15. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?

She was always willing to meet outside of class, even outside her scheduled office hours. She always offered great insight.

Her enthusiasm is off the chart. Professor Gallagher is like the radiant sun shines on all that is around her. We have to wear sun protections to her classes to avoid overheating. Professor Gallagher is inspirational through her vividly shadows. I hope she stays this way for all her future lectures.

Her kindness and willingness to listen to the class as a whole

She is very thorough with her explanations and expectations for assignments The selected readings are not too long to read and are very easy to understand unlike other texts She knows how to provide explanations that are clear and specific

She was always willing to help us out and was very quick to respond to emails. She was always willing to help us get deeper into the material.

She's very positive and encouraging and she seems to genuinely care about the things she talks about.

I thought her enthusiasm for the course definitely helped me enjoy being in class. The course material, while challenging, allowed me to think critically as well as relate to other Women's Studies courses I've taken before. I enjoyed class discussion and interacting with Brianne as well as the other students. Sometimes I had trouble getting through the reading, but Brianne always explained the themes and certain complicated elements of every assignment, which helped me a lot.

She is always available to answeer questions, and she gave me guidance for my group presentation.

I found that Brianne is definitely one of the most helpful professors, and the most receptive and embracing of students' ideas, interpretations and analyses of course material.

She knew the subject well as well as her enthusiasm about topics discussed.

The class discussions were very helpful and thought provoking. There was a good selection of readings as well; I particularly enjoyed Water Ghosts.

I liked how we could all bounce off of each other's ideas instead of being restricted to just one topic when we were doing group discussions.

Perhaps, along with the student-led discussions, the people leading the discussion should take notes and then submit them to be posted them on laulima so that the class can refer back to them. This may be helpful for refreshing our memories when it comes to writing the midterm and final essays.

Class rooms with round tables designed for group discussions would be nice.

I think a couple more videos would be helpful. Especially if they were a little more recent

Maybe not so much complex readings those were often distracting and hard to understand though it challenged our minds, at times it was hard to really focus on the readings because they were so complex.

Perhaps more media material could be interesting for the course, considering the themes we've discussed this semester.

More time for mid-terms and finals perhaps? Maybe 3 weeks. I definitely think that 2 weeks is a short period of time, especially if you are trying to schedule an appointment to discuss your thoughts, but have a full schedule.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course. It definitely broadened my perspective and challenged some of my preconceptions, as well as developed my critical thinking skills. Also, I had fun! I would most assuredly recommend this course and this professor to others.

She's really enthusiastic about teaching this topic.

I enjoyed this semester very much! I've already recommended others interested in Women's Studies to take this class.

I really enjoyed this class. The material we read was very interesting and challenged my preconceived notions!

Developing critical thinking skills and developing a feminist perspective

We were exposed to absolutely fantastic feminist readings.

The readings are great--I'm glad they are on the harder side.

I loved the engaging atmosphere Brianne created. She allowed the classroom to be an open space for discussion and interpretation of course material and extended topics. She allowed us to further engage our own individual ideas and thoughts via the biweekly journals. Overall this class was fun and though provoking.

She was very enthusiastic and used a variety of readings. This class was very informative and covered various content. Absolutely loved all aspects of this class and would highly recommend this instructor and class to anyone.

Critical thinking

Everything! the readings and open class discussion were very interesting and stimulated great intellectual conversations.

The readings and class discussions were very valuable. I also enjoyed the reflection journals, great way to critically think of our readings.

This whole class was valuable. Just like the above questions, I can strongly agree with the statements. Professor Gallagher provided readings, which were not hard readings, and the discussions helped broaden the reading. Excellent class. The discussions were the most valuable aspect of this course.

I thought the discussions in class were valuable - Brianne created an environment in which everyone could speak their mind. No one was judged for saying what they believed in. And with that, we were able to discuss aspects of feminist theory that no other class addresses.

she was an amazing professor, and I really enjoyed the class. Her lectures were engaging and interesting, and she really encouraged her students to do there best and think outside of the box.

Discussion and hearing everyone else's ideas

I like that writing was spread throughout the semester.

The flexibility in our papers. We were given a lot of different prompts to choose from which I found helpful.

The different readings used, her enthusiasm in teaching, her encouragement and feedback given to students on assignments.

discussions. I also love how careful Brianne was when reading the things we wrote whether it was our journals or midterms. Really shows how everything you write matters to her and she takes a lot of her time to comment, understand and acknowledge what you wrote. I think she's the only professor I had that did that.

I enjoyed the class discussions. They were always interesting and thought provoking. By asking us questions about the material, we could better understand the theoretical base of the articles that we read.

