13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Her teaching was very good and it was easy to understand and she tried to always make the materials understandable.
She is a great teacher.
She knows the content pretty well.
I dont know any.
She was fair
-The strengths of keeping the students actively involved in making sure they are paying attention to the lessons learned. - Exam grades are always given out in a prompt and timely fashion. - Resources on Laulima were uploaded fast - The type of attitude brought to class in terms of being a teacher she is seems very interested in teaching the class about zoology and helping students with questions.
I think she's doing her best as a teacher.
-She knows her stuff -Lectures are clear -Outgoing
she is very organized when it comes to making her presentations. she tries to get her students engaged in her class
Spoke clearly, tried to explain things to simpler terms if needed, and enjoys what she does.
She's helpful and accessible outside the classroom.
Professor Usagawa's major strengths as a teacher were that she knew what she was talking about and she always made sure that the class understood what she was talking about. I enjoyed doing her mini questionnaires throughout her lectures because it helped refresh my memory.
When spoke natural about curtain topics it was easy for me to comprehend the topic.
Wanted us to do well on the exam, Made effort to highlight topics on slides that would be on exam
She is a teacher who has a good sense of humor whenever the class needs a laugh. she knows what shes talking about and is very dependable when you need a question answered.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Nothing
She needs to provide a more detailed outline for the exams and be more aware of what the A & P dept requires. She shouldn't expect us to memorize the whole chapters, but pick out the major topics. She shouldn't read verbatim from the power points but point out key points (or take home message) that we should know for the chapters.
None
Get the students more involved and give worksheet assignments to get the information in our head.
That she show maybe one on one to her class, and show that she has concer. I understand that she is a strict teacher but her teaching style is not good. I would say have more class involvment. Instead of just strictly lecture. Too much powerpoint and not very theral on the each subject. When she was asked a question, she didnt know how to answer and would recommend us to our book.
hw
I think lecturing the whole time was not good i did not retain anything from the lecture, I think you need more like quiz type things. Majority of the class probably felt this way, because a lot of the time the class was empty
She should sometimes use the white board for actual explanation rather than just a boring power point.
You know she is a good person, very smart, and she knows her stuff. I am aware that this is only her 1st year teaching - or something like that. However, as she continues her career as a college professor I hope she can have more in class activities to help students learn the content better. I know lectures are not the funnest classes but to help students learn, group projects and activities should be inputed as they do help. It also eliminates the rift among students. When that happens you know the teacher is doing a great job and students are learning. I know were not in Elementary school anymore but in all my classes I have, we do have some kind of activities. I honestly look forward to going to those classes everywhere. I know that I don't need to go to my professor for help because students can help me out as well.
I wish she could take her time going through the material. But I understand it is very hard since there is only a limited time and so much to go through.
Maybe go over a review before every exam.
Not to read directly off the powerpoint slides when teaching
Sometimes i felt the lectures were a bit rushed, like they weren't explained well enough. I think Professor Usagawa could slow down a bit and maybe explain the concepts more clearly.
for me most times sounded like you were just reading off the power points and kind of threw me off on everything making it hard to grasp the content, which made it hard to pay attention because it was like me reading the words and not comprehending it. Just sound more natural when speaking to the class.
Learn to pronounce some of the biological terms correctly, Learn chemistry, Be more confident, Don't read off the slides the whole class
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She suggests many different ways we can do to prepare for the exams and gave us extra credits.
None
She helped us connect with information by applying it to our life. Also posted up notes for the chapter on laulima.
She didn't show any.
Well she was very understanding
-Answering students questions before and after class - Revising schedules when chapters may become more difficult for students to learn in a certain amount of time.
in the begging of the semester, she had us put our names and major ect. and later used that information to use in her class lectures. also she would answer questions that nay of the students had
She would get upset if our test scores were low.But encourage us to do better.
She's flexible in re-scheduling exams.
