2. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Audrey is readily available to help all her students and willing to accommodate our schedules. If we don't understand certain areas she will go over the course material as needed. To me what is most valuable is that the professor values us as students, and genuinely cares about our success individually.

I think Audreys support was the biggest help for me getting through this semester, I honestly dont think I would've made it this far without her words of encourgment. This course I once questioned for its embarassing moments displayed during public speaking, instead I have found a new sense of confidence when delivering my message, and made a good friend while finding it. My hats off to you girl, we need more teachers like you!.

It taught me how to properly speak and the proper ways of communication

It was helpful in overcoming fears of public speaking.
We were directly taught what we needed to know. Instead of going by some rigid lesson plan with things that might be difficult to apply, we were given the information and tools we needed to apply our lessons. Furthermore, we were pressed to apply what we had learned in class. Not only did this help us during our presentations in class, but it also made us more aware of what is happening around us.
Getting used to speaking in public
It helped me be more comfortable with public speaking and how to create a presentation.
It really showed my how much we use non verbal skills in daily life and with this it strenghtened my improv skills. It was truly a joy taking this class.

Audrey gave very relevant lectures and found ways to make the concepts interesting and memorable. She was always willing to answer questions and spend time explaining things. She has a great sense of humor and made us all feel comfortable about speaking in front of the class.

The community we created in the classroom was immensely helpful in encouraging and supporting each other to succeed. Our professor's use of relatable examples and visualization helped to grasp concepts and information easily. The most valuable attribute though was her uplifting personality that both engaged me to learn more, and participate with a fun attitude.

Impromptus. Having to think on your feet and incorporating things we learned during lectures and in the text book help bring the points home. It also made it easier for me to have fun in class because impromptus are something everyone has to do and helps break the ice.

I didn't like the textbook at all. There was a lot of things that were strictly organizational or things that might be natural or common sense. Another thing is that, in terms of the exams, it might have been nice for the teacher to explain in the beginning of the class what we were taking notes on. She explained it later on, but at the beginning I was a bit confused. I also think the class was a bit short.

The writing assignments that were assigned were not helpful at all. I donʻt understand how they related to the information in the class.

Sometimes the technical terms seem arbitrary and I doubt I will retain them beyond the duration of the class, but that goes for basically any class.

25. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She provided the help that was needed for me personally as well as the rest of the students. Personally I had some family issues that I had to attend to and Audrey showed compassion and was willing to work with me even though I had issues going on. She "pushed" me to not give up and to just stay focused. It helped me immensely during that rough point in my life.
She was available outside of class and very caring for her students
By being a solid teacher, making sure all students are on the same page, and encouraging participation. She also effectively utilized both the e-mail and laulima website applications.

Always wants up to participate and when we dont she always asks whats the matter.
For someone with such a busy schedule, Audrey always made time for her students, always willing to stop and listen. Off the record I even caught her volunteering at my daughters school at a fun fair for the kids.
THE MATERIALS PROVIDED WERE EASY TO FOLLOW. ALLOWED US TO MAKE UP WITH EXTRA CREDITS.

She was always very helpful and positive in every situation.
She would take the time to put comments on our work and would provide other opportunities for us to succeed if were weren't doing so well in a certain area. She encouraged us to email her and to schedule office visits. It was very helpful to know she was there for us, and she responded to our emails almost immediately.
Talks to everyone individually, encourages in class talks, encourages off campus learning such as the UH Manoa debates to more about speech.
She was always willing to stay and talk to students or meet if we needed help on speeches or ideas.
She did by always staying late to answer questions, by never turning anyone away and telling us to just calm down everything will be okay.
Not sure, I've never needed to talk to her for individual problems.

Audrey was awesome; she really made an effort to get to know everyone in class and a little about them. She would always ask how we were and you can tell she meant it. If we needed help she was more than willing to spend time with individuals and answer questions. She also took time to make sure we all understood the topics and assignments.
she encouraged us to come study with her out of class and she would help us if needed with our speeches and powerpoints.
She was very in tune with the class and our level of struggle with certain tasks, she moved at a pace that she knew we could handle and understand, and if any of us were having a hard time with a particular topic, we would go over it until the whole class had an understanding. I think it showed when it was time to take our tests, I felt really prepared.

26. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I liked that she was always available, even though she wasn't on campus she was willing to come out of her way to meet with me if her office hours did not fit my schedule. I also liked how she conducted her class, it didnt feel boring and dragged out. She created a fun environment and made it speech easy to deal with in a comfortable way!
She had an effective was of teaching a well organized.

I feel like I know everyone in this class. Audrey has done a great job in creating a friendly environment where the students are comfortable with each other and can express themselves openly. This really helps while giving speeches because you feel more comfortable around your classmates than in other classes.

I thought the delivery of course material was delivered really well and easy to understand.
I loved her enthusiasm. Some teachers just teach the material and rush the students out, but you could tell that Audrey liked what she was doing. It seemed that both she and the class were having fun with the material. She was active in her teaching which is great versus going through the motions. As mentioned above though, it was a bit difficult to get an idea of what the test was going to be about before we reviewed for it. She repeated important things a lot, but I missed the connections between "this is important" and "this is going to be part of your exam."
I like that everyone must take a step out of their comfort zone in order to succeed.
I throughly enjoyed Audrey as my teacher and I can't wait to be her pupil again next semester! I never felt like I wasn't learning something new each time. She had a great opening personality that always made my day brighter. Great job!

Audrey taught the class with an up beat, lectures never boring, class is just overall interesting.
She found ways to make it interesting! Audrey shared fun facts and information with us and came up with fun class activities, like impromptu speeches. She uses great examples to help students understand the material. I really learned a lot and improved my public speaking skills. She made the course relevant; I never understood why speech was a graduation requirement, however, I am really glad I took her course!

There is nothing that I did'nt like about the way Audrey taught the course. She went over everything beautifully and made it understandable, easy to learn and above all she was a pure joy to have as an instructor. I would highly recommend her to all students who need this course.

Everything was explained clearly in the syllabus. There were no suprises. She also made a boring topic somewhat interesting to learn.
It was fun and educational and everyone was very open to speaking.
27. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Audrey is an awesome teacher who obviously loves her job and knows her subject. I appreciate her dedication and passion in teaching because it shows! It's amazing how she made a speech class less nerve-wrecking and more relaxed.

Great teacher in general. Easy to understand. A bit lenient in grading, but in a 151 course I suppose it should be that way.

She is a good teacher but I did not think the lectures were very helpful. It was hard to take notes because she was not clear, until the review, what was important information to know.

I think shes a wonderful teacher. Speech is a hard class to teach and there are many hard concepts to understand in order to do well in the class. I think that she did a wonderful job with meeting our class neeeds. For a teacher that is coming right out of school and has not been teaching for a while, I think that Audrey is on top of her game. (I honestly dont know any other way to say it.. because I was just suprised that with little experience teaching, she knew what she was doing and as good at it) Everyday she had a lesson plan and during powerpoints, she seemed very knowledgeable with what she was teaching. GO AUDREY!

YES! Most people are nervous and "scared shitless" to talk in front of others, groups, etc. But Audrey helps you to work pass those fears and encourages you in a comfortable way that it doesnt feel like your actually doing a speech in front of your peers...she makes it as though your just "talking story."

We went to go see this debate competition thingy, and I think it'd be pretty fun if Windward Community College put together its own debate team or Debate Forensics club. In fact, the clubs who competed were wicked. WCC was one of the only schools missing. It should get in there and participate in the big picture!

8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
I found the activities that Audrey had us do were helpful because it related to the concepts we learned in class. It was also enjoyable and everyone got to know each other better.
I've always been deathly afraid of impromptu speaking, and while I'm still afraid of it, I'm glad that the instructor made us do impromptus on a regular basis. Even if it's not fun, it gets a bit easier every time. Same goes for class participation--even though it must have been frustrating to get us to talk, it was good for us and me especially.
I felt the pointers on how to give a presentation was the most valuable and helpful
Being able to identify where my "fillers" were every time I gave a presentation or an impromptu during class. This was helpful because I learned to speak in a more fluent sense and I was able to organize my thoughts in a better fashion due to the impromptus that we had to do in class.
Speech principles
I found that the way we needed to work together at times helped me to further my team work abilities.
I found the section on self awareness and how understanding yourself is the key to being an effective communicator. I also thought that the impromptu speeches were very helpful in improving my communication.
The small class size was helpful because it allowed us to overcome our timidity a lot faster in order to improve our presentation skills.

