19. If you were teaching this course: a. What would you do to improve it? b. What would you change?
a. The class was wonderful. Nothing really needs improvment b. i would change nothing, it was a fun class, and i learned alot.
a. Offer an audio CD of songs/chants to be learned for a fee (like buying a book). b. Nothing. I have found the program, instructor, and material useful and life changing. I have learned more than just a subject. I have something that I can and will pass on to future generations. Its value is immeasurable!! Mahalo nui loa!
For those of us that do not pick up the Hawaiian language/chants as quickly as others, I would have appreciated more time spent in the classroom or opportunties outside of the classroom to get "secret tutoring" on our chants in addition to our "secret hula" - even though the "secret hula" was initiated by the stuents. Additionally, it woul have been helpful to receive copies of the awanas because while these may be local Hawaiian traditional songs - not all of us are Hawaiian, but we are wanting to learn these traditional songs and it can be difficult if it's assumed that all of us know the meles already. I recognize that it was my responsibiity to ask - which I eventually did, but it was a challenge none the less.

Teaching this course requires unique talents and we have been given the best in Dr. Tangaro.
I don't think that anyone, except a few faculty in this discipline, would be able to match Tangaro's mastery.
Nothing. This course was moving along at a brisk pace and although it may have been overwhelming at times, there was still a lesson in that.
I think it would be helpful if the students had some language (Hawaiian) ability. It would make the learning much richer.
All of the assignments and activities were directed toward achieving the learning goals. The instructor was supportive and clear in expectations. I can't suggest any improvements.
The course met all of the prescribed expectations and more. My greatest disappointment is that the "cohort" that was developed over 4 semesters agos will be ending with this course. I believe there is sufficient interest and need to to continue a similar type of cohort model like this as students are able to develop excellent inter-group relations over a longer period of time that does not usually occur in a one semester course, strong peer support, and mentor-student relationship with the instructor to ensure every student met their potential and their perceived level of success.
This class was awesome. The only problem was that class wasn't long enough, but then there are only 24 hours in a day.
a. This class was very enjoyable and thus difficult to improve. That being said, I do feel it would have been an improvement to take on less in this class. b. I would prefer to further refine any dances we learn rather than continuing to learn new dances throughout the semester. I'm really glad we didn't learn another `auana, although I would have liked to learn one using the `ili`ili. While I understand that this is our capstone class, it did require a very large commitment of time. It seems better not to try and fit too much in just because it's our last semester. I prefer to remain focused on, and perfect, the ones we learn. As for the ho`ike, I'm really disappointed that we won't be sharing the pahus or`auana dances for our performance. I understand that the `ukeke is a valid display, however some of the dances would have been wonderful, too.
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
The instructor provided an experiential learning experience and motivated the students to challenge themselves to exceed their limitations and strive for excellence. The instructor was able to have students relate the classroom learning to real life experiences and to practice what was taught in real life settings. His methods are inspirational.
I think his teaching methods are great. it reachs everyone no matter what level you are. I liked that about this class.
I enjoyed the hands on work, the stories each hula spoke of, the challenges the instructor gave, the team work, the "bridging" of HawCC and UHH, the opportunities to become more in tuned to my environment on a physical and spiritual level.
Superb, inspiring
I appreciated our instructor helping us think outside of the box as it relates to our hula and our every day lives. He was providedopportunities to think introspectively about what we leared in the hula and what the hula means to us in our every day lives in terms of understanding our place in the world and how we are all connected. While I at times thought some our outside assignments were a lot of work and time consuming, I look back and know that now the learnin was from understanding patienc and appreciation for the world around us, our community and the gifts the land gives us. At our capstone ceremony, I was appreciative to have been prt of the experience and to be able to leave my gifts of my ti leaf and liko offerings.
I'm very happy to have taken his classes. He is very helpful and generous and makes learning fun and pleasurable.
Dr. Tangaro is one of the best educator in the Hawaiian Lifestyles program. He makes learning the Hula and chants educational as well as fun. We are not only chanting to chant words but we all have an understanding of the chant because explains the meaning of the words behind it. Also, this class is not the usual HawCC student class but is made up of learners, faculty and staff that are not the traditional student (age wise)he has geared the class to fit our stamina and his purpose in this class.
I think this kind of learning should be done in every classroom here at HawCC and everywhere. Community learning opportunities were so plentiful and I am grateful because I find it the best learning experience for me and I know for many.

