I think the reading and the cafe were the most valuable because we learnt a lot of translation skill from the reading, and the cafe encourage students to write Chinese.

The aspects of the course were most valuable were the readings that she provided to students and the feedback of homework. Ms. Lu always give us interesting reading to help us develop our English and Chinese grammar knowledge. When there were mistakes in the homework, she always gave us useful correct feedback.

Translating proper names, stories, movies.

The various English to Chinese translation homework of the course is good practice and is very helpful. Weekly cafe is also fun to do.

How to manage the money.

I like that the course is taught by a native speaker. The teacher is also a professional translator. I like that for each assignment, there are examples/samples so that I know how to do my work and what is expected of me. I like that we can look at our classmate's work. I like that Lu Laoshi is a strict grader. I like that she responds quickly to students' emails. She also grades work in a timely manner too. Having the schedule and assignment due dates lets me work at my own speed and finish work ahead of schedule. I'd take another class with Lu Laoshi.

Very helpful course

I think it is good that we can do the translation of our favorite movie.

This course helps students to become a better bilingual translator who connect Chinese and English very well.

As a native English speaker, this class was most helpful in teaching me the nuances of composition in Chinese. I would not recommend this class so much as a "language learning" environment in the sense that I didn't feel that my reading/writing/speaking skills increased, but that being said, this class was absolutely great for teaching me how to compose in my second language. That's not a skill that is easily worked into normal language learning coursework, and I appreciated Professor Lu's approach (selected materials, assignments, etc.) at getting us to recognize our own individual weak areas. This class worked well online.

I wished that assignments were due on Wed & Sun nights rather than Wed/Sat. I often found it difficult to get assignments turned in on time on Saturday nights. Sundays were usually my day off, but by the time I completed everything, it was already late.

e-cafe is a little boring, and I do not like political issues.

I learned a lot about tranlation

I really like the way Professor Lu designs her projects, they are very fun interesting. I swear that because I've learned so much from the projects on parallel texts, job interviews, website localization and subtitling; now that I'm confident to work on any types of translation in the future. From knowing zero about translation to gaining many translation techniques in just 4 months. This class is just wonderful for anybody that has Chinese language background and is seeking to upgrade his/her Chinese knowledge to a more superior level. Another aspect I really like about this course is that Professor Lu is willing to give instant feedback to all the assignments that we do. I think it helps to improve students' learning process very effectively.

Everything in the course is valuable.

The professor actually lets us to choose the topic that we are interested in. In this way, students are having more fun when they do the translation work. I also like the peer review part because it is also helpful for me to think out of the box. Moreover, the course schedule is very clear so I know what I have to do every week and there is also a guideline to follow for each assignment as well.

She is nice teacher. I learn a lot about translation.

I like it when professor asked us to translate the video.

I think the job interview translation was most important, because it helps us how to handle job interview in the future.

Although everything of this course is done online, but from my learning experience,I can tell that Professor Lu is an excellent language educator!

I highly recommend students to take this class because you can learn a lot of translation skills that we usually don't pay attention on. Overall, it is a great class.

The opportunity to practice writing in Chinese was extremely valuable, especially because it is not one of my strongest points. I was also able to learn a lot from my fellow classmates because we all had a chance to read each other's work and give feedback. It was largely a group effort rather than individual work.

I valued pretty much everything in this course; my Chinese has really improved. But if I HAD to pick something that was least valuable to me, it would be the quizzes because they certainly helped me review, but since we did it on our own time and without teacher supervision, I don't think it really had any educational value.

I didn't think the cd work was very valuable.

I found the cd-rom to be very difficult to use and not very helpful. I did not watch most of the videos. Instead of using a cd-rom, I think it would make more sense to offer video files for download, and then have quizzes on them within the eCafe system. The course improved my writing and reading, but not my listening abilities.

Very independent online class. I learned a lot about chinese sentence structures and rules that i would not have in a regular classroom.

the final project was the most valuable part because we got to use all the translation skill we learned to do this project.

The usage of translating skills being use for this course and for future use.

This was a very challenging course and the homework could take a while to finish, but I actually really valued the time and effort I put into my work because it definitely improved my Chinese. All the writing and translating was especially important to me because I learned so many new sentence structures and so many new characters this semester.

13. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

Laoshi is really enthusiastic and funny, and the days spent in the computer lab were especially beneficial because any jobs we might get will undoubtedly involve typing and reading Chinese on the computer. Plus, her intro to Google Docs made homework assignments so much easier! Great class, I will take her again if I can.

i like the in class discussions and group work for the midterm oral.

I liked the use of the computer lab as a part of class activities. Initially I had always been required to go to the lab on my own time, but this class utilized it as a weekly part of the lessons. All activities were relevant and beneficial. I also enjoyed the student presentations that were required of each student. A lot of new vocabulary was presented in those presentations but it allowed for the students to branch out and learn Chinese pertaining to subjects that were of interest to them rather than only learning what is taught in the course book.

Discussion of interesting topics.

I really like how we have oral presentations. By having oral presentations we have a chance to practice our Chinese.

I enjoyed the presentations the most, each person did something fun and unique.

The most influential aspect of this course was the constant speaking by the teacher in the language being taught. This allowed for better listening comprehension.

Lu Laoshi was very approachable, also willing to entertain our questions no matter how silly (or not silly--it's not like we were just goofing off) and tolerant, but correcting, of my many errors.ã??ã??

