12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
She is a great Professor!
I like the fact that it was on-line. While it was harder to create the discussion atmosphere, the interested students engaged respectfully.
The instructor. Responded quickly to questions and went our of her way to help explain concepts when needed. Always accessible. Broke down difficult concepts to layman's terms.
Brianne is intelligent and approachable - she conveys enthusiasm along with intellectual depth.
The instructor was extremely engaging and went above and beyond to facilitate online discussions and get me to deeply analyze the material. She would personally email and make recommendations for further reading based on what I wrote in my discussions (such as the privitization of the prison system).
The specific range of subjects we covered. It was a nice change of perception.

14. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I think that there were too many items on the table of contents bar to the left on laulima. If felt like I needed to check everything daily, but half of the areas were unused.
Add some current examples of gender and violence. THis course centered more on historical themes.
Even for an accelerated online course, this was a LOT of reading and a LOT of writing. I believe I wrote an estimated 45 pages over 6 weeks, not including required forum replies to other students. I believe the course load could be cut down and still learn the material to the same degree. In some cases, I would have liked to discuss certain points further but I felt like I barely had enough time to complete the minimum required posting for each topic.

15. Other comments:
Brianne is an excellent teacher. My first on-line course and first women's studies course but she really helped me understand new definitions and concepts. She responds to emails right away and will discuss any topics of the course with you at any time.
Excellent course.
Lots of reading and writing but it was awesome! Great summer course!!
Thanks for a wonderful semester!

15. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Brianne is an excellent teacher. Excellent. She is organized and professional and facilitates discussions effectively. She treats all students with respect, regardless of whether their point of view coincides with hers or not. She was always reachable outside of class.
Brianne was very willing to help in any way.
Brianne is very enthusiastic about teaching and supporting her students. She encourages students to attend her office hours to better understand the readings, particularly before student presentations.
Brianne always tries to affirm any contributions anyone makes. She tries to provide a safe environment in which even shyer people can feel more comfortable about speaking. Brianne makes herself available for questions and help outside of class. She's also eloquent and very enthusiastic about the course.
Always open to talk to if ever having difficulty in course. Very enthusiastic every single day of class and encourages deeper thinking about the material.
Is that she is so enthusiastic about the material discussed. Also that she is always available either during or outside her office hours to meet with students.
What I liked most about Brianne was her willingness to help and her enthusiasm for teaching the subject. Her explanations were always helpful and I feel like she engaged the class in an effective way.
I learned a lot about militarization and gender differences that exist.
Her enthusiasm and passion for the subject. She is also a very positive and approachable instructor; great qualities!
Amazing class! LOVED Brianne and Claryssa ! THey were both highly engaging and understandable.
Brianne encourages students to ask deep, though provoking questions, and is supportive of all student contributions.
She was very enthusiastic and passionate about what she taught. She was able to make everyone participate in a comfortable learning environment.
She explains assignments well and goes into deep discussion so we can have a better understanding of the material.
Very open to help and encourages interaction between students, which is good.
extremely knwoeldable, very kind, passsionate, helpful, sweet, and caring pr professor. we need more people like her in our world.
Brianne really made an effort to always have an open door for whoever needed help with anything relating to the course. She was just about always available to discusse course readings, assignments, or anything else that may relate to the course. This was very helpful and contributed to making POLS 339 a wonderful course that seemed to just fly by. I also enjoyed our large class discussions very much. The large circle we sat in was unique to this class. It really help facilitate discussion, and encourage everyone to speak.
16. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Nothing, she was great.
Brianne is very nice and I believe some students may have misinterpreted niceness for weakness, which led to lack of student participation. About mid-semester, Brianne had us write a paragraph to a page about the assigned reading...it was a kind of free-write so we could list the main points, theories/constructs that were particularly interesting, or ask questions. I believe this was an effective approach to making students accountable for the reading, which naturally resulted in an increase in class participation/discussion.
No problems
Can't think of anything.
I can't think of anything that she wasn't helpful about - she rocked!
Nothing. She was great!
everything was good, she is a great professor
Taking the survey? No, in all honesty I hate when instructors asked this question. To be honest, I cannot think of something not valuable about this course. I suppose she could have taken more steps to make sure everyone completed the readings before class, but this is a 300 level college course, and that is not her job. However, some discussions could have run smoother had the whole class completed the reading prior to the start of class.

20. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Presentations and discussions
I really enjoyed meetings with Brianne at office hours because post-meetings many "light bulbs" went off....ideas for class presentations inside and outside of her class. She served as a very good resource for future projects as well. I love presenting so one of the best aspects of the course was the group presentation. It was nice and beneficial that the first 5 minutes of class was dedicated to announcements about on-campus events/colloquiums related to women's studies.
I learned a lot from the assigned readings. Sometimes it was difficult for me to speak during discussions, but I think the discussions were invaluable because sometimes students brought up points that I hadn't considered. I liked that the curriculum included writings from nonwhite feminist scholars.
Range of readings
While at first a bit daunting the round table that the class works in, as well as the short group discussions are helpful in stimulating thought as well as familiarity between peers.
I loved all the class discussions that we participated in.
The articles in the gender and globalization book.
When I was in group discussions with fellow classmates who had all done the readings and contributed to a conversation that truly felt like "feminist theory".
I really enjoyed our discussions and small group activities.
I really enjoyed all of the readings. There was a good variety and I found them all thought provoking.
I liked getting into a large circle as a class and hear what other students had to say and everyones opinions and thoughts on the readings
I liked the variety of books and texts we read.
the readings were very interesting
I really enjoyed the student led discussions. This was a unique way to engage every student into the course (even if that particular students did not participate all whole lot prior).

22. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
Maintain having a free-write at the beginning of each class as a way to take attendance and have better class discussion.
Create more ties on how material can contribute to students everyday lives to garner enthusiasm or expanding to include more resources to liven up course
The presentation style go be presented different. Instead, of having a group do a long presentation on the topics you could have individuals do shorter presentations.
Since this is a "theory" class, I think the class would benefit from some sort of way to enforce/regulate students reading prior to coming to class. Too often was did I find myself in a group were at least one or two and at times neither of my group members had done the reading. Obviously those were not productive discussions. Perhaps it could also be useful to have a discussion in the beginning of the semester about "what does it mean to study theory" to help structure some of the expectations for the course and the semester. I also found student laptop and cell phone use disruptive and rude, especially since there was Facebook on the screens more often than the assigned reading. I moved to the front part way into the semester so I didn't have to deal with "glancing" on screens. These are just suggestions about improving the course based on my experience! Since I am a graduate student, perhaps I have different expectations, so please I do not mean to sound "judging" or "critical". I had a great time in the class and I learned a lot =)
Focus on one reading a week instead of two so we can thoroughly go over it
There should be a better structure to get students to interact. Maybe make an outline or something so people can follow and reply back.
less pages in our research paper, 6-7 is too much..
This question is quite similar question 16. The only thing I can think of is had everyone in the class read the readings prior to the start of class. But just because those select few did not get all they could have from the course, does not mean it wasn't still a great course. Still, it would have been nice to hear more from from the select few that shared very little or not at all.
23. Other comments:
Sometimes I have a hard time with analysis, but this course gave me more practice in it. This will be beneficial to me later.
None
I think our teacher is a natural teacher. Everything she explained and questions she made on the spot were thought provoking and she made me walk out of class everyday feeling like i really learned something as well as enjoyed learning it! one of the best teachers I've had
Your really passionate and I really enjoyed your course.
less pages for the research paper, 6-7 pages is too much!
Brianne was a great instructor who led a great class. She has a bright career as a professor someplace ahead of her.

15. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Her kindness and willingness to listen to the class as a whole
She was always willing to meet outside of class, even outside her scheduled office hours. She always offered great insight.
Her enthusiasm is off the chart. Professor Gallagher is like the radiant sun shines on all that is around her. We have to wear sun protections to her classes to avoid overheating. Professor Gallagher is inspirational through her vividly shadows. I hope she stays this way for all her future lectures.
She is very thorough with her explanations and expectations for assignments The selected readings are not too long to read and are very easy to understand unlike other texts She knows how to provide explanations that are clear and specific
She was always willing to help us out and was very quick to respond to emails. She was always willing to help us get deeper into the material.
Intelligent, engaging, helpful
I thought her enthusiasm for the course definitely helped me enjoy being in class. The course material, while challenging, allowed me to think critically as well as relate to other Women's Studies courses I've taken before. I enjoyed class discussion and interacting with Brianne as well as the other students. Sometimes I had trouble getting through the reading, but Brianne always explained the themes and certain complicated elements of every assignment, which helped me a lot.
She knew the subject well as well as her enthusiasm about topics discussed.
I found that Brianne is definitely one of the most helpful professors, and the most receptive and embracing of students' ideas, interpretations and analyses of course material.
She is always available to answeer questions, and she gave me guidance for my group presentation.
She's very positive and encouraging and she seems to genuinely care about the things she talks about.
16. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
The books were just difficult to get a hold of
Untimely responses to emails (sometimes)
Hmmm....use of really really big words lol