Professor Usagawa always made sure we knew what was going on and what was going to be on our exams.
n/a
Encourage us to look at old exams, Made time for study group
She always lets us know of our grades after every exam is taken. If students are in the danger zone, she lets them know of the choices they can do to boost their grade.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes because she know what she's talking about and it was easy to understand the materials.
No, I would not, because she needs to better her teaching skills.
yes.
If you are a person that can learn well on your own then yes.
No, she isnt ready to be teaching students that want to get into a field of human anatomy and physiology. The way she teaches is quite confusing at times and she never explains anything that well.
yes
If they want a class where they can learn from just listening then go ahead but the learning style was not for me. I need someone that can really grab my attention and make it interesting.
Yes, because she is a very nice teacher and brings a positive attitude to the class.
I think so.
I think I would. Mainly because she knows what shes teaching and she offers a lot of extra credit. I'm not gonna lie, but I did get frustrated a few times. There's so much content to study and memorize... That I did wish sometimes there were more incentives into getting a better grade. Not just exams. But the extra credit did help.
i would recommend her but her style of teaching doesn't suit all students. her class moves by fast so if a student is a slow learner than she wouldn't do well in her class
I will because she is a good teacher.
Yes, if you are willing to work really hard to know the subject you should take her class.
Yes, i would. She's pretty fun and easy going. She assigns reasonable extra credit points that also helps out our grades.
sure
No, she read off the slides. I could have just stayed home and read the slides, but the only reason I did come to class was because attendance was part of grade.
Yes i would because she sticks to the time and ends class on time everytime, or sometimes even earlier.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Nothing.
None
Im sorry to say, but I dont like her as a teacher. She seems to lack confidence as the teacher of the class, and just seems like she doesnt know anything about what she is doing. Anyone can reread large power point word for word for a lesson. As well as the study guides were horribly put together.
She is nice
I would like to say that, even if another teacher told you that in order to pass Zoology with an A you need to study so and so hours every week, doesn't mean it should be that way. I prefer every teacher to have their own teaching system in accordance with the college rules etc. That makes a successful teacher.
none
Ms. Usagawa is very nice, though if you want an A in her class you should be ready to work really hard.
I pretty much enjoyed your class this semester although sometimes i felt a bit lost ;)
n/a
I like her as a person, very sweet and approachable. She just needs some fine tuning on the topics in order to flow and at least seem like she knows what she is talking about.
She is a very nice teacher and is easy to talk to.

Good luck, wish you the best. No hard feelings alright? I coulda kiss ass'd and said "aw my god you are the best teacher evar u do everything perfect" but I wanted to let you know my honest opinion on things. Your still new, I know you will adjust. Wish me luck as well. -Azad
none
The class itself is is undeniably hard, extra time for studying is required if you want an A.
only problem i had was wish class was longer so we didn't have to rush through every chapter and there was more time for class participation to ask question during class while we went over each topic

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She is very kind and understanding she. Posts things promptly and answers question quickly.
Her ability to be on time. She has always been on time. I also like the fact that we can text her when we have trouble understanding class material.
Organized and on time
It's good that when the people in our class asked questions she answered them pretty well, and they did ask a lot of questions. So it was pretty cool that she could answer them. It's also good that she uploads study guides and the powerpoints for the exams. It's also good that she always came to class on time and was never late for class.
She cares about her students and is interested in working to become a better teacher. She worked hard teaching only for the second time in a time-constrained summer semester. I think as she becomes more familiar with the teaching process and the material she will continue to develop her own style of teaching and feel more comfortable fielding questions. She also has a great teaching assets in being naturally outgoing and in genuinely enjoying the learning process.
Very clear, precise, and friendly.
none. She sucks.
None.
Tricia knew her material of anatomy pretty well. She also had a great friendly personality where I could approach her and ask her questions. She also showed up to all of our lectures to teach.
Knowledge in the field is definitely her strong point. She also has the organization to cover the sections promptly within the given time span.
She's not monotone.
She's younger so she's able to communicate well with students and relate to them with real life examples related to our age.
