13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
drawing with such passion
He's patient and humble. If you ask for help with getting a face right he'll come over and show you. He tells you from the start that even he has problems and needs to keep practicing.
Personable, passionate, encouraging. Positive. Establishes a meaningful relationship with each student. His passion for art is contagious. I loved hearing him "talk story" occasionally, too. It has been a pleasure getting to know him.
He understands what he's teaching
Very calm and supportive.
He truly CARES about all his students--the good, the bad, and the ugly of us--we can feel it. He understands us. He inspires us with examples of his former students who are now working in great art jobs (like with Disney). Not only is he competent, but he explains the necessity of the different drawing lessons for future "real world" art jobs.
very knowledgeable and teaches very well.
He encouraged many of his students to think for themselves in doing their art projects rather than having to rely on him every time to come in and help them in a certain area of matter. He even introduces and teaches us different ways to approach certain areas when producing sketches and other types of objects and organic items. Overall, Russell is a really impressive instructor to have around your learning environment.
He's very caring and responsible.
Passion
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
non-explains clearely
Perhaps implementing a mandatory 5 minute break halfway through the T/TH class?
do more teaching, rather than preaching.
Less time on each drawing. 4 classes for one art project makes it boring.
N/A
I don't think there's anything wrong with the way Russell teaches his classes, he's a really excellent instructor to take.
To let students know ahead of time when major assignments will be dues like midterms.
Nothing
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
he helped them with their drawings when they wanted help and also shown us great drawing techniques
By emails and talking to us in person. I would know.
Constructive critiques were excellent! Also, Russell's (gentle) honesty was much appreciated, for example if a student was not up to par in skill or attendance.

By NOT piling on alot of homework!
helped us whenever we needed it.
He encourage them to think for themselves rather than having the students to rely on him every time to take them step by step.
He lets them know the homework assignments due next classes when they couldn't make it to the previous classes or absent on the day of.
Asking them questions
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes because he is a great prof.
For sure. He's very knowledgeable and he is easy to understand.
YES. See # 13 (strengths as a teacher)
Depends the students.
Wholeheartedly. He is a sweetheart, and wants us to succeed.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He definitely knows how to work around others and how he could help us improve our as animators.
Knowledge of art. Extremely enthusiastic.
-His understanding of his subject matter -His persistence and somewhat strict attitude in pushing the students to do what they need to do in order to become whatever they want -His patience in showing the students the process of doing what he teaches
Talented artist and stern teacher. Really focuses on building a foundation of good techniques.
Russel teaches painting and drawing for, what I believe, +20 years at KCC. He knew well about the human structures and his sketches/drawing are flawless and graphic.
-He knows his subject well -He points out what we need help with and he helps when we need it -He's nice and encourages us to practice our work even out of class ("Be obsessed!")
his major strengths of this course as a teacher is his understanding in life drawing and composing forms from the materials given. his lectures were easy to learn from and he is very helpful in showing his students the improvements of their projects.
Has a lot of background experience in the subject. Life drawing
He tells it like it is.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
This might be nit picking, but could you please stop using that elderly woman as a model, or a least let use her only once a semester. I have nothing against elderly women I would just prefer them clothed. Maybe next time to explore female figures you could hire models that are smaller or overweight or pregnant. I also would like to do any work that doesn't involve charcoal Also could we do other things in class besides drawing naked models. Like learning how to animate with model sketches or do character designs.
Not to tell students to quit animation if they are slow to learn and comprehend the objectives.
More teacher demonstrations of technique.
No comment, class seems fine the way it is.
no comment
i would not recommend any changes to his teachings
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He sits down with us and shows how we make the drawings more realistic.
-He comes around the class and tells them what they need to do in order to improve their work. -His reminder of the assignments, tardiness, etc. as part of the Grading system -He gives students (future animators) challenging assignments, etc. that could help them improve faster as artists.
wants us to be our best and practice so that we become better artists.
During breaks, he sees and describe what we improve on our work and what needs to improved. During our time drawing, he walks around and gives us tips on how to draw the body.
-He helps us with out work -He tells us when his office hours are and encourages us to go if we need any help
if a student would struggle in one of their drawings he would demonstrate certain areas that need adjustments.
Showing constructs
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes. You will definitely learn something about modeling and 3d art.
Absolutely, his way of teaching may be slow, but because of this, it creates a calming effect in the class's atmosphere, which is actually a good thing, especially for those who gets nervous in seeing complex figures.
Yes, very talented and pushes you to do more to be better.
Only to those that already have experience with drawing.
sure, why not?
if this student would want to learn how to draw proportionate figures and improve their drawing skills i would recommend his class.
