13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
|
| This course is online and was pretty straight forward. Quizes had assigned dates, and he gave a fair amount of time for discussion post. He always keeps his students updated. |
| He plays the devil's advocate really well, which is essential for giving different views of potentially controversial topics. |
| I appreciated that the Subir would encourage participation but ultimately placing the responsibility on the student. His critique of posted discussions were never damning...instead it offered a different perspective and encouraged additional research. |
| He seemed to know a lot about his subject and the material we were instructed to learn and read up
on. His attitude and support was positive and very much in line with what I respect and look for in
an instructor. I would definitely recommend his class to anyone. |
| He was very responsive in a detailed manner. |
| He's very accessible, and really encouraged us to voice ourown opinions. He really tried to get us to think deeply about the week's topics, and usually gave feedback on what we wrote. |
| Subir Kole is very knowledgeable and professional. |
| I enjoyed getting his comments on our blogs about the weekly subject matter. It made the class more interactive considering it was an online class. |
|
|
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
|
| I would maybe suggest having video chat, or posting up videos of himself discussing assignments or any homeworks he assigns. I also noticed that a lot of the articles used were out of date. Lots has changed, and a lot of our topics came from this past war. |
| It would be helpful to have resource material available ahead of time for planning. I find it
helpful to read and than take a few days and than read again to better grasp material in the
online sections. |
| I would encourage a disclaimer that people can share their opinions, but they shouldn't take things personally. Also that to give opinions more bearing in the conversation that students utilize evidence to back up their claims. |
| None |
| For most of the semester the assignments were posted well in advance of the end of the week but
there were a couple of times where the assignment wasn't posted at the start of the week. In any
other situation this would have posed a problem for those of us who are pressed for time but when
this happened he just extended the deadline. I REALLY liked that he commented directly on our
writings and gave us that feedback. Definitely please keep that up! |
| Maybe try lecturing through the blackboard program so other people are more
stimulated to learn? |
| For me, it was frustrating that the week's discussion topics were posted on different days throughout the week. In our syllabus it said we would have more than a week for our discussions (Tues-next friday), but some weeks we only had a few days. I know it doesn't take long to read and post a response, but I try to organize my work for all my classes so I know what days I should do that class's homework. Not knowing when it would be posted and when it would be due, made it difficult to stay organized. Also for the Short Writing Assigment, we were given the topics later than what was stated in the syllabus. I know the syllabus is never concrete, but I was really banking on having the topics extra early (2 months before the due date), so that I could take my time with it. Because we got it a little later than that, I have to fit it into my schedule of all the other end-of-the-semester work for my other classes. |
| To offer a more leveled way of explaining curriculum. |
| the videos that he assigned were too long for an online class. It was very frustrating because often they would take several minutes for "buffering" during the presentation which made them even longer. I would suggest shorter ones and on a different medium than what was given this year. |
|
|
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
|
| Subir Kole would post his personal responces to ours when we would reply on the discussion pages. We would also recieve numerous emails that would keep us updated on quzies and future assignments. |
| He actually was open to their feelings, like in a certain situation where he felt that he offended someone he was quick to apologize and correct the misunderstanding. |
| I appreciated the email reminders and excellent suggested articles. |
| He commented on all of our writing and posed questions back to us that pushed us to gain more
introspection into our responses/thoughts. |
| He responds the best that he can to our discussions. |
| Pretty much the same as question 13. |
| He was well organized and gave friendly reminding emails. |
| his reminders of what was due was very helpful. We older full time students can be forgetful so this helped a lot. |
|
|
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
|
| I would recommend Subir. His class very straight forward with little questions to ask. |
| Yes. It's an interesting way to look at Political Science. |
| Yes...great environment. |
| Absolutely. For the above mentioned reasons. He was well-informed, helpful and pushed students
to learn and investigate more. |
| Yes because he seems to genuinely care about teaching. |
| I would because he's a great teacher who's obviously very knowledgable about the subject. He responds quickly to both emails and discussion posts, and is always encouraging us to do our best. |
| Yes. Although sometimes online courses can be difficult to keep up with. |
| HIGHLY! |
|
|
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
|
| Thank you. |
| He is smart~ |
| Thanks for a great course, I REALLY enjoyed it! |
|
|
18. Other comments:
|
| Politics is not really a strong subject of mines, but I felt I somewhat had a clue on what was going on throughout the course. |
| I enjoyed the weekly writings but, in all honestly, the mini tests 'short exams' that were bi weekly for
us to do by that Sunday were a real waste of time and kind of struck me as simply busy work. Other
than that minor critique, I really, really enjoyed the class! |

