it was always interesting to read everyone else's thoughts on the subject.
I learned many things about Hawaii that I never knew before. Hawaii is my home, has been for all of my life and will continue to be for the rest of my life, this class has opened my eyes to all that is around me.
I have a much better knowledge of the Hawaiian culture and of historical events in Hawaii.

I think from taking this course, I have a deeper understanding about native culture in the pacific. I have also gained new insight on why things are the way they are in Hawaii. This course added to my prior knowledge on Hawaii.
I think what I obtained from this course that will benefit me personally would have to be the critical thinking skills and being able to openly express your opinion. Often times in life you are going to be faced with a situation or dilemma and you are going have to think critically about what to do.
I honestly learned a lot from this course. I learned the importance of Hawaiian culture and tradition. I also learned the significance of their beliefs and their Kapuna.
I learned to communicate well and have a respectful discussion with others on a topic with gray areas. And even with disagreements, I learned how to be civil and respect their point of view while defending the merits of my own.
I learned a lot of things that happened in Hawaiian history. I learned about other types of history, but not about the place I was born in.

11. Other comments:
He barely responds to my messages. And the videos we have to watch have never worked for me which had caused me to get low grades on test because most fill in the blanks were based off the videos.
This teacher is great he helped when you needed it and anytime you emailed him he would respond very quickly. I loved his teaching methods they were clear and I was able to learn alot from this class because I had a great teacher
Discussion topics were posted late and there was a lot of material that needed to be covered. It was unclear what the professor wanted us to do for our final group project. A guideline would have been appreciated.
I felt that this Hawaiian Studies had a lot of reading than I expected and the exams are really difficult. To get an A you would definitely need to write down all the Hawaiian names you read and people that was mentioned because you don't know what questions you might get on the test. Since I am a conceptual learning, detailed facts on an exam is hard. Most of the readings are not current and it would be interesting to learn about what the Hawaiian perspective is now, instead of focusing on past perspectives. Discussion, which is the majority of Homework, had a lot of head nodding and not a lot well thought out comments. Thinking outside the box. Very hard and frustrating to comment. Teacher is very interested in the students learning and I would recommend this class to a Hawaiian studies major but not for someone who wants to get the general picture.
The course was very interesting and informative, but there was a strong emphasis on how europeans messed up every culture they encountered. I loved learning about the cultures of the pacific, but would have liked to focus more on their good points and no so much on how white people ruined all of them.
Mr. Laimana is a great teacher, however I don't think he understands the reasons why students choose to take online courses. Assignments were opened too close to due dates. Student like myself take online distance courses because time is an issue: we don't have it. Most of us work full-time and school, however unfortunate has to come second or third. Online courses should offer some type of flexability in submission. Many times the discussion board would not be opened to allow for submission, or we'd be given one or two days to post discussions. I have taken over twenty distance courses and the normal time allowed for discussion posts is about a week, not two or three days. Also, Mr. Laimana used many awesome videos, however there was always problems getting the videos to play. I understand that there are glitches, but we were not given extra time to view videos that we had problems viewing. Don't get me wrong, Mr. Laimana is a awesome teacher, a true asset, however a few adjustments need to be made.

the course was interesting. The instructor was easy to talk with and contact. He was on task with responses to questions.
This course was very interesting. I feel that I learned a lot from this course. The only difficulty I had with the course is the exams, and only a specific part. The fill in the blank questions are exceptionally harder than the true/false and multiple choice. Some of the details asked for questions are also very obscure, considering we read a lot about many cultures that seem similar throughout the pacific. This was one of those classes that I put a lot of effort in. All in all, I must say I learned a lot.
He is an excellent professor who is willing to help all times. He allows you to state your opinion and most importantly he cares about his student.
Thank you Kumu.
I overall liked this class very much. I learned a lot on Hawaiian history and the thoughts of my classmates.

When presenting slideshows try to slow down a little since he switches between slides with plenty of information pretty fast.
im very happy with his teaching style and what he did to get the material across to us
Loved his teaching methods
I have no suggestions. He is a great teacher.

The only thing that could be improved is the explanation of assignments. A little more clarity on what is required of the art project and reaction papers would have made things easier. Other than that the course was great.
This is the best course, no improvements!

