13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He was extremely encouraging throughout the entire semester, and was very passionate about this class.
He is really knowledgeable in this area of study
Prof. Kondo's strengths as a teacher would be his preparedness in getting the resource materials out early. The videos that he gives out to his students via Laulima can be used to help with either the two major research papers or the other Critical Thinking-type assignments that are also on Laulima.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I actually love this class the way it is, but I wouldn't mind going to a class on campus to listen to his lectures. Online works just fine though!
Maybe make the instructions for the class clearer in the beginning of the semester
One possible change to Prof. Kondo would be to alter the state of his office hours to make it half an hour earlier. This would ensure students doing the research paper to get the necessary information and still have time for their other assignments.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
We always received emails with encouragement to try our best and to make sure we turned everything in.
Always made sure to email students about updates
Prof. Kondo showed concern for his students by encouraging them to drop by his office if they have questions regarding the assignments. Face-to-face conversations are more effective than simply sending out e-mails but it requires planning on the student's part.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would most definitely recommend Thomas Kondo to other students because I believe they would enjoy learning while feeling constant support from him!
Yes because you learn a lot about Japanese Literature in this class, without it being overbearing like other classes.
For those taking courses related to Japanese culture, you will eventually have to take this course. Although getting to the prof. during the office hours might be problematic to some, there are plenty of time to do his assignments and the amount of assignments given out is a little less when compared to similar literature-based courses.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
I hope that I can take more classes from him. I actually wasn't looking forward to this class because I figured we'd be learning about many different types of countries, but instead there was a strong focus on Japanese literature, a country in which I have a deep passion for. I also can't stress enough the encouragement he gave to us, I've rarely experienced this in teachers, and it's nice knowing there is a teacher on campus like him!
Thank you for being a good teacher. Please keep offering this online course because i think a lot of students benefit from it
Prof. Kondo is still getting used to the Laulima system so expect delays in his updating the Discussions and Private Messages pages. If you do not see something in that page that should have been updated, do not hesitate to talk to him about it (during office hours of course).
18. Other comments:
I look forward to taking more classes from Thomas Kondo.
A course that while basic in writing, it does open up a window into the Japanese culture and may even get students interested in studying it for future electives.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He really motivates the students to continue to work-hard and to help us to understand the content. If people missed an assignment, he nicely gives us another chance to turn them in, and realizes it if students to miss an assignment. He was an understanding teacher as well.
Every discussion had it's due date available so I knew when they were due.
Mr. Kondo is a kind instructor. He encourages his class to succeed and to enjoy the class.
Mr. Kondo is a good online teacher who is able to keep the lessons engaging.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I think some assignment should have more explanation in how to complete it. I got confused at first.
None
that he check his email more because students may have sent important emails. Not replying to emails regarding grades and assignments for over a week is not acceptable, especially if multiple emails are sent during that time frame.
I think students would appreciate to see an update on their grades on a weekly bases.
Speed up response times and iron out kinks in the syllabus.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He emails students to update in assignments and grades. He also catches if students are missing assignments and notifies them to complete them to get some credit.
He reminded us with announcements that due dates were coming up and replied to some discussions with his opinion to ours.
He encourages students who have fallen behind to make the effort to turn in their work. He lets the students know that they can still receive a decent grade.
Mr. Kondo extended deadlines, and worked with students who had problems submitting things.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes I would recommend him to other students because he is a very kind person who understands if students are struggling or in some situation. He is very knowledgeable in his certain area, and can see the passion for it. The online class is also convenient too for students.
Yes, this is an interesting subject in itself and he does a good job in teaching it.
I would recommend Mr. Kondo as an instructor. He allows structure and guidance thru out the semester and wants to see everyone succeed in his class.
I always do if people need to fulfill a writing class on literature.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Thank you for recommending some of the literature. I actually liked the books I read, and was surprised of myself in finishing all of them. I would of liked to read other books as well.
Mr. Kondo is a good teacher. I wish him all the best.
Thank you for being a great instructor, as always!
18. Other comments:
Thank you for always helping me. I felt that I have learned a lot from this class, and now I have interest in reading, in general. If it wasn't for this class, I would of continue to not have an interest in reading books, but now I am very curious in other books and am looking forward to purchasing some literature and read them :)

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He knows Japanese very well and shows his passion for the language through his teachings.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
The streaming videos I had problems with them. The only ones I could really see and hear were the ones that were made later. Like when we had a test or something like that. The ones that were done in mass in the beginning of semester just did not work for me.Which made it really hard to do my work.
Probably more oral test for the online classes.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
If we were concerns about our grades or course material and emailed him, he would get back to us quickly to answer our questions.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes. He is a very good teacher. He willing to listen and help you figure out how best to do your work so that you can succeed.
Yes, Had taken his class before and gotten a "D" and wanted to take his class again, because he is a very good professor.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
No survey responses were found.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He understands that being a student can be difficult at times and is very understanding of each student. He also know what he is talking about and provides the class with everything we need to pass the class, through his video lectures.
Kondo-sensei is great with handling and distributing information. He gives his students enough time to study before the exam and perform the quizzes and tests that are assigned. I personally love this online course because I am a self learner and it is easier for me to study at home, rather than in a lecture setting. Kondo-sensei is good with explanation and replying to concerns via email.
Learning a foreign language is difficult but Kondo sensei made it interesting and made sure students were able to feel comfortable with whatever level they are at.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I would have liked to have a little more assignments throughout the semester just to keep a consistent usage of the laulima system.
I would not change anything at all. His tests and assignments are direct and to the point. I have no problems with his teachings on my end.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He was always willing to talk about any concerns with tests, quizzes, and assignments. He also was very understanding of everything.
Kondon-sensei reaches out through emails weekly and sends reminders to what assignments are due and what day and time. He is very on top of his teaching this year. He also gives students second chances if they miss an assignment to redo it for the maximum points. Overall, he wants everyone to have a fair chance, to learn at their own pace, and pass with flying colors. He wants everyone to have the equal opportunity to receive a good grade.
Kondo sensei showed concern by making sure to provide hints and assistance for students to ensure success in the course.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes I would. This class is a very good class to take, especially for students because even though it is online, I was still able to learn Japanese and it was also much more manageable than going to UH Manoa's class almost everyday. I even learned the same amount despite what most people think about online classes.
Yes! Absolutely! His directions and teaching skills are great. He is a great teacher to learn from for any Japanese course.
Yes, Kondo sensei was very willing to help students learn the language and made sure that everyone was able to be successful.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Very good teacher, I am going to take his new 201 class when it becomes available in fall 2014
Nothing but thank you for being a great teacher and giving your students nothing but your patience. You are truly a wonderful mentor.
18. Other comments:
