2. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
|
| It taught me how to properly speak and the proper ways of communication |
| It really showed my how much we use non verbal skills in daily life and with this it strenghtened my improv skills. It was truly a joy taking this class. |
| It helped me be more comfortable with public speaking and how to create a presentation. |
| HOW IT FEELS TO DO A PRESENTATION AND BE EVALUATED BY YOUR PEERS, TIMED AGAINST THE
CLOCK, DOING AN ANALYSIS TO SELF-EVALUATION |
| Knowledge and attitude of the instructor made learning about speaking interesting, and fun at the same time. |
| The speeches in front of an audience. |
| Audrey is readily available to help all her students and willing to accommodate our schedules. If we
don't understand certain areas she will go over the course material as needed.
To me what is most valuable is that the professor values us as students, and genuinely cares about
our success individually. |
| The techniques to use to help develope a speech. |
| We were directly taught what we needed to know. Instead of going by some rigid lesson plan with things that might be difficult to apply, we were given the information and tools we needed to apply our lessons. Furthermore, we were pressed to apply what we had learned in class. Not only did this help us during our presentations in class, but it also made us more aware of what is happening around us. |
| The most helpful thing was the preparing and presenting the actual speeches. There's nothing
better than learning from the actual experience. |
| It was helpful in overcoming fears of public speaking. |
| I think Audreys support was the biggest help for me getting through this semester, I honestly dont think I would've made it this far without her words of encourgment. This course I once questioned for its embarassing moments displayed during public speaking, instead I have found a new sense of confidence when delivering my message, and made a good friend while finding it. My hats off to you girl, we need more teachers like you!. |
| Getting used to speaking in public |
| Ease my stage freight. |
| the comfort in this classroom was great because it made giving speeches
easier |
| Speaking in front of an audience. |
| The group work and impromptu speeches |
| the teacher |
| It emphasized the importance not only of public speaking, but communication in general. |
| The community we created in the classroom was immensely helpful in encouraging and supporting
each other to succeed. Our professor's use of relatable examples and visualization helped to grasp
concepts and information easily. The most valuable attribute though was her uplifting personality
that both engaged me to learn more, and participate with a fun attitude. |
| Good professor |
| Impromptus. Having to think on your feet and incorporating things we learned during lectures and in the text book help bring the points home. It also made it easier for me to have fun in class because impromptus are something everyone has to do and helps break the ice. |
| Helped me overcome my fear of public speaking. |
| Conducting speeches and finding out what needs to be worked on. |
| she made going in front of the class and speaking fun instead of it being full of anxiety. she made me feel comfortable when speaking in front of the class. |
| giving speecehes in front of the class |
| very easy to talk too, didn't feel intimidated by her or my peers. |
| I feel like speeches and presentations are common in most classes. I feel I will be able to deliver better speeches |
| general practice giving speeches |
| The ability to increase my confidence when giving a speech in front of people and become a better speaker. |
| Audrey gave very relevant lectures and found ways to make the concepts interesting and memorable. She was always willing to answer questions and spend time explaining things. She has a great sense of humor and made us all feel comfortable about speaking in front of the class. |
| Learning techniques of how to present an informative and persuasive speech to an audience. |
| Audrey was open minded about the subject being taught. |
| Learning to open up and speak out. Making new friends and enjoy hearing my class share what
theyʻre passionate about. Teacher very helpful and easy going and very open. |
| the confidence i acquired in front of an unknown audience |
| I found the course to be helpful in that Speech is much more than simply speaking in public. |
| Learning how to give write speeches and give them in front of an audience successfully |
| Improving my public speaking, making me feel more confident. |
| Speech has been helpful in recognizing the difference between a persuasive and informative
speech. This course has taught me how to speak comfortably about topics that are drawn
randomly. |
| I learned a lot of helpful speech techniques and I became more confident in
giving public speeches. I also learned a lot of communication techniques to
use in my everday life as well. |
| It REALLY helps you get over the fear of speaking in front of others and shows you how you go about doing it. |
| It helped me be more confident on my public speaking |
| I found Ms. Mendoza's power points, lectures and extra credit opportunities to be most valuable.
Impromptus were always a huge help as well. Also, Ms. Mendoza uses visuals and even music, as an
attention getter for the class. It was a relevant way to understand what would be discussed. |
| I felt that doing the inprovs were most helpful because it made me feel more comfortable with
making speechs in front of the class |
| The process of developing and executing public speeches, which often consists of methods or procedures that one wouldn't consider on their own. |
| she made learning interesting in certain ways. |
| the speeches. through this class i have learned different ways to give and prepare a speech. |
| speaking in front of class. |
| This class helped me overcome my fear of speaking in front of a large group of people. |
|

3. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
|
| Nothing it was very helpful and Im glad I took it |
| I enjoyed all aspects of this whole class. |
| The writing assignments that were assigned were not helpful at all. I donʻt understand how they
related to the information in the class. |
| Extra credit! Should not be allowed. |
| Nothing. |
| Nothing, all was valuable. |
| I didn't like the textbook at all. There was a lot of things that were strictly organizational or things that might be natural or common sense. Another thing is that, in terms of the exams, it might have been nice for the teacher to explain in the beginning of the class what we were taking notes on. She explained it later on, but at the beginning I was a bit confused. I also think the class was a bit short. |
| Text book.... I learned more from the instructor without confusing myself with terms from the text. |
| I don't feel there was anything that wasn't helpful. |
| The stress, all those anxiety attacks before you go up in front of the class. Besides that, was well worth it. |
| It was a good course |
| sometimes the lectures would lose me |
| Nothing. |
| n/a |
| the text book |
| nothing, everything was valuable and helpful |
| I've already taken 3 speech classes in high school so there was really not much else to learn since it's an intro class. |
| ... That's a trick question, right? Everything was helpful. |
| Nothing. |
| N/A |
| the tests. |
| nothing really, everything was very helpful |
| i don't think attendence should be required. |
| Nothing. |
| Nothing... I learned a lot from her course. |
| NA |
| I found the textbook to be least valuable. |
| none, great teacher. |
| ...i don't think it's productive to learn how to give a speech from a text book... drop the text book, save us fifty bucks, just lecture more and give us more speeches. |
| Much of the class is based on each other's participation. Because of this, I found it distracting that so many students rarely showed up to class. |
| Everything in this class was valuable. |
| None |
| I thought everything in the course was pretty helpful. |
| nothing |
| none. |
| The textbook.... It did not help and was hard to undestand |
| Sometimes the technical terms seem arbitrary and I doubt I will retain them beyond the duration of the class, but that goes for basically any class. |
| writting the outlines. |
| noting it was a good course I'm glad i took it |
| paperwork. |
| Nothing at all. |

