13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She knows the course material.
she created a good atmosphere for the class at first. the begining of the semester it was very fun and easy to learn because the whole class knew each other and got along.
Very much interested in seeing students succeed. Passionate about teaching.
she's very good at signing, and gets everyone involved.
Knows the subject matter very well and is more than willing to take the time to help the students. Very nice and helpful. I did not feel intimidated learning a completely foreign language.
She cared about her students and wanted everyone to succeed.
she knows the subject well.
Linda's major strengths that she's a good ASL teacher and she helps her students to understand.
She is really nice and helpful when you need help.
Linda's first language is ASL. This is her strength for all she is. ASL is an expressive language and Linda is a great teacher teaching what she knows best.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Reply to your emails. The syllabus was not correct and neither was the timeline so it was difficult to tell what was expected of me.
i think you should allow some talking in class. sometimes its hard to ask a question to the person sitting next to you by writing it down because by the time you get the question answered, you missed about a minute of lecture and your kinda behind. sometimes i would try to pay attention but the signing was so fast i would not understand what she said.
Assignment list in syllabus with all the due dates. Sometimes was a little difficult to know when something was due.
Please be a little more clear about when assignments are due. I would have liked to have more time to practice signing in class. I felt like my receptive skills improved but expressively, I don't feel much better. Please be more strict about people talking during class; it's really distracting to try to turn "English off" when there are people who won't be quiet.
To be more routined with the homework. Make it known from the begining of the semester so everyone can turn it in on time without excuse.
A more detailed and organized method of explaining signs. I sometimes got lost trying to comprehend everything.
Maybe an assignment sheet that gives students details of the assignments so they know when things are do and requirements
better organization of assignments.
To make her sentences clear. Also when she's giving her tests don't mess up her sentences. For an example say one thing and change it up the next time.
Sometimes I got lost when finger spelling I couldn't always keep up so sometime I wouldn't know what is going on.
i wouldn't change anything
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She allowed things to be turned in late, I believe, because of the communication barrier. Some things were not clear to me.
she let everyone make up work, and she did take the time to email back.
Invited students to come and see her on off days if help was needed
she helps you out if you had a hard time on tests.
She would always invite us to deaf events. Knew the class was long and she would allow us a 10 minute break for water or restroom. She was always helpful to the students and would go out of her way to allow students to complete assignments and tests.
she would encourage and help the students do better when they weren't sure what signs were what
When her students get a bad grade on their test she helps them to know what that sign was. Also she let's us retake it if we need too.
She would tell us to ask her if we needed help. We could stay after class to get help from her. She would send videos and give us a lot of chance to do stuff.
she was there when we needed her and when we didn't. she would always help those who needed help and extra help. she took the time out of her schedule to be there for her students. i really appreciate that. as a person, Linda is one of the kindest i have met.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
She is good to learn from in class, but difficult to reach for clarification on homework assignments.
yes i would. i think shes a very nice teacher.
yes
Yes, she's easy to understand when she signs. she makes sure you know what she means.
Yes. She is fair and nice. I learned a lot from her class and would love to take her class for ASL 201, but she is not teaching that class. She treats people fairly and truly does want everyone to succeed.
yes because she teaches you a lot about sign language that you wouldn't know
yes shes a nice person will work with most of her students if they show effort.
I would recommend Linda for ASL 101 not so much 102. ASL 102 is a bit challenging with Linda because of what I said in question 14
Yes because it's fun and interesting. It is really good if you keep up with showing up to class.
i would recommend Linda to other students only if the are serious about learning ASL. if not, then there is no need to waste her time.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
thank you for being a good teacher.
Thank you for putting up with me for 2 semesters. I will miss your class. I have learned a lot about the Deaf community. Thank you.
she's a good teacher i like her class :)
Over all Linda is a good ASL teacher. She is really good about helping her students learn and understand sign language. She also understands that it's hard for a hearing person to learn sign language. Or to understand the deaf community.
Thank you for everything I hope I can some how keep up with signing so I don't forget anything and can learn more.
Linda is a kind teacher. she teaches with compassion and you can see that she enjoys what she does. i feel greatful to have had her these past two semesters and i look forward to learning from her in the future.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
she is very patient and explains very well.
she understood how hard it is for hearing students to learn sign language.
She is very patient and kind and a tough cookie at the same time.
Funny - tries to get the student to think.
She is both encouraging and patient. She is also a very entertaining storyteller as well as teacher which makes the learning more fun, accessible, and gives us perfect example of the language's applicability in life. i am enjoying her class and look forward to more with her.