Yes. Good stuff.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
I would like to say is that even though I do believe Russel is a good teacher. I do personally do not enjoy the class, in fact I hate coming there every morning. I feel I don't have as much freedom in to do this art work in my own way to make feel more comfortable and I really hate working like that. But to be fair it's really not Russell's fault, it's just the concept in general.
Russel knows what he says and he has the experience to prove it. Whether he tells us to get better or try to devote time into drawing (even if it may sound insulting), he is just looking out for us so we can get draw at a advanced state. I didn't know how to draw humans very well but Russel's class helped me define structure, know how to draw a "body". Thanks :)
He nice and interesting to talk to.
18. Other comments:
For some reason every time I go there I may look fine and I'm always in a bad mood, especially after I leave.
Many in the class may seem like they're joking about the drawing as an "obsession" part, but I believe many are actually serious about it. They joke around on the outside, but actually gets serious in getting the job done. I actually like that, as my motto.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Very patient and knowledgable man when it comes it our artwork. I liked how he took his time to explain anything that was unclear to students.
Very kind, helpful, good at explaining things in a simple way.
-helps people with their individual weaknesses -demonstrates drawing skills in ways that everyone can learn -looks at progress instead of overall skills -assigns reasonable hw with a lot of time to complete
He encouraged us and showed how to draw certain parts when we seem to not know how. When we show the work, he gave fair criticism or praised the work. He tells the students to come over when he starts to draw certain parts on which everybody has trouble on.
He is very encourage students. His explain about drawing technic is short, but very effect and understandable.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
No changes. Assignments, classwork and participation was overall well rounded and I enjoyed learning a lot.
nothing, he's an amazing teacher.
none
Not much...
I don't think he need to change, but I would like to know more about drawing techinics.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
staying consistent with homework and also classwork projects. he would walk around the class and involve the students through demonstrations and lectures. I saw a vast improvement in everyone's individual work throughout the semester.
Mr. Sunabe helped us a lot by focusing on our individual weaknesses. He walked around the classroom several times during class to check up on ourn progress with what we were working. When there was something that he felt we needed help on he would personally show us and explain clearly ways to improve. He was great at helping us to see art in a a very relative way.
He asks the students if they know what happened to anybody who was either late or did not show up for class. When something bad happened, he looks worried and hopes that he/she is well.
He had patience even students got lazy or made excuses
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes
yes! most definitely. he's a great teacher for beginning/intermediate students as he is patient and kind.
Yes because even though I have no intentions on majoring in any sort of art, I still think this class was very helpful and fun.
Yes, I do. I'm a international student and my listening skill is not good. He always speak slowly and clearly so I could understand easily.
Yes. Not only is he fair but he also gives fair criticism and does not have a large temper. Everybody seems to like him and he is very easy-going, making he well-liked.
I would recommend to anyone who interest in drawing.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
thank you for being an inspiration.
He is a very kind person. I like that he seems very passionate about his art. I feel like there aren't many people who are truly passionate about what they do and Mr. Sunabe is one of the few.
I like him.
Thank you for great lecture!! I learned a lot and had a great class! I hope to see you in on other class!!

Very passionate!
Encouragement while allowing self analysis.
Very calm, gets to know each of the students and knows exactly what to say to help the students notice their weaknesses and strengths. Very encouraging and kind.
best teacher ever a really good teacher i am proud to be getting taught by a accomplished artist
Very encourage students and he make comfortable atmospher
Good intuition on when to step in and help, and when to stay hands-off. Helpful but not overbearing.
As a teacher Russell is very experienced, knowledgeable and professional. He evaluates student's strengths and weaknesses and helps in developing skills and personal styles. Great professor with fantastic attitude, extremely inspiring!
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None. Fun class, great professor. Would definitely recommend the class.
none maybe some supplies could be supplied
I think less people, about 8 people would be better for one class.
Prompt grading on individual assignments (I have no idea how well I'm doing in the class, if I'm doing "A" work or "F" work, until after the class is already over...) Less time should be spent at the beginning on drawings (Intro to Drawing is a prereq...) so that more time can be spent on paintings.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Helped me when I was stuck, always gave great advice, and shared his passion for art.
Goes by to each of the students, making them step away from their work to help them see what is working and what could be improved.
he was awesome
He helped when students need any help, he even gave us a starch bar.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes! His class is fun and easy and inspiring.
Yes. Easygoing learning environment, the students know what is expected of them and lets them go at their own pace.
yes
I would recommend him, he was great teacher
All the painting teachers have their strengths but I think Russell's painting class has the least stressful environment from what I've seen and so I'd recommend him for that reason.
