7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I like that the course is taught by a native speaker. The teacher is also a professional translator. I like that for each assignment, there are examples/samples so that I know how to do my work and what is expected of me. I like that we can look at our classmate's work. I like that Lu Laoshi is a strict grader. I like that she responds quickly to students' emails. She also grades work in a timely manner too. Having the schedule and assignment due dates lets me work at my own speed and finish work ahead of schedule. I'd take another class with Lu Laoshi.

group discussion
The various English to Chinese translation homework of the course is good practice and is very helpful. Weekly cafe is also fun to do.
Translating proper names, stories, movies.
The aspects of the course were most valuable were the readings that she provided to students and the feedback of homework. Ms. Lu always give us interesting reading to help us develop our English and Chinese grammar knowledge. When there were mistakes in the homework, she always gave us useful correct feedback.
I think the reading and the cafe were the most valuable because we learnt a lot of translation skill from the reading, and the cafe encourage students to write Chinese.

1. Reading articles which are about the skills for translation. 2. Assignments for translation helps me deeply understand how to translate sentences well.
being able to communicate with people from different culture background.
Master basic concepts and skills in English-Chinese translation.
As a native English speaker, this class was most helpful in teaching me the nuances of composition in Chinese. I would not recommend this class so much as a "language learning" environment in the sense that I didn't feel that my reading/writing/speaking skills increased, but that being said, this class was absolutely great for teaching me how to compose in my second language. That's not a skill that is easily worked into normal language learning coursework, and I appreciated Professor Lu's approach (selected materials, assignments, etc.) at getting us to recognize our own individual weak areas. This class worked well online.
This course helps students to become a better bilingual translator who connect Chinese and English very well.
I think it is good that we can do the translation of our favorite movie.

e-cafe is a little boring, and I do not like political issues.
I wished that assignments were due on Wed & Sun nights rather than Wed/Sat. I often found it difficult to get assignments turned in on time on Saturday nights. Sundays were usually my day off, but by the time I completed everything, it was already late.

the knowledge in translating chinese
This course helps developing my interest in English-Chinese translation. Every week we are taught by different translation technique. Teacher also provides example to make the content clearer. Also, we have discussion every week, and I think this helps a lot by making us brainstorm ideas and communicate with other classmates.
I learn to type chinese.
The instructor reponds to students' inquiries promptly
The exercises actually helped with each chapter.
This course provides me a lot useful and helpful strategies on translation :)

5. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The professor actually lets us to choose the topic that we are interested in. In this way, students are having more fun when they do the translation work. I also like the peer review part because it is also helpful for me to think out of the box. Moreover, the course schedule is very clear so I know what I have to do every week and there is also a guideline to follow for each assignment as well.
I like it when professor asked us to translate the video.
I really like the way Professor Lu designs her projects, they are very fun interesting. I swear that because I've learned so much from the projects on parallel texts, job interviews, website localization and subtitling; now that I'm confident to work on any types of translation in the future. From knowing zero about translation to gaining many translation techniques in just 4 months. This class is just wonderful for anybody that has Chinese language background and is seeking to upgrade his/her Chinese knowledge to a more superior level. Another aspect I really like about this course is that Professor Lu is willing to give instant feedback to all the assignments that we do. I think it helps to improve students' learning process very effectively.
She is nice teacher. I learn a lot about translation.
I learned a lot about tranlation
Everything in the course is valuable.

I think the job interview translation was most important, because it helps us how to handle job interview in the future.

5. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Getting feedback from other students about our essays.
I think the most valuable to me is the essay.
Writing essays and responses were the most valuable aspects.
useful in real life
The opportunity to practice writing in Chinese was extremely valuable, especially because it is not one of my strongest points. I was also able to learn a lot from my fellow classmates because we all had a chance to read each other's work and give feedback. It was largely a group effort rather than individual work.
6. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I didn't think the cd work was very valuable.
none
I found the cd-rom to be very difficult to use and not very helpful. I did not watch most of the videos. Instead of using a cd-rom, I think it would make more sense to offer video files for download, and then have quizzes on them within the eCafe system. The course improved my writing and reading, but not my listening abilities.
none. it was a great course
I valued pretty much everything in this course; my Chinese has really improved. But if I HAD to pick something that was least valuable to me, it would be the quizzes because they certainly helped me review, but since we did it on our own time and without teacher supervision, I don't think it really had any educational value.

5. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The most valuable things which i learnt this semester are some translation strategies and the differnces between chinese and english.
The usage of translating skills being use for this course and for future use.
Very independent online class. I learned a lot about chinese sentence structures and rules that i would not have in a regular classroom.
the discussion forum
This was a very challenging course and the homework could take a while to finish, but I actually really valued the time and effort I put into my work because it definitely improved my Chinese. All the writing and translating was especially important to me because I learned so many new sentence structures and so many new characters this semester.
the final project was the most valuable part because we got to use all the translation skill we learned to do this project.
6. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
no
Homework loads are really heavy.
I think doing the reflection at the end of each article we are assigned to read. I dont mind answering comprehesion questions, but sometimes, the questions asking us what we learned and what parts left us with the most impression is kind of repetitive.
Everything was equally challenging and required just as much time and effort.
the Cafe was the least valuable part.

how to translate English into Chinese properly
We learn a lot of skill about translation.

Free writing part, so we can write our own thoughts.
I think the cafe assignment and the reading reflection are valuable. The cafe assignment really give me a chance to give opinion and I can learn something by looking others opinion. The reading reflection give me a lots of information about how to translate English to Chinese, it really helpful.
Mrs Chen provided us a lot of chances to improve our Chinese translate ability. And she taught us many useful translate methods, which help me a lot in.

translation

group project was the most valuable for us to work together on technical translation.
online class
Throughout the semester, we had different kind of project which help to improve not only our translation knowledge, it's also helpful for our daily studying.
I learned what kind of interview topics I should pay attention on. Also, learning how to do subtitle is fun for me.
I think the cafe assignment and the project are most valuable. The cafe assignment can give me think about whatever the weekly topic and look at others respond. The project give me a chance and practice translate different material from English to Chinese.

I love this course. =)
Great course!! After moved to Hawaii, I already put my Chinese writing skill aside for a long time beside speaking Chinese with friends and family. This course is great for refreshing my Chinese writing skill. I learned a lot from this course.
I think overall evaluation of this course is good because all the assignment are related and I did learn something from it. But sometime it just too much assignment, especially during the week we have midterm exam and project and paper due.
15. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
everything is good.
not much, since this is a online cource, only consideration is website problems, with will delay students homework
this is a perfect course nothing can be improve, i learned a lot.
Add some group activities.
I think if there is more clear instruction or maybe provide a example on the assignment that would be easy to do because sometime I just don't know what we to need to do.
Overall is good.

13. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Discussion of interesting topics.
I really like how we have oral presentations. By having oral presentations we have a chance to practice our Chinese.
I enjoyed the presentations the most, each person did something fun and unique.
I like the presentation activities in which students can do a variety of things like making a movie, create a play or perform art like singing. All these activities motivate me to learn Chinese in fun ways :)
the instructor's energetic approach to teaching chinese.
Lu Laoshi was very approachable, also willing to entertain our questions no matter how silly (or not silly--it's not like we were just goofing off) and tolerant, but correcting, of my many errors.ã??ã??
The most influential aspect of this course was the constant speaking by the teacher in the language being taught. This allowed for better listening comprehension.
Laoshi is really enthusiastic and funny, and the days spent in the computer lab were especially beneficial because any jobs we might get will undoubtedly involve typing and reading Chinese on the computer. Plus, her intro to Google Docs made homework assignments so much easier! Great class, I will take her again if I can.
i like the in class discussions and group work for the midterm oral.
I liked the use of the computer lab as a part of class activities. Initially I had always been required to go to the lab on my own time, but this class utilized it as a weekly part of the lessons. All activities were relevant and beneficial. I also enjoyed the student presentations that were required of each student. A lot of new vocabulary was presented in those presentations but it allowed for the students to branch out and learn Chinese pertaining to subjects that were of interest to them rather than only learning what is taught in the course book.
14. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The book, it is too boring.
nothing
I did not enjoy reading the TV text, it's difficult and very long.
none
the videos that are supposed to go along with each lesson.
I would always like more cultural or historical information, but that could just be me. Plus, I half-suspect I already know more than many students in this regard so perhaps this wouldn't be the best class for that...Moreover, the textbook focuses on economic matters which are largely irrelevant to me, but presumably not to most students.
I did not like them mixing of heritage speakers with students who have only studied Chinese for a short time. Their grasp of everyday language use, vocabulary, and grammar far exceeded those of the other students, and, at times, I felt the course became more oriented to their level rather than the rest of the student level. The university should split the classes between those who speak Chinese in the home and those who do not. Additionally, I would have like a little more focus on the grammar. Class time was too much focused on reading the dialogues. More time should have been devoted to understanding the usage of the grammar and vocabulary outside of the specific dialogue.
i don't like the fact that we have two different instructors even though it is understandable given the circumstances.
15. My overall evaluation of this course is...
It was fun. I learned a lot
I really enjoyed taking this class and I learned a lot about Chinese cultures.
Overall, I felt this was a great course, difficult, but fun. I learned a lot about China, especially the problems in China.