Dr. Tangaro never stops to offer opportunities for us to learn in our own individual ways. His suite of creative teaching methods is unmatched by any professor I know.
The teacher is exemplary in terms of pedagogy and impact on student learning.
Tangaro has the gift of expressing the dance not only through motions but also with thoughtful/profound words. This semester, we experienced a third element to have visited areas related to the chants that we learned.
Tangaro used a variety of methods to provoke authentic learning.
Tangaro was very patient when dealing with our class. We are a melting pot with various levels of skill and knowledge in hula. He helped each one of us, no matter what our skill level was, to improve. He was very supportive and fostered our love for hula and the Hawaiian culture.
I love him...even if I did not understand at the beginning of the learning where he was going. He lives the hula and it shows greatly in his pedagogy. He also brought in outside resources that enriched the learning. I am not the same person I was when I began this journey.
Dr. Tangaro is a masterful teacher, who exhibits great creativity in his command and interpretation of the hula, as well as care and inspiration for his haumana to achieve the skills and learning objectives established for the course. The extended field trip, or huaka`i, to Kaua`i provided a true hands-on learning experience, to learn about the places of hula at one level and to learn about our individual places in our families and in our communities at another level. As part of the field trip experience, students created designs for a printed pa`u, to include la`i and ulu and crafted la`i pa`u and liko lehua lei, both a new experience for many. This hand-crafting demonstrated the value of perserverence and the highlighted the joy of creating.
The teacher use of a variety of instructional techniques and willingness to adapt as needed, ensured every student was engaged in the learning.
Tangaro is a natural born teacher. He knows his subject so well and is so anxious to share and teach. I feel joyful anticipation before each class. He brings everyone together as one yet allows us to keep our individuality. He motivates us to be open and sharing also. The hands-on, first hand experiences, especially, learning to love and malama our environment, I may never have had a chance to experience, had it not been for Tangaro. He knows that a classroom doesn't necessarily always mean 4 walls to keep you in, but is the world at large waiting to be explored.
Taupouri Tangaro is a great instructor and person. He shares the profundity of learning hula and it's traditions. He enlightens students into a sense of responsibility to appreciate and share the learning. Basically, he is a success!
21. Has he/she contributed to your general knowledge or to learning job skills?
The knowledge gained through this course on protocol has already been applied to my job.
I now have a deeper understanding of what it is that tangaro is teaching, and for that i am greatful.
He has opened my eyes to the possibilities. I feel more invigorated, and desire to get back into a classroom to teach. I have learned to work with a variety of people, superiors, peers, students. I experienced a richer way to teach and learn. I will be more consciencious
Enhanced knowledge of subject, and learned how it applies to life (qualities, meanings) in general
During the year and a half being with the Kukuenas, I always assumed that we were there to just learn the dance and do our best to learn the meanings of the meles and chants. But there was more to just the hula, the meles, and chants in the classroom. It was about building community, learning to understand and appreciate from a different lens, and that no matter our background, titles, ethnicity, we are all tied t each othe in some way. It is each of our responsibilities to learn and share our knowledge with those around us.
Yes, he has and more. I'm ever so grateful to have him as a instructor, kumu and friend.
Yes, I now have an understanding of the culture that we all live in Hawaii. It is not only Hawaiian but the other cultures that add to it.
Yes he has. The way that Tangaro teaches is quite unique. He is absolutely so knowledgeable of the subject and so colorful and exciting to sit and talk with. But mostly what he teaches you is how important it is to look within yourself to find the answers to life and then to pass this kind of learning on to your ohana, incorporate in in your work place and in the community at large. And when we all can finally start to do this what an awesome place we will live in. Mahalo nui Tangaro.

