22. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I think that less personal discussion about families and what mom and dad do etc the better. Stuff like that. Because it allowed some students to get too comfortable and go on and on and talk about things that were a bit TMI.

A++++++++
Excellent
would refer this professor and class to anyone
it was a fun and interesting class
It was a wonderful experience, professor Penny is a wonderful lady and made it a enjoyable class, with a variety of material introduced. The course was overall a Greg experience.
Excellent.
31. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
It's an excellent course
The course could be improved if there was quizzes regarding the reading and assignments. This would make the students feel more obligated to do the work. It is not as fun to do group work and have discussions when not everyone has done the work.
More in-class discussions. More film examples to show in class. More expressionistic assignments.

Professor Penny has such a big heart, being a native women she had a lot to offer to this class. She ws very fair and gave everyone the opportunity to participate.
I loved this course. It made summer school bearable.

11. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I loved how she encouraged us to broaden our mindsets but still stay true to our values and beliefs.
The book was a very important resource. The readings really kept the student interested and Penny- Bee did a great job at tying those readings into the rest of the class.
some of the reading from the text were a fresh look at subjects i had not seen as many perspectives of. This was the best part of the class.
The fact that we went over what all of the reaadings were, because were very confusing.
i liked the variety of assignments and the different topics that were covered.
The variety of perspectives examined was quite valuable.
I think that Professor Penny was an amazing professor and she taught all of the material really well.
The aspects of the course that were most valuable were the ways it interested me in the past and connected to the present.
The films and the textbook. I've never been a huge fan of films but the films that were shown in class really tied into the material and really opened my eyes to exactly how life was like back then or in someone else's shoes. You really were able to connect with different identities and ideologies. I catch myself when I watch movies now analyzing how characters are portrayed, what the director is focusing on, certain ideologies that are to that time period. The textbook was absolutely amazing. Just amazing stories and the Q&A forcing you to dig deeper and see past the words but find the meanings, connections, and emotion. The book used was only $40 and I marked it up so much I plan on keeping it for life and read it leisurely.
I thought it was interesting how the concepts in this class ties into ideas from other classes.
The readings were valuable because they gave a historical context to the class, but what was most valuable was when Professor Penny would relate it through YouTube videos or pictures to present times. It gives us, the students, a better understanding of what the author was trying to say. Sometimes the authors lost us as readers in the language or symbolism that they tried to use, but when Professor Penny broke it down for us, it really helped us understand what the main point was and how we can apply it to current situations.
The class discussions, especially when the normally quiet students would participate
I opened my eyes to issues that I never thought about before this class.
The book was very interesting as it provided a number of various resources regarding the topic of the course.
I really like how in the course everyone's opinion was important. There was no judgement on what was said during class, it was an open environment where everyone could express themselves.
The overall knowledge we gain at the end of the day focuses on and relates to our perspectives to our daily lives. Penny really cares about our abilities to be open-minded and really think about different ways to evaluate circumstances based on sex, sexuality, and gender.
The application of the content to society today
Her videos in class helped me understand some of the difficult readings

19. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
She already does an awesome job, the only thing I would say is to watch less movies.
i dont really know i was satasified with the class for the most part day in and day out.
change nothing :)
Further encourage participation by all students
I think she is absolutely amazing how she is!!! She is the most positive professor I have ever had. I really wish more professors were like her.
It was a very good class I cannot think of a way to improve the course.
The homework or "queries" needs to be consistent with the syllabus. Dr. Bovard seemed to forget when hw was due or just simply disregarded the hw. This confused me because it wasn't clearly stated how we were being graded on the queries. Was it one point per question? It's 20% for participation and attendance. There is a sign-in sheet everyday but how is she grading participation if there are less queries since it is on a percentage. The more queries the less each assignment is worth. 20 queries = .05% each. 10 queries = 1% each. 5 queries = 2% each. etc. If we miss one, how do we know what our grade is? We need to know how much each is worth and it should stay the same, if it changes, we should be informed. It seems like such a small thing, but every thing counts. Also, the group project with the talk show. There seemed to be no way to evaluate each individual. Especially with a lower level course, there needs to be some sort of grading for each individual because the freshman will usually attempt to shy away. I ended up doing majority of the work in my group putting aside HOURS of my own time to put together a presentation, dialogue that I just asked everyone to put their names in front of what they wanted to say/ask. Every "hw" assigned, no one did it. The google doc, no one really looked at it. No one stepped up during group discussion--but this is expected when you have a bunch of freshmans really. Having your voice, ideas, and the confidence to work together with strangers is (I believe) a skill that is acquired THROUGH the college experience. Hence why 400-level courses are more discussion vs lecture. A 100-level course should have some sort of individual grade or leader or something. Or maybe even making it even by grouping same classes together so one person isn't carrying everyone.
I think her teaching is pretty good.
Professor Penny was an amazing teacher, one of my favorites thus far. She was very enthusiastic when it came to the material and obviously put a lot of time and effort into her presentations. The movies were always interesting and the work load was not too much for a 100 level class. Professor Penny was more than fair, if anything too fair, but that is just a personal opinion.
This course was too easy for me. I would have appreciated more of a challenge, but the course was overall very enjoyable. I did feel some of the bigger assignments were a little strange and not as well fitting as they should have been.
I would have enjoyed the class more if it wouldn't have been broken up by identities, ideologies and social practices, but instead just chronologically.
If she had more quizzes regarding the reading so that the students would be obliged to do the work.
Her lecture slides could have more information on them rather than questions since some of the readings are hard to understand at times.
She's honestly, one of the best teachers I ever had, she relates history to modern times really well by using up-to-date technology, which is great.
it is good how it is; I really enjoy the class

25. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I loved the readings and the openness of the course. Penny-Bee did a great job at including everyone in class discussion and keeping things neutral. She really helped students see things from several different points of view.
the group work really made us look deeper into the readings and engage the material well.
The fact that she related a lot of things to modern day things so I could relate to it.
teacher is open and accepting of all opinions
I enjoyed the variety of teaching methods employed.
I think that this course really opened my eyes about men and women.
I enjoyed how the course work was reasonable, and enjoyable. I also enjoyed the videos.
Everything really (except the group project). The textbook, films, assignments, queries, extra-credit. Everything tied together and it was an amazing class.
Penny-Bee positive attitude =)
I like how we watch movies and relate the theme to the readings we have during that week.
I loved the presentations that Professor Penny had and her relation of the course readings to current dilemmas. Women's Studies is very controversial and I really appreciated the fact that she created a safe environment for respected discussion. My favorite part of the class was discussion because it was interesting to hear other people's opinions on scholarly topics.
The topics covered. There was a lot of discussion, although many students did not participate. Prof. Penny was very accepting and open to all students.
This class was very enjoyable! I looked forward to going every day and never wanted to miss class!
I liked the extend of material we covered in such a short amount of time.
I liked the assignments she gave us since they enabled us to express our selves creatively as well as apply what we have learned.
Learning the capabilities of my knowledge to be open minded and willing to understand different circumstances.
watching videos and being able to learn from them and relate it to the content learned in the class
Dissecting and analyzing certain articles

Awesome! I loved it! I would reccomment it to anyone! [:
a good intro class for the subject of women studies.
great
perfect score. 100%
Fantastic teacher and material.
Great course would recommend it to everyone.
excellent because I learned a lot in a short amount of time.
Amazing course--very well organized.
I came in not knowing what to expect, in other words, I did not have expectations. But it turns out that this was a very interesting class and engaging.
Outstanding. This was my first Women's Studies class and it really made me want to continue further exploration into this field.
I liked this course. It was enjoyable, but a little too easy.
I would recommend this class to anyone!
It could have only been better if more students would have participated.
It is a fairly good course, there is just a lot of information crammed into six weeks.
Great and fun class.
amazing because I really enjoyed taking this class
Very enjoyable and explorative.
28. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I think that if we were to look at the past a little more in depth it would have been a better 'history' class. However, connecting past events and view to life today really helped us understand things better.
if the readings were more streamlined in the book it would be easier to read them. having to look all over for one then the other was super frustrating.
change nothing. please
Course could cover greater detail, less spread of material. Also employ other material than sourcebook.
Does not need improvement.
I think other courses could learn from this course.
Queries being turned in when they are due. Group project having some sort of individual grading.
I thoroughly enjoyed this course.
Professor Penny was a more than fair teacher. This course was excellent and the only criticism I have for this class was that it could have been a little bit harder. I understand that this is a 100 level class and it is during the summer, but it was still an overall great experience.
More all-around class participation, better projects.
The only improvement I can think of is just the way the class is broken up.
If there was a requirement for student participation than it would have been a more interesting course. Tere is always more to learn when you hear various perspectives.
This course could be improved as mentioned before with the lecture slides. Other than that the course is pretty good.
more class time to do projects.
this class is fine the way it is
I think if we individually presented more we could get involved with the learning. It helps to hear other students give their opinion and see how they analyzed their topics