Fewer mandatory journal entries. We had at least eight typed pages due every two weeks (64 pages total, over the semester?) on each reading, along with a 6+ page midterm, and a 6+ page final. Although I enjoyed doing the journal entries, 70+ pages of written work felt like too much writing for a single undergraduate class!

I would like to have learned more about the "personalities" that have shaped feminist theory and writing. Perhaps more about the development of theory and the challenges within the discipline today.

Brienne is an excellent instructor! She critically engages with students and values their input, and has an unparalleled enthusiasm for her material.

Brianne was so understanding and helpful regarding the death of my grandfather and difficulties I faced during the semester. She is a great instructor.

In my six years here I have never encountered a professor as enthusiastic as Brianne. She did a great job.

Best Women Studies teacher I've had at UH

Brianne is cheerful and a great instructor, I am sad that I am finished with Women's Studies because I would have liked to have taken more with her. All of my WS professors have been amazing and have shaped my life in some way.

Brianne is a great instructor. She is always available via email and always comes to class very bubbly and enthused! Having a great instructor makes learning much more enjoyable!

I appreciate how Brianne Gallagher communicates with her students. She is adept at getting students involved in the subject matter and provoking thoughtful discussions. She is very knowledgeable in her areas of expertise and makes the students feel valued in their contributions during the discussions. Brianne is also well prepared and organized for her classes, and provokes critical thinking, all the while with a sunny disposition.

This is a different type of course (colloquium) so it is mainly attendance that is required, but the course was well-designed with interesting speakers and a variety of topics. Brianne is very bright, communicative, and easy to talk to. She's incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable and I would love to have her as an instructor again.

Perhaps more colloquium options on other days of the week? Or more importantly, having someone film the series so that if you have to miss one, you can still watch it via the WS website and still be included in the discussion.

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?

Everything was pretty great.

The in depth class discussions and the thorough deconstruction of feminist theories and ideologies. The daily journal entries greatly improved my abilities as a writer.

The journaling was good. Made me read the articles.

The reading were interesting and engaging. The class discussions were helpful to break down the large concepts and bring up valid arguments or responses vital to understanding the concepts as a whole. Journals helped to critically think and respond on the articles, and kept students on their feet with as the primary homework assignment. Brianne was very enthusiastic about the course, excited to teach, learn and discuss the readings everyday. She gave positive and critical feedback on journals and assignments that were helpful to dissect the readings. Meetings in her office were helpful to clearing up questions or concerns about the course content. She was an absolute joy in and outside of class.

I loved the class discussion. I felt that we were able to go over a lot of material in a fashionable manner. It was wonderful that everyone felt that they could speak their mind.

I think the aspects that were most valuable in class were the articles that we read along with the lecture and discussion periods.

I absolutely loved this class and the way it was discussion-based.

I found the small group discussions to be most valuable. Since a large majority of the class didn't seem to like to talk out loud, I found people opened up more in the smaller groups and we were better able to process the reading material.

The aspects about this course that were most valuable was hearing my peers views about what we were learning. Reading different feminist material gives you a different look on how the world is perceived by others based upon varying circumstances. Learning these kinds of things made my level of ignorance go down. The reading/discussions make you think about so many things; itÊ»s almost mind blowing.

The aspects of feminist theory I found most valuable was the unit on globalization, particularly when we watched the video on the IMF/World BanK im pact on Jamaica. I also found it fascinating to question what gender is and what constitutes 'male' and 'female'.

Everything this course had to offered was all valuable. The things we touch base were critical to our society today that we have to know and address.

the readings are very interesting, and having the daily journals make it easier to talk about the material if your shy to talk in class.

Brianne is absolutely brilliant and it is honestly amazing to just sit and listen to her lecture or offer up ideas for group discussion whenever there was a silence in the class and people were not participating. She always has something fascinating to say and is extremely thought-provoking. She also fostered incredible discussions and made the class a very comfortable and safe space in which to share personal experiences, which enriched the class as a whole.

Like any course some of the readings were less good than others. Sometimes discussion would flow over from one class to the next, and we would spend too much time on one reading at the expense of another.

Sometimes splitting up into groups was not helpful because people did not do the readings or were too shy to say anything, and there was not enough time for Brianne to get to each group personally (which was an extremely helpful thing when she was able to). I preferred large discussions in which Brianne participated because she always keeps the discussion flowing even when everyone else runs out of ideas, which sometimes happens in small groups.

Thought provoking readings and critical discussions

The grading structure was very good and rewarded students who tried. If you tried it seemed hard to get a bad grade.