Most definitely - especially knowledge of Hawaiian ways of knowing and culture embodies in hula - dance and chant. Professor Tangaro's style of expressing his wisdom provdes many practical philospohies and strategies for individual improvement through "right" thought and action.
The wahipana on Kauai was the culmination of our four semesters with Tangaro. The purpose for visits to each of the sites had a deep-rooted meaning which accounted for some life-changing experiences for many of us. The knowledge that we learned will not only make us better persons, but greater individuals and hopefully more productive in our work as well as personal lives.
Yes! Other professionals at the university should take this class.
Yes. This class helped me to understand that I can only steer the things I am in control of. If I have no control over it, I can't obsess over the outcome. Also, I am more understanding of people and their situations because of my experience in this class.
I have learned that the discipline learned in hula can and should be tranferred to other parts of my life. Lesson One: come prepared. Lesson Two: if you do not know something, find a way to learn it. Lesson Three: Create a place in your life to discovery and blend it with other segments of one's life. Lesson Four: Share what you are able. Some things need to be for your personal learning and thinking. I am learning to put indigenous knowledge into academia in a way that is fruitful. Mahalo a nui loa.
Dr. Tangaro designed a course intended to not only instruct us in the art form of the hula, but in the lessons of hula for life--how we relate to others in our daily work and living. We learned what it means to be sacred, to understand one's place in the universe and in one's environment. Participation in this course increased my understanding of people. Our world may be more complex, but the human condition has not changed. The course experience increased my tolerance for differences of opinion and behavior and improved my ability carry out my work.
My expectations of what I thought I would initially learn in the course and the courses overtime was far more than I anticipated. I feel more engaged and confident about my knowledge of Hawaiian culture and perspectives, although I still have much to learn. Additionally, the instructor has sparked both a spiritual and physical need to continue with hula and Hawaiian language.
He has greatly contributed to my knowledge and understanding of my own Hawaiian culture through hula which infuses all aspects of my life. Although one would say how can hula contribute to learning a job skill, this class encouraged me to become more open minded of others and patient with myself which are skills anyone can use in a career.
Yes and yes. I have learned much about Hawaiian culture. This will help me in my position working with the public of Hawai`i and help me feel more connected to the island I call home. It has been a wonderful experience to learn the significance of the places and people of Hawai`i.

Truly profound and shared experience in capstone project, culminating years of learning - one of the most powerful experiences in many years
I have been transformd by my experience in Tangaro's class and know that I am very fortunate to have been able to belong and participa in such an enlgihtening experience. Our capstone event in Kaua'i was something that is unexplainable, yet so inspirational. As we embarked on our journey in the early dawn, I remember Tangaro's words, "You are here for a reason. Hula has brought you to this moment to discover what that reason is. I have been been able to open the doors to your self discovey, it is now up to you to determine what that meaning is". I was so emotional from his words and as we headed down to the beach to refect. I left a part of me there and a new person left because of that experience. I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity to find a part of myself that was lost and it was through this class that I was able to do so.
May every HawCC student be able to experience this type of learning and experience. It will change their life forever and help us build a stronger community in which to live and raise our children.
Mahalo piha for offering this unconventional course for us. This and the past "Kuku'ena" courses must have required an extraordinary amount of risk-taking and commitment from the Chancellor down in I Ola Haloa at HCC. This class has inspired me to make sure that our kumu's selfless dedication for firmly basing post-secondary eduction in Hilo on Hawaiian values will amplify through us at HCC and UHH.
I am enriched and inspired by the professor. I love the course. I am grateful for Dr. Tangaro's aloha, compassion, and giftedness.
This was a wonderful journey. I'm sad to see it end.
I am sad we will not be continuing this class for a while. It has enriched my life, brought discipline where needed, and contributed to my life as a Hawaiian. The class was made richer because of our teacher. There were times we wanted to do well because we did not want to disappoint. I also learned that dancing in the third row made me just as responsible to know my oli and hula as those in row one. Interesting thought...one cannot hide!
This course experience brought me closer to the land. Indigenization of the academy could not only provide this experience for others, but also reverse the environmental crisis in which we find ourselves today.
I feel that this whole experience has transformed me spiritually, physically, and professionally. I find that I am more reflective in how I approach situations, more open to different views, and more connected to the environment and my community.
This series of classes with Tangaro has been a blessing for which I will always be grateful. His sharing of himself and his knowledge has motivated me to continue my pursuit of academia at HCC and UHH. I look forward to more classes to enhance my Hawaiian cultural knowledge and experience. I enjoyed Taupori's teaching methods. There were very culturally appropriate and deeply founded in tradition.
Great job..
The one problem with the instructor is that he has his favorites in class and tends to be hard on studetns he does not like well, specially the international students.
The class was so great it would be hard to improve. It's a class that's makes student's say that its the best they ever had.
I did feel there was not enough time to completely learn all the material presented. I would go over the material. I think being shown the dance once or hearing the chant just once, then being expected to know it, was very high expectations. I would provide the chants for those who learn visually. I would want all the students to be more on the same level rather than just a handful of students surpassing the rest of the class.
I will manage the time very carefully because students paid expensive tuition. If a class will be finished early, it's waste money. A instructor should be fair to every student. Otherwise, the instructor doesn't motivate students.