The course was a good stepping stone to more advanced studies of Chinese. However, as noted in Section 14, I feel there should be some adjustments made to create a better learning environment for ALL the students in the course.
Great!!! Like I said, I'll take her again if I can.
i enjoyed this class a lot.
One of the more enjoyable and rewarding Chinese classes I have had. The environment was conducive to learning while not being too overbearing nor too lighthearted.
16. Other comments:
You are very enthusiastic and each class was never boring. I liked that there is a blog for Chinese class. The blog is really useful because there are help links and an online calendar.

The textbook is really interesting; the topics are current event issues, and I enjoyed learning to discuss human rights, economic values, etc, all in Chinese.
so far so good.

skills of translation
The assignments where we could find the equivalent translations in the websites that were given because it showed us how professionals translated media articles and that is how we should be translating ours as well. A lot of times teachers will let us struggle and figure it out ourselves, but I don't necessary believe that is a good idea to learn if there was no example of how to properly do it in the first place. Having proper examples are a good way to learn.

flexible time to finish work.
I could complete my assignments whenever at a time that was appropriate for me.
I have learned more from my classmates and built friendships.
i can use my time according to my schedule, i can finish the work at the beginning of the week if i knew that i have something to do during the weekend
easy access to assignments
18. What did you like least about your online course experience?
you may not get as many education as in regular classes
It was kind of difficult doing partner work with someone you have never met face to face before. We only communicated through phone or email which worked out fine. It's just something that I haven't done before but I thought it was really good because I figure other online classes wouldn't give you group work. Our professor probably thought that just because it's an online class, doesn't meet we can't meet other students so it's a really good idea!
assignment guideline should provide more details and example because I was confused by the guideline sometimes.
i sometimes forget to hand in homeworks and one time i cannot connet to the site so i miss the deadline of handing in the homework

Jung Lu-Chen is a great teacher and her class is worth to take.
Even though this class was particular difficult for me, I definitely learned a lot and will definitely apply what I learned into future Chinese language courses.

I feel like I became a well-organized student. I can control my time efficiently.

some assignments were hard to complete even though the materials were not hard. Maybe there are some easier way to do those assignments.
I think reading response is unnecessary, we can practice when we learn by doing the assignment instead of doing the response.
It would be nice if the instruction for homework is both in English and Chinese.
Every thing just perfect in this couse.