25. How did the instructor show concern for students?
|
| She taught the class really well and I understood her teachings |
| She did by always staying late to answer questions, by never turning anyone away and telling us to just calm down everything will be okay. |
| She was always willing to stay and talk to students or meet if we needed help on speeches or ideas. |
| THE MATERIALS PROVIDED WERE EASY TO FOLLOW. ALLOWED US TO MAKE UP WITH EXTRA CREDITS. |
| By being a solid teacher, making sure all students are on the same page, and encouraging participation. She also effectively utilized both the e-mail and laulima website applications. |
| Yes. She takestime to speak to you. |
| She provided the help that was needed for me personally as well as the rest of the students.
Personally I had some family issues that I had to attend to and Audrey showed compassion and was
willing to work with me even though I had issues going on. She "pushed" me to not give up and to
just stay focused. It helped me immensely during that rough point in my life. |
| Always wants up to participate and when we dont she always asks whats the matter. |
| She would take the time to put comments on our work and would provide other opportunities for us to succeed if were weren't doing so well in a certain area. She encouraged us to email her and to schedule office visits. It was very helpful to know she was there for us, and she responded to our emails almost immediately. |
| She always encourages students to ask questions and express their own ideas. She always offers
help and gives great advice. |
| She was always very helpful and positive in every situation. |
| For someone with such a busy schedule, Audrey always made time for her students, always willing to stop and listen. Off the record I even caught her volunteering at my daughters school at a fun fair for the kids. |
| Talks to everyone individually, encourages in class talks, encourages off campus learning such as the UH Manoa debates to more about speech. |
| She was available outside of class and very caring for her students |
| Absolutely, she was a very compassionate person. An awesome teacher. |
| Made it fun to talk during class |
| She always offered help in and out of class and was very encouraging throughout the entire semester. |
| she teaches to us in a way we can understand and adapts to do so effectively |
| She made herself readily available to help students outside of class. |
| She was very in tune with the class and our level of struggle with certain tasks, she moved at a pace
that she knew we could handle and understand, and if any of us were having a hard time with a
particular topic, we would go over it until the whole class had an understanding. I think it showed
when it was time to take our tests, I felt really prepared. |
| By making sure she gave everything needed to us to pass. |
| Not sure, I've never needed to talk to her for individual problems. |
| She's available for office hours and is willing to work something out. She was even willing to come on campus to help us when she didn't work the day. She lets us know what's expected of us and explains things thoroughly. |
| She made sure we knew what was going on. |
| Asking questions, being available to help. |
| she encouraged us to come study with her out of class and she would help us if needed with our speeches and powerpoints. |
| she answered our questions and helped us better understand things we didnt know. she sacrificed her time out of class to respond to emails or meet with us when we needed her. |
| was very understanding for various circumstances that arouse throughout this school semester. |
| She offers to help students outside of class. |
| answering questions |
| She gave us multiple opportunities for extra credit and made time for us in class as well as after class. |
| Audrey was awesome; she really made an effort to get to know everyone in class and a little about them. She would always ask how we were and you can tell she meant it. If we needed help she was more than willing to spend time with individuals and answer questions. She also took time to make sure we all understood the topics and assignments. |
| Always trying to get quiet students involved with class discussions. |
| She takes questions from her students and makes sure she's clear. |
| She always verbally tells the class that sheʻs here for anyone who needs help or have any concern. |
| she went to extra lengths to meet any extemporaneous situations i had and was both fair and lenient. |
| She always mentioned that if we were having problems to please come see her that she will help us with whatever our needs may be. She also offered plenty of extra credit. |
| Being available anytime if we had questions |
| Offered many opportunities for extra credit and would notify students when and where to receive
help. ex. speech lab |
| She helped me out with my speech thesis and pointed me in the right direction
for my topic. |
| She is always telling students how they can improve and encouraging them to come see her. |
| by clearly explaining her lecture then going back to re-exlpain if needed |
| She would open up many opportunities during and after class for students to ask questions. |
| She was aware where the class stood as far as already having background knowledge of the subject.
If we all didnt undestand soemthing, she understood and went back and gave us credit |
| Always being available for outside help, offering many chances to improve grades, always providing performance feedback. |
| always offered her services if we needed extra help |
| she helped me with a problem i was having during an assignment. |
| She showed concern by offering them make-ups. |
|
|
26. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
|
| NOthing it was great |
| I throughly enjoyed Audrey as my teacher and I can't wait to be her pupil again next semester! I never felt like I wasn't learning something new each time. She had a great opening personality that always made my day brighter. Great job! |
| I'll say her positive attitude and overall knowledge of speaking was impressive. |
| I liked the power pionts. |
| I liked that she was always available, even though she wasn't on campus she was willing to come out
of her way to meet with me if her office hours did not fit my schedule. I also liked how she
conducted her class, it didnt feel boring and dragged out. She created a fun environment and made
it speech easy to deal with in a comfortable way! |
| Loved how she encourages us to participate |
| I loved her enthusiasm. Some teachers just teach the material and rush the students out, but you could tell that Audrey liked what she was doing. It seemed that both she and the class were having fun with the material. She was active in her teaching which is great versus going through the motions. As mentioned above though, it was a bit difficult to get an idea of what the test was going to be about before we reviewed for it. She repeated important things a lot, but I missed the connections between "this is important" and "this is going to be part of your exam." |
| I feel like I know everyone in this class. Audrey has done a great job in creating a friendly
environment where the students are comfortable with each other and can express themselves
openly. This really helps while giving speeches because you feel more comfortable around your
classmates than in other classes. |
| I thought the delivery of course material was delivered really well and easy to understand. |
| I think the respect she gave everybody is what won our hearts. |
| I like that everyone must take a step out of their comfort zone in order to succeed. |
| She had an effective was of teaching a well organized. |
| she was a friendly person that made you feel comfortable |
| I liked her creativity |
| She allowed us to be interactive and that aided in learning the material! |
| i just like her style of teaching! |
| I liked the fact she made good use of examples to emphasize things. |
| I like that she kept the classroom environment upbeat and fun. It encouraged me to be brave
enough to make mistakes and learn from them in a constructive manner. |
| Audrey taught the class with an up beat, lectures never boring, class is just overall interesting. |
| She's really fun. I hate speaking in front of people but it was ok. |
| I loved her power points and the fact she posted them on Laulima which made it easier to access them. Her lectures are great, too. No dislikes here. |
| I liked the way she explained things and made it easier to understand. |
| Related to the audience well. |
| i liked that calss was fun and she always kept us engaged in group disscussions and class activities. |
| she put things in a better way that we would understand. she made classtime fun |
| i liked the way she taught and that the majority of her grading was through her speeches. i disliked that attendence was included. |
| She uses clear examples and explains the subject clearly |
| i liked the enthusiasm and strong knowledge of the subject |
| She made the class fun. |
| She found ways to make it interesting! Audrey shared fun facts and information with us and came up with fun class activities, like impromptu speeches. She uses great examples to help students understand the material. I really learned a lot and improved my public speaking skills. She made the course relevant; I never understood why speech was a graduation requirement, however, I am really glad I took her course! |
| I liked how we were evaluated by our classmates, it helped a lot. |
| I like that Audrey has a sense of humor. |
| I like that she is young and her teaching method is fresh and she brings to class a different
atmosphere which is a positive one. Sheʻs awesome. |
| nothing to dislike, audrey's a great, fun, vibrant teacher. she knows her subject, and shows a willingness to accommodate and truly educate the student. |
| I liked her method of teaching because it wasn't agressive. She focused on what needed to be learned. She also offered many extra credit opportunities. |
| There is nothing that I did'nt like about the way Audrey taught the course. She went over everything beautifully and made it understandable, easy to learn and above all she was a pure joy to have as an instructor. I would highly recommend her to all students who need this course. |
| It was fun and educational and everyone was very open to speaking. |
| She provided relevant and current information. Included entire class in small group situations. |
| Everything was explained clearly in the syllabus. There were no suprises.
She also made a boring topic somewhat interesting to learn. |
| her enthusiasm to be in the class with us and encouraging us to come out of our shell on public
speaking and what or how to improve it. |
| LIKES: Ms. Mendoza is very visual, and it made me understand clearly the topic that would be
discussed in class. She teaches with a very positive attitude. She would allow students to interact
with her while topics are being discussed. She uses a lot of examples to get to her main point. Her
method ans ways of teaching is very well equipped.
DISLIKES:none |
| i LIKED how approachable Audrey is. I felt comfortable asking her for help and letting her know that
I was lost and confused when I didnt understand something. She made her class interesting.
I disliked ....... |
| enthusiasm, well-organized, used laulima well, engaging |
| i liked she was vary thorough with assignments and material. |
| the class. |
| Everything. Especialy the presentations. |
|
|
27. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
|
| Awesome teacher |
| She is a good teacher but I did not think the lectures were very helpful. It was hard to take notes
because she was not clear, until the review, what was important information to know. |
| Great teacher, need more like her. |
| She is really nice and very organzed. |
| Audrey is an awesome teacher who obviously loves her job and knows her subject. I appreciate her
dedication and passion in teaching because it shows! It's amazing how she made a speech class less
nerve-wrecking and more relaxed. |
| Great teacher would recommend her to any one interested in taking a public speech class. |
| Great teacher in general. Easy to understand. A bit lenient in grading, but in a 151 course I suppose it should be that way. |
| She's a good teacher, prompt, informative, and organized. |
| I hope she stays here at Windward, the school needs teachers like her to keep up our good name. |
| Excellent Kumu |
| Awesome teacher :) |
| She rocks! |
| Thanks for a great semester |
| Easy to approach and provided great feedback. |
| Great professor, maybe take another class of hers. |
| WCC, keep her around! |
| Nothing. |