Positive attitude all the time. Always made her best effort to answer our questions in and out of class. And provided us with a lot of study material, more that she really had to. It was a for sure plus for us!
On time, responds to emails quickly, willing to give help and provide study help pointers.
shes nice
She presents herself very well in class and answers all questioned asked to the best of her ability. She has a very friendly personality that makes her easy to talk to. She gives a few good example when teaching that make it easier for students to better understand the material.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Intergrating text with note needs improvement.
Be clear with explanation of material. Learn how to pronounce the PSIO words before coming to class.
Maybe make the subject relatable to daily life/clinical applications rather than only referencing the textbook
No changes, I think she is doing pretty good, especially since it's summer school now.
Specific to the summer program, I think she should consider some adjustment of the final two weeks of testing/studying. This could consist of either leaving a greater time allotment for student's to prepare for the cumulative final exam, or making the final exam weigh less (it's currently 15% of our overall grades), or not having a cumulative final. The point being that the current structure is too constricted. Another suggestion is for her to continue developing the more interactive elements of class, such as the daily quizzes.
Try to be more specific in your studies. Such as, try not to read everything off the slide. Try lecturing the class within your own words, because I felt like the class just drag. If you explained it in your own words we would have a easier time understanding the information. Also when you give student guides please give a little more specificity. I feel like the study guides were to vague.
Umm... teach some more. Offer more classes. Try to teach a little more out of the box rather than read entirely off of powerpoint.
To know her materials and not just read of the slide. Give some examples so that we will be able to learn more.
Everything. stick to your other job.
Do not read off the slideshows constantly.
Tricia needs to learn how to pronounce some of the terminologies better. That way, other students will think that she's prepared for her lectures. I hate to sound harsh, but it takes away Tricia's great quality of teaching when she asks the class how to pronounce several terminologies.
I think she need change the lecture style.
I didn't particularly care for how scattered and varied the study guides were when related to the tests. Only the last three were actually very useful, and the slideshows pretty much invalidated the notes. While it was nice to have a plethora of resources, some of the information wasn't needed or particularly useful for the exams or for an introductory course.
She could work at being better at explaining things rather than just reading things straight off of the slides.
maybe more anatomy game to get us interested more in the subject matter.
I recommend less reading off the slides and more depth in the material to help us really really understand.
Provide more real life examples that relate to what were learning that way we have an easier time of remembering stuff.
too many to mention
More examples that we can relate to and better understand the material. Those examples will also make it easier for her to teach so she doesn't have to read off her slides. Better study guides for exams would help since there is a lot of material that is covered in this class.
Explain a little more and relate to other things.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Allowwed students to call or text her via cellular phone. She also helped us by posting diagrams ahead of time so that we can study them in time for the exam.
She shows great concern for students. i always felt like i was treated fairly.
Prompt response to emails
She let us use one page of notes from the muscles handouts. This was really good because the muscles chapter had a lot to study and it's sort of hard taking this class and lab at the same time. She also let us take the online wiley plus quiz for extra credit because it really helps, even though I didn't get better than 90% and it didn't count.
By answering questions about various student concerns and by allowing students to improve their class standing with extra credit learning opportunities.
Show adequate concern for students
-- snipped --
Nope
If students asked Tricia questions about their grade status, or about exams, she showed concern for all of the students in the class.
She always encouraged us to participate.
She would stay after class and assist us if we needed. Gave us her personal cell phone number. And gave extra credit to those who needed it.
Was willing to give help outside the classroom.
she gave us her cell number
She is very personable and tries to accomidate for everyones needs. She created extra credit for students who needed it and made the effort for us to rise our grades.
Giving us extra credit and study guides.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I wouldn't recommend taking this class during the summer session because she went very quickly through the material.
She has the potential to be a great teacher. I get the feeling that she knows her material. However, she has a hardtime explaining herself well.
Maybe in the future (with the hopes of her getting to know the material better and presenting it in a fun manner)
Yes, because she is good at teaching and seems to know when I'm falling asleep in class so makes us do things like puts in quiz questions inbetween the powerpoint slides or makes us draw the types of cells.
yes. She is friendly and knowledgeable.