Thank you Ms. Bovard it was a wonderful course.
I did not think the that speech we attended on Monday had anything to do with our class. It was about the crime in Seattle and the sociological aspect of it. Nothing to do with women studies: Gender, Sex, and Sexuality. All the gentleman talked about the police and streets.
This course was fun, learned a lot and would recommend it to anyone interested in gender, sex and sexuality.

12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Everything!! The material was so interesting, the atmosphere was open for discussion and very comfortable and accepting, Penny-Bee is so encouraging!!
I like how Penny Bee involves the class as a community and tries to accomodates everyone's learning styles.
I love how we are exposed to various media such as the movies and short films that are presented in class. I think that being able to tie in that material to the information in the text book is fantastic.
Using modern films and ads to explain theories and concepts
I liked the videos and the opportunities for us to present. considering it is a writing intensive class I almost think it should also be oral communications because we all got to contribute alot.
Professor Bovard is one of the most ispiring educators I have ever had. Through her knowledge, enthusiasm, and organisation I have learned much more than I expected when entering into this class. I mentioned in the questions that this course was a requirement for me and I feel very fortunate that is was. I am leaving this experience more knowledgeable, more inspiried, and most of of all, a better person. The university is truly blessed to have such a wonderful mentor, person, and educator on staff. I would highly recommend her class to anyone!
how everyone speaks there mind. very interesting.
I really enjoyed how our group project helped the class get to know one another more closely. In doing so, we were able to help each other with ideas about our paper.
How like how everything is done as a class. It hhelps me better understand the material.
I enjoyed the movies. Because we were able to see the medias portrayal of women and the certain things they go through, and how watching these movies might affect how we think on certain subjects.
She's amazing! Makes the classroom feel like a community, makes it a supportive environment in which everyone feels free to share their opinion, and no one feels like they will be attacked for feeling differently about an issue than everyone else. I really like that she uses powerpoint, but has the students fill it in. What a great teaching tool! It keeps us from being passive learners and forces us to be active participants in your education! Great class! So glad I enrolled!
I loved penny's enthusiasm of the students work and the material throughout the course!

Nothing!!
keep up the good work.
This course has so much interesting material and is taught by a great teacher. If I were to suggest an improvement though, it would be even more interesting if a guest speaker could come in (for example a survivor, former offender, or worker--a person from the three main groups we study).
A updated text with current figures would be better. I would also like to see a few other texts offered for the course.
I wasn't a huge fan of one of our textbooks, though I know it was written by a prof on campus it was very over my head alot of times. But other than that.
none
no improvement. class is excellent.
There is no need for improvement in this course. This class was one of the best writing intensive classes I have had here at UH.
This course was excellent nothing negative to say. She was the bext teacher I had so far at UH Manoa.
Nothing really, i have really enjoyed taking this class, and I feel like I learned a lot in such a short amount of time.
I think it was excellent, no improvement needed!
I do not feel anything could improve, but it would be awesome to get some guest speakers, but other than that this class is great!
15. Other comments:
Friday Fun Film all the way!
I would definitely take another class taught by Penny.
This was my favorite writing intensive class yet at UH Manoa. Penny is great at breaking down into manageable pieces. Penny also is extremely enthusiastic and gives great contribution from her experiences. As I said before I liked all the movies she brought, I felt they actually contributed to our learning instead of how must profs just use it as time fillers.
good class
I would definitely recommend this course to any student. I feel Penny knows a lot of information about the current topics and she has a passion for teaching, which shows in the classroom. She loves her students and wants them to love the topic.
I hope to see her as a teacher in the future.
Penny-Bee Bovard is an AWESOME teacher!!
You rock! Keep it up! And I'm so excited to TA for you next semester!
I would recommend this class to every women n sociology majors