I liked the open discussions.

Everything. Brianne makes the entire class. Her energy and excitement reflected the student's response to learn and reflect.

I really enjoyed the lecture and class discussion. These classes illuminated me to the experiences of the professor and my classmates.

It covered so many topics and so many critiques of feminist theory.

I like the discussions that we had in class with the groups, it made it easier for students to talk. I liked the readings, made me think at a different level.

Brianne Gallagher is so intelligent that it is easy for her to hold the attention of the class; her ideas were always so insightful that I loved listening to the lecture portions of the class - it allowed me to reflect and think critically about the material on a deeper level.

I think Brianne's enthusiasm and genuine approachability made all the difference in this class. I didn't always enjoy all of the reading, but I appreciated Brianne's teaching style and interest in everyone's individual thoughts and opinions. It created an environment where anyone could feel free and comfortable to have their own opinion, free from criticism. Even though we had a class that didn't always like to speak up, I could tell Brianne really tried to draw people's thoughts and ideas out of them and that she truly was interested in what those thoughts and ideas were.

I like how we arenÊ»t graded on mastering the material, instead we had just had to understand it and have intelligent thoughts about the material.

I liked doing the journals, because it was a place where i could share my complete thoughts on the subject matter being discussed.

Gendering of labor and globalization

the way brianne was able to relate the material to historical and present day examples, also showing films that related to readings and the class made it very easy to understand concepts as well.

Brianne is just all around an amazing teacher and she has been my favorite instructor during my experience at UH so far (I am a senior). She offered up very interesting course material, and was able to explain it clearly and in a fascinating manner, and she was so enthusiastic that she made everyone smile with her excited hand gestures and general happiness in class. Her demeanor made her class and the discussions fun. In addition to this, she is also simply brilliant and is one of the most articulate people I have ever met. Sometimes in class when she would just be talking about a reading, it sounded like she was drafting a PhD thesis with the way she clearly phrased and connected her ideas, which was really amazing to listen to. All in all she made this course truly enjoyable and was a real joy to be around.

In the future make the journal entries worth more because they do take a considerable amount of time to write and to grade.

Not sure. More foundational reading perhaps. Start with a reading that addresses the evolution of feminism in waves, and maybe a piece that spells out the most common schools of feminist and queer thought?

The discussions shouldn't be so biased in a liberal direction. The class doesn't leave much room for conservatism to be voiced at all.

Having a course reader would be easier and more convenient to the teacher and the student.

I think it was a little hard to write about every journal because some were not something I had feeling about.

less dense readings and the length of the readings

The instructor was actually TOO smart, sometimes, oftentimes she would offer such complex ideas (to the class) that no one seemed to understand what she was saying. This may sound bad, but it would probably be beneficial for the instructor to simplify her ideas for this (undergraduate) level of feminist theory.

I think that journals should be collected every week, not every two weeks.

Since it was a pretty big class and there were lots of discussions, I think it would be best to have an ice breaker before the start class so that all students get to know each other and able to interact well. I think! Or something that makes some students who are a bit uncomfortable speaking to open up. But I also understand that it was a 50minute class that an ice breaker would not be possible.

As stated above, I think that group discussions are helpful but that I wish there were maybe a few less in this class because large group discussion was often so rewarding.

Brianne is awesome.

Brianne Gallagher is an excellent instructor when it comes to openness to students and flexibility. She is a collaborative teacher. I think she finds it difficult to reach students at their basic level sometimes. She would throw out questions that are too complicated or too leading and that would cause slight problems with class discussion.

Overall I think this class brought everything that I have learned over the years together.

The class was great! truly enjoyed myself! She never shot down our ideas and thoughts on different topics. Willing to help on any level. She was passionate and knowledgeable. Would def. take her class again.

Overall, I loved this class and the instructor especially blew me away; her enthusiasm for the material was intoxicating and maintained the attention of all that took her class.

I appreciate the fact that you scheduled appointments with all of us following the midterms. It showed a genuine interest in wanting to discuss our thoughts and get to know us better. It's courses and instructors like this one that make graduating and leaving school so bittersweet. Thank you for a great semester!

Brianne is one of the best professors I have ever had! She is so enthusiastic about the material and not in a irritating way at all.

Over all, I think the instructor did a great job!

Brianne Gallagher is an amazing, fascinating, and engaging teacher and I would recommend her class to anyone, even if they are not a Women's Studies major taking this as a requirement. She has really helped me to contextualize my experiences as a woman better and has helped me to better understand my own thought processes in ways that will help me as a student in the future. I cannot say enough positive things about Brianne as a teacher.