I will never ever recommend her to anyone. Even if I really hate that person. Really don't know why she was even hired to be a teacher. I will never attend her class ever again.
No way, she cant say any word over eight letter right. they are all medical terms we should know and at least learn how to say...
Yes, I definitely would highly recommend students and friends to take Zoology 141 from Tricia! She has a great personality, not cocky, not arrogant, and easy to approach her to ask questions about assignments, or exams. Her exams were also straightforward with no tricky questions (although she did mention that the exam questions are from a test bank).
For those who are looking to take the medical field seriously, then yes. Since I'm not, then I would suggest a different teacher to get just what you need to survive.
Highly recommended, she's super cool!
Yes, because the way she presented the material was in a way easier to retain, but a lot of studying must be on my out time.
Yea, I dont see why not.
no
Yes. I think once she gains more experience, it will get easier for to teach and become more experienced in teaching the material as the years go on. She knows the material, it is just the matter of her getting used to expalining it to others.
Yes, clear with teaching. Just needs a little improvement.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
She is very kind and easy to pay attention to, she speaks very clearly.
Overall very good considering it was her first time teaching this course
She is an awesome teacher who sometimes says words weird but it kind of makes the class funny. Like the word skeletal sounds weird but it's kind of cool the way that she says it, like ska-leet-all or something like that. The way she taught the class was pretty organized and just a couple times she kind of uploaded the class fill in blank notes late, but that's not too much of a problem.
Overall, just lecture the class within your own words, or at least try to not lecture your class like we were reading the book. Because, I felt like when we read the book you were pretty much lecturing us from the book.
Keep smiling.
She should learn how to pronounce the words and not just read of from the slide word for word. Stop saying "umm". I felt that I did not learn anything from her and I should of just taken an online class.
I wish i had patz, shook, or jonen.. I would do anything to have had them. because I actually would have learned something
Nice teacher.
I would say that Tricia is qualified and good enough to be a full-time faculty of Zoology at KCC! This is if she's still in a master's or a PhD program right now, and is contemplating on becoming an instructor for this course.
She'll probably be a good prof, she's just new and needs to get more familiar and comfortable with the material.
She a nice lady.
Enjoyed the class
She is a very nice person and very easy to talk to. As mentioned before, as she gains more expereince in teaching, she will soon be in expert in explaining the material more fluiently.
18. Other comments:
Overall she is a good teacher. I don't know what else to write now in other comments. I should go study for final now. Thank you.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Caring, wants all students to succeed, tries to make sure all students understand material.
She is very informative of the class subject and assignments, knows her subject well and makes us feel comfortable in class. She interacts with students very well.
Excellent semester by a new professor...knew the subject area quite well.
tricia got the class to participate wich made it alot of fun. she kept the materials interesting and motivated the us to learn
Knowledge, amiability, fairness, and the ability to relate to students.
She's smart, approachable, and stimulating
Fun teacher
Keeps the learning environment fun and interesting. Stays with the topic. flexible but strict at the same time. Young, able to synchronize with the students.
Easy to get along with and always there to help.
She explained concepts in a basic manner.
she's pretty.
She helped the students with the models and dissections.
Getting things done in a timely manner
Tricia is a vibrant person. When instructor's are energized, like Tricia, we can expect a fun learning environment. This was beneficial to a lab class where participation was a must. Tricia met with each group and discussed the labs with students. Answered questions about the labs, but also provided applicable examples for each of the labs. In doing so, she helped students engage in discussion about the lab. She got students to think and discuss application.
related well to the students
She was always accessible via email or text. She also was very helpful and understanding. She truly acted as an aid to her students.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
tricia doesnt need to change anything
I only know her ways of teaching lab, and I'm not a teacher, so I think she did well. Compared to my last lab teacher, she did awesome!!!