I would definitely recommend students to take Russell's class
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
I had a lot of fun learning new things from Russel
great teacher
I had wonderful painting class. I had a stress when I got stuck, but You won't never push over, so I didnot hate your painting class.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He knows his material well, and is a great artist himself. He knows when to give you advice and tips on how to improve your work, however he is not too pushy. His explanations and instructions are clear. He also encouraged us to interact with other students and reflect on each others work.
very good teacher knows what his is doing and, skillful demenstrated the concepts
He gave clear instructions and answered any questions we had.
He totally knew his subject area well, and he slowly demonstrates his lesson through application.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
best teacher ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He tends to repeat his experiences to students all the time. That may be just a minor fault though.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He not only gave them advice when they needed it, but he built relationships with the students.
he will talk to the student personally, and concern about the student miss his class and would as them why. he is very kind and nice to all his students
He would ask us if we understood and showed how to draw things again if we didn't understand.
He assists students and tells them what to do whenever the students are in a slump upon what they should so next or how to fix their mistakes. He encourages students to think and understand what they want to do in their future or how to develop their skills more.
For me especially, he was concerned of me not showing up to class on time for the few classes that I came to late. He even showed concern for my personal life and talked to me on how to balance work and school.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
YES! His class is easy going, inspirational and your drawing skills will improve a lot!
yes, you will learn a lot in his class and these are skills that will benifits you
Yes. He really encourages people to try their best.
Yes, because his knowledge and experiences has always helped students fix their problem with regards to the lesson.
I would recommend him to other students if they are interested in taking art courses because he really knows the art industry, he has a lot of experience, and he's a good teacher.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
His class inspired me to take advantage of my skills and possibly get a masters in Animation or fine arts.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He knows the subject very well!
when you are in Russell class you can leaarn so much in he class and the way he teach arts.
He gave good advice with drawing techniques when I needed help.
He always giving examples to the student and that helps a lot in drawing.
He encourages everyone to do their best. He constantly reminds us that everyone is different and everyone had a different starting point. He gives us demos if we need help, which in return, expands our skill set. He shows a lot of concerns if people skip out on class because they are missing important lessons and assignments. He grades fairly on attendance and assignments.
Good personality and dedication
very down to earth guy. you can also tell he loved the subject he is teaching. he has a very strong passion for it.
He is kind
Draws very well. Has very good fundamentals in drawing
knows area well
His demonstrations were excellent, because he has great skills.
His skill in the field, his depersonalize experiences as an artist, and his patience and encouragement.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Keep teach Arts
None
More practice and teach more drawing skills.
None, he is doing a great job.
to get different types of seats because those things we sit on makes my back and posterior hurt.
I think russel should spend more time teaching more techniques
I wish he wouldn't deduct points from our overall grade if we were absent, but absent for good reason. If I was deathly sick or had a family emergency, I really don't think he should deduct our grade for something we couldn't foresee.
None
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
It like one time in class i was have hard time with one of the draw he help me out .How did is help studenrt by tell too them tell them what way to make the draw better and help them .
He'd always encourage students to come to class on time every time. He made sure everyone turned in all their assignments.
Student can email him any time if they have question or ask him how to finish the work better.
Tells us office hours and talks with individuals who approach him. He doesn't beat around the bush, he tells everyone that missing assignments and missing class will hurt your grade. He doesn't care much about how detailed your art is or how poor your art is. He pays more attention to your attempts and builds from there. Meaning he takes what you give him and gives you constructive advice in order to make improvements.
By reminding them to catch up and turn in late homework for at least some credit
he was very down to earth and personable. so he was easy to approach and talk to.
He talks to students
Felt like there wasn't to much concern
He gave us individual attention specific to our work, gave lots of demonstration, and showed us plenty off examples.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes he is like a sensei
yes. Becaue you can learn about art in he class . than you can learn in other class .
Yes. As an instructor Mr.Sunabe was very understandable when teaching everyone new techniques and gave advice on how to improve when he see people struggling. Overall good class and great teacher.
Yes, he let student work as far as they can, then give them advice, it is a good way of teaching.
OF COURSE, This guy knows what he is talking about. He isn't one of those mean teachers, but just because he is nice doesn't guarantee an A. You have to put in the effort for homework and class. Show up everyday and don't skip out. The more you improve and practice the better off you will be. People who skip class will fall behind in techniques.
I would because of the above-mentioned strengths and because he is a very skilled artist
i would. he is a great teacher and he does in fact listen to students.
Yes if you get what he saying you will be able to draw very well after te semester
he knows what he's talking about, and demonstrates drawing well
Yes, I'm international, but his explanations were clear and easy to understand.