The class discussions
The class discussions were very helpful and thought provoking. There was a good selection of readings as well; I particularly enjoyed Water Ghosts.
Well informed professor with great character demonstrating great professionalism with great energy.
Easy to read texts, movies, take home exams, student presentations, discussion style format
I liked how we could all bounce off of each other's ideas instead of being restricted to just one topic when we were doing group discussions.

I enjoyed being challenged every class, and being able to engage on a personal and critical levee.
I enjoyed class discussions.
Student-led presentations definitely drew out juicy discussion!
Having a varitey of essays/material made the class more interesting!

I think a couple more videos would be helpful. Especially if they were a little more recent
Perhaps, along with the student-led discussions, the people leading the discussion should take notes and then submit them to be posted them on laulima so that the class can refer back to them. This may be helpful for refreshing our memories when it comes to writing the midterm and final essays.
Class rooms with round tables designed for group discussions would be nice.
Maybe not so much complex readings those were often distracting and hard to understand though it challenged our minds, at times it was hard to really focus on the readings because they were so complex.
Lots of books, fairly expensive
Perhaps more media material could be interesting for the course, considering the themes we've discussed this semester.
More time for mid-terms and finals perhaps? Maybe 3 weeks. I definitely think that 2 weeks is a short period of time, especially if you are trying to schedule an appointment to discuss your thoughts, but have a full schedule.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course. It definitely broadened my perspective and challenged some of my preconceptions, as well as developed my critical thinking skills. Also, I had fun! I would most assuredly recommend this course and this professor to others.
She's really enthusiastic about teaching this topic.
I enjoyed this semester very much! I've already recommended others interested in Women's Studies to take this class.

class discussions
We were exposed to absolutely fantastic feminist readings.
Developing critical thinking skills and developing a feminist perspective
I loved the engaging atmosphere Brianne created. She allowed the classroom to be an open space for discussion and interpretation of course material and extended topics. She allowed us to further engage our own individual ideas and thoughts via the biweekly journals. Overall this class was fun and though provoking.
The readings are great--I'm glad they are on the harder side.
Critical thinking
I really enjoyed this class. The material we read was very interesting and challenged my preconceived notions!
She was very enthusiastic and used a variety of readings. This class was very informative and covered various content. Absolutely loved all aspects of this class and would highly recommend this instructor and class to anyone.
she was an amazing professor, and I really enjoyed the class. Her lectures were engaging and interesting, and she really encouraged her students to do there best and think outside of the box.
I thought the discussions in class were valuable - Brianne created an environment in which everyone could speak their mind. No one was judged for saying what they believed in. And with that, we were able to discuss aspects of feminist theory that no other class addresses.
This whole class was valuable. Just like the above questions, I can strongly agree with the statements. Professor Gallagher provided readings, which were not hard readings, and the discussions helped broaden the reading. Excellent class. The discussions were the most valuable aspect of this course.
The readings and class discussions were very valuable. I also enjoyed the reflection journals, great way to critically think of our readings.
Everything! the readings and open class discussion were very interesting and stimulated great intellectual conversations.

films
The flexibility in our papers. We were given a lot of different prompts to choose from which I found helpful.
Discussion and hearing everyone else's ideas
I like that writing was spread throughout the semester.
films, readings
The different readings used, her enthusiasm in teaching, her encouragement and feedback given to students on assignments.
I enjoyed the class discussions. They were always interesting and thought provoking. By asking us questions about the material, we could better understand the theoretical base of the articles that we read.
discussions. I also love how careful Brianne was when reading the things we wrote whether it was our journals or midterms. Really shows how everything you write matters to her and she takes a lot of her time to comment, understand and acknowledge what you wrote. I think she's the only professor I had that did that.
Everything, from the documentaries to the journal writing to her ways of teaching.
The assigned readings were great!
The discussions really improved my understanding of the readings.

no improvements
Handouts are easier then trying to look for articles online
Fewer mandatory journal entries. We had at least eight typed pages due every two weeks (64 pages total, over the semester?) on each reading, along with a 6+ page midterm, and a 6+ page final. Although I enjoyed doing the journal entries, 70+ pages of written work felt like too much writing for a single undergraduate class!
I would like to have learned more about the "personalities" that have shaped feminist theory and writing. Perhaps more about the development of theory and the challenges within the discipline today.
If the people in class did the readings it would help.. There were only 6 people or so that seemed to do it which was unfortunate.
None, this class was very enjoyable. I encourage her to keep doing what she's doing.
Nothing should be changed. I think that it is imposible to improve upon an already wonderful class. But ice cream would be nice.