Knowledge. Fairness. Provides an entertaining atmosphere for learning.
The major strenghts for Linda as a teacher is that she's helpful and she doesn't get frustrated or mad when we don't know something or we forget. Also she is willing to help hearing people learn sign language.
She shows that she enjoys teaching and helping others as she teaches what she knows best and loves.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
to make the assignments more clear, and to inform us about outside class activities that are rerquired for the course earlier so that it is easier to plan out a scedule so that we can go to the events.
Maybe encourage students to meet outside of class a little more to meet with the deaf community.
Maybe more role playing games
I think the changes that I would suggest to Linda is to have more time on the Biweekly Journals.
no changes.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
n/a
She noticed when students didnt show up and encouraged students having a hard time to keep trying. She also encourages her students when they do well.
Linda was always reassuring when material seemed overwhelming. She is patient. She is also fun while at the same time being strict enough so that we learn at a good pace.
Very prompt with assignment scores. Was available for help outside of class
If the students had a bad grade on their test or quiz they would talk to them and tell them to retake it. She is willing to help you get better at your signing if you just ask her. Also she tells us that if we ever need help we could always email her, or go to her office.
office open when we needed her. she would take extra time with students one on one if anyone was falling behind. she really wanted everyone to understand the course and take it out where ever we may go.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes, because she is a very good teacher to learn signlanguage from. knows how to keep the class interacted and interested.
She cares about your grade.
Yes she is a wonderful story teller once you learn ASL you can understand her.
Yes
Yes, i would recommend Linda to other students. I was surprised when I realized during the first class that there are no interpreters even initially. By the end of the first day, i went home knowing how to communicate a few things and understood that ASL is indeed an independent language.
Yes. I feel that she is a very good ASL instructor
Yes I would because she's a great teacher and she is funny too. Also you learn everything in the time period and you actually get your moneys worth when you take this class.
i would definitely recommend her to other students. it is a great way to learn a language if the teacher her self teaches only using that specific language.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
she is a very fun teacher, even though she cannot hear and does not speak i was able to understand her when she teaches, and i loved the stories and jokes she told through sign language.
She is a smart interesting person and I hope great things continue to happen for her.
Linda is an invaluable asset to the Deaf and hearing community.
I enjoyed this class very much.
I like how she makes the class fun instead of just learning everything and not do anything after.
i hope many students take her course and will use the knowledge that they learn to spread awareness. I also hope she continues on doing what she is doing and influencing young students.

Why is ASL not offered at UH Manoa? That seems to condone the discrimination Deaf people experience.
glad i took her course.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Makes sure that everyone understands. She has a lot of humor, which makes the class fun and never boring. She knows how to teach efficiently and improves the students expectations of themselves.
Linda Lambrecht gets everyone involved.
Obviously she knows the subject matter well. Although she can't really speak to us, I find that she's able to clearly communicate with her students.
Linda knows her subject well and is passinate about it, she created an stimulating environment for me and other students to learn in that was positive, fun, and while mistakes where made at times by myself she always kindly corrected, never did I feel like she was critizing me, I know that she took the time to correct me because she cared about me truly learning. She would always correct me with a smile and encouragement.
She is very knowledgeable of the subject area and helpful.
She was entertaining. Although some may say she was going fast in class, I felt that her speed was fine with signing, in actuality I was able to learn more. She was humorous as well as informative, it made class really enjoyable.
Knowing the subject material.
She is amazing at ASL, she teaches in a fun and engaging way. She encourages plenty of class participation.
she's a very funny, caring teacher. she helps students and is very approachable. she's a great teacher and she's patient.
She has a good teaching style and a rememberable way of showing us things.
Really nice and smart lady. Funny with a sense of humor.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Just don't forget anything!
none.
I think that the students who cannot keep up with the pace of the class should be responsible for catching up during her office hours or seeking out help on their own. I know it is in Linda's caring nature to slow the class down for them, but it can get boring and repetitive for the students who take the initiative and study/use other resources to keep up in class.
Some of the assignments were not clear.
I felt everything was good.
more writing on the board to help those who are having trouble.
It was difficult to keep track of when assignments were due and some of the assignments were confusing. It would be great if there was a little more order to that. Also some assignments went missing and tests were sometimes graded wrong, added up differently.
i know there's a lot of material to go over throughout the course, but if she could slow down a little bit because it's hard to catch every thing in the correct way it's being presented.