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| I felt the individual presentations were most valuable. Each student was required to analyze in depth
the previous night's reading and give a presentation to the class. This allowed the class to gain a
better understanding of a challenging and long reading while gaining valuable knowledge of the
week's theme on foreign policy. |
| Because there was so much reading, I found that projects/assignments that forced me to really evaluate the reading ultimately led me to getting into it more. Even when we were dividing up the reading, it was beneficial to me because it made me examine that section closely and gain a better understanding of it, rather than just skimming over the whole thing which is what I did otherwise. |
| I think the progression of the topics was effective in helping me understand foreign policy better. The readings were diverse enough to give many different perspectives. The openness of the discussions was also helpful in seeing many different opinions on certain subjects. I think having open discussions also helped build better communication between the students with each other and the instructor. |
| I enjoyed all aspects of the course. In particular, I enjoyed the student presentations and videos watched in class. |
| Some of Professor Kole's selections from the readings were excellent, i.e. the Israel Lobby, and America: The Terrorist State. He also made sure to ask many pertinent questions which were thought-provoking and added to a lively debate. |
| The readings, and subsequent discussions were the most valuable aspects. |
| Subir is an excellent instructor and is very knowledgeable about the subject. He also is always
available for extra help, questions, or any extra discussion you may need. |
|
|
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| Some of the readings weren't as valuable as others. Although the nature of having a vast amount of reading means that some things might be regurgitated more than once, the readings only sometimes did so during the course of this term. |
| The course format was fine, but some readings should be axed such as the health and environment writers. Better writers and research simply needs to be selected. |
| I felt that the instructor had no interest in hearing your opinions on anything unless you had a wealth of knowledge. Only the graduate students in the class had anything interesting to say to the proffesor. I felt left out despite the fact that this class relates to my major and i had alot to say. |
| I think there was a failure on the students' part because most students failed to interact in the discussion and debates. So, for next semester, I would create teams of two to debate certain issues using the students' understanding of the materials and logical abilities as criteria for grading students. Professor Kole would act as moderator and fact checker. If students failed to read, failed to provide a logical argument, or failed to participate, it would reflect in their daily grades. As it stands now, students do not seem to be motivated to provide their thoughts and opinions, so it is difficult to assess their abilities. Merely having participation listed on the syllabus fails to motivate students to participate. |
| The readings were a bit long at times. |

16. Other comments:
|
| Sometimes when the class was silent it was assumed that we had not done the previous night's
reading. Most times, in my opinion, it was that some individuals did not know how to respond to
some of the questions being presented, or felt a little self conscious about how their response would
sound in a very intellectual class setting. |
| I think it'd be more beneficial to have students lead discussions. For example, a student doesn't necessarily have to do a presentation but they can be a discussion moderator that'll count towards their participation. |
| Good luck Professor Kole. |

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
|
| He is organized, understanding, fair, and genuinely concerned for the
students. |
| He has a good online presence |
| He is very clear with what he wants in class. |
| Well organized and very proficient in field that he is teaching. |
| He is very knowledgeable in the subject and he's very helpful. |
| He is very understanding in each of our situations. He does provide enough time for us to do the
work. Although, it is an online class, he does communicate with us very often/ at least twice a week
via e-mail or laulima. I like that he gives us reminders about our due dates. |
| Organized, and clear with instructions |
| The class is very well organized. He encourages free thinking and demands much student involvement. He creates a good atmosphere for discussion and gives very thoughtful feedback. He puts a great amount of effort into not just teaching material but also planting seeds to promote critical thinking amongst the class. |
| Very knowledgable. Well spoken. promotes active learning. |
| Professor Kole's major strengths as a teacher was the fact that he provided a fair share of workload, he was always consistent with replying back to emails, he is always willing to help us to learn and was concerned for us (in a good way of course). Professor Kole also is very patient and understanding as well as truly knowledgeable about this subject! :) |
| Subir made this class comfortable. It's as if we all became friends. It was a stimulating and pleasant experience. Notice I refer to him as Subir. We pretty much all did. He makes his students feel like their opinion is important and valuable.I think his major strength is that he is always communicating with his students. I dont know where he finds the time but he does it. |
| He is very considerate of he students. Understanding and knowledgable about his material. |
| Although this was an online class taken, i found it to be interesting and informative. Professor Kole has maintained a professional and enriching learning environment. |
| Subir knows and understands the subject well. He posts topic discussions that are relevant to what is going on in the world now, and goes even further to relate them to events happening in our own backyard.
