17. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Learning about different areas of Hawaii. A lot of information that I didn't know.
N/A
I really liked the section of the class that covered the Mahele.
Class discussions
Learning more about the history of Hawaiian land and the Native Hawaiian people's connection with it. Understanding the ongoing protests and dilemmas facing the native population and what is being done about it.
Looking at Issue with the Ethics farm work.
I appreciate how she builds a strong foundation in our knowledge of ethics, how to read coulter maps, reading and presenting a powerpoint presentation on each chapter...was very informative and re-enforces the reading assignments by individual reports.
Hawaiian culture and relevance to the embodiment of environment.
I enjoyed the ethics assignment because it really made us think critically about the issues at hand.
The interactive, forced active learning, rather than a teacher just bellowing at you.
I have never come to think about issue in Hawaii till I take this course. I am grad now I can be aware of issues!
18. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Not enough time to finish the presentations.
The assigned readings that we did not have enough time to fully go over and discuss in class.
N/A
The paper that required us to discuss if the Mahele was ethical from the different viewpoints. It was extremely repetitive and became redundant after the 2nd approach. Maybe shorten the length of this paper requirement.
Not sure.
Nothing was least valuable.
I think all aspects of the class were valuable.
the classmates that wouldn't speak up

19. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
The information that was presented.
My instructor and the different perspectives my classmates had.
The ethical issues concerning land use in Hawaii such as the overdevelopment of the land, the mishandling of the iwi, and the land being taken over by foreigners.
The ethical farm work taught and th many impacting issued share hopefully the topics have results
how my understanding about land tenure was deepened. I learned how the MÄ?hele affected the native people in a negative way and how just how they were able to dispossess the indigenous people from the land.
cultural research based
The injustices done to the Hawaiian people by the Mahele.
All presentation and issue that are profound in Hawaii.

25. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
None
In her lessons she should give clearer background information on the issues that we are discussing. She needs to be more active as a teacher. There were too many student discussions and presentations where students only talked about what they thought, she did not give her own incite on issues or elaborate enough on things. Though she may be sweet and we are talking about Hawaiian issues she should deliver and teach the course in a manner where you can't tell which side she is already on. You could see her bias in a her course content, and assignments given.
Structure the discussion of the Broken Trust book differently so there is more time to cover the entire book.
Inform students of their grades every week during the time of the course.
By making sure each student really knows the difference in each ethical approach
She is doing a fantastic job!!!!!
Structured lessons of reference
I thought she was a great professor and enjoyed it all.

Mahalo for all you do. All the insights that you have shared is invaluable. I do appreciate the course for opening my eyes to a lot more.
Thank you Professor McGregor! The mysteries I had about Hawaii were finally answered through this class such as the reason for protests, the political leaders of Hawaii, and the ongoing issues. Mahalo.
Had fun in this class filled with different people and views which made it very entertaining.
Thanks again! Have a nice summer!
Thank you for teaching this semester!

16. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The historical aspects of Hawaii and how they relate to the modern day.
I really loved the fact that Professor McGregor allowed us to be invoked during class. I felt like every presentation gave me valuable knowledge and enabled me to expand my understanding of the topics brought up in class.
Great notes, videos, and professor knowledge.
The oral presentations were probably the most valuable part of the class because they allowed students to share their own perspectives. They also stimulated interesting discussions. I also enjoyed meeting personally with you outside of class to speak about the final presentation.
Everything!
17. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I felt like Professor McGregor could have posted up the PowerPoints online. In these terms, the least valuable would be the laulima site since nothing was posted on there.
None!
The written assignments were probably least valuable. They helped to reinforce the readings, but were not as important as the readings themselves, and definitely less important than the in-class discussions and presentations.
NA
18. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...

Possibly make it more about coaching students how to become effective oral communicators rather than having them put together a presentation that they fumble through.
Post up PowerPoints online.
None!
A lot more could come out of the class if students were held to a higher standard, especially for their presentations. Perhaps one class could include a workshop on making an effective presentation or a visit to hamilton to learn about the various relevant resources available to us. This was somewhat accomplished in the one on one meetings with you but could be more emphasized. Perhaps there could be more "checkpoint" deadlines for the final presentation to make sure students are on track.
None, I was pleased.

The many facts I learned about Hawaiian history and culture
My professor being one of the stronger forces of the Hawaiian movement.
how it changed/formed my perspective on many pressing issues in Hawaii. Prior to this class, I had very little to no knowledge of the material that we cover. Now I feel that I can hold an educated conversation about cultural knowledge and controversies in Hawaii.
The historical accounts that differ so greatly from my high school experience.
Learning more about the Hawaiian sovereignty in this time period especially with the government and the teachers different view on the Hawaiian monarchy in the olden days.
The political view and laws that I had no idea existed before this class.
knowing that the US annexation of HAwaii was illegal and we should not be a part of the US
Learning from the lectures and readings.
The social issues that were central to the material, like the issue of Native Hawaiian sovereignty.

Small quizzes to reinforce understanding
Loved the course. If anything, I would say that it would be beneficial to make the class more discussion-based because we all have our own background and perspectives that we can share and grow from.
During the beginning of the semester, you were all over the place jumping around different areas of your lecture. During the later part of the semester, you seemed a lot more organized.
If we could have the course taught to us in ways other than lecture and powerpoint, in ways which are engaging and forces us to think critically, if Professor McGregor was able to bring in other senses for us to learn with other than visual. This would be the perfect environment for us to learn this AMAZINGLY IMPORTANT information of Hawaii most do not know!
Try not to show that you don't really know some things on a subject especially with a class full of non-Hawaiians.
Davianna McGregor is a great teacher and she goes into depth with everything. My one suggestion is just to go slower on the presentations.
it was good
There were too many slides to get through in one class period. Maybe condense the number of slides for the topics.
18. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?

N/A
The readings sometimes did not reflect what is actually on the presentations. But, during the later part of the semester, it seemed to flow well with the presentaiton.
Nothing at all.
The readings were very interesting I wouldnt change anything.
they were fine
Shorten the readings. Organize them better on laulima.
24. Please list: suggestions for improving the TA's teaching style and methods.
Review what was taught in class
TAs were very ineffective. They were lazy and unorganized.
Actually try to engage students. Encourage critical thinking and discussion.
Exhibit a stronger sense of authority over having students to participate equally and not just have one student talk the entire class lab section.
They needed to engage us as well, to correct where we needed correcting.
The TA's were amazing, they helped us a lot and even helped us on areas for the exam that we didn't quite get.
The TA's did a really good job and providing perspective, their teaching style and methods are just fine.
it was good
Reinforce the ideas and concepts learned in class instead of just giving out the answers.

Great course, I absolutely loved it. It was just a shame that, it being an OC course, not many people spoke up, leaving class discussion to always be between the same 3-4 students.
It was a great course that encouraged independent research, thinking, and presentation of concepts.