Best Women Studies teacher I've had at UH
Brienne is an excellent instructor! She critically engages with students and values their input, and has an unparalleled enthusiasm for her material.
In my six years here I have never encountered a professor as enthusiastic as Brianne. She did a great job.
Brianne is cheerful and a great instructor, I am sad that I am finished with Women's Studies because I would have liked to have taken more with her. All of my WS professors have been amazing and have shaped my life in some way.
as my first womens studies class, i loved it.

This is a different type of course (colloquium) so it is mainly attendance that is required, but the course was well-designed with interesting speakers and a variety of topics. Brianne is very bright, communicative, and easy to talk to. She's incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable and I would love to have her as an instructor again.
I appreciate how Brianne Gallagher communicates with her students. She is adept at getting students involved in the subject matter and provoking thoughtful discussions. She is very knowledgeable in her areas of expertise and makes the students feel valued in their contributions during the discussions. The in depth class discussions and the thorough deconstruction of feminist theories and ideologies. The daily journal entries greatly improved my abilities as a writer.
Everything was pretty great.
class discussions
The journaling was good. Made me read the articles.
Brianne is absolutely brilliant and it is honestly amazing to just sit and listen to her lecture or offer up ideas for group discussion whenever there was a silence in the class and people were not participating. She always has something fascinating to say and is extremely thought-provoking. She also fostered incredible discussions and made the class a very comfortable and safe space in which to share personal experiences, which enriched the class as a whole.
Class discussions, the readings, brianne knowlegde of the subject
I loved the class discussion. I felt that we were able to go over a lot of material in a fashionable manner. It was wonderful that everyone felt that they could speak their mind.
the readings are very interesting, and having the daily journals make it easier to talk about the material if your shy to talk in class.
I absolutely loved this class and the way it was discussion-based.
The reading were interesting and engaging. The class discussions were helpful to break down the large concepts and bring up valid arguments or responses vital to understanding the concepts as a whole. Journals helped to critically think and respond on the articles, and kept students on their feet with as the primary homework assignment. Brianne was very enthusiastic about the course, excited to teach, learn and discuss the readings everyday. She gave positive and critical feedback on journals and assignments that were helpful to dissect the readings. Meetings in her office were helpful to clearing up questions or concerns about the course content. She was an absolute joy in and outside of class.
Everything this course had to offered was all valuable. The things we touch base were critical to our society today that we have to know and address.
How to view the world through the eyes of a feminist.
The readings and small group discussion.
The aspects of feminist theory I found most valuable was the unit on globalization, particularly when we watched the video on the IMF/World BanK im pact on Jamaica. I also found it fascinating to question what gender is and what constitutes 'male' and 'female'.
The aspects about this course that were most valuable was hearing my peers views about what we were learning. Reading different feminist material gives you a different look on how the world is perceived by others based upon varying circumstances. Learning these kinds of things made my level of ignorance go down. The reading/discussions make you think about so many things; itʻs almost mind blowing.
I found the small group discussions to be most valuable. Since a large majority of the class didn't seem to like to talk out loud, I found people opened up more in the smaller groups and we were better able to process the reading material.
I think the aspects that were most valuable in class were the articles that we read along with the lecture and discussion periods.
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?

A couple of classmates? But that's not Brianne's fault.
journal entries
Like any course some of the readings were less good than others. Sometimes discussion would flow over from one class to the next, and we would spend too much time on one reading at the expense of another.
Sometimes splitting up into groups was not helpful because people did not do the readings or were too shy to say anything, and there was not enough time for Brianne to get to each group personally (which was an extremely helpful thing when she was able to). I preferred large discussions in which Brianne participated because she always keeps the discussion flowing even when everyone else runs out of ideas, which sometimes happens in small groups.