| Great teacher. I'm glad I took this course. |
| Sheʻs a great teacher, her class is fun and I learned a lot. Classes need to be fun to learn and not so
serious and boring. |
| i would love to hear her play music.
she is a respectable an intelligent person. She understands how crucial her role as a teacher is and is inspiring, both as an educator and a public speaker. |
| Audrey is an impeccable teacher who obviosly loves what she does. She was always enthusiastic and made learning to give speeches fun. |
| Great teacher.. |

| She was a good teacher. |
| Does a pretty good job. A little strict at times but I know it's good for us. |
| It was fun and not to stressful of a class |
| She is an amazing instructor! |
| I think shes a wonderful teacher. Speech is a hard class to teach and there are many hard concepts
to understand in order to do well in the class. I think that she did a wonderful job with meeting our
class neeeds. For a teacher that is coming right out of school and has not been teaching for a while,
I think that Audrey is on top of her game. (I honestly dont know any other way to say it.. because I
was just suprised that with little experience teaching, she knew what she was doing and as good at
it) Everyday she had a lesson plan and during powerpoints, she seemed very knowledgeable with
what she was teaching.
GO AUDREY! |
| turned a required, lower-division class that could have pandered to the absolute lowest common denominator into a class that was actually interesting. |
| she made giving speeches not so intimidating and made them fun. as well as the proses of research and building a speech. |

| We went to go see this debate competition thingy, and I think it'd be pretty fun if Windward Community College put together its own debate team or Debate Forensics club. In fact, the clubs who competed were wicked. WCC was one of the only schools missing. It should get in there and participate in the big picture! |

8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
|
| I found that the way we needed to work together at times helped me to further my team
work abilities. |
| I felt the pointers on how to give a presentation was the most valuable and helpful |
| I found the activities that Audrey had us do were helpful because it related to the concepts we
learned in class. It was also enjoyable and everyone got to know each other better. |
| The small class size was helpful because it allowed us to overcome our
timidity a lot faster in order to improve our presentation skills. |
| Speech principles |
| I found the section on self awareness and how understanding yourself is the key to being an effective communicator. I also thought that the impromptu speeches were very helpful in improving my communication. |
| Being able to identify where my "fillers" were every time I gave a presentation or an impromptu
during class. This was helpful because I learned to speak in a more fluent sense and I was able to
organize my thoughts in a better fashion due to the impromptus that we had to do in class. |
| She's really nice and helpful. |
| I've always been deathly afraid of impromptu speaking, and while I'm still afraid of it, I'm glad that the instructor made us do impromptus on a regular basis. Even if it's not fun, it gets a bit easier every time. Same goes for class participation--even though it must have been frustrating to get us to talk, it was good for us and me especially. |
| It helped me realize benefits of public speaking, as well as the intelligence one conveys within
his/herself as they speak. |
|
|
9. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
|
| Even though the surveys were used as a way to understand the course material and
yourself I found them a little unnecessary. |
| I didn't find anything least valuable and helpful about the course. |
| I didn't think the writing assignments were very helpful. |
| The portion of our grade that required us to participate in research studies
or complete surveys... we did not have a lot of options or opportunities. |
| Impromptus |
| The text book was the least helpful aspect of this class. I only used it to look up vocabulary words. The information was much easier to understand when it was presented in class or part of an in class activity. |
| I would have to say buying the book because from the lectures themselves, our instructor gave a
very thorough presentation and covered all of the important parts of her lecture. So in that case, a
book was not necessary to buy for the course, in my opinion. |
| Nothing really |
| Some of the terminology/vocabulary learned in this course seemed like statements of the obvious. An example would be "irresolvable conflict"--I felt that term was self-explanatory and didn't exactly need to be defined in the textbook. |
| I wish we would have done a lot more impromptu speeches. |

16. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| She was really fast on answering any questions that we had. Her teaching method made
learning the material interesting. |
| I find that her being open to us made us trust her more and that's what I found most valuable and helpful. |
| She really enjoys what she's talking about and was very open with the class. She always gave us
examples and would find a story to relate to whatever topic we were talking about, which made it
easier for us to understand and remember. |
| She used various exercises to help us with our communication skills. On top
of that, Audrey provided personal examples during lectures, which made the
terms and theories easily understandable. |
| Very friendly. Great speaker |
| Her willingness to help students when we did not understand concepts or ideas |
| I found most valuable about Audrey Mendoza was the fact that she took the time to go over the
material with the whole class. She made sure that everyone understood the lesson before moving on
and also offered her office hours as a way of further learning the subject if we did not understand
the subject right away. I also found most valuable her willingness to be open about expressing our
ideas on communication, which was helpful in helping us speak up in front of a class and being
more open to speak in a public setting. |
| Her helpfulness |
| She tried hard to get us all to participate whereas I've had teachers who would just let the loud people talk and dock the quiet people's points, which meant that less people participated unless they were desperate to raise their grades. |
| She always engaged the students. The class was a blast, and really beneficial. |
|
|
17. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| Nothing really applies to this field that I can think of. |
| Nothing. |
| Nothing, she was awesome. |
| Intimidating at first |
| Sometimes class materials were not posted to laulima when they needed to be. For example one of the homework assignments was not posted when it was assigned so I had to wait until it was posted before I could start the assignment. |
| I found nothing that was least valuable about Audrey Mendoza. |
| Nothing really |
| Sometimes I feel she is too kind and not critical enough in her evaluations of us. |
| Absolutely nothing. |

22. What changes would you make in the discussion sections?
|
| Nothing, it was very good in my opinion. |
| Nothing. |
| The homework assignments did not appeal to me as "relevant" to the lectures. |
| More time to discuss |
| The in class activities such as impromptus and article based presentations were very helpful in understanding the material presented in lecture. I would have liked to have done more of these activities since they allowed me to actually see the concepts in action rather than just reading about them. Audrey's hands on approach to this class was very helpful and it would be nice if the class have more of these activities. |
| I suggest adding more in-class based assignments such as more impromptus and group
assignments because those helped me become more acquainted with everyone in the class. It also
helped me to practice my presentation skills while learning to think on the spot, especially with
impromptus. |
| More material and a review sheet for tests |
| Perhaps harsher penalties would motivate students to participate more. |

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| The powerpoint slides regarding nonverbal and verbal messages. |
| By taking this course, I could get some valuable knowledge related to communication between person and person. And some words such as jamming were kind of useful for me. |
| Learning to speak up in class. |
| The aspects of the course that were most valuable were the actual public speaking parts of the course. It was good to practice a little bit by doing impromptus and things like that because it helped to make speaking in front of other people more comfortable. |
| The aspect of this course that I foundmost valuable was the section where we talked about relationships. This was because I was in a realtionship at the time and it helped me realize some of the things that I learned I could use to try and help my relationships. |
| i really enjoyed the impromtus...kept us on our toes
i also really liked the different activities such as the scavenger hunt |
| I like the content presented to us and how to relate it to our experiences. |
| impromptu speeches |
| The aspects I found most valuable were the sections about the types of conflict and different problem solving techniques. It was something I can relate to in my friendships and relationships in my life. |
| helped me become more self aware |
| Public Speaking |
| That she made us all participate during class so that we were comfortable talking in front of
eachother. |
| related to real life |
| The most valuable were learning how this subject can, and does, relate to my life. |
| The concept of communication as a whole. I learned there is alot more to
good communication than just verbal. |
| Powerpoints and class discussions, and impromptu speeches.
Class discussions were very engaging and at most times, interesting and
entertaining. For a class after lunch, I stay awake in this class :)
The impromptu speeches not only served as practices, but also helped to be
comfortable with your classmates. |
| The aspects of the course that were most valuable were the chapters on effective non verbal communication and group communication. |
| lecture |
| the aspects that were most valuable was her powerpoints and her examples of explaining the material. |
| I really liked learning about different speech terms and words. Audrey was always really
enthusiastic and kept the class really interested! |
| All of her lectures were very knowledgeable and I liked that she used Power
Point for her lectures. I liked all of the examples she'd use to relate what
we were learning to our every day lives. |
| The most valuable information in the course would be effective communication within relationships. I personally believe that is can be help in communicating problems with your peers, boss, or friends. Most importantly, it can be very helpful when applying for a job. |
| This course really helped me develop public speaking skills. Before taking this I was not comfortable with speaking in front of large groups of people, and now I'm not so hesitant. |
| I thought impromptu speeches were most valuable for me. I really don't like speaking in front of the
class especially if I'm not prepared and impromptu speeches definitely pushed me and made me a
better speaker. |
| Audrey was a great/fun teacher!! |
|
|
11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| Well, I think there was no invaluable aspects in this course. |
| All aspects were valuable. |
| The aspects of the course that were least valuable were a lot of the terminology that we learned from the book. I felt that a lot of the stuff from the book was useless because it was just about memorizing the text and it was not actually anything that could be applied in class. I do not like to memorize who invented a certain graph or who invented this communication theory, but instead I would rather learn something that I can actually apply in my life. |
| I am not sure if any of the concepts were any less valuable than some of the others. I did find some of the chapters not as interesting as some of the others, such as the one as the one on cultural communication, because I previously took a class that got more indepth into that concept. So it felt like a repeat of the same information. |
| n/a |
| the text book. We never talked about it in class and when I read it I had no idea what was going to
be on the test so a little more help there would have been nice. I can't learn from reading and it
makes the tests very difficult to study for. |
| The aspects I found least valuable were the sections about attraction and such. I felt like it didn't really help boost my knowledge about public speaking. |
| Speech models |
| nothing |
| the past |
| Being required to take midterms and a final was the least valuable. |
| Everything had equal value and importance. |
| I can't say any aspects were least valuable. All aspects covered are valuable. |
| none |
| I think there were a few terms we should not have had to memorize. |
| Everything we went over in class needed to be discussed so I guess there
isn't anything that wasn't valuable. |

19. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| She allowed us to ask questions whenever and speak out when we wanted to. She gave the
classroom a very comfortable and open feel so it was easy to be confident. |
| The instructor tried to use easy words for helping my understanding-well, it's just my feeling, but I appreciate that. And she was glad to be asked many questions in her class and also she was dealing with them wisely. |
| She is friendly and approachable. |
| What I found most valuable about Audrey Mendoza was that she applied things to our lives. She did not just go through the text word for word and bore us to death, but instead she would give us real life examples of things we could relate to and this made it much easier and more interesting to learn about these communication principles. |
| That she came to class prepared and ready to teach. She had a good understanding of the information that she was presenting and was able to explain it very clearly to the class. |
| she was very nice and could tell she wants students to succeed |
| Very knowledgeable in her field of study. Knew what she was talking about. |
| She did a great job presenting the different chapters. Her powerpoints were very concise and easy to follow. I liked the way she was very poised while presenting and made the information interesting to learn; she wasn't monotone or boring like a lot of other lectures can be. |
| She was get at getting the class to talk. Seemed very personable, like a friend but still obviously had
authority. |
| after hous helping |
| The most valuable is that she knows what she is talking about and is easy to talk to. |
| Her friendliness made it easy to talk to her and ask for help. |
| She listens to what her students have to say, with interest.
She incorporates contemporary music and videos into the lectures, and they do
help to understand terms and concepts. |
| Her teaching style was very good. She wasn't forceful in making you participate because her style of teaching makes students WANT to participate. A teaching ability that should be passed on to other professors.... |
| her willingnes to help and care |
| she was willing to help in and outside of class. |
| Audrey really enjoys what she teaches and I really enjoyed getting to know her. She was very
approachable and taught about many topics college students should be informed about. |
| I liked how she made good use of the book and her own knowledge learned that
wasn't in the book. |
| She made the class interesting and fun. We used examples that were relatable to us. She also use activities and games. |
| The way she conducted lessons. She made me feel very comfortable as her student, and she encouraged everyone in class to participate, which gave me a sense of belonging. |
| I thought the atmosphere and excitement in the class was helpful and made it easy to pay attention
and learn. |
| Audrey made the class really comfortable to speak and engage with the material, ask questions, etc.
For me, this made the class interesting and enjoyable. Good job Audrey!! |
|
|
20. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| I think she didn't mention useless word in this class. She tried to be a good model of speech and succeeded. |
| Nothing. Everything is valuable. |
| What I found least helpful was the preparation for the test. We had an in class review for one of the tests, but some of the questions on the tests asked for things that were very specific, so if you knew the general idea of a principle, but you did not know every exact detail, then you would not know get the answer right. |
| Some of the writing assignments and tests were not very useful in my opinion. could be better ways to see what students have learned. |
| On a lot of my writing assignments I got 23/25 or on a test 8/10 with no explanation of why I got
points off. The lack of feedback was not helpful with my papers or short answers. |
| I thought the tardy/absence policy was a little too strict. The unexcused absences I can understand being firm about, but the marking people absent when late is a little much, I think. I know it's a personal responsibility to make sure you are in class on time but some people have classes or prior commitments before that have them running a little late. |

