13. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Need to divide the topic evenly. I mean, I am sorry to say but why is it that you have to cover a lot in just one lecture? Like a 100 pages in just one lecture? Why not summarize and explain only what we needed to know. Not word by word.
Need to correction for the exams some of questions are not what we learned from this class. Improve questions better and better answer for the exams. More handouts and notes for the class need.
Everything William Smith taught was useful in a lot of ways and the only thing I would maybe improve is to make more homework and classwork turning in type of work. This would make student interact in the class and make sure there on track and want to learn instead of just listening to professor William Smith lecture that way he knows and we know where we struggle in his class.
Do not allow other students to take the exam up to a week later than the students that took it on the assigned day. They have way more time to study and it's not fair. Slow down when lecturing. Manage time wisely. Cramming things and going over them so quickly at the complete end when he runs out of time and everyone is all packed and ready to go.
Needs to plan out lecture, doesn't plan what he's going to say according to the power points most of the time. Although he is very knowledgeable, there are some areas where he questions what he's teaching. Needs to be more concise: sometimes repeats himself, would be best if he just got to the point. Engage the students throughout lecture not just at the end. Incorporate questions that students can relate to..."Do you ever wonder why the waves are big in the winter time on the north shore?," "Where do you think sand comes from?" Asking questions that will raise curiosity will be helpful in keeping the students focused on what you're saying. Don't just sit down the entire time! We get bored! If you're not upbeat and constantly moving than we're not upbeat and lose focus. Project your voice. The louder you are, the more inclined we are to listen. Use other means of learning. -Incorporate short clips of educational videos. Ex. Show a short clip of how longline fishing works. Create a study guide that will cover ALL the questions on the exam if you want your students to pass the class. Most questions on your current study guide are very general and it can be overwhelming. If you think there is a question on the exam that a student will not understand, incorporate that question into the study guide.
Make powerpoints and lectures more hands on. Students don't learn much by sitting around and listening.

20. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Just fine.
Good resources what we learned from this class such as videos and powerpoint.
I would suggest that the power points were a great tool only if you had it but for other students I think it was difficult to learn without it.
Exams were very difficult. I had the expectation of passing exams with confidence after hearing the course review but after the first one, I realized what I was getting into. I went to class and did the study guide but it wasn't enough and it left me a little frustrated.
it's very simple to pass. What is taught in class is usually whats on the study guides and tests and if not he gives everyone points to make up for the missed questions.
21. Other comments:
I hope you understand that we are doing this just so you could improve, sir. Too many lectures in one day is just too much for students who have 3 or four courses to take. It's like info overload that is why we could not contain what you are lecturing sometimes. Also, the exams are really hard. You give us Jeopardy's or study guides but you don't really follow it. When you change the wordings, it's too much. The one in the powerpoints and jeopardys are different from the exam. I am sorry but this course is just not what I expected.
Professor Smith is great help and feedback for reaction paper and essay relating to oceanography. So good understanding my need for disability.
Thank you professor William Smith for an opportunity to have extra credit I feel there should be more to give us a better chance for the struggling students to pass your class. But again thank you for a great semester.
He has the potential to become a great teacher. He is very positive and shows genuine concern for all his students. He takes the time to email us personal notes on our progress or how the class as a whole can improve. His experience as a marine biologist was very helpful because I enjoyed the stories he shared with us as it relates to what we're learning and it also shows that he really loves this subject. I really liked jeopardy! It was a great way for students to learn and remember certain concepts.