Just that the syllabus was a little more clear and laid out
Be more clear when explaining homework assignments.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
she would meet with us after class, to help or explain confusing material. She would make sure, we're all doing our homework and keep a watchful eye. no question was ignored, she always answered and made sure that as a whole, we were learning.
She asks people why they're late and wonders where people are if they're not in class. She helps after class if anyone has any questions.
She shows great concern for her students by adjusting the pace of the class to suit the slower students. I also found that she is also easily accessible through e-mail communication and even gives us a contact number to use in urgent situations. (To text her) One of the easiest teachers to get in touch with.
When Linda would ask us how we are doing, she geniunely means it,she not only cares about the welfare of students in the classroom she also shosw concerned for it outside of it. She took the time to review everyones work and show us one on one and as a class on how to improve. She continuely would ask if my classmates or I understood or had any questions before moving on and did not mind review if there was a concern.
She was easily understanding. For example, if you just take the time to see her after class or just e-mail her that you're having problems or why you've missed class, she would be very understanding and usually allotting. She even would ask if we needed extra time to have help reviewing, saying she would come to review with us an hour before class starts, on her own time, it was very nice of her to do this.
talked to them about missing assignments, asked where people were when they did not show up for class.
She was willing to do make up tests or assignments. She would sit with you after class and offer assistance with signing.
she was always available to help and she always repeated things when we didn't catch what she was signing. she was very understanding and overall was a great teacher.
When i was in the ER and my aunty emailed her (with her number) she had an interpreter call to let her know it was fine i was missing the exam and could take it later. She is also very quick to reply to emails.
She would ask us if we understood.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes! this is my second ASL teacher, and so far my favorite. I enjoy her teaching methods and she does activities that are fun in class. She makes things easier to understand, but quick so we have to keep up. I would recommend her to any person interested in ASL.
Yes because she teaches ASL very well.
I would only recommend Linda to students who have a true desire to learn ASL and about deaf culture. If they just want to get foreign language credits, this class is not for them. This is a great experience since we are immersed into the culture, especially when attending the Deaf Starbucks Events.
Yes, she is an excellent teacher and know how to make her subject interesting, fun, and engaging for her students.
Yes.
yes, she is a difficult grader but very effective.
Yes! Her class is so much fun and you learn so much. She is really engaged.
yes i would. she is very pleasant and nice and she's a great teacher. it's great learning from her because you kinda get to see things from a different perspective. she's very fair and helps students see the connection between the sign.
YES ! she is a great teacher for the reasons above
Yes. Good teacher. Really makes us thinks for ourselves because she signs fast, so you are forced to catch on.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
I hope I can have her as my teacher for 201 & 202!
n/a
Great class. I wish I could continue next fall, but it doesn't fit in my schedule. Because of her guidance and her instruction, I really would like to come back and complete the two years of sign language.
She is extremely fun teacher to have and did an excellent job at creating a positive, warm, and fun environment to learn in. Thank you!
She is a great educator !
Thank you!
18. Other comments:
never stop teaching!

I find that many of the other students underestimate Linda's capabilities since she is deaf. Although she isn't able to hear students talking or discussing answers, she is fully aware of what is going on in her classroom and doesn't hesitate to call students on their misbehavior.

Linda' major strengths is her great personality, ability to work with signers on many different levels, and patience.
she knows the subject well and pushes students
was a subject matter expert. she was deaf.
fun, smart and just awesome
-she is an expert at ASL -she is very understanding when we need to be excused from class early/late/etc -she offers us different ways to do our homework and final exam (like using the video, laulima, etc) -she encourages us to sign in front of the class on a daily basis
She tries to help students.
She is a fun and expressive person who keeps you engaged. She really tries to help each student at their level and challenges them to improve through fostering a nurturing learning environment.
She makes the class fun with games to encourage the use of ASL; She takes the time to help each student understand better, in other words, she is patient. She is passionate about her culture and language and is willing to teach and share it with students who are interested to learn her language.
She has great ASL expression and she shows ethusiasm for class. She also cares about the students learning and is willing to work with us to improve our grade. I liked how she would make us do activities in class. It made us so we had to think on our feet. It was hard but I think it is a benefit.
She truly cares about the success of her students.
Her Sense of Humor as she teaches ASL!!!! She always takes the time too help and has the keen ability on recognizing which students need help and she does such a wonderful job of helping everyone....