It helped me realize benefits of public speaking, as well as the intelligence one conveys within his/herself as they speak.
9. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
I didn't think the writing assignments were very helpful.
Some of the terminology/vocabulary learned in this course seemed like statements of the obvious. An example would be "irresolvable conflict"--I felt that term was self-explanatory and didn't exactly need to be defined in the textbook.

I would have to say buying the book because from the lectures themselves, our instructor gave a very thorough presentation and covered all of the important parts of her lecture. So in that case, a book was not necessary to buy for the course, in my opinion.
Impromptus
Even though the surveys were used as a way to understand the course material and yourself I found them a little unnecessary.
The text book was the least helpful aspect of this class. I only used it to look up vocabulary words. The information was much easier to understand when it was presented in class or part of an in class activity.
The portion of our grade that required us to participate in research studies or complete surveys... we did not have a lot of options or opportunities.

She really enjoys what she's talking about and was very open with the class. She always gave us examples and would find a story to relate to whatever topic we were talking about, which made it easier for us to understand and remember.
She tried hard to get us all to participate whereas I've had teachers who would just let the loud people talk and dock the quiet people's points, which meant that less people participated unless they were desperate to raise their grades.
I find that her being open to us made us trust her more and that's what I found most valuable and helpful.
I found most valuable about Audrey Mendoza was the fact that she took the time to go over the material with the whole class. She made sure that everyone understood the lesson before moving on and also offered her office hours as a way of further learning the subject if we did not understand the subject right away. I also found most valuable her willingness to be open about expressing our ideas on communication, which was helpful in helping us speak up in front of a class and being more open to speak in a public setting.

Perhaps harsher penalties would motivate students to participate more.
I suggest adding more in-class based assignments such as more impromptus and group assignments because those helped me become more acquainted with everyone in the class. It also helped me to practice my presentation skills while learning to think on the spot, especially with impromptus.

Nothing, it was very good in my opinion.
The in class activities such as impromptus and article based presentations were very helpful in understanding the material presented in lecture. I would have liked to have done more of these activities since they allowed me to actually see the concepts in action rather than just reading about them. Audrey's hands on approach to this class was very helpful and it would be nice if the class have more of these activities.
The homework assignments did not appeal to me as "relevant" to the lectures.

The aspect of this course that I foundmost valuable was the section where we talked about relationships. This was because I was in a realtionship at the time and it helped me realize some of the things that I learned I could use to try and help my relationships.

I felt that a lot of the stuff from the book was useless because it was just about memorizing the text and it was not actually anything that could be applied in class. What I found most valuable about Audrey Mendoza was that she applied things to our lives. She did not just go through the text word for word and bore us to death, but instead she would give us real life examples of things we could relate to and this made it much easier and more interesting to learn about these communication principles.

Some of the writing assignments and tests were not very useful in my opinion. could be better ways to see what students have learned.
I thought the tardy/absence policy was a little too strict. The unexcused absences I can understand being firm about, but the marking people absent when late is a little much, I think. I know it's a personal responsibility to make sure you are in class on time but some people have classes or prior commitments before that have them running a little late.
I think she didn't mention useless word in this class. She tried to be a good model of speech and succeeded.
What I found least helpful was the preparation for the test. We had an in class review for one of the tests, but some of the questions on the tests asked for things that were very specific, so if you knew the general idea of a principle, but you did not know every exact detail, then you would not know get the answer right.
On a lot of my writing assignments I got 23/25 or on a test 8/10 with no explanation of why I got points off. The lack of feedback was not helpful with my papers or short answers.

I liked how we were all free to ask questions and discuss things in class.
I enjoyed the interactive nature of the class, as we were free to ask questions and some of the assignments that we worked on in class were as a group where we had to collaborate in order to get the task completed.
I really liked the relaxed environment of the class. It was easy to share opinions and ask questions; Audrey made it really comfortable and didn't embarrass anyone when they needed clarification about anything.
What I liked the most in this class was that Persuade part. It was a quite interesting chapter, since I'm not a person who can easily persuade someone.
The aspects of the course that I liked the best was just the fact that it was interesting. I liked the fact that I was not falling asleep in the class and that it was usually interesting to learn about. I was never checking the time like I do in all my other classes and I liked the fact that it seemed easy to learn.