Even though it's an online course, he encourages us to be involved with one another by allowing to have discussions on topics and even allow us to create our own topics. |
| Very good teacher, he knew the subject well and was very motivated to teach. |
| Very flexible and very organized. |
| I do know that he cares about you. It is not just pretending, but genuine. I felt that he really wants us to learn more about contemporary issues around the world, and us, personally. I do appreciate that. |
| Communication with students |
|
|
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
|
| None |
| The assessment methods did not match well with the student learning outcomes. I feel that I could
go through this whole course and not learn anything. The assessments were tricky and specific,
rather than promoting a general understanding or even emphasizing on key points. From this, I
would recommend completely reevaluating assessment. I can understand that Subir wants higher
scores and happier students, but I feel that he is sacrificing student success for that outcome. |

| for the resources folder to be more clear. I had a hard time looking for the readings as well as
videos sometimes. |
| I can't see anything that needs to change. I love the way this class is put together. |
| none |
| To be perfectly honest, I found Professor Kole's course to be just perfect the way it is. Because it is an online class, we basically had to learn on our own and the fact that Professor Kole made it less stressful and more easier on us than expected has truly helped me succeed in this course. There were discussion's to be posted every week, short quizzes which he provided the questions prior and of course a short writing essay. Everything was just perfect the way it is and I won't change it or make any suggestions of concerns in any way. |
| None, absolutely none. |
| There really isn't anything I can think of. |
| None, Professor Kole's structure of learning online was easy to navigate, and he was very prompt on both discussions and replies. |
| I wish I would take his class face to face |
| Nothing much because the course was straightforward with deadlines set. |
| Yes, I know the syllabus and course were flexible. Still, to us slackers (cough) it was a little hard to follow up the readings. Can you think of anything that can help us?
I DO think it was very flexible course though. If it's just me, please disregard this. |
|
|
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
|
| He is understanding and will make sure the needs of the students are met. |
| He uses his online presence to personalize discussions. |
| Professor showed that he care about his students by sending emails containing
deadlines. |
| For me, he was quick to answer all of my e-mails. I thought that was very important to me
especially this semester. |
| He would reply right away to our e-mails and responses. |
| Emails was responded frequently |
| He responds promptly and thoroughly. He provides constructive criticism, different perspectives, and a lot of encouragement. |
| responds in a timely manner, when there was a question or concern. |
| He shows concern for students in a good way of course! He is always on point in notifying us multiple times on whenever a discussion or short quiz is due. One example that justifies this is when some of us students weren't able to take a short quiz one day, he apologized and extended the short quiz for us. He is always asking if we have any questions and he is always consistent in replying with such a fast response! |
| Oh yes. If One of us were off-base in our understanding of the taught concepts, he gently pointed out the error in direction but complimented the person for his/her input and opinion. |
| He updated his students on anything and eveything. Any changes to the syllabus or course procedures he let them know immediately. He also gave feedback on students assignments good and bad depending on the students submission. |
| Professor Kole, encouraged us to think outside of the box and generate our own topics for debate or discussions. |
| He cared for every one, he gave good feedbacks for every assignment he asked
us to do |
| Felxible when I didn't have internet access and allowed me to take my quiz after I came back fro my trip. Really wanted me to take the quiz that I had missed. |
| He listened, and replies with willingness. He always remind us the quizzes due. |
| Posting reminders and quiz questions were helpful |
|
|
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
|
| Yes |
| Yes, Professor Kole is a great instructor who gets involved with his class
and encourages participation and growth. |
| I would recommend self motivated students and non-majors. I do not think the content of the
course is rigorous enough for someone seeking a poly sci path. |
| Yes I would. It was a fun class and it was very well organized |
| Yes, because not only is this class challenging but there is a lot to learn. |
| Yes, because this class is very convenient as well as very informative. Subir Kole is a great professor
who communicates very well. He also shows a lot of care for his students and you can tell by his e-
mails. |
| Absolutely. His class is challenging but enjoyable. I've learned a lot this semester. |
| yes. His way of teaching in fun and inspiring |