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
-
If I could offer Linda suggests. I would ask that she be more organized and not so sporadic when giving assignments. In addition, I felt when grading homework she would ask an open ended question and grade on whether she like the answer. I would have like to see her grade on participation and assignment completion, rather than personal opinion.
her communication of assignments and what is expected was not good this semester
more organization. and if there are students who are just taking the class to take it, please warn other students of that. It was unfair when students work hard and find out the person next to them isnt doing it for a grade.

-be more strict with the students who speak in class. they were very disruptive and annoying. -inform students of more deaf events -remind class when journals are due on Laulima or have it on the syllabus stating "Laulima Journal Due"
Don't show favoritism and be fair to ALL students.
Maybe to be more stricter on those who has the tendency to speak in class, which is a sign of rudeness especially in front of a Deaf person. Have some ground rules as for turning off cell phones that ring in the middle of class time. Other than that no changes are needed as regards her teaching.
I know Linda was busy this semester and we got a little behind in our syllabus. So it got a little cramped toward the end.
Nothing... I wish that everyone could take a class from her.
:)
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Lots of emails.
Linda showed concern by offering flexible office hours and encouraged the class to work together.
she offers help outside of class for those who need or want it
Halfway through the semester she reminded students not to talk in class, which was very distracting and disruptive for other students.
always willing to help in or out of the classroom, very understanding.
-she would always understand if we were late for class or had to leave early for other things. i really appreciated that. -she would answer emails promptly -she would tell students who spoke in class to stop..but didn't work most of the time. i don't know why they love to talk in ASL class.
She made herself available outside of class hours to catch up on assignments.
She allows students to first try things for themselves and then steps in to affirm them of their work and offer constructive criticism to help them learn. Each student is at their own level, and she makes clear accommodations for each.
She is very accommodating and understands the concerns of students and their situations.
She would ask for feedback on different assignments and ask us how we felt we did. she would also give us opertunities to redo sections of our exams to get a better grade.
She found one on one time to help me succeed
She Leads with her Heart...xo
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes. She has high expectations for her students. She's fun and has lots of interesting assignments.
Yes, I feel she is a great instructor and fantastic signer.
yes. at least for 101-201
absolutely I would recommend Linda to other students. In fact, I already have. She is fun to learn from, knows a lot and is always helpful.
YES, she's the best.
Yes! of course! i would recommend Linda's class to everyone! She is a great teacher who is kind, understanding and funny. She presents the material in a fun way for us to learn. For example, we had to teach the class how to make a certain dish and that was a great way to learn the signs for different types of food and the measurements. Her class isn't too demanding too.
Yes, but if you are not her top student she may shaft you a bit to the side.
Absolutely. Her style of signing taught me more than just vocabulary and helped me to learn the more fluid and natural style of communicating in sentences. Also, I really like how she breaks each lesson down, takes the extra time to help us study and understand the concepts before each quiz, gives each student individual attention and works with them on their particular needs. I learn so much more just by sitting in class and having her communicate with us than I could ever learn from a textbook.
Yes, even though she is strict, she is strict in a good way because she wants everyone to learn and grasp the understanding of Deaf culture and ASL.
Yes, She is tough and strict but she will work with you. I have improved greatly in ASL this semester.
Definetly... because she cares more about you than her self
Are U kidding???? :)
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
She rocks!
Thank you for making a fun and healthy atmosphere.
she is a kind woman
thank you for a wonderful semester.
She makes you go out of your way to do things when class time is over.
She rocks as a professor! One of KCC's best. If I could, I'd want to take classes from her again and again.
You are a very excellent teacher. Please keep teaching ASL and hope to see you sometimes at Starbucks.
I have really enjoyed our class. she has made it challenging and fun at the same time. She is very aproachable.
She is Wonderful!
I'm going too Miss You! & I hope to keep going to 2nd friday of Month to see my ASL friends!! Much sincere Aloha e to you & Brudah Jeff. kyle

16. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She knew the subject matter very well. She made class interesting and fun
Linda is a very engaging teacher. She is funny, smiles and laughs a lot which makes the class a very enjoyable learning atmosphere. She is very patient and will repeat herself until a student understands. I felt like I learned a lot from Linda and always looked forward to class. Even when topics were challenging to understand she really encouraged us to keep with it, o keep practicing and not get discouraged.
She has a sense of humor, explains concepts well, knows the subject well, and always asks if we have questions about tests and assignments beforehand.
