Professor Leung is very knowledgeable and cares about his student's learning
Excellent
Great professor with a fair amount of work involved in order to learn the subject material.
He was very knowledgeable and very approachable. He was able to convey the information well.

15. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Very useful class.
Challenging course. Things learned in class can easily be applied to the real world for a variety of things. Tools learned from this course will be useful when making economic decisions in the future.
Many topics were covered and the book was very detailed although some of the material was difficult to understand.
a good breadth course to take since it shows the student a lot about economic secrets like compounding tax.
The course is very useful to any engineering major
Excellent
Learned a lot. I'm surprised the other students were not going to take their FE soon when asked by the Professor. Going through FE type exam questions would have been beneficial to those going to take the test. Homework was helpful and supplemented the course and lectures well. Presenting once or twice in the semester was a good way to motivate students to come to class and at least attempt the work.
I would recommend this class to other students. It made me more conscientious about economics in both my personal life and in the real world.
16. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
Clearer, less dense, slower slides. Slow down on important, heavy topics. Spend less time on going over solutions (half hour is a lot when there's so much material to cover for the day); instead maybe collect homework from everyone every time and return with corrections and solutions promptly.
It would be nice to have shorten version of ppt since only some slides are covered during the lecture.
Posting the book solutions of homework problems will help. Not going through the topics too quickly will help with understanding.
This course can improve by having it's own UH Manoa course textbook containing only the important material that will be covered in class.
I'm not a fan of power point lectures. Content is covered a little too fast.
The class was fair. I would have liked to have examples of a project.
17. Other comments:
I enjoyed the relevant jokes sometimes told in the beginning of class.

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Having students work together for homework assignments was very helpful.
Almost everything covered in this class were valuable to me. I am really interested in the practical aspect of the course.
The course was set up to provide an incentive to students to continuously participate and actively keep up with the material themselves. This was achieved by the frequent homework due dates as well as the presentations, which only added to the overall value of the class. The material itself is strong but limited in many aspects that require things beyond this class for real world applications, but I felt this was taught and presented to us in our final project, if it hadn't been noticed earlier. The final project covered what would have been a huge detrimental hole in the understanding of the material in that for the most part up until the final project, data, supply and demand functions were given. However obtaining the data in its correct form an deriving supply and demand functions as well as application of other theories should have made us realize that there's still much to be considered after this class.
I originally thought that the final project was a major pain, but that's not the case anymore. After completing the project, I found that I rather quite enjoyed it. It was the only real interactive part of the class for me, and I value the things that I was able to take away from my project.
final group project
Weekly assignments, though time intensive, important to me because they forced me to do the problems. Through doing the problems, I learned ways to approach situations in a way that I would have not been exposed to if I had not taken this class.
I thought that this course was helpful in trying to solve optimization problems and real life applications. I thought learning how to use excel and excel solver platform is the most valuable taken away from this class due to how in the business world, knowledge of excel is a must.
learning how to use spreadsheet and its applications
Group based homework and final paper was helpful for easy learning
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The study guide for the exam would be more helpful if it was more like the exam.
The least valuable part was the difficult mathematics concept.
The daily power point presentations have much to be desired. Excel spreadsheets displayed in class makes it hard to follow due to the UI and nature of Excel. Perhaps a computer lab, or a requirement of a computer should be made as well as some form of screen sharing or project collaboration. The office suit 2013 utilizes cloud collaboration, however I am unsure if it allows simultaneous viewing and editing of spreadsheets and whether or not it could sustain a class of 20-40 users simultaneously. If I were to offer a immediate solution, I would quickly implement screen sharing option, such as either live streaming the desktop being used in the presentation or something more private such as VNC's or mobile streamers such as Splashtop's services.
I wish lecture had been more interactive.
boring lectures
I feel like we could spend weeks more on each subject. Every technique that we learned was applied to one case but there are so many others that could also be interesting.

24. Other comments:
Overall, the professor is an intelligent person, however it would have been more beneficial if he slowed things down to make sure all the students really understood instead of assuming we did. It was at times hard to understand what he wanted us to do which made this class more self-directed than anything else. I recognize that this class may be helpful in the future and this was the reason why it was so difficult, but it was hard as someone who is not familiar with this course.
Very practical course for learning spreadsheet modeling for business.
He is willing to meet us in office hour but his explanation is so bad when I asked question of hw or his lecture. It is so hard to understand. The content of his class is interesting.
The examinations don't really add much to the course. If anything, they are irrelevant and ineffective in testing one's understanding and applicability of the test. If I were to make a suggestion, I would weigh classic exams much lower or get rid of them all together and substitute with more projects and homework-like problems. Those two are the most valuable aspects in terms of work load in the class and simulate how real world application would be like, which already incorporates understanding of the class material.
- a study guide that was more relevant to the materials being tested on, if not then just a list so students can review everything (I think the study guide provided threw off students who only went by that, including myself) - a computer lab! I learn by doing, and I think this is just one of those classes that needs to be hands on and needs a computer lab for students to learn in class while going along with the instructor or something; I find ppt lectures to be boring and un-motivating
I appreciate how straight-forward the exams were...
I think that there is quite a lot of material, yet all useful. I also think professor Leung is an excellent professor.
This is a very tough class. The teacher was very smart and made the class fun with a little jokes here and there.
It was a tough concept to grasp so maybe more in depth explanations of how to do certain problem would be helpful for the future