| Of course! I believe Professor Kole is a wonderful professor. I wish it would have been a classroom, because Professor Kole is truly patient and very kind to his students. He is always concerned and is willing to help us in any way possible. His workload for the course itself was just perfect for an online course. I would most definitely recommend Prof. Kole to other students! I too would take another course of his in the future. |
| Absolutely. The reason is because they couldn't find a better Political Science instructor. "Nuff" said. |
| Yes, his course is outlined from the start and is very straight forward about what he is looking for in the student and for the class. This class of his was very easy to follow and understand. This has made my semester easier to cope with. |
| Yes. Very informative on political issues, and you see another person outside of the U.S point of view on various political subjects. |
| Yes, he makes what may be a not so interesting subject, into one that you will be involved in for the rest of your life! |
| Yes, very good and honest teacher |
| Yes because hes well organized and sets deadlines for everything thats due at the beginning of the semester. Quizzes are also open book with more than enough time to finish it. |
| Absolutely, yes. Why? Go and take the class. You'll know and you'll appreciate it. |
| Yes |
|
|
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
|
| He needs to understand that students happiness is not the ultimate goal in this course. Learning is.
If he so chooses, the "N" grade can be an option for students that struggle. Do a complete overhaul
of the assessment methods. They are trivial. |
| n/a |
| great professor! |
| Great teacher and fair |
| Professor Kole has provided me great ease and a wonderful experience in learning about Politics. I am not really knowledgeable when it comes to Politics, but because Prof. Kole has made the course fair for everyone, everything else fell perfectly into place. There were Short Quizzes that we were able to study ahead of time and of course no time limit. The discussions and readings where a great tool to learning many of our readings for each week and to hear other debates, perspectives and ideas from the other students. Not to mention, all of the readings and articles that we read throughout class was highly interesting! I have learned a lot while taking this course and I will highly recommend to others what a great teacher and course this was. |
| I cannot compliment him enough. I felt like I was sitting in his living room, sipping on a cup of coffee and discussing politics. How does he manage that with an online class? Ask him because I have no idea. |
| He is a great guy and will help andbody with his class. He will help improve any students knowledge after taking his course. |
| I have never met professor Kole in person, but i would assume he is an interesting fellow with a mulititude of knowledge. |
| He is a good professor. |

| Thanks for this semester. I really enjoyed this course and my point of view is broden so much. This course makes me want to go even further. I am thinking of minor at POLS. It was such an interesting course and you cared us so much. Thank you again. Have a good summer.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
|
| I think he was very flexible with his availability. |
| He keeps the class updated with all the materials we need to do our homework. |
| Professor Subir Kole was willing to meet with those who needed help. He was
very considerate of the fact that this was an online class, and gave every
student the opportunity to thrive in an online environment. |
| He managed to make a mystifying subject interesting and understandable |
| I liked how you were open to ideas of us the students, as this was an online class and incorporated new things during the semester so that it would help us better ourselves. |
| His constant awareness of students strengths and weaknesses, knowledge of political going-ons,
and thorough use of the Laulima server as well as the internet. |
| He was very flexible. |
| Was very understanding to the needs of his students. |
| He really listens to what students are saying and tries as much as possible to make things work. |
| Flexible |
| helpful and is always there when he was needed. |
| Has great interaction with students in the course. He takes there opinions seriously and integrate
these ideas into the course. |
| Subir took our comments and feedback well and was never afraid to change the syllabus to
accommodate his students. Although I have never met this teacher in person I feel like he was one
of the best teachers i've had so far in the UH system. |
| He seems like a very careing and concerend teacher. |
| Subir Kole took a very active part in this online course. Online teachers i had before just told us what was needed to be done and expected us to do it. Subir Kole took the time to make sure we understood as a class what was expected of us. |
| He is very flexible and at the same time challenging. |
|
|
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
|
| There are a lot of reading assignments, but hardly any discussion. I think there should be fewer and longer discussions so that topics can really be discussed and debated. It's not easy to do a political science class when discussions are constantly moving forward without enough depth. It would also be great if Subir Kole could be involved in the discussions more. |
| -- snipped -- |
| No group paper |
| Probably the timing set. We had a chat scheduled every Tuesday at 7p.m. I tutor kids until 9p.m.