Professor Laimana did an excellent job teaching the course and I have no suggestions for him in improving the course. I would say that he should keep the course exactly the same, alot of learning came out of his course and it strengthen me as a Hawaiian.
he doesn't need any!
16. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Kumu Laimana was amazing. I haven't felt this motivated and inspired to come to class when I can, for a while. He's very passionate and knowledgeable on the Hawaiian culture and history--I was very impressed. I don't think there's anything major he needs to improve on at all. He's the only professor I've had yet that I feel completely comfortable approaching and talking to about the course material, etc. He is one who lives what he teaches, which is in itself extremely inspirational. I'd recommend Kumu Laimana to any student who wants an interesting and engaging class that will teach him/her a lot about Hawaiian culture and the economy. Kumu Laimana's strategies of teaching were extremely effective. We played class games that were very relevant and kept students engaged and participating. The activities and discussions we had helped me remember the material.
He is a good professor and helps students really think about not only the material but the real world applications and ideas in society.
it was a pleasure having him as a professor and i will highly recommended him as a professor to other
I believe he is a great teacher.
I really like this teacher. He makes learning Hawaiian studies interesting and he is very approachable. He is one of my favorite teachers so far.
He is a great teacher that constantly involves the students into thinking about the subject and relating it to their own lives and other subjects, not just Hawaiian. I have learned very valuable information in this class and I don't think I could ever forget it.
John Laimana knows what he is talking about when he is lecturing and is always able to draw the student's attention with the concept of each lesson. He also shows his interest in each discussion and it's nice to see a teacher so passionate about Hawaiian Studies.
Great Kumu. Helped me to learn much of the basic knowledge of Pacific Island studies. Also the class was laid back, but still very informative. The required readings were interesting as well.
He is the best kumu ever, hands down.
Professor Laimana is an AWESOME teacher. The teacher is very organized, clear, and interacts with the class to get the students thinking. The readings, written papers helped me to think critically and helped promote awareness. Working in groups, gave us a learning experience that reflects upon the working environment in which we will be partnered or placed with people who we don't know to work with.
Great teacher. I learned a lot of things in this class beyond just the curriculum
a great teacher. Creative ways or making students see things.
great instructor. very hands on and interacts well with class with lectures, videos, readings, and discussions. demonstrates high interest in Hawaiian Studies which makes class more exciting and motivating for the students. would highly recommend this instructor.
John Laimana was a great professor, he made the subject more interesting and did a good job of engaging the students.
He is just Perfect and Easy-goin!!!!
Professor Laimana is an excellen instructor, he allowed us to critically analyze the materials that we read and watched. He is extremely knowledgable and passionate about what he teaches.

The syllabus maps out exactly what you'll be studying and reading and doing in every single session. Kumu Laimana stood by his schedule and syllabus, so it made the course go much more smoothly for me; I knew what we would be studying weeks in advance, so I had more than enough time to prepare. Excellent course.

I would recommend this class to anyone, i wish my whole ohana could have learned everything i have this semester!
THANK YOU Professor Laimana for a great semester!
Very professional, lovable personality, I wan't to hear what he had to say. His teaching style is a fun but educating.
Hawaiian Studies is a very valuable course for knowledge of everyone living in Hawaii and other pacific islands, both native and non-native. The information, history, and culture is important for everyone to know in which respect for all aspects of daily living is gained. I am glad that this is a requirement and feel better for having taken it.

Less old movies
Updating the gradebook throughout the semester so students know where they are at.
I really enjoyed this course and I don't think it needs any improvements. I learned a lot and I was challenged to think critically about what I had learned in the course. Overall I really enjoyed my time in the class.
I actually enjoyed the laid back style of teaching. Laimana's "talk story" method of class discussion was different and less stressful than speaking in other classes.
Nothing.
Nothing, his course is perfectly fine.
I loved the class! :)
-In readings, the points of interest should be indicated. preferably with a question set before the reading is due. -If possible, you should find ways to have students watch videos on their own time. Maybe not all of the videos, but the least relevant ones could be watched as homework and questions be asked during class. -More critical thinking/ class discussions should be done. Those were very thought-provoking and captivating - and inspire true learning.