N/A
she was unable to come to class one time and we didn't know what happened to her until we gave her a call. So, improving her accountability, or informing her students if she is going to be late or won't make it to class beforehand would be great.
Please return quizzes or graded material back.
Give a more detailed overview of the material that will be covered that day.

Tricia could be better prepared for the class. As it was her first semester at KCC, I think she discovered things were not so automatic. There were several occasions when she was unclear about equipment and/or exam/quizzes. For a first time lab instructor at KCC, this is understandable. She assisted students, helped us find solutions, and answered our questions.
should lecture first and then give quizzes at end of class instead of beginning.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Always took time for questions, asked students if they understood everything.
She would announce in the beginning of class to come and see her for any concerns, ask a certain student to see her after class, or ask if anyone has any concerns or questions.
Offered make up labs for any sick students
spoke to us directly about our progress
She emailed us and let us know what's going on before lab. We are never misinformed.
She was always ready to help whenever we didn't understand things.
She helped answer any of our questions
Always asks students if there are things we don't understand in the topic. She walks around from student to student (group to group) to make sure we are doing what we are supposed to do and if we need help she is always available, she might not know all the answers to our questions but she knows where to find the answers.
She made sure that the information given to us was available and correct and was always available for help.
Being available to help those in need.
she reminds her students about the task for the upcoming class.
She emails everyone to remind us about upcoming experiments and exams.
She helped us with the models and dissections.
Tricia showed concerned for students by allowing a day to make up labs and for helping identify parts on the models.
Tricia often spoke to students one-on-one, meaning she engaged the discussion with the students. She answered emails promptly. She talked to students to find out about lectures, students, and instructors. I think she wanted to understand and listen to student concerns.
through emails
She showed conceren by always being available and responsing promptly to questions.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes. She is a teacher who actually cares whether or not you learn.
I would recommend her to other students and inform them that she is not intimidating, makes you feel comfortable in class, very informative of the class subject, you can understand the subject very well, organized.
Definitely because she's smart and knew her subject and demonstrated care for her students...
absolutely, she is sweet, fun and she knows her stuff
I would recommend her to anyone doing lab because her knowledge is fresh. If you want to learn lab and have fun at the same time, she is definitely the right teacher to have.
Yes b/c she makes sure you know the material and she teaches in a way that makes you remember things like when she taught us the ABCs for naming the different branches of the heart.
Yes, fun teacher and more importantly: merciful.
Yes, I'm always looking forward to going to class whenever it's fun learning and re-learning. When a student is having fun in his/her class, it turns out as a good memory, and it helps in retaining information.
Yes. She helps her students and explains things well.
yes because she provides a good learning environment.
I would recommend Tricia Usagawa because she assisted us with the models and dissections.
Yes, she is a understanding teacher.
Tricia is energetic and young. Because of this she may be able to make connections with the students, keeping them involved with the topics. I think her personality will encourage students to enjoy studying the material for the class.
yes, i think especially since this was her first semester teaching she will get much better with time. she shows much potential.
yes because she was incredibly helpful during lab.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
She is a very good teacher. You need more teachers like her who actually teaches the class and interacts with her students.
great at her job
Tricia is just like a student when you're in her class. She doesn't personify a teacher that shows intimidation, she relates to us students and this down-to-earth personality encourages us to be more open. This helped me learn better because I felt comfortable with what I was doing.
I think she should teach again.
Interesting.
keep up the good work.

Great job this semester. See you around campus in the fall.
18. Other comments:
This course did not always seem to have the best organization. Some lab's objectives were unclear/pointless.
Thank you for giving me an awsome semester. I'm so thankful to have had you as my teacher. It is teachers like you that make a student feel good in class to excel.
Professor Usagawa is awesome!!!
Stay ahead of the students for the lecture in the fall. Many students will be applying to the ADN program. Because it is competitive, they will point the finger at you for a poor grade if you appear to be unprepared for the lecture. Set the bar high and keep it there. Students may complain, but the reality is, is the subject isn't hard to grasp so much as there is a lot of material to absorb in a short period of time