12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
the discussions
everything!!! I absolutely love sports so it was amazing to go to class and be able to talk about something you are genuinely interested in.
the inclass discussions
The consistent theme of staying on target with the learning goals of the course.
The extra credits, the worksheets, the group work and activities. The journals are very helpful by letting us understand what we read from the readings and the discussions we had in class.
The way this class was thought as if you were in a sport because you had TEAMS.
I appreciated her flexibility as well as enthusiasm for everything discussed in class. I was nice to see someone so passionate about what they teach.
I think that the group activities and films made the class interesting.
The course adhered to the syllabus schedule so students knew what to expect when they attended class. The grading was fair and there were plenty of extra credit opportunities.
the environment the teacher built for everyone in the class
Everything it was a very good class!
The topic of women in sports is a new and refreshing topic. Penny's kind and positive attitude made the class very enjoyable.
TEACHER WAS AWESOME
I enjoyed Penny-Bee's enthusiastic teaching style. She is knowledgeable about the subject, passionate, and very funny. She made the course very enjoyable.
The class environment was very relaxed and comfortable which made learning the content extremely easy. The instructor also gave excellent presentations and knew how to get the most and best out of her students.
All the group work
We did a lot of group activities, which gave us the opportunity to interact with others in class. Not a lot of courses in college do that, so it's a nice surprise.
I loved how she always engaged the class in discussions, either in one big group or sub-groups and then combining them all to share ideas.
videos that were examples of what we were learning
Gender and Roles
i love professor bovards take on the sports and gender. its a very interesting class, very fun, and i recommend it to all, especially athletes.
i was never bored in this class
The instructor :)
Love the content, very intellectually stimulating and makes you think about concepts that are often overlooked. Penny also gives many opportunities to receive extra credit so that's nice if you need a little extra help.
She was passionate about her subject and had high expectations for us as far as workload went, but her grading was fair and as long as we tried, she rewarded that.
Her teaching style
Examining media and society's influence on women's representation in sport.

14. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
Nothing!
nothing needs improvements
I think Penny is doing a very well because she just always gets our attention and helps us think critically in class.
This course could be improved by having the students face each other. Like have a big circle when having a class discussion more often. I just suggest this because i had a class that would always start and end class in a circle. It gives it more meaning when everyone can see everyone. Makes the discussion more meaningful.
Many people who take this course already knows a thing or two about sports and gender. Maybe add in a debate every once in a while, dividing the class and their opinions, seeing everyones point of view.
I don't think there is much to be improved. The material is all current, and I think the class is fine the way it is.
Less group work and more lecture. Clear, concise guidelines for papers. As it stands, the instructions are confusing: what's listed as the requirements for one section will be summarized in one place; then, there will be additional requirements listed for that same point, elsewhere.
Nothing
More contemporary videos to examplify the theories!
The only improvement that might need to be made is the implementation of more discussion, involving everyone.
NOTHING
I can not think of any way this course could be improved!
Nothing the course was absolutely perfect.
n/a
This course was excellent as it is.
There are a lot of group discussions on the material and special topics. I feel that the readings were somewhat difficult to relate to some of the material, even though the reading was stimulating.
more organized groups
I Liked the course a lot I think should just stay the way it is
i think the way she approaches the subjects and material are way that i feel are the most fun to learn, a lot of hands on, a lot of visual things and class discussion, which i feel, especially being an athlete, are the best ways to learn
This course could have been improved if more students were willing to talk and share their opinion, rather than the same 5 people talking and speaking out
I think it would be nice if the playbooks were turned in 3-4 times in the semester except for just two. Might be easier to stay on track that way.
Nothing.