Monday through Friday. It made it a little difficult for me to make the chat sessions. |
| To have discussion boards be a little more clear. |
| Change the way we "meet" in the discussion boards. Maybe instead of having readings every other day, have us read and answer questions once a week. This way this allows all the students to try to catch up if they missed a day of reading because of work or another class. |
| I think the group project did not work. I think it would be better, for an online class at least, to just do your own paper. |
| -- snipped -- |
| -- snipped -- |
| Just that group projects don't usually tend to increase participation it just makes more work for those who actually do it. |
| None. Love the class as is. |
| A little more organization and clarity of what's expected of you in the course would be good. |

|
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
|
| He constantly reminded the students to do their work and gave opportunities to make up missed assignments. |
| He sent e-mails reminding us of our homework due dates and responded to e-mails in a timely fashion. |
| Allowed for scheduled appointments, accepted calls, and was very attentive
towards emails. |
| He kept in regular contact with us via e-mail and chats, and would respond immediately to any questions or concerns. |
| Always sent out emails about different assignments that were due and different reading and stuff. |
| His persistant emails and constant eyes on students that didn't seem to show any interest in the
class yet remained in it. |
| He always emailed us a lot, and had camp fire chats open at least once a week, and we can openly
ask questions about the course. |
| Was willing to change his syllabus to help his students in any way he could. |
| At first the class seemed a little "unorganized" but professor kole explained that it is not that he was unorganized, but that he was open to change. there were major changes in the syllabus well into the semester, but it was only out of the concern of participation of the class. I admit, I thought these changes were unfair and unreasonable, but in the end I realize that it was in the best interest in us, most of the time. |
| He asked for our feedback all the time, even changing the syllabus when we thought things weren't working very well. He was very accommodating. |
| Many opportunities to do work. |
| he would try to change up the course in a way where all students were benefiting from it. |
| He would always post more than one update on upcoming assignments and always returned replies. |
| He always returned my emails promptly and whenever a student was dissatisfied with a section in
the course he was always open for suggestions |
| He kept sending e-mails daily to inform students on what needs to be done. |
| Subir Kole set up a campfire chatroom every tuesday so that students with questions could ask freely. however it would have been great if their was more like it being that i had a prior committment on tuesday's. also subir kole made it clear that we could email kole at anytime with concerns/questions. |
| He was constantly seeking to know our opinion on things and that was cool. |
|
|
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
|
| Yes, he's a very good instructor that will always help you if you are struggling. |
| I would recommend Subir Kole for students who like to learn their material independently, without a teacher constantly telling us their political views. |
| Yes, he is willing to work with students to better understand the subject
content at hand. |
| Yes, he was an interesting instructor |
| Yes, his attention to detail and his understanding of students needs and wants of his curriculum,
every student should have a teacher that is this organized and appreciative attitude about his class
makes students feel at ease to know they have a teacher who actually teaches. |
| yes, because it was a fun class. |
| Yes, although he could change up his tactics, he is willing to change things no other teacher would, in the middle of the semester no less. |
| I would mostly recommend him. The class felt a little disorganized at times, because we weren't sticking to the syllabus, but other than that, it was a good class. |
| Yes, class is still new and being molded. |
| yes, very considerate and easy to talk with. |
| Yes, very caring teacher who cares about students learning |
| Yes I would highly recommend Subir to other students. You learn a lot in this class while not feeling
too stressed out about the course. It goes at a very good pace for an online class. |
| Yes because he is a very careing easy teacher. |
| i would recommend subir kole because kole takes the time to really structure the course so it is reasonable and understandable without compromising what is needed to be learned. |
| Yes, I believe that though it was rocky at first, he is a solid teacher with a cool class. |
|
|
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
|
| Subir Kole never inserted his own political standing, which allowed students to offer their opinions more freely. This is a very valuable attribute in a political science class, in which it is easy for teachers to teach based on personal bias. I felt that Subir Kole maintained a good level of objectivity to the students' learning. |
| Professor Subir Kole, has the understanding of a Great Leader! |
| He was always just an email away and was very attentive to it. Responses would be as quick as 15
minutes later. |
| He was very chill. |