None. I hated doing, but appreciated afterward the "Let's Make A Deal" activity-- I learned a valuable lesson from it.
Should have the final in group.
no changes!
I enjoyed viewing movies throughout the semester. I feel that I had a deeper understanding of some of the events that had occurred in the Pacific. I would like for there to be more movies incorporated into the syllabus.
Nothing, He rocked!
I really liked the course and I think there should not be a major change.
none
My only suggestions to better this course would be to have more rules and regulations in the distribution of group points during activities. It is hard to document or record how much each group earned per day; however, I feel that developing a system would prevent questioning from the students. Also, this particular class requires an immense amount of reading. It would be helpful to suggest to future students to divide up the readings among the group from the beginning, so they are not easily discouraged from the large amount of reading.
I have no suggestions for improving the course.
everything was fine with me. i liked his methods!

I strongly enjoyed this course and it taught me a lot about Hawai'i and it's people. I would suggest possibly having a little more guest presentations.

excellent. Talked about life stuff, not just curriculum. Very appreciated.
excellent instructor who knows what he's talking about
that he's a great teacher who perfectly combines pedagogy with fun.
He was a very kind and understanding professor. I felt that he cared for every student and I worked hard to make us succeed in the course.
He is a great instructor with a unique approach to teaching. He is enthusiastic about his topics and keeps the material interesting.
I liked how he taught the class. He involves everyone in class discussions and lectures. He makes the topics discussed in class interesting to learn and try to understand
Perfect. Taught me a lot and allowed me to think about things in a different way. Very open and easy to talk to.
that he is a wonderful man, who cares about his students. I appreciated the fact that he connected with us and created a positive environment to work in.
He is an awesome and fun teacher.
Kumu was very nice and helpful. His class was very fun and entertaining, and I learned a lot from a different perspective.
a wonderful teacher. He is very caring, respectful, and understanding of his students. Easy to talk to. knowledgeable. He also has a personal connection with the coursework which shows in his persona and teaching methods.
I enjoyed the class and it was fun being able to do things in groups.
Great, fun, and fair
the best teacher for the class. I enjoyed it and learned a lot. He is very objective but gives valid arguments on different topics.
that he is a good professor with alot of knowledge for this course
EXCELLENT
I could not ask for a better teacher to teach Hawaiian Studies. I can tell how much he loves his job as a professor for Hawaiian studies. There was never a day where I found Hawaiian studies to be a bore because of how Kumu presented the topics. The readings kept me in check and his expectations were very clear. He is very organized and his syllabus explained what I need to prepare for and what needs o be done for the class to be a productive one. My understanding of the Hawaiian culture has been broaden so much. I came in not knowing much about the Hawaiian culture and I'm leaving with a lot more knowledge through the guidance and knowledge of Kumu Laimana. He is an awesome professor. Wouldn't mind taking another hawaiian studies class if he was the professor.
He is a good teacher. He's fair and encourages teamwork.
Such a great teacher. He made the class so much fun but I also learned a lot as well. I would definitely recommend this teacher to all of my friends.
Kuma John was an inspiration in my life! Although he did not directly tell me what to feel or do, he has opened up my mind to new beginnings in my life. I strongly agree that students take his class!
John Laimana is a compassionate, and enthusiastic teacher that helped me to think critically about the topics discussed in class. John communicated effectively, and created a friendly atmopshere for his students. He encouraged students to voice their opinions and disregarded the idea of a 'right' or 'wrong' answer. I personally enjoyed having John Laimana as my professor this semester and I feel that I gained enough knowledge to share with my friends and family on the mainland.
Professor Laimana was a great teacher and I have already recommended his class to friends. I especially liked the way we worked in the same group over the semester, because it gave us both an extra responsibility to be prepared and also a support group.
John Laimana was an outstanding teacher. His class was very eye opening and insightful. I feel I have a greater understanding of the Hawaiian people and the hardships they had to endure. I believe Mr. Laimana's teaching style was extremely helpful in understanding and relating to these topics. Mr. Laimana is the best professor i have had at UH and his course was by far the most interesting. I would recommend Mr. Laimana to anyone who is considering taking this course.
Very passionate teacher
Very good teacher, knows what he's talking about. I really enjoyed his class.