16. What did you like most about your online course experience?
Because everyone has different work and study schedule, online class gives them the time flexibility to complete the home work.
it is a good way to communicate with other classmates and view each other's articles and essays
Share other students assignment, and learn from them.
I can get feedback from the Instructor which point out my mistakes and encourage me on doing assignments.
Online course privides a different learning experience for me.
Flexible schedule and open discussion on every topics.
I have more flexble on arranging time, so that I can use my time more freely and have more time to schedule my work and study.
flexibility
Online course is a good experience, because time is really flexible and we can do our work anywhere we like, anytime we like!
I like how we can organize our own time instead of going to class. and I think we can learn as same as the amount like a in class course.
time flexibility of doing the assignments
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Overall, this course is very impressive, and I learned a lot.
It is a very meaningful class overall. It is really helpful.
Very good.
I will take it again.
I really like this coruse, Profeesor Lu-Chen's class is easy to understand and I did learned a lot of the translation skills her.
Professor does not provide enough help to complete the assignments, also, the grading standard is not clear that we do not know how to improve.
This is an intersting on-line course, and I have learned lots of new knowledge.
very helpful and I learned a lot from this class.
This is a good class that I learn a lot about the job interview! That is a good practice for us to prepare for our future interview. In addition, I also learned a lot of things in this class, such as website evaluation!
I think this class is a fairly easy class. less work than what I expected which is good for me.
It is good. I would strongly recommend my friends to take this course.
18. Other comments:
Good professor. I learn a lot in her class.
Great course, Great Instructor.
The class website was sometimes an obstacle of online course, please make sure the system was user-friendly.
This is a good class! But there is still a little thing that the teacher need to improve. The time of deadline should be flexible!
I think the grading system is good if students can actually know how the professor grade our homework.

14. What did you like most about your online course experience?
I enjoy the flexible schedule that I can do the homework and discussion at home any time I want without a time limit.
online discussion rather than a face-to-face format
I can complete the course materials and assignments at home and can also arrange my personal time to finish all assignments earlier.
I could control my own timing of when to complete the homework.
It works around my schedule and I have more free time without going to class.
Flexible time.
this class really make learn and use the language and reinforce our language skill
Professor provides lots of discussion opportunity to students. It helps me to learn more than other classes. Also, assignments in the class are meaningful and interesting.
I learn a lot from this course, but I did not like to study on line. I love to learn face to face with instructor.
The flexibility and convenience of the course. Also, the internet makes it possible for me to ask questions and receive the answer back from the instructor almost immediately.
No need to go to school and waste the transportation time.
I like this online course because I can do the assignments anytime and anywhere I want. Also I don't have to go to school everyday to take the class, so I can save that time to do other things.
I like do my homework in anytime on online and just follow my instructor's direction to do my assignment on time, my grade don't affect in my course. so, this course i did very well than other courses, also it is my first language in this course, it much easier than other course.
I learned a lot in the online course. I love this course very much. The assignments assigned reasonably and I have enough of the time to finish this assignments. I would like to take this instructor's courses again.
We don't need to go to school and save our time from the bus witting. We can finish assignment at the place that I want and the time that I like. We can have more time to the other course, and get good grade in all the course.
It is a good experience. I like the communication part the most.
15. What did you like least about your online course experience?
Sometimes the website log me out suddenly and did not save my work automatically, which makes me have to do the work all over again. Technical problem is the only trouble for me to take an online course.
it might be complicated or difficulity if I am not familiar with the computer sofeware
Sometimes there are some problems regarding to the system of the Website, so I can't submit or complete my assignments successfully.
I could not get the feedback or answers of my questions from professor immediately.
Sometimes will forget the due date of the assignment.
Less face to face communication.
NA
I hate study online because I could not hear and see the instructor teaching.
Lack of supervision. There are many deadlines and expectations from the online course instructor, but there is nobody to remind me to do the assignments or to take the tests.
Less interaction with teacher and classmates, pefer face-to-face conversation.
One thing that I don't like the online course is that I don't get to interact with the teacher and my classmates face to face.
This course is not hard for me, but some course in online is not easy, because sometimes i couldn't face to face ask my instructor about assignment questions, this is a problem for me.
Sometime the assignments are little bit difficult, but I can learn a lot for doing those assignments.
I like online course. But sometime computer system is not really good.
The only negative side of the online course is that the editing window is not very user-friendly.