Her PATIENCE with students who fail to pay attention to her on the television!!!! Her incredible sense of humor! Her positive encouragement and persistence to not let students simply give up. Her fantastic videos that she sends us to practice and prepare for quizes and exams. She takes time to answer all my emails in a timely manner and give constructive criticisms for improvment which encourages me to think as far out of the box as I can. She likes students to get uncomfortable and to push beyond their capablities so that we can keep improving. Her ability to teach students to do signing as if telling a story. Not just signing sentences as "Hearings" think. Once I understood this concept, it became clearer and more enjoyable to learn ASL. I am so thankful to have had Linda for ASL 102 and 201. I will miss her fantastic, "old school" style of teaching, but I will miss her sense of humor most of all. When all else seemed to be falling apart, a joke and a smile from Linda put me right back on track and ready to keep plugging ahead. "Experience as much of life as you can," I can hear her signing! "One day, your signing skills will all fall into place."
encouraged participation
American Sign Language
She is very knowledgeable and followed the structure of the workbook required for the class. She was also patient with us and helped everyone as best she could.

18. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Signing new signs more slowly and making sure we knew what she was signing
Maybe encourage students who tended to take up A LOT of class time asking questions all the time to seek help from a tutor. That was the only thing I found frustrating, some students monopolizing the class the class time.
I think we need more hands-on signing practice. As far as I am able to recall, we only formally practiced signing 5-6 times. 3X practice in pairs; 2X tell our nationalities and family tree; and, 1X famous Deaf presentations. The rest of the time, the only times the students signed was to ask questions, or to ask the instructor to repeat. In an effective language learning environment, one main objective should be for the instructor to keep the "teacher talk" down to a minimum. This means that the instructor does less of the talking, and the students do most of the talking. In this class, the instructor does most of the signing. Most of the time was spent watching. My receptive skills improved greatly; however, my expressive skills improved minimally. Also I'm not so sure that CELT is the best approach to language instruction. It was often difficult to see the other students, and watching the other students sign is one of the class objectives. It also created extra "down" time to maneuver and change screens.
I would like to let Linda know that it is okay to put the students who don't pay attention to the television, "on the spot". Ask them question after question so that they must pay attention! Ask all of us questions and force us to sign more!
went through material fast
suggest to teach us the speed of fingerspelling or signing.

19. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She encouraged us to try even if we may not have understood everything. She replied to our e-mails
Very patient.
She gave us encouragement. She told us to keep trying, and not to give up. She encouraged us to call and/or email if we didn't understand.
Exibited a tremendous amount of PATIENCE with students who don't PAY ATTENTION to the television monitor when she is teaching!!!
always responded to e mail
To make sure all students understand what she said in signing.
if we had a question, she would answer promptly. Or if one of us wasn't there, she's make sure we knew what went on in class.
20. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would recommend her if the student started from the beginning so that the student would know her style of teaching. If a student the ASL from another teacher, it wuold take awhile to get used to her way of teaching.
Definitely, she makes class a fun place to go and you learn a lot.
Although we had some very productive days--lots of instruction, lots of learning, lots of vocabulary, grammar, videos, homework, and going over the homework in class, I could not recommend with a clear conscience due to the following reason: There were days whereas we had no instruction, no learning, no nothing. During these days, the instructor was looking for a lost email she had sent us, and asking the students if they had received it, she was working on her computer, sometimes trying to fix something, talking or conversing with the students in the other class, answering questions from the students in the other class. Some days I'm not sure exactly what was happening, but it was not instruction. While these things were happening, the students were talking story in English, or staring at the instructor waiting for class to begin. Sometimes we would do nothing for the first hour and ten minutes, then have a quick fifteen-minute lesson, and go home. On these days I was completely aggravated. In the very beginning, we got off to a slow start, but then one day we picked up. We were going full speed ahead. Towards the end of the semester during the last couple of weeks, we began to slow down. I feel that I need to get this off of my chest, so I can leave it behind me, and start the next semester with a clean slate. I don't know what to expect next semester. I'm hoping we will have class everyday that we are present; otherwise, it will be aggravating and a waste of. Sometimes it seems that the instructors are simply bored.
YES. I like her style of teaching ASL. Specifically her skills in teaching that ASL is like telling a story. This was a critical concept for me ... when I understood this? ... my mind did a 180 degree turn and signing became fun, interesting, and easier to learn.
yes but is tough class
She is a good teacher, able to teach the rule of ASL.
Yes. I learned a good amount from this instructor. Although it took me a while to get used to her signing.
21. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
When I first took her class, coming from learning ASL 101 from another teacher it was really hard getting used to her style of teaching, but I found after awhile it got easier and very enjoyable.
She's great :)
Please, if possible, have her return to teach the distance learning classes!!!!!