I thought he did a great job with the course. It was a very eye-openning course and I'm glad I got him as my instructor.
He is a very good teacher and I would strongly recommend taking this course.
I enjoyed have Mr. John Laimana as my Hawaiian studies professor this semester. He is an easy- going person with a passion to teach. I most enjoyed his ability to speak of legends or story-telling. I find his personality and teaching style inspiring. Thank you.
John Laimana was an over all exceptional teacher. He taught the class in a interesting yet relevant way.
Very nice and enthusiastic about Hawaiian studies. He made it easier to learn about the things I wasn't interested in.
he is a very good teacher. He knew the subject well and I really learned a lot from him. I would recommend him to anyone who is interested in this class.
excellent teacher. easy to work with and highly fluent on the course
John is not only a great professor but a good hearted man. I could see he loved teaching and expressing his opinions (respectfully) and thoughts to the class. I always felt comfortable in class and interested in learning.
Really great, it was a fun class, assignments were very clear. I found the group tests to be helpful because it forced me to study in order to have a successful group.
He is a great teacher and i learned a lot from this class.

Good teacher.
He made it very inviting and easy to participate in the class
Great instructor! Very helpful and makes me interested in the course.
other students should take his Hawaiian studies course because he's a wonderful professor.
My suggestions: less in-class videos more class discussions (and debates!) less emphasis on specific dates more emphasis on cultural perspectives more emphasis on precontact Hawaiian mindset
I am not a Hawaiian Studies major, but I am a Native Hawaiian engineering student. He has helped me to become a critical thinker and has given me the ability to objectively look at Hawaiian history and issues.
It is a very interesting class and the teacher demonstrated very well as I have learned a lot about Hawaiian Culture and its people. Also I have found out that it has a lot in common with my own culture(BURMA).
Thank you for a great class!
Thank you! :) The course was my favorite course this semester...
Thanks for being a great teacher.

Overall a Great class that I enjoyed. I would highly recommend taking this course to anyone interested in expanding their knowledge.