Tangaro and his teaching methods are inspiring, empowering and enlightening. I always look forward to going to this class. It's the highlight of my learning experiences this semester. I've had several counselors in my life and concluded that they couldn't do anything for me. I'd rather spend my time with someone who meant something to me like my mom. However, Tangaro provides insight, support and encouragement more effectively than any counselor I've ever had. I would listen to him day and night. The best is that he can make you laugh and learn with heart touching lessons at the same time. Some people just lighten up a room and make people feel good when they walk in, Tangaro is one of those people (his wife is definitely another, what an honor it was to have her as a pani hakahaka). Tangaro is a teacher that I would follow through all his courses if time allowed. I was always shocked that the community college has such a large pool of the best experts on the Hawaiian culture and somehow I missed out on it all by going straight to the university.
I think the teacher sets high expectations for everyone. I would like to see his teaching method to include more repetition of the dances to refresh and correct.

I feel privileged to have been a part of this class and am greatful for the time and energy that this instructor has given to dedicate the perpetuation and continuation of such sacred practices.
This class isn't just a college course it's a lesson in life, among the best classes I ever took, the best in its own way. Married couples in crisis might stand a chance after taking this class, mothers have time for themselves, fathers eyes opened, hawaiian culture glorified, harmony punctuated and youngans given a guiding hand.
I found this to be a difficult but fun class. I have great respect for the teacher and his teaching and hope to have the opportunity to learn from him again. I do hope that future classes will allow everyone enough repetition to retain the knowledge given.
The instructor was not fair for every students, so I felt very uncomfortable and stressful.

Not have as many students in it, or have a larger room. Perhaps the younger, more agile students would feel more challenged in one of the other cohorts. I often feel that they are being held back or not dancing to their fullest potential dancing with the kupuna.
I wouldn't change anything. This class is unique in it's content, presentation and student expectations. If anything, keep this type of learning environment in future classes.

if i were teaching this course i would not have allowed students to skip the first level and jump into the second level. i felt that this hindered the learning of the second level students by robbing them of time as they had to wait for the first levelers to catch up.
This is not a good question: "If you were teaching this course..." I am no where being near worthy of teaching this course. After experiencing two semesters of instruction from Taupouri Tangaro, I have so much more to learn about the history of the chants and dances introduced at Unukupukupu. Tangaro is a walking encyclopedia and has an instinctive creative genius element that makes the class educational as well as enjoyable. His magnetism is quite apparent by the class attendance that averages about 30 students each class session. The learning does not end when class ends, he has given us assignments that take us outside of the classroom to collect various material to enhance learning.
Have the chants and music sheets available on Laulima. Encourage class time to create pa'u design from mea kanu.
Give aliitle more time to studnets who do not know Hawaiian laungage.

Taupouri is an exciting, positive person and his teaching method is quite unique. He makes each class a joy. He stimulates my mind, spirit and body. This was more than just a dance class. This class opened my energies to the possibilities of my self and learning from others.