I like the presentation activities in which students can do a variety of things like making a movie, create a play or perform art like singing. All these activities motivate me to learn Chinese in fun ways :)

i don't like the fact that we have two different instructors even though it is understandable given the circumstances.

The book, it is too boring.

I did not enjoy reading the TV text, it's difficult and very long.

the videos that are supposed to go along with each lesson.

I did not like them mixing of heritage speakers with students who have only studied Chinese for a short time. Their grasp of everyday language use, vocabulary, and grammar far exceeded those of the other students, and, at times, I felt the course became more oriented to their level rather than the rest of the student level. The university should split the classes between those who speak Chinese in the home and those who do not. Additionally, I would have like a little more focus on the grammar. Class time was too much focused on reading the dialogues. More time should have been devoted to understanding the usage of the grammar and vocabulary outside of the specific dialogue.

I would always like more cultural or historical information, but that could just be me. Plus, I half-suspect I already know more than many students in this regard so perhaps this wouldn't be the best class for that...Moreover, the textbook focuses on economic matters which are largely irrelevant to me, but presumably not to most students.

One of the more enjoyable and rewarding Chinese classes I have had. The environment was conducive to learning while not being too overbearing nor too lighthearted.

The assignments where we could find the equivalent translations in the websites that were given because it showed us how professionals translated media articles and that is how we should be translating ours as well. A lot of times teachers will let us struggle and figure it out ourselves, but I don't necessary believe that is a good idea to learn if there was no example of how to properly do it in the first place. Having proper examples are a good way to learn.

assignment guideline should provide more details and example because I was confused by the guideline sometimes.

It was kind of difficult doing partner work with someone you have never met face to face before. We only communicated through phone or email which worked out fine. It's just something that I haven't done before but I thought it was really good because I figure other online classes wouldn't give you group work. Our professor probably thought that just because it's an online class, doesn't meet we can't meet other students so it's a really good idea!

Sometimes the website log me out suddenly and did not save my work automatically, which makes me have to do the work all over again. Technical problem is the only trouble for me to take an online course.

Sometimes will forget the due date of the assignment.

I could not get the feedback or answers of my questions from professor immediately.

Less interaction with teacher and classmates, pefer face-to-face conversation.

Lack of supervision. There are many deadlines and expectations from the online course instructor, but there is nobody to remind me to do the assignments or to take the tests.

I hate study online because I could not hear and see the instructor teaching.

The only negative side of the online course is that the editing window is not very user-friendly.

It was really convience about time.

I highly appreciate the level of organization in this course. It was very easy to fall into a routine of what is expected to be completed each week. I also felt that the variety of topics was very diverse and felt challenged to learn vocabulary terms in these different topics.

This was my first online course. I liked that I could learn the material on my time and complete the assignments accordingly. Because an online course only focuses on reading and writing, I felt I could really concentrate on those two skills. I would take a similiar online course again if it was offered at the 400 level.

I liked the flexibility in scheduling my work and the opportunity to communicate with classmates in different geographic area.

I liked the opportunity to use Chinese at my level with other students and receive feedback. I appreciate that I can take a class like this online since it is difficult to find a face to face Chinese class at this level. I learned a lot about online classes though it was a little intimidating at first. I really appreciated the organization. The "Model Essays" and "Grammar Clinics" helped a great deal.

That I could participate in this course without living in Hawaii. It is difficult to find Chinese classes - online opportunities are wonderful. This is unlike any third year college language class I have taken.

14. What did you like least about your online course experience?

Some times it was hard to know what was going on in class. Example there are some new vocabularies I don't know how to said it out loud.

I felt that the course was excellent.

I enjoyed it overall and can't think of anything off the top of my head.

I found the "Language Bank" section of Brix frustrating to use. I wish the vocabulary bank could all be accessed in one place for easy reference. I wanted to save vocabulary and patterns to make flashcards to study on my own and found I was doing lots of cut and paste and editing--so then I just copied the pages and looked back only if I thought I needed to. I think in a face to face class, taking paper and pencil notes I would have had better access to vocabulary and patterns and studied them more often. The "Rich Text Editor" was a little difficult to understand and use at first. Though a little unwieldy, it was fine. Some times I felt so busy with the Mon. Tues. Thurs. schedule I felt I didn 't have time to process all the information and ask questions. If the course was Mon. Wed. Fri. or Sun. Tues. Thurs, it would have been easier for me. CD was OK, but really a different course from the online material.

15. What changes would you make in the writing assignments?

In addition to free style writing, I think we could get twice the amount of learning if we could also read a Chinese literature (e.g. a news article, a book) and share and discuss our reflections afterwards. It would stimulate critical thinking, and enable us to practice high level Chinese words and expressions.

I like how we can choose what topics to write about. I think peer review is fun, it's an additional responsibility, but at the same time, it is also very similar to grammar clinics, which is a good practice.

I felt that they were very reasonable so I would not change them.

I liked doing CAFE every week because it was more of an informal writing style whereas small group writing was a discussion style and essays were a formal writing style. It exposed us to all types of writing styles.

I likes all the topics. They all had their uses. Some were harder than others but that was all right. There was some discontinuity between topics but I think that is all right for a class at this level.

Writing assignments would have been more beneficial to me if there was more discussion of vocabulary usage and grammatical patterns as related to the writing.

16. My overall evaluation of this course is...

This online course was really good and convince. But...because this is a language course I like it better to study in class than take it online.

Although the course can benefit from some changes in the writing assignment which I mentioned above, overall, this course was excellent for practicing Chinese and developing more natural expressions, and I would highly recommend it to student wanting to hone Chinese language skills.