Kumu John Laimana is a great teacher to have. If a friend were to ask what teacher they should take for Hawaiian Studies 107, I would mention Kumu John Laimana.
I love the point system, it was a great way to keep track. although it would be better if he made like a chart for us to keep track of our own points so we're on the same track with staying on task.
GREAT TEACHER!!!! Knows his history and current news of Hawaiian culture.
I like how the class was organized with group activities. The grading scale for the class makes a class that a lot of us have no idea about much easier to learn about. The exams are fairly graded and is a plus when it's in groups
I really enjoyed his method of teaching and im pretty sure that i can speak for the rest of the class. Excellent course! I learned a lot about Hawaiian culture and history.
i believe that he is a great teacher and really shows that he cares about his students by listening and working with us. no matter what our concern was, he tried his best to answer the question or assist us in reaching our goal.
John Laimana taught critical aspects on hawaiian culture well and helped my critical thinking skills to become more aware.
John was very knowledgeable and encouraging.
Professor Laimana has made this course extremely interesting to learn. He doesn't just lecture about the history of the Hawaii and its people, but he also does activities with the class to get us to understand the struggle the Hawaiians faced. He is a very good teacher and I would recommend him to my friends. The only thing I didn't like about his class was watching some of the videos he showed in class. I would have preferred if we did an activity instead.
The class definitely taught me a lot of information regarding the hawaiian culture and the effects of colonization. Although it got a bit boring doing the same things in class every day, I enjoyed the class overall.
Although there were a lot of readings that needed to be done, it was in general interestng to read and educational. Overall I enjoyed this class because it helped me to learn more of Hawaii's history, something everyone should learn more about.
Great course, I wish more instructors would talk about controversial actions more often like in this course. The course really helps to open your mind into other cultures and the problems they face in todays society.
I liked Laimana's approach to teaching, where it's about trying to get the students to have reactions, and discuss the material being presented and not just to measure how well they regurgitate some information. I felt he had a very approachable style in class and made the course enjoyable. Best part I liked about the class is the groups. It's hard to get a discussion going in class, but when in groups it's a little easier to talk about the material. You get to hear different perspectives and you become more comfortable working with your groupmates. If there's one thing I wish he'd work on is that sometimes we don't discuss certain readings. I understand there's a lot of material to go through in this course, but some of the time I felt the readings were 'optional'.I just like to feel there was a reason something was assigned and for some readings, the reason was not made clear.
-explained topics well in class using powerpoints -gave an ample amount of extra credit opportunities -showed videos that fit in with the units being learned -was a laid back/fun teacher -showed he was passionate about the curriculum being taught
I liked this course because the teacher was very interactive with the students and shared his knowledge and own experiences. The teacher was organized and came prepared each class.
Very easy class. Just a lot of reading! overall i liked it :) it was easier to understand the multicultural differences that we have here in Hawaii and how Hawaii's past history.
I enjoyed the course, it brought up a lot information I was not aware of and I recommend this course to all students. Mr. Laimana brings a lot of good ideas, which promotes critical thinking.
Mr. Laimana was a very good professor. When I asked him a question via email, he responded quickly, and in class he was always helpful as well.
Regarding Hawaiian and Pacific History, there are much more issues to the topic than I have previously realized. From this course I have been able to build a better understanding towards the social, political, and traditional views that have affected the present. I can honestly say that I will be able to have some view in respect to issues involving the pacific so that if I am given the opportunity to act, I will be able to do so towards the benefit of everyone.
I really appreciate how he presents the material as just facts instead of saying oh Europe and the U.S. ruined what we had.
Great professor!!!!
Kumu Laimana made the material interesting and fun to learn. This was a really enjoyable class.
Instructor Laimana is very interested in our individual education. Very effective course design, and interesting material.
Overall the course was very informative and interesting. The instructor not only taught the class but created a positive learning environment that helped me effectively learn. I enjoyed this course immensely.
Very interesting class, open and intellectually tolerant atmosphere
I really enjoyed this class and the perspective that kumu John shared with us. I would like him to teach more classes so I can take them from him. Mahalo nui.
HWST 107 with Kumu John Laimana was very informative and fun! There were many opportunities given in order to learn more and to work towards a much better grade. If I were to retake this course, there is no doubt in my mind that I would request this kumu for the job. Fantastic teacher and interesting class activities!
Kumu John is the BEST! He is really fun, understanding, and fair. He makes learning about Hawaii interesting and relateable. Just when you thought you couldn't possibly understand what the Hawaiians feel like to have their land taken and pretty much become a minority on their own home land, he makes you feel it deep inside and you just can't deny it.
he taught the course in a very balanced and open minded way. The course was fun and entertaining and was always fun to attend class. Professor laimana knew his course material and gave insight into contemporary hawaiian problems and its historic roots
I really enjoyed his class and i like his idea of the point system.
I loved this class because it was informative and it helped me learn alot about pacific cultures.
a very enjoyable teacher : ) easy to get along with and talk to... values the ideas and opinions of others. I would definitely recommend him to other students.
He was a good teacher who made points clear through exercises and videos.
Great Teacher, understanding and hardworking.

15. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Books should have been available for this course materials in the UH bookstore but other than that the course went very well.
N/A
The class was fun and interesting i'm not sure how to improve it.
None
Have one reading per day. Have more quizzes. Update the videoes and some articles. Have more activities (like the lo'i).
I really don't have anything to say that should make him change his teaching style
Well I understand that this is Hawaiian studies, but I do not agree with how a lot of the things we watched were bashing the united states.
Have more available office hours Try and get the class to be more open about their opinion. The class is very intimidating at first because there is so much information that goes against what people take Hawaii to be. I feel that the material is so one sided. It has the right to be so but it would be more encouraging to see some of the positive aspects of Hawaii becoming a state.
Some of the videos we watched seemed a bit unnecessary as well as many of them not working in their entirety or at all. I also felt like there were a lot of videos, especially towards the end of the semester, which gets really boring. I would rather have watched shorter segments and then had the professor talk about it.
NA
I have no suggestions. The course was run great and with no problems. It cannot be improved.
Biases and personal opinions may be shared, but should not be the actual material that students are expected to learn and be tested on. Many times during discussion this instructor shot down students' discussion responses on subjective issues (i.e. art), and taught that his own views (art that doesn't serve a purpose is "crap" without meaning, therefore all Western/contemporary art is inferior) were what intelligent students ought to think. This instructor also made remarks that showed prejudice against people of certain ethnicities/communities in his lectures to serve as examples.
The only thing that I could think of is if the instructor had better access to technological resources, the fact that the DVD player would freeze up or take a really long time to load. It hindered the learning experience for me.
reaction papers are a great way to earn points as well as learn more about the concept. i think in the future, there should be more papers required
Different way of taking roll. A lot of people just sign each other in when they do not come to class and end up getting credit for coming.
I think an overview of the movies written down would help because its hard to get all the information out of a movie
None.
Some nights the reading was a little too intense The syllabus was a little unclear.
I enjoyed taking this class so much.
Maybe more hands on things. Taking the tour around the lo'i was fun.
I really like the teaching method in place. Everything is open to interpretation, he makes you use your mind to think out of the box. I don't have any improvement exceptions.
A lot of the readings I was looking forward too were never made available on Laulima, I would still like to read them... perhaps this is a comment on the department... I enjoyed John's style with the exception of some of the true/false questions on the tests, I felt the correct answers to be forcing an opinion that I did not share, and I do not feel that it is the students responsibility to parrot the opinions of the University or any of its departments. I liked the map quizes but I felt that the relevance was not entirely there or that the connection of the map quizes to the course material was lacking. My only complaint about the course is that it is a little to heavy on the political end and subsequently leaves out a lot of culture. Also I think the group thing is a little strange... Groups should not be chosen randomly or assigned in such a manner, it felt more like random segregation, perhaps people could rotate everyday so that the group dynamics would be more interesting and people would have a chance to achieve new perspectives.
The course was very interesting already and very well taught.
I would like to have more feed back from the writing. As most of the writing are opinion, it would be constructive to have more counter arguments or supporting comments.
Not all course material listed on the syllabus was made available to the instructor, therefore it was not available to the students either.
none
Professor Laimana's teaching style and methods were simple to follow. He went according to his syllabus, and he always reminded his students when something is due, for instance, the Reaction Paper. I liked how he has daily quizzes as extra-credit points based on the readings. He also group his students, where they interacted and discussed about the reading(s). I liked it a lot because I opened up and became comfortable with my peers. Furthermore, he gives his students chances if he/she received an unsatisfactory grade for the map quizzes.
Allow more group tests for the midterms
This class was great. No changes are needed.
Organization could have been better such as having all the reading materials available.
Mabe more power pionts could be used.
None
Would love more outside projects or immediate context in our communities on O'ahu.
Maybe a little less reading and a little more lectures
I have no outstanding complaints or suggestions.
I honestly can't think of what he could have done better.
16. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
The instructor conveyed his message to the class very clearly and broke down the points to where every student can grasp the concept easily. He made the class/learning environment fun and it was easy to talk to him. I would definitely recommend other students to take his class. I had fun learning in his class and gained a better understanding of the course itself.
He is an amazing instructor, who is well educated on this topic.
Great class
Very intresting
Professor Laimanu was really a wonderful teacher, this course was filled with interaction and even a field trip down the taro patches. Professor Laimanu was always finding ways to make this class a great and fun class, he included videos, group discussions and activities, so the class wouldn't turn into a boring lecture everyday. He really did make this class enjoyable and at the same time I learned a lot of Hawaiian history. His exams and papers are very clear and he doesn't try to fail you like many other Professors I've seen, he actually would wants his students to pass and take away knowledge from his class. Overall i think Professor Laimanu is a wonderful teacher and if I had the chance I would like to take another class taught by him again.