not interested in. However, it had nothing to do with her and how she taught. |

22. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
|
| I liked learning about the different types of communication. |
| What I liked the most in this class was that Persuade part. It was a quite interesting chapter, since I'm not a person who can easily persuade someone. |
| Material was interesting and relative to students. |
| The aspects of the course that I liked the best was just the fact that it was interesting. I liked the fact that I was not falling asleep in the class and that it was usually interesting to learn about. I was never checking the time like I do in all my other classes and I liked the fact that it seemed easy to learn. |
| I enjoyed the interactive nature of the class, as we were free to ask questions and some of the assignments that we worked on in class were as a group where we had to collaborate in order to get the task completed. |
| I liked how we were all free to ask questions and discuss things in class. |
| Since it was a speech class, I like giving speeches. I wish there had been more of them and count
more towards our final grade. |
| I really liked the relaxed environment of the class. It was easy to share opinions and ask questions; Audrey made it really comfortable and didn't embarrass anyone when they needed clarification about anything. |
| group discussions. |
| I liked learning about the other students in the class, the conversations we had, and the games we did. |
| It didn't happen yet but I think I will enjoy the informative speech. |
| Class discussions. |
| I liked the informative speeches |
| jeopardy |
| powerpoints, examples, visuals ect. |
| I liked learning about different communication terms and watching videos. I also liked how we
played jeopardy a few times before exams. |
| I liked to our improvtus |
| I like the activities |
| The way the course was run and the people in it. |
| Impromptus. |
| i liked the conversations with classmates and engaging the materials the best. |
|
|
23. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
|
| The informative speech powerpoints and outlines |
| I had some difficulties when I dealt with first chapter. There were many technological words, I didn't like it. |
| I liked all aspects. |
| The aspects of the course that I liked the least was the fact that we had to know information from the book. I think it would have been more effective to just learn everything in class and then really study those main points. I felt that it comes to a point of information overload when we learn material in class, and then we go and read a lot of stuff out of the book that we usually do not even retain. |
| I did not always enjoy some of the lectures, because of having to sit throughout the whole class period. Though I understand that sometimes we need to go though notes in a lecture format in order to get more information across. |
| the mandatory attendance. |
| The tests. The short answer section was hard to study for because there are so many lists in class
and in the book It's hard to remember all of them but for me it is impossible to remember the ones
from the book. A little more clarification for the material that will be on the test would be helpful. |
| I would've liked to have more speeches. I expected there to be more speaking involved not so much bookwork. It didn't really give me the confidence in speaking in front of people when I only did a few very short impromptus and one informative speech. Maybe we could've had speeches instead of homework assignments? That way we could incorporate the book and have the presenting time as well. |
| just having to speak in front of the class sometimes |
| Having to do the presentation. |
| The midterms. |
| Nothing. |
| The exams |
| harshness of grading |
| the speech we had to give at the end of class and she wasn't clear of what materials in the book would be on the test. |
| I did not like how we did not practice speech ahead of time. We should have been given more
oppurtunities to practice. |
| I wasn't a fan of the exams. I didn't like how they were structured point
based. |
| writing assignments |
| It could get boring during lectures, but it was nothing too bad. |
| Lectures |
| Again, sometimes criteria of writing assignments weren't made clear. |
|

8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
|
| I like the group activities/games we did because it was fun and also taught us the main point/concepts we were learning. |
| Just the chance to speak in front of people and building confidence while getting better. |
| I found learning about interpersonal relationships and conflict most valuable because I can actually apply to situations and relationships that I experience everyday. Learning how to properly do presentions was also helpful. |
| learning how to speak in public |
| I found that it helped with preparation and reducing my anxiety during public speaking. |
| The Impromptu speeches helped strengthened my confidence in standing up infront of people. |
| methods of communication |
| PowerPoint lectures. Extra credit opportunities |
| Extra credit assignments, powerpoints on Laulima |
| I liked learning about how we have physical and emotional needs. |
| The credit. |
| I learned to be more comfortable in public speaking. |
| I found presenting in front of peers to be most helpful. It helped me to be more confident in front of others. |
| The powerpoints and information |
| self learning & group work |
| Audrey was great |
| Lectures were very effective and connection between class and Audrey was very
strong. Class felt comfortable in classroom setting to speak up. |
| real life application, in class exercises |
| Even master students (not professors or certified teachers) can also be biased in towards their students and unbiased towards others, helps to keep your place so they don't fail you just because they don't like you. |
| Many of the lessons are applicable to many real-life situations |
| Using your own examples, including comic strips and youtube videos, so we can easily understand
what we're learning. |
| Speaking in front of the classes. Informative speeches were cool. |
| It helped prepare me for speeches in other classes |
| Good group activities |
| Audrey is an incredible teacher and she is always prepared and knows her stuff! The book was easy
to get through and read especially with Audrey's powerpoints which she always explained really well. |
| I found that the most valuable and helpful part about this course was a good teacher and great peers. Very easy to connect with and communicate with. |
| the group activities and encouraging everyone to participate |
| explained principles |
| Just being able to get more public speaking experience. |
| Activities |
| How to communicate effectively verbally and nonverbally to get your message across. Different methods to communicate and what people pay attention to when you are the speaker. I especially value all the characteristics a speaker must have in order to be a more effective speaker in order for his/her audience to understand the message being sent across. |
|
|
9. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
|
| Nothing, really. |
| Definitions about speaking and human behavior, thought processes |
| I can't really think of anything specific that wasn't helpful in some way. |
| writing papers |
| Textbook information seems practically useless without Audrey Mendoza's personal stories as examples. |
| The scavenger hunt |
| Outline for speeches is worth too much points compared to the actual speech. Homework
papers were graded harder than my English class papers. Impromptu speeches. |
| The book -- it was really expensive, yet I only opened it the day before exams |
| I didn't like how the assignments were boring and the classes were uninteresting. The book was also
boring. |
| I didn't learn much, especially about speech. |
| Debate. even though it was fun, i dont think im going to be in a debate in the future |
| Nothing was not a big help from the course. Everything in class led to some important point. |
| None |
| textbook information |
| Everything was valuable |
| Speech Debate. I felt that it was quite unnecessary. |
| lectures |
| Learning about everything I already knew about public speech because if I'm not mistaken, students have taken public speech since high school, maybe even middle school. |
| N/A. Everything was helpful and valuable. |
| The textbook, didn't look into it as much |
| Learned how to get up and give a speech with confidence |
| I found that the book wasn't really helpful during this course. I am not so sure you need it because most of the information was presented to you. |