Brianne is just all around an amazing teacher and she has been my favorite instructor during my experience at UH so far (I am a senior). She offered up very interesting course material, and was able to explain it clearly and in a fascinating manner, and she was so enthusiastic that she made everyone smile with her excited hand gestures and general happiness in class. Her demeanor made her class and the discussions fun. In addition to this, she is also simply brilliant and is one of the most articulate people I have ever met. Sometimes in class when she would just be talking about a reading, it sounded like she was drafting a PhD thesis with the way she clearly phrased and connected her ideas, which was really amazing to listen to. All in all she made this course truly enjoyable and was a real joy to be around.
I like the discussions that we had in class with the groups, it made it easier for students to talk. I liked the readings, made me think at a different level.
I like Brianne, she was awesome!
the way brianne was able to relate the material to historical and present day examples, also showing films that related to readings and the class made it very easy to understand concepts as well.
Everything. Brianne makes the entire class. Her energy and excitement reflected the student's response to learn and reflect.
Gendering of labor and globalization
It covered so many topics and so many critiques of feminist theory.
Brianne Gallagher is so intelligent that it is easy for her to hold the attention of the class; her ideas were always so insightful that I loved listening to the lecture portions of the class - it allowed me to reflect and think critically about the material on a deeper level.
I liked doing the journals, because it was a place where i could share my complete thoughts on the subject matter being discussed.
I like how we arenʻt graded on mastering the material, instead we had just had to understand it and have intelligent thoughts about the material.
I think Brianne's enthusiasm and genuine approachability made all the difference in this class. I didn't always enjoy all of the reading, but I appreciated Brianne's teaching style and interest in everyone's individual thoughts and opinions. It created an environment where anyone could feel free and comfortable to have their own opinion, free from criticism. Even though we had a class that didn't always like to speak up, I could tell Brianne really tried to draw people's thoughts and ideas out of them and that she truly was interested in what those thoughts and ideas were.
I really enjoyed the lecture and class discussion. These classes illuminated me to the experiences of the professor and my classmates.

In the future make the journal entries worth more because they do take a considerable amount of time to write and to grade.
Fewer group discussions... :p
The discussions shouldn't be so biased in a liberal direction. The class doesn't leave much room for conservatism to be voiced at all.
Not sure. More foundational reading perhaps. Start with a reading that addresses the evolution of feminism in waves, and maybe a piece that spells out the most common schools of feminist and queer thought?
As stated above, I think that group discussions are helpful but that I wish there were maybe a few less in this class because large group discussion was often so rewarding.
less dense readings and the length of the readings
I think it was a little hard to write about every journal because some were not something I had feeling about.

Having a course reader would be easier and more convenient to the teacher and the student.
Since it was a pretty big class and there were lots of discussions, I think it would be best to have an ice breaker before the start class so that all students get to know each other and able to interact well. I think! Or something that makes some students who are a bit uncomfortable speaking to open up. But I also understand that it was a 50minute class that an ice breaker would not be possible.
The instructor was actually TOO smart, sometimes, oftentimes she would offer such complex ideas (to the class) that no one seemed to understand what she was saying. This may sound bad, but it would probably be beneficial for the instructor to simplify her ideas for this (undergraduate) level of feminist theory.
I think that journals should be collected every week, not every two weeks.
23. Other comments:
Brianne is awesome.
Brianne Gallagher is an excellent instructor when it comes to openness to students and flexibility. She is a collaborative teacher. I think she finds it difficult to reach students at their basic level sometimes. She would throw out questions that are too complicated or too leading and that would cause slight problems with class discussion.
Brianne Gallagher is an amazing, fascinating, and engaging teacher and I would recommend her class to anyone, even if they are not a Women's Studies major taking this as a requirement. She has really helped me to contextualize my experiences as a woman better and has helped me to better understand my own thought processes in ways that will help me as a student in the future. I cannot say enough positive things about Brianne as a teacher.
The class was great! truly enjoyed myself! She never shot down our ideas and thoughts on different topics. Willing to help on any level. She was passionate and knowledgeable. Would def. take her class again.
Overall I think this class brought everything that I have learned over the years together.
Over all, I think the instructor did a great job!
Overall, I loved this class and the instructor especially blew me away; her enthusiasm for the material was intoxicating and maintained the attention of all that took her class.
Brianne is one of the best professors I have ever had! She is so enthusiastic about the material and not in a irritating way at all.
I appreciate the fact that you scheduled appointments with all of us following the midterms. It showed a genuine interest in wanting to discuss our thoughts and get to know us better. It's courses and instructors like this one that make graduating and leaving school so bittersweet. Thank you for a great semester!