Good job Penny! Keep up the good work. I really enjoyed your class.
I loved how she used visual aids to strengthen her point: power points, video clips, parts in movies.

18. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I liked the text book and how the topics of our class was directly relatable to our own lives and to the decisions we will be making an a constant basis. I liked that Penny presented topics in a non-aggressive and un-opinionated way as to ensure that no one would be offended by the very personal and controversial topics discussed.
Penny was absolutely fantastic! She was enthusiastic about the course and gave great feedback on assignments and during class activities. She is always willing to answer questions after class or in her office. She is very patient with students and encourages them to do their best. She gives praise for every answer offered in class discussions. She is very understanding of student's schedules and flexible with assignments. Penny makes learning fun and interesting.
I really enjoyed Penny's class; in particular, I liked how we worked in groups all semester. I feel like being in a group made me a more effective communicator, collaborator and I liked that I was part of something bigger than myself. I also liked the group projects we had to do/evaluate. Also, I liked the different media resources we used such as websites, films, interviews, etc.
Powerpoints, movies, group projects, open discussions and she was very mindful of other's opinions.
What was great about this specific course was that we learned about the theories and concepts in the texts and were encouraged to reflect and see how they applied to our own individual lives. I also really enjoyed being put into ho'olaulima groups, they were a great way to get to know a few of my classmates in a more intimate, personal way.
I like the groups and the media presentations.
I liked the group discussions and the quizzes. A lot of teachers have a problem getting students to read. Take home quizzes definetly required that we read.
I loved everything about this course, especially the presentations because they were fun to watch!
The course challenges you to think of alternative ways of family styles without passing moral judgement in reference to your own.
the class discussions as well as the materials we covered in class. it was also fun to work with our ho'olaulima groups
I liked the part about love and marriage
she gives good examples when explaining something.
I enjoyed the group presentations we all had to do!
Everything! Lectures, readings and films.
The presentations of each project by our peers.
When I come to this class, I learn the contents easily and it's fun. Also, the teacher was the best!
I loved the teacher and the way she taught the class. It was conducted in groups and we had to work with people. I also liked how we were able to talk to the Professor about anything.
Very patience and enthusiastic teacher
she loves to teach and has a thirst for it!! she really wants her students to learn and be able to apply what they've acquired in class to the real world!!
I loved the different test variations.. kept the class interesting and us focused on all the material not just facts. The related movies were also interesting. Ho'olaulima groups were very helpful and allowed us to make friendships outside of our regular friendships we may have already had.
I loved her enthusiastic approach towards teaching. You could definitely tell Penny loves teaching; she created was a nice, learning environment for all her students.
Her being the most patient and nicest teacher with her students. She gives her students her full attention and love towards this course.
very understanding instructor who strives for every student to succeed in class.
I like the group aspect of the course, I felt like it was very inviting and easy to work with other people.
very interesting
Everything!
I loved how we worked in small groups. It helped me to gain more help and support from not only the professor but my fellow students as well.
I liked sharing personal stories. I also liked the media presentations.
i liked the whole course because it taught me t he values of how to be a good family which is very important.

20. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I think it would have been nice if all of the students were pushed to participate more. I felt like a group of boys just sat in the back of the classroom and played with their phones instead of paying any attention to such incredibly relevant and important topics as abortion, gay marriage, and coping methods for dealing with family crisis. We all have families and most of us will likely start our own, and we all deal with relationships of different kinds so it would be nice if this class was respected more by all our class members. I also would have liked to have more discussion about how to communicate more efficiently in all relationships in our lives because that is often the root of all conflict.
The book required for the course is very expensive.
I think this class needs to be a little bit longer just because the period goes by too quickly.
She is very lenient, but reasonable. It's a good and bad thing. It's bad because I know a lot of students in her class that took her being lenient forgranted. For example, the football players used to barge into class late and talk. I found that very disrespectful towards her as a professor. She needs to buckle down on respect while she is talking. Other than that, fabulous course.
What might make the class a better experience would be to switch ho'olaulima groups a few times throughout the semester rather than staying in one group for the whole semester. Since this is a WS/SOC class, it is all about our experiences and since people experience different things, they have different stories, lessons, and experiences to offer.
I do wish that extra credit could be received in other ways than just attending events. It was kind of inconvenient.
This course can be improved by maybe switching up the groups here and there so we can get to know more people in the class.
No improvements needed
her course if fine, i don't think she needs to improve on anything. she is a great teacher
More quizzes on required reading.
Nothing
This was a great course. A lot of work but we learned a lot.
This class does not have to be improved. It is really good right now.
N/A
I don't think there is anything in this course that could be better. She hit every important subject about the course which will give us a better understanding about relationships around the globe. She helps and brings out each person full potential as a student in class
Maybe have more writing assignments?? Other than that it was good!
It was perfect.
I really loved this course and would recommend taking it to any student. Penny-Bee Bovard cares a lot about what and how she teaches in order to help students understand the material. These are the kinds of classes that students want to sit in.
Nothing other than more class participation.
i liked the course the way it was exactly i do not feel it could be improved at all.
21. Other comments:
Perhaps a circle setting where a class discussion about the reading and our own feelings could have included everyone more and allowed all the students to understand how valuable this class is.
I really enjoyed Penny's teaching style. She gave us so many opportunities to voice our opinions and she respected all of them. She is very good at fostering a sense of family within our class and I have to say this was the class I was most comfortable in. I would definitely take another class from her!
Excellent instructor.
Penny-Bee was a great instructor!
Kumu Penny presents the knowledge in our books with heart. This could be very difficult information to grasp, though she presents it with such ease. She is all heart, what a wonderful example to the younger women in this class. The knowledge that I absorbed in this class will be beneficial in my career choice, which is working with women and children of domestic violence. I would take all of Kumu Penny's classes because she presents knowledge with clarity. Mahalo nui loa Kumu Penny.
Thank you for a wondrful semester.

18. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I liked watching the films and idscussing, I felt like I could pay more atn than during the lectures which were a little long for my attention span
For a summer school course this was a class i actually looked forward to. The strengths of the course were the way Penny designed it to be. There was a great deal of interactions with classroom discussions that seemed to have a free spirit about it. People could voice their opinions and not feel rejected after. Penny did a great job and making the material current and relevant to her students. This gave me more inspiration to do the required assignments. Penny also, is very passionate about what she teaches so this gives a momentum throughout the entire course.
I liked that the class size was small enough that we were able to express our thoughts and ideas. I liked that you allowed us to be creative in the ways that relayed our presentations. I liked that you were flexible and understanding.
i like how she knows how to relate to all of us as students. Shes very easy to go to for help and communicate with.
The better understanding of gender in the daily basis.
I enjoyed the way that Penny-Bee made each class enjoyable. We were able to work in groups and think creatively each time we met up. Penny also used entertaining examples to emphasize certain points.
Very interesting insights

20. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I was annoyed by the broken DVD player which was not Penny's fault. That's about it!
Everything seemed to run smooothly. The only thing i could mention is maybe being a little firm with students who are not entirely cooperating.
I liked the assignments. I really don't have any complaints.
I think the course is great already.
hmm......maybe have the school replace the busted DVD player. Other than that, I can't think of anything else that really bothered me. I think that the class has been/is being taught very well.
add more challenging subjects

AWESOME TEACHER! UHM definitely needs more professors like Penny. She is knowledgeable, passionate, relevant, and understands the theory of how a classroom is to be orchestrated. I learned a great deal of new concepts and theories. At times my brain was like a sponge, just soaking in ideas i never gave thought to. After taking this class i have gained a good amount of awareness of gender discrimination that takes place in our culture and system. GOOD STUFF!!!
Thank you so much for an enjoyable class. I think we all contributed and gained a lot this semester. I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer.
I honestly enjoyed the class and would enthusiastically recommend Penny-Bee to anyone asking me for a good WS/SOC class.
great instructor. very inspirational. :)