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
|
| nothing, really. |
| Sometimes the timing of questions right after explaining something would make students not feel
like answering them because they were almost rhetorical and easy. But getting interaction and
participation from young adults is a hard thing that comes with time i think |
| I thought it was well done. The class didn't engage too much but that was mostly our own fault. |
| not grading the papers so hard and the test |
| Possibly make her questions more clear. Also, refrain from asking questions about things we just went over, no more than a minute ago. We're not sure whether you want us to just think or repeat what we see/hear. |
| She was very enthusiastic, and seemed as if she enjoyed teaching us this topic. |
| Easier on grading homework papers. |
| It is hard to answer the questions she asks us when we are supposed to be taking notes on a power
point. I end up ignoring her speaking so I can properly write down the class material. I think if she
waited to ask questions after we read what was on the power point I would have learned more. I also
think that she should teach more about communicating effectively and how we communicate with
each other. I wish I learned more about speaking in public as well. |
| Teach better. |
| Nothing. Class is taught well. |
| She was a good TA. If anything, it would help if on the assignments she would explain a little bit more for what she wants us to write. |
| She's good |
| Shes doing great |
| gain better control of class, students clearly don't respect her |
| Be more fundamental. Her teaching method is set so strongly on in one manner. Try to mix things up a bit and do something different, go about your teaching methods a little different from time to time. Also have more time for speech and less time learning about things we already know. |
| Classroom disipline. Many disruptive students made it difficult to learn, I just wish she had booted them out. I pay a large sum of money to come to this school from out of state. |
| Have more small speeches, like impromptus, so students can be more comfortable when talking in
front of an audience and not get so nervous. |
| No need. She's doing just fine. |
| Make attendance mandatory so everybody will show up |
| Maybe have a printed study guide for the tests |
| Absolutely nothing! I am sad that this course is coming to an end and I really am going to miss the
comfortable yet educational atmosphere of her classroom! I truly enjoyed taking this course. |
| Maybe, get a class vote on what types of speeches they want to do. For example, a persuasive and demonstration speech rather then a debate and informative. Switch it up a bit. |
| she was awesome |
| All Good. |
| more practice |
| It's hard to say because Audrey was very consistent in her teaching and had a very fun and effective approach to our class but one thing that she can improve on is just giving more smaller assignments that can make a difference in our grade. I think that the bigger projects make it more difficult because it makes such a big impact on our grade and is harder to change. But she did provide a lot of extra credits which were really good. |

| Audrey is a really good teacher and I enjoy her class. She makes it fun and enjoyable. She is always available to help and even when i email her on the weekends, she gets back to me right away. |
| Sorry we were so quiet all semester. |
| good teacher |
| Good teacher overall. Like the enthusiam. |
| The class was not what i expected. |
| Audrey is a decent teacher, being that she hasn't been teaching very long. She has a lot to improve on but in time she has the characteristics of becoming a good teacher, whom everyone could take a liking to. Staying more on the speech subject will help, some classes seem to veer off to subjects related to speech but not of direct importance to actual public speech and communication. |
| Fun class. And I learned a lot. I love all the extra credit assignments. |
| Nice teacher, very approachable |
| I would recommend (and have recommended) Audrey to many of my peers! She is so approachable
and was made to be a teacher! |

| Audrey came to class everyday with a great attitude and a big smile on her face, which made her class a great learning environment. She always tried to encourage all of us to become involved with class discussions. She was very knowledgable about the course and used great examples to help her explanations. She knows how to teach in a way to keep "college students" attention. I recommend her class to anyone else and I would take another course with her if I have the chance to. |