Kumu John Laimana was a very good instructor. He knew his information and even shared more information on certain topics. He conducted many group discussions that helped with understanding the materials. I recommend other students to take Kumu John Laimana's class.
I really enjoyed him a lot. At first I thought it was going to be a hard class but in the end I enjoyed it and it was one of my favorite classes
Very good, i think i got more out of this class than i did all my other classed combined this semester. I don't want to name names, but i can think of a few professors at this institution who could learn a thing or two from Professor Laimana.
that Professor Laimana is a great professor. It is clear that he is very passionate about what he is teaching. When I have professors that want to be there to share their knowledge, it inclines me to want to learn from them more. He is especially knowledgeable about the subject, and really created class discussions that inclined us to find a deeper meaning from the text.
Professor Leimana was a great teacher! He was nice, funny, and helpful.
He does a lot better job in teaching than his brother Grant. =)
Very good. He seems to really know what he's talking about and is interested in the subject material which makes me receptive to learning.
He is very caring, helpful and passionate.
Laimana is a great teacher and always had me thinking about the course material. I always thought critically about the readings and videos and tried to connect them to my life and my family's history. He made this class very enjoyable.
Would be an excellent instructor if not for the two previously mentioned points.
very intelligent. Very well read in the History of Hawaiʻi during and after the overthrow. Maybe needs a better background ancient Hawaiʻi or Hawaiian words.
Wonderful! Recommend!
I enjoyed going to class, and i believe that this was my favorite class for the semester
I thought this class was great! Kumu focused a lot on us actually learning and being confortable with the material than trying to make the class difficult. He did his best to help us succeed and was very understanding. He graded fairly and genuinly cared about his students. Thanks to him I have a great respect for Hawaiian culture and way of life. I wish every teacher could be like Professor Laimana!
Very good. enjoyed the class.
Knowledgeable, friendly, interesting and easy to listen to
Gets students very interactive in class. Everyone is able to discover their opinions and thoughts while respecting other's as well. Overall the instructor kept the class in tact and doesn't make the class boring. It's always fun and there's always something new to learn.
He was awesome because he was very passionate about the topics that were covered in class and he also seemed to know a lot about the topics because he always answered questions really well. He was a great instructor because he taught us a lot but he was really laid back too which created a perfect environment for discussions/asking questions.
He is great!!
I like this class and my instructor a lot.
I love him! He made everything more fuck for us students and really knew what in Hawaiian history that would catch our interest whether we were native Hawaiians or not.
he is a great instructor. Very easy to talk to, kind and understanding. He always had the answer to our questions and took his teachings seriously and having fun at the same time. He is takes pride in his work and shows his knowledge of the material.
Our professor Laimana was an excellent teacher and I hope many other students get to experience what our class has. He really took care of us not only teaching us about the class, but about life overall.
hey was really nice to us and treated us with respect.
Outstanding. This is one of my favorite instructors by far!
John is a friendly and informed instructor, I am very happy that I switched into his class, he kept the students involved to the best of his ability and I liked attending the class and would recommend his section to a friend.
My instructor was one of the best I've had at UH and he made classes very enjoyable and interesting.
Excellence Instructor. I like how he always encourage student to speak up and state their opinion in matter that highly political and nuance. It help push student to think critically and question the conventional wisdom.
Positive. Would recommend him to others.
He is very knowledgable and can be funny.
Great prof. would definitely tell others to take the class from him.
Professor Laimana is a personable professor. He is very understanding and respects his students, especially if he/she was absent.
Very good
Excellent instructor, the best I've had at UH by far
This was my favorite course this semester. I had fun and feel like I really leanred the material well with Laimana's style. This was my only class I looked forward to coming to.
Best teacher I've ever had in college. Nice, cool, effective, and not intimidating. A++++ thanks Kumu!!!!!!!
I really enjoyed this class. I learned a lot and there was a lot of group interaction and discussion.
Really great guy. I loved the way he ran the class which was unique, because he had us work in groups during much of the class including some tests. This is very usefull especially now a days since we see such a lack of communication in our modern world.
great job
He is a very friendly, open-minded person. He always listens to his students and encourages everyone to get their opinions in during discussions.
He is passionate, very knowledgeable and inspiring when he doesn't even know he is.
I liked my instructer very much. he made the class interesting each time we went to class. The way his class was set up was very good, and planned out.
Knowledgeable, easy to talk to, accommadated students well, presented material in an organized way.
John Laimana is a quality instructor. He is very friendly and passionate about his field of study. He does not attempt to force his personal ideas or beliefs upon his students; rather, he challenges them to think critically about what they are learning, and not to simply accept everything that they read or hear, even if we are at the collegiate level of our education. This is an aspect of his teaching that I feel qualifies him as a great teacher. I would very highly recommend John to any student who plans to take HWST 107.
He did a great job. He got the class involved. There was enough homework to keep my mind on the subject throughout the semester. He gave us opportunities for extra credit. He had us get into groups for class discussions. It was a great learning experience for me.