Dr. Leung is an excellent professor. His handouts are well-organized and clear, also his lectures are wonderful with pretty delivery.

I believe this course will help me in my career later on
It's easy so long as you keep up with your work.
Useful course.
This is a pretty good course with the most professional professor who really cares of his students' concerns.
- Many additional economic concepts to understand
Interesting and very useful course! Concepts show up everywhere.
although it was a challenge, it was a well organized and structured course.
Good
Great.
I was generally satisfied with the course. The material was explained well by Ping Sun.
16. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
More feedback on the homework. More student presentations.
Improve the slides and the examples that are supposed to help teach us the topics
Maybe slow down a bit. There's a lot of material to cover and it's hard to keep up during class.
It's a perfect course that I took, no need to change, so far so good.
Full, complete powerpoints should be reviewed. It was difficult to fill in some of the blanks, even using the book.
Course could be slowed down a little, it does move quickly. Also, more time could be taken on tougher subjects, and move faster through simpler things.
One improvement is maybe going through lecture slides a little slower. Sometimes it is overwhelming to have seen 5 slides in less than a minute and not be able to follow afterwards.
Make the online slides and reading due before class and just work on problems and questions in class
Maybe do some quizzes. Also we could've done maybe another exam. Instead of 2 midterms, 3 would be better because there are a lot of things to learn. Splitting it up more would help a lot.
Maybe more outlines/guidance on what is expected from the final project? My group and I weren't entirely sure what direction to take the project.
17. Other comments:
I would like to recommend my friends and schoolmates to take CEE405 from this professor.

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Homework problems and examples.
all of it
Real life applications
First 4 weeks and last 4 weeks
All the content
The whole course was very valuable, and I couldn't say which aspect was "less" valuable than the other.
Most practically applicable class I've taken.
All of the techniques and models we learned about will definitely be useful in the future.
I think the most valuable was learning the different formulas and their purpose for the excel spreadsheet.
What an amazing course! All was useful.
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Having to attempt the homework as a team. Teamwork is difficult when you live far away from your partner.
Powerpoints not effective without being in a computer lab. The combination of both is needed for direct application of information given.
No such thing
None
Of everything the only thing that stood out were the midterm questions. Some weren't clear. Because we're so used to using excel to program, having us write down what we would have typed in excel is a pretty bad way to test our knowledge of the course. I think all the midterms should be just like the finals, because that would truly gauge how much we've learned. In my opinion the midterms were a complete waste of time because that's not how we would normally code anything in excel. What the midterms did well was test our analytical skills, but everything related to "what formula goes here" was a pretty bad choice in my opinion, as in a normal problem we would have just wrote it in, and if it was wrong excel would immediately notify us and we'd fix it.
The lectures are pretty much useless unless you have read the chapter and practiced the model. Making sure students read the chapter and at least give the model a try will make them get a lot more out of the class.
everything was valuable knowledge because you would need to know one subject in order to understand the next subject.

Fun course. Thank you for the jokes!
was hard but worth it
Should be held in a computer lab!
Printing and bringing the powerpoints to class helped a lot. More emphasis should be made to bring them and fill them out in class.
NONE
The course would have been excellent if the midterms weren't so poorly designed. If they were all like the final, the class would have been much better: 1) questions out of the book. we're used to the way the book presents problems, and they are very clearly designed 2) we can use our own computer to solve it
I thought you made yourself very available outside of class. I felt you cared about the material and the students. I really enjoyed the class.
supper cool class. very useful, recommend to increase class size if possible
This is a great course to take if you are an economics or business major and have taken a few economics courses previously. It is a little difficult to understand some terms with only knowledge and some understanding from the introduction to microeconomcs course. The formulas and excel part of the work is not difficult to do, but understanding the terminology and certain concepts were a little difficult. I think I would have had an easier time if I had a better understanding of economics. Overall, professor PingSun was very enthusiastic about teaching the students and was always available for help. An improvement would maybe to slow down the course material a little, but I understand that there are a lot of materials to go over within a limited amount of time.
PingSun is a priceless asset of this university. His teaching style and knowledge of the course material are unmatched.

8. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I enjoyed the way it was taught, as it was.
If we could somehow work examples during class more actively, it might help us understand the problems better. Right now we go through with you step by step but I usually get lost because I'm not able to keep up and write things down. When you go to the board it really helps, so maybe for the excel problems we can actually go into excel and create from scratch the tables and calculations necessary to solve a few problems.
Spend a little more time on each section, I thought the pace of the class was too fast to learn everything well.
I believe his style of teaching is sufficient. I would ask that the course be slowed down a bit, but he can't control this since he is required to teach all these concepts in one semester.
Guest lectures or interactions based on the real decision making problems(current issues) would be more effective on imparting practical knowledge and skills to the students.
provide more instruction and literature on the use of Excel
do not put so much pressure on students remembering what you taught them. You may have mentioned something once but expect us to remember it off the top of our head and get frustrated if we don't. if we don't remember, just accept the fact and move on, do not spend so much time on it; it just makes the class really awkward.
More time should be spent going over depreciation and tax, because trying to do the tax problems for the first time became guesswork. The little details that goes along with the tax problems should be gone over so that there are no suprizes in the homework.
Ease off on the homework assignments. It may be an short assignment, but may be in-depth and long.
I believe this course is fine as is, i learned a lot, albeit i worked hard outside of class as well, he is a great professor
This course was heavily dependent on PowerPoint. I.e., Death by PowerPoint. Maybe more board/excel sample problems and less ppt

One of the better professors. Knows this material and prepares the students for the exams appropriately.
Though I am completely new to engineering and economics, I really enjoyed his class learning basic principles and concepts of the field. Much more I found instructor highly approachable and helpful.
Learned a lot in this course. Prepared me for the FE exam
Professor Leung put a lot of effort into getting student input and trying to accomodate/tailor the course to us.

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Very useful applications of the material
The project was the most valuable. Instead of tests, it may be an option to make each midterm a different project.
The most valuable aspect of this course was that it showed me how what i've been learning, economic principles and math, are applied in the real world.
Using solver.
the professors powerpoints were great. he brings out points the book brushes over. also the homeworks helped me better understand the subject.
The lectures and the Homework were both VERY helpful and valuable. Also, the free sample of Risk Solver was VERY valuable as well.
the homework assignments
The content of the course was very interesting and can be very useful for people who utilize the information learned.
The project. Because the project is up to what we want to do but is also very involving doing everything by ourselves (we were not even given a topic). So by doing the project, I deepened my understanding as to how to set up the problem and solve it by myself. I think it is very useful when we go to the career world.
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Very difficult course. There should have been a comment about the fact the course requires a PC over a Mac. It has really hindered my progress in the class.
none. I learned very valuable skills.

There should be a clearer explanation of the course in the synopsis of the class while signing up. This class is very difficult for people who have no prior background in the area.
Class moved very fast. I think too much was trying to be covered.
Sometimes Prof. would be so excited about the material covered, but the idea and concepts were just too much for a class session. I'd suggest shorter classes but more frequently.
Pace was too fast. It would be better to actually do in-class assignments similar to the homework and examinations to achieve full participation and understanding of the class.
I had no idea how to use excel before the class but he helped me out a ton and i feel I have learned some really good stuff that I can use once i graduate.
this class has opened my eyes to how powerful excel is. although some concepts might be difficult to understand, the Professor Leung was able to re-explain numerous topics to the class. his compassion for his students definitely shows in his work and i am grateful to have had him as a teacher.
I thought the tests were awfully easy for the level of the course. This is a hard thing to fix due to the subject matter however. I think maybe PROJECTS instead of EXAMS would have been more appropriate. Also, a lab for the class would have been a GREAT addition but not a necessity.
I enjoyed researching and completing my project.
If the course could be taught in a computer lab where the concepts could be done in class would make the course more understandable.
Overall, this class is a useful and practical class I think. The only thing that I can think of to improve this class is to either add a lab session, or directly lecture in a computer lab. I think that way it can interest more students with their involvement rather than just sitting in the classroom listening how to solve a the spreadsheet problems because sometimes it could be quite challenging chasing the cells that the professor was referring to. If students were to learn the materials in a lab, not only could they understand the concept better but also can they ask questions that they don't understand right away, not when they have homework. I think students might learn better if UHM is to add a lab session for this class.

Nothing
Change the time of the course to mornings, so everyone isn't so tired by late afternoon.
Provide additional examples and practice problems for each chapter. In particular, it would have proved very difficult to do the homework for input/output analysis without prior background on matrix algebra. A numerical example could be quite useful for some students.
Conducting the course in a lab would be very beneficial.
it is great the way the course is designed. i would not change anything.
Go over the homework problems, or use more exact examples during lecture for the homework problems.