I did not always enjoy some of the lectures, because of having to sit throughout the whole class period. Though I understand that sometimes we need to go though notes in a lecture format in order to get more information across.
I would've liked to have more speeches. I expected there to be more speaking involved not so much bookwork. It didn't really give me the confidence in speaking in front of people when I only did a few very short impromptus and one informative speech. Maybe we could've had speeches instead of homework assignments? That way we could incorporate the book and have the presenting time as well.
I had some difficulties when I dealt with first chapter. There were many technological words, I didn't like it.
The aspects of the course that I liked the least was the fact that we had to know information from the book. I think it would have been more effective to just learn everything in class and then really study those main points. I felt that it comes to a point of information overload when we learn material in class, and then we go and read a lot of stuff out of the book that we usually do not even retain.
The tests. The short answer section was hard to study for because there are so many lists in class and in the book It's hard to remember all of them but for me it is impossible to remember the ones from the book. A little more clarification for the material that will be on the test would be helpful.

Audrey is an incredible teacher and she is always prepared and knows her stuff! The book was easy to get through and read especially with Audrey's powerpoints which she always explained really well.
How to communicate effectively verbally and nonverbally to get your message across. Different methods to communicate and what people pay attention to when you are the speaker. I especially value all the characteristics a speaker must have in order to be a more effective speaker in order for his/her audience to understand the message being sent across.
Using your own examples, including comic strips and youtube videos, so we can easily understand what we're learning.
I found that the most valuable and helpful part about this course was a good teacher and great peers. Very easy to connect with and communicate with.

The scavenger hunt
Outline for speeches is worth too much points compared to the actual speech. Homework papers were graded harder than my English class papers. Impromptu speeches.

She was very enthusiastic, and seemed as if she enjoyed teaching us this topic.

Possibly make her questions more clear. Also, refrain from asking questions about things we just went over, no more than a minute ago. We're not sure whether you want us to just think or repeat what we see/hear.

Sometimes the timing of questions right after explaining something would make students not feel like answering them because they were almost rhetorical and easy. But getting interaction and participation from young adults is a hard thing that comes with time i think

It is hard to answer the questions she asks us when we are supposed to be taking notes on a power point. I end up ignoring her speaking so I can properly write down the class material. I think if she waited to ask questions after we read what was on the power point I would have learned more. I also think that she should teach more about communicating effectively and how we communicate with each other. I wish I learned more about speaking in public as well.

Be more fundamental. Her teaching method is set so strongly on in one manner. Try to mix things up a bit and do something different, go about your teaching methods a little different from time to time. Also have more time for speech and less time learning about things we already know.

Classroom disipline. Many disruptive students made it difficult to learn, I just wish she had booted them out. I pay a large sum of money to come to this school from out of state.

Absolutely nothing! I am sad that this course is coming to an end and I really am going to miss the comfortable yet educational atmosphere of her classroom! I truly enjoyed taking this course.
It's hard to say because Audrey was very consistent in her teaching and had a very fun and effective approach to our class but one thing that she can improve on is just giving more smaller assignments that can make a difference in our grade. I think that the bigger projects make it more difficult because it makes such a big impact on our grade and is harder to change. But she did provide a lot of extra credits which were really good.
Have more small speeches, like impromptus, so students can be more comfortable when talking in front of an audience and not get so nervous.
Maybe, get a class vote on what types of speeches they want to do. For example, a persuasive and demonstration speech rather then a debate and informative. Switch it up a bit.

The class was not what i expected.
Audrey is a really good teacher and I enjoy her class. She makes it fun and enjoyable. She is always available to help and even when i email her on the weekends, she gets back to me right away.

Audrey is a decent teacher, being that she hasn't been teaching very long. She has a lot to improve on but in time she has the characteristics of becoming a good teacher, whom everyone could take a liking to. Staying more on the speech subject will help, some classes seem to veer off to subjects related to speech but not of direct importance to actual public speech and communication.
I would recommend (and have recommended) Audrey to many of my peers! She is so approachable and was made to be a teacher!

Fun class. And I learned a lot. I love all the extra credit assignments.
Audrey came to class everyday with a great attitude and a big smile on her face, which made her class a great learning environment. She always tried to encourage all of us to become involved with class discussions. She was very knowledgable about the course and used great examples to help her explanations. She knows how to teach in a way to keep "college students" attention. I recommend her class to anyone else and I would take another course with her if I have the chance to.