Yes, he knows what he's talking about and when I look back on things I've drawn prior to his class and compare them to what I can draw now, my progress is evident.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
thank you so much for teach my arts and helpl me with so of the draw like with face and hand and feet .
I bought some of the drawing material like the sanguine and I did not have a chance to use it in class.
Its a shame i won't have him as a teacher next semester because i have to get required credits to get into the New Media Program. But, it was definitely a great semester and it was fun. Maybe in the near future i will attend another one of his classes. Great guy to talk to, gives great advice, is willing to guide you to your goals.
He puts on great music that gives artsy atmosphere :)
he is a cool cat.
He is good
Passionate about what he does, laid back and approachable.

He is very down to earth and personal and easy to talk to. I had no wall to approach him to question anything. He is also genuine and kind. I am very grateful that he was understanding and still kind despite being unable to attend class for 3 weeks in February for personal reasons. His passion for art is very inspiring and encouraging. I was very much encouraged and inspired to study more of art by listening to his lecture/talking. He teaches us not only to pursue art but also important life lessons.
Knows his subject area very well, very caring, and just very personable.
He cares, and shows intrest in students works. He help by spending his time to point out weakness and strengths of a work.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
none.
Style of teaching can be framed more. Instead of being flexible and go on the flow, it can have more structure: more fixed lecture time, use of video or other media to explain techniques more clearly or show examples of painting, etc. But his personal teaching and advice is very good. He gives attention to each student individually one at a time, teaching this way is also good. Syllabus needs to be revised. It is helpful to tell approximate material costs so that students can expect how much expenses needed. I was actually shocked at how expensive materials were, didn't know much about it. Class schedule could be added, too.
None.
None, his class moved at a smooth pace and worked well.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
speaks with every student individually according to their skill level.
He made him accessible always.
He first would take the time to know each students strengths and weaknesses and work with that.
He would spend the time to explain how to fix a problem, by demonstrating and giving examples. He also encourages students to work hard. Which is very supportive.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, he is very easy going and an excellent artist.
I would recommend him to people who are like him - down to earth, kind, and encouraging. They will get along with him very much. However, I would probably not recommend to those who are more motivated or task-oriented. They might want more challenges or assignments to do, more strictness, as they want to push themselves more.
I would definitely recommend him to other students for the reasons stated above.
Yes, a student can learn how paint in a step by step process. I believe any student can enjoy his class, and find interest in oil painting.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Probably the most interesting professor I've ever studied under.
He is a wonderful art professor!!
Overall a great teacher, had a wonderful semester with him and his class.
18. Other comments:
Most of his clothes I'm pretty sure he's had for at least 20 years, but he's and artist which makes it okay.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Russell is an amazing artist and his teaching style is relaxed which helps students not be pressured into rushing things
Russell's strengths is the use of experienced drawings in critical animation of the human figure.
russel has a vast knowledge of the figure as well as successful techniques that he has combined into a stepped approach for building well executed figure studies.
His passion for the subject he teaches.
He knows the matirial well, and is willing to help students.
he compliments the students drawing or tell them what they are doing wrong and he would also change places with the student and draw a little in there place instructing us how to do this or that
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I only suggest that Russell could e-mail his students with feedback on the assignments/homeworks to save class time
I suggest some time and practice on the beginning structures of the human body.
The process seemed slow, it was about 6 weeks into the semester till we finally got a model, I think we should have a model much more early in the semester. It was a little disappointing when some models didn't show up. I felt the class room was crowded, and Russell wouldn't get around the whole class to help more students.
try to make it more interesting
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He showed concerns about our strengths and weakness in the level of shading and tones of the figure. Less control on charcoal pencil.
Yes.
He would bring in aricles or show sketches that would help the students. He like to provide good examples for us to look by. And is always willing to help.
i guess
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would recommend students to take his class if they want to get into animation and learn about drawing the human figure professionally.
yes, without a doubt. anyone, from extreme beginner to experienced laymen, will benefit tremendously from taking russel's classes. sharpen your charcoal and get ready to draw, because it's not an easy road, but well worth the effort.
Yes, he is a good teacher and knows his material well. The way he tought us about the construct lines were very helpfull. He worked around everyones level of drawing, but pushed people to become better. His was a great class and I'm sure people will enjoy and learn from it.
i guess
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Please be clear on the classwork on how many figures are we drawing and be loud and clear on the homework so that we don't go through a confusion about the number of drawing we need to finish.
russel has an innate ability to identify each students level of skill and guide them individually toward self achievement and eventually success.
nothing