I definitely enjoyed the spontaneity as well as the structure of Tangaro's teaching methods. However, I sometimes felt that the vagueness on some of the assignments made me nervous on how I was doing in the class. I thought that giving each student the responsibiity for thier own learning, interpretation and assessment was invaluable and innovative, it would have helped to get more examples of what Tangaro was looking for.

Nothing. This class by far epitomizes what all professors should be doing. The professor is extremely knowledgeable about the topic, engaging, and interacts well with the students. He teaches us and sets a level of expectation that is challenging to achieve, but allows us to experience success as the class progresses.
The teacher is an outstanding hula kumu. I feel very fortunate to have been able to learn from him.
Tangaro is an awesome kumu hula. His creativity and mastery of the hula is inspiring. He has captured the essence of the art form and knows how to communicate this to students who are both novices and experienced. At what ever level you are at, you go away enriched and with a deeper understanding about how the hula is connected to the environment, Hawaiian culture and values. I would also like to comment on Tangaro's lively sense of humor which keeps us relaxed and reminds us that learning is fun and to not take ourselves too seriously.
Dr. Tangaro made learning fun and make all of us work hard at it. Learning the new dances were at the right pace. Most of us stumbled through but we made it work.
I really enjoyed going to Tangaro's class. He is very knowledgable in his teaching. Very helpful and spontanous, which works well in his field.

He has a real gift with teaching and encourages his learners to strive beyond their own self-imposed limitations to achieve their true potential within. It has been a joy and a privilege to be a student of Taupouri Tangaro.

As someone who has observed countless lessons, I thought the pacing and the variety of activities was just right. I liked having a variety of class formats, times when we are sitting and listening, times when we are practicing, water breaks etc. Instructions were clear and easy to follow even for a novice like me. It was not too teacher-centered like many classes tend to be. I liked the fact that students are encouraged to teach each other and that the font of knowledge is not always the teacher.
The teacher fully engages the students to want to learn both in and out of the class. The requirements of self-directed learning opportunities outside of the class expands what we learn in the class and has been another way for us to get to know out fellow classmates more personally that wouldn't otherwise happen in a typical classroom setting.

Obviously, what I have learned cannot be directly applied to my daily activities in the workplace--however, the knowledge and insight that I have gained allows me to become a better person at work. I feel more empowered at work in the knowledge I have learned in Papa 'Olapa with Kumu Tangaro. Taking his course has allowed me to enhance my leadership skills insomuch that it brings together the elements of what I have learned and how I can apply it to my job to become a more confident and effective worker. It provided me with the opportunity that I did not know I was seeking: I began the course seeking to learn more about my Hawaiian culture--but by the end of the course, it wasn't so much about cultural relevance and content as it was in seeking (and finding) to learn more about me. In this respect, the course and it's teacher have accomplished much towards my personal professional and self- development.

This class was very hard for me, first in terms of time commitment since I have a busy job and I am a mom. And second because I have never danced before or taken any kind of class that required physical participation since I was a teenager (a long time ago). I also have a genuine desire to learn as much as I can about Hawaiian culture since I am not from this culture but I hope to continue living here and bring up my children here. I learned a great deal and of course now I realize how much more I have to learn. It was a very enjoyable experience for me. I made new friends in the class and strengthened friendships that I already had. I felt that I had a very special experience in this class, one that will stand out in my life, because I felt that I had come closer to understanding Hawaiian culture in a way that I could never have done without this class. I hope that I can take another class like this in the future. Thank you for giving me this experience!
This is the second class I have taken from the instructor and I've thoroughly enjoyed both classes. I would definitely take another class from him next semester.

I am honored to have learned from my instructor. He teaching makes you think of a deeper meaning and having a connection.
Since this was taught like a seminar course, I liked that students had a role in "teaching" themselves to learn about the subject matter, that the activities involved everyone in a variety of experience, and there was flexibility in what we learned.

The book is too complicate so I would change the textbook.

it is not worth that i paid a tuition, there were quite a lot of classes were canceled.
This class too many cancel and short cut the class time.
He is a knowledgable teacher, however, he canced many times and he did not lecture enough sometimes. That is a little bit disappointing.