13. What did you like most about your online course experience?
Online class structures which encourage student participation and think more about themselves. A good chance to all sharing feeling and idea together.
I like being able to do assignments at my own convenient times.
This was my first online course. I liked that I could learn the material on my time and complete the assignments accordingly. Because an online course only focuses on reading and writing, I felt I could really concentrate on those two skills. I would take a similiar online course again if it was offered at the 400 level.
very stimulating and efficient
Flexibility and less stressful
Learn the new web tool, communicate effective with classmates and instructor.
I can work on the assignments anytime at the comfort of my home.
The feedback the students responded.
I highly appreciate the level of organization in this course. It was very easy to fall into a routine of what is expected to be completed each week. I also felt that the variety of topics was very diverse and felt challenged to learn vocabulary terms in these different topics.
It was really convience about time.
That I could participate in this course without living in Hawaii. It is difficult to find Chinese classes - online opportunities are wonderful. This is unlike any third year college language class I have taken.
I liked the opportunity to use Chinese at my level with other students and receive feedback. I appreciate that I can take a class like this online since it is difficult to find a face to face Chinese class at this level. I learned a lot about online classes though it was a little intimidating at first. I really appreciated the organization. The "Model Essays" and "Grammar Clinics" helped a great deal.
I liked the flexibility in scheduling my work and the opportunity to communicate with classmates in different geographic area.
14. What did you like least about your online course experience?
1.Flexible time 2.Less trouble to looking for parking 3.Teacher' respond quickly 4.Increase participation 5.Topic closly to our living
This online course doesn't allowed me to contribute to the discussion more readily than in a face-to-face format.
I enjoyed it overall and can't think of anything off the top of my head.
deadlines for the work didn't agree with my schedule.
lack interaction
The Text Editor doesn't always work.
none
I felt that the course was excellent.
Some times it was hard to know what was going on in class. Example there are some new vocabularies I don't know how to said it out loud.
-- snipped --
I found the "Language Bank" section of Brix frustrating to use. I wish the vocabulary bank could all be accessed in one place for easy reference. I wanted to save vocabulary and patterns to make flashcards to study on my own and found I was doing lots of cut and paste and editing--so then I just copied the pages and looked back only if I thought I needed to. I think in a face to face class, taking paper and pencil notes I would have had better access to vocabulary and patterns and studied them more often. The "Rich Text Editor" was a little difficult to understand and use at first. Though a little unwieldy, it was fine. Some times I felt so busy with the Mon. Tues. Thurs. schedule I felt I didn 't have time to process all the information and ask questions. If the course was Mon. Wed. Fri. or Sun. Tues. Thurs, it would have been easier for me. CD was OK, but really a different course from the online material.

15. What changes would you make in the writing assignments?
nothing especial
In addition to free style writing, I think we could get twice the amount of learning if we could also read a Chinese literature (e.g. a news article, a book) and share and discuss our reflections afterwards. It would stimulate critical thinking, and enable us to practice high level Chinese words and expressions.
I liked doing CAFE every week because it was more of an informal writing style whereas small group writing was a discussion style and essays were a formal writing style. It exposed us to all types of writing styles.
It is ok as it is.
I like how we can choose what topics to write about. I think peer review is fun, it's an additional responsibility, but at the same time, it is also very similar to grammar clinics, which is a good practice.
The professor will correct my grammar, I have a completed understanding after she corrects it.
I felt that they were very reasonable so I would not change them.
Quit don't know yet...Thinking...
Writing assignments would have been more beneficial to me if there was more discussion of vocabulary usage and grammatical patterns as related to the writing.
I likes all the topics. They all had their uses. Some were harder than others but that was all right. There was some discontinuity between topics but I think that is all right for a class at this level.
16. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Good! Can communicate with teacher as friend, topics are closly our living.
Although the course can benefit from some changes in the writing assignment which I mentioned above, overall, this course was excellent for practicing Chinese and developing more natural expressions, and I would highly recommend it to student wanting to hone Chinese language skills.
Great, the teacher was very active and helpful and kept up with all student's postings. She gave prompt feedback.
I like it overall. It allows me to learn in a relax or less constrainting environment.
this class is really helpful to improve the chinese writing skills
excellent.
I like the course so much.
very well planned-out!
This online course was really good and convince. But...because this is a language course I like it better to study in class than take it online.
Good - I will recommend it to others.
It was an excellent course. I would take similar class. I hope the Brix site will be open for a little while so I can go back look over some of the vocabulary and materials.
It was my first on-line course and it was a good experience.
